Summary
James Fitzjames, hero of the British Navy, has taken up residence in a lonely family hall on Dartmoor. His steward John Bridgens is with him, though the pair cannot help but feel they may be under threat. And there is definitely something prowling around the Hall.
Captain Francis Crozier, one of the survivors of the doomed Terror voyage, is none to pleased with his new neighbor. Fitzjames is a towering reminder of all he failed to do and why he's exiled to the country with only a few former sailors for company.

Panic flickers up his spine before Stiles can stop it. He forces his voice to stay light, easy. “It’s probably just my soul trying to escape my body,” he says. “Can’t blame it, really.”
But inside, he’s scrolling through mental footage of every night he’s ever crashed here, cataloguing every murky, half-remembered dream, wondering what words might have slipped out when his guard was down. Did he say Derek’s name? Did he say I love you? Did he say don’t leave? Did he confess the whole pathetic thesis statement his brain has been footnoting for months now: I know this isn’t actually anything for you, and that’s fine, I’m fine, please just let me keep pretending until you get bored?

"Really?" Arthur asked, brushing the dirt off of him as he glowered at the man. "Again? I had it under control - and we aren't allies!" He added heatedly. Balinor shrugged, looking nonplussed by Arthur's anger as he stroked the dragon's wing.
"I know." Balinor said simply. "But I promised my son I wouldn't let you die."
"Your...You have a son?" Arthur demanded. Again, Balinor shrugged. "Why does your son...? Nevermind. Don't save me again!" He snapped, pointing a finger at the man. He turned to stalk back to the horse only for a column of fire to blow past him. The prince jumped. He spun around to tell the man off again but immediately noticed one of the remaining bandits who had been slowly creeping towards him burnt to a crisp. He looked back at Balinor.
"Sorry."

Balinor lives. Arthur will do pretty much anything to get the man to stop saving his life.
