To Date A Predator

Summary:

TDAP is a Novel-like fanfiction, a highly ambitious AU of the Zootopian world, with nuanced layers of societal and cultural commentary, focusing on inclusion. The first movie's plot remains largely intact, as do the main characters and their personalities and backstories...

But! a savage light—somewhat comparable to Beastars—shines on everything: the instinct-driven dynamic between Predators and Prey remains nearly as fierce as in olden times and governs daily interaction and societal conduct. No systemic racism; distancing out of mutual fear and choice.

A mix of literary fiction, dark-ish dystopia, eventual romance, and complex cultures à la Robert Jordan, TDAP focuses on Judy Hopps' and Nick Wilde's psychologies/ambitions as they navigate the dystopian city of Zootopia after the Nighthowler case and the much, much more meaningful pit incident—the by-now century-long experiment of the only city on Animalia where sentient Predator and Prey—and their inextricable cultures—coexist and paws-on research for inclusion is done.

Chapter 1: Acknowledgements, Inspirations, and Preliminary Information

Notes:

Author's Note:
Thank you for expressing interest in this story of mine! While borrowing from the setting of Zootopia, To Date A Predator is largely an original work or at least has many original elements and characters that go far beyond the scope of anything Zootopia-related. There is a lot of worldbuilding to this unique setting, so I advise you to read the information presented here, as well as the first chapter before making a judgement call on whether this is a story for you or not.

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Inspirations:

As an avid reader and writer, TDAP and the cultures therein have been inspired by a plethora of published works, movies, and fanfiction alike. Most notably:

Movies:

  • Zootopia (1)

Mangas:

  • Beastars

Novels:

  • The Wheel Of Time (book series) by Robert Jordan, later finished by Brandon Sanderson
  • Dune (book series) by Frank Herbert, the "main" eight-book series" later finished by Brian Herbert

Fanfiction:

  • Too many works to recall or list from both the Beastars fandom and the Zootopia fandom, but especially those focusing on the predator/prey themes.

Acknowledgements:

While written only by me, TDAP is a big project, and I have several individuals to thank for their help, be it as part of the beta reading team on the official FurFanatic Writing Discord or as personal/emotional aids. I thank each and every one of them for their help, advice, kind words in times of need, and dedication to making TDAP the best it can be. They are, alphabetically:

1. Major Contributions:

  • Barnabas
  • itzmasterz
  • Toboe
  • Vicarious

2. Contributions:

  • Dawnless
  • Loki
  • plank_space
  • Pompombojam
  • Taberdi

Additionally, I would like to thank my kind and loving parents, without whom none of this would have been possible.

Additional Information:

1. On the rating:

While the age rating—or the stigma thereof—may indicate otherwise, NSFW scenes and erotica comprise only a small portion of the overall narrative; instead, the oppressive themes led me to choose this rating.

2. Chapters & Updates

Chapters are roughly released every 4-8 weeks and are between 5-8k words in length.

3. On the expected scope:

TDAP is an ambitious project that goes far beyond and partially in contradiction to what Zootopia supplies. The expected scope has changed many times and is at this point estimated at around 120k words or a rough total of around 20 chapters. Note that earlier chapters are much longer at 6-8k+ while later chapters are around 3-5k.
