Chapter 1: Senrigan
Chapter Text
The sky was the same color today as it was yesterday. Blue and tranquil, an endless sea of blue that could go on forever. This is the same blue sky a young boy sees everyday. Sitting on a rooftop isolated from the rest of society was a young boy. His short, yet spiky blond hair and clear blue eyes stood out as he looked up at the endless blue sky.
This child’s name is Naruto Uzumaki.
He lives in Konohagakure no Sato, a hidden village in Fire Country where it's hidden amongst the leaves. In this quiet, peaceful village where most children were playing, he was not. Naruto had come to realize something when he was five years old.
Everyone in the village, except the Hokage and the owner of Ichiraku and his daughter, hated him.
He doesn’t understand why. What could he have done that would make them hate him for no good reason? One day he asked Jiji why they hated him so much, but instead of answering his question the old man simply gave him a sad smile. Seeing that only made him have more questions, but there are no answers.
Everytime he walked around the village the adults would whisper and glare at him with hate. Those looks are forever burned into his mind. The last time he walked around the village and heard the whispering, his ears caught “Demon brat.” Why would they call him that? Once again he asked Hokage-jiji, but again…the elder gave him that same sad smile.
He doesn’t understand why the old man won’t answer his questions. It hurts when the adults won’t let him play with their kids, kick him out of their stores, or just ignore him like he didn’t exist.
Sometimes he would cry himself to sleep in his apartment building alone. He used to live in an orphanage but was kicked out by the head matron and told never to come back. Thankfully he didn’t have to live outside because Hokage-jiji got this apartment for him to live in. After settling in his new house for a few days, he suddenly asked about his parents. This time instead of a smile, he got a different answer…
“There’s no use asking about that. It won’t bring the dead back.”
… it was a dismissive answer.
In his heart, he wants to believe in the old man but as the days go by and his answers remain unanswered, the small doubt in his heart continues to fester and grow. All he wants is to know more about himself and the only one who knows about him is Hokage-jiji, but he just won’t tell him! It's not fair!
Taking a deep breath, he calmed his mind. It wasn’t worth getting upset because he’s right now his anticipation was outweighing his bitter feelings at the moment. This bubbly feeling was making him fidget in place as he was waiting anxiously and trying to contain his excitement.
“You waited patiently for us to arrive. Good.”
Naruto swiftly turned his head in the direction of the voice with a happy smile. Standing before him are two tall males exuding a dignified air between them. Both males possess pale white skin, and blank white lavender pupil-less eyes. The tallest had long white hair, while the other had short blue hair. They were also wearing white noble's finery, embroidered with magatama designs, shaved eyebrows that were circular maro patterns.
The tiny blonde jumped off the roof and into the waiting arms of the taller male with long white hair, “Ryō-nii!” He wrapped his little arms around the older male’s neck as tight as he could. A wave of happiness was felt throughout his whole body. Naruto hates it when they both have to leave for their “secret mission” but he promised not to make a fuss and wait for them to return.
“We have returned, Naruto. Have you been well?” Ōtsutsuki Ryōkan asked the happy child in his arms.
Naruto removed his face from his neck and responded, “Yeah! I waited for you and Gesu-nii like you said!” He was talking about the silent male standing next to Ryōkan—Ōtsutsuki Gesshū.
“You did well to wait for us. As promised we will continue your training.” Ryōkan said.
Hearing this only made Naruto even more happy. He wanted to keep training with his older brothers, but they had to put it on hold because his brothers had to deal with something. Naruto didn’t really know, nor care about what it was because they were here with him now. Sometimes he really wants to go with them but Ryō-nii said it was too dangerous for him and needed to stay here and wait for their return.
Of course Naruto listened because why wouldn't he? His big brothers were the strongest and no one can beat them! Not even Jiji!
“What are we training with today?” Naruto asked, being carried in Ryōkan’s arms. Instead of walking through the village like they normally would, the two older males decided to fly home.
“Today we will train more with your unique eyes. You must master them early on so as to not have any problems when using them later.” Ryōkan replied.
Gesshū looked at the blonde boy, “What did you do in the village today?” He asked.
“I stayed away from people just like you told me to!” Naruto answered, smiling. His brothers didn’t want him around the villagers when they weren’t here to watch him. He doesn’t remember what happened since he was really tired and almost fell asleep walking to Ichiraku with his brothers. Ryō-nii told him afterwards that the villagers were saying even worse insults at him and it got them both so mad that they made half of the villagers pass out.
Naruto thought it was cool and asked them to teach him how to do that. He pouted when all they did was laugh. Naruto doesn't go out into the street all that much anyway since his brothers would get anything he needed for him. And if they have to leave the village every once in a while, they tell him to stay out of sight and away from the villagers. It was one of the rules he had to follow.
And he did so without complaint.
They finally arrived home, which was no longer that apartment complex but an actual house. It was a surprise gift from his brothers who said his previous living place was “filthy” and “unpleasant.” Naruto doesn’t know where they got the house from but he wasn’t complaining. For the first time it felt like he really had a family of his own. He wasn’t alone anymore.
Naruto was standing out in the backyard and facing Ryōkan. Gesshū was sitting on the porch and watching them. A sudden feeling of nervousness overtook Naruto as he wasn’t really sure about meeting his brother’s expectations. But after seeing the calm and relaxed gaze of his brother made him feel a lot better. There wasn’t a need for him to be nervous. He’s going to do his best.
“Show me.” Ryōkan gently urges Naruto to show him his secret that he hasn’t even told the Hokage.
Naruto calms himself by taking a deep breath before his blue eyes changed. The Iris were clear blue with the pupil being a black crescent moon shape, and finally sclera looked like a galaxy. These eyes were Naruto’s secret and swore that he would never tell anyone unless he really trusted them.
This is a very unique eye technique that hasn’t been seen in such a long time. No other human has ever been recorded to have such eyes until now.
A dōjutsu that’s more unique and possibly more valuable—the Senrigan. The last time this eye technique was during Ōtsutsuki Shibai’s era. When the two Ōtsutsuki brothers saw Naruto with those eyes, they were astounded. How was it possible for these eyes to be seen again after such a long time? And more importantly, how was it possible for this child to possess them? They soon stopped wondering how this human child could have the eyes of their God.
From that point on they decided to stay on this planet and raise the child. Their goal was to make him more powerful than any other child of his generation.
“You’ve also been practicing your taijutsu, yes?” Gesshū asked, smiling.
Naruto nodded while still having the Senrigan active, “Mm! I’ve been practicing all by myself like you told me to. But…” he looked down shyly, “can we spar a little bit? I want to get better.”
Such an honest yet simple request. Honestly, how could the other foolish humans treat such an innocent child like this with such contempt and indifference?
The two brothers witnessed their cruelty first hand when they first arrived at the village. Three drunken old men nearly came close to physically harming the child, and would have done so had the two not interfered. Killing them was sufficient enough before they took the boy away. Because of this incident, the child had trusted them and felt safe in their presence. A strange sensation they weren’t used to considering who they are. Instead of feeling fear this child felt safe and protected, trusting them completely. Unlike other organic beings they came into contact with before destroying their world, this child would smile at them and feel happiness just being around them.
Celestial beings such as themselves existed for one purpose, yet the two brothers started to feel bored with it and decided to leave. Of course it wasn’t so easy to just leave and certainly not without putting up a fight. So before they left the clan and started traveling for fun, they started a rebellion with others who felt the same way as they did. The two were classified as “traitors” but they didn’t bother them in the slightest. After the fighting was over with only a fair amount of them surviving, the brothers left and began traveling to different worlds so as to throw off their pursuers.
It worked and they soon found themselves here with this boy as their adoptive little brother—Naruto Ōtsutsuki Uzumaki.
Ryōkan gently rubbed Naruto’s head, “We will spar immediately. Remember to keep with the schedule.” Naruto was given a training schedule that he followed without complaint. He would go through intense training for a few hours before taking a break to play and relax before getting back to training.
Naruto was a child who should be enjoying his childhood to the fullest, but he’s not like most children his age. In order to get stronger he has to train and he doesn't want to disappoint his brothers. He wants to make them proud and show them that he can be the strongest.
He can do it. With his brothers here with him, he can do anything.
大筒木
Sarutobi Hiruzen, known to others as the Sandaime Hokage aka—The Professor and God of Shinobi, was more than just troubled. In fact he felt a sense of foreboding he hadn’t felt since the Kyūbi attacked Konoha twelve years ago. No, this feeling was much different and it had him feeling on edge that even his ANBU could sense it. A voice in the back of his head was telling him it had something to do with Naruto.
The small blonde had been acting very differently as of late and it worried Hiruzen to no end. At first he thought the boy was still feeling down about his response to his question about his parents. He feels bad about not telling him the truth but it was for his own good. He’s sure that once Naruto is older and more mature he’ll understand his decision. But right now he’s worried about his change in behavior. The boy refuses to go out into the village anymore and when he personally invites him out to eat at Ichiraku, Naruto flat out refuses and closes the door in his face.
Sarutobi went so far as to watch him with his crystal ball but was unable to bring up his image. This made him worry even more but also made him suspicious about what the boy could be doing. He sent out his ANBU but all they reported was that he would go to an isolated place in the village and stare at the sky for hours and nothing else. Such troubling behavior he was hoping Naruto would at least go to the park and try to make friends, but he stayed away.
What could have happened the last time they spoke?
Before he could think more on the subject there was a knock on his door, “Come in.” He said.
The ANBU operative “Cat” walked in and stood before the Hokage, “I have something to report regarding Uzumaki Naruto.” She said with a steady tone, but there was an underline of caution and unease. Seeing made Sarutobi feel just as uneasy.
“What happened?” He needed to know if a villager got out of hand again or if Naruto was doing something odd.
Cat started her report, “A few hours ago, two unknown males dressed in white robes were seen walking with Uzumaki Naruto down the village streets.”
Hiruzen’s eyes narrowed, “What? Are the ANBU still following them?” He questioned.
“Yes. The three are currently on route to Ichiraku.” Cat confirmed.
Hiruzen raised a curious brow, ‘So they aren’t trying to kidnap Naruto but taking him out to eat? Who are these men?’ No, the more important question is how in the world did they get within the village and he just now heard about them?
“Describe these two unidentified males.” He ordered.
Cat nodded, “Tall, pale skinned with eyes similar to those of the Hyūga clan. Even wearing traditional robes.” At first the ANBU believed they were members of the Hyūga clan but that wouldn’t make any sense since they would have no reason to associate with the child. So the obvious conclusion is that these two are not from the village and have purposely come into contact with Uzumaki Naruto.
From what they observed so far it didn’t seem like they were holding the child hostage, just walking around with him and talking. But alone was still suspicious since they don’t know anything about the origins of the two males.
Hiruzen was mostly thinking the same thing, but in the end made a decision, “Observe them until they leave. Then bring them here.” He would evaluate the two men himself and find out why they were with Naruto. The possibility of them being spies from another village was more than likely. Although he wanted to know more about why their physical appearance resembled that of the Hyuga clan, it wasn’t important right now.
Uncovering their intentions with Naruto took far more significance right now.
Ryōkan despised these humans.
The walk to Ichiraku was pleasant enough. He was conversing with his younger brother about their travels and what they discovered. It was a pleasant stroll…
…until the whispering started.
This was nothing new to the brothers. In the last world they came from there were other humans there who would bow and call them “gods.” That’s why he paid the whispering no mind as he focused on their destination while talking with Naruto.
He was going to ignore them.
Until he heard someone curse at his younger brother.
“Why are those two strangers with that “demon brat.”
Hearing someone call his little brother such a thing made every nerve in his body boil.
Who dares?!
“I can’t believe both of them are holding that monster’s hand.”
“It even has the nerve to smile.”
“Makes me sick.”
“How dare it act so happy after killing our families!”
“Damn monster!”
“The Hokage should have killed that murderer right after it was born!”
Ryōkan stopped walking, prompting his brother’s to do the same. Naruto was confused and wondered why his older brother stopped all of a sudden. He was about to ask what was wrong but the words died in his throat once he saw his brother’s expression. His eyes were shadowed so he couldn't really see, but the sudden feeling of hostility and anger was felt.
Gesshū reacted by picking up the small blonde with his ever present smile, “Naruto, why don’t we go to Ichiraku’s first and save Nii-san a seat?” He suggested. Unlike Naruto who was still too young to sense his brother’s swelling power coming forth, Gesshū could sense it all too well. It had been a long time since his older brother got this angry. But he still remembers what happened to the poor fools who became the center of his anger that day.
Truly poor fools.
Naruto was confused by the suggestion but nodded his head without saying a word. Satisfied with his younger brother complying without asking what was wrong, he started walking to Ichiraku but not before saying something to Ryōkan.
“Try not to cause too much of a mess.”
Gesshū couldn't care less if his older brother kills the humans that were spewing nonsense, in fact he found the whole thing amusing. Well, perhaps his brother won’t kill them, just make sure they will never open their mouths ever again.
Ryōkan said nothing as the two walked away and left him to deal with these insects. Turning his head in the direction of the whispering villagers, the Byakugan came forth, shocking the villagers. Was this person a member of the Hyūga clan? And if so then why be around that demon child? However none of them voiced their thoughts because of the chilling killing intent sent their way, making them unable to move. What made it more terrifying was the blank, expressionless face the unknown Hyūga was giving them. With his Byakugan staring right into their very souls the villagers felt the same rush of fear and dread when the Kyūbi attacked the village.
“Insolent, inferior creatures.” Ryōkan spoke, his tone inhuman and making the villagers shudder even more in fear. He walked in the direction of those that were whispering those vile words at an innocent child. How dare these lower beings say such hateful words purposefully in front of a child. Such a blatant, disrespectful act will not go unpunished. He will see to it.
“ Repeat your words…” Ryōkan’s tone became even lower if that was possible. The villagers edged back even further the closer he got. It was as if death was literally staring them in the face, they were in the presence of a God, …for you will never utter them again.”
Gesshū greeted Teuchi and his daughter Ayame before sitting down in the stool. He sat Naruto down on his right before explaining they’ll order something when Ryōkan arrives. While the two waited for their brother to arrive he decided to have a nice conversation with Teuchi. The look on the man’s face when he explained that he’s Naruto’s older brother amused him greatly. Out of all the humans here in this village this man and his daughter were an exception. These two were the only humans that showed the little blonde any kindness before they arrived here. Well, there was also the Hokage, but he knows for a fact that the old man had another agenda in mind.
To them, it seems like the old man is trying to emotionally manipulate Naruto by not telling him anything about his birth. He remembers when their little brother told them how he asked the Hokage about his birth parents, but the old man didn’t give him a straight answer. Instead he said something cruel about how it won’t bring the dead back. What right did that old fool have to keep their little brother in the dark? And then there’s the villagers being cruel towards a child without letting him know why. Another reason not to trust the old fool.
If the old man won’t tell his little brother the truth then they’ll just have to uncover the truth.
“Oh, welcome back.” Gesshū greeted Ryōkan as he finally arrived, “So, how was it?”
Ryōkan’s appearance hadn’t changed. There were no traces of blood on his clothing, but he looked satisfied. His blank expression didn’t reveal anything to the average person, and yet his siblings can tell he’s no longer angry.
“Those insects received the proper punishment.” He said.
“That’s good. They shouldn’t say things like that in front of our little brother.” Gesshū said, rubbing Naruto’s head. Such a cute and adorable little brother they have, yet those lower beings were saying such mean things about him. At first he was curious to know why these lower beings hated their little brother so much, but now he doesn’t. Hearing their voices annoyed him to no end, too. If his brother didn’t decide to deal with them first then it's likely he would have killed them.
Oh, well.
More importantly…
“This ramen tastes amazing! Right, brother?” He asked Ryōkan.
Ryōkan didn’t respond as he was preoccupied with savoring his food. He had to agree with his brother about the flavor of this ramen being of high quality when it comes to taste. Interesting. Just what sort of special skills does this human possess that makes this ramen the way it is?
“Human, tell me what sort of skills do you use to make this ramen taste this way?” He asked.
Teuchi blinked a couple of times then grinned, “I can’t tell you since it's a special family recipe, but I’ll tell you this…the most important ingredient to make amazing ramen is this!” He clenched his fist looking serious, “Ramen is the ultimate food of the gods!”
Ryōkan’s eyes widened in astonishment at the man’s declaration. The ultimate food of the gods, and they were eating such a sacred meal prepared and given to them by this human?! It would appear this world is full of interesting humans.
“I see…you are indeed a special human.” Ryōkan said to the man.
Ayame sighed, shaking her head. She feels bad for the man for believing her father’s ludacris explanation about why their ramen tastes so good, but at least these two were enjoying the meal. Gesshū and Naruto paid them no mind and kept eating. They were having a peaceful family moment where it was just them in their own world. A quiet tranquility no one would dare to interrupt. But the calm didn’t last long.
Gesshū just finished eating when he sensed a presence outside Ichiraku. Looks like the hidden shadows decided to stop hiding and greet them.
“What do you want?” He questioned with his back still facing them.
Naruto recognized who the three shadows were. The ANBU he sometimes sees following him around but not all the time. His guard was up now but he was also worried about his brothers. If the ANBU are here that means the Old Man Hokage knows about his brothers and sent them here.
“You two are to come with us. Hokage-sama insisted you both come peacefully.” One of the ANBU wearing a Cat mask spoke.
Oh, so their leader wants to see them now? He must have finally realized they were here in the village. Took him long enough. Guess getting old really does dull one’s senses.
Gesshū knows what their leader wants to talk with them about, but doesn’t really care. They could just refuse to leave and play with these shadows, and they would win very easily. Compared to them these three weren’t even worth going all out.
“You hear that, brother?” Gesshū said to his brother, sounding amused.
Ryōkan had no interest in seeing their pathetic leader and was about to refuse. But seeing the worried expression on their little brother’s face changed his mind. Actually, it might be beneficial to agree with their request to meet their weak leader since he has things to discuss.
“Thank you for the meal, it was satisfying.” It would be rude to not properly thank the man after he fed them such a delicious meal.
“Oh, you’re welcome. Come back again!” Teuchi smiled, trying to at least ease the sudden tension that was created and it worked a little.
“Thank you, I believe we will.” Ryōkan replied, lifting Naruto in his arms as he stood from his stool.
ANBU Cat saw this and spoke again, “Uzumaki Naruto is to stay here.”
Hearing this made Ryōkan turn his piercing cold eyes in her direction, “I will not leave my younger brother here.”
“Our orders—” She was cut off when Ryōkan activated his Byakugan. All three jumped back and brandished their swords. The already bad tension became much more prominent, but it didn’t seem to bother the brothers or Naruto. He was in no mood to deal with these weak, incompetent individuals who did nothing when his younger brother was being insulted by those lesser beings he dealt with earlier. His senses are far sharper than these humans so he knows for a fact these individuals had been watching them and didn’t try to silence those who spoke ill of his sibling. Useless.
If the pressure he was pushing down on them ended up stopping their hearts then so be it.
“I do believe this is not up for discussion. My little brother will be coming with us to see your leader. That’s all.” Ryōkan said it as the final word on the matter and left it at that. He then proceeded to walk in the direction of the Hokage tower with an amused Gesshū following behind.
Naruto was in awe at what his older brother just did, “That was amazing, Ryō-nii! How did you do that?” He asked.
The older Ōtsutsuki brother was amused by Naruto’s innocent, childlike curiosity, “I’ll teach you how to intimidate others when you’re much older.”
Naruto beamed, excited for when that time comes.
Hiruzen was expecting the mysterious visitors to come see him, but what he wasn’t expecting was Naruto being with them, fast asleep in the arms of one of the visitors. Just how comfortable has Naruto gotten with the strange duo?
The one holding the sleeping blonde looked at him with disinterest but spoke, “What a weak leader. Perfect for this pathetic village.”
Hiruzen didn’t appreciate his words if the frown on his face was any indication of just how offended he was on the village’s behalf.
“You wish to speak with us? Very well.” Ryōkan’s opposing aura started leaking, making Hiruzen tense and be on guard, “Speak.”

Chapter Text
There was a time Hiruzen felt true fear.
It was back when he was still a young man and Tobirama-sensei was still alive; he had many brushes with death. The chilling fear he felt when faced with an enemy stronger than him. Or the fear he felt from his former student after seeing the horrible atrocities he committed right under his nose. Those two incidents were nothing in comparison to these two men. His instincts may have dulled somewhat over time but they were working well enough to tell him these two men are dangerous! Their mere presence stressed they can’t possibly be human.
Now that he can get a better look at the duo in person he can indeed see they resemble the Hyūga clan very closely. In terms of looks or personality, but by their eyes. Not like he can tell a difference mind you, but something in the back of his mind was telling him of the differences clear as day.
“Whoa, they do look similar.”
Hiruzen snapped his head in the direction of the one with short hair. The man was staring up at the portraits of the previous Hokage’s with interest but that’s not what had Hiruzen on edge.
‘When did he move?’ Hiruzen didn’t sense anything until he spoke. What speed! He may be faster than Minato when he was still alive.
“Don’t you think so, nii-san?”
“Yes, the resemblance is hard to miss unless you're a fool.”
“Right?”
It took him a while to understand what they were talking about, but then realized the conversation was about how similar. Naruto resembles Minato. It’s no wonder the two made the connection so fast, Naruto is a carbon copy of Minato in terms of looks. As for his personality, well, he gets that from his mother.
“Sarutobi Hiruzen. I am aware of what you want to discuss so I’ll give you my answer. I refuse.” Ryōkan said, having already given his answer to an unanswered question.
Hiruzen was taken aback at first then became serious, “You refuse?”
“You heard my words clearly. Do not feign being senile.” Ryōkan says as a matter of factly.
Gesshū laughed, “This village would be in trouble if their leader started losing his marbles.” It would be interesting to see how they’d be able to defend themselves against their enemies without a competent leader.
“But such a thing is common among the elderly, especially the weak minded ones.” Ryōkan says, throwing those words at Hiruzen.
And the elder Hokage could tell they were both underestimating him, no—they didn’t see him as a threat. In their eyes he was nothing more than a weak, feeble old man and current leader of a hidden village. That was all. Hiruzen should feel disrespected by their dismissive behavior but right now he was deciding what move to make when they decided to attack him. What made the situation worse was the fact that Naruto ended up coming with them and being held in the older brother’s arms. He was holding the boy with such protection and care, a stark difference from how the child was treated back in the orphanage. Hiruzen was rightfully furious when the woman kicked him out on a cold day, leaving him outside to freeze to death. There wasn’t a shred of kindness given to Naruto from the villagers, but these two made up for that.
And while he appreciates them taking care of Naruto without having any ulterior motives, he still can’t trust them.
“I want to thank you for taking care of Naruto up until now, the issue is that we do not know where you come from or what you plan to do with him. That is why it would be in your best interest to—
“—I already refused your ludicrous suggestion.” Ryōkan interrupted, sounding unimpressed. Does this old fool really believe he was going to listen to his nonsense and leave their younger brother in the care of these vermin? How did this lower creature even become Hokage? Naruto’s care was best left in their hands and this monkey was trying to take him away from them. Which he wasn’t going to let happen.
Hiruzen had to keep himself from stiffening in place when he felt malicious bloodlust directed at him. The other brother laughed but it wasn’t merrily or good natured.
”You shouldn’t make jokes that aren’t funny, old man.” Gesshū’s eyes held malice that promised pain and suffering, “Trying to take away our kin is something you don’t want to do. And if you insist on trying, then…” He trailed off, eyes looking out the window and down towards the village. Hiruzen tensed at the veiled threat. In other words, if he insists on the issue of Naruto no longer being in their care then consider the lives of the villagers forfeit. He would call the threat to be underhanded but it would make the most sense to threaten the lives of powerless villagers than him outright. Even with the assistance of the clan heads he knows they would all fall to the might of these two. There was no way out of this nor any way to negotiate. Hiruzen was put in a tight spot and they knew it.
The confidence on their faces was more than enough proof he stood no chance against them. He’s powerless.
Sighing, he leaned back against his chair feeling defeated, “…What are your demands?” He’s lost without having the chance to fight.
“You catch on pretty quick, old man. I like that in humans.” Gesshū smiled, his hostility having vanished in an instant, “Let’s see…for starters, both the Uzumaki clan and Ōtsutsuki will be settling in this village, so make sure you tell that to the other clan heads. Naruto will be the one true heir since he has both bloodlines.”
Hiruzen’s eyes widened at this reveal. He knows of Naruto’s Uzumaki heritage but nothing about being an Ōtsutsuki. And how would these two even know about that to begin with?
“Also, anything belonging to the Uzumaki or Ōtsutsuki clan within this village belongs to Naruto. That includes scrolls, weapons, etc.” He was listing things off, “If you can’t find anything inside this village then check outside.”
“Very well. Anything else?”
“Don’t interfere when we bring in members of both clans to this village or whoever we feel like bringing. Oh, and don't send any of those pesky ANBU to try and sneak a peek or try anything against our clan.” Gesshū was enjoying himself and Hiruzen knew it. But again there was nothing he could do to deny their demands and refusing would have consequences to pay.
“And lastly, if at any point Naruto says he wants to leave…don’t try to stop him.” Gesshū said with a sharp smile.
This time Hiruzen objected.
“I can’t allow that to happen!” He stood up, “Naruto is not allowed to leave this village!” Gesshū got in his face before he could blink.
“Old man, you don’t seem to understand that wasn’t a request.” The malicious gaze returned as Gesshū got in his face, “Don’t forget that if we felt like it we could wipe out your entire village with just a finger. The needs of your village mean absolutely nothing, you had plenty of opportunities to do right by our little brother but chose not to.” He activated his Byakugan, “Make a choice here and now, accept the final term, or...sacrifice the lives of the villagers.”
Neither choice sounded acceptable. To lose Naruto would be losing the memory of the two people who are no longer here. He was considered their legacy and if he were to just let the child leave and never return then it would be lost to him forever. But he also couldn’t fault the words from this man’s mouth. Hiruzen has watched over Naruto since he was thrown out of the orphanage and lived in the apartment he gave him. Over and over he watched as he tried to make friends, only for his efforts to not bear fruit. The villagers shunned and spewed hateful words in his presence to express their anger and loss. “My hands were tied” is a convenient excuse. As the Hokage of this village he forced himself not to give Naruto any special treatment, lest it be used against him. Or his fellow shinobi would question him about what made the boy so special—aside from the obvious.
He really has no choice anymore.
He never had one to begin with.
The moment these two stepped through his door they were in control from the very beginning.
With great reluctance he sat back down in his chair, sighing tiredly. Anyone who knows him well enough can tell this is his way of giving up completely. No use arguing any further, “Very well…” he relents, somber. There’s no force capable of stopping them and even if he is willing to try it won’t do him any good. He has to think about the village first above anything else hence his decision to agree and not trying to aggravate them any longer.
“Again, wise choice old man. ‘Kay, we’re gonna head out! We’ve got some property land to cultivate and things to build. See ya!” Gesshū swiftly turns his back and walks out of the room followed by his older brother. Naruto never once woke up during that whole exchange. He continued to sleep peacefully but Hiruzen was sure his “brother” would tell him everything when he woke up.
He leans back against his chair and stares at Minato’s picture, “I’ve truly failed him, haven’t I?” He was half hoping the photo would respond but knows that won’t happen.

Naruto was sitting outside his new home on the porch in anticipation. Ryō-nii said he was going to bring someone special to see him today so he opted to stay and wait for him to return. A whole month has passed since things changed even more for him, but it was for the better. His brothers told him that from now on he can stay with them in a new home they were going to build. And that from now on he’s the heir to both the Uzumaki and Ōtsutsuki clan. Apparently that’s really important but he was more excited to know his family would soon be growing.
All of it feels so strange. To think his life would change so much in just the blink of an eye. He always dreamed about having a house, siblings, and a big family to come home to. It’s okay he doesn’t have any parents or even remembers them because he has his brothers, and soon to be family members. Both of his brothers explained to him that the Hokage gave the okay for all of this, which he didn’t believe at first. But he accepted the explanation in the end because he knew his brothers would never lie to him. To think the old man would actually let him have this but wouldn’t tell him anything about his parents, or why everyone in the village hates him.
He still doesn’t understand.
Naruto shakes his head while looking annoyed. Fine, if the old man won’t tell him then he’ll just have to find out for himself!
“Naruto.”
He perks up when he hears Ryō-nii’s voice. He’s back! Naruto thinks, hopping off the porch and around the house to see his older brother standing there with a boy. He had pale skin, shaggy white hair, pretty facial features, and six magatama designs tattooed on his collarbones to resemble a necklace. Naruto couldn’t see what his eyes looked like because they were closed, is he blind? His clothes are the same as his older brother’s so that makes him an Ōtsutsuki then.
“Ryō-nii, who is he?” He asks, curious.
Ryōkan placed a hand on the quiet boy’s shoulder, “This boy is Ōtsutsuki Toneri—the last member of the Ōtsutsuki Branch family.” He introduced.
Naruto's eyes widened, “What do you mean by the last member? Where’s his family?”
“They are no more. He’s the only one.” Ryōkan elaborated.
So he’s all alone just like him.
Naruto looks back at Toneri, who still hasn’t said anything. He can’t tell if he’s sad or not but anyone would feel lonely if all of their family members were gone. He doesn’t even know who his parents are but still feels their absence in his life. Toneri must miss his family a lot since he actually got to be with them.
“Is he going to live here with us from now on?” Naruto asks.
“Yes. Since you are from the main branch and Toneri is from the branch family, the two of you are cousins.” Ryōkan explains their connection, “Treat him as your family from this point on.”
Family.
He has someone who is really family.
His chest feels tight but in a good way. The two of them don’t have to feel lonely anymore because they have each other.
“I’m Naruto Ōtsutsuki Uzumki. Let’s be family from now on, Toneri!” Naruto says, holding out his hand with a smile.
For his part, Toneri couldn’t believe he was standing in front of this human child. He’s never interacted with human children before but his father could tell he wanted to. That’s why the two of them secretly descended to Earth where they would observe the Hyūga clan. Sure he was interested in their heir from the main branch but soon lost interest. It wasn’t that he didn’t like her but just wanted something…more. A light that would illuminate the darkness he constantly sees.
And then this man came to take him away. His father allowed it as he didn’t have much time left and wanted him to live for himself, and not the clan. He heeded his father’s dying request and left with this man to live on Earth. Toneri had no expectations once they arrived but he was now rethinking his previous thought.
Because he found it!
He found his light!
Toneri, mesmerized by Naruto’s presence, grabs hold of his hand, “Likewise, Naruto.” He says, smiling.
“Can we go play?” Naruto asked.
Ryōkan sees the two bonding already, “I’ll allow it.” He watches them run off but stay inside the compound. It would seem bringing Ōtsutsuki Toneri here was the right choice. Him being from the branch family means nothing as he is still an Ōtsutsuki. Naruto will need him as a pillar of companionship and trust. He scans the surroundings of the compound and so far finds nothing unusual. It would seem the old fool kept his word and stayed out of their affairs. Those humans wearing masks called ANBU haven’t been seen watching the premises, or when they took Naruto out into the village.
The only thing he won’t say is about Naruto’s parentage. For some strange reason he’s keeping that information to himself. They could force him to speak about it to their youngest however doing so would serve them no purpose.
‘That picture…’ He was recalling the photo of a spikey haired blonde male with similar blue eyes, ‘These humans are such blind fools. Or perhaps they purposefully choose to stay in ignorance, and continue to hate.’ Both are idiotic choices no matter who you ask. Why do humans let something as trivial as hatred blind them from seeing what needs to be seen?
Ryōkan pauses and turns to observe the trees around the compound. He dismissed the mild disturbance in favor of focusing on more important tasks.
The next day, Gesshū brought home a young, shy, red haired girl and her mother. He felt pride for finding two members of the Uzumaki clan and Naruto was happy to have more family. The girl’s name was Karin as introduced by her mother, Hisa. Originally they both were living in Kusagakure no Sato but living there came with a price. They were only allowed to stay if Hisa used her powers to heal the injured of the village. And her method of healing others was…well, let’s just say it was better left unsaid.
Naruto was ecstatic to have them both here and greeted them happily. Hisa smiled at him, unlike the other adults in the village she greeted him back with a kind expression. That’s another thing the adults don’t do around here, save for Teuchi and his daughter. Karin had never been around another child her age before and was naturally shy around Naruto. But seeing his warm, friendly aura made her feel safe and protected. So she slowly came out from behind her mother to greet him.
Once the ice was broken between the children they ran off to play. Hisa stood there with a smiling Gesshū as she watched her daughter smile and laugh after meeting someone new. It warmed her heart.
“Thank you. For bringing us here.” She thanks him, sincerely. Never in her wildest dreams could she have imagined leaving Kusagakure in favor of living here in Konoha. In fact she believed leaving was impossible. After showing her healing abilities to the head of the village she became an asset to them—a useful tool to be kept under lock and key. And that lock was the village.
But there was no key.
There was only a lock to keep her confined within the village. If she were to try escaping then her daughter would be used as means to force her obedience. In their eyes the two of them were property, not even seen as human beings. Only tools to make the village stronger and acquiring a unique healer such herself was part of that. Still, she made the choice to seek asylum there and had to pay an equal price to stay. So long as she remained useful they had a home.
But no freedom.
“You don’t have to thank me. We’re family, after all.” Gesshū didn’t mind the gratitude but there was no need for it. He brought them here for Naruto’s sake and that alone was enough for him, “Relax and enjoy yourself.”
“Um, if you don’t mind me asking. What did you say to Zōsui? How did you persuade him to let us leave?” The man wouldn’t have just let them leave the village without protest. She knew his personality enough to know he’d never let important assets leave the village. And if anyone so much as tried to take them away, he would use whatever means necessary to stop them..
Gesshū doesn’t answer her question and instead smiles innocently, “Don’t worry about it. Just spend time with your daughter.” Of course he could tell her what happened to Zōsui, but he’d prefer not to traumatize the woman.
She seemed to take the hint of not asking anymore questions and went to check on Karin. Once out of sight he focused his attention elsewhere outside the compound. It seems he caught a whiff of something just like his brother but he was more amused than annoyed.
‘I see.’ He smiles, finding fun with the situation, ‘This might actually be a little entertaining.’
With that train of thought he leaves.
For the next two weeks their small family continued to grow. Ryōkan brought back a boy with orange hair and matching eyes, as well as a boy with white hair and purple eyes. The boy with the orange hair was Jūgo, while the white haired boy was Suigetsu.
Like with Toneri, Jūgo immediately latched onto Naruto upon being exposed to his presence that radiated warmth. His mind felt calmer and more sane than what it is usually. Suigetsu was more interested in Toneri but still liked Naruto enough to treat him like a little brother.
Gesshū came back with another boy. He had pale skin, vivid green eyes, two scarlet dots on his forehead with long shoulder-length white hair. His name was Kimimaro and was introduced as his son. This earned him a questioning look from his brother but he just shrugged and replied.
“Being a parent seems promising.”
Confused as everyone was by this they took it in stride.
Kimimaro didn’t care for the weirdness of the situation and was just happy someone referred to him as their “son.” This man told him he was going to be part of a new family that protects their own. He was finally given a purpose after wandering in his loneliness for so long. He decided that his new purpose was to protect his family from harm both within and outside the village. Naruto was considered the young heir of both the Ōtsutsuki and Uzumaki clan’s. His bright, cheerful smile was unknown to someone like him who hasn’t experienced such a thing before. To protect that innocence he will dedicate his life to protecting Naruto, and supporting his father.
Somehow the two brothers were able to find more members of the Uzumaki clan. It was a question of how but it doesn’t matter in the end because now they don’t have to hide in fear anymore. Some of the Uzumaki clan members that were brought here were either alone or brought their own families. There weren’t much of the Uzumaki clan left but for the very few they did find were brought here. Hiruzen allowed the refugees to come into the village and settle in the compound without protest.
The only ones protesting were the elders but gone mostly ignored. Hiruzen was keeping to the terms given to him by the brothers and wasn’t too keen on breaking them. The clan heads were concerned about the merging of two clans because they would have more power, and that was a troubling thought. Hiruzen assured them that wasn’t the case. Since both clans were small they decided to join together as a sign of unity. They seemed to believe his words but in the back of their minds there was still doubt.
Gesshū and Ryōkan decided to create puppets in place of the Ōtsutsuki clan. The puppets could move and speak on their own. It was instilled in them to be respectful towards Naruto since he’s the heir to both clans. Once everyone was finally settled in it was time to start training since they would be going to the academy. Both brother’s trained not just Naruto but the other children as well. Personally they believed tithe academy was a waste of time, but the Hokage insisted. The old man was willing to agree to their terms, however, he insisted Naruto learn to be a shinobi.
Naruto had mixed feelings about it since that means he’ll be around other children his age. But since Toneri, Karin, and the others were also going he won’t be lonely. Kimimaro started earlier than them after showing the Hokage and the council what he was capable of. Naruto didn’t understand why Ryōkan called them “greedy fools” but he will when he’s older.
Two months later. They joined the academy.
Naruto and Toneri stood next to each other as they were outside along with other children. Karin, Suigetsu, and Jūgo were standing close to them. Seeing the tree together made for a very funny combination. Karin was both the brawn and brain, Suigetsu was the speed, and Jūgo acted as a tank. They’ve already developed a bond, as evident when Karin would always scold Suigetsu and threaten him, playfully. Suigetsu thought it was funny to get under her skin because her reactions were hilarious, and Jūgo was a calm, silent type but intervened when it would almost come to physical blows between them.
Naruto and Toneri were inseparable. Ever since their first meeting the two boys have been thick as thieves. They were always together. The two were even holding hands. Naruto wanted to make sure his best friend/brother knew he was right here and not going anywhere. He wasn’t doing this because Toneri was blind but because he hasn’t interacted with other children aside from his family. That’s why Naruto was on guard, even being in a crowd like this has him on edge. But it wasn’t only that. Some, if not all the other parents were giving him those looks, and it only got worse when he arrived here. At first he was upset by this but now it’s starting to bother him in a different way. He’s never been more happy to have Gesshū-nii here with him standing with the parents, and even he was given a wide berth.
Gesshū-nii didn’t seem to mind and even smiled at them. Naruto could feel they were afraid of Gesshū-nii because both of his older brothers are strong. He can also hear the whispering and like usual they weren’t trying to be subtle about it.
Ignore them.
That’s right.
He doesn’t have to listen to their hate.
He doesn’t have to acknowledge their presence.
He doesn’t have to do anything.
As if sensing his thoughts, Toneri squeezed his hand. He responded by doing the same. Everything will be fine. Even if he’s treated the same here like he is in the village it doesn’t matter.
Not anymore.
大筒木
“Starting today I will be your instructor, my name is Umino Iruka and it’s a pleasure to meet all of you.” Iruka said with a smile.
‘Liar.’ Naruto says inside his head. He can feel their sensei’s emotions and while he was warm with the other students the same can’t be said for him. Not that he wasn’t surprised because he expected it. Seriously, just what has he done that was so bad for the shinobi and civilians to treat him this way? Why hate him when he hasn’t done anything wrong?
And the man wasn’t being subtle about his dislike towards him either. The most obvious was when he took attendance and got to his name. His tone changed from welcoming to the opposite the moment he called out his name. Making it clear that his presence here was not a welcomed one, and that they had no choice but to accept the Hokage’s orders. Yeah, well, he doesn’t want to be here, either. There’s nothing the Academy can teach him that he can’t learn from home.
He felt drained as the day dragged on. Being able to sense a person’s negative emotion is not a good thing. Being in the same room with someone who dislikes you to the point of ignoring your existence feels horrible. That’s the worst part. Instead of openly glaring at him like everyone else, he ignored him instead. Naruto noticed some of the villagers were doing the same. Since glaring at him would get them in trouble with his brothers they decided to ignore him like he didn’t exist.
How cruel.
Naruto felt bad for the rest of his family because now they’ll be treated the same way. But it seems he had nothing to worry about. If the teachers were determined to be hostile towards him through his days attending the Academy then they’ll respond in kind.
And they did just that.
Karin gave attitude to not only Iruka but all the other instructors. She’d also insult them and make the instructors look like idiots. Suigetsu started making snide comments. He would make fun of the instructors and give them nicknames, but not the friendly kind. Jūgo was silent. If his staring wasn’t enough to make them uncomfortable then him staying silent was equally unnerving. Toneri turned out to be the worst of them all. He decided to copy the villagers by ignoring the instructors when his name was called. In other words, he was giving them the cold shoulder.
To his relief, the day was finally over and he could go home. He doesn’t bother giving Iruka a farewell for the day as he knew it would only make the man dislike him more. So he doesn’t say anything and just leaves.
“Pieces of shit.” Karin cursed.
“Language.” Jūgo chastises.
“Nah, I’m with Karin on this one.” Suigetsu says, taking her side, “I always heard Konoha was a peaceful village that was all warm and welcoming. Talk about a dose of reality.” They already heard ahead of time how everyone in this village treats Naruto but to actually see it for themselves made it all the more real.
“Not everything is as it seems.” Jūgo was the most upset about Naruto’s unfair treatment. For someone who is the embodiment of light itself to be treated with such callous and contempt upset him. But he kept his emotions under control and didn’t lash out.
Toneri squeezed Naruto’s hand, “Naruto, are you okay?”
“I’m not, but it’s fine.” Naruto smiles, “I don’t have to care about what they think of me anymore. So it doesn’t matter.” Now that he has his family by his side, why should he care about what the people here think of him? Sure he was sad at first but now he doesn’t care anymore.
Toneri was still worried but didn’t ask him about it again.
That night when the moon was at its fullest…
…Naruto saw the truth.
“I’m going to pull the Kyūbi out from you and destroy Konoha.”
A man shrouded in a black robe, wearing an orange spiral mask declared to a red haired woman, chained and too weak to do anything.
The man pulls out the Kyūbi and controls it. Its red eyes are overshadowed by red eyes with black tomoe. A blonde man with blue eyes appears to take the woman away, the Kyūbi rampages through the village, people are screaming and running away. Shinobi try to stop it themselves but are unsuccessful. Dying like cockroaches that never stood a chance from the beginning.
There are many faces that appear, one being the Sandaime Hokage. He’s geared up in armor, ready to fight.
The blonde man and the mysterious intruder fight with the latter retreating when things don’t go his way. Many shinobi, including the Sandaime, gather around an area where the same red haired woman from before appears with the blonde man and a newborn. Same blond hair as the man with three whisker marks on each cheek.
Golden chains wrap around the Kyūbi in a tight grip, making sure to never let go. The two speak softly with affection, Kushina and Minato. Letters on the man’s white coat read ‘The Fourth Hokage.’ Enraged, the Kyūbi stretches out its one claw to kill the newborn but both move to protect the child. After the sealing, the two slowly lose the light in their eyes.
“Sandaime.” Kushina calls out to him, “Please look after…my child…” She breathes slowly, “His name is…Naruto.”
“Naruto.” I’ll remember. I’ll take full responsibility.” Sandaime looks down at the peacefully sleeping newborn,“So please don’t speak any more…for his sake, too.” But it was too late. Both Kushina and Minato were dead.
“Kushina…I swear!”
A mass funeral was held for the fallen, including the Fourth Hokage and Kushina. The Sandaime is there as well. No one speaks, heads are lowered to respect the fallen as dark clouds cover the sky.
Naruto was sitting up, hunched over. In one of his eyes the Senrigan was active as he had a horrifying realization. What he saw wasn’t a dream but of the past! Everything he saw really happened! The Kyūbi being freed, it being controlled into attacking the village, people dying trying to stop it. That man and woman…Kushina…Minato…they called his name…
They gave him his name!
The Fourth Hokage and Kushina are his parents!
He’s the son of the Fourth Hokage!
Why would they keep this from him? And only that but he also had the Kyūbi sealed inside him! By his own father! That’s why everyone in this village hates him! They know but not him, even the Sandaime…
Naruto’s spiraling thoughts come to a halt.
That’s right…even the Sandaime knew. He knew from the beginning and didn’t say anything. He knew this whole time and said nothing! The answers that he’s been wanting to know, desperate to know and this whole time it was being kept from him. He asked why the villagers hated him, he didn’t get a straight answer, he asked about who his parents were and he wasn’t even allowed to know that much?!
Naruto gripped his head with both hands before screaming.
He screamed till his throat burned raw. All of the anguish and pain brought upon him was being let out. His screams expressed feelings of anguish, hurt, pain and…betrayal. That’s right. His small trust which he gave to only a small few had been betrayed. And the man who betrayed that trust was the Hokage of this village. All this time he knew about him and said nothing. Who else knows? Some of the ninja’s that were there? The possibility is high.
Why?
Why would his father do this to him?
Why would he curse him to experience hatred from everyone?
Why would the Sandaime Hokage lie to him?
Why?!
Why?!
Why?!
Why?!
Why?!
…
…
…
WHY?!
Strong arms wrap around his small frame and bring him close to a familiar chest. Ah, he knows who this warmth belongs to. He nestles further into the embrace and finally calms down but tears flow freely down his face. Naruto knows everything now. There’s no going back. Not after this.
And he wasn’t the only one to think the same.
When he finally calmed down he told them what he saw. Everything played out like a movie, scenes that were important and crucial to see. His family had varying looks of disbelief, anger, and disgust. Gesshū-nii and Ryōkan-nii were furious. They probably had suspicions about some things already but didn’t tell him anything due to lack of information. That’s no longer a problem.
Ryōkan explained the Senrigan is capable of seeing any past event up until the moment of the wielder’s birth. Naruto wonders if he subconsciously activated his eyes so he could understand why he was hated so much. Maybe his dōjutsu responded to his emotions and showed him what he wanted to see. Whatever the case, he knows the truth of why people here hate him. Because the Kyūbi was sealed inside him—done by the hands of his father the Fourth Hokage.
Naruto needed more information before anything else and looked to his brother’s for guidance. They understood what he wanted as did the rest of his family. He’s going to investigate the secrets of this village and watch everything.
No one will be able to lie to his face ever again.
大筒木
She was always watching him.
Watching ever since that day.
Hinata’s been curious about the boy with soft blond hair and sky blue eyes since he protected her from those bullies. That incident was the last time she saw him. Or at least it was until she saw him again at the Academy. Seeing him again after so long made her heart flutter. What drew her in was his natural presence. It was soothing, protective, and warm. A kind presence.
Which is why she’s confused.
Why is it that all the adults hate him? Her clan included. Asking her father proved to be useless as he wanted her to focus more on herself rather than someone who won’t amount to anything. So she decided to watch over him and see. Hinata doesn’t know who the two men with the Byakugan are but they protect him and make the adults around him cower.
She finally knew after overhearing her father talk about a new clan moving to the village. The Ōtsutsuki-Uzumaki clan. Hinata recalls the discomfort everyone felt from having them here but that was all. Nothing changed how the adults treated him.
Iruka-sensei was no different. The way he said the boy’s name was laced with something distant compared to how he addressed the other students. She knows it wasn’t just her that noticed it, either. A teacher is someone who sets an example for students so they can guide them and learn from their experiences. That includes how to treat others. He did not set a good example for some of the other students were looking at the blond differently. Even though it was only the first day.
Hinata didn’t like that.
Today is a new day and something has changed. She can tell because while the light was still in his eyes, he became…closed off.
No—what he buried deep down and sealed away was his heart. Hinata was sad to see it, but knew sooner or later this outcome would happen. He paid attention to lessons but refused to respond when asked a question. When asked again, he would feign naïveté, as if he didn’t hear his name being called. When spoken to harshly by the instructor, he wouldn’t retaliate. The boy created his own world where no one other than his family may enter. Seeing this was heartbreaking but she finally knew his name.
Naruto.
Her gray world was filled with light. Naruto is the light that illuminates the darkness within, even erasing her sadness. Hinata doesn’t want to drift away but to come near and embrace it. During their break she spots him alone by the tree with the swing. He stands there in solitude as the wind caresses his skin under the shade of the tree. Keeping distance from others…is lonely. She doesn’t want to see that, so then she won’t let it happen.
Gathering all of her courage she approaches him. He senses her right away, blue eyes making contact with her own. She sees surprise, suspicion, and confusion. It’s okay, she means no harm, never to him. His eyes never leave her as she keeps walking towards him. Hinata can feel her heart pounding loudly in her chest the closer she gets.
“Um, hello?” She managed to greet him despite being nervous. He doesn’t say a word and continues to stare but it wasn't hostile. Almost like he was trying to dissect her true motives and decide if she was being genuine or not, “D-Do you remember me? We met in the winter…” her words trailed off as she waited for a response.
His eyes widened in recognition, “You…” he made a face, most likely trying to remember her name.
“M-my name is Hyūga Hinata! I wanted to thank you for what you did, so…thank you!” Hinata thanks nervously before bowing. She stayed like that until he spoke again.
“Why…?” Hinata raised her head and saw his expression changed again, but this time more…hopeful? Oh, no one has thanked him before have they? She believes it. None of the adults would ever thank him but she wasn’t like them. He saved her from those boys and she never got the chance to thank him for it until now, “Weren’t you told to stay away from me by your clan? Why would you ignore them and talk to me?”
Hinata takes a deep breath, “B-Because you saved me. You didn’t call me bad names like they did, and…” swallowing her saliva, she continued, …you are a kind person.” She says, smiling.
Her words made his expression soften and for seemed like an eternity she saw it.
His smile.
“Thank you…” He steps out from the shadows and into the light, “Uzumaki Ōtsutsuki Naruto, but you can just call me Naruto. My full name is kinda long.”
Hinata felt her heart soar when he spoke to her softly. “Naruto.” She was committing his name to memory, to her very being. He told her his name and she can call him by his first name.
“N-Naruto-kun, um, d-do you want to be friends?” Hinata knows she’s being bold by asking it straight to his face. But she doesn't want him to lose him.
Naruto was again taken by surprise before laughing, an action she didn’t expect, “Y-Your amazing…! The first person in this whole village my age that actually wants to be my friend!” He calmed down and smiled, “Sure. I’d like that, Hinata-chan.”
Hinata felt relieved he accepted and even gave her a nickname!
For the rest of recess the two sat there under the tree and talked about random things. If any instructor was watching this they would see two children talking and enjoying each other's company. There were some eyes on them but the two paid them no mind as they settled in their own world.
That day, a lavender flower was able to draw out the sun.
大筒木
A year later something tragic happened within the village.
All members of the Uchiha clan save for two…were massacred. There were many factors that happened to lead up to this and Naruto knows because he was watching. He watches everything. He’s been using the Senrigan to watch the happenings within the village. The Hokage, his Advisors, the Clans, the Shinobi, and even the ANBU. Naruto watched all of them go about their daily lives being none the wiser about being watched. Not like they can do anything about it, especially since they can’t even tell they're being watched.
Naruto saw through his eyes how the Uchiha clan was being treated by both the villagers and shinobi. Kimimaro became close with one of the Uchiha’s and were in the same ANBU squad. He said they were both similar. From graduating the Academy early, to being nominated for the Chunin Exams, and being recommended for ANBU. They became close friends and talked about their families. Naruto believes his older brother about how his friend was pushed into a corner to do something unforgivable.
Which wouldn’t have happened had not been for that one-eyed rat. Naruto knows his name but refuses to use it. Someone like that rat doesn’t deserve to be called by their name, much less be considered a human being. Naruto told his older brothers what was going on with the Uchiha clan and they prepared themselves. It ended up being the right move.
Gesshū-nii brought back an unconscious Uchiha with no eyes. Since he was watching the one-eyed rat closely he knew why the Uchiha was missing one of his eyes. As for the other one…he understands why he gave it over to his friend. While Karin-nee and her mother were fixing him up, Naruto went back to watching things. He and the rest of his family acted normal at the Academy but during recess he told Hinata to stay with her clan instead of coming over to his place.
Naruto convinced her to train with him at his home since her clan was holding her back. Ryō-nii agreed with him. He personally trained both him and Hinata. She learned a lot from his big brother and Ryō-nii would give her tips and pointers on what kind of style was best. Hinata’s movements were fluid and graceful while also being fast. She was a good healer, too. Karin’s mom said so herself, so she taught Hinata everything she knows. It also helped that Karin-nee took a liking to her and would spar with his friend. Everyone likes Hinata.
Which is why he told her to stay home on the night it happened.
Out of curiosity he would watch the man responsible for slaughtering his clan. Even caught a glimpse of him watching the Academy one time. He figured the person he must have been watching over was his younger brother, Sasuke. He’s never interacted with him at the academy and doesn’t see the need to. The only thing he knows about Sasuke is that he’s popular in the academy with both the instructors and girls of their class, minus Hinata and Karin. Some of the boys don’t like him but it’s not his problem. Sasuke can have all the attention and adoration because to him it isn’t worth it.
Having all the attention on you isn’t a good thing because people either expect too much or expect nothing. That’s a curse in itself. Well, their circumstances are different but he had a feeling Sasuke could handle it. Best of luck.
Back to the point. Aside from Sasuke there’s another Uchiha who still lives.
Naruto was staring at his unconscious form. He lay there motionless to the world as though he were dead. When in reality he was sleeping peacefully, a bandage wrapped around his empty eye sockets. Uchiha Shisui. Naruto’s watched him a couple of times to see what he was like, and after observing, he can’t understand how someone like Shisui is an Uchiha? Someone as humble and down-to-earth as him can’t be an Uchiha, but he is. Naruto really likes Shisui that’s why he asked his brothers to save him. And they did. While they were able to save his life, he’s upset that Shisui can no longer see.
Gesshū-nii said he knows where to get Shisui a new pair though. He wisely didn’t ask.
Naruto looks up at the moon and notices its color.
“It’s red…”
大筒木
“He looks lonely.” Toneri was referring to Sasuke. After the incident known as the “Uchiha Massacre” the academy was closed for a week. Students who’d heard about what happened from their parents expressed their condolences but that only deepens a fresh open wound. Instead of cheap sympathy, what Sasuke needs is support from those around him. Although in a twisted village like this he doubts that’ll happen.
“More like sad. He lost his whole clan at the hands of his older brother and was left alive to relive those painful memories.” Naruto can’t even begin to imagine the pain the other boy was feeling. Having your entire clan exterminated in the blink of an eye one day was enough to make anyone close off from the world.
“I don’t believe there’s anyone in this village who understands his pain.” Toneri says, seeing some girls trying and failing to comfort him.
Naruto stands up, sighing, “They need to give it a rest, already,” he says, annoyed by their cheap sympathy, “Let’s go.” Lingering here any longer was pointless.
Toneri stays to observe the situation a little while longer before following after the blond, ‘I hope that someday…someday, you will find your light.’ Just as he found his.
Life returned to normal or as normal for them. The most drastic change was Sasuke. He stopped smiling and always had a frown on his face and his whole demeanor screamed, ‘Get lost.’ His fan club liked the change but the other boys thought he was trying to be cool. Whatever sympathy they felt for him after his clan was murdered changed from compassion to hatred. Typical.
Naruto knows why the sudden change. He could see it in Sasuke’s eyes, a burning desire to accomplish what could possibly be a long time goal.
Revenge.
And while he has no opinion on the subject matter, something in the back of his mind was telling him revenge was stupid. Which it is stupid but maybe this will give him something to live for? Or maybe it’ll be worse for him? Naruto isn’t sure.
“Okay, the next sparing pair will be…” Naruto drowns out Iruka’s voice as he discreetky uses his Senrigan spy on the village. Aside from some of the villagers talking about having a memorial for the Uchiha clan there wasn’t anything new. Having a memorial? These were the same people who treated the Uchiha clan like pariah’s—same as him. What’s wrong with this village?! How can they be suspicious of an entire clan one day and then mourn while praising them the next?
Is it brainwashing or are the villagers and shinobi here really that stupid?
…Naruto.” Oh, his name was called. It’s weird Iruka would even let him keep doing these spat sessions after what happened last time. What he did wasn’t excessive at all and besides the other boy was picking on Hinata, he deserved it. And his family agreed with him. So who is facing this time?
Naruto stepped in the circle and came face to face with Sasuke Uchiha himself. Huh, that’s a new one. He figures Iruka decided to pair him up with one of the clan kids instead of a civilian this time. Smart choice. Sasuke looks like he can hold his own in a fight.
“Both of you make the Seal of Confrontation.” Iruka says, as both boys bring up two fingers. There was whispering among the other students as some were saying Sasuke would win while some said Naruto. Sasuke’s fan club was the most vocal while his family and Hinata were on his side.
“Begin!”
Sasuke hadn't even moved yet and he found himself looking into clear blue eyes. He was on his back as Naruto was above him, a hand around his neck. Fast. So fast no one saw it coming, not even Iruka, who stood there dumbfounded. Naruto stood up and backed away so his opponent could stand. No one said a word until Suigetsu started snickering, “Ahhh, your Sasuke-kun lost. Too bad.” What a troll. And of course that got a response from Sasuke’s fans who couldn’t believe he lost to him of all people. They won’t make it in the ninja world if they don’t get their priorities in check.
“The match is over!” Iruka announced, “Both of you make the Seal of Reconciliation.” Both of them do just that but something feels strange. Sasuke’s eyes have changed. He walks back in line to stand next to Toneri, ignoring the students who ask him questions about the spar.
‘Like a spark…’ He thinks.
大筒木
“Has everyone in the Academy gone crazy?” Naruto asks Toneri, confused as to why any of them are trying to talk to him. Ever since his spar with Sasuke his classmates have been bothering him, including some clan kids. Even the instructor Iruka wanted to have a talk and he hates him! It was so confusing and it was making him uncomfortable. He wanted attention in the past but not anymore, so why all of a sudden? He’s grateful to his family for keeping them away, and he’s been ignoring Iruka since day one, but they just won’t stop!
Toneri was amused, “I think they want to try and get to know you.” He has to admit that this sudden interest in his cousin was quite strange. It came out of nowhere and very suddenly, Naruto is right to be cautious as he doesn’t know what their motives might be. Umino Iruka is especially suspicious. Since the first day he didn’t acknowledge Naruto’s existence and never called on him to answer a question. Not that it bothered Naruto all that much, for he opted to give him the same treatment. So what changed? Even went so far as to call out to his cousin but like usual, Naruto ignored him and went home with them.
“No thanks. Aside from Ichiraku family and Hinata, I’m not interested in getting to know anyone in this village.” Naruto refused to even try.
“Sasuke has been keeping an eye on you, too.” Toneri reveals, chuckling at the blond’s annoyed groan.
Naruto wondered if he could just stop going to the Academy but knows the Hokage will find out about it.
He really doesn’t like this village.

Chapter Text
‘I’m hungry.’ Those were the thoughts of a now 12 year-old Naruto Uzumaki. The preteen has grown over the years and it shows with his hair growing slightly, with his bangs growing cheek-length. His attire consists of a blue light stripe black color hoodie with both the Ōtsutsuki and Uzumaki symbol on the back and black pants. Laying on his stomach was a white rabbit with two small horns sticking out of its head. Naruto absentmindedly rubbed the sleeping rabbits back, liking how soft her fur feels against his fingers.
Rei
Naruto gave her that name because her clear white eyes remind him of the moon. Rei isn’t exactly what one would call a normal rabbit, but it would be boring to reveal what she really is now. Anyway, he was enjoying his alone time as he stared up at the sky from the Hokage Monument. Today was graduation day but he’s not exactly looking forward to it. Why would he? The chances of dying out there are high and it could happen the second you let your guard down. Constantly having your guard up is enough to stress anyone out and he’d rather not be stressed at all if he can help it.
“What’s so good about being a ninja, anyway?” Naruto muttered to no one in particular. A shadow looks over him as the face of Toneri comes into view.
“I found you.” Toneri smiles, “Are you hiding up here until the exam starts?” He questioned.
“I am. I’m not too keen on being around the rest of our “hopeful graduates” if you know what I mean.” Naruto wasn’t exactly a huge fan of crowds. The civilian kids are a real nuisance and while the clan kids aren’t as bad, being around them isn’t ideal either for obvious reasons.
Toneri sits next to him, “I understand. Hinata’s worried you’ll try to skip the graduation exam so she asked me to find you.” He explains his reason for being here.
Naruto sighs, “Seriously?” With a grunt he sits up and places Rei in his lap, “I can’t believe she told you about my secret hiding spot. I feel betrayed.”
“So you say, but I know you're smiling.” Toneri wasn’t falling for that one.
“Guilty as charged.” Naruto shrugged his shoulders then let out a tired sigh, “Ready to get this over with?” He asked.
“Ready when you are.” Toneri replies, standing back up along with Naruto. The two headed back to the academy and arrived just in time for the written exam. There are two parts of the graduation exam, the written and practical. Naruto wasn’t worried about either and just wanted to get the exam over with. With everyone done with the written exam it was now time for the practical.
Naruto was standing away from the other graduates and keeping company with Hinata and his family, “When is this gonna be over?” He doesn’t want to sound like he’s complaining but can’t help it.
“It’s almost over. Just be patient for a little longer.” Hinata says, assuring him the exam would be over soon. Not soon enough in his opinion. She’s changed the most since the day they met. Her hair was now bob-style reaching her shoulders, wearing a lavender hooded jacket with light purple sleeves with her clan symbol on each side of the shoulder. She was also wearing purple pants.
Naruto leaned his head against her’s, “Fine…” he relents.
“What’s this?” Karin spoke up, hands in her hip, “You’re looking more bored than usual, Naruto.” His cousin also changed over the years in both body and mind. Her red hair was tied in a high ponytail with her bangs on either side of her face. She was wearing a black jacket with the Uzumaki symbol on the back with matching black shorts, “Are you still half asleep?”
“I’m not.” Naruto denies, “And why do you look so fired up? It’s not like you’ll be fighting anyone.”
Karin smirked, “Cause we get to show off some jutsu during this part, right?” From what she knows the Chūnin instructors will be observing them for this part.
“Yeah, but I think you only have to perform the Bunshin technique, or something.” Naruto was half listening during the explanation but he has a hunch he’s right.
“Seriously? That’s boring.” Karin crossed her arms, disappointed, “I wanted to show off a new jutsu, too.”
A familiar voice scoffed, “You just wanna beat people up, don’t cha.” Suigetsu hasn’t changed all that much except for his sense of style. He was wearing a white jacket with light blue pants.
“Are you offering?” Karin raised her fist making him flinch and raise his hands in a mock surrender.
“I’ll pass…you might actually kill me.” Suigetsu would rather not have a repeat of their last spar, which involved both Naruto and Iruka having to break it up.
“You two shouldn’t fight here.” Jūgo had a growth spurt, being the tallest of their generation. His hairstyle stayed the same with the only difference being him now wearing a long sleeve gray shirt that came with a black cape, and dark purple pants.
Karin rolled her eyes, “Don’t be stupid, Jūgo. Suigetsu’s too weak to give me a good workout.” She insults.
“Hah, who are you calling weak?” Suigetsu scowls, “You got me beat in strength but I’m the best sword fighter.”
“Hoh? That sounded like a challenge.” Karin smirked, “How about we skip this part of the exam and have a go at it right here?” She dared him to take her up on it.
“Stop. If you two blow this place up we’ll have to help repair it.” Naruto wasn’t in the mood to do that, “Just wait till we get home, you two can beat each other senseless till your heart's content then.” It was a better compromise than having a death match here of all places. Shinobi school or not, no need to traumatize the other graduates.
“He/She started it!” Both of them say, pointing to the other.
Naruto gives them a dry expression, “Really?” These two do realize they aren’t six year-old's anymore, right?
“It really is nice seeing how close you two are.” Toneri says, smiling at them.
“Close,” huh? That’s not what I’d call it.” Naruto says, watching the two hurl insults at each other.
“Like brother and sister.” Hinata chimes in.
A fitting comparison.
No matter how many times these two want to rip each other's throats out, in the end they’re still family.
No more words were exchanged between them as it was time for the practical exam to begin. One by one a potential graduate would enter and leave the room. Some came out wearing headbands but there were those who didn’t. Naruto could tell those who didn’t pass were civilian kids but there were some that had headbands. Sakura was one of the civilian kids to pass without much issue, which was good for her. At first glance she may not look like much but with some training she might surprise everyone.
Karin came out with a headband but didn’t appear to be happy about it. The reason being was because the practical was boring and really didn't have a battle portion. She was irritated but will get over it soon. After Hinata and Toneri went, it was finally his turn.
Naruto entered the room and was met with two people he did not want to be in the same room with. Umino Iruka and Mizuki. Of course it would be these two. Iruka aside, Mizuki is an individual he doesn’t like or care for. He actually feels sorry for Iruka because the man was naive to not see the true nature of his fellow chūnin. Then again he could just tell him but opted not to for one simple reason: Iruka would never trust his word. So why bother?
These few years the man’s hatred has slowly faded but that means nothing. Naruto surmised the reason was because of the “incident.” Iruka tried reaching out to him after his spar with Sasuke but after that incident he was persistent. Even came by the compound once but his older brother told him politely to leave. He’s kept him at arm’s length since then and that isn’t going to change anytime soon.
Mizuki was easy to deal with. He outright hated him and his negative emotions only confirmed it. Not that he needs to sense his negative emotions to see that. That fake smile may fool Iruka and everyone else in the village but not him or his family. His chakra felt nasty, like eating something that’s gone bad for a couple of days. Karin said it felt disgusting, like a horrible putrid smell left out in the sun on purpose. She always made a face when he was around and it bothered her so much she told him to his face that he made her feel sick. The constipated look on Mizuki’s face had Suigetsu in stitches.
Naruto can tolerate Iruka but Mizuki is another matter. He’s curious to see if Mizuki will try something so he won’t be able to graduate. It would be interesting to see what he does but Naruto needs to pass so Mizuki will just have to be disappointed.
He forgets about Mizuki when Iruka tells him to start. First was the replacement technique, transformation, and finally…
Naruto made a familiar hand sign, “Kage Bunshin no Jutsu (Shadow Clone Jutsu).” A perfect copy stands next to him with the same neutral expression. Iruka and Mizuki’s jaws dropped in disbelief. Their reaction is reasonable and makes sense because they weren’t expecting him to use a B-rank jutsu during a graduation exam!
A tense silence reigned over the room. Naruto would be lying if he said their astonished expressions didn’t make him feel pleased. Impressing them wasn’t the goal but he wanted them to know of his abilities, and revealing it now was the right time. Since performing the standard Clone jutsu wouldn’t do him any good he decided to use Shadow Clone Jutsu instead. Using a more advanced jutsu isn’t against the rules so even if they want to argue against this it would only make them look foolish.
So what will it be?
The clock is ticking.
大筒木
“You passed.” Toneri says, stating the obvious as he sees the headband in Naruto’s hand.
“Sure did.” Naruto knew he would pass but still expected Mizuki to try something, only it didn’t happen. Iruka passed him after being impressed by him being able to perform the Shadow Clone Jutsu. Mizuki congratulated him on the outside but the man was seething inwardly. Good. So far everything is going the way he wants.
“Should we get ready? He’s most likely already getting things prepared.” Toneri asks him.
“Might as well. I’ll meet you there so make sure to get the timing just right for this to work.” Naruto emphasized, handing him the headband.
“I will.” Toneri promised.
Naruto poofed from existence. Toneri wondered if Iruka and Mizuki noticed that the Naruto taking the exam was a Shadow Clone instead of the real one. Unlikely, he concludes. The only reason Toneri could tell is because it was part of the plan. And the subject of said plan was already on the move but not headed in the direction of the tower just yet.
Toneri walked away from the building, “So far everything is going as it should be.” He says, smiling, “I wonder who will be the most surprised?”
Day turned to night as chaos descended inside the Hokage’s Residence. Someone had stolen the Scroll of Sealing—it is a scroll containing instructions about how to perform various dangerous jutsu. When certain jutsu were deemed forbidden during the reign of the First Hokage, it was decided to place the information of said forbidden jutsu within the scroll. The purpose of keeping the scroll stored at the Hokage Residence was not just for the Hokage’s eyes only, but to not fall into the wrong hands. Should anyone manage to take the scroll and flee with it out of the village, the consequences would be disastrous.
Which is the current situation. An unknown individual has stolen said scroll and the ANBU have been called in to find the perpetrator for stealing it. For some unknown reason Iruka was called in because the thief was someone he knew.
And he couldn’t believe what he was hearing.
“Naruto…stole the scroll?” Iruka couldn’t bring himself to believe it. If this were a few years ago where he held negative feelings towards him like everyone else then he would no doubt believe the claims given to him by Mizuki.
“Yes, apparently the Sandaime Hokage sent the ANBU to track down and apprehend him.” Mizuki lowers his head, solemnly, “The chances of him being executed for stealing the Scroll of Sealing are high. I don’t think even the Sandaime will let this slide.” His words reign true as the shinobi of the village know that stealing the Scroll of Sealing is an act of treason of the highest caliber. First comes the interrogation of the traitor before the final and expected outcome, death.
Iruka lowers his head, ‘But why? You worked so hard to make it to this point, so why throw it all away?!’ Sure the two don’t get along, and mostly some of that is on Iruka but for Naruto to do something treacherous such as stealing the Scroll of Seals sounds too hard to believe. So the only explanation could be that…
“I’m gonna go find Naruto!” Iruka says to a surprised Mizuki, “I don’t believe he would do something like this!” He was gone quickly to go look for the blonde to see for himself rather than listen to false accusations. A sinister smirk appeared on Mizuki’s face as he too left the scene. Unknown to the two men, their whole conversation had been watched by the subject himself, Naruto.
大筒木
“Huh, I wasn’t expecting Iruka to stick up for me,” Naruto says to himself, “I guess it’s true what they say, people can change.” He was standing out in an open field in the forest, hands tucked in his pocket and leaning against a tree. Naruto couldn’t help but be curious to see the various reactions of the various shinobi when he was accused of stealing the Scroll of Seals. So he used his Senrigan to listen in and was surprised when Iruka of all people denied Mizuki’s words. Their relationship can be described as “awkward” at best. To him and the villagers he was someone to be reviled and hated because of his burden. In their eyes he’s the same as the Kyūbi and could snap at any time, killing them.
The villagers discovered pretty quickly what happens when they badmouth him to his face. He doesn't care about the dirty looks anymore. Why would he? Going about your daily life hating an innocent person for no reason is exhausting, and a waste of time. Talk about wasting energy that can be useful for something else. Since they can’t use their usual methods they decided the next best thing was to ignore him completely. Which in all honesty? It was fine with him. He suspects they won’t be changing their biased opinions about him anytime soon.
Iruka was different.
At first the man hated him like everyone else but something changed. A sudden shift one might say. It started with his spar against Sasuke and then the “incident” then finally…the sudden shift. Any negative emotions Iruka held towards him were gone. But there was still no trust between them. Naruto watched him closely but so far the academy instructor wasn’t faking his change of emotions. Anyway it’s not important. Iruka will be the first one to show up and then everything will fall into place there.
Speaking of which…
Iruka appeared suddenly but since Naruto knew he was coming he wasn’t surprised. Now then, time for the actors to take the stage. Let the farce begin.
“Naruto!” Iruka calls out to the silent child. Naruto just stands there against the tree before turning his head towards him with a relaxed expression.
“What are you doing here?” Naruto asks, already starting the act.
“Where’s the scroll?” Iruka questions, approaching him in a non aggressive manner. Pretending to be confused the blonde replies.
“What scroll?” Naruto has to commend himself for his ability to act. It’s something he can say for a fact that he’s good at it.
Iruka stops just short before him, “The Scroll of Sealing! Tell me honestly, did you steal it?” There was genuine concern and not a hint of an accusation in his tone.
Naruto raised a brow at him, “Scroll of Sealing? What is that, a scroll for Fūinjutsu?” Given the nature of the name one would assume it was a scroll that held sealing jutsu and nothing more. He hasn’t taken a peak at it himself but can guess it’s an important scroll meant to keep forbidden jutsu stored and out of sight of those eager to see for themselves.
Iruka breathed a sigh of relief, “I was right, you didn’t steal it. Thank goodness.” He placed a hand on his chest to stop his beating heart.
“Right, if that’s all I’m leaving.” Naruto turned to leave but Iruka stopped him.
“Wait—!” Iruka heard the sound before feeling something jab him in the leg. It was a shuriken. Naruto stopped walking to turn back around. Iruka was on the ground, gripping his leg as blood seeped through his pants.
Naruto looked up and saw none other than Mizuki standing on top of a branch with an arrogant smirk. On his back was a giant shuriken with the Scroll of Sealing at his side.
“That wasn’t a very nice thing to do, you know?” Naruto said calmly, “Isn’t attacking a comrade considered a despicable act or something?” He didn’t even hesitate to attack with the intent to kill, either. What a nasty guy.
“Heh, it’s Iruka’s own fault for being easy to fool.” Mizuki sneered down at the injured chūnin, “Did you seriously think we were friends? I hated you from the start, always acting so nice and thinking you were better than everyone all because the Sandaime took pity on you. It made me sick to my stomach.”
Iruka looked devastated by the confession.
“I only pretended to be your friend so that I could get the same attention as you did while also discreetly inflicting misery on you.” Mizuki enjoyed seeing the person he hated look so hurt and betrayed, “Yeah, there it is. That’s the look I wanted to see. How does it feel? To know that the whole time the person you thought was a friend turned out to hate you more than anything? Does it hurt?” He takes out more shuriken, “Well, this will hurt more!” Mizuki tossed another round of shuriken at Iruka, only for Naruto to intervene by blocking them with his scabbard.
“Naruto!” Iruka was surprised by the save but otherwise grateful.
“Geez, you really are a piece of work, you know that?” Naruto wasn’t impressed by Mizuki’s little rant about how much he hated Iruka because he got all the attention and he didn’t, “Befriending someone out of jealousy all because you wanted equal attention when in reality, you wanted to see them suffer. You’ve got issues.”
“Oh, well at least I’m honest and not lying about it. Unlike some people.” Mizuki smirked down at a pale-faced Iruka, “You ever wonder why everyone in the village hates you so much?”
Naruto shrugged, “It crossed my mind.” He confessed.
“No, Mizuki!” Iruka yells at him but knew the man would talk anyway.
“They’ve been lying to you the whole time, Naruto. Since the decree twelve years ago.” Mizuki ignored Iruka and kept talking.
“Okay, you’ve got my attention. Continue.” Naruto knew what he was trying to do but played along.
Mizuki didn’t comment on his calmness and only kept on speaking, “Everyone knows except you. Iruka’s trying to hide it from you even now, he’d do anything to shut me up.”
“I can see that.” Naruto was still calm, “You can keep going though.”
“Don’t tell him, it’s forbidden!” Iruka was once again ignored by both of them.
“The decree is that no one can tell you the Kyūbi is inside you.” Mizuki finishes, expecting to see the calm boy breakdown but instead had the opposite effect.
Naruto stood there for a minute, “I know.” He reveals to them. It was hard not to laugh at their expressions when he casually says he knows about the Kyūbi.
“Y…you already know…?” Iruka questions, wondering if he heard right.
“Yep.” Naruto said simply.
Iruka couldn’t believe it, “But, how…?”
Naruto shrugged again, “Curiosity,” he answers, “since no one was going to tell me anything I decided to find out for myself.” Which isn’t a lie. He wanted to know why people hated him and the Senrigan responded to his will by showing the truth. Knowing the truth hurt but in the end he accepted it. Of course he held negative feelings towards those who knew from the beginning, but he wasn't going to waste his time hating them for it. Trust was lost that day. And for good.
Iruka looked ready to say something but Naruto cut him off, “And they didn’t lie.” He said to Mizuki, “It was made into an S-rank secret, meaning they were allowed to know but not me. The reason for this was because the Sandaime wanted me to live in blissful ignorance so I could live a normal life.”
“As you can see, that backfired.” Naruto bluntly states, “Someone spilled the beans before you did and here we are. An innocent soul cursed and hated by those around him for something he never asked for,” he sounded melancholic, “how tragic.”
“Naruto…” Iruka sounded so heartbroken that it almost moved his heart. He’s so straightforward and honest about his feelings. Maybe that’s why he’s more popular than Mizuki. Because he’s both big-hearted and soft-hearted. Someone like him is wasted on this village.
“I can’t believe there’s someone dumb enough to actually break the law regarding my status as a Jinchūriki,” Naruto sighs, shaking his head, “but there’s always that one idiot in the group who can’t keep their mouth shut about keeping a secret.” He then smiled, “And speaking of secrets, why don’t we talk about yours?”
Mizuki looked confused, “What the hell are you talking about, you demon brat?” He sneered.
Naruto’s smile became sharp, “I’m talking about you killing a comrade on that important mission. You know—the one you suffocated to death?” The reaction he got was as expected. Mizuki’s eyes widened as did Iruka’s but for different reasons. Surprise and shock.
“Suffocated to death?” Iruka repeated, “What do you mean, Naruto?”
“Oh, right. I guess no one bothered to tell you about what happened.” Naruto was having fun watching Mizuki sweat and decided to add more pressure, “How about I start from the beginning?” He suggests, “You see sometime after Mizuki made chūnin, was assigned, along with two others, on the Secret Document Recovery Mission.”
Mizuki flinched.
“During their retreat, one of his comrades suffered a leg injury, and Mizuki, instead of helping him, did something else.” Naruto paused briefly to add some suspense, “He placed his hand over the man’s mouth, suffocating him to death.”
Iruka’s heart dropped. No, Mizuki would never… his thoughts trailed off as stopped himself from defending someone who used to be a comrade. After all he did almost kill him , too, so everything Naruto’s saying has to be true.
“The reason he did this was because he believed the injury would cause him to be a hindrance to the mission's success.” Naruto continues, not done giving Mizuki a taste of his own medicine, “Not only that, but he also falsely reported that his comrade died from his injury, even going so far as to exaggerate his story.” He smirked, “And the best part? No one believed it.”
“What?” Iruka questions.
“C’mon, let’s be rational here. How could a simple leg injury cause the death of a comrade when it could have been treated with the medical equipment they had with them?” Naruto didn’t have to convince Iruka of Mizuki’s sin when he can already see things for himself, “What made it worse for you was exaggerating everything in the report, which was enough for them to doubt your words. That’s why you were denied the position as an Academy instructor. Even though there was a lack of evidence that led to the investigation being dropped, the controversy alone was enough to make things difficult for you.” And that very same controversy had the other shinobi talking behind his back, hurling insults and calling him a “murderer.” In their hearts they knew what really happened which is why his fellow shinobi didn’t want to be on a mission with him.
They didn’t want Mizuki to kill them in their sleep.
“I’d ask you how it felt to kill a comrade but I already know.” Naruto never broke eye contact with the enraged chūnin, “The smile on your face said it all.”
“Shut up!” Mizuki grabbed the Fūma Shuriken off his back, “Forget framing you for stealing the Scroll of Sealing and killing Iruka, I’ll kill you right here and now! I’d be doing everyone a favor anyway!”
“Go ahead.” Naruto dares him with a mocking smile, “I’ll even stand perfectly still for you.”
“Naruto, what are you doing?!” Iruka exclaimed, “Don’t provoke him!”
“Why not? It’s fun.” Naruto shrugged, not even a little worried about the possibility of being killed.
This only angered Mizuki further, “Oh, yeah?” He brought his arm back, “See if you find this funny then!” The fūma shuriken flies through the air and towards its intended target. Iruka tried moving his body to shield the boy but there was no need.
Time stilled at the moment of impact.
Iruka gasped.
Mizuki had a look of confusion. This expression soon morphed into pain as he slowly looked down to see giant shuriken impaled his right pectoralis major. He felt red liquid gather in his throat before coughing it out, his vision started to blur as he fell forward from the branch and landed on his back. Mizuki coughed another blob of blood from his mouth, “H…How…?” Did the brat do something? No, he couldn’t have. All he did was stand there so how the hell…?
Naruto walked up to him, “You look confused. Can’t say I blame you since no one’s tried to attack me inside the village before.” Oh, there have been a few attempts from drunk villagers but stopped after they spent a day with the Torture and Interrogation Force. Not a single soul was brave enough to try another attempt at physical assault.
“It’s best if you don’t try to speak, that’ll only make you die faster.” Naruto suggests, but not all that concerned, “I’ve already figured out your little plan. Stealing the scroll then framing me for not only stealing it, but killing Iruka when he tried to stop me. Then you would kill me and take off with the scroll, am I right?” Mizuki’s shocked expression was a sign of a confession, “Too bad it didn’t work out like you hoped.”
Iruka was still sitting there in confusion, ‘What’s going on? How could the shuriken suddenly change trajectory?’ Naruto must have done something but the boy didn’t move. No hand signs or anything. So how in the world…?
Naruto yanks out the fūma shuriken, ignoring Mizuki’s cry of anguish, “Relax, you won’t be in pain for very long.” He bent down and started healing the wound. Whether the man made it or not wasn’t his concern but he did want to convey a message before he passed out, “One last thing, you should be careful when playing with a snake…they tend to play with their food before getting bored.” His words had an impact as Mizuki gave another surprised expression before passing out.
“Naruto…” Iruka called his name and got his attention.
Oh, right. Almost forgot about him.
Unlike with Mizuki, Naruto pressed one hand against the wound before slowly taking out the shuriken. He then proceeded to start healing the academy instructor, “You know Iryō Ninjutsu (Medical Ninjutsu) as well?” Iruka was so distracted with everything going on with Mizuki’s betrayal that he didn’t even pay attention to it at first.
“Yeah, Karin’s mom suggested we both learn it since the two of us always get injured during sparring sessions.” Naruto answers. At first it was difficult for him to grasp it given his high chakra reserves, but thanks to his aunt’s patience and guidance he was finally able to use Medical Ninjutsu. It wasn’t hard for Karin as she was able to understand and use it without much issue. Having good chakra control also helped which made her a prodigy when it came to Medical Ninjutsu.
“Still that’s amazing, but why not let anyone in the academy know what you can do?” Iruka questions him, “Why hide yourself?”
Naruto finished healing Iruka’s wound and scoffed, “Cause that would show everyone I’m capable of doing much more. And that leads to unwanted attention.” Attention he doesn’t need. If he were to come out of the shadows and show what he’s really capable of then everyone in the village will take notice. If that happens he can kiss his goal in life goodbye which he refuses to let happen, hence why he hides his skill unless he really needs to show it.
“I see.” Iruka doesn’t push him any further, which he’s honestly surprised about but figures after what happened tonight he has no right to ask anything.
“I’ve secured the scroll.” Iruka jumped at the familiar voice and followed a presence that wasn’t there before. Standing there holding the Scroll of Sealing was Toneri with a serene smile on his face. Where in the world did he come from?
Naruto helped Iruka up, “Good work. The ANBU will be here soon so we can leave the scroll with Iruka.” He says, yawning, “It all worked out and there were no other issues.”
“Here.” Toneri hands Iruka the scroll, “Please go to the hospital and have them inspect your wound once more.” He advised, “While I don’t doubt Naruto’s abilities in healing, you should still have it checked.” The soft spoken boy stands next to the blonde. The two proceed to become a cloud of smoke.
“They were Shadow Clones? That means the real Naruto was never here!” Iruka was impressed by the strategic planning but something else was on his mind. The shadow clone made a comment before vanishing, It all worked out and there were no other issues. His eyes got bigger as he came to realize that Naruto knew about Mizuki’s betrayal the whole time, and planned to deal with the traitor himself! already had a plan in mind but Naruto countered this with his own, and it worked! But then, what about him? Was him coming here accounted for, too? He was probably supposed to die tonight only for Naruto to prevent that.
How strange. He should feel angry being used like a pawn but since Naruto didn’t let him die, that should mean something.
‘Naruto, you saved my life and stopped Mizuki. People may not ever know what you did but I will. Thank you.’ Iruka silently thanks his former student as the ANBU finally appears to inspect the scene.
大筒木
“He really is strange.” Naruto comments in his room, Toneri sitting by the door.
“You mean Iruka Umino?” Toneri inquires.
“I thought he’d question me further about what I can do but opted not to ask anything else. Was he being respectful, do you think?” Naruto asks his friend.
“Yes.” Toneri answers, “Whatever anger he held towards you has slowly diminished before fading away completely. Iruka-san has come to understand something after tonight.”
“Oh, yeah? Like what?” Naruto humors him.
“You prevented his death.” Toneri lists the first thing, “He was supposed to die by Mizuki’s hands and yet this didn’t come to pass. Instead of letting him be killed, you chose to save him.”
“That’s only because I didn’t want to get blamed for it.” Naruto shoots down, “With me taking the blame for everything else that goes on around here, I don’t need anything else they can pin the blame on me for.” Being the village pariah paints a target on your back whether you want it or not. You're the first to be blamed and everything is always your fault. He learns to ignore it as time goes on but that doesn’t mean he’s okay with having to put up with such treatment.
“Naruto, I can tell when you're lying.” Toneri calls his bluff as the blond’s eyebrow twitches, “But the point is, Iruka-san feels gratitude for you saving his life. Even though you don’t trust him or understand his intentions, the fact remains—in his eyes you are his savior.”
“Savior?”
“A normal person would let someone they don’t care for all that much to die.” Toneri reminds him, “You didn’t. Iruka-san will want to gain your trust and if you think I’m lying, why not see for yourself?”
Naruto wanted to call him on his bluff but knew Toneri wasn’t saying anything wrong. Well, since he insists on it, why not see what Iruka’s telling the Hokage.
Hokage’s Residence
Iruka finishes giving his report to the Sandaime Hokage about tonight’s incident. Mizuki was transferred to the same hospital as Iruka but with different rooms. Iruka was discharged after they deemed his leg wound was healed correctly, then asking him who did it before he left. While the traitor Mizuki was transferred to the Torture and Interrogation Force. They deemed him stable enough to be moved after the same healing was performed on him, too. As for the Scroll of Sealing, the ANBU returned it to the Sandaime where it was put back in its original spot.
Hiruzen let out a heavy sigh that reflected his age. When he first gave the hat away he was relieved of having to be the Hokage. It means his duty to his village was finally over. With the death of his successor Hiruzen was forced to take the hat back as he knew there was no other option. So many things were being done behind his back, some he knew but others he did not. Mizuki’s betrayal was certainly something he didn’t see coming. Perhaps if he’d been more attentive then he would have noticed a change, a hint that Mizuki had plans to betray the village. But he failed again. He failed to see the darkness Mizuki held inside his heart for so long. Another one of his failures as the Hokage.
“Mizuki…to think he’s fallen this far.” Hiruzen was disappointed Mizuki would betray the village by handing over the Scroll of Sealing to a third party. His disappointment soon morphed into slight anger when he tried to frame Naruto for the crime.
“Don’t blame yourself for Mizuki’s folly, Hokage-sama.” Iruka says, trying to ease the old man’s guilt, “I didn’t notice his malice towards me, either.” He thought they were friends but after tonight’s bombshell it’s clear he was the only one who believed their friendship was real.
Hiruzen leaned back against his chair, “For now he’s been transferred over to Ibiki and his department. Whoever his accomplice is will be discovered soon.” And knowing Ibiki? He intends to make sure it happens.
“More importantly, you said Naruto was the one to discover Mizuki’s intentions from the start and purposely lured him into a trap?” Hiruzen was having a hard time believing it but knew Iruka would never lie. Shikaku was present when Iruka gave his testimony about what happened and was impressed. Everything was played out strategically and carefully with taking certain factors into account as well. Whether the blond knew Iruka would show up to confirm if he took the scroll or not aside, he still protected the academy instructor instead of letting him die.
That says something.
Shikaku wanted to bring Naruto in but Hiruzen believed it would be best to question the boy tomorrow.
“Yes. Toneri shows up as well but only to secure the scroll.” Iruka repeated his earlier statements, “Hokage-sama, I’ve made mistakes with Naruto during his time at the academy.”
“You mean the “incident?” Hiruzen asks.
“Not just that. From the very first day he knew I disliked him and would either ignore or avoid me whenever he could.” Iruka couldn’t fathom being treated like that by someone, so when the roles reversed and he was on the receiving end? Let’s just say he finally understands what Naruto goes through on a daily basis. He was a fool. They all are. “The Incident” only made things worse and he made a terrible mistake that should never be forgiven. In fact his older brothers made it clear to him that in their eyes he was seen as a parasite.
“And yet, he protected you from Mizuki.” Hiruzen reminded him.
“Yes, he did.” Iruka smiles, feeling grateful, “I…never apologized for my behavior towards him. Do you think he’ll accept?”
Hiruzen thought about it for a moment, “That I do not know.” Naruto’s changed so much that he hardly recognizes him, “However, it is possible. Perhaps your sincere feelings will reach him.”
“I hope for that as well.” Iruka touched his healed leg, “Things won’t be perfect, far from it actually. But…it will be a start to new beginnings.”
Hiruzen smiles, “I agree.”
大筒木
Naruto stopped listening at that point.
He doesn’t know what to think at this point. Iruka was being serious when he talked about apologizing to him. Apologize. Not a single soul in this village has ever apologized to him before, he doubts any of them would even consider it. And yet…
Iruka Umino is the first to do so.
He’s not doing it to seek forgiveness or to make himself feel better. An obligation more like it. The strange part about all of this is that he feels a little lighter somehow.
“You see?” Toneri’s voice drags him from his inner thoughts as his friend smiles.
Naruto rolled his eyes, “Whatever.” He lost this one it seems. Best to let Toneri have this one.
For now.
In the morning both boys reported to the Hokage’s Tower to give their own testimony of the incident. Naruto gave his version of what happened, then Toneri. Hiruzen knew their testimonies would match but it was still required of him to ask. Toneri aside, Naruto was also a victim due to being wrongly accused and then almost killed, so getting his statement was a must. Hiruzen thought about telling him of Mizuki’s interrogation but opted not to. Naruto probably wasn’t all that interested to know, either.
“Thank you for taking the time to come in and give your side. It matches with Iruka’s so that’s all.” Hiruzen says, assuring them he needed nothing else.
“Sure.” Naruto says in a casual tone.
“Thank you for your understanding.” Toneri says more politely, smiling.
Hiruzen wasn’t bothered by Naruto’s casual tone with him. If anything, he was just happy the boy was even giving him that courtesy at all. He took this chance to really look at the small child that was now a grown pre-teen. Naruto’s no longer that small child he used to visit whenever he could. He’s now on his way to becoming a full-fledged shinobi.
Naruto turns his head to the door and Hiruzen sensed someone was there. Slamming the sliding door open was a child around 8-9 years old. The child had short spiky brown hair, blue eyes, and a small chip in his tooth. On his head was a gray helmet with a hole at the top for his hair to stick out of. And finally the boy was wearing gray shorts and a yellow shirt with a red Konoha symbol printed on it.
“Old man, I challenge you!” The boy declared running at Hitizen holding a shuriken, “I’m going to defeat you and become the Fifth Hokage!” He then proceeded to trip over his long blue scarf that was wrapped around his neck.
“…”
“…”
“…”
Naruto looked away from the boy while Toneri was concerned he hurt himself, and Hiruzen tilted his hat down as the boy curled up in a ball as his face hurt, ‘My grandson…a real headache.’
Following behind the boy was a man who appeared to be in his late 20s. He was wearing his forehead protector like a bandanna, wearing sunglasses and a standard shinobi outfit with a flak jacket.
The boy sat up rubbing his face, “Something tripped me.”
Toneri had to keep himself from laughing, ‘What a funny child.’ Did he really not notice he tripped on his own two feet?
‘Kids like him can be a pain to deal with.’ Naruto thinks, not paying the boy any attention.
“Are you okay, Honorable Grandson?” The man asked, frantic and fixing his glasses, “And by the way, there’s nothing here for you to trip on, it's pretty flat.”
The boy didn’t hear him and looked over at Naruto and Toneri. Toneri was smiling at him while Naruto opted to pretend like he wasn’t there. Their presence was also noticed by the shinobi standing at the door.
‘What is the Kyūbi doing here?! He’s the worst kind of troublemaker!’ The man glared at Naruto with the same hate filled eyes as everyone else in the village. A sudden chill went down his spine as he spotted Toneri staring at him even though the boy’s eyes were closed, but he could swear that for a moment he opened them slightly. In that moment he could see blue with a flower pattern but it was gone just that quickly as was the killing intent he felt.
What was that?
“Hey, you're the one who tripped me, aren’t you?!” The boy walked up and pointed an accusatory finger at Naruto, who was still ignoring him.
Naruto acted like he didn’t hear him and asked Toneri a question, “What do you wanna eat for lunch later?”
“Hm? I haven’t thought about it, do you have something in mind?” Toneri was playing along because it seemed like fun.
“Yakitori.”
“I’d love some.”
“Didn’t even hesitate.” Naruto gives him a dry look, “Listen, I’m not gonna be the only one doing all the cooking, you know? You guys gotta take turns once in a while.”
“True, but since you cook the best it only makes sense to have you do it all the time.” Toneri teased.
“Don’t I get a say in this?”
“Unfortunately, no.”
“Tyrant.”
“How mean.”
“HEY, don’t ignore me!” The boy yelled angrily at being ignored. Hiruzen found their bantering quite amusing if the smile on his face was any indication, while the other man was staring at them confused.
Naruto picked the boy up like a cat by the back of his shirt, “So, who are you supposed to be? A stray monkey?” He was only messing with the boy but it was fun, “And by the way, you tripped on your scarf.”
“Hey, you! Take your hands off him right now!” The man yelled at Naruto, “He’s the Honorable Grandson of the Sandaime!”
Naruto gave him a blank look, “So?”
“S-So?!” The man squawked.
“In the end he’s still a kid. If he wants respect from other people then he has to earn it with his own power.” Naruto dropped the boy, “Let’s go.” He said to Toneri.
“Right.” The boy watches them both leave the room in deep thought.
“How dare you, you—!”
“Ebisu, that’s enough!” Hiruzen's sharp tone stopped the man from saying something he was going to regret. The elderly Hokage knows that Naruto has been aware of the Kyūbi for quite some time now, but still…
Ebisu flinched at the sharp tone and composed himself then noticed something, “Ah, the Honorable Grandson is gone!”
Hiruzen has a hunch his grandson went after Naruto. Maybe his grandson can learn some important things from Naruto that he can’t with anyone else.
大筒木
“We seem to have a follower.” Toneri says, sensing the child following them.
“Seriously, I’m not a babysitter.” Naruto says, sighing.
“Really? You don’t seem to mind looking after the young children back home.” Toneri pointed out.
“Yeah, yeah.” Naruto stopped and turned around and had to hold in his laughter when he saw the boy cover himself with a sheet, “Toneri…”
“I see it, too.” Toneri found the child’s antics to be peculiar yet entertaining.
Naruto stepped forward and yanked the sheet off, “You've already been caught, kid. Now why don’t you tell us what you want?” He tells him, tossing the sheet away.
“My names not “kid,” it’s Sarutobi Konohamaru!” Konohamaru says, pointing at Naruto, “Since you saw through my disguise that means you're worthy of being my Master, and me your apprentice!”
Say what now?
“Is he being for real?” Naruto asked Toneri.
“It looks that way. How unexpected.” Toneri was actually confused by the sudden demand.
“Don’t you already have a master? What about four eyes?” Naruto was referring to Ebisu.
Konohamaru huffed, “Ebisu’s not my master, he’s just my tutor. And he doesn’t really teach me anything important.”
“Really? Not even how to control your chakra?” Naruto asked.
Konohamaru shakes his head, “No…”
“But you know what it is, right?” He asked again.
“Chakra is the elemental life energy that is used to perform jutsu.” Konohamaru recites, “The ninja arts combine physical energy from each cell in the body with mystical energy, which is intensified with training and experience. When these two chakras are mixed, special hand signs allow the ninja to focus and combine energy for advanced jutsu.”
“Correct. At least you understand the concept but there’s some things Ebisu left out or didn’t bother to explain.” Naruto decides to add more information, “Chakra can also be controlled and manipulated to do all kinds of things like walking on water, tree climbing, enhanced strength, exhaling fire, creating genjutsu, and anything else. That’s called, “Chakra Control.” It takes a great deal of training to gradually build up, you don’t need to have large chakra reserves, only enough needed to perform an ability.”
“Wow…chakra can do all that?” Konohamaru couldn’t believe it, “Ebisu didn’t mention any of that!”
“Figures. Must be one of those guys only interested in currying favor with the Hokage’s grandson instead of teaching something that’ll keep him alive.” Naruto wasn't surprised at all.
“Why don’t you train him for a little while?” Toneri suggests, “Maybe he can learn more from you than with his instructor.”
Naruto thought about it. Aside from their first encounter the kid really isn’t all that bad once he starts talking. Not to mention his instructor seems more interested in receiving brownie points than actually teaching. The only decent thing he taught the kid was about chakra, but still neglected to explain what else it can do.
‘Besides…’ Naruto sees the eager look on those young eyes, ‘something tells me that even if I tell him “no” he’ll keep pestering me until I agree to train him.’
“Fine, I’ll humor you,” Naruto gave in, “But if I feel you're wasting my time the deal’s off. Got it?”
Konohamaru was all too happy to agree, “You got it, boss!”
“Boss?”
“Yeah, you're stronger than Ebisu and know more than he does, so that makes you boss!” Konohamaru emphasized.
Naruto’s starting to like the kid even more.
大筒木
“No slouching!” Naruto says sternly, whacking the boy upside the head with his scabbard.
“Ow!” Konohamaru whined, rubbing his head, “What was that for?” He complained.
“For slouching,” Naruto repeats, “Before you even think about trying any jutsu the first step is learning chakra control.” Before the kid could even start learning to perform any jutsu he needs to mold his chakra first. Which is why he’s having Konohamaru sit in a lotus pose with a leaf on his forehead. Since the kid insisted on being trained by him he has three rules:
Rule 1: Listen to your master
Rule 2: No complaining
Rule 3: Be respectful
Konohamaru learned first hand that Naruto was vastly different from Ebisu. Sure he explained the same things as the older man did, but he also gave him an example of what he meant. And now he’s letting him try the method for chakra control himself. Getting hit on the head hurts but Konohamaru’s ensuring it because he’s actually learning something.
“Again. No slouching this time.” Naruto tells him.
Taking a deep breath he tries again, this time making sure not to slouch. Toneri was watching them from the log he was sitting on, smiling. Konohamaru was eager to learn from Naruto rather than his own tutor. He listens to Naruto without interruption and shows him respect unlike the shinobi and civilians of the village. His relation to the Hokage aside, he believes the interaction between the two was beneficial.
And he was proven right when he was able to see Konohamaru’s chakra become visible. It worked. This boy truly has potential.
“I…I did it!” Konohamaru had a wide grin on his face, “Boss, did you see?! Did you see?!”
“I saw it. You’ve got some good chakra control, Kono.” Naruto compliments, smiling.
“Kono?” Konohamaru questions the nickname.
“Saying your full name takes too long, so I shortened it.” Naruto shrugs his shoulders.
“Kono…” Konohamaru mumbled.
“I finally found you!” A familiar voice says from above. Looking up they see it’s none other than Ebisu in all his arrogant glory, ‘Hmph, the Kyūbi brat.’
“So the closet pervert arrives.” Naruto says with a knowing smile. Ebisu stiffened in place at being called such a thing.
“What’s a closet pervert?” Konohsmaru asked him.
“It describes a person who seems normal on the surface when in reality they are sexually perverse,” Naruto explains to a stunned Konohanamaru, “hence a closet pervert.”
Konohamaru looks at Ebisu with disgust, “That's disgusting! So is that the kind of person you are, Ebisu?!”
Toneri covered his mouth with his sleeve, “How vulgar.” He sneers.
Ebisu almost falls to the ground, “Utter nonsense! I am no such thing as a lecherous closet pervert!” His face was red with anger.
“Keep telling yourself that and you’ll start believing it.” Naruto says smirking as the jōnin loses his composure.
Refusing to humor him any further, Ebisu ignores him, “So, Honorable Grandson. Time to go home.”
“No way!” Konohamaru refused vehemently, “I’m learning how to be a great ninja so I become Hokage! Now don’t get in my way!”
“A Hokage is more than just a fighter, he must know virtue, honor, wisdom, and he must be skilled at a thousand jutsu,” Ebisu lectures as he approaches them, “You don’t even know one jutsu.”
“That’s because I have to learn chakra control first! Boss said before learning any jutsu you have to first mold your chakra and I was able to do it!” Konohamaru proves this by putting a leaf on his forehead and concentrating, his chakra becoming visible. Ebisu stopped in his tracks, surprised he was able to even do it.
“See? Now leave me alone!” Konohamaru huffs at him, “I want Boss to teach me from now on, he’s better than you anyway!”
“Absurd! Just what can this delinquent teach you that I can’t?” Ebisu scoffed at the idea of Naruto being capable of teaching anything, “Learning anything from him will lead you down the path to ruin!”
‘Talking like I’m not here.’ Naruto was watching how things play out before intervening.
Ebisu grabs the back of Konohamaru’s blue scarf and tries pulling him away, “Honorable Grandson, stop this, right now! Only my training can help you become Hokage!”
“Just leave me alone!” Konohamaru yelled.
A sword scabbard smacks the side of Ebisu’s head hard enough to make the man let go. Naruto stood next to Konohamaru in an instant, “Just what the hell do you think you're doing?” He wasn’t planning on getting involved but things have changed, “I don’t wanna see that again.”
Konohamaru was amazed by how fast Natuto moved. Toneri pulls him away, confusing him, “You should stay close to me for now, okay?”
‘But, why?’ Konohamaru wanted to ask but could sense now wasn’t the time.
Ebisu slowly stands to his feet, “You…I’ll admit you caught me off guard but I’m not impressed. Don’t get conceited just because you took me by surprise. I’m different from Mizuki, yes I know all about it. While I’ll commend you for stopping a potential traitor it changes nothing.”
“Are you done?” Naruto asks him, bored.
“What?” Ebisu felt something and the next thing he knew the blond was behind him. Naruto has his back to him while holding out his sheathed sword then resting it to his side.
“Well, look at that. You are different from Mizuki,” Naruto says bluntly as Ebisu falls forward and loses consciousness, “the difference being you're weaker than him.”
Toneri released an excited Konohamaru who proceeded to barrage Naruto with questions of how he did that. Ebisu fell prey to his own arrogance and should consider himself lucky Naruto showed him mercy. How humiliating it must feel for a jōnin like him to lose against an Academy graduate. Maybe this incident will make him more humble in the near future. But for now? He’ll savor Ebisu’s humiliation.
Before heading home there was one last thing Naruto wanted to make sure Konohamaru understood.
“There are no shortcuts in life. If you're serious about being Hokage then be prepared to train hard till you start bleeding and your body gives out on you. Don’t underestimate hard work.”
With those alerting words they left for home. Whether Naruto was aware of it or not, his words got through to Konohamaru. And the child’s life would change from then on.
大筒木
Naruto told his family that he accidentally took on an apprentice, and it was the Hokage’s grandson of all people. Gesshū, Suigetsu and Karin laughed their asses off, Ryōkan didn’t approve but trusted him to teach someone who was eager to learn, Kimmimaro and Jūgo had faith in his ability to teach the next generation. So, yeah there were mixed reactions but no one voiced their disapproval.
If anything they were more amused by him easily defeating Ebisu, who bragged about his skills as a Tokubetsu Jōnin, only for him to lose against an academy graduate. How humiliating it must be for him to have been defeated by the one person in the village he hates the most. Someone he deemed inferior and incompetent, only for the tables to turn. Perhaps this incident will teach Ebisu some humility.
“By the way, how did your conversation with Iruka go?” Toneri asks with a knowing smile.
Naruto rolled his eyes, “He followed through on his word and apologized before thanking me again. Things aren’t perfect but it’s a start.” He wasn’t going to ignore someone who was sincerely apologetic. Naruto can extend an olive branch since Iruka was willing to do the same.
“I told you.”
“Whatever.”
“But it is a relief that Iruka-sensei is trying his best to understand you.” Hinata contributes to the conversation.
“Yeah, he’s still a little awkward though.” But maybe that’s not a bad thing, either.
For the next few minutes they simply sat there waiting for Iruka to arrive. Various things were going on around them, Shikamaru sleeping, Choji eating, Kiba being loud, Shino being quiet, Karin punching Suigetsu’s head off, Jūgo trying to keep the peace, and Sasuke was brooding. Guess being Rookie of the Year seemed uninteresting even to him. All of that tension was going to get to him if he didn't loosen up. Even now he was being all serious.
SLAM!
“First!” And here comes the two most vocal people when it comes to Sasuke. Sakura and Ino. From being the best of friends to bitter rivals all for the sake of gaining Sasuke’s affection. Talk about sad. And a little entertaining, too.
“Move, I was first, Ino-pig!” Sakura insults, shoving her shoulder.
“You move, Billboard-brow!” Ino shoves back.
Naruto leaned back in his seat, “Should’ve known it wouldn’t stay quiet for long.”
“How unfortunate.” Toneri agrees.
He feels sorry for Sasuke at this moment because currently the two are now trying to claim a spot next to him. Naruto will give Sasuke credit for being able to ignore them so well.
The door opened again as Iruka finally arrived, “All of you take your seats! We’re about to begin!”
Sakura noticed something and raised her hand, “Excuse me, Iruka-sensei? Where’s Mizuki-sensei?”
‘Either still being interrogated or dead.’ Naruto replies in his head.
“Mizuki has been transferred due to a pending investigation regarding him.” Iruka lies smoothly, not outright saying anything about Mizuki’s betrayal, “It isn’t anything for you all to worry about.” His eyes briefly met Naruto’s before focusing back in then, “As of today you are no longer students but Genin of the village. Wear your headbands with pride.”
Wear them with pride, huh?
Naruto has his tied around his sword so that should be good enough.
“All of you will be placed on teams of three and meet your Jōnin instructor soon after.” Iruka started naming the teams, “Team 1…”
Naruto tunes him out since the names he was listing off belong to civilian kids. They won’t last. In fact the ratio of civilians surviving after becoming Genin is low.
“Team 6–Uzumaki Ōtsutsuki Naruto, Hyūga Hinata, and Ōtsutsuki Toneri. Your sensei will be Namiashi Raidō.”
Naruto smiled as he was placed on the same team with people who won’t give him a hard time. Hinata and Toneri were happy with the team arrangement as well. And that name sounds very familiar—Namiashi Raidō
“Team 7–Uchiha Sasuke, Haruno Sakura, and Sai. Your sensei will be Hatake Kakashi.”
“LOVE CONQUERS ALL!” Sakura shouted to the rooftops. Ino sagged her shoulders in defeat. Naruto suspects Sasuke was trying to ease an upcoming headache. Yeah, he wouldn’t wanna be in the same team as Sakura, either. The reason for this is probably because the girl can be too much sometimes. Wait…who is Sai?
As if reading his mind Iruka explains, “Your third teammate will meet up with you soon.”
“Team 8–Inuzuka Kiba, Uzumaki Karin, and Aburame Shino. Your sensei will be Yūhi Kurenai.”
“We got Karin on our team? Oh, hell yeah!” Kiba was just happy Ino’s name wasn’t called. Same for Sakura. The only kunoichi he respects are Hinata and Karin.
Karin smirked, “You better not slow me down, mutt.”
“Same to you!” Kiba responded in kind, grinning.
“It would seem you two forgot about me.” Shino sounded almost hurt.
Karin thumped the side of his head, “Don’t be like that. Besides, it's no fun without you, anyway.” That cheered Shino up quickly. Yeah, she’ll do just fine with those two for teammates.
“Team 9 is already active.”
“Team 10–Nara Shikamaru, Yamanaka Ino, and Akimichi Choji. Your sensei will be Sarutobi Asuma.”
“Troublesome.” Shikamaru wasn’t surprised though. There’s always been a Ino-Shika-Cho team within the village. Gotta keep the tradition going.
“Team 11–Hozuki Suigetsu, Kurama Yakumo, and Jūgo. Your sensei will be Mitarashi Anko.”
“Yeow!” Suigetsu yelped as Karin pulled his ear, “What gives?!”
“You better not cause any problems!” Karin warned him.
“I won’t!” Suigetsu tried prying her finger away but it was a losing battle.
Iruka finished naming the teams and told them they could have a munch break and be back by the designated time. Naruto, Toneri, and Hinata went to the roof for a private discussion.
“Do you know who Namiashi Raidō is, Naruto?” Toneri asks him, eating a rice ball.
“His name sounded a little familiar. If I’m not mistaken I think he was one of the Yondaime Hokage’s bodyguards. He had three back when he was still alive.” Naruto’s come across that name when snooping around on the Hokage’s office and finding records about past Hokage’s, their teams, etc.
“Why would a former bodyguard of the Yondaime want to be our sensei?” Hinata wonders, curious.
Naruto finishes his rice ball, “Probably because the Sandaime told him to. He’s probably trying to see if the two of us will form a bond or something.” He’s gotta give the old man credit for his persistence. But why go so far? He’s not interested in connecting with anyone who knows his dad. What’s his angle here?
“Is this a form of manipulation?” Toneri questions.
“No clue. We’ll just have to see for ourselves when we meet him.” Naruto said.
And meet him they did.
They would soon understand why he was appointed as one of the elite bodyguards of the Yondaime.

Chapter Text
Lunch break ended, and they were back in the classroom. The room buzzed with a mix of anticipation and nervous energy as all teams waited for their Jōnin instructors to arrive. The tension was palpable, with whispered conversations and the occasional nervous glance at the door.
One by one, the Jōnin appeared, each taking their designated teams. When Namiashi Raidō entered, his presence commanded immediate attention. His most distinct feature was the scar that ran across the bridge of his nose and down the left side of his face, giving him a fierce, battle-worn appearance. His brown spiky hair and dark eyes added to the intensity of his look, and he wore the standard Konoha shinobi attire, complete with a forehead protector and flak jacket.
“Team 6, come with me,” he said, his voice leaving no room for hesitation. Without another word, he turned and walked away.
So that’s how it is, huh? Naruto thought, exchanging a quick glance with Toneri and Hinata before leading the way. This arrangement hadn’t changed since they were young—Naruto at the front, with Toneri and Hinata flanking him.
They followed the trail left by their sensei, winding through the corridors until they arrived on the roof. Raidō was already there, waiting with an air of mild surprise, if not impressed.
“You got here on time. Sit,” he instructed, gesturing to the spots in front of him.
They obeyed, with Naruto in the middle, Toneri to his right, and Hinata to his left.
“All right, let’s get started,” Raidō said, his tone curt and professional. “Starting today, I’ll be your Jōnin instructor. But before we do anything else, introduce yourselves.”
Introduce ourselves? Naruto thought, glancing at his teammates. Well, introductions are a good way to break the ice.
“Why don’t you go first, Raidō-sensei,” Hinata suggested.
Raidō raised a brow at this but complied, “Very well, my name is Namiashi Raidō, my specialty in the field is confidential,” he finished. Short, simple, and straight to the point. Just what you would expect from an experienced shinobi, “Next,” he looks at Hinata.
“My name is Hyūga Hinata,” Hinata smiled, “I’m very fond of making medicine and flower pressing.” She then turned to Toneri.
“I’m Ōtsutsuki Toneri,” he said politely, “My favorite pastime is watching the moon.” Naruto was the last one to go.
“Uzumaki Ōtsutsuki Naruto,” Naruto introduced himself casually, “I spend my days training and relaxing.” Each of them gave their introductions, providing only the bare minimum of what was needed. They live in a world where knowing even one of your secrets could be dangerous. It’s best to only reveal what’s on the surface rather than letting others dig deeper. In the end, what keeps you alive are the secrets kept hidden behind a veil of deceit.
Their new sensei seemed impressed by their short and simple introductions. So far, they made a good impression on him.
Raidō nodded in approval, “Good introductions,” he praised, “Remember, in our line of work, revealing even the smallest detail can get you killed.” It’s a crucial lesson that most academy graduates don’t realize until later in their ninja careers—if they live that. A grim reminder that death can come at any time and that being a ninja isn’t all glamorous.
“Now before we officially become a team, you three will take the real Genin Exams,” Raidō revealed. Instead of confusion, this seemed to intrigue the three Genin, “I’ll explain what I mean. The purpose of this is to see just how much you’ve really learned in the academy, as well as to determine your level of skills,” he explained, “If I see that you aren’t up to par, then you’ll be sent back to the academy for further training.”
Naruto had a feeling there was more to it than just graduating from the academy. Passing the exam was one thing, but the real challenge was to see how much the graduates had actually learned, and not just that but their skill level too. Most of the new graduates came from major clans, while the rest were civilians. In other words, this is a test to see who among the two groups had what it takes to become a shinobi.
“Tomorrow morning report early at the Intelligence Division for your test,” his eyes narrowed, “And don’t be late.” He vanished in a swirl of leaves. Well, he sure takes his job seriously.
Naruto likes him already.
大筒木
They arrived early in the morning, right on schedule, with their sensei already there. The building they stood in front of was the Konohagakure Intelligence Division. Naruto spied on this place many times in the past, curious to know what went on inside. He was eager to see what their sensei had planned for them here. As they were led inside the building, an anguished scream assaulted their eardrums. Naruto blinked at the sudden sound but relaxed. Looking over at his teammates, he saw the two weren’t all that bothered either.
Raidō led them inside a room where a tall, imposing man stood. “Right on time,” he smirked, “Not bad for a couple of Genin.” He actually means that.
“They aren’t considered Genin yet,” Raidō reminded. “What’s the situation?” Straight to business with no interest in small talk.
The atmosphere changed with a flip of a switch. “Still the same. The escaped detainee hadn’t moved from his hiding spot in the forest,” he smirked. “Moron thinks he’s safe.”
Detainee? Someone managed to escape this place with so many skilled shinobi here? Naruto eyed the opposing man, his whole body language revealing nothing as he tried to get a read on him. Although he had a feeling trying to read this guy’s body language would be a waste of time, he couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off about all this.
“I see. In that case,” Raidō turned to them, “this will be your test: bring back the escaped detainee.” He paused, staring them down. “And if he resists…respond accordingly.” Meaning if the target resisted capture, they were authorized to use force—excessive force, to be exact.
“Yes, Raidō-sensei!”
Before sending them off he handed them a map. “He’s hiding around the area that’s been circled. Be on your guard and don’t hesitate.” This was sound advice for fresh academy graduates who were still green. All three quickly left to start the test, memorizing the map and heading in the direction where the target was last seen.
“Hinata, can you see the target?” Naruto asked.
Hinata smiled before activating her Byakugan. She quickly spotted the target and signaled the other two to stop. “He’s here just as they said, but the target seems calm.”
“Calm?” Toneri found that curious. Why appear calm when you're still in enemy territory and forced to hide to prevent being recaptured? Is it confidence? Or is there more to this test than they were told?
“Yes, he’s standing there smiling and appears to be relaxed,” Hinata reported, “Not the reaction you would expect from an escaped detainee.” No, it’s not. The guy should feel panicked yet he’s calm and composed? Almost as if…
Naruto smiles in understanding. “I get it now,” he said, getting their attention.
“Did you figure something out?” Toneri asked.
“Yep, turns out we were fed somewhat false information,” Naruto said, excited. “This just got more interesting.” He didn’t know what to expect from their true test, but so far he’s impressed. “I’m thinking that the so-called ‘escaped detainee’ didn’t actually escape at all.” The undertone in his words were clear: The target didn’t escape—he was purposefully allowed to.
Hinata understood. “They let him leave.”
“But there’s more to it than that.” Toneri guessed.
“And there is,” Naruto started to explain. “When you think about it like this, there’s no way anyone would be able to escape successfully, especially since the person in charge is that guy.”
“By ‘that guy’ are you referring to the tall man with the bandanna on his head and the scar?” Toneri was talking about the person who explained what happened to their sensei.
“Morino Ibiki—Head of the Konoha Torture and Interrogation Force,” Naruto revealed. “No one can just escape the Intelligence Division building. It's impossible for any criminal to escape, not with him skulking around the place as if he were the incarnation of the grim reaper.” And he’s been called that by many of his colleagues, “So the only explanation is…” He trailed off.
“Ibiki-san letting the target leave but with certain conditions attached,” Hinata finished.
And that condition had something to do with them, which explains why the suspect was acting so confident.
“And that condition involves us, that’s true.” Naruto was sure about that, “But like Toneri pointed out earlier, there’s more to it than that. Here’s what I think went down before we arrived: First,” Naruto put up one finger, “our sensei came to Ibiki and proposed using a random suspect to test us.” He put a second finger. “Two, said suspect was told he could leave without any consequence if he was able to defeat fresh-out-of-the-academy Genin.” He held up a third finger. “And finally, the third important part: if he manages to defeat the three Genin sent after him, his freedom is guaranteed, meaning he’s free to leave the village and no one will chase after him.” Naruto could see Hinata and Toneri were agreeing with his theory since it makes the most sense. And why wouldn’t it? To anyone looking for a way to escape punishment for their crimes, the best option would be to make a deal with the warden, and make a promise on it so there will be no more strings attached.
“That makes sense, but is the target really just some random criminal?” Toneri questioned. “It seems to me he wasn’t chosen at random.”
“That’s a good question,” Naruto praised his friend. “And you’d be right. He’s not a random criminal, but a spy.” It would explain why the guy would be feeling confident and sure of himself. They don’t know which village he’s from but no doubt he’s a shinobi, either Chūnin or Jōnin level.
Toneri was thinking, “Having us track and take down a spy and bring him back seems a bit much, doesn’t it?” Not that he saw this as a bad thing. Far from it, really. Since this is to test them and determine if they truly deserve to be Genin, then failing isn’t an option.
“Perhaps, but in the end this is our assigned task so we have to complete it.” Hinata reminded him. “And remember, we were told to retrieve him by any means necessary.” Reading between the lines was obvious: either incapacitate or kill. Simple really.
“We should try to avoid killing him if possible,” Naruto suggested, “Instead, why don’t we take advantage of that overconfidence?”
Isamu prides himself on being the best spy for his village. With his ordinary appearance and unremarkable personality, no one would ever suspect him of being a spy. Or at least, that’s how it usually goes.
For some reason, Konoha discovered his identity the second he set foot through their village gates! They knew everything—his aliases, patterns, even the village he served! Everytime he was sent to spy on other villages, he would dress in civilian clothing. Combined with his boring face and average personality, no one suspected a thing. And yet somehow, this village full of tree huggers found out about him, and before he could do anything, his hands were cuffed. Then he was dragged off to their interrogation facility just like that!
Dammit!
Did he get careless in the last village he infiltrated and they alerted the other hidden villages of his identity? No—there’s no way he screwed up! His fake identity was always destroyed after the mission was complete. He even took special precaution to erase everything else related to his fake aliases. Except killing. Doing that would only leave a trail which would defeat the whole purpose of his occupation as a spy.
Once he figures out who tipped off to these tree huggers, he’ll make them pay! But first things first…dealing with snot nosed Genin.
“You’ll seriously let me go if I just knock these brats around a little bit?” Isamu was skeptical, and rightly so. All of this seemed too good to be true for it to not be a trap. He was let out of his cell and given three pictures to look at. The terms were simple: defeat the three Genin shown to you and you’ll be pardoned just like that. Sounds simple, if not sketchy.
Ibiki smirked, “That’s right. It should be easy for you since they recently graduated from the academy,” his smirked widened, “making them easy prey.”
Isamu still looked at him with skepticism but otherwise accepted the terms. Like he had a choice.
Oh, well.
At least he’ll have some fun toying with three brats before putting them out of their misery.
He smirked, imagining the look of helplessness on those Genin’s faces after he’s done with them. It almost made him feel sorry for—
Hm?
‘They're here! And not too far away.’ He heard voices nearby and went to inspect. Standing there with their backs turned to him and guards lowered were, in fact, them, ‘These stupid brats haven’t even noticed me yet. What a rookie mistake. I almost feel bad having to kill them, but life’s unfair.’ With three kunai in hand, he threw them at the unsuspecting Genin. He was surprised when the two boys blocked them and protected the female one from harm. She must be the weak link, he thought. Way to make it obvious. Using his superior speed to easily get past the two, he got behind the girl.
“Don’t make any sudden moves,” he threatened, pointing a kunai at the girl’s throat. “You wouldn’t want your teammate to get killed, would you?” The girl wasn’t even trying to resist either. Good. They learn fast. He’s the one in charge, and they have no choice but to obey. “Now, why don’t you two be good little Genin and drop all your weapons. Do that, and I’ll let her go.” That’s a lie. His plan is to kill all of them and escape once they get rid of their ninja tools.
Instead of complying with his demand, the two brats stare at him, then at each other. They had matching smirks. What the hell?
“I thought he’d be a little cautious, but it turns out we were right.”
“Overconfidence can make you stupid.”
Huh? What the hell does that mean—“Ow!” he yelped, feeling something sting his hand, forcing him to let go of the girl. The kunai fell to the ground as he held his hand.
‘Dammit, that stings! What the hell got me? A bee?!’ Looking at the wound, it was tiny but it hurts like hell! His eyes went over to the girl and saw she was smiling. “What are you smiling about—!” His words cut off as he suddenly felt his heart beating faster than normal. Then he felt his arm go numb, then his other, then both his legs, and he fell to the ground. His whole body went numb as he couldn’t move a finger.
‘Shit, it was a trap!’ And he fell for it like an idiot! That lying bastard! He should’ve known it was too good to be true. A classic ‘cheese in the trap’ scenario and he fell for it hook, line, and sinker.
Damn it all!
With their target captured and secured, the three headed back to send a report to their sensei. Ibiki was impressed they managed to capture the inmate so quickly. Not bad.
Ibiki had to admit he was impressed and told them so. He may be a harsh man, but he knows how to compliment others. These Genin completed their mission without any hiccups, so yeah, he’ll admit they did good.
Raidō was not only impressed but relieved. Secretly, he was wondering if maybe having them go after a spy was too much for them. But it seems there was no reason for him to worry.
“As of today, you are officially Team 6,” Raidō tells them. “Report early tomorrow morning to start doing missions.”
“Yes, sir!”
“Dismissed.” Raidō watched them leave the building, then addressed Ibiki, “The skill level of the spy was mid Chunin. They waited for him to show himself, let him think he had control, then quickly turned the tables before he could react.” Instead of rushing at the enemy like most Genin would, they actually used their brains. He only knows their skill level through academy records, but who is to say what their actual skill level is outside of the academy.
“Not bad for greenhorns,” Ibiki complimented. “Those Genin of yours will go far. Watch them closely.”
“I’m starting to see that,” Raidō said.
“Ibiki-san!” A chunin ran towards them, looking nervous.
“What is it?” Ibiki asked calmly.
The man stopped to catch his breath. “That spy…the spy’s paralysis had worn off and we were about to escort him back to his cell when…when…” he started hesitating.
Ibiki wasn’t impressed by his nervousness, “Just say it already.”
“He stopped breathing,” the Chunin reported. “He's dead, sir.”
The silence that followed after his report was felt throughout the whole building. A paralyzing poison that numbs not just the muscles, but also the organs as well, only wearing off when the victim takes their last breath.
What terrifying brats Raidō was assigned to.
大筒木
The Hokage Tower was packed with Jōnin that were assigned their own Genin team. Aside from teams 1-5, all the others passed without much issue—with Raidō’s team finishing their test the fastest. This impressed Hiruzen and his fellow Jōnin. Raidō felt conflicted, though. He wants to share his feelings with the Hokage but decided against it. So the next best thing would be to discuss things with the other Jōnin.
He’s now starting to regret that decision.
“What the hell?” Asuma was the first to comment after Raidō told them everything about his Genin test.
Kurenai's reaction wasn’t much better. “You let them go after a spy?” she questioned his decision. “What were you thinking?”
And Kakashi?
“Well, at least they didn’t get killed,” he said, reading his orange book. “That means those three know how to handle themselves.”
Not very helpful, but he has a point. Good thing Gai’s not here right now and out on a mission with his team. The last thing he wants to hear is how ‘youthful’ Team 6 is, and all that other nonsense.
“I wasn’t given much Information about their skills outside of the academy,” Raidō admitted, “so I wasn’t sure what to expect.” It certainly wasn’t them getting their first kill.
“That’s fair,” Asuma lit a cigarette, “what was Ibiki’s reaction?” He didn’t bother hiding his obvious curiosity.
What was his reaction?
If his smile is anything to go by, then he was satisfied.
“He was elated.” That was the best way to describe it. “So elated, in fact, he was ranting about wanting them to spend time at the Intelligence Division.”
“Absolutely not,” Kurenai rejected the idea.
“It’s not really your decision, Kurenai,” Asuma said, “but I’m not exactly comfortable with the idea, either.”
Kakashi didn’t say anything, too busy being lost in his thoughts. Truth be told, he was surprised his deceased sensei’s son was placed in Team 6. The squad was known for guarding and infiltration. It’s strange the Hokage would place Naruto in such a team, not including Hinata and that other boy, Toneri.
Just what is he thinking?
“Oh, it’s Kimimaro-kun.” Kurenai noticed the teen walking past their table through the window.
Asuma saw him. “Talk about a sight for sore eyes. He’s been sent out on so many missions we rarely see him around the village.” Since he got out of the ANBU, the young prodigy has been making waves.
Which is true. It seems nowadays every high-ranking mission would specifically asks that Kimimaro be placed on the recommended team. Naturally, this has some other Jōnin feeling jealous, while the rest were happy for the kid. But there’s also the minority that find Kimimaro to be off-putting. Some even compare him to how Kakashi used to be back in his ANBU days. Ironically, the only person Kimimaro seems to be comfortable with is Gai. Talk about an ironic twist of fate. Gai must have felt Kimimaro was too withdrawn and offered to have a spar as a way of loosening him up.
That friendly spar ended in a draw.
No one could believe it.
Gai’s known as a taijutsu master, and for someone to tie with him in a sparring match is unheard of. Then again, Kimimaro’s fighting style is unorthodox in comparison to Gai’s. But of course, the older man was a good sport about the tie, and in typical Gai fashion, offered to spar again when they had the time.
Kimimaro still didn’t open up to anyone outside of his family. Gai may be a good sparring partner, but that doesn’t mean he treats the older man as a friend.
Kakashi closed his book. “It isn’t really all that surprising. Kimimaro’s skills are valued highly by not just the Hokage, but even the Daimyō.” He recalled the man singing praises about Kimimaro and asked if was considering joining the Twelve Shinobi Guard.
Asuma smirked, “So even the old fox himself has his eye on him, huh? Can’t say I’m surprised.”
Kurenai watched him walk out of sight. “I’ve never seen him show any sort of emotion in all the time he’s been here.”
Raidō knew why. “Not around us. But he does with his family, and…him.” He was referring to a certain someone that should not be named.
The mood became more serious as a result.
Most of them remember the aftermath of the bloodbath that was the infamous Uchiha Massacre. To be killed by one of their own was a hard pill to swallow, but it was a fact that cannot be changed. The aftermath wasn’t pretty either, as the investigation put certain people connected to the criminal under scrutiny. And they weren’t talking about Sasuke, but the person considered his best friend.
Kimimaro.
All eyes were on him, despite Kimimaro knowing nothing of his former friend's plans. But that didn't stop people from coming up with theories of their own. Even some Jōnin believed he actually participated in the massacre and was just pretending to be innocent to avoid suspicion. This made Kimimaro’s life in the village a little harder, as he was looked at with suspicion. His every move was being watched, even on missions where he was assigned on a team. His teammates would isolate him and not say anything about the mission details, only telling him to do his part. It was if they were expecting him to show his true colors like his friend and kill them all.
And yet, in spite of the suspicion thrown his way, Kimimaro didn’t seem phased by any of it.
Raidō felt for him. Kimimaro shouldn’t be treated as a criminal when the real one was out there somewhere, wandering anywhere around the world.
Only time will tell when he’ll return.
大筒木
Doing the standard D-rank missions was part of being a Genin team. But the one thing Raidō should have taken into account was the interaction between his team and the villagers.
In short, it wasn’t good.
D-rank missions involve doing chores, and while his team didn’t complain, the villagers' open scorn of Naruto was a problem. To the blonde’s credit, he ignored it in favor of focusing on the mission. Naturally, him ignoring their presence angered them, and this, in turn, set off Hinata and Toneri. With the most innocent smile he’d ever seen on Hinata’s face, she went into detail about different poisons that could leave a person catatonic, and…other things. Toneri would stare the villager client down which made them back down.
He himself had to intervene when the client almost said something he shouldn’t. How does Naruto handle this with a face full of boredom? Raidō saw Naruto in a whole different light. In the face of hatred, he still moves on with his head held high. It takes a lot of willpower to do that. They continued doing the standard D-rank missions, one of which involved capturing that hellcat Tora. Normally, it would have taken hours to catch it, but Naruto made it easy. Raidō was astounded when the blond knelt down and held his hand out to the little beast. Tora glared briefly but slowly approached the outstretched hand and sniffed it. The female then licked Naruto’s hand then rolled over on her back.
For the second time today, Raidō was once again astounded. Never in his life would he ever think to do that.
After constant D-rank missions, it was decided his Genin were ready for their very first C-rank mission. And the Hokage agreed.
“I must say I’m very impressed, Raidō,” Hiruzen said, “Your team has completed quite the number of D-rank missions.” He complimented. Not even Team Gai has done this many D-rank missions.
“Thank you, Hokage-sama.”
Hiruzen observes Team 6 carefully. “This mission is of great importance, so I’m counting on your team to ensure it goes successfully.” It was moments such as this that he shed his grandfatherly persona in favor of the old shinobi that once dominated the battlefield.
Team 6 were interested to hear the details of the mission.
“Your mission will be to escort the Daimyō and his family.”

Summary:
Team 6 gets ready for the mission.
Chapter Text
Did they hear him right?
He wants their team to escort the Fire Daimyō and his family? A mission like this should be given to a Jōnin—not a team of Genin. And to only give the mission C-rank? What the hell is this old man thinking?
Naruto was convinced the old man’s finally lost his mind. Or playing a sick prank on them. It could honestly be both.
“Pardon me, Sandaime-sama, but did you just say…” Raidō trailed off. Even he couldn’t believe this crazy old monkey just told them to escort the Fire Daimyō of all people!
“You heard my words correctly,” Hiruzen assured Raidō, “He and his family need a group of capable shinobi to escort them safely from the Land of Iron back to the Land of Fire.”
The Land of Iron. Naruto is familiar with that name. It was an icy, snow-covered country located among three mountains called the Three Wolves. Unlike other countries of the world whose military utilized shinobi, the Land of Iron’s military was made up of samurai. As one would expect, this difference in ideologies caused problems in the past, but because the Land of Iron’s samurai were formidable, there was an agreement among shinobi not to interfere in their affairs.
This understanding has held even to this day.
And the Land of Iron has little involvement with the shinobi world, acting as neutral territory instead. This means that if one or more villages have a problem with the other and intend on inciting a war, the Land of Iron would be used as neutral ground for negotiations.
Naruto knows this from his own personal investigation. Plus, it’s the land where his katana originated, so it’s only fitting he understands the land in which it hailed from.
“Not a bad place to go for a nice little family vacation,” Naruto commented, “political discussions included.” It sounded like he was making an off-handed comment, but Hiruzen and Raidō knew that wasn’t the case.
Hiruzen wanted to question how he would know of such a thing but refrained. He had accepted long ago that Naruto knows more than he lets others believe and decided to leave it be, “The Fire Daimyō has four capable guards to protect him, but he’s requesting additional aid for his family.”
‘Four capable guards but still needing extra protection for his family?’ Naruto thought that was odd. Why not use some of his own guards to protect his family? It’s not like he doesn’t have plenty of other palace guards who could fulfill that role. Which begs the question as to why he would need their aid instead of relying on his own loyal men? There can only be one reason: a spy. Someone planted a spy within the Fire Daimyō’s territory, and that’s why he was requesting the aid of a shinobi. ‘That explains why he reached out to Konoha. He must’ve suspected a spy was planted from within his territory.’ This mission is going to be a pain in the ass.
“You will rendezvous with the Fire Daimyō in the Land of Iron early tomorrow morning.” Hiruzen looked Raidō right in the eye. “And remember, this mission cannot fail.”
“I understand Hokage-sama.” Raidō bowed.
Hiruzen’s gaze fell on the Genin, “Dismissed.”
Good grief.
Escorting the Fire Daimyō from the Land of Iron back to the Land of Fire, with the possibility of this mission being more than it seems. No pressure, right?
Hyūga Clan Manor
Within the Hyūga clan manor, two Branch members were having a conversation. The women walked down the hall as they were talking before spotting Hinata.
“Good evening, you two,” Hinata greeted them, smiling.
“G-Good evening, Hinata-sama!” The two women greeted back, stammering. They bowed as she walked past them. When they were absolutely sure she was gone, one of the women spoke.
“Ah, my heart is pounding so loudly!” One girl sighed, placing a hand over her chest. “I can never tell what she’s thinking with that smile on her face.”
“I feel the same.”
“Is it true what they say?” she asked. “Did she really poison the Hyūga Elders?” None of them died, of course. But the rumor going around the manor was that she poisoned them because the Elders pushed her too far, and she wanted to get back at them.
Her fellow Branch member closed her eyes, “Yes, it’s true. But not for the reason the rumors are saying,” She corrected her family member.
“Eh? Then why?”
The poisoning of the Hyūga Elders was spread throughout the clan. None believed it at first. How could they? Hinata was known for being shy and far too kind to be called a Hyūga worthy of the name. And the Elders reminded her of this many times, as did some members of the main house. Only those of the Branch family were sympathetic towards her, as she showed them kindness many times. The only person who hated her outright was Neji. She accepted his anger and hatred even though it saddened her. That’s why no one believed it when rumors went around she intentionally poisoned the Hyūga Elders. Most dismissed it as pointless gossip.
Except they were wrong.
It was true.
Hiashi-sama himself bore witness to what happened and even refused to speak about it. So the question remains as to how the rumor spread. A Branch member overheard the two elders talking about it, their voices filled with fear and uncertainty. The Branch member then told the rest, and that’s how it started. Who would have guessed that the former, timid heiress transformed into someone who even the Hyūga Elders fear! Since then, there’s been a change. The main house would treat them with more respect and give them equal credit on missions, even let them voice their opinions during clan meetings. All of the Branch members credit this sudden shift to Hinata-sama. She may have forfeited her position as heiress to the clan, but everyone in the branch family still view her as heiress of the Hyūga clan.
“So she poisoned the elders for our sake?” The woman couldn’t believe it.
“It sounds unbelievable but it’s true. Because of Hinata-sama, things have become a little better.”
Hopefully, it will continue to stay that way.
Hinata walked leisurely through the compound. She was greeted by the Branch members as the main house avoided her gaze. How ironic that they would fear someone who was considered a failure in the eyes of the Clan head and the elders. What confused them was her relinquishing the title of clan heiress and passing it down to her younger sister. With her improvement in Jūken and other skills, she could easily hold her own against Hiashi. Yet she announced the one to succeed Hiashi would be Hanabi, not herself. No one could understand why she would do such a thing.
They aren’t saying Hanabi wouldn’t make a great clan head, but Hinata taking over the position would put the Branch house more at ease.
Well…all except one.
“You appear to be in a good mood.” Speak of the devil himself. Standing there and blocking her path is Hyūga Neji, cousin to both sisters and notoriously known for hating Hinata personally. Known for being a Hyūga prodigy, but it seems that’s only for the Branch house and not the clan as a whole. Hinata has now taken that spot, which unfortunately intensified his hatred for her. He was one of many that didn’t believe the rumor, even after Hiashi himself confirmed it to be true. Neji refused to accept it as the truth. A failure cannot change because that is what fate has decided.
Such a sad mindset.
“Do I?” Hinata questioned. “You always have such an angry expression on your face, Neji-nii-san.” She tilted her head slightly, both index fingers touching her cheeks, “Perhaps if you smiled more often instead of scowling, that handsome face of yours would be more appealing,” she teased, lightheartedly.
Neji scoffed. “And play the naive fool like you?” he sneered. “Not likely.”
“That’s too bad. But then again, your calm disposition, along with that cynical personality could be considered attractive,” Hinata said, walking past him. “Also, you should be more mindful of your words. It’s never good to hurt people’s feelings.”
This “helpful” advice only served to anger Neji, “Hurt people’s feelings?” The audacity. “Are you referring to yourself or that useless blond—”
A heavy pressure was felt at that moment. The sheer force threatened to crush him. Neji has never felt such a concentrated murderous aura before, especially not from Hinata! His instincts were telling him not to turn around, and he listened.
“Like I said,” he could feel her breath against his ear, “be more careful with your words. Most people would not take kindly to being insulted, that’s why I said to be mindful.” Neji quickly turned around and saw she was no longer there.
‘What was that?’
大筒木
“Here.” Toneri handed Naruto some green tea. It seems the contents of the mission request was still bothering him, so he used his dōjutsu to uncover the truth. And judging by his facial expression, it seemed this mission will indeed be a hassle.
Naruto took a sip of his tea. “Seriously, just what the hell is that old man thinking? Giving us a mission like this.” What’s pissing him off is the reason they were recommended for this mission. “Doesn’t he realize that if we fail this mission, we’re the ones who’ll get the full brunt of the consequences? We’ll be forever known as the team of Genin who failed to protect the Fire Daimyō.” The old man will get some flak too, but the blame would fall on them for failing the mission.
“Not a very flattering thing to be known for,” Toneri said.
“Right?” Naruto leaned back against the wall. “Anything can go wrong with a mission like this. Which means we need to take this seriously.” And won’t that be fun?
“It seems that way.” Toneri has no objections. “Hinata must be getting things prepared already.”
They could see it now: Hinata in her room, smiling as she got everything ready for the mission. She’s the most unconventional member of her clan as part of the main branch. The elders' stress levels must be higher than their egotism.
“We can prepare all we want, but it won’t mean anything unless more information is provided. And I have my doubts our ‘clients’ will just tell us out of the kindness of their hearts.” Naruto doesn’t trust nobles and for good reason. They can afford to use people as pawns without consequence and don't have to worry about repercussions. But if a person belongs to a clan, then they at least have a backing.
“It would be ideal to ask someone who works within the Fire Daimyō’s inner palace, but…” Toneri trailed off, knowing that would be impossible.
Naruto could always spy on them again with his Senrigan, but if he’s right about the spy theory, then they won’t talk about it openly. And he can’t read minds so…
“Welcome back,” he suddenly greeted a new presence. From behind the tatami door, a tall figure knelt. “Report, Kuroki.”
“Yes.” Kuroki responds, affirmatively.
Kimimaro returned to the compound and was greeted by Toneri, “I’ve returned,” he announced.
“Welcome back, Kimimaro-san,” Toneri returns the greeting. “Naruto wants to see you.”
“I see.” Kimimaro didn’t question why and went straight to Naruto’s room. His little brother was waiting for him when he opened the door. “You have a troubled expression.”
“It’s because of the mission the Hokage assigned us,” Naruto told him.
Kimimaro is known for his stoic expression, which he made sure never had any cracks, but it’s a different story when the Hokage is mentioned. The animosity he holds for the old man could put the villagers' hatred of him to shame.
But that’s to be expected. The old man hasn’t made the best decisions after taking the hat again. Most of that is due to him being too sentimental, which affected his judgement. He made rational decisions befitting the title of Hokage, but other than that…
“What ludacris mission has that old fool given you?” Kimimaro questioned.
Animosity is defined as a strong feeling of hatred or ill will, which becomes animosity.
Such a fitting description.
The next morning, their team gathered at the front gates. Raidō-sensei speaks with the two guarding the entrance before turning to them.
“Let’s go.”
With those simple words, the mission has started.

Chapter Text
The cold wind, falling snow, and the clinking of armor.
The Land of Iron.
Also known as the Land of Samurai.
They were here waiting for their client to arrive at the meeting spot. The cloaks covering them from the cold had hoods attached, so it covered their faces. But that doesn’t stop the eyes watching them closely. Naruto senses no hostility, so at the very least their presence here wasn’t unwelcome—a good thing for them. Here in this land, an outsider could be easily spotted simply because samurai don’t recognize their faces. Even if they dressed as normal civilians, they would still stand out.
Naruto was discreetly checking the area with his Senrigan to scan for any hidden enemies. It was all clear for now, but he doesn’t expect that to last for long. He doubted any assassins were foolish enough to attack in the land of samurai, so the most likely action they’d take would be to ambush them once they left.
‘A common tactic used to take a target by surprise. I know for a fact the Fire Daimyō is expecting one.’ Naruto has to give the man credit for being smart about this. Rumors about him being fickle and indecisive were well-known. There were other things said about him from a few select shinobi who had been hired by him in the past. Having someone with qualities like that would inevitably cause problems. It was a wonder nothing had happened so far. ‘Putting a man entertained by his own amusement and treating everything like a game is dangerous.’ Anyone could take advantage of that, case in point a certain War-Hawk.
Hinata placed a hand on his shoulder, “They’re here.” She whispered.
Here we go.
“Greetings, I am Kiyomizu, Advisor of the Fire Daimyō.” Kiyomizu was about the same height as Raidō, sporting a long hat and a black robe with the ‘fire’ symbol engraved in the middle of the black hat. In terms of looks, he appeared to be of middle-age which isn’t all that surprising when you think about how long the advisors have served the Fire Daimyō. Kiyomizu was the prime example of a proud noble with his poised posture and the usual aura of arrogance.
“Nice to meet you. My name is Namiashi Raidō,” he returned the greeting. “And this is my team.” Naruto saw Kiyomizu’s expression change. There it was, that familiar look someone of high standing gets when gazing at someone they deem as below them. A funny sight when you consider it was them who asked for additional aid. Naruto knew where this was going.
“Ah, yes. Your team,” Kiyomizu emphasized with displeasure. “I was under the impression your village would be sending more…experienced ninja, and not mere children.”
‘Well, he certainly didn’t waste any time insulting us,’ Naruto thought, seeing their sensei frown at the man’s rudeness. He had to hand it to him for keeping his composure and staying professional.
“I understand you have doubts, but my team is more than capable of handling themselves and will protect the Fire Daimyō without fail,” Raidō said stoically. Kiyomizu, of course, doesn't seem all that convinced.
“Let us hope so, for their sake.” Having had the final word, he walked away. Naruto watched him approach one of the palanquins and speak to someone inside. Must be the Fire Daimyō. His family is probably in the other one.
“He doesn’t seem to have a very high opinion of us, does he?” Toneri stated the obvious.
“What gave it away?” Naruto replied sarcastically.
“The Fire Daimyō’s advisors are from prestigious noble families that have served the ruler for centuries,” Hinata explained to give them a better understanding. “Distasteful as their attitudes may be, they can’t help it as such things were instilled in them since childhood. Like the Uchiha and Hyūga clan.”
“In other words, they can’t help being arrogant nobles because it’s the only thing they know,” Naruto summarized.
“Yes,” Hinata said.
Naruto snorted. “What a convenient excuse to justify themselves,” he said snidely.
“It does sound very unpleasant. But just as they choose to look down on others, the same can be said of the opposite,” Toneri added his own insight.
“That’s exactly right,” Raidō spoke. “No matter what the future may hold, don't ever change who you are. Understand? Stay true to yourselves.” He had been a shinobi long enough to see the consequences of arrogance. All it does is bring a person to utter ruin, blinding them to their poor decisions and other factors that led them down the path of no return. A sad fate, but an inevitable one.
‘These kids have the potential to become something great. I don’t want to see it happen to them. ’
Unfortunately, the treatment they received from the Fire Daimyō’s people hadn't improved. Even his personal guard turned their noses up at them. The most vocal of them was the leader, and the target of his doubt fell upon Naruto. The reason was simple, almost ridiculous. Naruto got a good look at the man, like a really good look. His attire consisted of black pants, a matching shirt with long sleeves. Short black hair, cold green eyes, his sword strapped to his back. Unlike them he was wearing a black cloak that hid the blade.
The moment he spotted Naruto’s sword, he questioned his ability to wield it.
“That blade, do you know how to use it?” the man questioned, voice dripping with sarcasm. If he was trying to get a rise out of the blond by questioning if he knew how to use a sword, then he should try taking a page out of the villagers’ book.
Naruto kept eye contact as their surroundings grew silent. No one was trying to intervene or scold him for his behavior. Not that he was expecting them to do anything. And there’s no need to get worked up over this, either.
“Who knows?” Naruto shrugged, walking away to get into formation and ending the conversation. The tense silence evaporated with his nonchalant response and lack of reaction to the obvious provocation. Raidō smirked, proud of Naruto for keeping his cool. Hinata found the whole interaction amusing.
“You handled that well,” Toneri complimented.
“Getting worked up over something like that isn’t worth wasting the energy,” Naruto said with a knowing smile, “Especially since I can use that energy more productively doing something else.”
Toneri understood his point, “How true,” he agreed.
‘Besides, I didn’t feel a shred of negative emotions coming from him.’ Naruto wasn’t going to retaliate, but he would have a few choice words to say. ‘I’m not sure what he was trying to accomplish with that little act of his, but I can take a guess.’ He can think about it later. Right now, the mission takes priority.
They left the Land of Iron after doing one final check and being debriefed on their role from the advisor. Raidō would help guard the Fire Daimyō, while their role was to protect his family. The arrangement made sense, and there were no arguments or complaints. With that done and out of the way, the mission officially began as both groups headed down the road. All was quiet, with the only sound being that of nature itself. While it wasn’t all that bad, peacefulness was unnerving.
Hinata already activated her Byakugan and was scanning the area for any potential threats. Naruto stayed close to the palanquins that held the Fire Daimyō’s family, while Toneri was on the other side. Not even ten minutes had passed before Hinata gave them the signal they were being watched.
‘We’re surrounded. A total of thirty assassins, one of them is further away from the rest,’ Naruto said, suspecting a genjutsu user, ‘Chances are we were placed in one the moment we stepped in this forest area.’ It made them believe nothing was wrong, and by the time they realized otherwise, it would have been too late to react.
Their sensei moved his hand to tug on his hood. That was the signal to engage. But they wouldn’t make the first move just yet. Time seemed to slow down as the three counted in their heads.
Five…
Four…
Three…
Two…
One…!
Hinata moved first, “Kai!” The genjutsu dispelled, revealing all thirty assassins. Before the genjutsu user could cast another one, he was taken out by three chains through the chest. Had he not died instantly, the ninja would have seen where the chains sprouted from, which were right under him. The chains retracted from the corpse and back underground. Naruto deactivated his Senrigan after seeing his attack was effective. And they weren’t done yet. Five of the assassins were lifted in the air by a gravitational force before mercilessly slammed into the ground, crushed to death by something none of them could fight against. Toneri’s hand glowed green as he did the same thing to another group of five.
“Shit!”
“What’s going on?! Aren’t they supposed to be Genin?!” At this point, the rest of the assassins revealed themselves and couldn’t believe most of them were taken out by Genin. In combat, the biggest mistake one could make is underestimating their opponent. No matter the age or physical appearance, a person should always expect the unexpected.
Case in point.
“Gah!” The painful cry of the remaining bandits was heard as Hinata used the opportunity while they were distracted to strike. Her graceful movements confused them, making it impossible for them to predict any of her moves. Cleaning up the rest of them was an easy task, especially with Raidō cutting them down quickly and efficiently, except for letting one of them live. The last man standing, if you can call it that, was currently being interrogated by their sensei about who hired them.
Torture and interrogation isn’t one of Raidō’s skills, but he knows how to play the part. Of course, the guy wasn’t willing to give up the name of the person who hired them. Trying to get anything more than that is a waste of time, which is why torture is needed in this situation. Naruto will give his sensei credit for trying his own unique tactic to get information, but what impressed him was the assassin’s stubbornness. The ending was expected as Raidō ended the man’s life with a flick of his blade. Instead of dying quickly the assassin had some final words to say.
“Y…you think it’s over…?” he gasped out, “We were just the beginning…” A violent cough cut him off briefly, but he continued, “…he’s the one…that will finish the job…” Those were his final words—a warning to them that someone far stronger would complete the job. What a nice way to say all of them will die.
Naruto could see their sensei wasn't worried, but unfortunately, the same can’t be said of the Fire Daimyō’s entourage. Once the fog of their fight faded, the reality of the situation became clear. What a pain. Now they have to deal with another round of questions about their competence to continue the mission with their skill level. This ‘he’ must be referring to the leader of the dead assassins. Funny how their leader isn’t here with them but, that’s probably because he’ll try ambushing them further down the road. Either that or just confront them directly since there was no point in hiding any longer.
Getting rid of the bodies wasn’t hard since all Raidō had to do was make them disappear. The sight disturbed the advisor but not the guard captain, which would make sense for him not to be bothered. When you spend your whole life protecting an important figure from assassins, one tends to be desensitized about getting rid of their corpses.
These dead bandits spoke so highly of their leader, yet he didn’t come here with them. The only explanation for that is simple: pawns.
Expendable pawns, to be exact. And they fulfilled their role perfectly without being the wiser. Showing loyalty to a leader who sees them as pawns to be used and exploited. Poor bastards weren’t even seen as valuable pieces on the board.
“What a mess,” Naruto said, sighing at his own thought process. Dealing with the small fry was one thing, but now they have a boss to deal with. His skill level could be within the range of chunin or jonin, so letting their sensei handle him would save them a lot of trouble.
‘If only it were that easy,’ was Naruto’s humble opinion.
And he would be proven right.
The group resumed walking down the trail after resting from the first attack and came face to face with the ‘leader’ himself. He ambushed them by firing a flaming projectile that would have incinerated them had it not been for Naruto thinking quickly. Barrier seals truly do come in handy. Hinata and Toneri made sure to protect the two carriages, along with Raidō, in case of another projectile, but it was unnecessary. It seems the first projectile was just his way of “greeting” them. Clearly, no one ever taught this guy any manners, or if they did, it didn’t stick.
“Not bad,” coming out from the shadows of the forest around them was a hulking figure, described in-game as a "giant of a man," with spiky, red-orange hair, His cheekbones are well-pronounced, and his eyes are grey. The man wears a sleeveless blue shirt that is tucked into dark grey pants, which, in turn, are tucked into military-style boots. The pants are held up by a red belt, which matches a strap going across his chest from his right shoulder to under his left arm. This strap holds his two large cannons on his back. “And here I thought this would be boring,” he said, smirking at them.
Raidō’s eyes narrowed at the revealed leader. “I know who you are. Bandō the Weapons Dealer—an A-rank criminal wanted internationally for arms dealing,” he said, revealing the man’s name and crime.
“Well, look at that, you know who I am and everything. I’m flattered.” The smirk never left Bandō’s face as he replied. If anything he looked excited someone knew about him
“Tell me, what is a low-life scumbag like you doing here?” Raidō questioned, ready to attack Bandō if so much as even tensed his muscles.
Bandō’s response was laughter, like he was just told the funniest joke. “Why am I here? Isn't it obvious?” Grabbing the canon strapped behind his back, he slammed it to the ground, “I’m here to get paid!” he declared, openly admitting his intent in coming here. Shameless bastard.
“Not very smart exposing yourself.” Raidō remained calm as he assessed the weapons dealer. “For someone who deals illegal weapons on the black market, I expect you to have a sense of caution.” He was clearly questioning this man’s intelligence level, but whoever said you had to be smart in order to kill?
The red haired criminal seemed to agree and said, “Why should I worry about exposing myself when all I’m going up against is some no-name ninja and three Genin? But I’ll admit, if I was up against Kakashi of the Sharingan, then the situation would have been different.” In other words, he doesn’t view Raidō as a threat because he’s not well-known like Kakashi or Gai.
It was likely the same for Raidō as well. Bandō may be a weapons dealer, but he wasn’t a ninja and probably doesn’t fight like one either.
Raidō stepped forward. “You three stay back and protect the Fire Daimyō’s family. I’ll handle this.” Fighting against a criminal like Bandō shouldn’t be much of a challenge, but then again this man is an arms dealer. The only weapon he sees so far is that cannon and nothing else. What else is he hiding?
“So you wanna play, huh? Fine by me.” Bandō removed his fake hand and attached the cannon. “I’ll blow you to pieces!” he declared, firing the cannon. Raidō easily avoided it and rushed in. Despite his size, Bandō was able to block Raidō’s black sword with his weapon and tried punching the ninja. Seeing the slow attack coming, Raidō maneuvered behind the enemy and went to strike his backside, only to be repelled by a burst of orange aura. Obviously caught off guard by the sudden defensive move, Raidō made a hasty retreat.
His reaction amused Bandō. “Surprised? Guess your intelligence neglected to mention my Chakra Armor.” He grinned. “And trust me, it comes in handy since my line of work has put me in the crosshairs of those who want me dead.” Although he rarely needed to use it, as he has sharp senses when it comes to predicting assassination attempts. In most cases, he merely uses his cannon to get the drop on them before they could do it to him.
Raidō didn’t let the sudden revelation bother him. If anything, it put him more on guard. What other tricks does this guy have up his sleeve? He wasn’t interested in finding out, and if he dragged this fight out, it would only benefit the enemy. What to do? ‘That Chakra Armor probably boosted his defense, including his offense. If I can manage to pierce through it, then this fight will be over.’ He relaxed his stance. ‘Kokutō Jutsu: Kokuyōseki (Black Blade Technique: Obsidian).’ Faster than the human eye could process, he was instantly behind Bandō and slashed his back, the swinging of the blade showing a purple after image. It hit the target as the enemy flinched but recovered quickly and turned to swing his fist, only for his intended target to vanish.
Above him, the assassin ninja struck again. ‘Kokutō Jutsu: Yonaka (Black Blade Technique: Midnight).’ Before his opponent could blink, Raidō swung his blade down, but it seems Bandō managed to block just in time, much to Raidō’s astonishment. ‘He managed to block my second attack? Does his Chakra Armor give him enhanced reflexes?’ Unfortunately, he didn’t have a chance to think more about it as a fist was quickly coming towards him. Thinking quickly, he brought up his blade to block it and was sent flying backwards, rolling on the ground before sitting upright. Grimacing in pain, he realized his analysis was right on point about his offense being enhanced. Blocking with his blade was the right move; had he blocked it with his arm, it would’ve broken. Thankfully, his sword was still intact, but then again, it takes a lot to break it. And it's not just his strength; that armor protects him from any attack. His sword couldn't even cut through it.
‘In terms of speed and agility, I still have the advantage. But it doesn't matter much if I can’t get through his armor,’ Raidō thought, trying to devise a strategy that might help him turn this fight around. So far, he’s come up with nothing. There must be something he’s missing, a hidden weakness to that armor that can’t be seen by the human eye. ‘Using physical attacks is pointless, and my sword wasn’t able to cut it, but what if I used a jutsu? No, it probably wouldn’t have any effect, either.’ His thoughts were disrupted when Bandō laughed.
“No point trying to figure out how my armory works; it won’t do you any good,” Bandō mocked. “I’ll admit you’re good since you managed to outmaneuver me, even with my strength enhanced, but…what about them?” His canon arm tensed.
Raidō moved. All previous thought was replaced as he focused on one thing: protecting his Genin! Just as Bandō was about to fire, he was surprised when it was suddenly aimed at him. “What a predictable moron! Die!” Bandō fired it off. Raidō knew he couldn't avoid the blast this time because it was much larger, so he used Body Replacement Technique. The log ended up being blown to pieces, but it created a lot of smoke in the process. Raidō couldn't see anything—not even the cannon that was swung at him from his front. Just as it came close the sound of a CLANG was heard. The smoke cleared, revealing Naruto blocking the attack with his scabbard. Both adults were surprised by his presence as neither sensed him until now. When did he even move?
“Naruto?” Raidō wasn’t expecting the kid to block the blow for him.
Naruto slowly stood up before pushing Bandō away from them. Blue eyes calmly stared at the enemy. “I wasn’t planning on interfering, but I've changed my mind. Who knew a big guy like him would be this much trouble to deal with.” His weapon aside, who knew he had something like Chakra Armor at his disposal?
Bandō smirked slightly. “You managed to block my weapon before it could send your sensei flying. Not bad, kid.” Although he will admit to being surprised by the kid’s speed, he doubts a mere Genin is capable of anything else.
“Not really looking for a compliment from you, but thanks.” Naruto looked over at Raidō and asked, “Hey, you mind if I fight him instead, sensei?”
“What?” Raidō thought he’d misheard him.
“This guy’s Chakra Armor is really troublesome,” Naruto started explaining why he made his request, “but it's not perfect. While your sword wasn’t able to do anything about it, mine might just be up for the challenge.” He gripped his sheathed sword. “That’s why I’m requesting to fight him instead.”
Raidō’s response to that is a resounding “no” but stopped himself from saying it. Why was he hesitating? Was it because Naruto sounded confident he’d be able to defeat an A-Rank hitman with ease? One would call an attitude like that arrogance but he’s not getting that from him. If he’s so confident he can deal with Bandō, then…
“You have my permission,” he said.
Naruto felt a little bad forcing his sensei’s hand like this, and maybe a little guilt mixed in there. He also might be in a hurry to get this mission over with so he can go home. And this fight was dragging on too long, so he stepped in. His sensei can reprimand him about his actions later once this is over.
“You look confident. Maybe I’ll kill you first before going after the rest,” Bandō said.
Not even seeing him as a threat because of his rank as a Genin worked out for him. Annoying as this mission was turning out to be, he can say there’s only one good thing…his sword gets to come out and play.
“Day becomes Night, wake up…Mikazuki Munechika.” Naruto’s distorted voice was felt by everyone as the seal broke and the sword was free. Not only that, but the blue sky changed to black with a yellow moon bathing those below in its glow. Cherry blossoms suddenly bloomed around them. If he cared for everyone’s reactions, he would see the Fire Daimyō’s people couldn’t believe what they were seeing. How could a sword have the power to do something like this? The very sight left them speechless. Raidō lost his composure and stared up at the sudden night sky with his mouth agape. Just what the hell kind of sword is capable of affecting the world around it like this? And where did Naruto get his hands on it?
The sword did more than affect the world around it. Naruto’s hair changed from yellow to black, and his blue eyes turned silver/yellow. Mikazuki Munechika’s blade was beautiful to look at as it glowed in the night.
“Nice little magic trick, kid. Let’s see what else you got!” Bandō aimed his cannon at Naruto.
“The black sky treats the moon as an old friend
Naruto’s tranquil voice came from behind Bandō, as if by teleportation.
Cherry blossoms bloom from the moon’s glow
Lowering his cannon slightly, Bandō’s widened eyes and his form stilled as a thin line went straight down from the top of his head to the very bottom. The arms dealer’s last thoughts were to curse his client for not telling him anything about this particular Genin before his world became black. With the exception of his team, those around them winced while some looked away, as the sight of Bandō’s flesh being split apart was hard to look at.
The sword glints in the moon as an extension of my soul
Naruto sheathed his sword as he said the last line. With the sword back in place, so too was the seal that held it. The sky returned to normal and the cherry blossoms were carried away by the wind. His sun-kissed blonde hair and blue eyes returned to normal. Silence fell upon the area for no one had anything to say. Sighing at the quiet around him, Naruto merely shrugged it off. He hadn’t wanted to go this far, but he had no choice. Besides, now that guard captain has an answer to his question from earlier.
‘Not to mention we can finally get this mission over with. All’s well that ends well.’ Somehow he feels like those are famous last words.
