Chapter Text
Smaug the Terrible
Smaug roared in rage as he flew through the skies. He had been very careless, very careless, he knew. It had only been a second, a second was all it took to drive a spear close to his heart.
The dragon roared in pain before taking flight and unleashing a flare towards the village before flying away.
The dragon was full of anger, why wouldn't it be? He was Smaug, the most fearsome dragon in all of Middle-earth. He was one of the last great dragons the world had ever known.
His name inspired terror throughout the world, oh the cursed Dwarves had discovered him when he came to their mountain full of gold and killed all their people.
But still he had been tricked, first by that damned Hobbit and then by those damned Dwarves, using his greed and his gold to their advantage.
And they had almost succeeded.
His carelessness had almost cost him his life.
And so the mighty Smaug flew through the skies, flying away from the place with broken pride.
He flew for days, away from his would-be pursuers, at some point reaching the ocean, leaving behind what was known as Middle-earth.
He did not know how many days he flew or what drove him to leave Middle-earth and its riches behind, but Smaug was sure of one thing, he would return and avenge himself on all who had dared to defy him.
He did not know how many days he flew but eventually touched down. It was a new land, full of ice and snow, the temperature was much colder than anywhere the dragon had ever been.
For that alone he disliked the place.
His wings touched the ground before he caught his breath, that damned spear embedded in his chest kept causing him pain as he flew.
The worst part? He couldn't get it out because it was too small for him to get it out safely.
Still Smaug moved. He hunted several deer and wild animals for food.
He decided to explore the landscape, according to his senses there was no one for miles around.
Despite his wound Smaug forced himself to move. As he scanned the skies he sensed a change in the atmosphere, the air grew icier and colder, more deadly, the whole air brimming with dark magic, along with a smell of decay.
Where the hell did I end up?
Dark magic permeated the whole place, spreading everywhere.
Had the darkness returned and he hadn't noticed?
This darkness was no different than what his master had once used, it was similar, but this magic was darker and darker.
As if it were death itself.
It was all so confusing to Smaug.
He came to a lake, near some mountains of ice, where he drank his fill.
The dark presence permeated the whole place making the dragon nervous, it was not the darkness he was used to, it was almost as if the darkness was chasing him out of the place.
He took flight again across the mountains of ice. The ice mountains were left behind, now showing a slightly greener landscape.
Smaug landed in a clearing, examining the place with interest. The place had been inhabited by what seemed to be a group of humans, the whole village seemed uninhabited, a big fight had happened recently, the place was full of blood and several swords and axes were scattered all over the place.
But where were they and the bodies?
Suddenly his senses were activated, the very air of putrefaction filled his senses.
From among the trees several human-like figures appeared. Smaug's eyes narrowed as his whole body went on alert.
They looked like normal humans but they were not, only with his magic and his senses could he sense that the humans before them were not alive.
Several of their parts were decaying and the magic chained to their bodies gave it away.
The magic of a necromancer? Such seemed to be the case.
Suddenly out of the trees came several figures that looked like they were made of ice.
Smaug for a moment mistook them for the Elf race because of their appearance. Perhaps a race of ice elves?
Three of them appeared, their skin was extremely pale, almost like ice, their eyes were an unnatural blue, they carried swords and spears made of ice.
Yet what disturbed Smaug the most was the magic they carried, it was extremely dark and cold, almost like looking at death.
Smaug came to the conclusion that they were dangerous, very dangerous, but who were they?
Some experiment of their first master and creator of their race?
No, just by feeling the magic he could sense that he was much older than his master.
"Who are you?" Smaug's voice echoed throughout the place, before he violently wagged his tail.
More and more corpses gathered around Smaug. Smaug counted around 1,000 corpses.
The Ice creatures seemed puzzled that the dragon would speak, but still they spoke, in a language that Smaug never understood.
And Smaug lost his patience, "I do not know who you are and where you come from, but if you do not withdraw you will become fodder for my flames".
The ice creatures looked at each other before raising their weapons high and pointing them at the dragon.
Suddenly hundreds of undead rushed at it. Smaug blinked for a moment, did they really think they could beat him with an army of undead? thought the dragon in amusement before spitting his flames.
The dragon's flames burned most of the walking corpses. Its mighty wings fluttered before it gathered momentum and took flight.
He used his advantage to burn everything in his path, this time being more cautious, he didn't want another spear thrown at him. As if by fate a spear passed close to his head.
Smaug turned to see the Icemen aiming their magical weapons at him.
Smaug manoeuvred to avoid the next spear before launching a powerful flare.
The Ice creatures screamed before exploding into a thousand pieces, magical creature or not no one could withstand Smaug's flames.
Once he had levelled the ground and made sure there were no more corpses he flew from the scene.
The dragon flew south, away from the strange dark presence. It took hours to get away from the place.
He landed on the side of a mountain, his wings were tired and the embedded spear made it very difficult for him to move.
Smaug decided to take a nap before moving on.
He didn't know how long he was asleep but suddenly he felt a presence, it was a human, but he wasn't alone.
Sharpening his senses he could see what was hiding among the trees, the unknown man was not alone, the man was accompanied by an animal, an extremely large and magical wolf.
Smaug arched an eyebrow at the presence of his unwanted guest.
He raised his head and looked in his direction, the man was holding his breath behind a tree.
"I know you're there young man, come out so I can see you or I'll fry you and eat you" Smaug said to the hidden young man.
The man hesitated a few moments before leaving his hiding place accompanied by his wolf, a huge white wolf with red eyes.
Smaug took a closer look at the boy. The man was young, by human standards he would have been around 15 or 16 years old.
The young man had a sword on his waist and the skins he wore were all black. His hair was brown and his eyes were silvery gray.
He had several scars on his left eye.
As he examined it, something caught his eye.
It wasn't his appearance that caught the dragon's attention, no, it was the magic he had within him, in his blood.
The magic in his blood was familiar and distant, as if something was trying to bond with him.
The young man in front of him carried a powerful magic, very powerful, so powerful as to draw his attention and be able to bond with the wolf that was next to him.
That caught the attention of the dragon, who was the one in front of him?
"Who are you??" asked the Dragon.
The young man was speechless as he stuttered.
"You can talk?" stammered the young man.
Smaug looked at him amused. "Of course Human, all dragons of my class and power can speak."
The young man did not know what to say.
"So, will you tell me what your name is?"
"Yes, I'm sorry, I'm Jon Snow from House Stark" the young man introduced himself kindly.
Smaug arched an eyebrow. So he's a noble... House Stark? I've never heard of that house, where the hell am I?
"So Jon Snow" he said mockingly "What are you doing here? I'm sure you're looking for something, or maybe you've come to be my dinner" he said as he bared his teeth while giving her a cruel smile.
The young man's heart nearly stopped in fear as Smaug enjoyed the terror on his face.
Filling the hearts of the men of Terror was something he always enjoyed.
Jon collected himself as best he could before speaking.
"That's not what I have in mind, before I speak can I know your name?" he said meekly.
"Oh sure, where are my manners?" he said with false annoyance."I am the dragon Smaug, I have many names but they know me as, Smaug the Golden, Smaug the Impenetrable, Smaug the Terrible".
Jon blinked at the huge dragon's many pompous titles.
"These are pretty impressive titles," he said truthfully.
Smaug let out a laugh. "So, young man, will you tell me why you are here? Something tells me that for some reason you were here to find me."
Jon sighed "It's true, I had strange visions about you, about your arrival."
Now Smaug was confused and intrigued. "You say you saw me in a dream???".
Jon nodded "It's true, for days I've had strange dreams about your arrival, they became more and more visible, I didn't know if it was true or if they were visions of the Old Gods, but I took a chance and now I'm here."
The Man was shaking and nervous, but at no time did he lie. Smaug looked at the wolf holding his mate, the wolf bared its teeth at him before looking at Jon.
"Interesting," he murmured. "What did you hope to achieve with such a foolish action? Perhaps you have come to kill me and steal my treasures" he said in a dangerously low voice.
Jon gasped before shaking his head, "I wouldn't dare, no one is foolish enough to take on a dragon."
Well, at least he has common sense.
"I am here because I need your help, in return I will help you"
Smaug blinked before letting out a laugh "Silly boy, why do you think I would need your help?"
Jon flinched, but still spoke, "I know you're hurt. I know you're hurt because they tried to kill you with a spear, a spear that is embedded near your heart."
The dragon stopped laughing before looking at Jon "How do you know that???".
"I told you, I could see it in my visions, my dreams showed me that you were hurt and that you needed help."
Smaug was silent for a while looking at Jon before speaking.
"Let's say I accept your help. What do you want in return for my help?"
Jon took a deep breath before speaking. "I need your help to defend the kingdom of men, I need your help to defeat The Others and stop the Long Night."
"The Others? The Long Night??".
"Yes, nobody knows what The Others are, but we do know that they are people made of ice and that they are capable of resurrecting the dead" replied Jon.
The dragon gritted his teeth when he heard the description. "So they are those things" he said gritting his teeth in anger.
"Did you meet them, The Others??" Jon asked, concerned.
The Dragon nodded "Just a few hours ago they attacked me, I came to this land a few days ago, at first I didn't know who they were when suddenly three of those ice beings attacked me with their damned dead. Unfortunately they learned that they never had to provoke a dragon".
"Did you defeat them??" Jon said excitedly. The dragon nodded "Do you doubt my power??".
Jon shook his head quickly "No of course, I would never doubt your mighty power Smaug."
The answer seemed to calm the dragon "And never hesitate, Young Man. Now why don't you explain to me what The Long Night is all about?"
Jon nodded before he began to tell the story of The Long Night. For the next few hours Smaug listened intently to the story of The Long Night. A story of how thousands of years ago a great evil appeared in the world and with the darkness The Others appeared.
A race of beings dedicated to killing humans and raising the dead.
Once Jon finished the dragon he couldn't help but be confused. For a moment he thought that The Long Night his master and the progenitor of his race was involved, but he quickly put the thought out of his head.
His Master had never been to Westeros and had never created a race of Ice beings capable of resurrecting the dead.
But if he wasn't him, then who?
Jon also told him that he belongs to a group called the Night's Watch, a group that was created to defend the kingdom of men and that he joined his group because he was a bastard of the Stark house, one of the ruling houses of Westeros.
"It's an interesting story you've told me young Jon" Smaug said as he pondered.
"But still, why should I help you? It's not my problem if the Others come back to the world again and decide to wipe out all humans. Why should I help you?. It's more, what could you give me to get my help?". Smaug's eyes met Jon's. Jon took a deep breath before speaking.
"It's true that I can't give you much as I am now. I'm a member of the night's watch and I have a duty to fulfill, but I'm willing to give you whatever you want" Jon said with total sincerity.
"What do you want in exchange for your help??"
Smaug looked at him amused. "What are you willing to give me?"
"What does a dragon like you want???".
"Well, now that you ask, I want gold, a lot of gold, I also want castles, many castles, you see Jon, dragons like me are greedy, very greedy. So tell me, are you willing to give me tons of gold and jewels? Will you be able to Give me a castle, if I ask you for Men to sacrifice, would you be able to give it to me?".
Jon took a deep breath before speaking. "I cannot give you men that are not mine to sacrifice, my morals and my gods would never allow it. My family is not very rich, the Starks were never known as the richest house in the seven kingdoms, but still, there is a house They might have what you're looking for, they're called the Lannisters" Jon said his name with such an amount of hate that the dragon was surprised.
Lannister, obviously something was thrown at him in the past...
"They killed my family, my father and my brother, they killed all of them," he said, clenching his fists. "The Lannisters are the richest house of the seven kingdoms, they control most of the kingdom's mines, their own castle is located on a mountain full of gold" Smaug's eyes widened with emotion.
"Help me defend the Wall and the kingdom of men and in return you will keep everything that belongs to the Lannisters, everything, their castle, their gold and their lands, everything will be yours."
There was a heavy silence between the two. Smaug was impressed, very impressed with the young man in front of him.
The offer that he had proposed was very good, it was so good that he forgot how much he wanted to eat the young man.
"Impressive, very impressive young Jon, that is a very tempting offer you have made me" he said as he craned his neck and purred like a cat.
"But how would you be able to enforce that promise?"
“As I said before, I am a member of the Night's Watch, I cannot hold or inherit titles. But if you help defend the wall, the houses loyal to house Stark can help you defeat the Lannisters, a lot of people here in the North hate the Lannisters. After killing my father and brother there is no love between us, you could even defeat the Boltons and they would love and help you."
Smaug looked carefully at Jon. He knew that he wasn't lying and that he really was saying what he promised.
"Okay Jon, you've convinced me, I'll help you"
Jon let out a breath. "But keep this in mind, if you don't do your job I will destroy and kill everyone starting with you."
The dragon's voice was low and dangerous.
Jon swallowed before nodding. "I swear to the Old Gods" Jon said sincerely.
Smaug studied Jon for a few moments before nodding. "Very well Jon Snow, we have a deal, now take this arrow out of me, it bothers me a lot."
Jon nodded before climbing onto the dragon's wing. He quickly located the arrow embedded in his chest before proceeding to pull him out.
Smaug felt a slight jerk before seeing how the arrow was in Jon Snow's hands.
"Thank you Jon Snow, now let's go to your Castle"
