Hard AU/UA, to me, means that a significant aspect(s) of a story has been changed. Typically it will be the setting which changes the dynamic of how characters we know and love interact, usually expressed as a change in time period. So far, if it is a time period/major setting change and/or a movie remix, it goes here.
Everything inbetween, sadly, is a toss up between hard AU and soft... I try to stay consistent tho...
