Chapter Text
chapter one - dying
The world was ending and Isabelle knew she had a choice to make.
Her whole life she had wished for freedom, to be able to live her life the way she wanted to. Not having to do what her parents wanted her to. Or worse, be who her parents wanted her to be.
So, when she heard the chaperone call her name through the dust and chaos, the twelve-year-old ran the other way.
She was in no way a stupid kid (even if recent decisions might make people believe otherwise), Isabelle knew that eventually they would come looking for her. At least if the aliens hadn’t taken over the world before that could happen. And if that happened, she’d be too dead to worry about it anyway. But if the aliens (she thought they were aliens anyway) lost, she had to make sure that no one could find her once the dust settled.
Izzy ran towards the chaos. The aliens were flying over her head and she ducked into a store before they could spot her. Glass shards and debris covered the ground in the front of the store and the blonde had to be careful not to make too much noise or draw attention in any other way.
It was a clothing store and Izzy grabbed a black backpack and hurried to the teen section. Not looking at the size, she grabbed what she thought might be useful. A zip-up hoodie, jeans, t-shirts, socks and underwear and a pair of sneakers.
A loud rumbling reminded her to hurry up. She did not want to be inside of a building when it crashed. Or be stabbed or shot by an alien. No, thank you.
The moment she stepped back out on the street was the moment she knew she had made a mistake. The street was crawling with aliens. From here she could even see the portal in the sky. She assumed that was where they had come from. It was a huge hole that opened straight into space. If it wasn’t for the dangerous monsters lurking around, she would’ve stared at it for hours. But in this situation, Izzy only glanced at it and ducked behind a car.
They hadn’t seen her yet, but that could change any moment, so she had to be careful. She crept from car to car, as fast as she could without being seen.
Izzy knew she should be scared out of her mind right now. Maybe it was because and alien attack seemed too unrealistic, something that only happens in movies or dreams. But she was sure their weapons were real world deadly and decided to focus on something else.
Like the fact that she had nothing to duck behind anymore and there was an alien coming at her.
It hadn’t seen her yet, luckily. So, she decided to take a few steps back and hide behind a parked car so it was between her and the monster. The car was parked parallel to the street. Too focused on keeping the car between the two, Izzy hadn’t noticed the two aliens on the street.
A horrible screech made her realise quickly that she had a problem. Her braid hit the car as she spun around to the aliens on the street.
They were staring at her with their horrible, glowing eyes. Both had their glowing spear-guns aimed at her and were powering up.
Izzy could only watch wide-eyed. Her feet were like glued to the ground and her whole life flashed before her eyes. She had to be the most pathetic runaway ever.
Just as she thought she had taken her last breath, both aliens were hit by a huge frisbee. No, wait, not a frisbee. Izzy had heard enough stories to know that that was the legendary shield of Captain America. Looking in the direction of where it had come from, she realised that it wasn’t just Captain Americas shield. It was Captain freaking America himself.
“Hey, are you okay kid?” the super soldier asked her.
Her mouth was open and she quickly closed it. Had he spoken to her? Probably, no other kid was stupid enough to walk around during the end of the world.
“You’re- you’re Captain America.” Idiot.
But the Captain only chuckled.
“Where are your parents? They’re probably already worried about you.”
Shit. Think, Izzy.
“Uh, yeah. You’re right. I better get going,“ she said and turned around.
She took a step and turned back around.
“It was a huge honor meeting you, Captain.” She smiled and sprinted away.
That went well, she thought.

Isabelle didn’t get too far before the aliens started dropping to the ground. Why exactly that happened, she had no idea. She was still alive and that was all that counted.
Now she just had to find a place to stay. Couldn’t be so difficult, right?
Turns out, finding shelter is quite difficult.
