Chapter Text
Izuku doesn't get his quirk on his fourth birthday. But that's normal, it should be coming any day now. Parenting forums say to indulge in your child's special interests because they likely relate to your child's quirk. And her child was a reading machine. Just like his father. They miss him so much ever since he died in the villain attack the year prior. Izuku was far smarter than any other child his age so Inko was sure he knew and understood what happened. That didn't mean it didn't affect him.
So once summer begins, she brings Izuku and Katsuki to the UA book fair to cheer him up. Distract him with fantasy and other historical fiction novels he loved so much. Katsuki wasn't very interested but came along anyway because of course he wanted to visit a hero school. He's lounging under a tree when he see's Izuku go down.
"Auntie! Auntie!" He runs to Izuku who's out cold, clutching a hardcover book in his hand. The Players Hand Guide it says. Inko calls for help and Hound Dog brings his limp body to Recovery Girl's Infirmary.
"What happened?" "He was looking at the books and then fell down. This is the book he was holding. Is it his quirk?".
Nezu standing outside the door, overhears, deciding nows the time to introduce himself, so he pushes open the door.
"Good morning, I'm Principal Nezu. I saw everything on the security cameras, may I see that book?" Kat nods and hands it over to the large talking rodent.
"Ma'am we should transfer your son to a hospital, he's alright but they'll be better equip to provide for him" "A-Alright" Inko is frightened but responsive.
*Skip to the Musutafu General Hospital*
Izuku is resting now in a hospital gown with an IV and breathing apparatus, looking so pale. She's no longer responsive, watching her baby, but Mitsuki is there now to comfort her. Kat sits on the floor drawing, waiting for his father to come pick him up.
It isn't until the doctor walks in that Inko perks up again.
“Afternoon, I'll be the doctor in charge of your son's care. First let me assure you that he is fine”. when that does little to reassure her, he continues
“He did not have a quirk seizure but do you know what those are?”
Inko shakes her head no but Mitsuki says
“Yeah, Katsuki is showing signs, we call them pop offs” “What's that mean?”
“A quirk seizure is the unintentional use of one’s quirk. Kat’s hands get sweaty so as to not create uncontrollably large explosions, his hand set off little rumbles that pop off the sweat. It’s harmless but it could become a problem if the kid get nightmares”.
The doctor nods, elaborating
“Yes, they’re usually harmless, just the body’s way of protecting itself. Now Izuku’s mind has done something similar. It’s called a Quirk Coma. He'll come out of it when his mind and body are ready".
"So he got his quirk?"
"We believe your son’s quirk met a very unique requirement factor when he touched that book, but it was too powerful for him to handle at the time. So his brain is reprogramming or upgrading to be better equip for it.”
Kat looks up, 'Powerful quirk?'
“Deku, I mean Izuku got his quirk but now he’s asleep? For how long?”
“Yes Katski, now we don’t know how long it’s going to last but I’m sure he can hear you while he’s out in his brain”
“So I should talk to him? And say what?” the situation puzzles Kat but he's excited for his friend's new quirk.
“How about you read to him? Inko’s cases are piling up so we’ll visit when she can’t so he’s always got someone, Okay?”
“Okay Izuku! I won’t leave you behind. We’ll be heroes together!! Oh and I got Recovery Girl’s autograph because I thought you’d like her quirk. Kinda old to be a hero but you do you”.
“She’s a non combative rescue hero Katski, show some respect”. Mitsuki smirks, brat was funny though
“Since when did you know about heroes?”
Suddenly Mom looks a bit cooler in the four year old's eyes.
“Your father and I may own a fashion magazine but we’re still journalists”.
(Modeled when they were younger. Enjoyed writing and photo journalism, then made it big in some fashion circles and launched their magazine.)
Kat gets up and pleads to his mom,
“Teach me and Izuku! And and Auntie can teach us law!!”
He's so excited, but then his face falls. “What is it Kat?” “What if he can’t hear us? then I’ll have left him behind. I said I wouldn’t!”
'Oh no don’t tantrum, mom problem solving skills activate!'
“How about we get a some journals and a voice recorder, put it in the room while we read and work out loud. That way even if he can’t hear us, he can when he wakes up”.
"YEAH!"
Inko sniffles a bit but thanks the little blond. "He'll be so excited when he wakes up. Make sure to write everything down so you can teach him later".
Very excited Kat, "I promise!"
*Time passes* Kat visits Izuku frequently, always reading and writing on the bed side table that basically become Izuku's desk. Drawings are pinned to the wall and a few textbooks are left open.
A month into Izuku's stay, 28 days to be precise, he starts whimpering in his sleep, eyebrows furrowed, occasionally twitching.
Doctors say it looks like he's going through a growth spurt. It's not until horns emerge from his forehead that the doctors become more and more confused. His teeth are sharper too but why would a dragon mutation quirk cause a quirk coma?
"My husband used to be able to breathe fire so I assume his quirk will be like Hisashi's"
It baffles them even more when after month three, small items in the room start levitating. "And your quirk Midoriya-san?"
"Minor telekinesis, I can only pull small things towards myself".
Doctors aren't sure what's going on so they just have to wait for the kid to wake up.
Its almost a year to the day, Day 364, that Izuku opens his eyes.
"Hi Mom" he whispers with a small smile and she's up, immediately at his side.
"Oh Izuku I missed you so much!" taking his hand. But theres something in it?
"Put this on, don't let them see, He'll explain". and then the doors burst open and doctors are coming in scrambling to make sure this interesting case and patient are okay.
Inko steps back to let them work, back to her chair in the corner, clutching the necklace.
"Just an exam, do not use any quirks on my son".
The doctors nod but begin discussing how they’re shocked to see signs of growth and muscle development instead of muscle atrophy.
But all Inko can concentrate on is how she can smell charcoal and Hisashi’s after shave. Making eye contact with Izuku he nods, steading her mind, she puts on the necklace.
'Hello my little snake, I’ve missed you'. a warm voice says in her head
Inko bursts into tears and almost speaks his name but he quickly says 'Speak in your head love, I can hear you'. She can almost see the smile on his face.
‘Hisashi is that really you?’
'Yes, Izuku’s quirk made it all possible. I’ll explain everything but first we must keep him safe. His quirk is nothing like ours. He has his entire imagination at his finger tips. That type of power will attract the wrong type of people'.
‘Alright what’s first?’
'That’s my love, you haven’t changed a bit! Okay first, make sure no one uses a quirk that can identify his. Calmly tell them that Izuku’s been through enough and since he spent a year in his quirk he knows what it is. You know the law better than me but from what I recall, Izuku has a month to register his quirk'.
‘Yes that’s correct, so did he name his quirk already? Have you two been in his head or somewhere else?’
'He’s named it Imagination Amalgamation
Isn’t that grand? But he was thinking on registering it as a skill mastery quirk called Skill Tree. It’ll be a brain mutation quirk that allows him subtle telekinesis like you'.
‘He’s got my quirk?’ Inko tears up again looking at her exhausted but satisfied looking son. 'He’s able to move small items freely. He also has a bag of holding like in those old games we used to play. My only concern is that he tends to dissociate when he’s really locked into his head thinking but it’s happened less and less over the years'.
‘Years?’ Inko asks?
'Oh shoot, I should have said this earlier. Well but I haven't mentioned where we were either-' He's cut off before he starts to mumble, another trait Izuku got from his dad.
‘Hisashi tell me when and where you two were and in what form? Aren't you, you know’
Dead is left unsaid but he explains
'A year ago tomorrow, Izuku woke up in a field called Green Valley. He called for help and I appeared in the form of an red and yellow fiery orb, or my spirit.
I couldn’t speak yet. I was just so excited to see him again and he thought I was cute. So I followed him around and helped him when I could. We later found out that for every hour in your world it was a week in Green Valley.
So I’ll just tell you now. Izuku is mentally 173 years old. That makes me 193. I never left his side but we did go on epic adventures in a fantasy world for several decades. He’s so intelligent Inko you’ll love it I promise'.
‘Oh Hisashi I’m just happy you’re both back with me. I know I’ll get used to it with time’
The doctors have all left again so Izuku speaks up
“Mom? When can we get out of here?”
Hisashi chimes in
'Yeah don’t worry love he’s got full stats, no need for another night here. The doctors might insist but he’ll really okay'
"You have stats?" she asks Izuku to which he replies "Yeah I'll set it up so you can see them once we're at home". Hisashi hums in agreement in her head
“Well then I’ll have them get started on the discharge papers. I got my EMT license renewed because of Katski so I’ll tell them I’d prefer to take care of you at home”.
“Thanks Mom. You know for not freaking out”.
“Oh she’s freaking out on the inside” Hisashi says merrily, now audible.
“You can talk out loud?” she asks before she can help herself but then Izuku chides “Shh Dad not now. We need to look sane, not talking to a rock”.
“Fine fine" then in Inko's head again 'How about we go home, we talk and then invite over the Bakugo’s? Izuku wants to read through his journals to both families but it’ll be a swore secret'.
She nods and speaks to Izuku
“I’ll tell Mitsuki to come over for a surprise dinner, you do want to surprise Kat right?”
“Fuck Yeah!” a wicked smile crossing his face as Inko shocked fires back
"Izuku langauge!" another laugh from Hisashi as Izuku replies "That was in English, I assumed you didn't want me swearing in Japanese". "You thought correctly now lets get you discharged".
Inko sticks her head out the door, flagging his nurse.
"Your vitals check out, MRI look good, I'll have the quirk doctor come in to discuss everything with you" but before she can leave Inko states
"That won't be necessary, I'd like his discharge papers immediately".
"Ma'am I don't think that the best-" "Izuku and I have a month to register his quirk and I am a certified EMT so I am fully capable of taking care of my son on my own, so if he says he wants to leave, we're leaving".
With a bit more fight than
They walk out of the hospital with two bags. One has his old clothes, a blanket and pillow that they brought from home; while the other is Izuku’s school bag. It looks quite small on him now that he’s grown but the little backpack now contains his entire inventory.
Dressed in grey sweatpants and a hospital sweatshirt, he steps into the back of Inko’s car, but before he even sits down he’s suddenly dressed in baggie black pants that tighten around his knees tucked into large leather boots.
His shirt is a nice charcoal grey henley, unbuttoned showing off a few necklaces. A harness is strapped over top of his shirt and pants like for climbing but also clips into a padded chest vest with pockets. Lastly is an aviator’s jacket with a fur collar.
She looks taken aback until she hears the mirth and delight in her husband’s disembodied laughter.
"Well that's something, you can change clothes with your mind, what else?"
“Yes um well you want a comprehensive list of what I can do or wait until I tell everyone about my training?”
“List some things while we drive honey, nothing scary”.
“Okay hmm, I can touch to ignite things like candles. Snap to summon things. I can conjure notebooks. My backpack is an infinite bag of holding like Marry Poppins”.
“Like who darling?” “I make a lot of 20th century jokes and references now”.
“I’ll have to do some research then, what else?”.
“I can also speak Mandarin Korean English Spanish French and German”.
“Seven languages! Baby that’s fantastic!”
To which Hisashi excitedly elaborates “Try 13 languages! He also knows two sign languages, three computer languages and Draconic” which surprises Inko, having immersed herself in driving
“Oh my goodness, I have to get used to your voice again dear” “Sorry love!”
“No it's alright, now what else dear?” “Well I know several martial arts, I have weapons proficiencies and I’m a king at darts”.
“He’s a real card shark too!” more proud Dad boasting
“Yeah, I’m great a shuffling cards and other sleight of hand tricks. You saw I can change my clothes like magic. I can make other things appear and disappear. I can levitate. Did dad tell you I can use minor telekinesis?”
“Yes darling I’m quite excited to teach you what I know. Katski’s gotten into law and social justice while you were away so I can teach you that too”.
“You’ll have to teach me this world's mechanics too, I’ve definitely forgotten”.
“He’s going to be upset that you’re so much taller than him” which makes Izuku laugh. 'Oh my gosh he's so mature now', then he replies
“Let him, I have so many presents for all of you it’ll be fine”.
“Presents?” “Gifts, charms, protection, stuff like that”.
“Mm speaking of which, under the doormat will be perfect for your first sigil” Hisashi says like its normal.
“Sigil?” “It’s a written incantation, notifies me who’s at the door and their aura. From their aura I can tell if they're dangerous or not”.
'Oh dear'
