Tainted Love

Summary:

“sometimes i feel i’ve got to run away,

i’ve got to get away,

from the pain you drive into the heart of me.”

tainted love, oh, tainted love.

Notes:

This is a lovely little L x reader fic I’ve had simmering in my mind for quite some time-! I’m very excited to be working on it finally. I’ve had several WIPs in the past, but this one, I’m going to work harder on, I’m going to work harder than I ever had on a writing project. This is supposed to be a bit like Danganronpa: IF, if that makes sense. The reader obtains the Shinigami Eyes and uses it to change the whole trajectory of the story of Death Note!

Happy reading-!

Chapter 1: Prologue. “To feel again,”

Chapter Text

“there are many types of monsters in this world.

monsters who will not show themselves or cause trouble,

monsters who abduct children,

monsters who devour dreams,

monsters who suck blood,

and monsters who always tell lies.

lying monsters are a real nuisance.

they are much more cunning than other monsters.

they pose as humans even though they have no understanding of the human heart.

they eat even though they have never experienced hunger.

they study even though they have no interest in academics.

they seek friendship even though they do not know how to love.

if i were to encounter such a monster,

i would likely be eaten by it.

…because in truth, i am that monster.”

Chapter 2: Chapter 1. “To Be Human Once More”

Summary:

L tries hard not to think about the bad memories and horrible, horrible things he’s seen over the recent years. He tries to forget about the longing in his heart — longing for another.

Chapter Text

To Be Human Once More

L sighed and stepped inside his apartment. He went straight to his office and set down his things before sitting on the floor. It had been a long, long while, and he was finally…

No. He wasn’t home.

He always told himself, just because you reside somewhere, or are an inhabitant of an area, does not make it your home. L had been many places, back and forth always. With the BB murder cases, he had to live in Los Angeles for quite a while, and now it was back to Japan for the Kira case. Even if he was always living in some luxurious studio apartment, it never really felt like home. It wasn’t the monster’s home. So, he always just called it his, ‘residence’.

He got down and started to unpack all his things, the books and documents and all those little unimportant things he usually kept. L was royally tired, and wished more than anything he could be in any other place than this, but he knew he wouldn’t get much sleep tonight either.

The monster, finished setting away all his things, and went to his room. It was sort of like the room he had back at at Wammy’s, with the plain walls and the desk and mattress and blanket in the corner. L had never been much for decoration, or much of any unnecessary frilly sort of thing. He always said all he needed in his room was a desk, his computer, and maybe his bed, but that was the only thing in his room that was there for show.

L got down and lie on the mattress, looking up at the ceiling. He pulled his phone out of his pocket and put on some music, then rested the phone on his chest as he looked up. The monster, L, rubbed his temples as he sighed and closed his eyes.

He thought of Beyond Birthday, and Naomi Misora, and all the horrors of the murders in LA. And now, he thought of the Kira case and the various murders that Kira had already gotten away with. Kira… had, had scuttled away from the murder scene as a coward, as a silly thing too afraid to kill with his bare hands. But the monster did not know that yet.

L had still been in LA for the first pieces of the Kira case, the first fifty-some murders at least. Only now that the Japanese police force members working on the Kira case had been widdled down to a handful of Task Force members were things starting to get interesting. L hardly needed the Task Force, even if he’d get to meet them tomorrow evening.

L hardly needed the Task Force, he told himself. The monster did not need anyone, he told himself again and again and again. However, the monster still had a burning inside, a burning sensation he got in his chest whenever he looked at “humans”.

He’d walk in the park, and it’d hurt to see a cute couple holding hands just like it’d hurt any other person. He may be a monster, but it was never that monsters didn’t have feelings.

He kept staring at the ceiling. Finally, he smiled ever so slightly, just letting the corners of his mouth come upwards, and he whispered,

”Maybe having company wouldn’t be so bad,”

He said to himself. The monster said to himself.

He rubbed his eyes. He knew he wouldn’t be able to get any sleep, he wouldn’t be able to sit still after sitting still for hours on the plane back to Japan. He thought about Watari, where was that damn man in the first place…? He thought about Kira, where was Kira…? And he thought about many things. He stood and walked over to the window. It was raining, much as L had been accustomed to seeing. He rested his hand against the glass for a moment, before closing his eyes and gritting his teeth just a little. He then leaned back and flopped back down onto the bed.

He’d try to sleep, at least, for he knew he had lots to do tomorrow.

He awoke in the middle of the afternoon, maybe 4p.m. God knows what he dreamt about.

The monster got up and rubbed his eyes and slapped his face a little, trying to get the sleepiness away. He stood and walked into his office, all alone again. The office was always silent and the monster man loved it. Usually, he did, actually.

Today, anything and everything hurt.

Loneliness had been eating away at the monster man for a good while now, it just pulled at and reached for pieces of his soul until all the monster man could think about was ‘I just want somebody near me,’. He really just wanted to get away from the dirty feeling that came with being himself.

The monster wanted a non-monster right there next to him. He wanted a friend, or, or maybe even, someone more than a friend, someone to trust and love and kiss goodnight every evening.

It was usually just studying case files, reports, sometimes having to interview a person of interest. And it was all fine and dandy to L, but he couldn’t help but want some other human interaction. Sure, it was lovely to have Watari, but, but, even the monster will admit it, ask him, he wants a partner.

He knew he wouldn’t ever have that, though.

Monsters like him shouldn’t have to bother the humans, no, no, not at all.

Monsters like him shouldn’t live.

The monster sighed and shook his head a little, his fluffy black hair whipping around as the monster tried to get the thoughts out. He had to focus now. He poured over the files for hours, trying only a little, to find Kira’s identity.

It wasn’t like he had to try.

He was always — a case solving machine.

He worked on the case for hours and hours, tapping his foot out of impatience. The first meeting he had with the Task Force was today, he couldn’t just sit around and do nothing-!

But, it wasn’t like he could think of anything else to do. The monster had found himself bored.

Welp, whatever, he thought.

Eleven p.m., an hour before the meeting with the Task Force, came around, and L stepped into his car — an old, beat-up grey Cadillac, and started up the engine. He sighed and leaned his head back against the headrest for a moment, squeezing his eyes shut before opening them again and reversing out into the road.

The drive there was silent, with L being alone as he usually was. He never liked listening to music while he drove, he felt like it was just some stupid sound to make up for the fact he was always alone.

Always had that loneliness in his heart and his head clawing away at him, making him feel so unsteady.

After some time, he arrived at the hotel at which he and the task force would meet.

He got to the designated room, and watched the clock tick until it finally struck midnight. Then, the task force began to shuffle in.

‘Oh, finally. Took them long enough.’

He thought to himself as he stood. He looked at each task force member, observing every minuscule movement of their bodies. He stood with his hands in the pockets of his baggy blue jeans, wearing a disinterested expression.

That was, until he locked gazes with none other than the lovely little Y/N L/N.

He didn’t notice the God of Death standing right next to them, however. He stared at Y/N L/N, and they stared back.

‘Those striking red eyes… They’re obviously wearing contacts, they have to be.. Or…’

L thought to himself, before fixing his gaze away from them. An awkward moment of silence passed as L and the task force eyed each other, looking for any suspicious behaviour.

They did not trust, and they did not look to.

He did not trust, and he did not look to.

For he did not know, but lovely little Y/N L/N would turn out to be a real problem for the likes of L Lawliet.

Meanwhile, none other than Light Yagami sat at the desk in his bedroom, writing in his notebook- A regular notebook, not the Death Note, poring over his expeditions taken over the last few weeks. With the murders of those twelve FBI agents, including Raye Penber, he knew there must be some loose end, something he didn’t expect…

There had to be one deciding factor, one little clue he left behind. He didn’t have time.

Not for this, not for anything.

His confidence in his plots was wavering, now.

L knew all about where he lived, and even knew he was a student, just because he killed Lind L. Tailor. L knew too much, any move Light made was risky now. He heard Ryuk walk over and ask why he wasn’t using the Death Note today, but he didn’t respond.

He didn’t have time. Not for this, not for anything, and certainly not for Y/N.

But thoughts of Y/N L/N haunted his memory.

There was something about them, he thought in the back of his mind. He gently whistled to himself as he stood and walked over to the window. He opened the window, letting the chilly winter air blow on his face. Light Yagami, his school’s top scoring student, the kind and charming friend, the appealing and attractive boyfriend, the cunning and cautious murderer,

Kira.

They slam the book shut, closing their eyes for a moment. They sigh and lean back in their chair.

“I believe that’s enough for today, honey,”

They say softly. You nod and they kiss you goodnight before you head off to your room.

They promised they’d keep reading tomorrow anyway. As you tossed and turned in bed, the tune of the little song they sang before repeated in your mind.

“Tainted love, oh, tainted love,”

Try, Try, Try Again

The chief, Mr. Yagami, finally broke the silence.

”I apologise for our tardiness, anyway, I’m Chief Yagami of the NPA,” He said, holding up his police ID. Then one by one, the other task force members introduced themselves, save for a H/C-haired person towards the back of the group.

Y/N L/N, the weird one with the eyes.

After a moment of staring at the task force members with a blank expression, L finally began,

”Bang!” He said, pointing his hand at Mr. Yagami. He then said, “Mr. Soichiro Yagami of the NPA, if I were Kira you would be dead. Everyone, please do not give your names out so carelessly. But you, you did the right thing.” He said, turning to Y/N. “What should I call you?”

Y/N put their hand on their cheek out of surprise, their E/C eyes widening a little. “O-Oh, uhm… Call me Y/N, please. And I use ( __ ) pronouns as well. Anyway, nice to meet ya!” They tilted their head slightly, a smile creeping across their face.

L nods. “Now, everyone, take your seats. We have lots to discuss.”

The meeting began and it went as expected, L went over every recent event regarding the Kira case, explained his thoughts about it, the task force gave their input, and lots of other little stupid stuff.

L went over the murders of the FBI agents, the incident with Lind L. Tailor, and then his suspicion on anyone with connections to the Japanese Police who had been investigating Kira.

”Well, now that we’ve gotten the most important part of this meeting out of the way, I want to speak with each of you in private, just to clear any suspicion I may have.” L, the monster, said, still resting his hands on his knees.

The task force members went in to a second room, one by one, and spoke with L. Then, it came to be Y/N’s turn.

They walked into the second room, sweating just a little. They sat down across from the monster, the anxiety evident in their expression. Y/N bit their nails as they waited for L to speak.

L looked at them, observing their every feature. What stuck out the most to him were those striking red irises, the blood red eyes that seemed to give off an eerie glow. His stare was intense as well.

The dark haired man dropped a few more sugar cubes into his tea, still curled up in his chair, then he finally looked up at Y/N.

”I’ll say, you do seem more interesting than the others. Though, it’s possible that’s true for all the wrong reasons,” He said, stirring his tea.

”Oh, I can assure you, I’m interesting for all the best reasons-! Aheheh~!” Y/N squealed, clasping their hands together in excitement. The look in the man’s eyes seemed to soften a little.

”I’ll have to see for myself.” His voice went back to it’s usual sharpness. “Now, I’m going to begin with a few questions. Nothing personal, it’s only that I must make an evaluation of your character and if you are worthy of my suspicion,” He murmured, bringing his thumb up to his lip.

”Alright, Ryuzaki,” Y/N said, a smile still on their face. He didn’t get how that exceptionally stupid person could be so dumb and such a ray of a sunshine all at the same time.

”Well, what was it that made you join the Kira case?” He asked, looking Y/N in the eyes. He was always so… indifferent. He hardly cared about anything other than his job. The monster was there to solve cases and not much else.

”Oh. I was asked to work on it, by the Chief. He wanted me to work on this case rather than another because I had ‘a certain ability, one that would be exceptionally helpful if used for the purpose of pursuing Kira’. At least, that’s what he told me,” Y/N said, their smile leaving their mouth but remaining in their eyes. Their striking blood red eyes.

”Interesting,” L hummed, sipping his tea. He then continued, “Well, are you interested in catching him or are you only in this because it’s your job?”

His face still betrayed no emotion at all as he stared at Y/N, though he still wore a different expression from his usual one. There was something about the look in his eyes that made him seem more approachable.

Y/N thought for a moment about his words.

Do I really want to catch Kira? Or am I only here because I have to be?’ They thought.

”Well… I suppose I really do want to catch Kira. He’s a murderer, after all. It don’t-“

”Doesn’t.”

“It doesn’t matter who he’s killing, he’s still a murderer. I want to catch him and bring him justice-!” Y/N said, their smile reappearing.

”That’s respectable,” He said, finally looking interested. The corners of his mouth started to lift as he attempted to smile. “I believe you and I will both have our wishes granted, as we both know justice always prevails.” He says as he looks up at Y/N and smiles his peculiarly soothing smile.

The tone in his voice did not change however, only the tenderness of his expression.

”Yeah, for sure! The task force will make sure of it!” Y/N exclaimed happily.

L nodded and leaned back again, his smile fading as he brought his thumb back up to his lip.

”I believe that’s all for now. I don’t see a purpose in any further questioning, you’ve made it clear you don’t have any ties to Kira,” He said, gnawing on his thumbnail as his expression reverted back to its usual ‘shut up, I’m thinking’ look.

”Okay,” Y/N said, nodding. They stood and took a step before stopping in the doorway. They looked down for a second then up at him again. “Bye, Ryuzaki. I hope you have a nice day,” They waved just a little before walking out.

It was raining out, but Y/N remembered to bring an umbrella. They started to slowly walk home, a smile on their face as pleasant thoughts drifted through their mind.

Rem did not speak to them, but she was usually like this. She was wary of that man, the one Y/N was into, Light Yagami. Rem disliked thinking about him, however, and quickly shook the thoughts out of her mind.

She kept walking beside Y/N and spoke not a word until the two arrived in Y/N’s bedroom.

Y/N sat on the floor and looked up at Rem.

“Oh, Rem, I’m so tired..” They said, rubbing their eyes. They took off their jacket and looked into the full size mirror in the corner of their room.

”Perhaps you should sleep, then, Y/N,” Rem said, leaning down slightly as Y/N looked into the mirror. Y/N could see Rem behind them with the mirror. Y/N began to run their fingers through their hair as they peered at their reflection.

”I guess so. Thanks, Rem,” They said, smiling and looking up at her. Rem nodded and Y/N stood and climbed into their messily made bed before pulling the covers up and closing their eyes. Y/N fell asleep quite quickly, and Rem remained staring out the window.

Rem thought of the way she and Y/N met, and how it felt so odd being around a human like them.

Meanwhile, L sat in his room, pondering all those he suspected. Though, one thought really launched itself onto him and clung on, his little hunch that Light Yagami had some relation to the Kira case. It was early morning and the sun was beginning to rise, but L didn’t mind. Sleep was a privilege he allowed himself on occasion, not something he needed anymore.

He sat hunched in his chair, spinning it to face the window.

There’s something about that, that Y/N L/N, something fascinating me, drawing me in…

Oh, how I wonder… Kira, where are you?

No, I’ve got that already, you’re in the Kanto region, the better question is who are you?

Light Yagami, the chief’s son has certainly got something up. I haven’t got proof, but I’ve got a burning feeling.’

He silently thought to himself, still chewing on his thunbnail. On his desk sat several pages of case documents sprawled out, a stack of plates that once carried various sweets, and a few of the photographs important to the case. The window in his desk had been pulled open, just so the gentle breezes, the crisp autumn air, could sneak in.

Finding himself deeper and deeper in thought, he started to hum an upbeat but still… off putting tune. There was always something about L’s singing that made it… unsettling, and just his hum could put any person in a state of unease, but L never once thought about it.

Occasionally, he thought about things he knew he shouldn’t.

Oh, I wonder where that imposter is now,’

’Oh, I wonder what would have happened if Watari never found me,’

’Oh, I wonder what civilisation would be like if I ever gave up and-‘

He usually stopped himself once he got to there. Often described as a ‘chronic daydreamer’, he usually lived in a world of his own. Of course, cases were just puzzles to be solved and people were just toys to be played with until the next cool edition came out and he moved on.

He looked at the whitening sky, still biting on his thumbnail as he thought. He shivered as a sudden breath of cool wind blew in. He leaned over and slowly shut the window, still humming gently.

He closed his eyes and lie still momentarily, and many things flashed through his mind of orderly disarray. He thought of Y/N L/N, the stupid beauty, and Light Yagami, definitely a suspect by now, and he thought of many other little things that wouldn’t make sense to him or anyone else.

He stood and walked down the hall for a moment, and stopped near a spare room. Watari was sitting in a rocking chair, his arms crossed and his head down, fast asleep. L paused in the doorway and smiled at the sight before continuing on to his room.

He spent the next few hours on his several computers going over evidence from the Kira case, piecing together as much as he could before it was full daylight out and he would start to have things to do. He, the monster, (oh, don’t you forget, he’s still a monster) got up after at least two hours. He stretched and walked around the room for a moment, before sighing and running his hand through his hair.

Watari was up and gone for the day, a note sitting on the table in the main room. L read the note and went down to his room again, likely to choose something to wear for the day. And that is what he did, emerging from his room in his plain ‘uniform’ of a long sleeved white shirt and baggy blue jeans.

Then he went off for another meeting with the task force. As he drove to the same hotel from the previous night, he turned on the radio and flipped through a few stations before he got to one playing something interesting.

After another half hour, he arrived and went down to the room at which he and the task force would meet. He waited for a few minutes, as he was very early, and then watched as Y/N walked through the door.

They licked their finger and prepared to turn a page when they began,

”Oh, my, it’s late. Run along and go on to bed,”

They said, closing the book.

”And we can continue tomorrow,”

They smiled at me and I kissed them goodnight before I went off to my room.

Notes:

Hope you enjoyed that! I’ll try and write longer chapters <3 Lots to come and I can’t make this 70 chapters long so- 😰

Chapter 4: Chapter 3. “Dial Tone”

Dial Tone

After a moment, Y/N finally spoke.

”L, could I ask you a few things…?” They said, looking up at him and scooting over on the couch to be closer to him.

”I do not see why not,” His monotone voice rang out in reply, as he still refused to make eye contact.

”This might sound odd, but… Kira is really a murderer who kills by means of inducing a heart attack on his victims, and can kill several people all over the world in an extremely small time frame…?” Y/N asked, like they were trying to confirm that everything that was said the previous night was true.

”That is true, Y/N. Why? Do you not believe such a thing could be achieved?” He asked, running his fingers through his messy black hair.

”That’s weird. Don’t you think? A weird premise of a case should have a weird way that it’s solved,” Y/N said, before taking a piece of paper and pen out of their bag.

”It is weird, Y/N.” He said, watching them from his perch on his chair.

”Have you..” Y/N covered their mouth for a moment, giggles escaping their lips. “Have y-“ They kept laughing, and had to cover their mouth.

“Y/N, I do not see how this is funny.”

”Nevermind, L. Sorry, I was just thinking about something else.” They said. L gave them a reluctant nod, and Y/N began drawing with the pen and paper they had retrieved.

Deep in his mind, L pondered why Y/N would act this way. ‘Perhaps they know something I don’t…’ He thought, still biting his nails. Questions, questions, and a few more questions drifted through his mind. The Kira case was one of the exceptionally difficult puzzles- er, cases, L had been tasked with solving.

Y/N had turned, their back now facing L, but he could still hear them snickering. ‘Something is amiss…’ He thought.

”Y/N-…?” He finally asked.

They turned and looked at him again, a softer look in their eyes and a more genuine smile on their lips. “Well… I guess it’s only a bit odd,” They said, smiling a crooked smile at him. “How Kira does that. If this was an overly exaggerated super dramatic romance filled teenage drama, I’d almost say there could be a supernatural component to how Kira kills…“ They said, hoping L would take the hint. This would be no fun if they just gave all the important characters everything they needed to achieve their goals! The show would only be a few episodes if that happened.

”Y/N, that is highly unlikely,” He said, before pausing and looking down for a moment. “However… Highly unlikely does not mean impossible…” He finally looked at them. “But, it’s also highly unlikely anyone else would believe us.” He murmured plainly, dropping his hands to his sides.

”That’s right…” They sighed, wishing they could just give L the answers.  “But, but, my certain abilities, those eyes, they’re- If I was born with The Eyes, it’s proof there’s something supernatural going on around here!” They exclaimed.

”I’m afraid I do not know what you mean.”

”Well, Mr. Yagami does-! He knows exactly about the eyes-!” They said, smiling and pulling at their lower eyelids. “These things,” They flicked their finger towards their bright red irises and yellowish scleras, “These are the key to finding Kira-!”

”And I’m only hearing of this now?” L asked, sticking his thumb deeper into his mouth as he thought.

Y/N brought their hand away from their face and looked down. “I didn’t ever think of saying it, I thought you knew,” They said, looking up at him again.

“Well, I-“ He began, but then turned his head at the sound of the rest of the task force entering the hotel room. Y/N stood and got to another seat to make room for the other members.

L looked up at them and gave the other members a nod of acknowledgment before mostly everyone got to work, pouring through files and rewatching tapes. The task force members had only spoke with each other for a few minutes, and even then it was a distant murmur of thoughts, and ‘hey, look at this’s.

The day went similarly to the previous day, in the sense that the investigation was getting somewhere. Slowly, very, very slowly, they were getting somewhere. Y/N sincerely hoped they wouldn’t have to immediately let the task force members in on the existence of the Death Note. That’d make things less fun. Besides, while their Death Note had recently gone missing, Rem was still with them, so they didn’t hate not having it as much.

Y/N wanted their Death Note back, they truly did. Their goal this whole time was to keep it safe and out of the hands of the first Kira. Their Death Note was the second of many Death Notes in the human world, and Y/N wanted to collect as many as possible. If they had all the Death Notes in the human world, Kira could not have any, and therefore could not return to his murderous rampage.

Y/N would have to search for their Death Note on their own. They knew if it fell into the hands of Kira or one of his supporters, the Kira case would increase in difficulty. And if a second Kira got loose, oh, it’d be double-trouble.

The day went quickly, with how much thinking Y/N had to do. They needed to focus on both catching Kira, and relocating their Death Note. Lots to juggle, and all without attracting suspicion from L.

As parts of the day went by and it began to get late, most of the task force members began to shuffle out of the workroom. First Aizawa went, then a half-hour later Ide left. Then Mogi, Ukita, and Matsuda left.

By this time, it was only the Y/N, L, and the Chief left working. Well, if it could be called that.

L was… eating his fourth slice of cake that day, and looking over photographs of the suicide notes three of Kira’s victims had left.

Y/N was attempting to communicate with Rem in the most discreet way possible. Attempting, because they were hardly managing it.

L could hear them, while he pretended not to. Monstrous fiend, that man, always had a superhuman sort of hearing.

And the Chief, Soichiro Yagami, was organizing files on the Kira case. It should’ve been Matsuda rearranging the documents, but he had gone and left the task to Mr. Yagami.

Another half-hour passed and Y/N began to feel their eyelids getting heavier and their back getting more hunched as they sat in the corner and tried to focus on the work before them. L stayed perched on a couch looking over evidence with that same blank expression.

By that time, Soichiro finally left to go home. Once L believed Soichiro was really gone, he turned to Y/N and motioned towards the seat across from him.

”Y/N.” He said plainly, making them flinch a little. They looked up at him before sitting in the spot across from him. “Please, if you would not mind… I would like you to stay. There are things we need to talk about.”

Y/N didn’t quite understand what he was on about, and it frightened them. “Things we need to talk about… Such as?”

”Well…” He began, sipping the cup of tea he had Watari bring him a few minutes earlier. “I’d like to go back to the conversation we were having this morning, before everyone else arrived here. Your eyes, Y/N. Or… ‘The Eyes’, as you’d call them.”

”Oh-! Uhm… It’s- some weird..” They paused as they perused their mind for the right word. “Defect.. That I was born with. Though, it has been beneficial in enabling me… to do things not many others can.”

”A congenital ‘defect’ having to do with your eyes. But what is it?”

”They allow me.. to.. to see things, I suppose. To see a person’s real name above their head. Though, it only works on some occasions, like if I can see a big enough portion of their face.”

”Oh, that’s why you always avoided looking me in the eye. Is that it?” He asked, a lightbulb appearing above his head in his mind. He looked at Y/N, and the shock in their expression gave away that he had been correct. “I see… Well, that’s certainly beneficial, alright. And you said before that the Chief, Soichiro, knows of this?”

”Yes.” Y/N replied simply. “May I go now? I’ve finished all my work for the day.”

”No, no, I’d rather you stay. I have much to ask you about your ability. You called it.. ‘The Eyes’ like.. like it was something about them that made them special and supernatural in some way…” He said again, still thumbing his lip.

”Yes, they’re… My parents always told me ‘The Eyes’ were the eyes of a Shinigami.”

”A death god.” L repeated. He’d heard about those before, and it was suspected that Beyond Birthday possessed a similar power, but L hadn’t ever really quite believed in it. Nonsense to him. He’d never really understood how the existence of a God, or any other higher being, would work, and due to that, he just wrote it off as impossible. But Y/N’s previous revelation only opened a Pandora’s box of sorts of questions burning in his mind.

Y/N tilted their head upwards slightly, and they finally met his gaze. “Uh-huh. I’m unsure as to why a death god would bestow such a power upon me, but I’m… I’m grateful nonetheless, I suppose. It’s certainly been beneficial to have.” They said. “I dislike using it, though… And, and, I promise I haven’t used it to see your true name!” There was a certain desperation evident in their tone now, a desperation to be believed. L picked up on it and nodded, still continuing to suck on his thumb.

”Alright, Y/N. I don’t not believe you.” He said. It technically wasn’t a lie. Like double negatives and floating dolphins. “And uh… What you said… About your suspicion over supernatural involvement in how Kira kills… I don’t know, it sort of resided with me…” He said, his voice beginning to fade out as he stared into the distance and began to space out.

”Oh, really? I thought you’d never share my stance on that, that’s great!” They exclaimed. “Maybe we could work on our theories together.”

And so they did, for the next several hours, L and Y/N discussed their each and every theory on how Kira operates. Y/N found it fun to watch L guess, they knew they would never tell L about the existence of the Death Note unless they absolutely had to. And they didn’t have to, so they wouldn’t. They’d retrieve their Death Note, and once they’d done that, they could focus on trying to catch Kira.

The discussion went on and on, for a good while, and L and Y/N seemed to have made good progress with their speculations. It was late into the night by the time Y/N realized how long it had been and finally glanced at a clock. 10:12 PM, the clock had read. Y/N spoke up again, as there had been a moment of silence.

”Oh, L, look at the time. I think I should go..” They said, putting their hand on their cheek. L perked up, having been brought back into reality from his thoughts, the wild ones that would linger in his mind until he gave them any attention and then they would pass away and be gone again. L nodded, continuing to thumb his lip and hunch over like his last straw was 38 straws ago.

”Yes, yes, I believe so. I’m sorry for keeping you so late. Please try to get some sleep when you arrive at your residence.” He said, his voice returning to its usual monotone sound. Y/N nodded at him and quickly got to their feet.

Again, they paused in the doorway and glanced back at him. “Bye, L..” They said solemnly, longing to get just one more look at their new fixation.

‘Gosh, Y/N, two days and you have a crush on him already?!’ They thought to themselves. L didn’t know of this, though, and he wouldn’t for a long, long time. They waved to him, and he reluctantly waved back. They left and began walking down the hall of the hotel, but they had still noticed the odd redness of L’s cheeks when he had waved to Y/N.

They noticed the eerieness of the hotel hallway at that hour. It was almost completely dark, and they were starting to wonder if some sort of Ghostface creature would jump out and ambush them at any moment. When Rem appeared next to them, they almost ascended out of their skin in shock.

”Hwah! You scared me!” They shrieked, maybe a bit too loudly. They weren’t too far away from the room the task force had been in, maybe L would hear them. ‘Crap, crap, crap, crap…!’ They thought, their mind beginning to race. Rem simply chuckled as L began to exit the hotel room and peek his head out to look at Y/N.

”Y/N, are you alright…?” He murmured, a smile creeping up on his lips. Y/N quickly nodded and flicked their wrist dismissively.

”Yeah! Yup! I’m fiiiine!” They quickly spat, smiling awkwardly and rubbing the back of their head. L slowly nodded and retreated back into the hotel room.

”Alright. G’night, Y/N.” He said.

”G’night!” They squealed, before running down the hotel hallway faster than ever. They ran like a little kid running up the basement stairs after turning the lights off, afraid of a monster coming to devour them.

Still satisfied with the varying events of the day, Y/N L/N began the slow trudge back to their home.
