Chapter 1: Awake.
Chapter Text
The girl awoke. It really had only felt like a millisecond when she closed her eyes, only feeling the slight nip of the cold that the cryosleep chamber permitted and then as soon as her eyes closed, they reopened, as if she accidentally lulled off to sleep but got woken up by someone pushing her awake again.
Two humans pulled her out of the ice chamber and checked her vitals. She realised as she floated that she was still in space, in Zero gravity just like she had been told would happen as they tended to wake all personal just before the IVS STAR landed, to have time for a briefing on how the travel went and too see if anything had changed since their cryosleep started, 5 years prior.
“How are you feeling…” the women in a white coat trailed off. She seemed to be swiping down a list within a tablet she was holding until stopping and looking back up.
“Ah, Passenger 45. Elizebeth Sully”
“That’s the one.” Elizabeth grinned slightly.
The women still seemed to be looking back at Elizabeth, she seemed to be waiting for something. The girl smiled awkwardly waiting for the next part of the examination but it didn’t come.
“Elizabeth, you still haven’t answered my question.”
Elizabeth’s eyes widened.
“Oh shit. Sorry. Yes, all good…I think.” She blushed slightly, wondering if swearing wasn’t the best thing to do when in front of a scientist, or was it a doctor? She wasn’t sure who the women talking to her was. The person behind the women though, the other doctor, male and young looking, seemed to have an expression that caused Elizebeth to feel slightly uncomfortable about. He looked worried.
The women simply nodded in response. She then pulled a pen looking instrument out of her lab coat and aimed it close near the girls eyes, a blinding light permitted causing Elizabeth to squint her eye closest to the light.
The women quickly aimed the light away from Elizabeth’s eyes and smiled.
“My apologies. I just need to make sure your eyes have not been effected during this transfer.”
Elizabeth laughed nervously.
“Yes of course. I do trust you it’s just my eyes feel a tad on the sensitive side.”
Both women and male doctor..scientist? Looked at one another and then back towards the girl. Elizabeth watched the small interaction and found herself wondering why her stating the thing caused them to make eye contact.
“But that’s just a side effect, right?” She spoke up again, now letting the women shine the light back in her one eye.
“That is correct Elizebeth. Patients may also gain headaches from long periods of cryosleep, so there is no need to panic.” The male lab coat jumped in, with a voice so calm it slightly freaked Elizabeth out.
Long periods? Why did the man feel the need to emphasise that it was long for? Surely this was the normal amount of Cyrosleep as so many before Elizabeth had completed on the same trip.
“That’s…reassuring I s’pose.” She shrugged. she did feel her head have a certain pressure to it, but it wasn’t bad. She had dealt with worse.
After having her eyes checked out, the women tapped something into her pad and then asked the male doctor next to her to read it out. It seemed this guy was in training or something. His demeanour seemed slightly more nervous, jumpy, but still Elizabeth couldn’t shake the feeling that something was up.
“Your-“ the man started, but the women quickly put a hand up and spoke.
“We are going to do a quick questionnaire just to check on your memory.” The women interrupted, nodding back at the male lab coat to proceed.
Elizabeth frowned slightly at this. Back in training on earth, they never said that a memory skill test would be conducted. Only a quick physical checkup.
“Your name is…”
“Elizabeth Sully.” She responded, taking the short silence as her queue to respond.
“Your age?”
“19.” A lie of course, but that’s what her data would say for these people. She was actually 16 and perhaps if the RDA back on earth checked out her real data they would have realised. Or maybe they simply chose not too, pretending to be blind to the fact that a teenager had applied to the program because all soldiers to them were only tools, replacements of other fallen men and women and not actual people. But hey, that worked in favour for Elizebeth at least.
“You have travelled here from what planet?”
“Mars?” She responded innocently.
Both looked up from their tablets quickly.
“Please take this test seriously.” The women reminded Elizabeth who raised an eyebrow back.
“Look, I’m sorry but I don’t remember this being apart of my training. Has something happened? Why does the dude look like he’s about to breakdown at any minute and is covering it up with a calm personality which is bordering more on creepy then reassuring.” Elizebeth interjected.
Both male and females faces whitened slightly at the accusation. This only made Elizabeth even more concerned. So she was right, something had happened. But what was it? Had they had to travel back to earth? Had the cyro chamber’s malfunctioned? The possibilities where endless, especially when in space.
“Apart from your voice sounding slightly Horace, you seem cognitively well. Let’s cut the test short shall we?” The women quickly retorted, tapping the male white coat to follow with her.
“Hold up. What’s happened? Cmon now, you can’t leave me in the dark here.” Elizabeth exasperated, using her legs to awkwardly float over to where the white coats were leaving towards.
“Please stay where your pod is located, your Lieutenant will be arriving soon.” The women suddenly urged, after seeing Elizabeth was tailing them.
“But-“
“We have other personal that needs to be awakened, please don’t intervene.”
Knowing that there was no use with these people, Elizebeth did stop. She let out a deep sigh as she really couldn’t do anymore than wait patiently until her Lieutenant came. She would ask then if they didn’t already bring it up in the meeting, surely whatever it was that made the doctor/scientists whiten to almost match the white on their lab coats was something serious.
Elizebeth watched for about half an hour as the people around her were woken back up by many different scientists and she picked up on every nervous twitch and laugh that the doctors/scientists would interject into the conversations around her.
Everyone who had woken up were not in a chatty mood like they had been before they were put under for 5 years. Infact, the soldiers looked half dead. Everyone looked exhausted, as if they would fall back asleep for another 5 years or more. It made Elizabeth wonder how fatigued she looked herself in comparison to everyone else.
Finally. A male who wore green navy clothing with many different badges on show on the right side of his collar neared the small group of 100 new soldiers, the man floated his way closer using different objects to propel himself towards the now newly woken group until he was about a few meters away.
On queue, the soldiers around Elizebeth, including herself saluted the waiting man.
“At ease.” He stated blankly.
“Welcome to Pandora. This trip has been a long one. And it comes with great regret to be the person to tell you the information I have been provided with just an hour before the rest of you had been awoken.”
Here it was, Elizebeth knew that this must of been what the doctors had been worried about. She tensed her arms around her chest a little more.
“As you know, the trip to this planet should age each and everyone here by five years, but thankfully due to the cryosleep technology you have all been in, it has kept you all mentally and physically the same age whilst you have been in a coma like state.”
Elizabeth wondered why this information was being repeated again, perhaps this was just standard information given when awoken. It felt weird that it had really been five years, her friends back on earth were five years older than her. It felt impossible to say the least.
“Now, there has been a problem that has prolonged the ships arrival to Pandora.”
What did he mean ‘prolonged?’ Exactly? And why was he prolonging the whole goddamn speech. Elizabeth watched as others around her began to shuffle on their feet nervously, it was at least reassuring that she wasn’t the only one getting annoyed with the Lieutenants slow with holding of information.
The Lieutenant gave a shaky exhale and shook his head slightly.
“…there’s no easy way to say this people. You have been floating in space for the last 15 years.”
Gasps all around Elizabeth were the first things she heard, then a deafening silence. Everyone, including herself, were in pure shock and horror.
The Lieutenant kept a blank face as he allowed the soldiers to have a moment to themselves.
“What- what do you mean 15 years?” A voice from behind Elizabeth finally broke the silence. The voice sounded like it was on the brink of having a panic attack, and Elizabeth honestly didn’t blame them.
“Meteors. They hit the ship out of it’s course to Pandora, people back on earth attempted to set the ship back on the right trail but the ships control system completely went offline when hit. It was presumed to of hit 2 years after official lift off.” He stated.
Two or three quiet sobs permitted around Elizebeth. She felt horrible for these people. Their family and friends who probably expected them home right about now, would not be seeing them again for at least another 10 years. Once in the ship to go to Pandora, all personal must serve on the planet for a minimum of 5 years meaning that the whole travel there, stay, and travel back would take 15 years all together. These people may not have any living family members for when they returned home, most would die from old age by then.
“How the fuck have we successfully gotten here after all these years then?” Another voice shouted, this time with more anger.
Usually, swearing at a higher up would result in punishment, but Elizebeth suspected that the Lieutenant would understand why everyone was freaking out. And just like she hoped for, he didn’t shout, nor punish. He simply responded.
“With so few troops, the government were unsure whether to spend more money on the retrieval of this ship. luckily, a space station located a few light years near our then off course ship managed to set us back on course. It was miraculous that we are still flying now. The damages are catastrophic.”
Ouch. The government were unsure? Annoyingly, Elizabeth understood why the government had their doubts. With a dying planet they definitely had more important things to be spending money on.
“Shit.” A voice whispered to the side of her, the voice was laced in turmoil.
“I can’t believe this. I promised my daughter I would be home for her 21st birthday!” A man bemoaned. Elizabeth imagined if everyone was not in zero gravity, that they all would have collapsed to the floor by now.
“My mum…she doesn’t have long to live now. Oh my god I promised her 15 years!” A Middle aged women vocalised loudly to herself.
There were a few, a small group of people who just stood still, faces blank but less with shock and more with acceptance. These people, these were the people who didn’t care about who would be waiting back on earth for them, these people were the ones who had nobody waiting for them. Who came in the first place because they didn’t have to worry about loved ones who would age substantially before they came back home. Elizabeth was apart of these few people, with her mum dead, her uncle Tommy dying, and her only other family being her other uncle, being light years away, she decided to follow in her two uncles footsteps.
“We understand that some of you singed up for 15 years, serving 5 and sleeping 10. And because of the situation we have all been put in, the government are allowing this once only for those who want to be sent home, to stay on the ship. Those who want to fight still for those back at home for a better life, to leave the ship with me. You will not be punished if you stay, and you will get home in 5 years.”
Elizabeth saw the nods of the soldiers, some who looked ready to stay and others, ready to leave.
It turned out that only half of the soldiers on the ship left the ship when it landed. Elizabeth alongside those people did so because there was nothing left for her back on Earth, her mother was gone, her father who was a deadbeat alcoholic had probably died by now too. This new world, it was a new life.
But, Unlike the rest of these people who came to colonise this place, Elizabeth didn’t care for it. Imagine some alien colonising Earth? Elizabeth could imagine most wouldn’t be so pleased with that outcome at all. No, she was only here to find her uncle and in some ways, her best friend.
She was 15 when he was 22, in a way, Jake and Tommy where like her older brothers. Tommy being the smart one taught her about the world around her, which she liked to think was the reason that she cared about being a somewhat good person. Jake on the other hand being a marine, taught her how to defend herself, and unknowingly how to defend others.
Elizabeth had a memory from when she was 10 and Jake was 17, she had ran away from home after an argument with her mum and Jake searched for her all night until he found her on a bench on a side walk. She woke up to him carrying her and muttering that she could have gotten herself killed. At the time, Elizabeth found Jake bossing her around annoying. But now, she wished she had the guy bossing her around again because she didn’t have that parental figure anymore, not since her mother died just after Jake left.
God she missed her mum and Tommy.
Now landed and still in the hanger bay, Elizabeth alongside the rest of the soldiers attached the Exopack that she heard so much about back in training onto her face. They had fake ones that each solider had to use in training to copy what it would really be like in Pandora.
Now secured on her face, the metal hatch began to open revealing Bridgehead, though only on the landing strip, Elizabeth could see the newly sprouted city half in construction. People in the far distant seemed to be working, using massive machines to walk around in and carry heavy things with.
Murmurs of excitement began filling the hanger bay and although pretty alone with not anyone to talk to, Elizabeth pulled a small grin with her own excitement. The city was ugly, but the air looked so clear and the city didn’t look dirty like the one she lived in before.
“Welcome to Pandora troops. stay near, we don’t want any strays that may get eaten by the wildlife here.” The lieutenant warned, making everyone give a small nervous laugh, Elizabeth included.
Leaving the hanger, the group of soldiers walked along the landing strips causing a few cheers from nearby workers. It must of been because they where stuck in space for so long.
Straight forward was the city, but far, far away, past the dead zone, Elizabeth could make out greenery and mountains. It made her still for a second. She hadn’t ever seen land that green ever.
“Keep up Marine!” The lieutenant barked snapping Elizabeth back. She jogged back to the group and kept at the back.
The closer they got to what Elizabeth presumed was the military sector, the people’s clothes changed from Hi vis orange worker jackets, to be replaced with greens and greys.
Army personal stopped to check out the new fresh meat. Some whistled at the group boyishly, others clapped applauding the Marines on there long trip.
“Took you people long enough!” Someone shouted loudly, making everyone laugh. They weren’t wrong there.
The Lieutenant led the new group through different white corridors where Elizabeth was able to sneak a peak into the cafeteria, the medic station, a few office rooms and more until finally arriving into a large conference room. The room had around 300 desks, a small reminder of the people who decided to go back home, the vacant chairs at the back made Elizabeth wonder if she made the right decision.
The window ahead showed the city in it’s construction, large buildings begging to fill the sky half finished. It made Elizabeth slightly uncomfortable, could they not of at least made it more eco friendly?
“Welcome to bridge head people.” The Lieutenant nodded. He seemed to be setting his presentation up. People’s faces frowned slightly at the name. Elizabeth was sure they would be landing in Hells gate, not whatever Bridgehead was. Also, they were told that the place would be more of a facility rather than a city. The past fifteen years must of changed a lot of things that was for sure.
“I thought we were located to hells gate Sir?” A women’s voice spoke up, addressing the Lieutenant who looked up from his tablet.
“That is correct Marine. Originally Hells gate was our main centre for human life. But I have been informed when the ship got back in contact with Earth that the facility had been overran by the natives of this place. You’ve read about them, Na’avi.”
People eyes widened at this information, the Natives were stronger than they had been told about, way stronger if they were an actual major threat.
“Permission to speak?” A voice called out.
“We haven’t began yet, so carry on.” The higher up nodded.
“If the humans were overran, then where could they of possibly gone too? I mean, was there a secret base located somewhere then?” The males voice pondered aloud.
Elizabeth was also thinking the same thought, she was happy someone asked or else she would of.
“I think I’ll leave that question to our guest, General Admore.” The Lieutenant hovered his eyes towards the door, causing the majority of the group to follow his eyes over to a women standing in the doorway.
Elizabeth stared at the women’s appearance. She looked strict, her eyes gave that away. Her stature was quite small though but her strong posture made up for it greatly. She wore green camouflage wear, with a matching green hat that showed her military rank off.
She walked across the room with her hands securely held behind her back and gave a nod of thanks to the lieutenant. He saluted her before positioning himself near the wall so she could ‘have the stage’.
“It is great to see those who have decided to stay despite being away from home for so long, that takes much strength and resilience.”
Everyone’s appearance was still, this women looked high in ranks and nobody wanted to make a fool of themselves to her.
“Fifteen years. A lot has happened whilst you have been up in space. Times have changed, I’m hoping each and everyone of you get up to date with the new memo and stick to it. Insubordination will not be tolerated. Especially, working with the wrong team.”
Elizabeth wondered what the General meant by ‘the wrong team.’ It seems others did too because the Admore seemed to quickly pick up on the confusion.
“We have had a small amount of people joining the natives of this planet, although this was years ago, we fundamentally had to flee this planet due to the spies outing our plans and using their humanity as an advantage against the rest of our own. We have lost progress people, too much. If we do not make this planet habitable for humans soon, there will be no more hope for Humanity.”
“Permission to speak.” A voice called out, although, Elizabeth found herself being the one who raised the question. She didn’t know what she was doing.
“…permission granted.”
“You say there were spies within Hells gate at the time. Who were these people? Were they terrorists?”
She added the last bit to not sound obvious that she was asking to see if it was someone she knew, rather a certain guy who had a good heart. But it was a hard one with Jake. Tommy? Yes Elizabeth would immediately suspect Tommy to be the spy as he and many of the scientists spoke about the wonders of Na’vi all of the time. Tommy would frequently tell Elizabeth about his research of who the natives of Pandora really were like, how they were similar to humans with empathy, skills and a sense of family. He was so excited to go to Pandora, it was a shame his dream never came true.
Jake on the other hand was done with his Marine days when he had that tragic accident that caused him to be wheelchair bound. He never was the same, he seemed more closed off and reserved when he came back from the hospital. That was why she was so surprised when Jake told her that he was going to travel to Pandora. Elizabeth was upset, she hated how spoilt she acted, it was Jakes life if he wanted to go and Elizabeth shouldn’t have tried to stop him. She was just so upset about Tommy and when Jake left only her mum would be around.
That was only a year ago in her eyes. Despite it really being fifteen yet as soon as Jake left, Elizabeth’s mom died, cancer they told her, it was left for too long and Elizabeth knew that her mother would of known but didn’t tell anyone as they had been poor. Doctors bills were that expensive that people usually just sucked it up. But Cancer? Elizabeth was more than depressed, everyone either died or left. She was alone. All but one person was left, her Uncle. She had nothing else to fight for but to serve and thanks to her lessons with Jake in combat, the army let her train despite her clearly looking too young to.
“These people are a few individuals, a few scientists, an aircraft driver, and their leader. Jake Sully.”
Oh. Oh shit. She had to keep a straight face, nothing to give herself away. Jake? It was just a silly thought. She didn’t really think that Jake had led the movement. How could this be? Was he still alive? Oh god, please say that he was still alive. Elizabeth was just glad that Sully was a common name, or else they probably would of sent her back on the ship or used her to lure Jake to them, if he even still felt that way towards his Niece. Had Jake gone like really rogue?
“It was a good question you asked Marine. Because I would like to warn each and everyone of you that the natives, especially the Sully clan, through some sort of Na’vi Science experiment, has transfered Sully’s memories into his Avatar without the need for his human form anymore and he now roams with the natives using guns. So it’s not all bow and arrows anymore soldiers, the enemy has other ways of fighting close to our own.”
His human body is gone?
Jakes physical form, it was gone? Died? Elizabeth suddenly felt very sick, the voice of the General faded away as her mind drifted to the fact that her uncle, her uncle that was so much like a Brother, he was gone? No. Not gone, more like was transformed? Into the Natives here? So much information thrown at her at once made deciphering it hurt, more emotional than anything.
“And that is why, as your first test of strength against the everlasting danger of the forest, I need some volunteers who can prove themselves to everyone.”
The voice of the General fazed back as the words she spoke caught her attention quickly.
“Please step forward if you feel ready for the challenge. Some of you may want to settle in first, I get that. After what’s happened to you I don’t blame you. But for those ready, missions will always be available for your taking”
A female stepped forward first, then a male, accompanied by another male.
“3? I’m impressed soldiers. Be ready for 06:00 on the dot tomorrow-“
Another pair of feet stepped forward, as if on autopilot mode a girl with an expression that was unreadable stood towards the General with a salute fastened to her head.
She had to find him, to ask him if he even remembered her now that he had changed. she had to speak to her Uncle even if it was to say goodbye. Please don’t let it be to say goodbye. The forest was the place to start, no more waiting, no more sleeping for fifteen years she needed to get out. And to actually walk in a real forest was an added dream come true!.
So that girl was Elizabeth Sully, and she was ready to take on the world to find her uncle Jake.

Chapter Text
After the initial meeting was over, the five soldiers were assigned to the same sleeping quarters to (in the generals own words) ‘gain each others trust and become a team.’
As they all entered the room, Elizabeth eyed the 2 bunk beds that surrounded the outer space of the room. The walls were a dark grey and the beds were dark green. ‘Right on brand’ Elizabeth thought to herself.
She took the bottom bunk with a women taking the top. Being close near someone the same gender did make Elizabeth feel better about sharing a room with guys.
“I guess we should introduce ourselves?” A voice of a male, early 40s, with a mostly shaved head like every other male due to military requirements spoke with a small smile.
The other people who had been unpacking their belongings including Elizabeth looked over to the male. A small awkward silence filled the room.
“I’ll start then. Names Lucas.” The same man carried on. The hair that was beginning to grow back was brown, with small hints of grey peaking through. He had a small scar near his lip and he looked tuff, Abs showed under his military vest.
Elizabeth listened and gave a warm smile to the man so he knew that she was at least welcoming. Another voice coughed to catch the groups attention, it was the women who was now stood near Elizebeth. Her hair was in a tight bun like Elizabeth’s own due to again, military rules. It was jet black. She looked to be about late twenties.
“Names Rue. And you all must be just as crazy to be doing this mission.” She smiled baring her teeth into a grin. She spoke with a confidence that already gave her personality away to Elizabeth, she seemed very outgoing.
“Amen sister!” Spoke a male with a just as loud personality. The way they both spoke made Elizabeth think how they could be related if not for the fact that the man was dark skinned and the woman was not. His hair that was extremely short exposed a few black curls, he looked to be early thirties.
He carried on,
“You can call me carter.” He spoke to the crowd but Elizabeth could tell he was saying so more to the women, Rue. She only gave him a small nod in return.
The two males gave each other a welcoming fist bump.
All eyes fell onto Elizabeth. She realised she needed to act older to fool these people, Elizabeth liked to think that she acted perhaps older than she really was anyway so she didn’t need to be too concerned, after all being alone on the streets for a year would change anyone. She didn’t want to think about those days, so she ignored her thoughts.
With a quick inhale she knew there was no point dwelling on it.
“Hello. My name is Elizabeth. It’s nice meeting you all.” She greeted.
Elizabeth froze, hating the way how formal she said hello. She waited to be called out or to be greeted with suspicious glares but non of that happened. Instead, a gentle hand was placed on her shoulder from the women.
“Great to meet you too.” She welcomed.
Elizabeth looked up at the women, who was only a few inches taller and gave her a warm smile back.
The older man, Lucas, took a step forward to give her a fist bump too. Elizabeth grinned at the gesture and returned a fist bump back.
“I think we will all make a badass team, don’t you say Rue?” Carter said, aiming his question at the woman again.
“We’ll have to see.” She responded, with a glint of agreement in her eyes.
Elizabeth wanted to roll her eyes. It was obvious Carter had an interest in Rue. How it would blossom was something Elizabeth wanted to see, free entertainment and all that.
After talking for a while the group retreated to their beds. They had to be up early after all, and non of them wanted to not be alert when going into Pandora territory.
Whilst Lucas seemed to be going through a rough plan that they had spoke about earlier for tomorrow’s mission, Rue was watching quietly some old reality tv programs that she must of downloaded and brought with her. Carter was fast asleep, his snoring being evident of that.
“He’s a loud sleeper.” Elizabeth whispered over to Lucas so not to distract Rue from her program and not to wake up the other loud man.
“You can say that again, kid.” He looked up from his tablet, and snickered quietly.
Elizabeth almost frowned at the word ‘kid.” the thought that she could be exposed for being younger and potentially being sent back to Earth or made to wait two years until she was eighteen in the city crossed her mind momentarily. she didn’t worry too much about the name though, she must of looked young to the older male and even if the others called her it they would be saying so thinking she was 18 or 19, younger than them. It was a common term used by older marines in the army after all, right?
“Want me to throw a pillow at him?” She asked quietly.
“Go ahead, I won’t stop you.”
“Me neither.” Spoke Rue who although Elizebeth couldn’t see what face she was pulling, definitely meant it wholeheartedly.
Elizabeth laughed quietly and reached into her bag next to her to retrieve her favourite device. An IPod. It was popular for poor people to own one as they were still selling them despite how old the technology behind them where (100+ years old), it was cheap for that reason so the businesses kept it up for sale as many poorer people could afford them.
Elizabeth’s own was white and was gifted to her by her mother. On the back were worn out stickers gifted by Jake and Tommy. She remembered insisting for only stickers for her birthday despite the twins asking her if that was the only thing she wanted. Even though she was 13 when she was given the IPod she knew that money was always a background issue, although less with the twins as one was a scientist and the other a marine, Elizabeth wasn’t picky.
Elizabeth plugged her earphones into the device and put on her playlist that was her favourite. ‘Late 1900s, Early 2000 tunes’ it was a genre that she, her mother, Tommy and Jake used to love listening and singing too. The songs weren’t all doom and gloom like a lot of songs had been now. Some were, but most where meaningful and funny, others were loving and calming, some had faster tunes and others were slower in tempo.
She shuffled the songs.
‘Hey ya!’ By outkast is now playing.
Being in the dark and listening to familiar songs made her feel like she wasn’t really light years away from home and that she was actually back on Earth, in her small room with her mother not far and with Jake and Tommy just a phone call away.
She closed her eyes and used her finger to feel the stickers on the back of her IPod, outlines of sparkling animal faces that thirteen year old her loved so much. The love for wildlife still strong within her, Elizabeth loved the silly stickers still. But she also didn’t have the heart to take them off when she was older because they were from people she looked up too.
With those nice thoughts and with the song changing too ‘kids by current joys’ she slipped into sleep.

——————
The smell of freshly made coffee and the sound of a biscuit tin opening was what Elizabeth was welcomed in to as she entered the small living area. The tv was on in the background with some sort of game show that her uncle used to watch, the sofa was taken up by the man, myth and the legend himself. Uncle Tommy was sitting with Elizabeth’s mum, you could tell they were siblings with the way they both squabbled about which answer was correct to win the prize money on the show.
The main lights in the room were off, only the calm ambiance of the lamp and vanilla scented candles produced any light as it was now dark outside after a long day of work for everyone. Elizabeth grinned at the sight of her mother and uncle trying to convince the other that they were right. Elizabeth loved her mother to bits but her uncle was a scientist, and the question wasn’t about sport or English which her mother knew more in, but of plant life in ecosystems…basically she was fairly sure her uncle would come out victorious this time.
Elizabeth waved and said hello to the pair who waved back, eyes still stuck on the TV although.
As she walked past the tv she made it into the kitchen, it was joined to the living area and small in size. The whole apartment was small but they were lucky, after all a lot of people in the city had nowhere at all, too many people and not enough housing.
A voice from inside the room called out quickly,
“Catch.”
Elizabeth raised both hands awkwardly and caught something in them just in time. It was crumbly and sweet. Elizabeth’s smile grew as she got a better look at the treat in her hand.
“You managed to find the chocolate chip flavour!” Chocolate just seemed to go higher in price each year as coco beans began to lessen, it was something Elizabeth would usually only have on her birthday but whenever uncle Tommy and Jake visited, they would always bring a pack of cookies.
“Pfft, Don’t pretend you couldn’t hear the biscuit tin open from the other room Lizzy-lu.” He scoffed at his niece.
Elizabeth hummed,
“You can’t prove that jakey-poo.”
Jake raised an eyebrow at the name and Elizabeth shook her head. As if he didn’t just call her something similar but oh nooo, now he’s going to act offended.
“How was work?” The teen asked her uncle as she slid onto the high chair in front of him.
“Never work unless you have too.” He sighed, reaching for a biscuit to join Elizabeth in eating.
“Unless I marry rich, your words of wisdom aren’t looking very wisdomey.” She responded, taking another bite of cookie.
“That’s why i usually leave the clever speeches up to Tommy.”
“Ah yes, because Jake only know sleep, eat, fight, gun, repeat.” Elizabeth spoke in a voice like a cave man from a cartoon, heavily mocking her uncle who had an annoyed grin now present.
“You know I can still take your cookies back so only your mum gets to eat them, right?”
Elizabeth’s eyes widened, he wouldn’t dare!
No hold up, this is Jake Sully she was thinking about of course he would.
“Uhh, you didn’t let me finish did you though-!”
“Well you stopped talking for about five seconds and that usually means that anyone would have finished their sentence.”
“-what I was going to say was that it isn’t a bad thing, your not completely stupid! Wait that was worded wrongly..- You have good taste in cookie flavourings and you're probably more stronger than Tommy!”
Jake nodded slowly at the attempt of Elizabeth rewriting her wrongs until he put a finger up to shush her.
“Probably the most strong?”
“Oops did I say that? Pfft I meant to say DEFINITELY.”
Jaked nodded once more.
“That is the nicest thing you have ever said to me kid. I guess you can keep your cookies for now.”
“These cookies really do feel like bargaining chips right now…man blackmail has never tasted better.” She sighed.
Just then the pair could hear loud cheering and booing at the same time, they both looked at each other with a grin as they made their way back into the living area. There sat an annoyed looking Clara Sully and a smug Tommy Sully.
“AND WHO WAS RIGHT?”
“This show obviously is only focussing on one opinion I mean c’mon!”
“I SAID WHO WAS RIGHT ONCE AGAIN?”
“Pfft whatever…”
“Don’t be a sore loser now Clara, your meant to be older then him.” Jake grinned, seeming to enjoy the Clara bully train.
“Jake i wouldn’t get involved unless you are gunna partake in the game.” Clara side eyed her little brother.
Jake put his hands up in defence.
“I wouldn’t uncle Jake, I once played with them and nearly started crying when they laughed at my face for being wrong for like ten minutes. I was EIGHT.”
Jake smirked at his niece not at all surprised with her memory.
“Whattt? That is simply not true dear- Tommy she’s just being overdramatic isn’t she?”
“Yup, completely going over the top.”
“Dramatic or not, I am not joining in thank you very much.”
“Come on now-“
“Mum, uncle Tommy..please for the love of all things everywhere- turn the damn channel over!”
———————
The next day rolled around quickly and the squad made their way hastily to the cafeteria to grab breakfast before the mission.
Food was piled onto plates due to the lack of real food for 15 years and everyone devoured the mini feast.
Elizabeth ate her toast with jam on first, then her egg, tomato, and mushrooms quickly following. She hadn’t had food this good in a while.
“Wonder if we will get to try real Pandora meat and not this fake stuff.” Carter groaned, using his fork to pick up a piece of fake sausage before taking a bite of it.
“Bet it tastes fresh.” Rue replied, clearly daydreaming of herself eating some of it.
“This stuff ain’t too bad.” Jacob shrugged, going in for another bite of his fake bacon.
“Sure man, if your definition of ‘ain’t too bad’ is disgusting.” Carter deadpanned.
“You’re such a moaner Carter.” Elizabeth laughed at the clearly hangry man. He slowly turned his gaze to her and raised an annoyed eyebrow.
“You’re vegetarian. You don’t get a say in this.”
Elizabeth jokingly scoffed.
“Better then being known as a complainer.”
“Ughhhh.” Was the man’s only reply before bracing himself for another bite of fake meat.
—————-
After eating the team made their ways to the hanger bay where heavy construction vehicles and flying crafts hung over the group like giants. Stunned silence came over everyone for a second as they walked past the impressive machines in a daze.
Humans in amplified suits (amplified mobility platforms) thumped along past Elizabeth making her whole body jolt with the heavy steps of the machinified people.
Carter let out an impressed whistle,
“Think they’ll let me have ago on that?”
“No. But I think they’ll let me.” Rue corrected, with full belief of herself.
“Please sweetheart, in your dreams. Me on the other hand-!”
The whole group halted suddenly as a group of troops stormed past them in formation, amplified suited people also followed ahead.
“You cant let your guard down for one second can you?” Rue huffed out, scratching the back of her head.
Elizabeth laughed. Rue wasn’t wrong. Every machine here was extremely deadly and It made her slightly on edge for that reason.
“We’re like damn ants in here.” Elizabeth huffed out after the group began walking again.
“True that. How people make all this-“ Jacob gestured around the large bay with his arms,
“Their norm? I don’t have a clue. Most people back on earth will never see these machines in their life time..”
“I think it’s kinda cool, but also-“ Rue started,
“Kinda creepy.” Carter finished.
“Wow, you guys actually finish each other’s sentences. cute.” Elizabeth teased making both male and female slightly blush.
“Pfft you actually made them speechless. Since meeting these two since only yesterday thats actually a first.” Jacob chuckled.
“Shut it you two!” Carter shouted, voice filled with embarrassment.
“Was that a voice crack I heard in there?” Rue suddenly decided to jump in, teasing the man even more.
“That’s it! I’m walking ahead from you fuckers!” Carter declared, speeding up his walk to get away.
“Aww Carter! Don’t be so offended!” Rue laughed, jogging towards him.
Both woman and man now a few feet ahead, left just Jacob and Elizabeth alone to walk over to the transportation.
“So, kid.” The man started. Elizabeth looked up to acknowledge the man, he looked in thought, not really looking at her or anything in particular.
“You sure you’re gunna be alright on this trip?” He asked slowly.
Elizabeth’s eyes drifted to the floor near the man’s shoes. She thought she was, and sure she was a bit nervous but it was nothing she couldn’t deal with.
“Sure I am, are you?” She asked back.
“Yeah. Nothin I haven’t done before.” He shrugged
“Entering a new planets forest with new wildlife that could kill us at any moment, but, just another friday for you huh?” She quipped with a small grin spreading across her face.
The man huffed out a chuckle of his own, quickly Ruffing Elizabeth’s hair which was tied up so tightly and sprayed with so much hair spray the action did little.
“If you get unsure of the situation, just let me or one of the others know yeah? We’re a team now so we gotta have each others back.”
Elizabeth grinned at this. It felt nice to have someone to rely on.
“Ditto.” she nodded back.
Soon on the flying craft, the team sat themselves down and watched as the hunk of metal lifted into the sky revealing Bridgeheads true size. Though in construction still, half sprouted buildings towered in the skies, nearly as high as the flying craft had reached. People became almost like ants as they flew further and further away from civilisation and into the unknown.
After about half an hour Elizabeth looked back out of the window and her eyes gazed at something she had only seen in dreams. Green, and not just a little, a lot. so much green! Elizabeth outwardly shouted ‘wow!’ Alerting the rest of the group to look up from their devices. Everyone was simply too amazed to speak. Tall, vine like trees took up so much of the land below, small openings underneath the shrubs revealed colourful plants that were so vibrant that Elizabeth had to blink to make sure she was seeing what she really was seeing.
After landing, the group watched as the flying craft took back up into the sky and leaving them to fend for themselves against the will of Mother Nature. They landed in an area that had no forest, to give them a better vantage point against animals that may creep up on them.
Elizabeth still in her own peace because of where she was, reached down and felt the blades of grass like plants against her finger tips.
“Holy shit.” She shook her head disbelievingly. She had made it.
“This place is somethin’ else ain’t it?” Jacob grinned, looking around at the small area of grass and tree line ahead.
“Great place for a massive car park.” Carter spoke up.
Everyone looked away from whatever they were basking in and shot him a look that made him burst out laughing.
“I’m joking! God damn!”
Elizabeth tried hard to repress her laugh but she soon succumbed.
“Joke or not I still want to punch you.” Rue stated.
“Why the hell do you wanna do that?!”
“You’re just punchable.” She shrugged back.
“Don’t feel frightened by my good lucks, sweetheart.” He suddenly smirked, changing his offended look.
“I feel like I keep interrupting them, I’m fully tempted to escape into the forest to give them privacy.
“I wish kid.” He sighed.
“I will take being forest food over this.” She declared.
After trekking through the forest all day, the team finally set up camp up top a small hill with lots of vantage point.
Eclipse soon came but annoyingly the team didn’t get to see much with how dense the trees were packed making the sky almost unseeable.
Elizabeth sat near the edge of the hill away from the group who were talking amongst themselves with a warm fire set up and watched in glee as the forest lit up so beautifully at night.
“Wow.” Rue hummed behind Elizabeth. Elizabeth looked up and patted the floor next to her indicating for Rue to sit. She did so and looked out with Elizabeth at the light show below.
“Cool how everything lights up.”
Elizabeth nodded, still looking out.
“Bioluminescent plant life at its finest.” She quietly spoke, not wanting to draw any possible threat towards the group by shouting.
“You know your Pandora science, don’t you?” Rue praised.
“Just the basics. My uncle liked to go on about how pretty it all was on the drones humans on Earth used to send out to capture it.” She smiled, thinking very much of Tommy.
“He sounds nice. He a scientist here now?” The woman asked.
Elizabeth’s face didn’t alter, nor did she get sad. In fact, hearing someone talking about her Uncle gave her much pride.
She also didn’t want to give too much away about her family, being who Jake now was.
“He would have been.” Was all she said. Elizabeth could sense that Rue looked over probably to see if she made Elizabeth upset. But Elizabeth didn’t show any sorrow, just reminiscence.
“Want to get back to the fire? I’ve got a great campfire story I tell people, it involves explosions.”
Elizabeth looked at the women with a sudden interest and nodded.
“oh definitely! Sounds good.”
She hoped she could talk more about Tommy to Jake when she met him again.

Chapter Text
Sleeping on the hard ground with nothing but a small tent and a sleeping bag to keep you warm was uncomfortable at that.
Sleeping with a mask on also made sleeping in any position other than your back a challenge. But all complaints in Elizabeth’s mind fell away as she unzipped her tent to be met with the beautiful green on Pandora.
After cleaning her teeth with her small travel toothbrush and washed with the ‘washing wipes’ that was provided to her, she then tightened her bun up again and sprayed down any stray hair against her scalp.
Elizabeth stepped out of her tent, the time on her device showed at 6am. She was up half an hour early. She didn’t mind too much, it was nice listening to the echos of animals far away and the gentle breeze in the trees.
It was a humming noise that pulled her away from the calm. It came from behind Carters tent. Elizabeth walked towards the noise and quickly realised she wasn’t the only one up.
Carter was sat at the camp fire, he seemed to of set it back up and was preparing some sort of breakfast. His humming stopped when he noticed Elizabeth and was instead replaced with a grin.
“Another early bird I see.”
Elizabeth grinned back, sitting herself down on a log that was being used as a makeshift seat.
“Morning to you too Carter.” She yawned, eyeing up the food that he was making. It smelt good, and on closer inspection it looked like eggs, (fake) bacon and toast.
Carter watched as Elizabeth stared at the meal and laughed.
“I made enough for all of us, SO EAT UP!” He stated, shoving some of the food onto a plastic plate and passing it to her.
“Is it..” she started,
“Yes it’s fake meat! Annoyingly…So eat up you plant eater!”
“Thanks..” Using her nasal cannula to breathe through instead, Elizabeth took off her mask and slowly went in for a bite, waiting for something to taste burnt due to it being cooked in such a way but was pleasantly surprised to be met with tastes that you should taste with the food given. The eggs were cooked perfectly, the fake bacon was not burnt and the toast was golden brown on both sides.
“Mmm!” Elizabeth spoke with a full mouth of toast,
“This is the shit dude!” She gleamed, going in for another bite.
Carter smugly shrugged,
“What can I say? I’m quite the chef you know.”
“Where’d you learn to cook this good?” She asked.
Carter thought for a minute, spatula still in hand.
“S’pose from my dad, he was a chef. He could cook good. I tell you he made the best pasta you could ever eat!”
Elizabeth nodded along.
“He used to make me whatever I asked on the weekends and on my birthday he would make a 4 tiered chocolate cake. Damn how I would kill for some cake right about now.”
“You and me both brother.” She sighed back.
“Bet your dads missing you like hell.” She carried on,
“Maybe if you believe in ghosts. If not, he’s dead so yeah I doubt that kid.”
Elizabeth’s eyes widened at the statement and quickly shook her head.
“Crap, sorry-“
“Relax! My dad and I used to joke about like that all the time. We made a promise we would never stop even if one of us was dead. I basically lured you into that one.”
Elizabeth finally exhaled and allowed her mask to filter through her nose.
A silence fell over the two as Elizabeth began to eat again, she still felt a bit guilty for bringing up someone who had died. sure with Tommy she was okay with it. But with another person it was a whole other story.
“On the contrary, I’m still sorry.” she eventually said.
“Ah, don’t be. It’s okay. Anyway! I’m not good with emotions so if you want me to feel ‘better’ then stop looking all sorrow-‘y’”
Elizabeth raised her eyebrows so they didn’t frown anymore,
“Deal. and I’ll do you one better, I’ll change the subject.”
“I’m listening.” He hummed, crunching down on his own toast whilst looking at her.
“What do you think our first threat out here is gunna be?”
“Hm, now if I was Jacob I would be saying ‘If we follow the plan there will be no threat!’ But realistically? Either Rue or Jacob will get eaten by a creature.”
“Why only them?” Elizabeth questioned.
“Jacob because he will be so sure nothing bad will happen that when it does go wrong he will faint on the spot. And Rue? That’s just because I’ll sacrifice her if there are any big creatures.”
“Well thanks for not sacrificing me at least dude.” Elizabeth shrugged.
“No problemo.” He winked.
“We making food out here?!” A women’s voice suddenly spoke up making both Carter and Elizabeth jump on the spot.
“Could you be any louder?” Carter groaned.
“Could you be any more of a pussy?” She spoke back, sitting down on another stump near the fire.
Elizabeth handed Rue a plate of the food that Carter had made which she took great fully.
“So, what were you guys talking about?” She asked, digging into her food.
“Well-“
“That Carter was going to sacrifice you if a creature ambushed us.” Elizabeth shrugged, finding it hilarious when Carter slowly side-eyed her due to her outing him.
“Oh did he now?” Rue gazed angrily over to the man whose mouth was wide open.
“Kids lying, I didn’t.” He reassured the women.
“Yeah he did.” A voice from the tent next to them stated.
“You’re up Jacob?!” Carter shouted over to the man inside the tent.
“Yeah. I heard everything.”
“You mean like, Everything?” He laughed nervously.
“Yeah. I was up before all of you, I’m just still in my tent going over plans. Oh, and thanks for believing in me ‘bro’” The man spoke in a way that was hard to know what emotion he was feeling without seeing his face, which was funny to Elizabeth as Carter looked as though he wanted to know if he was in trouble or not.
“Oops.” Was all Elizabeth said, she was trying desperately to hold back a laugh knowing she practically caused all of this.
“You little traitor.” Carter said before taking away the remains of Elizabeth’s plate of food.
“Hey!” She started reaching quickly to retrieve her food but got quickly pushed back on her seat by Carters hand.
“Traitors are not allowed to taste the Devine cuisine of Carters food. Hope you enjoyed what you ate.” He smirked before finishing Elizabeth’s toast.
“Toast was burnt anyways.” She lied, wanting to cry inside as the delicious bread was being eaten in front of her very eyes.
-
After packing up their makeshift camp, the group headed off back into the heart of the forest.
Dense trees became denser, ginormous roots and vines created a parkour’s greatest dream and some roots were so huge that you had to climb over them to get to the other side.
Elizabeth stayed at the back , mainly so she could look at plants and other new things for longer. She wasn’t a big ‘plant person’ but even she had to admit that these were beautiful.
At the start the group was chatty, Elizabeth joined in on the random talks about earth and what parts they used to live on but after hours of gruelling exercise, everyone became more tired and less in the mood to talk.
Elizabeth got so hot at one point that she took her camo jacket off and tied it around her waist, it was humid the deeper they went but despite that there wasn’t a boring moment that went by.
As it came closer to late afternoon, Elizabeth stopped for a moment to grab her water bottle out of her bag. She opened the bottle and held her breath the best she could before lifting up her mask and taking a few large gulps, when she felt herself going lightheaded from the lack of oxygen she quickly secured it back on her face.
A rustling noise came from the right of Elizabeth.
She froze. Only using her eyes to move towards the rustling. Elizabeth kept as still as she could, unsure if it was because she was afraid or if she was being careful about the situation, everything blurred together. Whatever it was it was hiding inside of a large shrub that made seeing it impossible. Elizabeth wanted to shout to her group but was afraid that she would alert the ‘thing’ to pounce.
Slowly. So slowly, she edged herself away from the bush whilst simultaneously turning to face it so she could fight it head on if needed.
Elizabeth felt her throat go tight as she could make out a large beak leaning out of the green. Frighteningly, the creature edged its way out of the bush to reveal the rest of its huge beak and two beady eyes. It looked like a bird, slightly larger than an ostrich, and with smaller wings that indicated it couldn’t fly. It had yellow skin with shades of orange and a flat tail leading down to the ground.
Elizabeth desperately tried to remember what it was called, hoping her uncle had talked to her about it before. An Austrapede? It must be. But she couldn’t remember if it was friendly or not !
All she knew was that she needed to stay still, or else it may feel threatened and try to attack her. It was taller than her, around 4 meters high and only a few feet away from her.
This bird and Elizabeth were simply staring at one another, with the bird turning its head to the side as if to investigate this strange new animal.
After what must of been a minute Elizabeth knew she needed to do something or else they could be like this forever.
“You’re not gunna peck me to death, right?” She spoke quietly, not knowing why she was speaking to the bird like creature. Obviously the bird didn’t respond.
Okay so it didn’t go for her when she spoke at least.
She had a gun on her of course but found herself not wanting to use it on this creature, or any creature unless it being her only choice.
She took another small step back.
The creature didn’t retaliate, it only stared.
She quickly remembered that she had a voice transmission device attached to her ear. She wondered if it was a good idea to call anyone over here now, especially if the bird found them a threat.
But she also realised that they may come running over if they noticed she was gone for too long, so she knew she needed to say something.
Ever so slowly, she placed her hand on her ear to click the device on.
“Easy now.” She muttered to the bird that tilted its head again.
“Guys?” Elizabeth whispered into the device.
“EL?” A voice on the other end, Carter spoke.
“Where’d you run off to kid?” Jacob asked.
“Listen, I can’t talk for too long..” she started.
“Uhh, you’re scaring us here kid.” Rue muttered back.
“A large bird is standing near me, I don’t think it’s aggressive.”
“You don’t think?” Jacob responded back, finding the wording less than reassuring.
“I’m just letting you know to not run or even walk over here, creep if you have too. Don’t do anything to scare this bird. I’ll be fine though, just wait for me.” She muttered quietly.
“Now wait up, you want us to leave you to figure this out on your own?” Rue spoke up, not liking Elizabeth’s independence with the situation.
A silence Filled the radio for a moment until Elizabeth could hear the group about ten meters away.
“Okay. We are near enough that if you need us we can shoot.”
“Holly shit that thing is big!” Carter gasped quietly.
“please don’t shoot unless absolutely necessary.” She reminded them. Still keeping her eyes on the bird she couldn’t actually see the group behind her but she knew they were there.
As slow as she could possibly go, she took step after step back away from the creature until she was now standing close to her group again.
The bird, now seeing how far away Elizabeth was, took a few leaps back now not feeling as on edge itself. When they were far enough away from each other, the bird finally ran off in the opposite direction.
A joint exhale formed from everyone.
“Ok put your guns away.” Jacob urged Rue and Carter who after a moment, did so.
“Fuckkkk.” Rue rubbed her hand against her temple.
“Damn kid, how you didn’t run from the start took some sort of courage.” Jacob sighed.
“Yeah, you’re sort of brave.” Carter grinned, throwing his whole arm over her shoulder.
“More like badass.” Rue corrected placing her hand on Elizabeth’s head and patting it once.
“I should be thanking you guys for staying near when you could have carried on.” Elizabeth smiled.
“What sort of team would we be if we left you now?” Jacob frowned.
“A smart one.” Elizabeth laughed.
-
Night time fell on the group again and Elizabeth found herself eating Carters food again despite him saying she wasn’t allowed to anymore back at breakfast.
“Just take it.” He huffed out, giving her an extra piece of broccoli then anyone else had been given. He must of been being nice because of what happened today, she found the gesture sweet.
The fire was warm and cosy, and Elizabeth listened happily as Rue and Carter Bickered whilst Jacob tried to calm them both down.
—————
She was running, running away from a group of thugs who she had royally pissed off, probably because she had been unknowingly sleeping in their territory.
Their territory was nothing more than a dingy alleyway but she had no other choice, being homeless meant you didn’t have many options for where to rest.
She kept her eyes ahead and she ran so fast that she actually was escaping.
She was lucky this time, next time she may not be.
Elizabeth made her way back towards the RDA training facility that was closest to her in the city. As she made her way there she attempted to rub the grime and dirt from her face so she looked somewhat presentable.
She thought about her mother and how she still couldn’t afford a grave for her, for now she used a stick that had carved in it her name with a heart so she wouldn’t forget the area that she had her laid to rest.
-
The next day came quickly and the group were back walking through the forest once more.
“What exactly are we looking for?” Rue asked to Jacob who was looking down at his device whilst walking up front.
“Any evidence that Na’vi are near.”
“And how do we find this evidence.” Carter asked briefly.
“Tracks. although they are clever enough to hide them most the time. So also structures that have been built by them, arrows that they may of used to kill for food. Things like that can lead us to their whereabouts.” Jacob responded,
“Have you listened to the plans at all?” He shot back at Rue and Carter.
“Uh, yeah?” They both lied.
“If we find them, then what?” Elizabeth asked nervously. She hoped that when it came to finding clues, she could hide them and find her own way to Jake. A foolish hope, but one at that.
“We send any evidence back to headquarters.” Jacob concluded.
“Ah, right.” She nodded back.
“Honestly people read the memo!” Jacob sighed.
They continued on, the day turned later and moods turned tired again.
Just as everyone was talking about setting up for the night again, Carter seemed to of stumbled upon something.
“Over here!” He shouted,
“Is that…?” Rue questioned, eyes wide.
“Yes, bingo!” Carter grinned.
“You found something?” Elizabeth asked, using her flash light on her gun to see better.
“You bet kid. That bet I made with you this afternoon? Well I found something first! Guess you will be making my tent up tonight.”
Elizabeth remembered in her boredom earlier on in the day she that she made a bet with Carter that if one of them found any ‘evidence’ then the other would have to make their tent up for the night. She didn’t actually expect to find anything ever. Her uncle Tommy told her that Na’avi were smart and careful with everything they did. Well she was proven wrong.
“Okay fine.” Yeah no that wasn’t happening. Elizabeth would hide in a tree before making Carters tent. She simply couldn’t be arsed.
Jacob walked up to the foot print and took a picture on his device.
“This is the most anyone has gotten on the Omatikaya clan in years.” He grinned pridefully, sending it off back to headquarters.
Elizabeth felt less than proud, she felt worried for her uncle in that moment. She just hoped she would be the next person to stumble upon something.
“Are we still going to bed?” Rue yawned, stretching her arms up.
“Yeah yeah, we need to wait for instructions anyways.”
“I’ll make the fire.” Elizabeth offered, scouting for fallen branches to use.
When the fire was finally made and Carter eventually gave up on making Elizabeth make his tent, they all sat down near the warmth of the camp fire for a few hours.
“Rue, people cannot actually die from boredom!” Elizabeth laughed at her annoyed older friend on the other side of the fire.
“Sure they can! I nearly did!” She retorted pointing back at Elizabeth.
Jacob was completely unfazed with the conversation as he wrote a report of the day on his device happily.
“Oh really?” Elizabeth spoke with sarcasm laced in her voice.
“I was at the bank, attempting to get a mortgage-“
“Pfft in this era? You’ll have better luck saving the planet” Jacob spoke up, looking straight at Rue.
“Go back to your nerdy work old man.” She waved Jacob away, making the man shrug.
“And I kid you not, I was waiting for 4 damn hours! I tell you what, whilst I was on that chair my body went limp from lack of exercise and my mind was replaying my life before my very eyes.” She concluded, shaking at the obvious bad memories.
“I believe you.” Carter declared, who was sat next to Rue.
“Stop kissing Rues arse Carter.” Elizabeth rolled her eyes.
“Yeah Carter, stop kissing my ass.”
“What?! I was sticking up for you!” Carter shouted, turning to Rue completely.
“I know.” Rue grinned at the frowning man.
“Sounds clingy to me dude.” Elizabeth muttered quietly enough for Carter to hear.
“That’s it kid! You need to be humbled!” With that promise, the man suddenly stood up and headed straight towards Elizabeth.
“Uh oh.” She opened her eyes wider as he came closer.
Elizabeth jumped up from her seat and ran to the other side of the fire. Carter who was still on the other side, followed Elizabeth when she tried to run in a direction, she would get cut off over and over again.
“Uh guys? HELP?” She shouted over to her team. Jacob was still not looking up from his device and Rue was sat lazily back.
“Nah I’m enjoying the show.” She grinned.
“And I’m prettyyy busy.” Jacob mumbled, distracted by his work.
Elizabeth looked back at the man who was now stood in front of her with a grin forming across his face. She didn’t notice him before it was too late!
Carter gave Elizabeth a quick wave before using his foot to trip her up, Elizabeth buckled under the fall but her arm got grabbed by his hand.
“Check mate.” He smirked before pulling her back up. Now as the winner he strolled back over to his stool.
“That was for not making my tent AND- being annoying.”
Elizabeth let out a loud sigh and walked back around to her seat, as she passed Carter she opened her water bottle behind him and dunked her fingers into the liquid, in a quick motion she fake sneezed and flicked the water on the back of his head.
“WHAT THE FUCK-“ the man spun around to face Elizabeth.
Elizabeth and Rue laughed loudly as Carter wiped the water off his head.
“I’m wearing a mask and you still thought I sneezed on you.” Elizabeth laughed again.
Carter quickly grabbed his water bottle and flicked some of its contents back on her. Elizabeth gasped as the cold water got splashed on her arms.
“You-“ she grinned at the other now grinning man and grabbed her water bottle again, unscrewing the lid and flicking water back, soon with Rue joining in at some point, a small water fight began. the three ran around the camp fire, throwing and dodging flicks of water from one another.
Rue aimed for Carters head and flicked her fingers, only to accidentally splash Jacob. Slowly the man looked up at the now still woman.
“Uhh-“ she took a step back.
Jacob gently placed his device down and rummaged in his bag. Out came his water, by that time Rue had already ran behind her tent.
That night, the team went to bed thirsty.
They used up a quarter of their water supply and now had to ration out the remaining water.
Oops.
Notes:
Whose print was that?
All I know, is sooner than later we will find out.
P.s I forgot to inform in the chapter that everyone is eating with nasal cannula’s. That is how they eat without their masks. Sorry again! I have since tweaked the chapter a tiny bit so you get told it once at the start!!
Chapter 4: Confession
Summary:
“Why would you think that?” She managed to force out. this was it. She had no idea what was going to happen next but the team definitely hated her now. She didn’t know what to do. Should she run? Where was there to go? She didn’t have anywhere to go!

Chapter Text
Two days had passed since Carter had come across the mysterious foot print but since then, everything had been radio silence.
The only form of communication they had been given was from a man named ‘Colonel Quaritch’. Who had sent a report of congratulations to the team, apparently he would be getting in touch soon.
The group had been instructed to follow the direction that the print had been walking in, since then, that’s all they had been doing.
“We’re walking aimlessly here like a bunch of cows looking for grass.” Rue sighed out loudly, trekking through the deep parts of the forest.
“That was very descriptive Rue, Im proud of you.” Elizabeth cooed at the already agitated women.
She couldn’t blame her for her current mood. The team had only one mission, and that was to walk in a straight line and hope they just stumbled upon something. It was getting incredibly boring, like a hike that had no end point in sight.
Carter was just as bad, complaining as the days went on as if they were teenagers, Elizabeth should be acting like them if anything, she was the actual teen here.
“Why haven’t we been sent back yet? It’s like they enjoy depriving us of the comfort of bedding.”
Deciding to ignore the two complainers, because if not she felt as though she would soon break and join them, she wondered over to Jacob. The man was walking behind the group, scouting every inch of the area as they walked.
“Found anything yet Sherlock Holmes?” Elizabeth asked.
“If I did, you would all know about it I promise you kid.” He sighed shaking his head.
Good. Elizabeth didn’t want anyone to find anymore clues except her.
Elizabeth spoke a little more to the man until she decided to walk ahead so she would be the first to find anything. Idly, she spaced herself about 10 metres ahead of the group.
“Okay I’m calling a break!” Carter spoke up tiredly.
Nobody complained and in-fact, all felt the same way so after finding higher up ground, (that being some ridiculously large roots that formed a sitting area) they sat down for a short while.
Elizabeth helped with starting the fire and then stood herself up.
“I’ll be back in a bit.” Elizabeth called out to her team who knew already that meant ‘going to the toilet’
A few nods and ‘okays’ rang as Elizabeth found a large enough tree to relieve herself behind without being seen. She began undoing her zip when she noticed a sharp twig stuck in the tree, Elizabeth looked up at the object which was high above in the wood and upon further inspection, realised it had feathers attached to it.
Elizabeth’s eyes widened as she realised that this wasn’t simply a twig, but an arrow. Only one species native to this forest could make these, Na’vi.
Now all of a sudden not feeling in the mood to wee from the shock of finding such a thing. Elizabeth suddenly walked in the opposite direction without looking back. There was no way Na’vi could make the same mistake twice, no. They were making a trap. They had to be. There was no other reasoning unless Tommy was completely wrong about the stealth that Na’vi kept to.
The Na’vi were probably hoping that she tell her group of her finding, to lead them to the tree again so they could get ambushed. But no. She had already figured that out. Elizabeth wished they knew that she personally wasn’t trying to expose them, but speak to one of their men. There was no way of telling them though, if she spoke they may not understand her and Elizabeth’s team may hear, she couldn’t think of another way and so quickly made her way back to her team not wanting to be shot on the spot.
Elizabeth’s eyes shifted uncomfortably around the area as the others lulled into a calm chatter, one Elizabeth didn’t want to join in on. She felt that she was being watched more than ever, or was this all in her mind? Maybe it had all been coincidences? She didn’t know anymore. All she did know was that she could feel herself becoming nauseous from the anxiety she only just realised she felt.
“Everything okay El?” Rue asked, speaking quietly enough so not to embarrass Elizabeth in front of the others.
Elizabeth looked at Rue and nodded quickly.
“Mhm, doin’ good. Are you?” She asked with a slight tremble in her words.
Rue frowned at this and shuffled a little closer to speak quieter.
“It’s okay to be nervous. I won’t make fun of you, swear.” She grinned sympathetically at the teen.
Elizabeth looked down at her shoes that were now covered in mud from the long hours of hiking, trying to calm herself. She knew she was prone to anxiety, but she usually could hide it well enough. She seriously needed to get her act together if she hoped to see her uncle again, and that started with acting okay.
“No if I’m honest I feel really cold? And I know it’s like, really warm. BUT. I have been referred to as a reptile before so shit, maybe I’m just cold blooded.” She lied.
Elizabeth felt her heart go a million miles per hour as Rue gave her another look that looked like ‘I’m not sure I believe you’ But she shrugged it off.
In the end Rue gave Elizabeth a spare blanket and told her if she felt worse that it may be a temperature. Elizabeth nodded and thanked the women.
“Shit guys! Look who’s ringinggg!” Carter all of a sudden shoved his communicator In Elizabeth and Rues faces. The name read:
‘Colonel Quaritch’
“Okay act cool you lot, you know? PROFESSIONAL?” Jacob deadpanned at the trio who grinned nervously.
“We’ve got this, right guys?” Elizabeth nervously looked over to the other two who looked just as nervous.
“Okay we are screwed.” Elizabeth shrugged back to Jacob who already looked done with life.
Elizabeth had heard of the man before of course, he was well known in rankings and Elizabeth heard his name passed around a few times back on Earth.
What she and the rest were not expecting was to see the guy on the communicator being blue. He was what they had been told where ‘avatars’
Like Jake was.
The Avatars face appeared on the screen looking back at the team of five who stared straight back at him with a sense of anticipation and nervousness.
“Who here is the leader?” He spoke, he sounded southern, mature, everything Elizabeth expected.
Shit. They were supposed to pick a leader as soon as they got to the dorm room a week ago but never spoke about it again. Eyes wondered to one another aimlessly hoping someone would speak up already.
This was getting awkward quick.
“Is there a connection problem or somethin’? Speak up someone!”
Elizabeth couldn’t stand the silence anymore. If anyone was the leader it was him.
“That would be Jacob, Sir.” Elizabeth spoke up, looking directly at the Camera into Quaritch’s eyes. The man stared at her own for a moment longer than needed, sending shivers down her spine. This guy for some reason gave her serious bad vibes.
Jacob looked at Elizabeth for a moment but when he realised that Carter and Rue gave a grin of agreement he exhaled, looking back at the man on the screen with a confident look, Elizabeth grinned to herself.
“I’m impressed. Your team are the first in a while to discover any new leads as to where the natives have scampered off too.” He spoke with with a harsh tone, as if the only thing he was used to was being in charge and ordering people around.
“Thank you sir, my team are the best of the batch.” Jacob nodded back.
Quaritch leaned back into his chair, despite his laid back positioning, it still gave off a feeling of strength even when relaxed.
“That so?” He spoke, more to himself than to the team.
“You bet Sir. Carter Mills here found the arrow, Rue Alaya offers to defend the camp every night, even shooting a trespassing creature late one night-” Jacob liked to talk about his team, he was proud of them. Rue and Carter looked over to the man, including Elizabeth with a fondness in their eyes towards their new leader.
“Sounds as though there’s not much point you being there then does it soldier?” Quaritch’s voice suddenly pierced through the communicator. Jacob looked back at the screen, the way he looked conveyed to anyone that he was unsure if that was a joke or not.
“Sir?”
“Oh, I mean that whole heartedly soldier. what do you contribute to this new ‘amazing’ team?” Quaritch sounded as though he was interrogating Jacob now, Elizabeth’s eyes frowned.
Elizabeth didn’t know what overtook her in that moment but she moved into the camera further.
“He’s our map, our leader. Without him we would not of found that track, he led us to it through his skills in locating. Sir.” Elizabeth added in the formality so not to have any reason for punishment. Sure her voice had annoyance laced in it, but her words were nothing more than a simple explanation.
The man’s eyes fell back on her again, this time, more calculating.
“I didn’t quite get your name solider.” he hummed, waiting for a response that Elizabeth knew she would have to respond with so not to look suspicious. Lots of people had Sully for a last name, lots of people-
“Elizabeth Sully, sir.” Her voice was void of any hidden tones now. She knew she over spoke when she shouldn’t have, it was too late now to backtrack so she stayed quiet.
When Quaritch heard the name his eyes did something strange that Elizabeth couldn’t understand, his eye lids lowered but his attention seemed to grow by the second.
“Is that so?” Whatever he was trying to get at he didn’t show it enough for the others to notice but Elizabeth noticed something weird about his face, it seemed too relaxed now. Shit.
“Well then, I have been proven wrong obviously. It seems you’re an assist to your team after all , good for you.” He grinned dangerously.
“Thank you, sir.” Jacob responded
“You will all get a report in the next twenty four or less hours on what is happening next, keep an eye out.”
“I’ll see you all soon, alive and safe back at HQ I hope.” He concluded,
“Yes sir!” Came the reply of everyone before the connection was cut.
A small silence permitted after the video call ended. Everyone seemed to just look at each other wordlessly.
“What the fuck was that.” Carter finally spoke up loudly causing a tsunami of laughter mixed in with a tad of nervousness to fill the silence.
“Damn El you’re like, fucking crazy putting him in his place.” Rue laughed propping up her head on her hand.
“What the fuck even just happened.” Elizabeth asked, still surprised from the whole situation. That Quaritch had really gotten to Elizabeth for some reason and she didn’t understand why. Well maybe it was simply because he was being rude towards one of her friends, because that definitely didn’t help his case.
“Ok stop with the F word people! Everyone just calm the Fuc- hell down!” Jacob shouted over to the still half shell shocked trio.
“Sorry, the word just seemed fitting.” Elizabeth shrugged apologetically.
“Okay, that may be true..but do you people really want to make me your leader? I mean, I would only want to be that if you all trusted me to do so.” The man asked more seriously.
Carter put a hand on Jacobs shoulder and grinned.
“Couldn’t imagine someone better.”
“Neither could I.” Rue added in.
“See? I made a good last minute decision.” Elizabeth smiled.
“Right! Now that’s outa the way I want food!” Carter slapped his knees and stood up to go towards the campfire he had set up earlier.
“Count me in.” Rue jumped in.
“Well, you know what they say about food, it’s a way to a women’s heart-“
“Shut it and cook pretty please.”
Both wondered off leaving just Jacob and Elizabeth who where still sat next to where the video call happened just a few moments ago.
“Thanks kid.”
Elizabeth looked at Jacob who looked genuinely grateful back at her, that reaction was one she hadn’t had in a long time.
“We were all thinkin’ it. I just finalised the role for you.” She smiled back.
A calm silence filled the area, noises from far away echoed throughout the forest. A slight wind brushed against the leaves making a noise that sounded like calm waves crashing into the sand.
“You know, when I said we would look out for you, I mean it. I know you’re not as old as you say you are, El.”
Elizabeth’s head span to face Jacob. She looked at him up and down to see if what he was saying was some sort of joke but no grin or laugh came.
This wasn’t happening…if they knew-!
Wait.
What would happen if they all actually did know? These people she had come to be friends with seemed to be good and genuine people. Would they out her to the RDA for real? She found herself doubting that.
“I-“ she started, attempting desperately to make up an excuse, but found that no other words wanted to come out.
“Knew it.” He smiled sadly, as if her lack of words were enough for him to be proven right.
“Jacob. I- I am 19, I just look-“ redeeming herself now was weak but she didn’t know what else to do.
“Kiddo. You sure act older, but I grew up taking care of my cousins who were teenagers themselves. I can tell.”
“Are you trying to expose me for the wrong reasons?” She was referring to the RDA getting involved of course, but the question did seem harsh. Elizabeth cringed when she asked it, but she needed to know.
“Of course not. Who do you take me for? A villain?” He snorted.
The the tension suddenly disappeared as he laughed. Elizabeth didn’t know why but she found herself laughing too, maybe it was from anxiety or maybe it was from the relief of Jacob being on her side.
“So how old are we talking? Seventeen? Eighteen? Technically the RDA can’t really recruit anyone under the age of nineteen when it comes to space travel. So I imagine that’s why you said nineteen.” He thought aloud.
Elizabeth wanted to say yes to eighteen, it was the safe option that may give her some leeway if the RDA did find out out, but she found herself not wanting to lie anymore to Jacob, or to the group.
“More like Sixteen.” She muttered, holding her hands in her lap tightly.
“Sixteen?!?” Two voices from behind both Jacob and and Elizabeth exasperated loudly.
“Carter?! Rue?!”
Elizabeth turned around to see the pair hiding behind a bush but now with their heads peering up.
“What happened to making food?!” Elizabeth shouted back at the two spies.
“I needed to get the stuff that makes the food in my bag that’s over here so we both came back- Rewind! we knew you were young but damn girl!”
“You guys better not say anything!” She half warned, half pleaded.
“Hmm, what will you give us to not out you?” Thought Rue out loud.
“Your dignity back!”
“Pfft. chill kid! your secret is safe with us, no worry. We are just surprised is all!”
“Yeah don’t worry El.” Carter agreed.
“I can’t expose the girl that gave me an upgrade to my job.” Jacob huffed out jokingly.
A weight lifted off Elizabeth that night that she didn’t know she was carrying.
“Okay. Thank you guys, really..” she smiled for the first time shyly because now they knew such a secret about her. She hoped that it wouldn’t effect anything.
“Sorry for not telling you sooner but I just needed to make sure I could trust you.” It was half true, she would have told them at some point, but a part of her was glad that they already knew.
“No sweat kid, you have your reasonings as to why you joined so young, non of our business.” Jacob responded calmly.
Guilt was what Elizabeth was all of a sudden feeling. If only they really did know why. That she was planning to possibly join the enemy’s leader. They would hate her then, She knew they would.
“I couldn’t ask for a better team.” she spoke, the guilt made her feel sick. would they really hate her if they knew?
“Me neither.” Rue grinned.
“Soppy people.” Carter concluded.
“Shut up.” Rue and Elizabeth warned the man in perfect accuracy.
—————
She was starving, the type of hunger that meant even trying to move felt excruciating and uncomfortable.
Her stomach rumbled for the tenth time that day, it didn’t help that at the RDA facility they were doing a physical lesson meaning she wore herself out even more.
She thought back to her mums cooking, to the smell of vanilla and warmth of the blankets on the sofa.
She thought of Tommy and Jake who would join them every weekend when Jake wasn’t sent away to another country to fight. The three of them would cram on the small sofa, Elizabeth would sometimes sprawl herself on both her uncles legs so she could stretch which would cause them to sometimes complain but she simply ignored them.
She felt so safe back then, now on the streets she felt so on edge.
She closed her eyes despite her hunger, lying on a bench away from prying eyes and held herself tightly as she tried to drift off.
————————
-
Elizabeth yawned tiredly as she rolled herself over from her front onto her back. It was awkward to do in a sleeping bag and in a tent so small but she did.
Elizabeth looked up at her tent which allowed some of the light from the morning inside due to its light green appearance. It was very peaceful, all she could hear was the muttering of her team far away behind the tents. They sounded all awake.
Groggily, Elizabeth reached out of the warmth of her bedding to grab her device. It read out 7:39 am. An actual lie in? She was surprised.
Slowly the teen sat herself up, still staring up above whilst attempting to wake herself up by sitting up, it didn’t work but she knew she still had to get up, annoyingly.
Elizabeth grabbed her toothbrush and used her one hand to brush her teeth whilst the other one unzipped the tent.
The noise from her group was louder now with the tent open, loud voices filtered through the usual calm that the forest permitted. Elizabeth decided to get ready quicker to see what all the commotion was about.
Hair tied and sprayed down, washed and dressed, Elizabeth walked over to the camp.
“We can’t let them do this-“
“Do you not think I know that Carter? We need to be clever about this-“
“What is there to be clever about! She is going to be used wrongly. She’s just a kid, she don’t deserve what they may do-“
Elizabeth listened from the side as the cryptic conversation took place. It was about her she knew this, but what about exactly she didn’t. Anxiety grew as she thought they might of known something that they shouldn’t have.
They seemed to notice her finally, so she gave a small anxious wave to her friends.
“Elizabeth.” Rue ran up to the girl and looked into her eyes.
“You’re Jake Sully’s niece?” She questioned, her eyes wouldn’t waver from Elizabeth’s own.
The teenager felt her breath stop as all three stood and watched her with an emotion she couldn’t make out. Anger? Worry? What was it?
“Why would you think that?” She managed to force out. this was it. She had no idea what was going to happen next but the team definitely hated her now. She didn’t know what to do. Should she run? Where was there to go? She didn’t have anywhere to go!
“Answer the question kid, no more lies.” Jacob stood up this time.
If they knew she was Jakes Niece, then they obviously already found out the truth. All she could do was nod.
Carter placed his hands on his head.
“Fuck.”
“Kid are you- some typa’ spy?”
Elizabeth widened her eyes, did they really think that? Well, she wouldn’t blame them, she was family with the man they were trying to find. But she came to Pandora with these people, how could she be a spy?
“No I swear! I came here just like you. You heard Admore a week ago, Jake went rogue whilst on Pandora. How would I of known that being on Earth at the time? Plus that was fifteen years ago, if I was a spy, how could I of gotten ahold of Jake if so much had changed?!” Elizabeth blurted out, shaking her head and moving her hands as she talked. She wasn’t a spy, she needed them to know that!
“Figured as much.” Rue nodded slowly, closing her eyes for a moment and standing back again.
“Ok. Kid listen carefully. The RDA have figured out who you are, who you really are.” Jacob began.
“Holy shit.” Elizabeth felt herself go nauseous quickly. Her heart pounded painfully quickly.
“Quaritch must of sussed you out.” Rue said, Elizabeth was already thinking the exact same thing. His calculating eyes on the video call last night, they were calculating her.
“We need to think of a plan, and fast.” Carter frowned, walking over to the other two.
“What do you think is gunna happen now they know?” She half wished she didn’t ask, she already knew what would happen. Be used as bait.
“We won’t let that happen alright?” Carter stared into her eyes, she met his own and shook her head desperately.
“You don’t understand! If they know you helped me, you will be punished just as badly!”
The man ignored her and instead turned to his team.
Just as he was about to start to speak, an AT-99 scorpion from above rang through the trees. Everyone looked up in surprise at the speed that it came at.
“How the hell-“
“They must of already been on their way.” Rue shook her head.
“What are we gunna do?” Carter shouted over the flying craft loudly, his eyes not leaving the flying machine in the sky once.
Five or six men wearing Exopacks were lifted down from above with ropes touching the floor. They jumped down and made their way swiftly towards the group.
“We are here for the retrieval of Elizabeth Sully.” The biggest man spoke, his voice was low and croaked.
Elizabeth stared at the group of men and they stared straight back. They knew exactly what she looked like already. She felt her throat going dry.
“By whose orders?” Jacob challenged, taking a step towards them. Elizabeth could not let her friends take the fall for her, Jacob needed to stop before he would be convicted too.
“Colonel Quaritch. And who the hell are you?” The man spoke back, his voiced snarled.
“Did Elizabeth cause a crime? I didn’t think you could be convicted for something you haven’t done.” Jacob ignored the man’s question and instead replaced it with his own. The guy didn’t seem pleased with that.
“Would ya stop making this harder than it needs to be? Move outa my way.” He warned.
When neither three seemed to budge for the man he began to get physically aggravated. His eyebrows frowned dangerously and his fists clenched.
“I SAID MOVE-“
Swizzzzzzzz
A sound flew past Elizabeth’s ear which sounded like the start of a firework when zooming into the sky.
Something hit the marines chest in the exact place where his heart would be. He slowly looked down at where blood began to stain his military wear before completely collapsing to the floor.
All guns raised from both sides. Even Elizabeth reached for her gun from the shock of what just happened.
Everyone gazed nervously in different directions to try and find what just killed the man. The teenager averted her eyes to the now downed man to have a better look at the weapon. An arrow. Her eyes widened.
It was from Na’vi. They were here.
