The first time he saw her, he’d been in a rush and the sight of her sitting in an armchair by the window had slowed him further.
Not that he cared. He was too captivated by her to care.
This was his favourite coffee shop. It was equal distance from his home and the firehouse, and they did the best coffee and hot cocoa in the city. But in the few years that he’d been coming here, he’d never seen her before – and she was the kind of person you noticed.
She had a book on her lap and a mug in her hand and those two simple things somehow made her exude serenity. She looked like she could happily and peacefully sit in that spot for hours and feel no urgency to move. Unlike him. He always felt like he had fires to put out – figuratively and literally.

Six calls and it was barely noon.
Sylvie didn’t need this today.
As much as she loved her job, there were days when she just wanted to go home and curl up on the couch with something sweet and HGTV. Today was one of those days, and of course it would be a day that she and Violet were run off their feet. In a way, the distraction of work had been good, but not enough for her to be grateful for it. Not when she couldn’t still her thoughts no matter how hard she tried.
It had been this way for a few months now. She had a lot to think about, a lot to work on, a lot to consider – and it was the anticipation that came with it all that was causing her the most chaos in the life she had spent three years getting comfortable with.

Sylvie eventually yawned and Matt noticed her eyes slowly falling asleep. He hoisted her legs up off of the couch, being mindful of her pregnancy, and carried her to their ensuite bedroom bridal style.
“Let’s go, mermaid.”
Sylvie immediately looked at her husband, confused at what he was trying to say. “Huh?”
“Mermaids? Your brother’s code name for roommates? It catches on after a while.” She chuckled at Matt’s antics. He can be a real dork when he wants to be. Truthfully, that side of him is the side she loves to see the most. “And just so you know, I’ll gladly be your mermaid any day.”
