Summary
Modern cultivator, Wei Wuxian, dies in a train crash and is sent back in time to the period of Ancient China he had been writing his thesis on - transmigrated into his own body as a child, dying on the streets of Yiling. He has no money, no family, but a knowledge of modern cultivation and of the historical events that are about to unfold.
He recalls the recently-unearthed journal of a woman who was imprisoned in Cloud Recesses against her will, and decides that she’s a good place to start to find someone who might be willing to help him dismantle the corruption that had sent the Cultivation World into the Dark Ages so long ago.
Of course, he had no idea that the person he sought would be the mother of Hanguang-Jun, the object of Wei Wuxian's fascination (“obsession,” his friend had corrected), since he had first learned of his existence in the ancient texts he'd studied.

Once Shizui is old enough to leave the Cloud Recesses more often, Lan Wangji, who has become stoic and cold after his decade of first seclusion and then later mourning, is brought a young boy to care for and take his mind off things by his brother.
“You told me once that you wanted to bring somebody back to the Cloud Recesses to hide them away, and he is somebody who could use the same thing,” Xichen says in explanation.
He does not say that he is sorry for how things turned out. Does not acknowledge that he’d been wrong, he and the Lan Sect Elders and in fact the entire Jianghu. He just brings Lan Wangji a boy and expects him to take him in because it’s the right thing to do.
OR: Lan Xichen brings Mo Xuanyu to the Cloud Recesses, hoping he will make a good companion for his exiled brother. There's only two things that could get in the way, the fact that a Lan only ever loved once and that Nie Huaisang is busy plotting in the background.

Lan Wangji is tasked with kidnapping Jin Zixuan's fiancée, Jiang Yanli. As the Jiang family are famously insular and protective of their only daughter, Lan Wangji has merely a picture of her brother, Jiang Wanyin, to help identify her. So, when he sees a long-haired girl dressed in red robes hanging off Jiang Cheng's shoulder, of course he assumes it is Yanli. But... she is so beautiful, how could Lan Wangji just give her away to his own family as ransom, just like that? And it certainly seems that 'Yanli' is willing to use any tool at her disposal in order to convince him otherwise...
