INT. Family video - day

We scan around Family Video. Customers walk through multiple aisles looking through various movies. We land on Steve restocking shelves.
Steve
Town is on fire and people are coming in here wanting to watch movies.
Robin
They're probably just wanting to take there minds off everything going on.
Robin quickly places movies back on the shelves not really listening.
Steve
How? You look out your window and it looks Pompeii.
Robin
What?
Steve
Pompeii? You know the-
Robin
Volcano. Yes I know.
A customer approaches them.
Customer
Excuse me. Where can I find The Towering Inferno?
Robin
Horror. Two sections over.
Customer
Cool. Thanks.
Steve looks at Robin baffled.
Steve
The Towering Inferno?
Robin
That is what he asked for.
Steve
Why would anyone want to watch that right now? We are basically living it! You know? Fire. Impending doom. I just-
Robin
Steve. Nothing has happened since..
Steve stops in his tracks, calming.
Steve
Yeah. Yeah you're right.
Steve starts to restock some films.
Steve
Do you think anything is gonna happen?
Robin
Tough to say. We saw him die, vanish. Whatever you want to call it.
Keith appears behind the counter and he's ticked.
Keith
Harrington!
Steve looks to Keith.
Steve
Yeah?
Keith
Phone call for you!
Steve
Who is it?
Keith
Do I look like your damn assistant?!
Steve looks to Robin and then walks to the desk. He answers the phone.
Dustin v.o
Steve!
Steve
Henderson. What? I'm working.
Dustin v.o
Restocking shelves is work?
Steve
Shut up! A jobs a job. It pays.
Dustin v.o
Yeah. Whatever. Need you to pick me up from Hellfire right now. I'm already late for dinner at the Wheelers.
Steve
I can't-
Dustin v.o
Please!
Steve
Shit.
Keith looks away like he hasn't been listening the entire time.
Steve
Keith..
Keith
What?
Steve
I gotta go pick up Dustin. He's stranded and-
Keith
Yeah. Very funny. You've missed two days. You owe me extra hours.
Steve
Come on-
Keith
No discussion! Now stock the shelves!
Robin walks to the counter. Keith reads his comic.
Robin
What's going on? You two are scaring the entire store.
Steve gets an idea.
Steve
I actually need you to go grab Henderson and run him home.
Robin
What?
Keith
What?
Steve
Come on, Keith. She has perfect attendance. I'll stay here. She'll pick up Dustin, drop him off and be right back.
Robin
What?
Keith
No.
Steve thinks.. then whispers to Keith.
Steve
I'll bring you a bag of Cheetos Puffs for the entire week.
Keith looks between Steve and Robin.
Keith
Make it a month.
Steve
Alright!
Steve turns to Robin.
Steve
Come on.
Robin
Come where?
Steve
Just follow me.

EXT. family video parking lot - day
Steve leads Robin to his car. He pulls the keys from his pocket and slowly begins to hand them to her.
Steve
Shit. You still don't have your license?
Robin
Nope. Poor. Remember?
Steve looks to the concrete then back to Robin.
Steve
Okay. Just be careful with her.
Robin
It's a her?
Steve
It. Be careful with it.
Robin
Is her name, Nance?
Steve gives her a look.
Steve
That one hurt, Robin.
Robin
Aww. I'll be back in a jiff.
Robin starts the car.
Steve
You know how to get there?
Robin
Yep. We've dropped them there before.
She looks in the rearview mirror and pushes the gas. The car jolts forward!
Robin
Oh my god!
Steve
Jesus! No! This isn't happening!
Robin hits the break, puts the car in reverse and is on her way.
Robin
I've got it now!
Robin peels out of the parking lot as Steve has his hands on his head. His face full of fear.
INT. Wheeler house - evening
Karen is at the counter whipping up some dinner. Grilled chicken with mashed potatoes and vegetables. Ted sits in his recliner. Holly plays next to him.
Ted
So.. How's dinner coming honey?
Karen
As good as it can be.
Ted
Smells delicious.
Karen
Can you grab me the salt from the pantry. This one is empty.
Ted stays in the chair..
Ted
Just use the step ladder.
Karen exhales and then enters the pantry. She gets on the ladder and reaches the salt. She places it back on the counter.
Karen
Nancy! Mike! 15 Minutes till dinner!
INT. Nancy's room - evening
We see Nancy's room. It is nearly empty. She sits on her bed talking on her phone.
Nancy
I don't know. It's weird. Gave away a lot of stuff. I'm not used to seeing my room look like this.
Jonathan v.o
Yeah. I'm sure.
Nancy
So..
Jonathan v.o
You excited for Emerson?
Nancy
Of course. It still just feels weird to leave. I feel like just yesterday I was dressed up as an elf for Mike's dumb D&D campaig--
Argyle v.o
Come on Man!
Jonathan v.o
I gotta run! I'll see you tomorrow.
Nancy
By-
The phone disconnects. Nancy looks at it slowly and then places it down.
EXT. house - night
Robin waits outside parked for Dustin. He emerges from the house running towards the car.
Dustin
Where's Steve?
Robin
He's pinned down at work. Hop in.
Dustin
Did you get your license?
Robin looks out the other window.
Robin
Yes...
Dustin
Don't lie!
Robin
No but Steve trusted me with his car. Get in!
Dustin gets in the passenger seat. The car heads down the street.
Robin
So.. How was it?
Dustin
It was fine. I pictured it going better in my head.
Robin
Did everyone else enjoy it?
Dustin begins to get a little emotional.
Dustin
I don't know..
Robin
Well-
Dustin
I wish I could do it like Eddie.
Robin looks to Dustin.
Dustin
He just had a way of sucking everyone in. You really felt like you were there. Like you were the one fighting, standing your ground, casting spells... running. I promised him I would look after them.
He begins to lose it..
Dustin
I just feel like I'm letting him down...breaking my promise.
Robin
Dustin. You are not letting him down. I didn't know him very well...but I knew him well enough to know he'd be proud of you. Proud of you for trying..
Dustin wipes his face.
Dustin
You think so?
Robin
Yes I do.
Dustin nods and then looks out the window. He rests his head against it.
Dustin
Thanks Robin.
Robin
Don't mention it.
They continue to the Wheeler house.

INT. Family video - night
Steve sits behind the desk. He plays with a slinky. The store is empty.
Steve
So... This is it Steve. This is what rock bottom feels like. Sitting here working at Family Video. Alone. No people. No girls. Playing with a slinky. Isn't that great. Just wonderful.
We hear a car door close. Steve looks out the window. We see a figure come to the entrance. The bell rings and we reveal Chrissy Cunningham.
Steve
Chrissy Cunningham?
Chrissy
Steve Harrington? I didn't know you worked here!
Steve
Yeah. I don't really go around telling everyone. Hey! I work at Family Video and make 7 dollars an hour!
They both share a laugh.
Chrissy
It's nothing to be ashamed of. I love this place.
Steve
Family Video?
Chrissy
Yeah I come in pretty often.
Steve
Well I've never seen you in here.
Chrissy
Well.. I've been here..
A silence..
Steve
Uh. Can I help you find something in particular? Or..?
Chrissy
Not necessarily. Any suggestions?
Steve rounds the counter and walks towards Chrissy.
Steve
Any certain genre? What do you like?
Chrissy
Mostly comedy. But every once in a while I like a good scary movie.
Steve
With everything that just happened let's go with comedy.
Chrissy chuckles. Steve signals for her to follow him.
Steve
Comedy is right this way in.. yep you guessed it.. Aisle C.
Chrissy
Very creative.
They reach aisle C.
Steve
Here we are. Let's see.
Chrissy grabs a DVD.
Chrissy
Fletch?
Steve
Chevy Chase. Not bad.
Chrissy
Not bad isn't good enough.
Steve laughs.
Steve
Alright... How about?
Steve grabs a DVD.
Steve
Breakfast Club. Instant classic.
Chrissy
Seen it! Loved it!
Steve
Okay.
He stops on one film.
Steve
Back to the Future. I love this one.
Chrissy
I haven't seen it but I'm dying too! I didn't think you'd have it in yet! The time travel one right?
He examines the cover.
Steve
Yep... You know. It's funny actually.. There is this scene that.. Michael J. Fox gets up and plays the guitar. Now every time I watch it I think of Eddie. Man you should have heard him play.
Silence between the two..
Chrissy
I actually heard him play once with his band Corroded Coffin.
Steve
Eddie had a band?
Chrissy Nods.
Steve
And the name was corroded coffin?
Chrissy
Yeah.
Steve
That is.. very Eddie.
Chrissy
Yeah it is..
Steve breaks the silence.
Steve
So, Back to the Future it is?
Chrissy
That's the one.
They head back in the direction of the register.
Steve
Alrighty. Now since it's a new release you can only have it out for three days.
Chrissy
Not a problem.
Steve
And of course if you scratch the disk or-
Chrissy
Steve, I know the drill.
Steve
Well then. Here it is.
He places the DVD in a bag.
Steve
All set. Good to see you Chrissy.
Chrissy
You too Steve. Thanks for the help.
She heads for the door and begins to open it.
Steve
You sure you've been in here before? Pretty sure I'd remember if the Queen of Hawkins High was a regular in my store.
Chrissy
Your store? 5 minutes ago you were embarrassed to work here...
She gives him a look..
Steve
Yeah, well. You know I-
She laughs.
Chrissy
Don't worry about it.
She takes a step through the exit and stops. She looks back to Steve.
Chrissy
It's nice to know you work here, King Steve.
Chrissy gives a little wave and leaves. Steve stands at the desk not sure what just happened.

EXT. wheeler house - night
Dustin gets out of the car in the Wheeler driveway.
Dustin
Thanks for the ride Robin. And what you said. It meant a lot.
Robin
Yeah. No problem.
Dustin
See you around.
INT. Wheeler house - night
Dustin runs to the door and knocks. He is greeted by Mike.
Mike
Come on you almost missed it.
Nancy walks down the steps.
Dustin
Sorry my mom couldn't make it so Robin had to give me a ride last minute.
Nancy
Dustin. Robin drove you?
Dustin
Yeah. Shocker right?
Nancy
Yeah. Is she still here?
Dustin
You might be able to catch her if you hurry.
Nancy
Great.
Nancy runs through the front door.
EXT. wheeler house - night
Nancy runs out to the car. Signaling to Robin.
Nancy
Robin! Hey!
Robin pulls over the car and lowers the window.
Robin
Hey Nance! What's up?
Nancy
Nothing I just heard you dropped Dustin off and wanted to say hi. How's Vicki?
Robin
She's good. She's actually been doing a ton of work at the shelter downtown. She's a natural.
Nancy
That's great! What have you been up to?
Robin
Same old. Same old. Nothing new for me... How's Jonathan?
Nancy
He's good. I'm gonna see him again tomorrow. Trying to see him as much as I can before I head out next week.
Robin
Oh my gosh you leave next week! I forgot! Are you getting excited for Emerson?
Nancy
Yeah! Yeah I am. It just feels weird leaving when everything is the way it is. You know?
Robin
Yeah I get it. That would definitely be weird.
Nancy
Well I better get back in there. Don't want to miss dinner.
Robin
Alright. Let's catch up soon.
Nancy
Sounds good.
Nancy begins to step back when she does a double take.
Nancy
What are you doing driving Steve's car?! Did you get a license?
Robin
No... And he had no choice. He was swamped at work and Dustin needed a ride so he asked me to drop him off here.
Nancy
Right. Of course. That makes sense... He let you drive his car without a license?
Robin
It took a lot out of him..
Nancy
I bet...
Nance looks to the ground.
Nancy
How is he?
Robin wants to tell her the truth about how he feels but can't.
Robin
He's good. I actually don't think I've seen him better.
Nancy deflates a bit. Robin catches it.
Nancy
Great! I'm glad to hear that..
Nancy taps the car.
Nancy
I better go. See you around.
Robin
You too.
Robin pulls away. Nancy walks to the house and enters.
INT. Nancy's room - night
Nancy continues to pack things in her room. She puts some remaining clothes in a box and places it by her door. She walks to her desk and opens a drawer.
She grabs an old used notepad and softly tosses it into the trash box. A loose piece of paper falls to the floor.
She walks to it and picks it up.
It reads.
Steve v.o
Dear Nancy. I want you to know I really like you. I think about you all the time and can't help but look at your beautiful face during passing period. You aren't like the other girls and I'd study science every day if it meant I could spend more time with you. I love you Nancy and I hope you feel the same. Steve X
Nance takes a breath and sits on her bed.

Robin arrives back to the store.
Steve
How'd it go?
Robin
Good. Car is safe and sound.
Steve
How about Dustin? Did you get him to the Wheeler's?
Robin
Yep. He's there and should be stuffing his face as we speak. I also caught up a bit with Nanc-
Steve stares off into space..
Steve
Great. Great. Thanks for taking him Robin...
Robin
Are you alright?
Steve looks lost.
Robin
Steve?
Steve
Have you ever seen Chrissy Cunningham in here before?
