Chapter 1: The wrong place, the wrong time
Chapter Text
Laughter and music filled the air in the cozy bar called Grillby's. The cozy atmosphere was filled with much more excitement than usual for a Saturday night. Usually, you would be bothered by this, though you couldn't help the joy you felt in yourself. After all, tonight was special. Tonight marked the 5th anniversary of monsters surfacing. A small smile crept on your face as you watched an older monster couple dancing slowly in the crowd to the music.
The two tenderly held each other, and as you watched, you felt what they had together, the bond they shared. The elderly couple were soulmates. The moment the thought crossed your mind, you looked back down at the drink you were nursing, taking a long sip, letting the fizzy sweet beverage work its magic to wash away the sense of dread trying to wind in your gut.
Swirling the ice and bits of fruit in your glass with a straw, you continue to try and suppress the jealousy attempting to soil your good mood. However, this proved to be increasingly more difficult as you heard the bell to the door chime and friends happily greeting each other. "This is fine." you whisper to the melting ice. You knew this how it needed to be. For you, your safety... and everyone else. You don't have the luxury of feeling lonely. This right here right now is more than you could ever dream of. You were content with things as they are now. "You are content." you whisper to the tiny chunks of ice remaining in your now-empty glass.
You just needed to snap out of the spiral and think about all the great things you have now. Finally, you made it to Ebott City! 5 Years ago, this place was nothing but an unremarkable town only known as a good place to go camping in the woods surrounding the mountain. Now the epicenter of Monsters and Humans living peacefully together. And you had been lucky enough to get a cute little apartment on the city's outskirts. You smile to yourself, thinking about your new apartment; you can't wait to decorate it with little nicknacks here and there.
On top of that, you managed to get a steady clientele in the city. Working to pay for your apartment and rent while saving some extra. It will be a shame to inevitably leave it all behind...
-
Sighing, you rest your forehead against your palms. Annoyed that your brain keeps leading you down these dark thoughts. You debated with yourself whether to give up and go home or have a few more drinks when a second glass slid in front of you. Glancing up, expecting to have to politely decline someone's company, you are surprised to find 2 glowing red lights watching you. Meeting the monster's gaze sent a shiver down your spine. "heya, Doll, you looked like you could use another with that look on your face."
The skeleton monster before you said with a husky timber to his voice. You couldn't help but stare. You had never seen a monster quite like him. Normally monsters tend to take some organic animalistic traits. Not that it was a bad thing that he was a skeleton. It just made him somehow more magical than others you have observed, especially with the glowing dots of lights where his eyes would be. They flickered as he took in your appearance as much as you were him.
The fluffy hood on his comfy black bomber jacket with red accents and a gold zipper was one of the first things that caught your eye. He had sharp teeth that were relaxed in a grin, with a single gold tooth glinting in the moody gold lighting of the bar. Underneath, he had a crimson turtle neck and black shorts. Looking back up at his face, the skeleton rans a red translucent tongue over his gold tooth and grinned. "getting a good eye full, Sugar? the names red if ya care to know" You felt your cheeks flush at being caught staring. You gave him a quick apologetic smile and returned to your drink, feeling embarrassed. "so? can I get a name? ya know, as payment." he pointed a skeletal finger toward your drink and glanced expectantly up at you.
Oh. Oh, you've just been sitting here completely silent! You didn't want to be rude. However, you needed to quickly get rid of him. You really wanted to return to your night of blissful isolation. "Oh, uh, my name? It's uh-" With a loud crash, one of the other patrons knocked over a plate in his drunken haze. Somehow Red must have heard you because he nodded and leaned his skull against one hand. "Sorry I have not been around your kind much...thanks for the drink." You add quickly, turning to your drink, taking a long sip attempting to avoid eye contact. Hopefully, he would take the hint?
Red was perplexed. The human in front of him was giving off a strange aura. On top of that, he couldn't seem to see her stats. He kept staring at her chest, straining to concentrate on her soul. But, there was nothing. It wasn't like she had no soul. He could feel the rather strong, steady pulse of it without trying at all. But Red was a Judge. Every creature's stats should be open for him to read with no problem with the slightest bit of concentration. With this lady, though, there was nothing. Granted, he was pretty drunk and kept getting distracted by the curve and shape of her breasts.
The girl glanced at him and seemed to lean away as she noticed where he was staring. Heh, Red couldn't help but find the light blush she had across her cheeks and nose endearing. And yet, he couldn't shake the feeling of something being off about her. Her brown eye's flicked nervously back over to him. Studying the drink he got her, she straightened and knocked the whole thing back, emptying it quickly. Her gaze glided back over to him as she faced him.
"Well, Red" she said, his name so so sweetly. He couldn't help but lean in closer. He may get lucky tonight with minimal effort; that would be a new record. He thought smugly to himself. "I should be getting home before it gets too late." Red's smile grew, waiting expectantly for the invitation. "Thank you for the drink. It was nice meeting you." She said, standing up, grabbing her coat, and placing money on the counter before him. "Here, I owe you a drink" Red gaped at her, his desire shifting to disappointment. "Hey, doll, no need. Let me walk you home." He tried. "Oh no, I'm ok. I'll probably grab a cab. Have a good night and enjoy. Happy surface day." She deflected him easily, and with that, she was already walking out the door. Red's gaze followed her until the chime of the bell on the door snapped him out of the trance he was in when the door closed. "Heh, don't know why I thought it would be that easy." Red grumbled, laying his head down and waiving down a server for his usual.
Yet, while he drank heavily from the mustard bottle served to him, he could stop his mind from drifting back to the human girl. Red guessed it was because he couldn't read her stats. Yet... Something else was causing his mind to focus on her. He just didn't know what.
Stepping out into the cool night breeze, you searched the street up and down for a taxi. You could always wait for one, but it was such a lovely night. You may get to see the first snowflakes fall of the year. The forecast did say it was supposed to snow. Smiling at the possibility, you pulled your scarf up to cover your neck better and started walking down the road.
As the occasional car passed you, you couldn't stop your gaze from lingering on the tail light a bit too long. Two luminous red lights zoomed passed you and faded down the road. Calm down, girl; sure, he was handsome, but normally, you can easily push such thoughts away. Passing by a familiar alleyway, you stop. "It never hurts to check. Plus, I really need a distraction." You say, turning and walking down the cramped Alleyway.
It was still full of old boxes, crates, and some discarded broken furniture. You breathed a sigh of relief when you spotted the old pallet appearing to be unmoved. With your gloved hands, you pulled it away to reveal...
You froze, hands shaking slightly at the sight before you.
A small metal box was nestled in the corner. It had a control panel and some buttons on it, but other than that, it was just a metal box... Normally. No, No, this couldn't be happening. The control panel had been ripped out, and several wires were hanging out and seemed to be deliberately cut. Effectively disabling the small machine. How could someone know which wires to cut?! You backed away, your heart pounding in your chest, letting the pallet fall to the ground. As the loud sound of the wood crashing against the pavement echoed down the cramped space, you swore your heart stopped at the realization. The pallet... it... it had been placed EXACTLY where you left it. Fear and adrenaline burst into your body. You needed to go. This was a trap. You need to get out of here before-
Something hard and sharp pressed against the back of your neck. "Well, it seems that I have captured the Human Terrorist FILTH" You tried to turn your head to see who your captor was. But the object pressed even harder into your neck, breaking the skin. "Do not cast your sight on me, MURDERER" That sent another shock of fear down your system your entire body began to shake. You felt the trickle of your blood run down your neck, the metallic smell invading your nose. "I guess it's time to answer for my crimes then?" You whisper in a shaky voice.
"MUTT, stop this beast from addressing me this INSTANT! I do not wish to assault my hearing." Down the alley, you heard a rumbling voice answer, "of course, M'Lord" One second, you were facing the wall. The next, your body was encased in copper-colored magic, and you only had a second to understand you were being thrown against a wall before everything went dark.

Chapter Text
Waking up, you try to flex and stretch your body from its uncomfortable position. Only to feel pressure around your arms, wrists, and abdomen and a cloth gag around your mouth. Taking a deep breath through your nose, you attempted to calm yourself and prepare for the worst. Opening your eyes, you are first assaulted by a bright lightbulb dangling close to your face from a concrete ceiling. The last thing you could recall is being thrown against a wall by magic. Yet... you didn't feel injured or even sore. There was a click and spark of light in the corner of the room. Your panicked gaze lands on a tall figure. Leaning against the wall stood the second Skeleton of the night. He wore a loose fur-lined coat with the hood pulled over his skull. He also wore a cropped orange sweater and low-ridding black skinny jeans that showed off the top of his pelvic bone. You noted that he had 2 sharp elongated golden canine teeth and a purple collar hanging around his neck.
His half-lidded copper eyelights regarded you as he took a long drag from his odd-shaped cigarette letting thick purple smoke drift from his open jaw. Blowing the rest out, he stood up and strolled over to you. Watching him closely, you can't help but note his untied shoes as he stops before you. Crouching down to look at your face more closely, he took another puff of his cigarette. "you know..." his deep rumbling voice sent a tingle down your spine. "you are a rather odd human." his brow bone furrowed slightly. Reaching out his skeletal hand, adorned with silver rings to your mouth, he gently pulled your gag off. You moisten your dry lips and press them together. Opting to stay quiet till you understand the situation you are in better.
You heard muffled yelling through a door at the end of the room. You stare at it for a few seconds, gauging whether it is coming closer. Thankfully, the voices seemed to stay where they were. "so why did ya confess so quickly?" Your soul skipped a beat as you stared at the Skeleton in surprise. He probably was there when you were taken earlier. At first, you said nothing, then a half-hearted laugh escaped you. "Heh... I can only live so long with blood on my hands before I am put to justice... Why not make it quick and easy?" His eye sockets narrowed at you, and he tilted his head slightly. "...blood?"
With a loud bang, the door burst open and slammed against the wall. "MUTT! I specifically told you to watch the captive. not speak to it!" Before you stood a short skeleton with deep violet eye lights that promised violence if you made one wrong move. He wore a Guard like uniform with meddles pinned to the front. The uniform was completely black, with the exception of fine silver embroidery detailing. To complete the look, he wore a purple scarf that matched to glow of his eye lights around his neck. The Skeleton on the floor (Mutt?) stood and retreated to the corner where he came from. Never once did he let his eye lights break contact with you.
Polished black knee-high boots clicked on the tile floor as he approached you. "So little Murderer" He spat the last part with extra malice as he folded his hands behind his back and glared down at you. Reminding you of how a military commander may stare down a battlefield. "I took it upon myself as Captain of the royal guard to search your residence. Look what I found" To your horror, Blueprints were thrown on the floor before you. Your eye's widened in recognition. This was about the Machines?! "This is a big misunderstanding! Whatever you think I was doing with those, you got it all wrong" Your heart raced in your chest. They got it all wrong. They probably thought you were behind all the dusting that had happened lately. How could you be this stupid? The Royal Guard has been on high alert since the dusting of Monsters in the city started happening. Someone must have found one of your machines and figured out what they were for. But you never hurt any of the monsters! Those machines were not meant to be used on Monsters but on yourself.
"Beg all you want, you repulsive piece of filth. Really ill only enjoy this more" The Captain laughed and pulled out a Book flipped to a page, then looked up at you with a pleased smirk. "As Captain Of The Royal Guard, I, Black Gaster, have the pleasure to with this sentence you too-"
"wait" Black turned on his heels and stomped his right foot. "SANS! You better have a good reason for interrupting-" The Skeleton took a step out of the dark, a smile fixated on his skull. "get out." he said. Black's face flushed a deep purple in anger. "How dare you speak to me like that. You Lazy Good For NOTHING! I am in the middle of sentencing this terrorist-" The new Skeleton slowly fixed his gaze on Black. "i said, G E T O U T." Despite the fury in his violet eyeligts, Black paused and took a step back. They stared at each other for a long, tense second, Before Black Huffed and stormed over to Mutt. In a poof of copper smoke and a barely audible pop, they vanished into thin air.
Sans walked over to the door and shut it. He leaned his skull on the door momentarily, taking a breath. He could hear the kid's soul hammer wildly in her chest. She was scared... maybe she should be. He was honestly proud of himself for remaining so calm in this situation. He normally would have let Black do his job and handle this situation. However, this was a delicate circumstance. Sans summoned one of the disabled machines into his hand and stepped closer to the kid. "do you.." he let the lights in his eyes disappear. "have any idea what these could do to a lower monster?" She looked up at him teary-eyed and nodded once, confirming his suspicions. A new wave of anger washed over him. She knew?! His grip on control lessened in his fury, yet he kept his smile plastered on. "But you don't understand those are not for Monsters! There for me!" she pleaded. Sans blinked... she was not lying. "did you kill those monsters?" he asked. "N-no" she stammered. That... was also not a lie. Why on earth would she have these? Is she selling them to the anti-monsters? Is she creating weapons for them? Sans's thoughts started racing with all the possibilities, yet they were halted by 4 simple words.
"Are there any left...?"
Sans's smile became real and wicked. So he summoned them all into the room. Every broken and disabled machine, just for a true monster like her. "we got every last one." He said, staring at her with his empty sockets. Her eyes scanned the room in horror, then landed back on him. She seemed to realize something, and her soul cried out. "T-there has to be at least 1!" she screamed, the loudest he had yet to hear her be. He felt his soul give a painful clench at the sound. He ignored it and continued to watch her with his empty sockets.
"You... you need to leave." she started shaking. Sans could sense something... coming from her. Was that.. no... it couldn't... "Sans, just please I don't want to hurt you. I can't always control it! Just leave for an hour and come back later! We will finish this. I promise I will do my best to answer your questions! But you NEED to leave now!" No, no. That was 100% mass amounts of raw magic surging in the kid's soul. Sans stood there petrified. How is that possible? With a pop, Mutt reappeared in the room. One by one, the other judges started appearing, too, most likely investigating the surge in magic. "No, No You all need to leave!!!" The kid screamed, utter panic in her eyes. Red, who had just appeared, stepped closer to her. "Doll?" The chair the kid was on crumpled into splinters, as well as the rope restraining her. Green and purple sparks of raw magic whipped and whirled wildly around her, causing Red to stumble back in shock. The kid curled into herself, clutching at her chest and shutting her eyes tight. Gave one final scream before a blinding light engulfed the room.
Stretch slowly blinked open his eyes. With a groan, he sat up and came face to face with one of his gaster blasters. Its orange eyelights, identical to his own, staring at him curiously. He sighed and gave it a few pats on the head before sending it back home to the void. Glancing around the room, he saw almost all the Judges passed out in various positions on the floor, their own respective Gaster blasters floating over them. Various bits of debris hover in place all over the room, encased in a rainbow of colored magic. He sucked in a sharp breath. This could have been much worse if any of the blasters had gone off. As Stretch slowly got up, he stilled as he spotted Sans... No Dust cradling the human in his arms. Dust held her like she was the most valuable thing in the world, chuckling darkly.
Stretch stood to his full height; Dust's eyelight shot to him mere pinpricks letting out a deep feral growl. He huddled the girl closer to him protectively. Stretch held up both his hands in surrender " Woah, relax, dude, it's just me" Dust watched his every move as Stretch reached into his hoodie, grabbed a cigarette, and lit it. "Watcha doin with the girl, Dusty?" he asked as nonchalantly as he could muster. Dust's red and blue gaze flickered back down to the human. "i found her." he said quietly. Stretche's gaze narrowed at the other Skeleton. "Whatcha mean, bud?"
Dust chuckled a few more times before speaking. "i've been looking for her, you know? Heh, everywhere for 5 years... and I find her here... Isn't that funny?" Stretch had a sinking feeling growing in his chest. "you know I had 1 pacifist timeline. the little demon randomly stopped killing, and we all had 1 good timeline. we made it to the surface... 7 years... I met her there. i couldn't believe it. i was on the surface, and i had found my soulmate..." Stretch felt his soul skip a beat. Dropping his cigarette to the floor. Dust continued, "we were supposed to have a kid together... She was breathtaking, and Pap was so excited to meet the baby..." Dust took a long breath in, then let out another chuckle. "then I woke up... you know? i woke up once again down in the Underground. and to top it off, that little demon killed only Paps that time... When it got to the surface, it sent what was left of my sweet angel back down to me. isn't that so considerate?" Dust's grin fell as he looked back down at the girl, watching he huff softly in her sleep. Stretch was frozen on the spot contemplating the meaning of what Dust told him and what that could mean for the rest of them. He watched as Dust glanced up and seemed to be listening to something before Dust spoke again. "heh yeah, you're right, bro" Dust turned back to Stretch and placed the girl in his arms. "i can't take her... i'm not the same Monster I was before... she could never love someone like me again..." Dust gently brushed the hair out of the Humans face. "i should get going... don't want my angel to wake up and see me like this. you guys take care of her for me, ok? see ya around" With a wink, Dust disappeared. Leaving Stretch with perhaps the most dangerous being in the world, softly sleeping in his arms. If his jaw could hit the ground from utter shock, it would be rolling out the door.

Chapter Text
Once again, you wake up in an unfamiliar place. "so..." You notice Sans sitting in a chair next to the bed you were lying on. He looked nervous and fidgeted around with one of the strings of his blue hoodie. Finally, his eye lights met yours as you sat up. "this is how this is going to go, kid" Scanning the room, you noted that the two of you were alone. "i am going to ask you questions, and you are going to answer them got it?" Oh, this is not going to go well. You felt a sinking feeling in your chest. Despite this, you couldn't help but be dazzled by how his eye lights shone with magic. You quickly shook your head to stop that train of thought. Given your situation, you couldn't understand why your brain kept putting such thoughts in your head.
Sans's sockets narrowed at the shake of your head. "Oh uh, I mean yeah, I will answer as much as possible..." You looked around the room again; it appeared to be a normal-looking bedroom. "Um... Where exactly am I?" Sans seemed to relax at the simple question. "somewhere safe where we can keep an eye on you." he let his arms rest on his legs "now..." He leaned forward, his smile growing strained. "care to tell me how exactly you got magic?" This is already starting off poorly. "It's mine" He actually laughed? "heh, that's hilarious, kid, but last time i checked, humans can't have magic unless they take a boss monsters soul" his eye sockets turned to voids. "so, kid... where didya get the soul?" you huffed in annoyance "Like I said the magic is mine. I didn't take anyone's soul."
He angrily stood up, causing his chair to fall back with a thud. "fine. That must mean you are not human if that's how it is. Human laws do not apply to you." Suddenly you were engulfed in a blue-tinted aura and were tugged by your soul till you were inches from his face. "you are to stay in this room till you are ready to explain everything to me. we will be monitoring you and stars... if you make one move that puts the people i care about in danger... bud Y O U A R E G O I N G T O H A V E A B A D T I M E" with that, he dropped you to the floor and vanished.
Well... That could have gone better.
It was hard to shake off the past Day's incidents. First getting kidnaped, then having your magic overflow like that... and Sans... You could understand their fear, but it didn't make the situation they put you in any better. Understanding why people do certain things has always been easy for you. You just had to imagine yourself in their shoes. They find hazardous machines that could kill their people all over the city. It doesn't help that many monsters have been found dusted, and they have not found the culprit. Not to mention the rumors, apparently an Anti-Monster group was planning another terrorist attack sometime soon. The last one was when Monster kind gained the same rights as Humans. One hundred fifty-six souls were lost that Day... Next, they find a 'human' with magic. And to top everything off, their magic goes wild and overloads all of them with it. If you thought about it, you really could understand their fears. Even so, being on the receiving end of those fears is not an ideal situation. Plus, being stuck in this room for a week straight is not something you would consider "fun."
The room was like a standard hotel room. Well, except there was literally no exit. Yes, there was a door that, however, led to a bathroom. Otherwise, there was no entrance or exit. You guessed the skeletons had teleportation magic with how you had witnessed them blip in and out of existence on a few occasions. The memory of those seven skeletons appearing in the room when your magic had surged resurfaced in your mind. They most likely had this exitless room made as a prison of sorts, A space where only a monster with teleportation magic could enter at will, yet no one else could exit.
On the plus side was a nice bathtub in the connected bathroom. Your apartment only had a shower, which is unsurprising with the rent you paid. Since being in the outside world, you had never imagined that bathtubs would be high on your top priority list. When you discovered that they existed, you were blown away. The fact that you could sink into a tub like a warm embrace always helped you truly relax and let your mind go blank. If taking a bath was a coping mechanism, then that was yours. And yet... there are only so many soaks in the tub you can take before the isolation truly sets in. Only so long can you push away the familiar emptiness and the dark thoughts that come with it. There reaches a point where you can't keep pretending that you are on vacation and taking time for yourself. At some end, you are just curled up in an empty bathtub, lost in the undeniable emptiness of your soul and the increasingly hard-to-deny pull toward something or someone you can't reach yet your soul demands.
The familiar click of a plate placed down for one of your meals didn't motivate you to move from your spot. In the beginning, you attempted to catch whoever was bringing you meals. To your frustration, you couldn't catch them. Every time a meal came, it was always in a spot you happened not to be looking. The game lost its charm quickly.
You just let out a sigh and turned into a more comfortable position. On one of the blurry days... weeks? You found your belongings from your apartment left around the room in boxes. That gave you something to focus on for a bit. The distractions were good. You knew you couldn't keep falling into that state of staring at nothing. You couldn't risk falling back into those old memories. You had music and movies to watch on your laptop. You laughed, thinking they were probably monitoring your online activity to see if you would contact someone, maybe even the Anti-Monster group they thought you were a part of. But of course, there was nobody for you to ask for help. You had nobody. Nobody would come.
You awoke one Day... Night? With a pang in your chest. Instantly you grimaced, knowing what you had to do. There were no machines to help you anymore.
Red was pretty pissed. He had somehow been stuck with watch duty over the girl. Except for Classic, everyone else had flaked out. G had been uninterested when he heard the news of a human with magic being found. He chose to stay wherever he was. No surprise there. The ashtray had outright refused and had been oddly uptight whenever the topic came up, always finding excuses to exit the conversation. Red still could not fathom what that was about. And the little tyrant had forbidden Mutt to be involved in any way. Though Red had caught him snooping around on the cameras in the girl's room multiple times. However, had always fucked off when Red asked him to take over. So he was stuck taking turns with Classic.
He had been a little excited to do it the first few days. Truthfully, he had hoped to catch the girl naked on cam. If he was being honest with himself, she was one of the most breathtaking creatures he had ever seen. The girl had found a spot in his every waking moment since he saw her at the bar. But Red would never admit that to anyone, not even himself. However, she spent most of her time watching movies and taking impossibly long baths. To make things even more boring, Classic left a note informing her of where the cameras could see in the room, reassuring her that there were none in the bathroom. He also explained that she could ask for him by writing on the notepad when she was ready to talk. So he never had the chance to catch her in anything but oversized shirts and yoga pants.
It had been another boring night. The girl was fast asleep, and Red couldn't understand why they had to be on watch while she slept. It had been one of those days where everything had only managed to piss him off for no reason, and he just needed a break. With one last glance at the monitors and live video footage, he teleported to Grilby's. He was only going to be gone for a few hours. He couldn't have known. She had been asleep! The magic readings were low to none existent! He couldn't have known, and it was not his fault!
Red had returned some hours later, slightly blazed and very drunk. He slumped in the chair in front of the desk with a curse. He glanced at the monitors. Everything seemed fine. See no harm in leaving for a bit of fun. He grinned to himself and relaxed. Looking at the Live footage, he noticed the girl was no longer in bed, but the light in the bathroom was on. She was probably taking another one of her baths. Red smiled, readying to take a long nap when his gaze snagged on something at the bottom of the bathroom Door. He shot out of his seat, suddenly sobered up, and teleported.
Red slammed open the bathroom door and froze. "sweetheart?". He fell to his knees and gently cupped your face. You knew there was probably blood and magic everywhere. His twinkling eye lights were nothing but bottomless voids as his gaze shot down to the piece of glass clutched in your bloody hand. He didn't even glance at the shattered mirror as he flung it out of your hand and cradled you gently in his arms as if you might shatter.
Funny enough, your soul felt it might shatter at the broken look on his face. You wanted to reassure him that you were fine but couldn't muster the energy to speak. So you did the only thing you could as he teleported and rushed you into an unfamiliar room. You gently raised your hand coated in blood and magic and rested it on his cheek. He was yelling at someone, but when he felt your cold fingers graze his cheek, he silenced and scanned your face. You smiled at him, and finally, those crimson lights returned to his gaze. With a content sigh, you let sleep embrace you.

Chapter 4: The verdict
Summary:
A decision is made
Chapter Text
When you open your eyes, you are first blinded. Then once you adjust to the lighting... your heart starts to race at the sight of bright fluorescent lights. You quickly sit up and see an IV drip in your arm. With unsteady hands, you quickly pull it out. Frantically you try to get out of the bed you were in, causing you to stumble and hit the gray linoleum floor face-first. Gray... gray, it's everywhere. You jump up on unsteady legs, searching for an exit. There was medical equipment everywhere. There are no windows! You realize. There's too much gray! Your back hits a table, and medical tools crash to the ground with a metallic clatter. Just white and gray everywhere. All you can see is white and gray. A loud alarm goes off when you rip more sensors off your body. You knew what that meant. Instantly your body hits the ground as you pull your knees up to your chest, shutting your eye's tightly, desperately trying to escape the gray.
The familiar sensation of hands grabbing you.
(That's normal. Just stay still)
Being picked up.
(Don't move)
People are shouting.
(Ignore it)
Someone is shaking you.
(Nod your head)
More shouting.
(Bite your tongue)
The hands leave you as they set you down.
(The shouting stops...)
Someone is speaking.
(Nod your head)
You smell... Lavender?
(No, no, that's not right)
You feel something soft.
You feel something warm.
Your hand is squeezing something hard.
"Come now, dearest? Open your eyes for me?"
You slowly open your teary eyes.
"Tell me three things you see." the calming and soothing voice tells you.
"...I ...I see a blanket. And... A skeleton"
There was a low chuckle from the Skeleton. "Good. One more"
Everything around you was so much clearer as the memory faded. You let your gaze slowly travel up the Skeleton's frame till you rested on his face.
"I see you."
A light green hew spread across the new Skeleton's skull, from one high cheekbone to the other. Was that a blush? "W-well, there you are" He smiled at you, his green eyelights scanning your face. "My name is Green. I am terribly sorry we had to meet this way. I want you to be assured that I was only trying to help you. I did not know that such spaces were triggering for you, Dearest." You tried to squeeze your hand into a fist but noticed you were holding something. Looking down at your lap, your hand had his in a tight grip. You relaxed your hand for his comfort but couldn't quite bring yourself to let go. His touch was grounding you at the moment.
You let out a shaky sigh and said, "It's ok... you were only trying to help... I guess I gave you guys a scare..." Your hand reached up to trace over the center of your chest, feeling for a wound you knew was no longer there. His green gaze followed your every move in a calculated manner. "Yes, but it appears you knew what you were doing since you heald right after?"
A smile spread across your face at the thought of catching the skeletons off guard for once. Not that you liked potentially causing someone a traumatic memory. However, you still felt a sense of victory to have control over something.
"My magic overflows sometimes..." You say finally with a more steady voice. "That's what those machines were for." You glanced back up at Green to see the shocked expression on his face. His eyelights had vanished from his sockets, and his mouth twisted grimly. Now that you could fully focus again, you noticed he had a thin fissure running from both. One ran from his right eye socket to the back of his head, and one ran down to his mouth from his other. You figured this might be the only chance you get for an explanation, so you continued. "When my magic starts to overflow, I only have a few minutes at best to drain it. Otherwise, it will unpredictably explode from my soul. So I was using the extractors to drain my soul from the magic. It happens randomly, so I place them all over the city for emergencies. Whenever I felt it coming, I could just quickly drain it before it could hurt anybody." taking another breath to calm yourself, you continued. "And since you guys destroyed all of them... I had to let it out physically."
There was a long stretch of silence before Green finally spoke. His eyes lights appeared, and he gently took your other hand. He kneeled down before you. "I... I am so terribly sorry this has happened to you, Dearest." He lowered his head. "None of this should have happened to you they... My Cousins took this all too far. I can understand that this was out of fear, but this was a horrendous act upon you." His glowing green gaze settled on your face once more. He had a look of resolve on his face. "I will talk to Sans. I couldn't help you medically since you healed yourself pretty quickly. But I will help you. We have to be able to have a better option for you. None of this was your fault."
You stared at the Skeleton in disbelief. Was someone actually going to help you? "Now," Green's voice became a bit louder, "You need to rest. You are still my patient and desperately need Food and Sleep." He stood, towering over you from your spot on the floor. Green leaned down and offered his hand, helping you off the floor. He was still much taller than you. "For the time being, you can use my room. I shall fetch you something to eat, then talk to Sans."
He smiled down at you, noticing your expression; his smile seemed to drop. "oh ehem... My apologies." He gently took your hand and led you to a door from what you realize now was an office into his bedroom. The first thing that caught your eye where the plants. Floor-to-ceiling, most of the space was taken by lush green plants that were potted on shelves or hanging from pots around the ceiling. There was a large alcove with a big open window letting in a cool breeze, plush cream-colored pillows, a comfy-looking throw blanket, and a cushioned platform. You let go of his hand and wander over to the window running your fingertips across the pillows. Turning, you see a simple queen-sized bed with a metal bedframe leaning against a dark green accent wall.
Turning to Green, you say, "Living up to your name, huh?" Your point was proven further by the light green blush covering his skull once more.
"Ah yes, I do enjoy caring for plants. Though I tend to be far too busy to help with our garden, thankfully, Papyrus and Blue have that covered." You took note of the unfamiliar names but decided to file that away for later.
You were momentarily startled by a floating skeletal hand zipping past you to grab a white lab coat from a chair, then floated back to Green. "Oh yes, I apologize again, Dearest. I tend to use my magic without thinking at times. Maybe if you have a chance to examine it, they won't catch you off guard again." A second hand appears before you, waiting patiently. You were not necessarily afraid or anything. You just never really had the experience of seeing physical versions of magic. Your magic had no physical manifestation, but you supposed that such things were unique to Monster kind. Tenderly you reached out your own hand to examine the skeletal once. First, gently pocking it with your fingertip. When nothing happened, you couldn't help but feel a slight excitement at the opportunity to see magic other than your own. You placed your hand on the skeletal one and felt a light tingling sensation, almost like a static on your skin that touched it. Your other hand started tracing the fingertips of the hand, feeling the hard yet slightly mailable texture of the bone surprised you. What also surprised you was the perfectly round circle missing from the center of the palm. But you supposed that Monster skeleton anatomy is just different from humans.
Gently pulling your hands away, you felt your soul squeeze bitterly. You glanced back up at Green, still feeling the effects on your body from the episode. It always left you so drained. "Thank you, Green. I know the circumstances are not the best... but you have shown me more kindness today than I have received in a... very long time" Green stiffened slightly at your words. "Nonsens Dearest." He replied, "This... is the least I could do..." Green pulled on his lab coat and straightened it till it sat perfectly. "I should be going now but feel free to use my bed or anything else in here or the next room. I will lock the door to my clinic... so we don't have another unfortunate incident... But I do ask you not to leave out the door in my office. I need a chance to speak with the others about everything. I want to avoid any more misunderstandings..." He trailed off, staring at you with his green eye lights. "Get some rest, Dearest" With those parting words, he left his room, closing the door quietly behind him.
Sans took a deep breath before entering the crowded living room. He let his usual lazy smile slide across his skull, masking the unease in his soul. He sat down in his typical recliner, already feeling a headache coming on at the arguing that was already happening between the other skeletons gathered in the living room. Papyrus was giving Red an ear full for showing up clearly drunk. The little Tyrant was shouting way too loudly for 11 in the morning at Mutt and Stretch, taking turns at each of them for whatever they did. Sans noticed that Blue was once again missing from a meeting. Most likely because Stretch "conveniently" forgot to tell him. The only one missing other than Blue was Green. Though Sans guessed that he was too busy healing the girl. Sans felt a twinge of pain, remembering how Red appeared in the living room, covered in blood and magic, shouting for Green. Then the other incident this morning in Greens home clinic. Sans told himself the twinge of pain in his soul was for his fellow monsters, not the girl.
"so." Sans said, and the room fell silent. "you all know why i called this meeting. we need to all decide on what to do with the girl" Unsurprisingly, the Tyrant spoke up first, "I say we rid ourselves of this burden. I see no point in further questioning. She clearly is not connected to the Anti-Monster group. However, she still has been building illegal weapons. We have all seen the reports. An attack is coming, and we have no proof that that girl is not the mastermind. For public safety, it is my job to sentence and have her executed " "BLACK WE ARE NOT KILLING ANYONE!" Papyrus exclaimed. "well there's one suggestion. you guys know how this works, we need someone to second it for it to be valid," Sans replied, earning him a horrified look from Papyrus which he pointedly ignored. Sans needed to stay impartial. "...i second it." Mutt said with his eyes closed. Also no surprise there, Mutt always just went with whatever his brother said. "so we have one suggestion. anyone got anything else?" From the sofa, Red stirred and grunted. "i got an idea." he chuckled and watched Sans "we should just leave the girl alone. put her back where we got her. what's a little thing like her going to do? she's harmless, and we have all been assholes" Once again, the room was silent. Normally Red has quick to violence. This was out of character for him.
"I agree with Red" Sans turned to see Green standing at the door. "The Girl has, as everyone knows, done nothing wrong besides building those machines, which we know she clearly needs after demonstrating her uncontrolled magic twice now. However, I understand that we know nothing about why a human has magic, so we can't just let her go. So let me propose this let the girl live here with us. Giver her one of the cottages on the property, her own space, but somewhere we can still keep an eye on her." Papyrus jumped up from his seat. "YES, LET'S DO THAT! WE CAN BEFRIEND HER, AND MAYBE WHEN THE HUMAN IS COMFORTABLE, SHE WILL TELL US EVERYTHING ABOUT HER MAGIC! DOESN'T THAT SOUND GOOD, SANS?" Papyrus gave Sans a pointed look, and Sans didn't have it in him to disagree with his brother. "i agree with them..." Stretch said. He had been oddly silent during the entire conversation. Sans decided to worry about that later. "fine let's put it to a vote. either we execute the girl, or she stays."
Flopping on his bed unceremoniously, Sans couldn't help but wish he could run a few tests on the girl to get the answers he wanted. He was angry that she couldn't stay put in that room until he figured everything out. Sans rolled over on his side and shut his eye sockets. Nothing a little sleep couldn't fix, right?

Chapter Text
When you awoke in Green’s room, to the sun warming your face, you knew. You always knew if you awoke to the sun, it was going to be a good day. Stretching and giving one over-dramatic yawn you took a moment to remember where you were. For a moment as you searched around the room, you could almost smell something baking in the oven downstairs and the soft music drifting from the radio… Bitterly you shook yourself from the pleasant memories. You were not there anymore. Now is not the time to get lost in memory lane. You reminded yourself that you were indeed kidnapped, and in hostile territory. But as you looked out the window at the neatly cut grass and the forest beyond the backyard, you couldn’t stop the feeling of today being a good day.
A knock on your door had you springing out of the bed, halfway getting tangled in the sheets and almost stumbling onto the floor. You quickly fixed your clothes and tried to comb through your hair with your fingers quickly, as you walked across the hardwood floors. Upon opening the door you were pleased, if not a bit relieved to find Green standing on the other side of the door. “Good morning Dearest, I thought that it might be good to bring you breakfast?” He smiled down at you gently indicating a tray held by 2 of his magic hands. A plate of steaming waffles topped with berries and cream sat neatly on the tray. Next to it was another smaller plate of bacon and eggs. “Oh!” You tried to hold in your excitement and calmed yourself down before answering “That looks delicious. Could you just give me a moment to change and put my hair up?” You noticed as you spoke the ever so slight green tinge creeping across his face. Yet his expression did not change. He nodded his head, taking a step back, allowing you to close the door.
Turning around and leaning against the closed door you had to quickly remind yourself of the situation you were in. Skeletons are not cute when they are your kidnappers. Yet, when you glanced in the mirror you couldn’t help the embarrassed flush creep on your face. You looked like you just rolled out of bed, which yes… you did but with your hair all messy and the clothes you slept in all wrinkled not to mention the imprints from the pillow left on your cheek, who wouldn’t be embarrassed? …No ….No You needed to stop this. You hurried to the bathroom to splash ice-cold water on your face, cooling your pink cheeks. Glaring one last time at your reflection in shame, you quickly got changed into a new set of clothes. Why were you like this around these strange monsters, you didn’t know them or anything about them. Not to forget that they literally kidnapped you and kept you in a isolated room for stars… how long? Why did your heart skip a beat when you were around them?
Just as you were about to open the door to meet Green, you stopped. A theory had popped up in your head. You slowly lay a hand on the center of your chest. …Could it be… your soul? Were all these weird feelings you have been experiencing lately towards the skeletons just instinct? Is your soul happy to be around other magical souls? Was it because of what you are? But you had already been in close proximity to other monsters, none of these feelings were there for others. Normally it was just a comforting feeling around monsters. But with the skeletons you… warmth crept into your cheeks once more.
Choosing the grumbling of your belly over potentially complicated thoughts, you head into Green's study. “Yes, brother I have everything under control!” The normally calm skeleton was pacing angrily back and forth across the carpet, a phone pressed against the side of his skull with a floating hand while his sleeved arms waved about as he talked. “G I still could use some support… I know… yes I know you are busy… I… I’m sorry brother. I just miss you…” He stopped his pacing “Ok brother goodbye. I lo-.” Green started down at his phone and sighed “I love you” He whispered quietly, letting himself slump to the couch. Your heart gave a painful squeeze at the desperation on his face. Green’s normally bright green eye lights were dimmed and seemed to be getting darker by the second. Stop. Get a grip. Isn’t sympathy for your captors a symptom for Stockholm syndrome?
“Sorry for the wait” you announce and crossed over to sit on the sofa. Green's gaze brightened slightly “Welcome back Dearest, coffee?” He was so thoughtful… Stop “Yes that would be great, thank you” you took the steaming cup of coffee and processed to pour an ungodly amount of cream in, followed by the tiniest spoon of sugar. You bit the inside of your cheek to ground yourself. Green's face crinkled up in amusement at your coffee-flavored milk, yet he kept his thoughts about it to himself. “Feel free to eat as much as you like” he indicated a tray of food. “As for me, I regret to inform you that I am needed at the hospital shortly” you drop your fork onto your plate and stare up at him stunned.
Green was going to leave you? But... he was the only one that seemed to be on your side. What was going to happen if he left? "Dearest... I hope you know that I wouldn't leave you if it was not urgent... But... My Patients come first. No matter what. I cannot with good conscience stay here with you, knowing that I am putting them at risk. I do not have that liberty." Green stood and kneeled in front of you, taking your hands in his. "Listen dearest, I spoke with the others, regarding you. Sadly we cannot let you leave with a magic we know nothing about. Or what that means for monsters. We are, however, going to give you your own space. Please do not try any foolish escape attempt. I can't protect you if you make suspicious moves, my cousins would not understand that it's out of fear..."At the panic expression on your face, Green paused and seemed to contemplate something. "Give me a second I'll be right back... don't worry ill be back" Green added that last part probably because of the look of despair that crept into your eyes. True to his word he vanished into thin air, then after a few minutes returned. Green knelt back down to you and held out his hand. "You can text me whenever you want ok? I probably won't answer right away at times... but if you need help... it will come." You tentatively took your phone from him. It was one of the few items that had not been returned to you in 'The Room'. Green gave you a gentle smile before standing. "I really must be going. Dearest?" You looked from your phone back up to his tall frame. "Do not hesitate to ask me for anything understood?" You nodded. "Good." He stepped toward the door "My cousin will be here shortly to show you too your new accommodations." Another skeleton?! You could already feel the anxiety build in your chest. "Dearest?" You caught his green gaze once again "Please have a lovely day" staring at the empty space where Green once stood you couldn’t deny the warm feeling in your chest. Maybe not all of them were bad? After all it mostly was Sans and that other skeleton that took you. What was his name? Black? Or Mutt? One of those. You didn’t really know what the others were like. But from the warm feeling in your chest. You knew that you liked Green.
After finishing what you could honestly say was the best breakfast ever, you wandered around the office a bit. looking at all the books. Not all of them were medical books, which surprised you. There was a lot of fantasy, as well as gardening books. Each was separated into sections and placed in alphabetical order. You pulled out one of the fantasy books that just kinda looked pretty. It had gold swirling engraving on it, with a white Dear depicted in the center. A knock on the door made you drop your book. Instantly guilty, you quickly picked the book up and put it back in its place. Another impatient knock pounded at the door. You turned to look at it, unsure if someone was just looking for Green or if it was the cousin that was supposed to pick you up. There was another loud knock that sounded more like someone banging on the door. "GOD DAMNIT DOLL I CAN HEAR YA IN THERE OPEN THIS DAMN DOOR!"
Annoyed, you ripped open the door to find Red on the other side. Red's clenched hand was still raised as if he was about to pound on the door again. "Fine, I'm here. What do you want?" The skeleton seemed to shrink into his fur-lined hood at your tone. He took a deep breath and pulled his hood over his skull. "i... i... dinnt mean to shout '' His red eye lights shined brightly at you from under his hood. "i just lose my temper easily..." You took a breath yourself and calmed your nerves a bit. At least you knew this one, Red was the first skeleton you met after all. Compared to Sans you felt at least a little more secure about this one. At worst he was a flirt, and that's the best you could really ask for.
You sighed "Hey, sorry for snapping as well, just been a stressful last couple of days you know?" You laugh bitterly. Red seemed uncomfortable by that comment. "Anyway, you are here to take me to my 'accommodations' right?" you gave air quotes at accommodations. Red seemed to take in your body language for a few more seconds before he relaxed his shoulders. A grin spread across his skull before he held out his skeletal hand out to you. “yeah, that’s right Doll” You rolled your eyes at the nickname before reaching out to take his hand. However, Red quickly grabbed your waist and pulled you against himself. “i know a short cut”

Chapter Text
Getting teleported was an interesting experience. You first felt like an overwhelming sense of gravity was crushing you against Red. Yet, somehow tearing you away from him and sucking all the air from your lungs. Then you felt like you were falling, in what direction you couldn’t tell. Your nails dug into Red’s jacket till you had a firm hold on 2 of his ribs. Then in a moment, it was all gone. You felt weightless. All was quiet. Everything was so still and weightless that you were scared to breathe. Hesitantly you opened your eyes; Crimson gazed back at you. You noticed hair obscuring your vision and tried to swish it to the side with your shoulder, but it just floated lazily around. Your eyes widened as they took in the emptiness around you. There were no floors or walls or even a roof over you as far as you could see. You couldn’t tell if you were inside or outside.
You and Red just floated in a space seemingly with no gravity. Your clothing floated around you to prove that point further. You were in a place that seemed to lack light, yet somehow you could see perfectly fine. Around you was nothing but Black, a kind of Black that lacked any color. Normally, when a person looks at black clothing or paint, you can still see hints of other colors in it. But this was… empty? It’s the only word you could think of. Turning back to Red, you opened your mouth to say something but quickly shut it when he pressed a single skeletal finger against your lips. His expression was unreadable as he watched you, then a large grin spread across his face, showing off his sharp teeth.
In a flash and the crushing tug and pull of gravity, your senses were overwhelmed. Everything felt like too much. There was a sweet scent invading your nose. You felt the wind brushing against your skin and the feel of solid ground under your shoes. That, at least, wasn’t so bad. It felt good to be on a solid foundation again. What was bad was the noise. Wherever you were before was completely devoid of any sound, not even the slight buzz that silence tended to have.No right now was terrible. You could hear the wind, the chirping of birds, the rusting of leaves, the flow of water. It all felt way too loud and overwhelming. Perhaps the loudest part was the beat of your own soul and the heavy breathing of your chest.
You moved to open your eyes, but a skeletal hand quickly covered your view, forcing you to instinctively shut them. “don’t.” A rumbling voice whispered in your ear, the speaker’s breath tingling against your over-sensitive skin. Red…
“just… give it a sec”. Your breathing began to slow, and your senses of the environment around you started to normalize. “do me a favor, Doll, and look down for me. imma remove my hand now, got it? Just get used to things for a sec.”
Hesitantly you peeked one eye open, focusing on the red thread of the skeletons sweater. The color seemed too vibrant to be real at first, but after a few seconds returned to normal as your vision adjusted. Waiting for a few more beats, you opened your other eye. Finally, you glanced up at Red. “there ya go, Doll.” the red-eyed Skeleton chuckled. “ya know, for a first-timer, that was quite impressive. ya didn’t throw up or pass out or anything, which is good because that’s kinda a buzz kill.” Red smiled his sharp-toothed grin at you, his golden tooth reflecting in the sunlight. You took one last calming breath before opening your mouth. “What… What the hell was that?” Your surprise and shock quickly faded and melted into anger. How could he just do that?! No warning or anything?! What kind of place was that anyway?! It didn’t make sense. Nothing about that place made any logical sense! Red’s grin quickly fell.
“Doll? before ya get too upset, let go of my ribs…” Red’s voice had become so quiet his usual rumbling voice became almost a whisper. A shot of pain tugged at your soul, forcing you to grimace slightly. You untangled your hands from Red’s ribs and jacket and slowly pulled your hands away, and took a step back to get some distance. You were still angry, but the way Red’s emotions just flipped like that. From him, if anything, you expected anger, not this. At that moment, he somehow seemed to show... weakness? “I… I’m sorry, Red. I didn’t mean to get so angry. Everything was just …unexpected” He searched your face. You took note of his fist clenching before he stuffed them into his pocket. “ehh, it’s my fault, didn’t mean to spook ya, Doll” The two of you stood in uncomfortable silence. Finally, Red cleared his throat, breaking the silence. How do skeletal monsters even do that? “let’s just move on to the tour…” Red turned from you, and you took your gaze from the red and black Skeleton for the first time since you teleported.
“Oh…” Down a short stone path sat a small cottage. You first noted the wooden deck on the house’s side. Part of it was suspended over a shimmering river, winding along the house’s side and down the path’s left side. The outside of the house was mostly made of raw cut stone with a simple A-frame roof. Flowering vines climbed up the wooden beams of the roofed entrance where Red stood. Who had turned to watch you take in your apparent new home?
“well? stop standing there with your mouth hanging open and come inside!” Barked Red as he slammed open the door and stomped inside, not bothering to look back to see if you would follow. With your face flushed from embarrassment, you scurried inside.
You found Red draped across a pale lilac couch. His hood covered most of his face, but you could see the faint glow from his eye lights illuminating the outskirts of his sockets. You took a moment to let your gaze drift around the open room.
The space was mostly white and neutral colored, with pops of lilac and yellow. It helped the area feel warm and welcoming. Which was a good thing considering what being in a cubicle office space had done to you. Nothing but gray and white everywhere… The couch Red was on was situated across from a TV. A circular coffee table and a vintage-looking armchair were placed to the side. Looking to the right side of the room, there was a simple kitchen with an island with lilac bar stools pushed against one side. Next to where you stood at the entrance was a metal spiral staircase that led to an upstairs loft.
You were frozen to your spot at the entrance, wondering if you should wait for Red or explore independently. Red had not moved at all from his spot, leaving you to continue awkwardly standing there. Your hand drifted up to nervously fiddle with a pendant hanging from your necklace’s delicate chain. You bought it from a store a while ago. Normally you didn’t buy things that were not necessary, but it turned out to be a blessing. Your little nervous habit of picking at the stitches of your clothing quickly transferred to messing with your necklace.
“the-fuck you doing?” You jumped at the sudden sound, spinning around to see Red staring at you from his spot. “Oh, I-I wasn’t sure if I h-had to wait or…” you knew your face was probably flushed from embarrassment, which… made you blush more. Red stared at you with a tired look. “do ya need me to hold your hand? or can you put your big girl pants on?” Biting your bottom lip to help you stay quiet, you turned from the smirking Skeleton and stormed up the stairs. Your insides coiled with anger and embarrassment. Oh, how you wish you could wipe that smirk off his skull. First, he takes you to some nonsensical place without warning. Then he entertains himself by embarrassing you!? And what is with him calling you Sugar and Doll?! …ok, breathe. You took 3 deep breaths of air, counting backward from 5 to 1. Slowly you unclenched your hand from the top of the railing. Red seemed to be mostly teasing… you could ask him about that “place” later. Right now, you should just go and explore your new… home? Prison? None of those really seemed appropriate for this situation. Maybe you could just keep thinking of this as a vacation. Just… until you had a better grasp on what the exact situation was.
Finally, having relaxed a bit, you let yourself examine the loft. The main attraction was clearly the bed. Covered in countless purple, yellow and white pillows, a comforter, and a couple more fuzzy gray throw blankets. It looked like a perfect little nest for reading. You couldn’t help but be a little excited to snuggle into those sheets. The bed was pushed up against a wall with a door that led to what you guessed was the bathroom. You wandered over to the loft railing and peered down to the living space expecting to find Red where you left him. But… he was gone? Good, finally, some time to yourself. Smirking in satisfaction, you peeked inside one of the dressers. All but one was empty inside. The rest of your clothes were neatly folded and placed inside.
With a sigh, you let yourself fall backward on the bed. You smiled at how nice it actually was. Hey, small victories matter in a world like this. You stared at the ceiling letting your body relax. The exposed wooden beams caught your eye. You could even hang some fairy lights or plants up there? Perhaps they were strong enough to secure some rope. Your thoughts drifted off, thinking of everything you could do with this place. You might as well make it comfortable since you didn’t think you would be leaving the ‘care’ of the skeleton monsters any soon. It’s not like you had anywhere else to go.
Chapter 7: Something new
Notes:
Heyyyyyyyyyy it's been a little while, huh? Life can be chaotic like that.
Anyway, because it's been so long, there were a few things I wanted to change. So I made the executive decision to go back through all the chapters and correct some things. However, while doing so, I also changed how I portray some of your best skelebois. SO! If you notice any changes in the characters in future posts, that's the reason. The story is pretty similar; I just changed some things around.
(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)
Chapter Text
Chapter 7
You shot upright in a panic, quickly backing up till your head hit the headboard painfully. Your breath hitched as you couldn't quite remember where you were. Fueled by the fear of the nightmare you had woken up from, the panic still gripped your soul. To your surprise, the room was empty, with no masked figures, no hum of heavy machinery… nothing. With unsteady hands, you pushed yourself into a sitting position taking in your surroundings. It had been a long time since you had that dream… a dream of before. After your brain and the pounding of your soul finally allowed you to think straight, you took a moment to remember where you were again. You were safe. You were basically given this cottage for the time being. So this place can be home for a while.
Letting your shoulders sag, you let your body go limp and be consumed by the unnatural amount of pillows. You hadn't meant to fall asleep. It was very unlike you to do that in an unfamiliar place. Normally take the time to scan the room for every possible exit or a hidden area for you to hide things.
Normally it would be impossible for you to just pass out like that… maybe teleportation did something? That… place, perhaps it drained you? A shiver went down your spine at the memory. You felt genuinely surprised that that place didn't find a way to work itself into your dream. Generally, even for dreams that tend to incorporate things from your past, there is always stuff from your day-to-day that you may have seen or heard that gets woven into your nightmares. But perhaps it's for the best. You Honestly didn't want anything about that place to be in your dreams. Just the thought made you uncomfortable.
Resigned to not think about it anymore, You swung your legs over the side of the bed and sat up. Those things didn't matter anymore, especially since you had so much to do.
You explored the cottage for a while. The main 2 things you were happy to find was a massive bathtub in the room behind your bed. It was custom-made to fit the space, especially with the organic way it was shaped. You guessed it could fit 3 people comfortably. The whole bathroom reminded you of this documentary you saw once on Japanese bathhouses, especially with the huge window that gave a beautiful view of the densely packed trees surrounding the cottage. Normally you would worry someone would see you bathing, but the room was on the second story, and the trees provided enough cover. The only thing they let filter through the Snow packed trees was silver rays of sunlight.
The second thing was what you thought was a light switch. However, it turned out to be a switch that powered a mechanism that opened up large panels outside the patio. To your delight, it revealed a massive floor-to-ceiling window. It cast the entire cottage in a soft glow. You opened the glass doors and stepped onto the patio to peer over the railing at the sparking stream that flowed beneath the wooden planks. Perhaps you could spot some fish swimming the current in the summer or spring? The patio had some furniture consisting of a table and 4 chairs. Yet, you wondered if you could get a hammock or something to lounge around in. The naps would be heavenly, with the gentle breeze and the pleasant sound of flowing water.
Once again, you had to stop yourself. This may be your dream home, everything may seem peaceful and calming, but this is still a prison. Even if you liked Green, his gentle voice tickled in the back of your mind. You were still being held against your will. Nothing will change that. You knew that, given the chance, you would escape and never return. Make a new identity in a faraway place, away from the skeletons and anyone that might know your name. Even if your heart ached at that thought, the urge to come to Ebbot was overwhelming for years before you came here, yet you had learned your lesson. You couldn't risk something like this happening again or even worse… Have your past become haunting and repeating itself…You knew your soul couldn't take that again, especially after years of freedom.
You just had to focus on your goal, escape.
But trying to escape right now seemed like a bad idea. You really wouldn't make it far on foot. Feeling resigned to this fate for now. You decided to head inside and grab one of the books on a shelf you spotted earlier.
Papyrus was not necessarily happy with how things took a turn during the meeting. He had difficulty accepting that they were keeping the Human against her will. He did understand his brother's perspective and why he was worried for the general public. However, he couldn't help but feel pity for the Human. Being locked up must be a horrible burden.
Regardless he planned to make her stay as comfortable as possible. He had spent the entire morning cleaning the cottage she would be staying at from top to bottom. He even made sure there was no dust on the wooded support beams. He did not want the Human to think they were lazy slobs. Then before the sun went up, he had meticulously ensured there was no snow on the cobblestone path leading to the house and sprinkled salt on the ground. He was horrified at the thought of the Human getting injured in their care. During the afternoon, he started preparing some delicious pasta for her. He hoped that it might spark a friendship between them. After all, Papyrus was an excellent friend and great at making them.
Yet despite all that, he was nervous. While on the Property, the cottage was still a ten-minute walk from the main house. He had started the journey with hopeful excitement, but the closer he came to the cottage, the more he worried the Human might reject him or be cruel. Now as he stood before the front door, he felt himself hesitate. But Papyruss was no coward! He would not let his fears stop him! So he raised his glove hand to the front door and gave it an energetic knock. After a few moments, the door slowly opened, and a pair of dark green eyes greeted him. "Hello?" Papyrus beamed, "GOOD EVENING HUMAN, I AM THE GREAT PAPYRUS! I HAVE COME TO OFFER YOU SOME HOSPITALITY! I HOPE YOU ENJOY PASTA!"

Chapter 8
As night approached, signaled by the setting sun, you faced an obstacle. Your hand gripped a cool metal handle as you stared blankly into the empty abyss of the refrigerator.
You had already gone through the cabinets twice. There were plates, cups, pots, and pans but absolutely no food in sight. It was probably the 3rd time you went to the refrigerator, expecting something to have just appeared. What did those skeletons expect you to do about food? Red hadn't explained any rules before he left. Were you allowed to leave? Should you go back to the main house and ask? Was a plate going to randomly appear like how it did in the Room? Your concerns were just further enforced by the growl of your stomach.
You had pulled out the phone Green gave you. In the middle of deciding if this situation warrants you sending Green a text, a loud knocking startled you almost enough to drop the brand-new phone and had you whirling to the front door. Who could that be? Maybe Sans is here to ask more dumb questions. Or it was Red here to explain how your life would be from this point on. But it turned out to be neither, as you were greeted by a tall skeleton positively beaming down at you.
That is how a tall skeleton ended up setting delicious-smelling food containers on your kitchen counter. Part of you was glad for the Company even with your isolated tendencies, but a small piece of you focused more on the various dishes he was setting on the counter. You were not really open to the idea of more Skeleton monsters complicating your life. However, you must admit this new one brought a more welcoming energy to your space. Despite your reservations, you were grateful.
The Great Papyrus, as he called himself, was of a tall, lanky build. Despite the cold, he had shown up at your doorstep in Yello workout shorts and a white t-shirt with 'Cool Dude' written across his chest in yellow cursive. At least he had also come in some winter gear: a red knit beanie, thick red mittens, and a worn-out red scarf. As you looked down, his brown lace-up boots were covered in snow, almost up to the red legwarmers from his walk here. Why didn't he teleport? Unless not all skeletons could do that? Looking at his strange outfit, despite the conflicting seasonal elements... he looked pretty cute.
"I'M SORRY HUMAN, BUT COULD'T HELP BUT NOTICE YOUR GAZE" Your face shot upward to meet Papyrus's orange stare. Embarrassment was already turning your face red. "I-I'm so sorry!" But Papyrus only beamed down at you. "NO NEED TO APOLOGIZE! I AM OVERJOYED TO SEE YOU ENJOY MY, UH, MY COUSINS WORK AS WELL!" Your confusion must have been written across your face because Papyrus's face quickly turned a shade of light orange. "OH, MY APOLOGIES. I HAD ASSUMED YOU KNEW OF HIM! HE IS QUITE WORLD-RENOWNED, YOU KNOW? MY COUSIN G IS A GREAT FASHION DESIGNER! HE ALSO KNOWS I ENJOY SPORTSWEAR, SO HE ALWAYS SENDS ME ANY OF HIS LATEST LINES AND-" "Wait!" you interrupted. "Did you just say... G IS YOUR COUSIN?! L-Like the monster with almost a million locations worldwide?!" Of course, you knew him. Everyone did. Four years ago, after Monsters gained their rights, his Company was in the headlines everywhere! G's Company was one of the fastest-growing companies that emerged after the government's initial Monster-Human segregation act was overturned. You always saw ads running about the impressive magic-infused materials they produced. "NYEHEHE. I SEE HE HAS A FAN!" Papyrus returned to plating the food on the table while you were utterly dumbfounded. "HERE, HUMAN, I HOPE YOU DON'T MIND, BUT I MADE MYSELF A PLATE AS WELL... I THOUGHT PERHAPS YOU WOULD APPRECIATE... The Company?"
The gears wildly spinning in your head halted at the soft-spoken request. How could such a bright personality sound so... timid? You just assumed when he arrived with the promise of food that he would also eat with you. It had been a long time since you had dinner with anyone. There was still a tiny twinge of fear in your soul. However, you wanted to make the best out of your situation. A small smile graced your lips. "I would love to have dinner with you, Papyrus."
The glow in his orange lights brightened. It amazed you how those glowing eye lights for each skeleton could showcase such emotion. You couldn't help but wonder what each spark or dimm meant. Papyrus pulled out a chair for you with a flourish. You smiled gratefully up at him. To your delight, causing him to darken a few more shades of orange.
The dinner was delicious. Papyrus had made you a three-course meal. Consisting of a strawberry salad with Feta, baked Ravioli, and cream brulee. Papyrus even whipped out a blow torch to caramelize the sugar on top, which was a bit alarming initially. Despite his hyper personality, he carefully handled the instrument allowing you to ease your anxiety.
Throughout the dinner, you found yourself smiling at Papyrus's stories of puzzles he's solved and all the things he likes about the surface. You found yourself eager to meet his cousin Blue who had popped up in many of his stories and the prank wars they held against their brothers. "-AND YOU WOULD NOT BELIEVE WHAT BLUE DID WHEN MY BROTHER SANS REPLACED ALL THE DRWAR HANDELS IN HIS BEDROOM WITH ONE'S THAT LOOKED LIKE HOT DOGS. HE-" Papyrus paused. You quickly replace the smile on your face. You knew it was foolish to try and hide your discomfort, yet you hoped Papyrus would have just brushed it off. Yet when he stood and pushed back his chair, you couldn't help but shrink into your chair. Cursing yourself for being a fool and not controlling your emotions more, you give Papyrus a strained smile. Those orange eyelights only seemed to dim more and more as he watched you.
With a sigh, Papyrus started to pick up the plates. Not meeting your gaze after a few moments, he spoke. "YOU KNOW... MY BROTHER SANS... HE-HE'S NOT A BAD PERSON. HE IS ACTUALLY QUITE SMART... HOWEVER, THAT TENDS TO BE HIS SECURITY NET AND HIS DOWNFALL. HE OVERTHINKS THINGS A LOT UNTIL THEY ARE TOO MUCH FOR HIM TO BAER. HE USED TO NOT BE LIKE THAT, BUT ONE DAY HE JUST SEEMED TO WAKE UP AND FEAR THE WORLD. I USSEME GREEN TOLD YOU ABOUT THE VOTE WE HAD ON WHAT TO DO WITH YOU... I-I DON'T THINK IT'S RIGHT TO KEEP YOU HERE, BUT THE OTHERS... REGARDLESS I WANT YOU TO KNOW THAT SANS IS NOT A BAD PERSON. HE IS JUST AFRAID," you scoff. "He's not afraid of me." Papyrus slowly turned back to you, still not meeting your gaze. "I WOULD SAY HE IS AFRAID OF THE IDEA OF YOU. A HUMAN MAGE IS A TERRIFYING THING FOR MONSTERS... IT'S WHAT LED TO OUR IMPRISONMENT IN THE FIRST PLACE. MY GUESS IS THAT HE AND THE OTHERS ARE SCARED THERE ARE MORE OF YOU..." He sighs and finally meets your eyes.
"AS FOR MY OPINION OF YOU, I THINK YOU ARE A KIND PERSON. A KIND PERSON WHO DOESN'T DESERVE THE WAY SHE HAS BEEN TREATED. SO I WILL PROMISE I WILL DO MY BEST TO MAKE YOUR STAY HERE AS PLEASENT AS POSSIBLE, PERHAPS WE COULD BE FREINDS ONE DAY" You didn't know how to take any of this. There was one thing you knew for sure. You were no mage. You had yet to hear of them. Yet your soul clenched in fear at the word. Whatever a Mage was, it might be worth figuring out, and it seemed like the answer to why the skeletons kept you.
Papyrus had finished the clean-up and was heading for the door, yet you shot out of your seat and grabbed his hand. The look he gave you left your soul feeling like it was being squeezed. "Papyrus I-... I would like to see you again. Despite the way it has ended I... What I'm trying to say is I enjoy your Company, and... It would make my stay here better if you were there. To-To talk to me, maybe we could cook together next time?" The smile Papyrus gave you made your whole body relax at last. "OF COURSE, HUMAN! IT WOULD BE RATHER DESPICABLE OF ME TO DEPRIVE YOU OF THE GREATNESS THAT IS ME!" Without warning, he scooped you up in a hug, lifting you entirely off the floor. Despite the surprise, you found yourself smiling and enjoying the contact, and when he put you down, it felt like it was too soon. But as a consolation, you had the opportunity to glimpse the glowing orange flush across his cheekbones before he disappeared through the door.
Sans carefully observed his surroundings, taking in the frosty winter air as his breath dissipated. He was vigilant, keeping a close eye on his Brother, especially in the presence of the unpredictable girl. While Papyrus was always eager to meet new people, he had become more reclusive over the years, much to Sans's relief. Although he disliked trailing behind his Brother, he would not allow him to be harmed or worse, particularly in this timeline. Sans had discovered an ideal vantage point earlier in the day, a cluster of tree branches that provided a clear view of the cottage. He had spent the last few hours monitoring the girl for any signs of hostility toward his Brother but had found none. On the contrary, the girl appeared thrilled, and her smile was captivating, making it difficult for Sans to look away. Despite his sudden urge to join them, he knew he had to prioritize Papyrus's safety above all else.
No... Sans stopped that train of thought abruptly. He would not be charmed by her. Sans would observe her, and he would watch her behavior and figure out exactly what she was hiding. That was his objective. He couldn't let himself be distracted by her. Despite wanting to observe her more, Sans felt relieved when Papyrus left her cottage. He didn't waste another second near the girl and teleported back to his Room.
Sans was so engrossed in watching the girl all night that he failed to sense the looming danger nearby. Little did he know, something was watching him too. If only he had taken a moment to look around, he would have noticed the mysterious red and blue eyelights lurking in the snow-covered canopy of trees.

Chapter Text
As the sweet melodies of birds filled the air, you slowly opened your eyes to a new day. The warmth of the cozy blankets enveloped you, and you couldn't help but relish at the moment. The soft light of the morning sun illuminated the room, casting a tranquil atmosphere. You felt content and peaceful, and staying in bed all morning sounded appealing. Maybe just for a little longer.
Your eyes snap open at the sound of a kettle whistling on the stove. With as much grace as a Moldsmall, you stumbled out of bed and rushed to the loft railing. Bracing your hands on the smooth wooden banister, you peer over the edge into the living room. To your relief and dismay, nobody was there, though you couldn't see into the kitchen, which was located under the loft itself. Which meant... You had to go down yourself. The kettle was still whistling away, causing your heart to beat just that muc faster.
As silently as possible, you padded to the bed, picking up the long metal broom. You had found it last night before going to bed and had placed it next to your bed for easy access. Weapon in hand, you approached the winding staircase, pausing momentarily, trying to calm your nerves to no avail. You were terrified. Taking a deep breath, you slowly and gently as possible to not make any more noise. You descended the stairs. Reaching the bottom, you let out a small yelp when your uninvited guest appeared before you.
"Morning Sunshine." Mutt greeted you, leaning casually on one elbow against the ganister. A lazy grin that showcased his canines was already spread across his face. "W-what are you doing in my house?!" you exclaimed, stepping back and causing you to trip on the stairs behind you. But before your back could smack against the approaching stairs, a solid skeletal arm wrapped around your waist. You whip your face back to the offending skeleton only to be greeted by his half-lidded burnt orange eyelights uncomfortably close to your face. Your whole body froze from the closeness, causing the broom to drop from your hand and clatter to the ground.
"Already falling for me, Sunshine?" Mutt whispered against your cheek, instantly causing a hot flush to cover your cheeks. You pushed the lanky skeleton off you. "No, you just startled me. And again, what are you doing in my house!" Mutt chuckled lowly and vanished, only to reappear at the kitchen island to pour himself a cup of tea. " I just wanted to see you again, and Milord asked me to bring you groceries so your fridge is stocked with everything you might need." Mutt sipped his tea, watching you as closely as you were watching him. Well, at least your food problem was solved.
You took a deep breath in and slowly let the frustration and embarrassment flow out with an exhale. These skeletons were indeed a handful. "So uh, Mutt, right? Do you often invade women's homes uninvited? or is that just a captive thing?" You physically saw Mutt's shoulders tense, though his facial expression stayed the same. However, his eyelight did glow a bit brighter for a split second. "I uhh..." He definitely seemed uncomfortable. Good. You walked up to the counter and leaned against it, focusing on Mutt. "What Cat got your tongue?" You let a light grin settle on your expression. Mutt just grinned right back at you, letting his golden canines part. To your shock and surprise, he allowed a burnt orange translucent tongue to lull out of his mouth.
Your eyes flew wide and jumped up, practically onto the counter. "I just realized how cool those actually are! I mean, I've seen Red's Tongue a few times, but I didn't really comprehend how cool they really were, and not to mention they come in different colors! Yours perfectly matches your eyes!" Mutt released a low chuckle and closed his mouth, resting his skull against the counter. His whole posture is a picture of relaxation. "It's nice to see you so excited, sunshine. But I gotta admit, it's a bit strange to see you so enthusiastic over a bit of magic, considering that little display you put on when we first met." He asks. You sigh, feeling a bit jealous. "Well, obviously. I have my magic, yeah... But not in such a physical form."
"care to tell us what your magic is exactly?" You spun around to face the door at the sudden presence of a familiar deep voice. "morning, kid." was Sans's only greeting as he strode over to you. You already felt your heart and soul start to beat faster. "H-Hey, Sans." You mumble softly, folding your arms around yourself. "What brings you here today?" Sans only seems to glower at you before he looks at Mutt. "what are you still doing here? i thought you were told to drop off the food?" Mutt doesn't even look at him and lifts shit mug of tea. "Can't a guy enjoy his tea?" Sans rolls his eyelights and turns back to you.
"so kid, this is how it's gonna work. mutt over there will drop off groceries once a week. you are free to do what you want in the house, and you can even wander the property. however, there is a fence around it, and you are not allowed to leave the borders of it. is that clear?" You nodded your head obediently. You were already feeling a slight tinge of pain in your soul at the action alone. "good, now give me your hand." With another tinge, you held out your hand to him. The rough texture of his bones met your wrist as he pulled out a thick band of metal out of his pocket. Your eyes widen a fraction as he opens the bar and clasps it around your wrist. "now the other." With shaking hands, you hold out your other hand. Again, he pulls out a second metal band and clasps it around your other wrist.
You hear Mutt push up from the counter, but your eyes don't leave the metal that now encircles your wrists. A sense of fear overcame you, and you felt as though the weight of the bands was physically dragging you down, drenching your soul in dread.
"W-What are these?" your voice was barely above a whisper. In your peripheral, you could see Mutt. His eyelights had gone completely dark. "it essentially does what your little magic extractors did. this metal comes from the underground. it's rarely used... however, i happen to have some on hand. i added some tech, including a tracker and some monitors to keep track of your vitals. me and my cousins don't particularly enjoy your method of stopping those magic outbursts. this is my solution." You wondered briefly how these metal bands could possibly hold any electrical circuits. The bands were light and smooth, with no sign of seams or anything other than the clasp that kept them together.
"that's all i came to say," Sans declared, the sound of his voice echoing in the oppressive silence. You couldn't help but notice the metal bands tightly secured around your wrists, a constant reminder of your predicament. Sans shifted awkwardly, his frayed jacket sleeve twisted between his fingers. The room was so quiet that the faint hum of nothingness grew louder with each passing second, emphasizing the weight of the situation. Despite his apparent discomfort, Sans seemed at a loss for words.
Finally, Mutt seemed to be shaken from his shock as he firmly stated, "Sans, leave." The intensity and hostility in Mutt's voice caused a shiver of apprehension to course through your body. Unexpectedly, Sans disappeared instantly, giving you the impression that he was running away.
You turned to Mutt, who was now staring down at his mug that had once contained tea. It now lay scattered in pieces across the counter, the liquid slowly dripping over the edge onto the floor. You didn't even remember hearing the mug break, but you guessed you had drowned everything out momentarily.
"You know none of us talked about this. The vote was not for..." Mutt waved his hand towards your wrists. "Those." He gave a half-hearted laugh. "But I'm honestly not surprised. Almost everyone does what they want. Sans is no exception..." Mutt met your gaze. His eyelight glowed dimly. "I should go." You opened your mouth to say something, yet with the next blink, Mutt was gone, along with the shattered mug.
After making yourself some breakfast, you decided to sit in the living room with your food and watch the snowflakes drift by. Despite only waking up a while ago, you felt as if you could already go back to sleep.
Maybe it was due to the cold weather and cloudy sky. Perhaps it was the stress that life kept throwing at you. But your best guess was it was due to the incident with Sans this morning. When you examine the metal bands around your writs more thoroughly, they could be easily mistaken for simple bracelets. To you, they just felt like shakels with invisible chains. But you could pretend. You could go on if you pretended they were simply bracelets. That was easier. However, the reaction that Mutt had... broke the illusion a bit. You couldn't help but think there was more to these 'Bracelets' based on Mutt's response alone. But then again, there was no point in wondering. This is your reality. It already happened, so there was no point dwelling on it.
Still, even with all the distractions you found, your gaze never strayed far from the metal bands.
Notes:
We love when one of our skeleboys gives us some nice new jewelry! Honestly, Sans is so sooooooo sweet and caring! <3
lol
Anywayyyyyyyyyyyyyy
As always, let me know what you guys think!
I'm already working on the next chapter, so since I'm home, hopefully, it should be done a lot sooner than the last update.
