Work Text:

None of this was meant to happen. Neither of them were meant to be here. Lydia only came over for the weekend, they had plans to go out and have dinner before fucking the rest of the weekend away. She was never meant to get wrapped up in this, but Batman needed help with Scarecrow, and he was the closest available. Lydia wanted to tag along, because of course she did, she never backs away from a fight.

She's on the ground, a deep wound in her stomach and a stab wound in her thigh from Scarecrow. She's already had the antidote, given to her as soon as Scarecrow was subdued, but she's still on heavy drugs. She's unfocused and in pain, blood spilling over her hands as she clutches her abdomen. He's just lucky she's not screaming or actively hallucinating, that wouldn't have helped.

Jason is by her side as soon as he's free, cupping her face and making her look him in the eyes. Her eyes are glazed over, not quite able to look at him. "Look at me, you're okay yeah? You're going to be okay." He can feel Bruce's eyes on him, burning into his back, but he doesn't care. He's more worried about Lydia, and isn't that new? He doesn't really care about people.

"What got stabbed?" Is the only thing Lydia answers with, now looking down at her stomach. "I don't want to get new organs, I like mine." Jason let's out a soft laugh, letting his forehead rest against hers. He can hear the sound of the Batmobile, it's still quite distant but it's getting closer. Good, she'll be okay at the cave.

"Funnily enough, the positioning would have stabbed your womb...or your bladder." Lydia let's out a laugh before wincing.

"Good thing I don't have one of those, would have sucked if it got damaged." She moves her head to his neck, letting out a heavy sigh. "Hurts a lot." Jason nods in response, looking up as the batmobile pulls up near them.

"We've got to move now, okay? Gotta take you to the cave to get better." He pulls away from her, ignoring her whining despite the want in his heart. "Come on." He slides his arms under her, picking her up and holding her close.

Bruce doesn't say anything to him as he carries her to the car, placing her in the back as he sits next to her. He crosses his arms as Bruce gets into the car, beginning the drive to the cave. The batmobile blasts through the streets, the urgency of the situation finally settling in. Jason reached out and grabbed her hand, squeezing it tight. There was no response from her, but it was okay because she was still breathing. She was still alive.

It didn't take long for the batmobile to pull up inside the cave, Alfred already ready to take Lydia from the car to tend to her wounds. The only thing left to do is wait.

It took 6 hours. Although half of those were surgery, the other half were waiting for her to wake up. Jason was right by her side the whole time, barely spending any time to tend to his own wounds. He held her hand the whole time, not daring to let go just in case.

There were two things Lydia learnt when she woke up. One, she was on so many drugs that it felt like her brain and entire body were made of cotton, and two, she was in an incredible amount of pain.

Although apparently it was more than two things because when she blinked to clear her very blurry vision, all she saw was a large cave ceiling. She narrowed her eyes and her drug-addled brain helpfully supplied her with the memory of Jason mentioning the batcave. Awesome.

Speaking of Jason, there was a weight in her right hand that she assumed was him. Otherwise her dad managed to sneak into the batcave, which cool, but not possible. Her dad's not that sneaky, so it must be Jason. She'd turn her head to check but she doesn't think she's able to, even moving her eyes was a lot of effort.

She tries to speak but all that comes out is a pathetic whimper, her right hand beginning to grip Jason's as tears begin welling in her eyes from the pain. God she really hopes Batman isn't here to see what a pathetic mess she is. That would be one hell of an introduction. 'Hi Batman, I'm sleeping with your son and I'm also unable to take a stab without crying.' Stupid.

Jason shoots up in his seat as soon as Lydia's grip tightens, cutting him off from his dozing. He watches as she whimpers, her eyes wide open and staring at the ceiling as tears slowly slip down. "You're okay." He's not really sure what else to say, words couldn't fix this, couldn't fix her pain. She whines again, almost like a reply. "Alfred will be here soon, he'll give you more painkillers, they'll put you back to sleep but you'll be better soon okay?" He's aware he's rambling, but he doesn't care. Right now it's just the two of them, and Lydia is more than willing to put up with his rambling. The only response he gets is a squeeze of her hand. Despite all the worry inside him, he smiles.

The next time Lydia wakes up, she's in a bedroom, with an actual ceiling, and a very comfy bed. She can also move now, her body isn't screaming at her anymore which is wonderful. It also means she can sit up, although it does take a considerable amount of effort, and does actually hurt still. Small victories she supposes. Jason is slumped over by the bed, his arms crossed as he naps in the chair, Lydia feels quite sympathetic for his neck. There are dark bags under his eyes and she assumes that he really hasn't gotten a lot of sleep.

He looks pretty when he's sleeping, all vulnerable and relaxed. He's still frowning in his sleep though. Oh well, some things can't be fixed. Even with the frown, he's gorgeous. His hair drooping over his forehead, his chest slowly rising and falling with his breathing. There's a furrow in his brow that she just wants to kiss. God she adores him. She's sure there's a fond smile on her face.

As if sensing the eyes on him, Jason wakes, his eyes blinking open. He meets Lydia's gaze and jumps into action, getting up from the chair to check on her bandages. He's barely halfway through when he hears Lydia's laughter. He looks up at her and she's just grinning at him, a strange look on her face...oh, it's an adoring look. He's seen the same look when she's texting Cullen, or on the phone to him. Now it's directed at him, and he's not too sure what to do.

"You're such a mother hen." Lydia reaches a hand out to pet his hair, threading her fingers through his locks. "I'm okay, already healing. Love being a meta." She chuckles, her hand moving to cup his cheek. "I appreciate the sentiment though."

Jason flushes in her grip, his eyes flittering around her face, refusing to meet her gaze. "I was worried about you. You could have died." Lydia's face softens even more and Jason just wants to burry himself again, the grave was less embarrassing than this.

"But I'm okay. Because you helped me." She lifts his chin, forcing him to look at her. She doesn't force him to make direct eye contact, which he really appreciates because otherwise he wouldn't have been able to do what he planned. Which was kiss her. Hard.

She let's out a surprised noise before smiling into the kiss, holding his face with both hands. When he pulls away, there's a dazed smile on her face. Right, she's still on quite a few painkillers. "Well that was nice, is there going to be more of that?" A hand trails down his chest and he immediately snatches her wrist, shaking her head.

"Not while you're drugged."

"I've had worse. Was actually drugged during sex once, can you believe that? It was pretty fun but a little warning would have been nice." Lydia giggles like it was a funny joke and not a horrifying admission. Jason immediately wants to decapitate everyone that has hurt her.

"Right well...I'd prefer not to while you're drugged." She pouts in response, huffing a little before settling back against the pillows.

"Fine, but you owe me. 'Specially after tonight." Guilt immediately filled Jason's face and there was no way Lydia was letting that stay. "Not because of the injury. Because we had a whole sex filled weekend planned and it hasn't been fulfilled." She reaches a hand out, taking his into hers.

"We always have next weekend." He sighs, shuffling so he's led next to her, her head resting on his shoulder. "I really was worried about you." It was quiet for a minute, the only sound being the pairs breathing. "It scared me. I thought I was going to lose you..." He stares at the wall in front of him, not wanting to look at her, lest he loses all courage. "I really care about you. More than a friendly care." He can feel her looking at him, her hand tightening in his. "This is stupid because it'll hurt more if I do actually lose you but...I can't live with you not knowing how much I care about you."

It's quiet again and Jason's starting to panic. He doesn't panic. Guess today is full of new emotions for him. "Jason." Her voice is quiet. "Please look at me." He does, there's tears in her eyes but a smile on her face. "I care about you so much, you mean a lot to me Jason. I'm just glad you feel the same." She rests her forehead against his. He smiles.

"Be my girlfriend?"

"Of course dummy." He leans into kiss her and in that moment, everything's okay. It's just the two of them and everything's perfect.

Notes:

I've finally written something again! This is definitely different from my other one lmao. I've recently got back into DC and I absolutely adore Jason Todd and I fully believe he deserves nice things. There might be a few more DC things in the works. I have developed a love for a poly idea between Jason, Lydia, Cullen, and Bull. No it makes no sense, yes I still adore it. There will be some content for that in the future if you're willing to indulge me lmao

I hope this is okay because I've been having one of those times where I think everything I write is absolute crap so I'm going out on a limb here
