You ran. Where you were running to you had no idea. All you knew was that you had to get away. Fast. Or you would die. Your lungs were burning, although you didn’t run for that long yet. You cursed your low stamina and pushed forward. A hungry demon was close behind you. The irony of the situation didn’t miss you. You almost laughed.. You were the mate of the demon king Kibutsuji Muzan and yet you were running from a lowly demon for your life.
“Believe me, if you eat me you will pay with your life for that,” you had tried to persuade him earlier but he didn’t listen. As soon as you noticed that your words fell on deaf ears you had made a run for it. You were running through a forest, your thin nightgown barely protecting you from the cold night air. Your feet were scratched up and you were leaving a trail of blood behind. The wind was howling in your ears, it was almost too loud, you couldn’t hear the demon running behind you. You turned around to see if he was still there and to your shock he had almost caught up to you.
You screamed and tried to run even faster. The adrenaline in your blood system helping you with that. What should you do? Unlike the demon you couldn’t run forever. Sooner or later your stamina would run out and the way it was looking it would happen rather soon.
You were no demon slayer. You were just a normal girl. You had no katana and even if you did, you had no idea how to use it. There was no way for you to defend yourself. If you wanted a chance to survive you had to outsmart the demon. But although you didn’t consider yourself dumb, you knew you weren’t smart enough for that. You had nothing left but to run and pray. Pray that Muzan would find you somehow.
You had promised him you’d be fine. When he told you he had to leave to deal with a mess the lower ranks made, you were sure everything would be fine. How much could happen in one night? Apparently a demon could break into your house and try to eat you. You had been far too comfortable by Muzan’s side, knowing he’d protect you from anyone and anything.
Suddenly you stumbled over a branch. Your knees, elbows and chin made hard contact with the forest ground below. A scream of pain left your lips. Shit, shit, shit! Why did you have to fall? That was your death sentence.
At that moment you remembered something. Your first meeting with Muzan.
You were born into a cult. Your parents worshipped a demon called Doma. You were 18 years old when your parents offered you to him. They meant to offer you up as a mistress for him but what they didn't know was that Doma intended to eat you.
"What shall I do with you?" he had asked and ran a finger over your chubby cheeks. A sly smile on his lips. You didn't know what was going on. Your gut feeling was telling you to run. You felt like a mouse in front of a snake but your head wasn't aware of any danger. This was Doma, the one touched by the gods. There was no reason for you to be afraid. And yet you couldn't help the tears that collected in your eyes.
"Shh, shh, shhh!" Doma's finger rested against your lips. "Don't cry my dear. You will finally know true happiness and peace. I will lead you to paradise."
"Are you still doing this, Doma?" a deep voice asked suddenly. Your head turned around. You didn't hear anyone enter Doma's room so you were surprised where the handsome stranger was coming from. The man was dressed like a westerner, in a pair of white slacks a black dress shirt and jacket and a white tie.
You looked back at Doma only to discover that he was on his hands and knees, bowing down deeply to the strange man. Not knowing what else to do, you did the same.
“Muzan-sama, such a pleasant surprise,” said Doma standing up again. “What are you doing here?”
“I was looking for a subordinate who I could entrust with a special task,” said the man, stepping closer to the two of you. You could feel his eyes drill into you.
“But I see, you have some excellently trained subordinates yourself.”
You dared to look up and your eyes were met with a pair of plum red ones. His eyes were fixed on you for quite some time. Both of you barely noticed how Doma agreed with Muzan about his worshippers. You could see true curiosity in his eyes behind a curtain of coldness. Muzan walked over to you and took your chin between his fingers, forcing you to look up at him.
“What’s the deal with this one?” he asked.
“Oh this?” said Doma and crouched down behind you. He put his arms around your soft waist, pulling your body close to his chest. “She’s an offering from a very nice couple. They have been loyal worshippers. I think I’m going to lead them to paradise soon.”
A shudder went down your spine.
“What a nice offering,” Muzan mumbled, letting go of your chin.
“She is, isn’t she?” Doma said inhaling your scent and pressing you tighter to his body. “And she’s so nice and soft. Not too thin, she looks like she was fed well. Her meat must be delicious. I can’t wait to eat her up.”
The horror was visible on your face and your body couldn’t move in shock. Doma laughed at your expression.
“Look at the way she looks. Isn’t it adorable?” He leaned in until his mouth was right next to your ear. “That’s right, my offering. I’m going to tear that flesh from your bones and enjoy every bite of it.”
“Give her to me.”
Doma’s laugh stilled.
“What?” he asked.
“Give her to me,” repeated Muzan casually. It didn’t sound like he just requested someone to hand over a human person. “I want her.”
“But she’s my offering!” Doma objected. He pushed you away from him, making you fall on your hands, back into a bowing position. The demon stomped towards his master. Muzan, despite being a couple of inches shorter, didn’t look intimidated at all. He looked almost bored. He cocked his head.
“Did I stutter?” he asked, his voice full of malicious intent.
Doma stepped back. For a second his face continued to scowl but then he planted a smile on his lips.
“Alright then,” he said. “Hopefully she’ll be to your taste.”
“Oh, I’m sure she will,” said Muzan. You got up again and gazed upon him in fear. Once again he took your chin between his fingers, an evil smile on his face. “But let’s see what she’s made out of first.”
Muzan didn’t kill you after that. Like he had said, he wanted to see what you were made out of. The first couple of weeks were a living hell, but somehow you managed to sneak into the demon king’s heart.
You turned around on the ground back in the present. You saw with shock that the demon was standing above you.
“What a lovely meal. You look so nice and fat and juicy!” exclaimed the demon, pocking you into your plump thigh.
“Please!” you pleaded not knowing what else to say.
“Please what? Please eat me? ” the demon mocked. “Okay, I will do that, my lovely little piggy.” He snickered. It was a disgusting sound that turned your stomach upside down. The demon leaned closer down towards you. Saliva dripped from his fangs and down on your face. You screamed again and closed your eyes. Suddenly you heard an awful crack and ripping sound. The next second you felt a heavy weight on top of you. You carefully opened your eyes again only to be greeted with a horrible sight. The demon lost his head. It was ripped from his shoulders. And his body had fallen down on top of you, straining your nightgown with his blood. Another scream made its way out of your throat. You quickly crawled away from the headless body, that was still flinching, clearly alive without its head.
You looked to your right to see Muzan, holding the head of the demon in his hand. His eyes were gleaming in the dark. The veins at the side of his face stood out from his skin and he had his fangs bared. He was angry beyond belief. You had only seen him this angry once before and it was a day you’d never forget. You had never seen this much blood before.
“Do you see her?” Muzan spoke to the head, pointing at you. His voice was laced with venom. “She is mine. You understand? Mine! How dare you try to eat what’s mine!”
“I’m sorry, Muzan-sama! I’m sorry! I didn’t know. I didn’t know! Please spare my life!” The demon begged and begged but Muzan wouldn’t listen. He threw his head away from him and then he walked over to where you sat. For a moment his eyes turned soft and he carefully stroked your cheek. But then all of his anger returned at once. He picked up the body like it weighed nothing and pushed it against a tree. He ripped a thick branch off of the tree and pierced the demon’s body with it, pinning it to the tree.
“You’ll stay there until the sun rises,” said Muzan. “And then you’ll crumble away like you never existed.”
You could hear the head pleading to be left alive. Saying he didn’t know and begging Muzan for mercy. It fell on deaf ears.
Meanwhile Muzan walked back over to you. “Are you alright?” he whispered and you nodded. Then he picked you up with his inhuman strength. You always felt light as a feather when he carried you. He carried you back through the forest.
As soon as you reached the safety of your home Muzan pressed a kiss to your temple and let you down.
“Are you sure you’re not hurt?” he asked. You looked down on yourself. There was blood everywhere but little of it was your own. You had scraped your knees, elbows and chin but despite that you were all good.
“Yes, I’m fine,” you whispered. Tears of relief were burning in your eyes and you couldn’t help but throw yourself back into his arms. The tears started to flow down your cheeks freely and your body got shaken with sobs. Muzan pulled you closer to his chest. He was always a little lost when it came to comforting you. It just wasn’t in his nature to be comforting to other people and he never tried to do it before meeting you. He awkwardly petted you on the head and let his fingers play with your hair. The way he struggled made you giggle a little and Muzan was glad that his actions had an impact.
“I’m sorry I wasn’t there,” he whispered in your ear. “I should have never left.”
“No,” you protested and pulled away from him a little. “It was my fault. I should have been more careful.”
Suddenly his eyes got darker. Anger entered his features once more. “Right, you should’ve. You promised me you’d be alright. How dare you be so careless!”
“I’m sorry,” you sobbed. He immediately switched back to his soft and comforting expression.
“It’s fine. You’re alright now. But you can count yourself lucky that I came back sooner. I thought I had already lost you when I smelled your blood in the air.”
“I know. I’m sorry,” you repeated, snuggling back into his embrace. Both of you were silent for a while and just enjoyed the closeness of your bodies.
Then he said, “Let me turn you into a demon.”
You pulled away again looking into Muzan’s eyes.
“No,” you said with finality to it.
“Why not?” asked Muzan. “You could live forever. With me. Does that sound so bad?”
“That sounds wonderful,” you said. “But I can’t become a demon.”
“But why?” he asked, slowly losing his temper once more. “You love me and I love you. So why don’t you want to be like me? And be with me forever?”
You bit your lower lip. Not answering him. He took a step away from you, hurt flashing over his face.
“Do you have someone else?”
“What? No, never!” you said quickly. “Like you said, I love you, but I don’t want to become a demon.”
“But why?” he was full on screaming now. “If what you say is true I don’t understand. Don’t you get that I’m just trying to protect you?”
You stayed silent, still struggling to say what’s on your mind. So he kept going.
“You see what happened today. You got almost killed! Humans are so weak and they die so quickly. Compared to demons they are like insects so why are you so determined to stay human? Don’t you understand that I don’t want to lose you!”
“But what if I change?” you screamed back at him. You were just as worked up as him by this point. “What if you turn me into a demon and my personality changes so you don’t want me anymore? Or even worse: what if I forget about you?”
Muzan took both of your hands into his. “Even if you change, I’ll still love you. And I’d be there if you get turned. I would remind you of who I am to you. There is no reason to be afraid.”
“But I don’t want to forget the memories we’ve made,” you choked out. “I don’t want to forget a single moment. I really want to remember them and not just through your stories.”
After that Muzan was speechless. He knew he couldn’t take your worries away. So he did what he could. He put his hands on your cheeks and wiped away your tears. He leaned in closer to you until his forehead touched yours.
“I can’t promise you that that won’t happen,” he started. “But I can promise you that we can make new memories. An endless amount of memories.”
“Really?” you asked hopefully.
“Yes, really.” And with that he kissed you. His lips melted against yours. Butterflies erupted in your stomach. Oh you loved when he kissed you. Each time felt like it was the first time. The way he moved. The way he pressed your body closer to his. It was addicting.
He carefully licked your lips, making you gasp. He used that opportunity to slip his tongue into your mouth. The kiss got even deeper and Muzan’s hands started to wander your body. Worshipping your curves and grabbing onto the fat on your hips. Both of your tongues moved in what felt like a never ending dance. And as you stood there, leaning against his strong body, you knew that he was right. No matter what happened, somehow you’d make it work. There was nothing in this world that could separate you two anymore.
