The unpredictable Belgian weather had decided to swing towards the traditional for an afternoon in early May by being sunny and warm - but not too warm. All the Broerrrs had finished their classes for the day and opted to hang out at Park Spoor Noord for a change of scenery. Well that’s what Robbe had told his friends when suggesting the location, which was partly true, but the other part being that the park was a lot closer to Sander’s school than their usual Linkerover, and the two had arranged a date for when Sander finished his classes, which unusually for them went on longer than Robbe’s this particular day. This would be the first proper date they’d have since the winter lockdown. Even when restrictions began easing up earlier, due to exams and school work and anxious parents, neither boys had been able to free up an evening to spend out with the other. So needless to say, Robbe was in a good mood.
The boys had parked themselves and their bags on the edge of the skate park. It was thankfully not too busy today, or maybe not too busy yet, allowing them mostly free reign of the bowl which Robbe particularly appreciated. What with having a boyfriend, studying, applying for colleges and universities, and the lockdowns, he had to admit that he was a little out of practice so he was glad to just skate around with no pressure. As he skated back towards his friends, he noticed them in some sort of heated discussion, occasionally throwing a glance his way.
‘What’s up?’ he said after landing and tossing his board behind them. After a flurry of nudges, Jens was the one that finally spoke up.
‘Aaron wants to know what your type is,’
Robbe furrowed his brows.
‘What?’
‘Like in guys. What makes a type? Is it the hair? Or the height? Or-,’
‘Aaron, I have a boyfriend,’ Robbe laughed at his friend.
‘No I mean what kind of things do you pay attention to? Because for girls, we look at boobs or butt or hair or something. What is it for guys?'
Robbe smirked.
'I want a guy with big boobs,'
The other two sniggered.
'For real though. It's not a bad question right? Because I can't even imagine what's attractive about another guy,'
'And why do you want to know?'
'Just… I heard Amber talking about it with the girls and realised we don’t really talk about that kinda stuff anymore,' Aaron shrugged.
‘Maybe because 3 of us have partners?’ Robbe suggested.
‘But still… If we talked about it in the future, I wouldn’t want to leave you out of it all,'
'Do you want to make yourself hot to a boy?'
'No! I'm just wondering. Because we're all straight so we don't know what makes a guy hot or fuckable right?'
'Not this again,' Robbe sighed, remembering the conversation he’d been thrown into in which he had to rank his friends. Both Jens and Moyo laughed, also remembering the event.
'He has a point I guess,’ Moyo eventually and reluctantly agreed. ‘Like you probably know what makes girls attractive because we always talked about that but we don't know what makes boys attractive,'
Jens shrugged.
'But I mean it's all just personal preference right? And just because we're straight doesn't mean we can't find a guy hot or fuckable right?'
This turned the 3 other heads; a light eyebrow raise from Robbe and then looks of confusion from Moyo and Aaron.
'Right?'
'You find some guys fuckable?' Robbe asked.
He shrugged again.
'Yeah, there's some hot people on Instagram. I just don't think we should rule it out,'
More confused looks from Moyo and Aaron.
'Come on, being straight doesn't mean zero attraction to the same gender. Right?'
The two shook their heads.
'Honestly, I can appreciate a dude looking alright but the thought of being with him, for me, is just a massive turn off,' Moyo said. Aaron nodded in agreement.
Jens furrowed his brows.
‘There’s got to be some guy that you wouldn’t hate making out with though,’
They both shook their heads.
‘Not that I have anything against other people doing it obviously, but going down on another guy sounds disgusting,’ Moyo admitted. Aaron agreed in a similar vein.
‘Never say never but feels very unlikely,’
The trio finally faced Robbe, which in hindsight he should’ve seen that coming. He rolled his eyes, realising that he was the “know-all gay guru”, the Milan , of their group now.
‘I mean sexuality’s more like a spectrum so maybe you’re not as straight as you think you are?’ he offered. He didn’t want to hand his friend any labels, knowing that figuring it out was a very personal journey. But from Jens’ expression, it was clear that his words had hit a little harder than he expected.
‘It’s fine if you aren’t, by the way,’ Moyo quickly inputted. ‘Straight, I mean,’
A hum settled the group into somewhat of an awkward silence that was surprisingly broken by Aaron.
‘Either way, I think I’m going to give that slope another shot,’ he announced, reaching for his board. Moyo followed suit.
‘I’ll join you!’
The two boys skated off to the other side of the bowl, far out of earshot so Robbe nudged his friend.
‘Hm?’
‘If er… If you want to talk about it at all…’ he began and cocked his head to the side. ‘You know, I’m here and everything,’
Jens gave his friend a small smile.
‘Thanks,’
The following silence told him that maybe Jens needed some time to dwell on the whole not-being-straight thing.
‘Shall we join them?’
‘Sure.’
