Work Text:
Her phone buzzed beside her computer.
It was a message from Lena, which was a bit odd because they only used text messages to talk about business, mostly. And odd because it was almost midnight. Whew! Kara only realized just then that she should’ve left CatCo hours ago, but she was too invested typing furiously because she didn’t want to miss her deadline – even if she still had like two days left.
She opened the text.
Lena
Hey, it’s been a while. What’s going on w you? And CatCo? Hmu w the tea
Kara frowned at her phone and had to double check that this was, in fact, Lena texting her. Maybe someone stole her phone? No, that couldn’t be possible; she asked about CatCo so it had to be her, and Lena would let her know if something happened anyway.
The number was still the same. Weird.
Kara
Hi, you. Working late :( are you okay? And umm, I don’t know about tea? I didn’t have dinner yet, but we can have brunch tomorrow together if you want? x
She was a bit confused, she wasn’t going to lie, but it was getting late and remembering she hadn't got any food in the past hours, she hurried to finish her draft and flew to her apartment, ready to get into her pajamas and maybe order a pizza or two.
.
Her phone buzzed again when Kara was getting ready for bed.
Lena
Yeah i’m okay but that didn’t answer my question???? But sure, see you tomorrow!
Okay, that was another weird text. Kara figured there was no need to reply, because usually they’d meet at the same place and time. But she made a mental note to ask Lena if everything was okay, because she was a bit concerned.
.
Of course she didn’t ask—they got too distracted catching up and Kara didn’t notice anything weird or out of the ordinary, so that eased her mind. Lena was okay, and she was glad that they were able to get together after not seeing each other for a while.
Well… only a week, but that was a lot of time for them, okay? Kara was spoiled and she got used to seeing her best friend so often that sometimes she’d get some kind of withdrawals. Luckily for her, she could be at Lena’s in a matter of seconds whenever she wanted. Perks of having superpowers or something.
.
It always happened at the most random times, Lena texting Kara with some indescribable message.
Kara was grocery shopping with Alex, something about her diet not including enough greens and other stuff that Kara blocked out because she knew that Alex was going to force her to eat “healthy” anyway.
She pulled her phone from her pocket.
Lena
That picture you posted on ig?
*chef kiss*
Chef? Did Lena know she was grocery shopping? Could she be any more cryptic?
Kara
???

She tapped her screen to open the picture and it was just a wig in the air with the words “it flew” written over it.
Really, was Lena okay?
She stopped and sighed, still staring at her phone, and Alex immediately turned around to face Kara.
“Hey, is everything okay? You look worried, what is it?”
Kara simply shook her head and hurried to her side. “It’s just… what does this mean?” she asked, handing her phone to Alex, the picture still up.
“Pretty sure that’s a wig, Kara.” Alex said, matter of factly.
“ I know that , Alex. But like, what does it mean? I don’t know… Lena is being weird.”
“She sent you that?” she raised an eyebrow. “Just ask her.”
“But I did!”
Alex just shrugged and kept walking.
Well, if you could count sending three question marks asking her .
.
The next one arrived a few days later, but this time Kara did ask her. Lena just ignored it and said she wasn’t hacked or anything and was quick to change the subject. It was kind of hard to argue with Lena or get her point across when the brunette wouldn’t stop talking, but she seemed so happy and bubbly (which was unlike her) so Kara let it go.
She braced herself, Kara just really wasn’t in the mood for riddles or confusing texts—Lena was very confusing as it was, Kara really didn’t need to add another thing to the list of things that confused her.
Lena
Reading this very well written article about a young woman who’s going to change the course of science and she’s adopted too omg i feel seen
Okay, but what the fuck?
Kara could understand the words despite the lack of punctuation, and the first sentence even made sense, but really, what in the world…?
Kara
Lena, excuse my language, but what the fuck does that mean?
Lena
🙄
Don’t be such a local, aren’t you a reporter?? Do u research
She crossed a line, Lena definitely crossed a line but Kara didn’t have enough energy in her to fight her. Even if she didn’t understand the text…again. But she knew there was some hidden meaning and that she should feel insulted.
How could Lena doubt Kara’s ability as a reporter?
She huffed and crossed her arms over her chest, like an upset toddler. Apparently she wasn’t hiding her annoyance very well, because Nia showed up to her side with a concerned look on her face.
“Okay, spill. What’s wrong?”
For whatever reason, Kara didn’t want to admit she was upset with Lena, it was going to lead to a lot of questions and she probably didn’t even know all the answers.
(Thinking too much about Lena sometimes gave her a headache, so she would always choose not to think about her. If she ignored her feelings, they weren’t there.)
“Oh, it’s nothing, Nia. Don’t worry about it.”
The younger woman just stared at Kara for like a whole minute, not saying anything.
“Really, it’s nothing.”
“I don’t buy it. You’ve been glaring at your phone for a while now.” she frowned. “Who are you texting? Some secret lover?”
See? Questions that she didn’t have the answer for. Because Lena wasn’t a secret or a lover, but…
Kara sighed.
“Just…,” Kara pulled up the thread with Lena and held up her phone so Nia could see. “You can scroll if you want. I just… I don’t understand a single word she’s saying.”
She watched as Nia took her phone and read through the text exchange between them, and then started laughing hysterically. Okay, Kara was even more confused now.
“Kara, don’t you have twitter?” Nia asked, like that was the answer for all her questions. “Look, nevermind, it’s not important. But oh my god, Lena’s actually funny, wow.”
“She is, but I fail to see how that’s relevant to me not getting her texts.”
“I’m just gonna email you a glossary in five minutes and then you’ll get it.” Nia leaned down and gave her a quick hug. “Don’t worry your pretty little head, she didn’t say anything bad. Let me go back to my desk real quick.”
.
Kara
Hey Lena, that picture you posted on your ig?
A snack
The answer didn’t come immediately, and Kara was a little disappointed because she thought she did so well , Nia would be proud.
Instead, she got a notification.

Mentioned you in their story
She was a bit scared to open it, to be quite honest. She only prepared herself to text Lena, was she ready to take on another social media platform?
Tapping her screen, Kara finally opened the instagram story. It was Lena’s close friends list. Huh, she didn’t even know she was there.
The picture was a selfie of Lena laughing but covering her mouth with one hand, as if she couldn’t contain her laughter. She was so beautiful, even if you couldn’t see her whole face.
There was a text that read “my irl finally getting my texts and humor. took u long enough 😭😭😭 love you @kdanvers”
Kara tried not to overthink the “love you” too much because she knew Lena meant it in a friendly way, so instead she just laughed at the picture and the fact that she actually knew what irl meant now.
She liked the story and got a text only a few moments later.
Lena
Come over?
.
So maybe Kara hurried to finish work early, go back to her place to get changed and then head to Lena’s. So what if she was in a hurry to see her? It was completely normal to miss your best friend.
Kara landed on Lena’s balcony but it took her a whole minute to go inside.
Lena greeted her with a huge smile on her face, and nodded towards the donuts box next to her.
“So you think I’m a snack, huh?”
Lena smirked, and Kara actually blushed. Maybe now she wasn’t in a rush to talk to the brunette anymore.
