Heaven

Summary:

Falling for Fitz was like falling through the sky and hitting the ground too hard. Falling for Keefe was like falling for heaven.

Work Text:

Inspired by the song Heaven by Julia Michaels

Heaven
A KOTLC Song-fic

Love's my religion but he was my faith
Something so sacred so hard to replace
Fallin' for him was like fallin' from grace

The first boyfriend she had ever had was the man of her dreams. He was cute, he was protective, and he was a telepath just like her. When she was falling for him it was like falling through the sky, fast and leaving her with a floaty feeling in her belly. But she hit the ground too hard and he wasn’t the man she thought he was. He wasn’t the right one for her despite what everyone kept telling her. Fitz just wasn’t enough.

All wrapped in one he was so many sins
Would have done anything, everything for him
And if you ask me I would do it again

Despite what her mind was telling her, her heart was saying something else. It latched onto the boy with the broken smirk, the boy with scars inside and lonely eyes. Falling for him was slow and she never noticed until it was too late. Her heart danced in her chest as she thought about the idiot who stole her heart and ran away with it one too many times.

No need to imagine
'Cause I know it's true
They say, "All good boys go to heaven"
But bad boys bring heaven to you
It's automatic
It's just what they do
They say, "All good boys go to heaven"
But bad boys bring heaven to you

Spending time with him was different than spending time with the others. Despite his own troubles, he would put everything down to listen to her whine about how difficult this thing was or how frustrating that person was. He didn’t complain and he watched with understanding eyes and gave good advice whether she wanted it or not. His presence was calming and he even made her laugh when she felt like she had nothing to laugh about.

You don't realize the power they have
Until they leave you and you want them back
Nothing in this world prepares you for that

The first time Keefe ran, was to run to the other side. At first she didn’t understand why. At first she thought it was through the belief that there was something he wanted to prove (he did) but what it was she didn’t see through her hurt. Sophie did what she always did. She followed him, latching on at the last second so that he wouldn’t leave her behind. In the end he still left, but he protected her from those who would harm her. Her heart squeezed itself in her chest.

I'm not ashamed that he wasn't the one
Had no idea what we would become
There's no regrets I just thought it was fun

The weeks following were filled with thoughts of him. His smile, his eyes, the fear in his face being the last thing she saw before the light whisked her away. Keefe consumed her thoughts as night and hovered on the edge of her mind during the day. She missed him.

No need to imagine
'Cause I know it's true
They say, "All good boys go to heaven"
But bad boys bring heaven to you
It's automatic
It's just what they do
They say, "All good boys go to heaven"
But bad boys bring heaven to you
Ooh
Ooh
Ooh

She remembers the first time they met.

I still remember the moment we met
The touch that he planted, the garden he left
I guess the rain was just half that effect

She had been hurt in alchemy and had been sent on her way to find the Healing Center (wherever that was) when she had gotten lost. Lost in thought and lost in the school, both lead her to find a boy with blond hair and pretty ice blue eyes. He had been reclining on a bench like a movie character does when they’re introduced into the main character’s life.
“You must be lost.” He had said to her. Sophie remembers that the sudden appearance of the strange boy had startled her. Looking back now, she can’t remember why. Maybe it was the bright green uniform he had worn, maybe it was the way he seemed to see right through her, or maybe it was the way that Keefe seemed to know everything about her already.
Keefe helped her to the Healing Center and seemed to hang around for no apparent reason other than to skip lessons. He stuck like glue to her friend group afterwards and eventually she couldn’t imagine doing anything without him. He had crawled under her skin and nestled himself into her heart without her notice after that first day.

No need to imagine
'Cause I know it's true
They say, "All good boys go to heaven"
But bad boys bring heaven to you
It's automatic
It's just what they do
They say, "All good boys go to heaven"
But bad boys bring heaven to you
Ooh
Ooh
Ooh

Loving Keefe was different from liking Fitz. It was warm and (almost) calming. They bright out the best and the worst in each other. When she was scared Keefe showed up to protect her. When she was sad, he would draw her a picture or make her laugh. When she was angry, he held her hand and sent her calming breezes until she was ready to face the world again. And when Keefe needed a shoulder to cry on or a friend to stand at his side when the world was against him, she held her head up high and carried the weight of his world on her shoulders, so that he wouldn’t have to for a few hours. Being with him was like being in heaven.
