____________________________________________

The summer holiday was coming to an end. You were trying to distract yourself with music but you were still worried about starting classes at a high school you hated.

Your mother wanted what was best for you of course, but that was not what you wanted. Not only that this high school was in another far away city but the subject chosen were so boring. The uniform you had to wear made you lose your appetite.

"I'm not wearing THAT!" you shouted.

Your mother overheard you. She came out of the kitchen frowning at you.

"Now Y/N, we've discussed about this..."

"I know mom, but why can't it be something more exciting? Like magic?" You said while holding the first chapter of your favourite book series "The Good Witch Azura" which you found in the attic while searching through your great grandmother's things.

Your mother rolled her eyes. "Not this again...Can you please be more realistic? It's not funny anymore. There is no such thing as a magic school, so get over it! The school I enrolled you for is highly expensive enough. I had to cancel our summer trip to send you to Reality Check Summer Camp..."

"Oh, mom... NO! You did what?"

"I've spoken to my friend who recommended this school. You will only stay there during summer and you won't have trouble at school anymore when you return."

"As if! If anyone finds out I'll go to a Reality Check Summer Camp they will think I'm crazy for sure. I AM NOT GOING!"

"Don't start with this. It's just as hard for me as it is for you. I'm tied of being called by your teachers because of your weird school experiments. I need to save money for this camp. I'm only buying food from discounts and items from thrift shops; and as for new clothes, you will have to wear what you already have." your mom said, while checking a list with taxes to pay for the end of the month. She let out a soft sigh.

"But I don't want to go to that stupid camp, mom... I'm not crazy!"

"You need to make some friends. If you keep staying stuck in this fantasy world you created, no wonder you haven't made any friends till now. Not even Becca and Chung haven't stopped by in a very long time."

You suddenly felt strong sadness. "Those weren't real friends."

This was a sensitive subject. You had developed some trust issues after your two best friends stopped visiting you after they got convinced by other people that you are a weirdo who has imaginary friends and sees ghosts and unicorns.

Reading fantasy books was bringing you joy. Re-reading "The Good Witch Azura" was something you loved doing.

You realized that going to that new school in Gravesfield was inevitable so you got used to the idea that you would be miserable until you graduate.

"I'm back!" your mom said as she returned from the store. "We're having noodle soup tonight. I found a few at discount."

You nodded and grabbed your book to re-read it again. "If only this magic world was real."

You fell asleep holding the book, knowing that soon you will have to pack for summer camp.

Summer never felt so miserable. It was already time for you to go to go to camp. Your bags were ready outside. The bus was going to arrive any minute. Your mom gave you one last hug and you told her to get inside the house because you hated good-byes.

"One more thing. Throw away that book you are holding! Don't forget why I'm sending you to this camp in the first place. This is only for your own good. You will thank me later."

You looked at your book one last time and threw it away in the trash can. Your mother had no idea that you took photos of every page to keep as a memory, desperate not to part with it.

The bus could be seen at a distance so you put on your backpack and grabbed your luggage. Suddenly, an owl appeared and snatched the book you threw in the trash. You rushed after it, dragging the luggage after you, forgetting about the summer camp bus.

"That owl sure is fast... and strong to lift that book!" you said loudly while trying to catch your breath.

The owl went towards an old rundown house and you followed without caring about trespassing. You wanted that book back, despite throwing it in the trash earlier. That book held your hopes and dreams, albeit impossible. Still, it was nice to have those thoughts, and you couldn't bear to part with the real thing, if there was still a chance of getting it back.

The moment you entered through the opened chipped and scratched door, you saw the owl flying and disappearing through a portal.

You didn't have time to stop and rushed right through it, ending up into a forest, where you tripped and fell flat on your face. You've never seen that place before. The birds were chirping and the weather was a bit cooler than before because it had rained recently. You were in a small clearing in a seemingly endless maze of trees.

"Where did you come from?" a girl asked and you quickly looked up.

"Are you alright?" she asked as she put on her hoodie over her dyed green hair and turned around before you could answer.

"Yes, I am fine!" you shouted, still panicky. "Nothing broken!"

You looked behind you and shouted: "The portal is gone! Now what?"

You realized that the only way to get out of that forest was to follow the green haired girl.

Chapter 2: Chapter 2 - My new home

Chapter Text

You chased after the green haired hooded girl who kept running faster and faster from you.

"Quit following me !" she shouted scared as she kept turning her head around to see if you were still behind her.

"I want to find my book, that's all ! An owl stole it from me !" you shouted back.

The girl stopped, turned around and did some hand gestures. Her palms started glowing magenta color. She started forming some sort of slime monster twice your height. You stopped shocked and managed to jump out of the way.

"I'm sorry but turn around and go back from where you came from !" the green haired girl shouted as she ordered the slime monster to chase after you for one more minute before she vanished. The monster followed her shortly after.

You were hiding scared in some bushes. "What was that thing? She was using magic ! I wasn't imagining it ! Magic does exist !"

Your fear went away quickly and got replaced by excitement. "I have to see where they are going..."

But suddenly, you noticed the owl flying in your direction, without the book. It turned around, wanting you to chase after it. You fell in the trap and chased it while screaming "Hey ! You get back here ! What did you do to my book?"

You stopped to look around. The beautiful forest disappeared and you ended up in a junk yard where you saw a middle aged woman searching for various junk to steal.

The owl landed on the woman's shoulder. Apparently, she was too busy collecting junk to even notice you.

"There you were, Owlbert ! Did you manage to find more books of this kind? oh...and I see that you brought me the owner of this book, which was clearly not something I instructed you to do."

"Give me the book back !" you shouted angrily. You were usually a chill person but you've already been through a lot and getting your things stolen was the last straw.

"Oh, you mean this old thing?" the woman asked. "I can trade you for it." she said as she showed you a bunch of worthless junk.

"No, thanks. You can keep it. My book, please !"

"Fine, fine... here you go." the woman said, throwing the book back at you.

The woman whispered something to the owl. * Next time when you steal, be sure not to get seen.*

"So, allow me to make the introduction: I am Eda, the owl lady and this is my friend, Owlbert. Welcome to the Boiling Isles !"

You raised an eyebrow since you didn't ask or cared. All you wanted was to go home and forget this ever happened. You didn't quite figure out how to do that though. There must be a portal in the woods somewhere.

"Well?" asked Eda. "Do you have a name you would like to share?"

"Well, it's Y/N (your name) but it's not something you would remember anyway."

"Are you kidding, kiddo? That's a really interesting name. Haven't heard that one before. You aren't from around here, are you?"

"Don't call me that."

"Call you what?" Eda asked.

"Kiddo."

"Alright, fine. So anyway, kiddo..." you rolled your eyes. "Where exactly are you from?"

"Well if you must know I'm from ...* city you live in* but I don't like it there."

"Oh, really? Why not?" Eda asked interested.

"Why? Because it's boring ! I have no friends there. I mean I did, but they all left because they found me too weird because I'm interested in magic and fairytales."

"What's so weird about liking magic?" Eda asked. "I use it all the time. I am feared for some other reason which is personal." Eda said as she gathered a pile of garbage and pointed her finger at it. A yellow glow came out and the pile of garbage caught fire.

Your jaw dropped. "I can't believe it ! You can use magic too ?!?" you asked amazed and went closer. You started to ask many questions about how she did that and that you wanted her to teach you how.

"Oh, hold on...hold on...Not so fast ! I thought you have magic ability." said Eda confused.

"I don't ! I wanted to learn but everyone I know says magic doesn't exist !"

"Doesn't exist? Wow *whistles*, they sure need to get out more."

"Then you can teach me? " you asked excited. "I saw another girl who could form monsters out of mud."

"Oh, an abomination? Was she young? Must be a a student from the Abomination coven."

"The what?" you asked.

"There are different covens you can choose from at the Hexside School of Magic and Demonics. The Abomination coven is one of the main nine. You can only choose one however and I...why are you looking at me like that?" Eda asked as she saw your face full of excitment.

"I want to study there too ! Take me there ! Pleaseee....."

"See? You are really acting like a kiddo. You have to pass the entrance exam to get in there."

"Can you help me pass that exam?"

"Me? Help you? *laughs* Come here, kiddo ! Let's go home first. You need some rest. "

"But I can't find the portal I came out of. It was in the forest but it was gone once I tried to return."

"Hmm...then there is a problem. I can only open smaller portals but none took to the human world." Eda said.

You started to panic. "Wait, don't get emotional, I'll figure something out. You can live at my place until then." said Eda in an optimistic tone.

It was getting dark soon so Eda and you started to walk fast towards her home. You both stopped in front of a house made of wood.

"Here we are ! This is the Owl House. Make yourself at home."

Chapter 3: First spell, new friends

Chapter Text

You approached Eda's home made of wood and got frightened by an owl's head.

"Oh, don't be alarmed. That's Hooty*,." Eda said, smiling. "He's the guardian of the house."

You wanted to say hello but Hooty's neck started to stretch so much that you started following his neck around the house until you tripped over it. You realized that he had no body.

"This is truly magic," you whispered to yourself amazed.

"You'll get used to him," said Eda, making the never mind hand gesture. "Let's eat. I'm starving."

"You can say that again..." you whispered.

"I heard that." said Eda. "When was the last time you ate?"

"This morning. I ate breakfast very early because I didn't want to miss the bus and I had a lot of heavy luggage to carry."

"Eh-hm! Over here! Some attention, please!" said King, lifting a cup of some weird looking drink that had smoke coming out of it. The drink was in a crystal glass and it smelled like chocolate and plums. You really wanted to try it.

"A toast to our new house member! Now, if you would like to say a few words before dinner."

You went near the table and lifted your glass. "Um... hello, everyone. I'm not good at giving a speech. Thanks for letting me stay here. I don't have many friends back home, since they find me weird because I believe in magic. You guys are the only friends I have right now."

"Awww..." said Eda. King was wiping some tears from his eyes and Hooty cheered.

You felt embarrassed and sat down at the table just to realize there was no food.

"Oh, right. I'll go make something to eat." Eda said. She took a basket of some vegetables and a pumpkin and made them levitate in a cauldron. She used her magic to light up the fire. That made your eyes grow with excitement. Using her magic, she mashed the vegetables and summoned water and spices.

"Soup coming right up." Eda said smiling.

"Teach me magic! Please!" you begged Eda.

"That again? You have a long way to go, kiddo. Tell you what, take some notes for now and I'll see what you can do later."

Tossing the cauldron onto the table effortlessly, you see King's eyes widen in delight, and you can't blame him. You all begin to eat. The soup was surprisingly very delicious. Either that or you were very hungry.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________

"You can sleep here for tonight. I'll see what I can do about the portal thing tomorrow." Eda said yawning while showing you a crowded small room.

"Need to clean that tomorrow too." Eda said to herself, as you walk in.

"Don't forget to show me magic tomorrow too," you said while taking out a rolled sleeping bag from your backpack.

"Oh, I shouldn't promise too many things for tomorrow. I'll pass out."

"But you promised me that you would..."

"Yeah, yeah..." she said and left.
______________________________________________________

That night, the green haired girl appeared in your dream. She was wearing her cloak but you could still see her blushing face for a short while.

You tried to reach her but she kept running away. Always looking back, to see if you were still following. She stopped and waited, until you figured out that she wanted you to follow her.

"Stop following me!" she yelled but her hand gesture was calling you to follow her.

"Make up your mind! Do you want me to stop or follow?"

You woke up after your reply drowsily. That was a strange dream. Fortunately, you manage to fall back in your sleeping bag, and have a dreamless night, as the sun slowly starts to rise/
______________________________________________________

It was morning. You got up before everyone else and didn't know what to do with your free time. You rolled back your sleeping bag and started to do some cleaning by yourself.

An hour has passed and still: King was sleeping while holding a toy bunny. Eda was snoring in her room. Hooty was sound asleep.

You started to check out Eda's spell books. "Let's see if I can find anything that will help me use magic. Here it is! 'The summoning spell.' This shouldn't be too hard. I'll just read the instructions carefully," you said while holding the heavy large book.

"I'll summon that chair first," and you started reading the instructions.

"'Chair, I summon you! Come to me!'...." nothing happened. "'Come!'" Nothing still. "Seriously? What do I have to do to make an object obey?! I demand that you come here!" and you closed your eyes to concentrate.

Suddenly, the chair started to shake. You opened your eyes and managed to jump out of the way. The chair got lifted from its place and broke a nearby window. It fell outside, crashing and breaking on the ground. The noise woke up the whole house.

"Oops." you said while closing back the book and putting it back.

"What happened here?" asked Eda still sleepy.

"I can explain... I found this interesting book and I started to read it..."

Eda gasped. "Oh, no no no. This spell book is off limits. It contains dangerous spells that can get you killed."

"I didn't use a dangerous one. I tried summoning a chair."

"Apparently it worked."

"Not really. It turned out bad. I should choose a smaller object next time."

"Or not use magic at all." said Eda while using her magic to repair the broken window. "Maybe you should try something easier." said Eda and drew a symbol in the air to create light.

"Whoa... how did you do that?" you asked Eda. For the rest of day, you couldn't think of anything else. Every spare second you and her had was used up by the light spell - so much so that your eyes no longer were blinded by the light (not instantly, at least). Showing you that gesture so many times made the Owl Lady pass out. You managed to record her on your phone the last time before she lost consciousness. Too bad it had a broken screen, but you could still see it.

You and King went outside for a walk.

"How can she do that?" you asked King after practicing for hours.

"Eda is a very powerful witch."

"I recorded her before she passed out. I'll take a closer look."

Eda did her light spell, as usual. You didn't understand how that was done. You paused the video exactly when Eda was drawing a circle in the air. A slightly glitchy symbol appeared on the screen inside that circle.

"Look, King! A symbol." you said and placed a piece of paper on top of your phone screen, took out a pen and copied the symbol, fixing the glitched edges to make the symbol a perfect circle. The moment you touched the paper, it created an orb of light.

"It worked!!! My first spell!!" you cheered and rushed towards the Owl House to show Eda.

On your way back, you decided to pass by the magic school, in case you would see the green hair girl again. She was easy to find. Apparently she's been reading a book in the school yard. You had no access to the school. Only students and teachers were allowed inside.

The girl was wearing the cloak, just like in your dream.

You went closer to the fence and asked suddenly, "What are you reading there?"

She lifted her face startled, but frowned, annoyed after seeing you.

"You wouldn't know or care."

"It looks like the book I have."

She looked at you, surprised for a second, until some friends of hers arrived and she left with them.

"Does she want me to stop or follow?" you asked yourself.

"Y/N, what are you looking at?" asked King who finally caught up to you.

"Oh, I want to go to this magic school so badly!"

"Ha! It's not that easy. You have to pass the Hexside entrance exam and knowing just one spell is not enough. But I do congratulate you for being so ambitious, because I know for a fact Eda will not--." said King, before being cut off. You lifted him under your arm and ran off before he could continue. You ran back to the Owl House.

"I need to learn more spells!... and Eda is the only one who can help me."

Chapter 4: Abomination

Chapter Text

You spent the following days begging Eda to teach you more spells. She kept refusing and that nearly made you lose hope. All Eda did was showing you how to collect garbage thrown by humans.

You learned from King that Eda moved into the Owl House in order to escape the guards, due to constantly breaking the law.

You felt like an outcast for a while too since humans were not really liked by many in the Boiling Isles. But decided to do your best and prove everyone wrong. You will pass the exam and you will enter that school.

The green haired girl kept invading your dreams without permission. The only way to see her again was to go to that school. You wanted to learn magic, but wanting to know this mysterious girl better was another challenge for you.

"I learned a spell already. I just need to keep using Eda's spell books and practice until I get few more spells right. Then I need to pass that exam for the Magic School. Just imagine the look on everyone's face back home after seeing my graduation diploma. All went to boring schools. Well after seeing that such a school exist in Boiling Isles, they won't laugh at me anymore. "

You snatched two of Eda's spell books and rushed outside.

"Where are you going ?" Hooty asked.

"Oh, just going outside for a walk. I won't be long."

But Hooty's long neck and endless body followed you everywhere without you noticing.

As you reached into the forest where the portal to your home was, you took out the spell book that you used before. The moment you opened it you realized that Eda tricked you. The book cover was similar but the content of the book was to some cook book.

"I've been tricked ! This can't be ! What am I supposed to do with this?" you said as you threw away the book into a bush, hitting Hooty on the head. You heard a cry and asked who's there but there was no reply.

You rushed to a different location holding the remaining spell book.

"If this is fake too, Eda's going to have an ear full."

You carefully checked every word until you bumped into someone.

"Sorry, are you alright?" you asked, helping the girl up.

You looked at the girl's robes. You've seen those before. The perky green haired girl was wearing it too. That was a magic school uniform!

You looked around and your eyes stopped on a cauldron which which contained some purple slimy thing.

"Are you a witch?" you asked without thinking twice.

"I sure am. I can see that you are too. She said while pointing at your spell book."

"Oh this...I borrowed it." you giggled embarrassed.

"My name is Y/N (your name) and I live near by but far away at the same time, in the human world" you said.

"Oh, I'm so excited to see a real human. You sure act mysterious. My name is Willow Park. Haven't seen you signing up for the exam. Aren't you participating?"

"Of course I am...I just need to practice."

"We can practice together. As long as you don't laugh at me. My abomination isn't quite good."

"Your what?" you asked as Willow took away the lid of the pot.

Something was coming out. It got bigger and bigger. It looked like a purple slime monster. You backed away behind a tree. You couldn't believe it. That monster was real ! You took out your phone to take some photos of it

"What in the world is that?" Someone asked from behind.

You turned around and saw the green haired girl, along with some 3 eyed arrogant girl with magenta hair color.

"This, you ask? This is a mobile phone which you use to communicate with others, having multiple applications and..."

"She wasn't talking about your garbage. Do you think the world is all about you?" said the 3 eyed girl doing the eye roll.

" I was talking about this pathetic lousy excuse for an abomination. " the green hair girl said.

"That's enough, Amity ! Just because mine isn't as good as yours it gives you no right to criticize my work ! " Willow shouted upset.

"With that so called work you will be lucky if the professor even bothers looking at it. "

"What are you starring at, freak? " the 3 eyed girl asked you.

"I think you are starring more than me. You have more eyes." you answered.

"Oh, is THAT supposed to be a joke?"

"Boscha, give it a rest. We have things to do." Willow replied.

Amity blushed after looking in your direction.

"Things like what? Humiliating yourselves?" asked Boscha laughing evilly.

"Get lost ! No one invited you two here !" you yelled.

"How annoying." Boscha said.

Amity brought her own abomination, which you didn't want to see again.

"This is how it supposed to look like. Yours just looks creepy." Amity said.

But before any of you could reply, Willow's abomination exploded, throwing purple slime all over you.

Boscha started to scream. Amity wiped her face off, clearly upset.

"My hair ! I can't go anywhere looking like this ! I must run home to wash it ! " Boscha cried.

"It's not too much of a difference. You look as ugly as before." you replied, making Willow laugh. Then you looked at Amity and winked " "Purple suits you better."

"Why you..." said Boscha angered but Amity 's abomination lifted both of them and left before she could finish her insults." Amity's red embarrassed face got covered by her hoodie.

"Ignore them. They are rich and popular students at school. No wonder they act like that. The truth is, my abomination is really bad. Now I have no abomination to present for the exam."

You felt bad for Willow.

"I have an idea that can help you pass the exam. I'll become your abomination. "

Chapter 5: My first day at school

Chapter Text

Willow could use plants magic better than anyone, yet you found out that her parents signed her up for the Abomination class, which Willow disliked.

"I hate getting bad grades ! However, before I have to go disappoint my teacher... What did you mean when you said that you will be my abomination?"

"You have no abomination to show, right? I can pretend to be one." you replied.

"Pretend? Our professor won't get fooled by that." Willow said worried. "The school is very strict about it's rules. You cannot enter without a uniform and everyone will notice that you are a new student.

"Relax! I'm good at being sneaky. I'll hide in your pot covered in... purple slime? You get a good grade, I check out the school and I leave."

"Well...I guess we could try...BUT IF I GET CAUGHT...."

"You won't get caught! I'll take the blame; it'll be on me if that happens." you said.
_________________________________________________

You followed Willow to the magic school and asked her to cover you in that purple slime before entering. You hid behind some plants and entered the school. Then remained hidden inside a pot in the pot on the hallway while Willow was getting her books from a locker for her next class.

A boy from the illusion coven named Gus was reading a magazine made by humans. Probably something he bought from Eda. He said hello to Willow and wondered why humans would wear braces.

You started to comment something about that inside the pot and Gus overheard you.

"Who said that?"

"Oh, you caught me." Willow said. "I'll show you something but this will have to be our secret."

Willow removed the lid and Gus looked inside. "Oh, hello." you responded.

"Wow ! I can't believe it ! Is this a real lie human?" shouted Gus.

"Shhh! Be quiet !" Willow said while covering Gus' mouth.

She explained to him how you two became friends. Gue wanted to become your friend too so you gladly accepted.

"Oh, we don't want to be late !" said Willow and pushed the cart with your pot inside the classroom.
_____________________________________________

The professor entered and started asking the students to show their abominations. Amity arrived a bit late and was asked to go first for being tardy.

"I'm sorry, professor. I had to rush home to wash my clothes."

"Well you could've done that some other time, not before my class. Let's see what you can do."

Amity went in front of the class and dragged a cart that had a pot inside it.

"Abomination, rise !"

The purple slime monster that you hated came out."

"Impressive. You always had the best marks. However, being tardy, you will only get an A, not an A+. Otherwise, other students might thing it's ok to be tardy without any consequences.

Amity was shocked and went back to her desk very upset. She looked around at her students, analyzing who else might get an A+ and no one came to mind. "I'm safe for now. The best they can get is an A."

You lifted the pot lid to look at Amity. How could someone so pretty be so full of herself. You knew she was tardy because of the purple slime but you were happy that she got a point removed from her grade. You wanted Willow to get an A+ so did everything you could to look like an authentic abomination.

It was Willow's turn. She nervously brought her cart in front of the classroom. Amity looked pleased. "This is going to be embarrassing."

Willow removed the lif from the pot and said "Abomination, rise !"

You came out all covered in purple slime and looked as monsterly as possible.

"Wow, I'm impressed miss Willow ! This will get an A+. Well done !"

Amity remained shocked.

After class was over, Amity blocked Willow's way.

"I don't know what you did but your abomination failed last time. How did you succeed with this one?"

"Well, after the humiliating encounter with you, I struggled and exercised harder until it came out right."

"I have the best grades in class and no one will change that. Got it, Willow? That abomination looked kind of familiar. I'll keep my eyes on you." Amity said walking backwards and bumping into Gus.

Willow looked worried at Gus and removed the pot lid again so you could get out. "I think she started to suspect that something is wrong. If I'm find out I will fail the exam."

"Everything will be fine. I'll just have to keep a low profile. "

Gus then started to explain to you about the different covens that school had and that you could only choose one.

"So Amity and I are in the Abomination coven - magenta color, Gus is in the Illusions coven -light blue color." Willow explained. "That 3 eyed evil girl you met earlier, Boscha, is in Potions coven - yellow color.

"Yeah and green is for Plant, brown for Construction, purple for Oracle, red for bard, dark blue for Healing, orange for Beast keeping and the best of them all: Emperor's coven - gold." said Gus.

"You talk fast. I need to take notes. All sound cool though." you said.

"You can only choose one, however." said Gus.

"Yeah and you might end up choosing the wrong one, like I did." said Willow saddened.

"You need to pass the exam and see at which you best excel. " said Gus. "No matter how cool the other covens sound like, you only get one."

Meanwhile, back home Eda was looking for you everywhere. Hooty had a bump n the head which hurt more after Eda slammed the door into the wall.

"Hey, that hurts !" it shouted.

"I'm looking for Y/N. What's with that bump?"

"You just hit my head just now. I also got hit by a book this morning after following Y/N through the forest."

"Tell me which way Y/N went !"

After Hooty told Eda the directions, Eda gasped. "Oh no, but the magic school is in that direction...I must stop Y/N before it's too late !"

Chapter 6: Banned

Chapter Text

Amity was furious after she lost to Willow at her best subject. The teacher even took away her top student badge and handed it to Willow in front of Amity's face.

During lunch break, Willow brought the cauldron in which you were hiding and left it near the table. Gus and her started to share their food with you. However, Amity saw and jumped up the table:

"I SAW THAT ! Abominations DON'T eat !" she yelled as she grabbed you by the collar and tried pulling you out of the cauldron.

The other students gazed at the event. The teacher arrived: "Young lady, I figured that you would get jealous but this is just sad ! You will receive detention !"

"No...wait but this....not an abomination." said Amity .

"Go, now !" frowned the teacher.

After a while, Amity returned with the principal. Willow and Gus gasped.

"I heard from Miss Blight about this human like abomination and I came to see it for me self." the principal said as he started giving you various commands, which you had to obey.

The principal ordered you to go lay down on a science table to analyze you but then he took a scalpel to make some cuts into your body for experiments.

You jumped off the table and started running away before he could touch you. Willow ran away with you.

"They're getting away !" shouted Amity.

"They won't get far. You were right, Amity. That is not a real abomination. "

Amity, the teacher and other students started chasing you, along with the school security.

"This is all my fault, Willow. I just wanted to know how it feels like to go to a real magic school." you said, feeling guilty.

"So, how do you like it then?" asked Willow.

"It's very cool actually !

"Great ! Now we better get out of here before the principal seals us in." It was too late however. Red light seals blocked the school doors and the principal arrived with an army of abominations.

Meanwhile, Eda reached the school and started looking into classrooms after you, through the windows.

"I can't believe Y/N would come here on free will. School sucks."

"Keep looking. Y/n has to be around here somewhere. " said King.

Willow and you were hiding from the abominations.

"What are we going to do now? I'm not that great at magic." Willow said.

"But you are a great witch and someone once told me that a great witch is resourceful." you said as you took out random items you had in your pocket.

"A seed ! It's great that you had it on you !" Willow said happy as she took the seed in her palm to say a few magic spells.

A huge dangerous plant grew at full speed from the seed and destroyed the abominations one after another until none were left standing. The plant also attacked the principal and glued him to the ceiling.

"Remarkable !" he spoke amazed after seeing the strong plant magic Willow could do.

The seal from the door broke and Willow took your hand to help you escape the school. The exit got blocked by Amity, who was furiously invoking a new army of abominations.

"You are not going anywhere ! I want my badge ! Abominations, attack !"

Willow used her plant magic to save you and get you outside to safety while she remained inside the school.

"I can't save you now, Willow; but I know someone who can!" you said as you rushed back to the Owl House to find Eda.

Eda was shocked after you started hugging her out of nowhere and asking her for help. Before Eda could do anything, Willow and Gus followed you.

"The principal was so impressed by my plant work that I got switched to the Plant magic track." she said proudly as she showed you her new green school uniform.

"That is great ! " you said hugging her. "Can't wait to get back there."

"About that...you were banned." said Gus.

"Oh...well I have a great teacher already." you said pointing at Eda.

Eda was impressed by that statement. " That's right. Y/N is my student. Oh, look. Your first wanted poster. Good job, kiddo. Looks like I taught you something after all. "

"Let's all go inside to celebrate with some hot tea and cookies Eda made." you said happily.

" I didn't make any tea and cookies." Eda said with one eyebrow raised.

"Well you will have that opportunity now. We are celebrating !" you shouted and made everyone cheer.

"Well you party while I do all the work. Not fair." said Eda.

"Those are Y/N's new friends. Let's help her with the party." said King.

"Yeah, you're right. Y/N has still a lot to learn but today was a great success. Come inside ! Tea and cookies for everyone !"

Chapter 7: The Curse

Chapter Text

Eda was very impressed by your magic skills.

"Wow, kiddo. I knew you were bright but I'm surprised that you got the lighting spell right in such a short time. I'm very happy to have such a bright student." said Eda, holding her cup of tea before bed, while dressed with a bath robe and home slippers.

Willow and Gus went home few hours ago. Eda was all exhausted and wanted some peace and quiet but you kept asking to teach you more spells, which she obviously refused.

"Look, I'm tired. I've been slaving all day in the kitchen to serve your friends. Now I know that you are excited and a fast learner but you still need a lot of practice. So you can practice what you learned for now and we can see what we can do about other spells later. Have some patience." Eda said yawning. King was already sound asleep in a tiny bed inside a drawer.

"Patience?!?" you suddenly yelled, waking up the whole house. "Sorry..." you whispered. "I'll never pass that entrance exam if I don't hurry !" you whispered in a panicked tone.

"They need bright students like you. They will always find a way to accept bright talented students. After all, the covens compete with one another so the teachers responsible for each coven will want to have the best students. At the end of the year, the coven with the most achievements wins a medal or something." Eda said falling asleep but your curiosity woke her up.

"and then what?"

"oh, and then...the teachers have something to brag about."

"Gus said that I have to choose just one coven but there are so many cool ones I'd like to try."

"well...I don't know what you mean by cool..."

"oh, cool means great."

"oh, alright - so, I was once like you. I refused to choose just one coven, I wanted to be good at everything. So I rebelled out and went my own way." Eda fell asleep.

"What do you mean?" you asked, shaking Eda to wake back up.

"Listen, kid...*sighs* you are forced to choose just one coven and your magic gets sealed off. I do not belong to a coven and this way I managed to keep all my powers, making me the most powerful witch from the Isles. That's mostly why you see wanted posters of me everywhere."

Your face expressed both shock and amazement. "I won't choose a coven then either. I want to be just as powerful as you."

That made Eda laugh. "You keep practicing on that then. I'm heading to bed. Good night." and she left and locked the door to be sure you don't follow her to ask other questions.
______________________________________
Back home, Amity couldn't sleep either. She was upset about losing to Willow and decided to start training seriously. She had to be the best in order to get back the top student badge. She couldn't really tell why Willow's abomination looked so familiar. You were all covered in slime so it was hard for her to tell that it was you.

Amity looked at her Witch story book from her desk and remembered you saying having a similar one. She decided to start investigating and find out who you were and where you came from. The item you were holding while talking to Willow wasn't from that area. Amity has never seen a cell phone before. Your clothes looked different and the way you kept chasing after her and ran into you everywhere.

"Who are you? I have to know." Amity said while trying to go to sleep.
______________________________________
You went to your room where King was also sleeping in the drawer but you couldn't sleep at all, thinking about what Eda said. How exciting it would be to have access to all the covens, without a witch's magic to be sealed. That would make them very powerful and hard to control. No wonder the school had strict rules. Willow got to switch her coven, so that was possible since she was more talented in plant magic than creating abominations.

But Amity, the green hair girl, she was very powerful indeed and she clearly could do more than just creating abominations since you need to know many spells to pass the exam.

"Wait a minute...this makes no sense. Why learn so many spells if our magic gets sealed after? This is so stupid..."

Suddenly, you heard objects breaking in Eda's room. King woke up startled.

"Who...what was that?"

"I don't know but we better investigate."

You saw the shadow of a monster and you ran away screaming but King ran faster and screamed louder than you and you both rushed into Eda's room and locked the door. Whatever it was, it started scratching the door. You lost your shoe and a note got stuck to your foot.

"It's a monster !" you said scared.

"What is that?" asked King as he removed the torn note and compared it to the other half found in Eda's room on the ground.

"An elixir a day keeps the curse at bay." read King out loud and gasped as he looked at you in shock.

"Curse? What are you talking about?" you asked.

"That's not a monster...that's..."

Suddenly, the creature broke the door and got inside before King could finish.

The creature came closer to you and now you could see it clear near the candle light.

"EDA???"

Chapter 8: The antidote

Chapter Text

The one in front of you didn't really look like Eda anymore and was about to attack you.

"Watch out ! Get out of the way !" King shouted and you jumped to the side. She didn't look like she was recognizing you.

You grabbed King and ran away with him under your arm. You his inside a closet.

"She didn't drink her elixir!" whispered King.

"What are you talking about?"

"Ive been living with Eda for the past 8 years now and saw her drinking this elixir. She's been drinking it all the time but I thought that is what was giving her magic abilities. I only borrowed it to give some to you in the morning, since you need all the help you can get to pass that entrance exam."

"You stole it?" you asked shocked.

"Borrowed it !" said King feeling guilty and shivering.

"Well give it back and let's hope she comes back to normal!"

"I would but i dropped the bottle when she attacked me. It broke..."

"Oh, man ! Now what? Any ideas?" you asked.

"We should try sneaking out of the house, tell Hooty to lock it tightly and not let Eda out and...I guess we should go to the market to buy more." said King.

"Lovely !" you said sarcastically. "Presuming that we would get out of this house alive - how are we going to buy one elixir without money."

"Oh, they also do trading there. We should find something to trade for it." said King.

"Fine then ! Let's see where Eda is right now."

You opened the closet door, which obviously made a squeaky sound. You heard noises coming from Eda's room which suddenly stopped. She noticed you.

You grabbed King and rushed towards the door. You heard Eda running after you.

"Hooty ! Lock the door behind us and don't let Eda out !"

You barely made it out and heard Eda scratching the door to break free.

"Poor, Hooty ! We don't have enough time ! Come on !" you said as you rushed to the market and tried to find your way in the dark.

"The light magic ! Use it !" said King.

"That would give us away. Don't worry, I know the way." However, you later did have to stop to use light magic after you tripped over a twig and fell in a bush.

You finally arrived at the market Mr Elixir but no one was there.

"It's barely 4 AM." said King looking at the market's clock.

"We open at 6." was written on the stand where they would sell elixirs.

"No time !" you shouted and started to knock in the window until someone opened.

"Can't you read the sign? We open at 6! Don't you sleep?" said the store owner all cranky.

Both you and King rushed to explain what elixir you needed.

"Oh, I ran out of those. A witch kept buying a bottle every week. I need to order more."

After seeing your panicked faces, the store owner told you that there might be someone else who still has them.

"There is a guy named Grimm Hammer who has a stand at the Night Market. He has open at this hour so you should try your luck there. Oh, and next time know that I open business at 6!" he said and shut the window in your faces.

"Let's hurry !" said King.

You arrived at Grimm Hammer's market and asked for a bottle of elixir.

"Cash or trade?" he asked.

"Trade !" King shouted and looked at you.

You took off your favorite hoodie which had magic symbols on it and handed it to Grimm who started analyzing it.

"It's in good condition. " said King who knew how to bargain.

"Fine. Here's your elixir."

You rushed back home and found the door broken and Hooty injured on the ground.

"Oh, no !" you shouted and rushed to aid Hooty.

"I'll look after Hooty. You go find Eda before she causes trouble ! Throw the elixir at her face if you can't get close enough. You are our only hope !"

You rushed outside and decided to call Eda's name. You poured some elixir in a mug and kept it tight in your hand, ready to sprinkle it on Eda.

You put the mug down on the ground and hid behind a bush. You heard Eda running at full speed at you so you jumped out of the way while Eda's clothes got stuck in the bush. You picked up the mug and threw it at Eda's face who started to shake it off from her face. You grabbed the bottle and poured it into her mouth.

She struggled a bit more and returned back to normal.

"Wha? How did I end up in this mess? Kiddo, get me out of here !"

"You have to hurry home ! Hooty is injured !"

"Injured? What happened?"

"I'll explain on the way."
___________________________________________________
King put on about 50 band aids on Hooty since it has an infinite body.

"Eda ! Thank goodness you are back ! I'm running out of band aids !"

"Step aside ! I'll handle it." she said and she brew a potion that healed Hooty instantly.

"Too bad I can't brew the elixir I need every day. No one tells me the ingredients." said Eda frowning.

"You will have to buy a new one tomorrow. I had to use all of it on you to bring you back to normal." you said as you went to sit by the fire.

"Where is your hoodie, kiddo?"

"Oh, I had to get that elixir somehow so I went to trade it for it."

"You traded it?" said Eda emotional.

"It's my fault !" King said crying. "I just wanted to help Y/N pass that entrance exam and thought that elixir would give you magical ability ! I shouldn't have taken it."

"Sigh...guys, come and sit down for a minute. You see, I haven't been truly honest with you guys. What you saw earlier wasn't my true self. That is the curse put on me by my sister Lilith. Let's say we didn't really get along. I found out there are elixirs that can stop the transformation. So in order to not transform into that monster, I need to drink this elixir every day. I drank a full bottle today so I should be fine tomorrow."

"That must be hard for you, Eda." you said, serving everyone with hot tea.

"I got used to it. I just need to find what the secret ingredients are so I can brew my own." said Eda sipping tea.

"We'll find those together ! Right, guys?" you said full of optimism.

It was morning. You all went to bed however since you didn't get to sleep all night.
_____________________________________________________
Back at the market, Grimm Hammer was about to close his shop since he was only open during the night. Your hoodie was on a clothing hanger and he picked it up along with other merch to take them inside.

"Where did you get that from?" a girl's voice could be heard, making Grimm turn around to see Amity.

"I got this as a trade. If you want it, you have to trade something for it or give me money." he said with a sly voice.

"Fine, take those coins." said Amity. "I'm in a hurry."

"So am I. That is from the human world so it's more expensive."

Amity rolled her eyes. "Fine ! Just one more coin and that's it !"

"Wonderful. Wise girl. Here you go." he said and closed the shop immediately after.

Amity took a good look at the hoodie. "The human world, hm? I knew it ! Y/N is a human after all." Then covered herself with the cloak and disappeared into the wilderness.

Chapter 9: The Covention

Chapter Text

You went with Eda to help sale old junk that she found. There were no customers or market stalls around. You and King were getting bored.

"I have a bad feeling about this. Something bad is happening today." said Eda frowning.

"Something amazing is happening today !" shouted Gus who came along with Willow holding a poster.

"It's the annual Covention at the Convention Center where witch students get to see the covens before getting placed into one. There will also be a mystery guest this year !"

Your boredom went away in a second and jumped excited from behind the counter to read the poster again. Finally something interesting was happening. For few days now you were just doing chores for Eda and begging her without result to teach you more magic spells.

King and you desperately begged Eda to allow you to go there but she refused each time.

"I've never joined a coven for a reason. It looks like a fun club for witches at first glance but you will also be given away your magical independence to be part of a crooked system. "

You started reading from your story book out loud until Eda agreed to go along to the Covention. Many cool interesting stands were advertising their coven.

Eda arrived wearing a disguise, saying that she might get arrested because she refused to choose just one coven for her magic ability. "Witches have their magic restricted for the specific coven they join. Without a coven, I have the strongest magic"

Willow and Gus started to tell you about each coven again, until Eda returned from the crowd.

"Oh, no. Guess who the mystery guest is ! My sister ! They sure ran out of ideas bringing just about anyone here these days; and she's the leader of the Emperor's coven too. Show off !"

"Aren't you happy to see your sister?" you asked surprised. Eda rolled her eyes.

"You know nothing, kiddo. Go listen to her speech and be amazed." she said ironically.

You went close to the stage where Eda's sister was. She looked beautiful in her dark long robes and long straight navy styled hair that gave her a noble look. She looked way younger than Eda, despite being 2 years older than her.

Eda arrived next to you and kept yawning during Lilith's speech about her goal of enforcing the emperor's will.

"Let's go home." Eda said bored and annoyed.
--------------------------------------------------------------
You followed Eda along, since the speech was not interesting to you but as you were leaving, you bumped into Amity.

"I knew it. You really are human." she looked at you unimpressed with an air of superiority as she took out your hoodie from her bag.

You gasped. "Where did you get that from?"

"Don't take me for a fool, Y/N. I don't know what you're up to but I am keeping my eyes on you ! There is no way you will get accepted at any magic school if you are just an ordinary human with no magic ability !" she said, putting your hoodie back in her bag.

"I CAN use magic!" you shouted and made some students look in your direction. Amity turned red.

"Do you want to drag attention, human?" she whispered embarrassed while putting her hair up.

"Listen, whatever happened at school, I am sorry. It was my idea, so don't be upset on Willow."

"Are you serious right now? You think a cheap apology can repair my reputation? I got humiliated and lied to in front of class by your stupid prank and I lost to Willow. The title of best student was taken away from me and I simply won't allow it !" Amity started to shout without realizing.

"Humans cannot be witches !" Amity shouted and bumped into King on purpose to make him drop his cupcake and immediately started to bully him after he started crying over it.

"Amity, that's enough ! Say what you wish about me but leave King out of this ! He is the king of demons !" you said upset as you approached Amity who's eyes grew wider, not knowing what your intentions were.

"Amity, I challenge you to a witches duel ! If I win, you will have to apologize to King and admit that humans can be witches too !" you said, starring into her eyes but instead of intimidating her, this time Amity's eyes became cheerful. That was exactly what she wanted and you fell into her trap. King tried to stop you but it was too late. Many eye witnesses were there and you couldn't take your words back.

"I gladly accept !" said Amity, arranging her green hair behind one ear. "This will be the easiest duel I'll ever win. Everyone will see that you can't use magic. If I win, you will have to tell everyone that you are not a witch and you will stop training to become one. Forever !"

"I accept !" you said as you sealed your agreement with Amity in an everlasting oath and promised to meet back inside the theater in an hour.

Amity turned around proudly and left as you remained in one place, shocked of what you just did.

"There is no stopping the witches duel now. What are you going to do?" asked King.

"I'm doomed."

Chapter 10: The training begins

Chapter Text

Eda turned around and saw that you and King were not following her. "Now where could those two have gone to? They better not cause me any trouble. I wasn't planning to get arrested today."

"Speaking to yourself I see, dear sister?" Lilith asked. Eda recognized her sister's voice and turned around to face her. "I wasn't planning to see you here at the Covention, considering the fact that you never cared to choose a coven. What changed your mind? What coven did you choose?"

"and here you start with the same billion questions I've been trying to avoid answering." said Eda rolling her eyes. "First of all you won't get to see me here anymore because I am leaving and 2nd, I didn't come alone. I'm here with my student and my demon best friend."

"Your student? So you started teaching magic now? That's good news, as long as it's not breaking any laws." Lilith said, sticking her fingers through her dark long hair. "I have a student of my own. The best student there is."

"Oh, you never stopped bragging." Eda replied bitterly.

"But it is true ! You can ask around. I know that my student is far superior without even meeting your own student." Lilith replied annoyed.

"and I bet that you are just showing off like you always do. My student is a fast learner and I bet she is better than yours."

"Alright then. Prove it ! I'm curious to see the result." Lilith replied. "Oh, there she is ! Amity, could you please step here for a moment?"

Amity arrived and looked at Eda bored. "Such tasteless outfit." Amity thought.

"This is my sister, Eda." Lilith said. That made Amity greet her courteously.

"My name is Amity Blight. Nice to meet you."

"Wait, did you just say Blight?" Eda asked.

"I am sure you've heard this name before. My parents founded Blight Industries and..."

"Yes, everyone knows who you are ! Now about that bet..." Eda said concerned for you, knowing how well trained Amity must be in magic, being a rich girl and all.

"Eda !" you ran towards Eda and stopping after seeing her talking to Lilith and Amity being there. King followed and stopped also after seeing Amity. He didn't want to get bullied again.

"Well, look who it is." said Amity. "I got challenged few minutes ago to a witch's duel by that human over there !" and Amity explained about the bet while Eda and Lilith remained amazed.

"A real human? Here? They don't have magic abilities, due they? Are you saying your student is better?" asked Lilith but didn't dare laugh considering that she didn't really know exactly many things about the humans. What if they possessed other abilities that can help them win? What if this human will try to cheat or be more powerful than Amity. Lilith had to rush to the library to find a book that explains human behavior, anatomy and other things that might determine if they are powerful or not.

"This duel will take place in 2 days as planned and we will discuss more after seeing the results. Good-bye, dear sister !" Lilith said and Amity followed.

"What were you thinking challenging a Blight like that? " Eda asked you in an angry tone. "For your information, Amity's parents are the founders of Blight Industries, a company specialized in selling abomination based accessories for home security, specializing in weaponry. If you want to challenge someone with such a reputation, keep me out of it."

"Please, Eda ! I was angry on her for bullying King ! I didn't really know how serious those duels actually are..." you explained and King backed you up.

"Well then, if you want to win, I really got to teach you more magic."

Your sad face became brighter at the sound of those words. Eda was about to teach you more magic spells !

"Yes ! Eda, thank you so much for helping me..." you said get emotional with teary eyes and hugging Eda at random. King got emotional too and started to cry out loud.

"That's enough ! Now let's get home. We have a lot of work to do and only 2 days time." Eda said going on ahead.

Amity continue to train with Lilith few more hours. She returned home in the evening. "I am starving !" she said to her siblings, entering the house.

"It's about time you returned home. We had dinner an hour ago. I will reheat the leftovers for you." Amity's mother said. "So where were you?"

"I got challenged to a witch's duel !"

Her mother dropped the spoon. "What!?"

"Did I hear right? Witch's duel?" Amity's father asked, entering the room. "Do you need any help?"

"Of course, not ! I got this in the bag ! The one who challenged me can't even use magic."

Everyone started to laugh. "Very brave of that person then." Amity's brother said.

"Very brave indeed." Amity replied while filling her plate with food. "I have to win this !"
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You arrived back home with Eda and King. "Alright ! I am ready to learn new spells ! When will my training begin?

"Oh, there is no way you can learn magic in two days and battle my sister's trained student." said Eda calmly.

"Wait...and you are just going to let me lose? Are you seriously telling me this now?" you asked upset and desperate.

"Nah, I won't let my sister win."

"Then what?!"

Eda turned towards you with a serious face and placed her hands on your shoulders.

"I'm going to help you cheat."

Chapter Text

Lilith spoke proudly as she entered the arena where your duel against Amity was supposed to take place.

"Beloved citizens ! The Emperor's coven proudly presents a demonstration of the certain witch that we seek every year. I present to you: Amity Blight !"

Amity came forward, full of confidence as she received a row of applause. Eda watched from the crowd looking disgusted and started to boo, making Lilith frown.

" *ahm !* and her opponent will be...some human." Lilith concluded as she introduced you in a lack of enthusiasm. The crowd was shocked after hearing that a human was among them.

Eda didn't teach you much magic to be able to stand 2 minutes against Amity who could create an army of abominations with ease to murder you. Eda looked worried too so you rushed to ask for her help. Eda told you to get Amity to step onto the magic traps she had hidden. You disagreed to the idea, saying that cheating is not the right way.

"If you want to win, kiddo - you will have to take a few risks."

The signal announced the beginning of the battle. You kept trying to lure Amity in the areas full of traps. "Come at me, if you dare !" you shouted. Amity smirked. "My pleasure. Abomination, RISE !" and a giant magenta shape grew up to 7 ft (2m).

"Oh, no..." you thought as you started running out of it's sight. The abomination stepped on one of Eda's traps and caught fire. The crowd became noisy. Lilith was startled. King and Eda cheered.

"How did you do that???" asked Amity.

"Magic...It's magic, of course ! What else?" you said, trying to convince everyone that.

The abomination formed back into shape again but stepped onto another trap which caused a tornado to form and throw the abomination along with Amity far away. The abomination bumped into the arena, and made few from the audience, including King to roll down the stairs.

"What are you playing at? You didn't use your hands when casting that spell ! How did you do that?" she shouted at you.

"Don't come any closer !" you shouted at Amity, thinking that Eda's traps were too dangerous . King rolled into the arena and landed on the trap between Amity and you. Magical spikes appeared, poking King's T-shirt and backpack. Lilith approached and analyzed the spikes. A wide smirk appeared on her face. "One of your tricks, sister? This means you lose !"

"I knew you couldn't do magic but cheating is against the rules !" Amity said while you tried to explain that it wasn't your idea and that you only agreed to the duel because she angered you after bullying King.

"What? Ridiculous ! I admit no such thing !" Amity said offended as she turned around to leave the arena.

Eda noticed something glued on to the back of Amity's neck. "Hold it right there !" she shouted and went towards Amity to remove it. The moment it got removed, the abomination deflated and disappeared. "A power glyph from the Construction Coven !" shouted Eda, startling everyone from the audience. "You cheated !" Eda teased Lilith.

"I only did it because I knew that YOU would cheat !" said Lilith angered at Eda who started teasing her in rhymes about cheating. Lilith couldn't take it anymore and took out her staff and zapped Eda with her magic. Eda smirked and took out her own staff too.

The crowd shouted witch's duel and cheered. You followed Amity outside of the arena. She hid from the public and started to cry. You felt bad and approached her. "I didn't mean to embarrass you..."

"It's all you EVER DO ! First at school and now THIS !" shouted Amity. "You made fun of me in front of the Emperor's Coven which represents my future ! You think it's so easy being a witch ! I've been working my whole life to get to the top ! You cheated ! You lost ! You are not a witch ! Say it !" shouted Amity out of control.

"I am not a witch, but I'm training hard to be one." you said and you took out a piece of paper to draw the light magic spell symbol on it, forming light.

"A child can cast light...but never seen it being casted like that." Amity said impressed.

"I had to improvise since I can't use magic like you do." Amity frowned. She grabbed your hand and cancelled the everlasting oath. She turned around to leave.

"Can I still learn magic?" you asked.

"Humans have no magic ability, but I doubt that would stop you." Amity said as she put on her hoodie and left without looking back.

Eda and Lilith had a vicious battle. Both used very powerful spells against each other. Eda fooled Lilith to show compassion to not attack anymore. Eda ran away while yelling to call the battle a draw.

Back at the owl house Eda kept bragging about how she defeated her sister in battle. You, on the other hand kept thinking of Amity. Sure, she was mean to King but you wanted to change her bad impression she had of humans learning magic.

"I'll show her ! I can become the biggest witch of my kind !"

You practiced different spells from Eda's books all night long and got 2 of them right. You were very proud of yourself.
=================================
The next day, you sneaked back into the school to spy on various classes and learn some new magic techniques but ran into Amity who was reading books to children in the library. You couldn't believe your eyes. She was a kind and sweet girl after all but with a tough appearance. Amity found your hiding spot and rolled her eyes. "Uh, you again ! What are you doing here now?"

"Amity...I noticed that you were reading books for the kids. That's a very sweet thing to do."

"That's for...extra credit OK? Now, leave me alone ! Every time you come near me, I get in trouble ! Don't let anyone see you near me ! Got it?" Amity spoke in a high pitched voice, forgetting that raising your voice in the library was forbidden.

"I wanted to show you the new spells I learned last night by myself."

"I don't care, OK? Just go !"

You turned around feeling down and ran into Amity's older siblings who were spying on you from behind a book shelf.

"Don't let her get to you." Amity's sister said. She looked like Amity but not as pretty. She had long dark green hair, just like her brother. Amity's had a lighter tone.

"I'm Emira and this is Edric. We were dying to meet you !"

"Right ! We heard how you embarrassed our sister Mittens at the covention. No one else had that courage." Edric said.

"Mittens?" you asked. Amity turned around. "Shut up ! Never call me that name again !" Both her siblings started to make fun of Amity. You didn't like that.

"Hey, you guys. That's enough ! OK?"

Both looked at each other and laughed louder. "You clearly are a human !" Emira said. "Hang out with us ! We are much cooler and you will have way more fun !"

You followed Amity's siblings who started to prank the teachers and students there until all of you got kicked out of the library. You found a way back in but Emira and Edric blocked your way before you could get away.

"Going somewhere? I thought we were your friends !" Emira said. You got frightened. They could use many spells against you if they wanted and both of them were a bunch of delinquents breaking school rules.

"We are friends." you answered.

Emira and Edric started to laugh. "We were just kidding. Come on ! We want to show you something cool !" Emira said.

Behind a book shelf at the Romance section, after lifting a book called "The lonely witch & secret room", you discovered a secret room which had a desk with a pile of books on it. Near it you saw a pillow, a pair of slippers, a mug, a light up candle and star lights hanging from the ceiling.

"Wow, your club house looks so cool ! This is how I'd imagine my secret hiding spot."

"We don't hang out in the library !" said Edric.

"This is Amity's secret hide-away." said Emira smirking evilly.

"Mittens is too full of herself and tells on us when we cut class." said Edric pulling an innocent act.

"We don't want to mess with people like that, so we wanted to ask you to help us find her diary." said Emira.

"Then we can post the pages all over the school walls for everyone to see !" said Edric who high fived Emira.

"Good one, Edric !"

"Umm, don't you guys thing you are kind of taking this too far?" you asked shocked.

"No? We are her family ! Life is tough. She needs to learn the hard way and how to lighten up." said Emira smiling.

Amity's siblings were extremely cruel and manipulative. They just pretend to be nice but they were just using you to get what they wanted. You were trapped in that room with them and couldn't leave. One thing was certain: You'll have to find the diary before them !

Chapter 12: Amity's secrets

Chapter Text

Finding Amity's diary was easier said than done. That room was filled with hundreds of books and it was a two against one situation. You needed good luck to find the diary before them.

"I found it !" said Emira. "It was super easy. It's her favorite color and hidden in a locked desk drawer. Seriously, couldn't she be more obvious? Is she 5? " she said laughing.

She opened the diary and the first page had Amity's hologram talking to the diary. Amity looked lonely. "Sure, I have the best grades at school but I wish I had more friends."

"Get to the recent ones ! We'll see the other ones later !" shouted Edric excited. "We will take photos and post them all over the school."

You were furious. Reading someone's diary was bad enough but how could anyone do this to their family? Before you knew it, you threw a book at Emira's hand, making her drop the diary.

"Y/N ! That scared me ! Why did you do that?" Emira asked but her voice got covered by Amity's after pages of the diary got torn and flew onto the ground.

"Is it alright for me to keep Y/N's human clothing? I'm not weird by doing that, right? It's for research ...and for my curiosity."

"I have the feeling that Y/N keeps following me everywhere, even in my dreams. Is this normal?"

Amity talked a lot about you in that diary and you wanted to find out more. However, you weren't a villain.

"What you guys are doing is wrong !" you shouted as you jumped to grab the talking pages.

"Oh, no you don't !" Emira said as she and Edric jumped to grab pages too. The door was slammed opened and all of you remained shocked.

"I thought I heard my voice !" Amity said, while looking disappointed at her diary pages scattered all over the floor, telling her life story in public. Her eyes met yours and looked quickly elsewhere. Her cheeks turned red. "You shouldn't be here ! How did you find this room?"

"Please, Kitten ! You are underestimating your siblings. As if we wouldn't know your secret hideouts !" said Emira smirking.

"I wouldn't expect any less from you two but with you Y/N, I am highly disappointed..." Amity said as she started to collect the pages from the floor.

"I was completely against this !" you shouted.

" You were no fun." said Edric. You threw him a disgusted look.

Amity got all the pages back into her diary. Her cheeks were still red from anger and embarrassment.

"I wasn't done reading that." said Emira as she used her magic to snatch the diary back but Amity opposed. Edric grabbed it.

"Abomination, rise !" shouted Amity.

"Ha ! Do you think that can stop me? " Emira asked as she made the abomination chase after an illusion. While Edric got distracted, you snatched the diary from his hand and rushed out the door. You heard everyone chasing you while shouting your name.

The twins aimed at you with their magic a few times but you managed to dodge them. You took a right turn and hid behind a bookcase. The twins followed but two abominations grabbed them.

"Hey ! Put me down !" Emira shouted.

"Put me down now, you monster !" shouted Edric.

"This is not over ! I'm telling mom !" shouted Emira.

"So what else is knew?" said Amity with a bored expression. "Abominations, take my siblings home !"

"What? No ! I don't want my friends to see me being carried in such disgrace !" shouted Emira.

"What if they post this on Penstagram for everyone to see?" asked Edric worried.

"I would die ! Mittens, put us down now !" shouted Emira.

"Say that nicer ! and you better apologize." said Amity.

Emira gave Edric a funny look as if they were about to burst out laughing. Them apologizing for a prank sounded ridiculous.

"Alright, we promise we would mind our own business and tell nothing to mom." said Emira.

"and we are sorry for having fun." said Edric.

"That wasn't the apology I expected but I guess that will do. Abominations, drop them !" Amity said as the abominations dropped the twins on the floor.

"That hurt ! This is not over !" shouted Emira as Edric helped her up and ran away.

"You can come out now. They left." said Amity. You realized that she was talking to you. The abominations disappeared.

"You were great and cool !" you said to Amity who blushed more than before.

"Do you have any idea how much problems you keep causing me?" Amity said, looking straight into your eyes.

"It wasn't my fault. I thought your siblings were as cool as you."

"Well, they are not. Now you know." she said in a sad tone.

"They are bullies and totally uncool." you continued. "Here is the diary. We didn't hear more than few pages. I'm sorry."

"I can tell you something embarrassing I did. This way we can be even. Last night I tripped over Eda's shoe while getting a glass of water. I landed on my face and broke the cup and woke up the entire house."

Amity started to laugh. "Like I said. You cause trouble everywhere you go."

"I also mixed up the sugar with salt while making breakfast. I ended up adding salt in everyone's tea and added sugar over some food I've never seen before and it just melted !"

Amity continued to laugh as she walked you outside. "You are so weird ! Let's not mention to anyone all of this ever happened."

"Agreed." you said as you headed back to the owl house but not before throwing Amity one more glance. The fact that Amity had your hoodie and dreams about you made you smile. "Let's meet again."

Chapter Text

Eda entered the house with a bag full of garbage, scattering it on the floor while King jumped into the pile to search.

"Hello? Your trash is getting cold!" Eda shouted at you.

"Sorry, but I'm busy studying. You can take my share of garbage too."

"Studying? Did you lay for too long in the sun? You have a fever?" asked Eda, amazed.

"You heard me. I want to prepare to join Hexside."

"Listen, kiddo. You need to do more than prepare for the entrance exam. It's not easy. Hey, where are you going? I'm still talking here!"

"Oh, sorry but I'm running late! I promised I would meet Amity! Talk later!" you shouted as you grabbed some food and your bag with some books you found at Eda's place that you hoped were useful enough to help you pass the entrance exam. You run out of the door before Eda can say anything. King gives Eda a look, but before she can understand it, Hooty starts worming towards them.

"What's going on, hoot ho-!" He is cut off by Eda slapping his face away. "Yeesh. Can't a house demon ask questions...?" the owl-tube says, before retracting.

You rushed to the market and saw Amity in the background. "Hey, Amity ! Over here!" but her siblings gave you a jump scare from behind. They're about to cast an illusion spell, and before you can find out what it is, you see Amity get closer.

"Hey! Leave Y/N alone! Go bother someone else!" shouted Amity as she approached you. "Oh, I'm sorry about that. They insisted to come along. They started acting all nice to me after that library incident.

"Well, I was hoping for you to help me prepare for the entrance exam! I want to join Hexside! We might even be in the same class!"

Despite Amity feeling her cheeks turning red, she knew that you couldn't do any proper magic and her Abomination coven was clearly not for you. Her eyes turned sad for a second.

"Hey, Mittens! Don't look too excited!" said Emira, teasing her sister.

"It's not that! But it will be hard work." said Amity, trying to cover the fact that you are a human without magic ability.

"Don't worry about it. You're actually pretty smart! You will figure something out!" said Edric.

"Sure thing! We can also help out." said Emira with a large smile.

Amity knew that her siblings were just teasing and they were most likely going to cause trouble.

"You know one spell but you need to know 2 at least in order to get in... and some basic runes, but you can easily learn that since you are clever enough." said Amity.

"Oh, come on! Y/N knows 2 spells, right?" asked the brother Blight.

"Umm... yeah! Of course!" you said awkwardly, putting on a smile that seemed uneasy. Fortunately, before they could catch on, Amity's siblings left after seeing some new prank opportunity.

"If you don't know 2 spells, they will put you into the babies class."

"I can show you that I learned some spells, though I learnt it by spying on students in class."

"Just by watching? That's impressive! I know you can do the light spell..."

"...and I can do the summoning spell, but I'm only going to try it on small objects. I had a hard time cleaning up after trying that the first time." You quickly do a demonstration.

"I still don't know how a human could learn spells so fast." said Amity, amazed after you summoned the school flier she was holding.

"The thing is, they might ask me to do certain spells I don't know yet."

"No. You can show any 2 spells you know. The light spell and the summoning one are enough. I can train you and maybe you will learn some new spells before the exam day next week. Till then, I'll bring you the book about runes that you should read and learn."

"Oh, thank you, thank you, thank you!" you said as you hugged Amity tight. She backed away with a red face.

"Alright. The training starts tomorrow. I'll bring you the book then too. Until then, just train by perfecting the spells you already know."
---------------------------------------------
You practically rolled down into Eda's kitchen begging her to teach you a new spell as soon as possible so that you can be sure you won't end up in the baby class.

The Owl Lady groans, but can't stop a small smile forming. "I tried to warn you; it's not easy getting in. Well played though. Then get ready, I will take you to The Knee!"

"The what?"
----------------------------------------------
You dress up for winter and followed Eda up a mountain. Even with two layers of clothes and fabric wrapped around you, the cold reaches your skin, and makes you slightly pale.

"Be careful! There are also a few slitherbeasts here and there. Leave them alone, and they won't harm you." You nod, clutching your arms. Barely warm, you keep walking... when suddenly, you receive a snowball in the back of your head.

"Hey ! Who threw that?"

"Can't have been me. I'm in front of you, and I'm not about to cast a duplicating spell." said Eda. You both look around, before you spot the three figures you were least expecting to see here.

Emira and Edric were laughing like crazy, clasping their sides and looking like they were choking on air. Amity was with them, staying silent for the most part.

"Oh, no! Of all the places Amity decided to come to, she chose here?! And she'll be training here as well..." you told Eda.

"Tough luck, kiddo. The Knee is the most magic filled part of the Isles, so that was expected. Guess we'll have to impress the audience."

"I'd rather ask you to make me disappear..."

"That's a tough spell. We came here for something else."

"Y/N, did you come here to train?" asked Amity.

"Yes. Uh, just so you know, I will be learning a new SECRET spell." you said, pointing out that you should be left alone.

"Oh, good luck then."

Eda returned with some snowballs. "Here, I want you to identify different types of snow by taste!"

"Is this some new technique? Never heard of this," Emira commented.

"...and you won't hear. It's meant to be secret." said Amity, going to another place to train.
-------------------------------------------------
"If you want to learn a new spell, you will have to use your senses and learn from the island. Listen. Look. Find out what it's trying to tell you." said Eda.

This part of the island looked incredibly scary, all covered with the decaying bones of a giant demon.

"This is not going to help me at all!" you said as you tried your light spell again. It was snowing. The light bulb created disappeared in the amount of snowflakes. You looked up at the sky, and sighed. Looking closely, you could see lights in the sky... that seemed to resemble the light glyph...

"Wait a minute, what is that?" you said to yourself. A snowflake fell onto your open palm, and it seemed to have a different glyph at the centre, which you quickly started to draw into the snow-covered ground. Excitedly, you scribbled it into the ground and the moment you tapped on it, a block of ice was created.

"I can't believe it! Magic is everywhere! I learned a new spell by myself! Did you hear that, Eda?" but your shouting woke up the slitherbeast from the opposite direction. It started running towards you, but Amity ran to you and cast a fire spell that hit the monster. Annoyed, it turned away, and went to chase after Edric and Emira. Amity used her wand to cast a protective spell on you.

"Stay safe! I will go to save my siblings!"

"Wait! Don't leave me here!" you shouted. You tried casting the ice spell few more times, hoping to break the spell around you, as you watch Amity and her siblings run into a cave. "I need something bigger! Way bigger!"

You drew a huge symbol under yourself, jumped on it and had the block of ice shoot up and throw you out of the protection spell. You followed Amity's footprints. Emira and Edric used some spells to bind the monster down but the it was too strong.

"Mittens, help us!" shouted Emira.

"I can't ! My wand ran out of battery !" shouted Amity, annoyed at the name and situation.

You used the new ice spell to throw blocks of ice at the monster, distracting it towards you but you had no other plan afterwards. The monster kept chasing you until Eda showed up.

"Hey, are you guys having fun without me?"

"I'm can't call it fun !" you said shouting.

"Do you guys wanna see an awesome spell?" asked Eda. "The sleeping spell."

Eda casted the sleeping spell at the monster and it fell asleep few feet away from you.

"Wow, that was close ! Oh, I learned a new spell, look!" you said as you showed it to everyone.

"That's impressive, kiddo !"

"See? Y/N didn't even need help from a training wand for the new spells like you !" said Edric.

"I agree. Try casting a spell on that block of ice Y/N created. Try melting it. You just need to focus." said Emira.

Amity felt embarrassed and angry but she had to focus since everyone's eyes were on her. She drew a circle with her finger in the air and concentrated on it as she casted at the block of ice. It melted it.

"You did it!" you shouted as you hugged Amity again but she tried escaping and slipped on ice and dragged you along. You both rolled down a cliff into a pile of snow.

Everyone called you but Amity melted the snow around you. Then you drew the ice symbol and a huge block of ice helped you reach back up.

"This was a great training experience for both of you, I see !" said Eda. "Let's not do that again." she said in a lower voice tone.

"I guess we will meet at school next week. I will sure pass the exam !" you said happily.

"You still need to read the Runes book but after seeing how fast you learn things, I'm sure it will be easy for you." Amity said smiling.

"I hope it will be. See you tomorrow!"

Chapter 14: Mixed Magic

Chapter Text

Eda, Hooty and King were waiting for you to return from Hexside school.

"This is taking forever! Y/N just needs to choose one track. How long are they going to keep Y/N there during the first day?" asked Eda, staring at her reflection in her tea that got cold.

"Y/N probably made new friends so they remained after class to chat." said King. "I can't wait to meet them!"

"If only the rest of the world would be as friendly as you, King." said Eda bored. Approximately 12 minutes have passed.

Hooty stretched it's long neck to see who was coming near the house after hearing a crowd of people.

"Y/N's here!" shouted Hooty, making Eda spill her tea cup over her dress.

"Well at least this dress got washed today." said Eda unimpressed while Hooty opened the door. You barely got to set foot inside the house and Eda already jumped at you with questions.

"About time you showed up! Where have you been? I've been worried sick ! Did you want me to call a detective to look for you on your very first day of school? Of course not."

"No, I wasn't even that late, I-"

"That's what they all say! What track did you get into?"

"Ta-daaaaa!" you said as you showed everyone your new school uniform in many colors.

"Oh. I thought you had to choose just one." said King.

Eda approached you, placed her hands on your shoulders and started to cry. "You started following my footsteps. I knew a single type of magic won't be good enough for you."

"Is she always that dramatic?" Gus whispered at you.

"I heard that!" said Eda. Gus quickly hid behind you and Willow.

"Eda, let me explain. At first I was very upset to discover that I could only choose one type of magic to learn. I had trouble deciding so the principal enrolled me into the Potions Track, but I got caught having a crystal ball in my bag, which was used by the Oracle track..." Eda raised an eyebrow. "so I got detention for that."

"Wow ! A lot of things happened to you today!" said King.

"You're telling me? And I'm just getting started!" you said, before grabbing a glass of water since your mouth became dry from all the talking. "So anyway, I wanted to escape detention and I did, with the help of some other students I met there named Viney, Jerbo and Barkus who took me to their secret hideout - which was a room full of shortcuts which take to other parts of the school."

"Nothing this interesting has ever happened to me at school," said Eda, though she couldn't help but wonder what had happened to the shortcut room since she'd left Hexside.

"So those guys were using the shortcuts to listen in on other classes and learning how to combine multiple types of magic."

"Go on! Tell the best part!" said an excited Willow.

"I got to fight a real basilisk! It was disguised as the school inspector, who just so happened to visit today. Thought basilisks were just a myth."

"I think your story sounds like a myth," said Eda.

"Well it's all true! Ask anybody !" you said revolted while Gus and Willow backed you up. "We managed to defeat it using mixed magic so the principal finally accepted to let us all learn mixed magic. I hope all our classes from now on to be this exciting!"

"I've never heard anyone call the school 'exciting' but I'm so proud of you!" said Eda, giving you a tight embrace.

"Hey, me too!" said King, while Hooty started to slither it's neck around and restraining you all tight into a hug.

"Oh my gosh! Look at the time! I promised Amity that I'd go to train with her after classes. Got to go!" you said, while stuffing your mouth with Eda's mystery pies and left in a hurry. Gus and Willow followed.

Eda then turned to Hooty and King, who were now looking anxious. "So... Any of you going to tell me who ate my last batch of pies?"
------------------------------------
Gus and Willow followed you for a bit, before realising they needed to be home. After bidding them safe travels, you went towards the place you met Amity for the first time. She was waiting for you under a tree reading a book. The wind was softly blowing through her green dyed hair.

"You have a leaf in your hair." you said with a soft voice as Amity raised her eyes to look at you. She closed the book and tried to locate the leaf you mentioned in her hair. "No, don't remove it! I, uh, think it looks pretty."

"Are you joking right now? You came here to brag with your achievements from today."

"What? No! I came here to train with you, as promised."

"As promised." Amity repeated flatly. " I don't think you need training. You learned everything by yourself and defeated the basilisk. You are very cool. Everyone was talking about you at school and they will continue to for a very long time." Amity said, bringing her knees closer to her chest. You thought that she would be happier for you but she had sadness in her beautiful eyes. "I wish I was like you." she finally replied. "Ambitious, brave, optimistic."

"Look, Amity... I learned from the best. I couldn't have done it without everyone's help, especially Eda's and yours. Sure, your personality differs from mine but that's what makes you special." you said smiling as your hand went through Amity's hair with the intention to remove the fallen leaf from her hair. However, your words made Amity blush. The fact that you got closer made her heart beat faster. She thought that you were about to kiss her so she pretended to act tough and said "Ok, fine. Here !" she said as she gave you a quick kiss on the lips before turning into a tomato as she realized that it was something she couldn't take back. You remained startled as you watched the pretty girl with green hair turning around and run away, abandoning her book and cape.

"What just happened?" was the first question that came to mind, while your heart started to beat faster.

This was by far the best day of your life.

Chapter Text

Chapter 15: Moments of Reflection

After returning back home, due to your training session with Amity being cut short, you try not to make too much contact with anyone in the Owl House. In all truth, your mind is too distracted by the kiss that was about to happen under the tree to really care about what had been happening while you'd been away. As you walked towards the door, Hooty stretches out of his doorframe - to be honest, you've never really felt comfortable after seeing him do that, knowing he could spy on you whenever you thought you were alone - and starts talking.

"Heeey, bestie!" he shouts in that annoying voice of his, before seeing the dismissive look on your face. "Y/N? Are you okay? Do you want some bugs?" he added, hoping that would cheer you up.

Purposefully trying to ignore the last part - but not really hearing anything - you automatically reply, "Not right now, Hooty." Hooty sighed, and started rambling on about how he was never including in things, but by that point, you'd closed the door.

Eda then calls from the kitchen, "Good, kid, you're back home. Dinner's not gonna be on for a while... Thanks to a certain house demon." She cast a glance to the window, where the house demon himself was, looking at Eda nervously.

Eventually, Hooty cracked under the pressure, and started crying, "I'M SORRY, EDA!" Eda looked guilty and started comforting the house demon, but you don't catch anything more except for something about an echomouse and pies.

You walk past them and up the stairs, going to your room. You're nearly at the door, when King walks up to you.

"Y/N! So, how did training with Amity go? Are you a warrior now?" he asked excitedly.

"Training..." you don't say anything, as your mind goes back to that kiss again, making you blush furiously and heat up. "Training was... weird. I mean, not in a bad way weird! Just-"

You look back down at king, who said, "Weh?" Clearly, he had no idea what you were talking about.

"I- Never mind. I can't talk about it. Not right now," you finish, before stepping into your room.

King gave you a sombre look, as he nervously said, "You, uh, sure you'll be fine? Did something happen between you two?" You turn redder, before silently shaking your head. You step into your room and close the door. Walking over to your desk, you sigh and take a seat, looking at a blank page. It just stares right back at you, making you feel slightly unsettled. Quickly, you take out a couple of pencils and begin to draw, hoping to ease your mind.

Your mind begins to think back to a few days back, when you were with Gus in Hexside. You were supposed to go there with him just to talk to witches about humans and the items they'd made. Obviously, things had spiraled out of control, leading to you ending up in the detention pit with Gus and a kid named Matt. You had learned that Gus lied about your ban at Hexside, and you were actually not meant to be there. But it had all ended well enough, with you destroying detention, escaping and actually getting into Hexside by a sudden twist of fate! The worst Gus had faced was being stripped of his title of Leader of the Human Appreciation Society, but he told you later that, "If it means you got into school with us, Y/N, then it was worth it."

Matt was the leader now, for some reason, and was now in charge of teaching the club about humans, their history, biology, and inventions... To be honest, it was amazing to think how even just the concept of an app on your phone was enough to shock any witch.

Maybe even Amity...?

No! You don't want to start thinking about her again, as your still trying to figure out what happened. Your heart wants you to go through these feelings, to complete the whole 'fantasy adventure' feeling of your journey on the Boiling Isles. Plus, she was beautiful, smart, charming, kind... Part of you did like her. Ok, actually, part of you was probably more in love with her than you'd ever been before.

You had had a few crushes before, but being a social outcast made having love like that a hopeless pursuit. You'd never really talked to any of them, and when you did, they would move away from you awkwardly, or ignore you, or worse - say that you were too weird. Although you could accept it was true, it still felt like a slap on the face.

But... Amity had been the one to initiate the kiss. So... maybe she did care about you? Maybe she liked you more than she let on?

The voices in your head start talking again. "Why would Amity, the prettiest girl you've ever met, like somebody like you? You're not even a witch, Y/N! What makes you think she'd actually like you?" You start to become enveloped in your thoughts again, like you did back on Earth, feeling sad and disheartened. The battle between your heart and mind was a losing one.

You finally look back at the paper you've been doodling on. Apart from a few basic light glyphs you've been drawing, in the centre, there's now a picture of you and the girl you've not stopped thinking about, holding hands. "When did that happen?" you silently wonder. You start to crumple it up, but before you do fully, your heart finally wins over you. Yes. You do like Amity. There's no point denying it to yourself anymore. Whether she liked you anymore or not after running off today was still unclear. But, about the drawing...

-------------------------------------

Amity rushed back into the manor, slamming the door behind her without realising. She'd been running home the whole way, face still red as a tomato. She too couldn't stop thinking about what had happened between herself and Y/N. Before she could think any more about it, her twins walked up to her, smirking.

"Hey, Mittens," Edric began, "how was your da-?" His sister shot him a look. "I mean, day!"

"Shut up, Edric," Amity muttered, as she tried to move past them. Emira looked confused.

"Mittens, are you ok?" she asked.

"I'm fine, just let me go," the youngest Blight replied.

"You do know how long we've had to stall our, ahem, dearest mother for, right?" Edric added.

"I'll talk to Mom later," she flatly replied, before going up the stairs into her room. Emira and Edric, clearly unable to take the hint, tried to follow her, but stopped when their younger sibling glared at them. She walked into her room, and immediately locked the door.

She held her back against the door, breathing in and out rapidly, thinking about what had happened today. She'd just kissed Y/N! On the lips! Even if it was for a second only, why?! SHe'd never, ever, ever done something like this before. She'd never felt this way around anyone else.

Amity couldn't stop thinking about how stupid she was. Why would anyone like her anyway, especially Y/N? All she'd ever been since meeting Y/N was a meanie. And that was putting it lightly.

She walked over to her bed, still in a daze. After sitting down on it, she took a few slower breaths in, and tried to focus on doing her schoolwork. Unfortunately, a) she'd finished all her school work and homework and practically any other work two days ago. B), your hoodie from the market, hanging on the back of her chair, caught her eye again.

Y/N's dress was pretty... Just like you...

Amity groaned, and sunk into her bed. She couldn't get rid of any of her thoughts, no matter how hard she tried. She was a mess.

When she'd first met you, pretending to be an abomination...  When you'd duelled with her at the Covention - which, although embarrassing for her, she now didn't seem to mind all that much - and talked to her shortly after... Seeing that post online of you, Willow and Gus making their house move with moon magic... Seeing you in the school when you were supposed to be banned from Hexside, but for what reason, the girl didn't know... Both of you training on the Knee together... And then just now.

She had to admit, you were admirable. Trying so hard to be a witch despite the impossibilities that lay ahead.

But did she actually like you?

OTLR11: Hello! A few of you may notice now that I, OswaldTLR11, am now a co-creator on this story thanks to BlackRose28! I've read through a couple of her projects, and they're very good, so if you like this, who knows? She might have written another one you'll find just as bewitching (no pun intended).

Anyways, I hope I can help with the story and make it as great as it deserves to be. :)

Chapter 16: Reaching Understandings

Summary:

A few days after your contemplation time at the Owl House, things take a turn at Hexside...
Part 1.

Chapter Text

Chapter 16:

It's been a few days since your... unexpected encounter with Amity. You've told yourself to move on, and honestly, life has made you so busy, you can't really begin to focus on the Blight. And that's for the best. Or that's what you're telling yourself.

After your time alone in your room, King, Eda and the house demon decided not to talk too much about what had happened. They acted normal around you - which was mildly comforting for the first day or so - but eventually, they fell to secret gossip. Mostly King and Hooty though; when they started talking about ship and kid names at night (an annoying subject, but you were meant to be in bed, so you couldn't interrupt) Eda didn't really say much, except for snorting or chuckling. You'd already convinces yourself that Amity could never have liked you, and that was just a fluke. What was more concerning was how they even knew about Amity and you.

It was beyond your understanding... but the fact that there was a hole in the ground on the grudgby pitch when you went back the next day, said more than enough.

Were it not for your still-ongoing-awe-at-being-in-a-fantasy-world-filled-with-magic, you would've strangled Hooty to death. Maybe. It wasn't wise to anger the house, Eda had warned her, and fortunately, it was only a feeling you were experiencing.

Anyway, today was the fourth or fifth day since... "since Hooty had spied on you and Amity. But it's no big deal, Y/N. Just keep to yourself, and don't say anything to her. It'll be fine," you whispered to yourself.

"It's no big deal..."

-------------------------

When you arrive at Hexside, first things first, you meet up with Willow and Gus. You only pray that they're there so you won't have to be alone today, and fortunately, your friends are standing right outside the entrance, on the steps. Willows calls you over, and nudges Gus. After a few seconds, he looks up from his scroll and waves.

"Hey, Y/N, how are you doing?" he asked, giving you a high-five. The plant-track girl was still somewhat confused about your human gesture, but she shrugged it off.

"Fine, mostly," you say.

Willow started talking. "Well, guess what? Today, we're extracting memories!" She sounds excited, but all of a sudden, you become very nervous. "What's wrong?" she asks. Obviously, you know what could go wrong; if anyone found that memory of you and Amity...

Gus quickly puts a hand on your shoulder, as you realise you were slightly hyperventilating. "Hey, don't worry. Nobody forces you to show your memories - everyone knows that's personal space. Plus... we don't know the effects it could have on a human for sure," he added in uncertainly.

Well, THAT'S a relief. Knowing you won't have to show the moments in your head you'd rather not remember is a relief.

You go up to your friends, and give them a hug, sighing deeply. Willow reassures you, "Don't worry, I don't mind showing you my memories, Y/N."

"Really? I mean, are you sure you want to do that?" you ask.

She chuckles. "Well, I'm just showing you moments of my life, and since you're a friend, it's not a problem." You smile at the words 'friend', having never been called that before.

All of a sudden, the bell rings. Screams of agony siren throughout the halls, beckoning you to come in. Despite the general weirdness of it, you walk in like you normally do, with your friends on either side. As you turn a corner, and bid them farewell, you think you see a flash of green pass by. You stiffen, and when you look again, you realise it's just a green poster fluttering on the wall.

What has happened to you?

_____________________________

Your lessons just begin normally. Being a multi-track student wasn't all that different to school in the Human Realm - you studied multiple subjects and had to prepare for each and every one of their tests. Balancing them wasn't really a challenge, but your friends found it admirable, so you weren't complaining. Then again, it wasn't like studying one track wasn't cool, as it meant putting all your efforts into one thing you were sure you could ace.

But the more you think about it, the more you frown. Choosing one track to study was a privilege, but being forced to? Being bound to it for life? That felt wrong. And on top of that, learning more than one type of magic seemed cool, but hearing it being called a crime sounded atrocious. Who knew a magical world like this could have been filled with so much separation?

It was a miracle that you were even allowed to study multiple subjects, but Principal Bump was only giving you this one chance. You had to be careful.

Eventually, you finish your Construction class, which involved studying types of rocks. Which was technically something anyone could do on Earth, but on the Isles, the rocks seemed to have major differences. Like a mind of their own, appetites, and curses and hexes that could pass on to you if you even stepped too close to it.

Just your luck they had to bring one of those into the room. How they did it was (currently) beyond you, but if you ended up with bad luck or a broken arm for the rest of the year, at least you knew how that could have happened.

Finally, after a quick lunch with your best friends, you follow Willow into a classroom with dim lights. It smells like mashrooms - a confusing alternative for mushrooms that can't be described with any word other than old. Multiple desks have clotheslines and tweezers already on them, and they call to you. Willow says, "So, Y/N, are you ready to do this?" You think for a moment, before nodding, even if every part of you was shaking at the thought of memory extraction...

It wouldn't be that bad, right?

Chapter Text

Turns out, pulling memories out of a person's mind isn't that painful. At least, not as far as you knew. If it was hurting, Willow was doing a good job of keeping a perfectly straight face, not giving away anything. In fact, it almost looked like she was finding it funny. You quickly pulled the memory out of her ear, finding it so cool and weird all at once. A small photograph popped into existence in your hand, slightly warm. It was still black, so you quickly pegged it to the clothesline arranged on your desk.

"Be careful with my brain!" Willow grinned, while you just nodded.

"Of course! C'mon, you can trust me!" you replied, being mock-offended. You both looked at each other for a few more seconds, before laughing. It was nice to have Willow around to do this with you. If you could choose anyone else to do this with, you would turn them down; this was priceless time.

Though maybe...

No! You scolded yourself internally, trying your best to keep your mind of those triggering thoughts. The last thing you wanted was for Willow to notice your tomato red cheeks and ask questions.

And when she asked questions, you would HAVE to give answers.

You watched the memory slowly start to take color and shape. "Look, Willow!" you exclaimed as quietly as possible. She turned around and you watched as a picture of Willow with some pretty bad hair appeared. She grimaced, but you remembered something, and took out your phone, scrolling to a picture of your own bad hair. "Hey, Willow, looks like we've both had really bad hair days!"

She laughs, her anxiety at the photo melting away. "Y/N, you really know how to make me feel better." You glance at her, feeling some pride in that statement, before turning back to the photos. Immediately, the rest of the photos started becoming more clear, but one caught your eyes. It was the one you'd first taken from Willow when she was slightly unprepared. You'd expected it to be blurry, but it was actually quite clear, and it showed a picture of Willow and... a younger Amity? Hugging her?

This just screamed 'mysterious backstory'. Before you could ask her anything though, the teacher came round.

"Willow, Y/N, how are you getting along?" she asked.

"Oh, we're doing fine," you chirped happily, "and we've got a few successful prints!"

She smiled at your enthusiasm, and turned to the photos. Her hand hovered over the one with Willow and her dads at the playground, as she said, "Be very careful, though. This is the actual memory straight from the brain. If you damage it, there's no way to make a back-up, or restore the original memory. That's why you'll also need to learn how to put them back once you're done."

You look at her, feeling confident. "Don't worry, I'm sure nothing bad will happen to--"

The bell above the door rang. Well, not so much 'rang', as 'screamed'. You glanced up for a second, and looked to Willow. Everyone started leaving the classroom, but you hadn't forgotten about what you'd seen. Willow looks at you, knowing what you're about to say.

"Y/N... I know what you're going to ask me. But I don't want to talk about it, ok? C'mon, let's go have lunch." She got off her stool and started for the door, but you stayed behind, staring at the photos intently. It was as if staring at it would make everything make sense...

The plant witch glanced back at you, and sighed. "Promise me you won't mess with the pictures? No schemes, shenanigans, plots, no nothing?" You smiled back at her, hoping to reassure her, and nodded. Satisfied, Willow walked off... but as you followed behind her, you couldn't help but turn back one last time, your eyes landing back on that picture of Amity. Why was she in a photo with Willow? Why weren't they talking to each other...? What had happened in the past to ruin things between them... but what was most important to you was, could you somehow fix it...?

As you made your way to the lunch table where Willow and Gus were seated, you couldn't help but notice Gus' worrisome expression. And his board, which was taking up over half of the space on the table.

"Hey Gus! What's with the board?" you asked as you sat down.

"Hey, Y/N... I'm trying to find someone to interview. It's my homework for journalism class, and it's due to-mor-row!" he grumbled. "I'm supposed to find someone interesting, noteworthy and accomplished. People aren't MEANT to be all of those things!"

"Oof..." you said, "I'm... sure you'll figure it out, Gus! You're smart."

"Thanks, Y/N, but so far, it looks like I'm about to fail..." You sigh, and give him your apple blood box, which he takes stressfully. Turning to Willow however, you get worried. She's sweating like crazy, and pouring water all over herself... but the water just seems to be turning into steam on contact, because it doesn't seem to relieve her. The Boiling Isles were hot, though something like this wasn't normal. Thankfully, there must have been some completely normal, witchy explanation for this, right?

"Uh Willow? Are you ok...?"

Willow turned to look at you and Gus with blank eyes. "Hello there. Remind me of your names again?"

Gus frowned. "Willow, what's with the sudden amnesia? Are you ok?" He turned to you, panicking again. "Is this a prank?! Because it is NOT helping-!"

You frantically shake your head, equally panicked. "No, Gus, why would we prank you? Willow was perfectly fine during..." Suddenly, it clicked.

Photo class. The memories. The warning about prints being damaged.

"Oh no. Photo class!" You looked at Gus, who picked up on the problem almost instantly. Could the plant witch's memories have been tampered with? You both hurried to the classroom, and opened the door just in time to see...

"Amity?!" You and Gus gasped in horror.

The girl in mention, standing right in front of you, was holding a couple of photos, trying to stop a purple fire from spreading to the other ones on the clothes line. She heard her name and turned around, looking desperate herself. "Hi."

Without any hesitation, the illusionist walked up to her, as you both simultaneously said, "You destroyed Willow's memories?!" You would have found this kind of creepy under normal circumstances, but that was beside the point right now. It had to be her; the fire was definitely her colour. Or it could just as easily have been another person who did it, right?

She could be innocent, right? A part of you desperately wanted her to admit she didn't do it.

"I tried to save as many as I could!" she said, as she held up a few photos. By cursed luck, a spark of fire jumped onto the prints and burned them completely. Gus gritted his teeth as he tried to put out the fire on some of the other memories, turning away from Amity.

"Why would they make memories so flammable?!" you hear him mutter, as you try to help him. You give the green-haired girl a glance, angry and shocked. She could only return with a look of complete, utter shame. She really HAD done all of this... And to think you were liking her.

"So, Y/N, lemme get this straight," Eda began, while the young illusionist and you held Willow, "Willow and you were in photo class, ya left for lunch, and then Boots over there," she pointed a finger at Amity, who winced, "burnt up her memories."

You nodded. "That's pretty much it."

Eda grimaced. "Well, she certainly ain't looking pretty." Willow wasn't indeed, as she tried to sit down on the couch of the Owl House... Upside down.

Realising there was probably no solution they knew of, and that the adults would have gotten suspicious about the plant witch's condition, the only option that was left was the Owl House. Amity was heavily reluctant, trying to get out of coming, but that just convinced both you and Gus that she HAD to come. If she didn't fix her mistake, the guilt of it would probably live with her... Or at least, you. Because part of you wanted to see her redeem herself.

In a way, this was a perfect opportunity for you to see whether the girl who had tried to be nice and had given you that unexpected kiss could make the right choice.

Though you still did feel pretty ticked off.

"Well, good news is, I can help!" The Owl Lady declared, grinning, as Owlbert flew onto her shoulder. "It's extremely dangerous and partially illegal, with minimal side effects, but I can send you into the mind to repair the damage. Two people max."

Turning around, you looked at Amity, who was looking quite anxious just being in the house, and Gus, who was looking for something that could probably help him with the assignment he mentioned earlier. You turned back to Eda, just as she finished casting a sleep spell on Willow.

"Ok. I'm taking Amity with me."

"Huh?" Eda, Gus and Amity exclaimed.

You kept your confident face on, looking at Amity. "You burnt down her mind, literally. You HAVE to help me fix it."

Looking uncomfortable, she said, "Well... Willow might not want me in there."

C'mon, you thought, she just needs another nudge in the right direction.

"Amity, we're doing this FOR her. If anything, she'll be grateful!"

"But-!"

Not wanting to see teenagers squabbling endlessly right now, Eda cut in. "As much as I'd love to see you two arguing, we're on a timer here. If you don't fix her mind, she'll lose her memories and sense of self permanently."

Gus helpfully added, "And I can't go because I have a project to finish."

Amity sighed. "Ok... I'll do it." You smiled slightly as she walked and stood next to you, while Eda prepared the spell. Telling you both to find the inner Willow and repair the memories as quickly as possible, the Owl Lady handed you a bell to ring when you were done.

As she drew the spell circle, you braced yourself. Whatever you were about to do and see, it was going to be in your best friend's mind. Everything that happened in there stayed in there. Not a word of what you saw could be said to anyone. Glancing at Amity, you watched the spell circle as it glowed, before everything went dark.

Amity and you awoke shortly later, surrounded by a forest. Scarred trees stood around you both, bearing picture frames with memories of Willow in them.  You both smiled - Willow did love plants, and her mindscape was reflecting that almost perfectly.

Amity started walking through the row of trees. "So... where do you think the inner Willow is...?" she asked, uncertainly. She wasn't exactly expecting you to reply; it was deserved, but it was definitely hurting.

"Not sure," you replied bluntly. While obviously you did like her, right now, you felt far more distressed and worried than sociable. You glanced at her, hoping that message gets through. She seems to understand, as her shoulders stiffen slightly and she continues walking through the rows of memories silently, looking away from you. Instantly, you feel guilty, but you don't know what to do.

You stop at a picture frame, and hesitate. Walking through the forest aimlessly- well, mind-represented-as-a-forest aimlessly, wasn't going to help either you or Willow. Touching the picture frame, you expected to maybe find some sort of clue hidden in the tears and scorch marks. But you were not expecting your hand to pass through it like water. Whatever was on the other side was making your hand tingle and burn.

Retracting your hand, you turned to Amity. "I think I found something!" you exclaimed, before jumping into the picture frame. Amity's eyes widened, before running into it after you.

Seconds later, you both found yourself in a grey, faded world. A beach, to be exact, called "Lake Lacuna", as could be seen from the sign. Close to the lake, you saw would you guessed what a sort of fort? Or something like that. It was actually kind of cute, but very small. That aside, the other major problem with this grey, barely-coloured world were the burn marks. In the air. Magical, probably, but disturbing. Whatever fire was here seemed to have vanished, though, so that was somewhat good.

Amity gasped softly. "This is Lake Lacuna! Me and Willow used to go swimming here." She ran over to the fort, and started moving some of the logs with effort. "Help me out here!" she called, as you ran over to her. Despite your worry about messing with the memory, you quickly helped her fix the fort up to something more... inhabitable? Well, it certainly would've been for a younger, smaller Willow.

As Amity put the flap in at the top, colour returned to the scene. "Willow and I used to play hooky from our swimming lessons," she explained, looking and sounding a lot more sentimental, as a younger Amity and Willow suddenly appeared in the memory. They hid inside, as Amity continued, "She said she could cover us with an illusion spell, but..." Willow tried to, but failed to use an illusion spell, as a flock of seagulls appeared inside the fort. Both of them ran out, laughing, and Amity smiled fondly.

"You really seemed to be good friends with her," you muttered under your breath, smiling as you watched the scene unfold. Amity stiffened, turning slightly red out of embarrassment. You didn't comment, despite noticing out of the corner of your eye. As the scene started to rewind itself to the beginning, you gestures to Amity to follow her back out of the memory.

Maybe this would work out after all.

Notes:

I felt like I had to add more to this chapter, to balance out the next chapter slightly more. Hopefully, I improved it enough.
