Chapter Text
"Tell me again, why do I have to be here?" Theo complained for the fourth time in the past ten minutes.
"Because you're a supportive friend who cares weather his best friends make the team or not?" Stiles answered.
"Ohh I already know what's going to happen. Scott's gonna stay team captain, and you're going to sit on a bench the entire season."
Scott let out a small laugh, than after seeing the disappointed look on Stiles' face, he tried to cover it up with a cough.
"That wasn't very supportive friend of you 'Mr. I can't even play lacrosse'."
"At least I'm not pretending I can."
Before Stiles could come up with an unnecessarily personal and mean come back which would probably lead to a huge argument which would lead to Scott locking them into the janitor's closet until they apologise (again), the alpha interrupted the conversation.
"Alright, we've got bigger things to deal with." Stiles and Theo shared one more look which only meant the conversation wasn't over, but who were they to interrupt the true alpha "I've texted Argent to tell him about Kate, but he didn't get back to me."
"You told him his sister came back from the dead over a text?" Stiles raised his eyebrows while Theo let out a sarcastic laugh.
"I didn't have the money to call France."
"Alright, what the hell are we even doing here, we got like a hundred and seventeen million problems and worrying about our status on the lacrosse team is not one of them." the sarcastic boy said hastily.
Before Theo could tell him that he's been asking the same question since they got out of the jeep, his eyes got stuck on the boy who was currently standing in the goal, catching every ball, making it seem so easy even Theo thinks he could do it (and honestly, he sucks at lacrosse).
"It is now."
He heard Scott saying, but he wasn't really listening. He couldn't pull his eyes away from the field, especially not when the boy took his helmet off, revealing his pretty face. The first thing Theo noticed were his eyes. He had big blue eyes with long lashes, he looked like a doll- no he was more of an angel.
"Who is that?" Stiles' voice snapped Theo out of the boy's enchant.
Enchant. He must be a siren, some kind of land siren. It didn't totally sound ridiculous, after all, Theo was a were-coyote himself.
"Nice Liam, you might just be our first ever freshman captain."
Liam.
"Okay, maybe we should just practice a little bit." Stiles said.
"Yeah that's a good idea." Scott agreed.
"I'm just gonna sit here and watch you like a proper creep." Theo spoke, making his way to the benches.
Theo had sat trough a lots of lacrosse practices, he complained about it quite a lot, but he didn't actually mind it. It was great to do his homework or just to listen to some music while watching the guys play. His favourite part was listening to coach yelling at them, that man knew more ways to call someone a failure than a dictionary, hell, even more than Theo's father (which is quite impressive). The boy and coach formed a strange friendship trough the years, it scared the shit out of Stiles when he saw them talking while the team was running laps. Theo would always let coach know when Stiles slowed down even for a second, than they would laugh at him when he threw up on the field because he ate too much before practice, and because he ran more than he's physically capable of. Well, that only happened a few times, but Stiles will never forget it.
However, this time Theo wasn't paying attention to Stiles, he was watching the freshman, Liam. Of course, he was only looking to figure out what kind of a supernatural creature he is, because there was no way that boy was all natural.
But unfortunately, he saw nothing.
"We have to find out what he is." Stiles said as they were walking into the locker room.
"We don't even know if he's supernatural or not." Scott tried to calm his friend down, but once Stiles got something in his head, it was hard to get it out.
"I watched him during practice, I didn't see anything weird." Theo said. "Except the fact that he's good."
"So you watched him, huh?" Stiles turned to him with that stupid smirk Theo hated so much.
"Don't make it weird."
Scott hit both of his friends in the stomach, signalling the fact that the freshman was in hearing distance.
"Hey, Liam." Stiles approached him "Wanna explain what that was out there?"
Theo rolled his eyes. Judging by Stiles' tone, this wasn't going to end well.
"What do you mean?" Liam raised his eyebrows. His voice sounded exactly like Theo imagined it would, not that he thought much about it.
"The little display, the little circus act?"
"What circus act?"
"You caught every shot." Stiles said, like what he was talking about was supposed to be obvious.
"I was in goal."
Theo tried his best to keep his poker face as he turned towards Scott, hoping he would say something to make the conversation less awkward, but Stiles just kept going.
"Yeah, but nothing, not a single shot got past you."
"Yeah, I was the goalie." Liam broke the eye contact with Stiles, and turned to look at Scott "You guys played this game before?"
"You're a freshman, right?" Theo asked, and god he wished he would have kept his mouth shut, because now the boy looked at him, right in the eyes, causing his heart to skip an embarrassingly long beat. He was lucky Scott too focused on the younger boy to notice.
"Yeah."
"But you weren't here last semester."
"I transferred from Devenford Prep."
"You transferred?"
"Yeah?"
"No, you got kicked out, didn't you?"
"Alright, look, kicked out, transferred, what do you care?" the three boys shared a look "I came here to play lacrosse. The team could use a few good players, right?"
"No." Stiles said immediately "No, we don't need any more good players."
"Actually we could sort of use a couple." Scott corrected him carefully.
"Yeah, you guys suck." Theo agreed. Stiles obviously wanted to start an argument, but he swallowed the comeback, and turned to the freshman.
"Okay, how'd you get this good? Have you alway been this good? Or did it suddenly happen just once over night?"
"Oh god." Theo sighed.
"Have you ever been out in the middle of the woods, durning the night of a full moon-"
"Stiles." Scott gave him a look.
"Look I learned from my stepdad, all right? He made team captain when he was a sophomore, like you." he looked at Scott. "and yeah" he grabbed his clothes before taking a step towards Stiles "I guess I'm just that good."
A smirk grew on Theo's face as he watched the freshman make his way out of the locker room.
"He wasn't lying that time." Scott confirmed.
"So what do we do?" Stiles asked.
"We go to class."
"I meant the boy, Theo."
"Seems fine to me." Theo said as he began to walk to class "But I'll keep an eye on him, if that would make you feel better." he turned around and winked at his friend before stepping out of the room, knowing it will piss him off.
"Did you just wink? Why did you wink?" Stiles followed him, already forgetting about Liam, with Scott behind him, who could only roll his eyes.
Theo hated math. There was nothing in this world that he hated more than mathematics, honestly, he would rather spend time with Peter than to sit trough a math class.
But he had no choice.
While he was pretending to take notes, and write down what the teacher writes on the board, he thought about Liam. The boy was either a really good liar, or he wasn't supernatural. Both options seemed to be unbelievable, first, no one could lie to Theo, and second, there was no way someone normal could have an affect like that on Theo. He couldn't explain it, Liam just locked himself into his head, the freshman was all he could think about, his stupid blue eyes and his narcissistic smirk, it was driving him insane.
"An ax murderer?" Theo raised his eyebrows at Stiles. The were-coyote hoped his friend will make him skip school to go and find out more about this murderer. That would take his mind off of the freshman, at least for a while.
"A family- murdering ax murderer." he nodded.
"I already heard about it." Scott sighed.
"Wait, what? You did? How?
"My mom called me. She knew we'd see it on the news."
"Perfect, let's go." Stiles turned around, ready to leave the school and go to the crime scene, Theo was ready to follow him, but Scott, the responsible one, stopped them.
"Whoa, we've got econ in five minutes."
"Right. Did you forget about the family-murdering ax murderer?"
"Did you forget that your dad's the Sheriff? They want us to stay out of it."
"Come on, Scotty. You're no fun." Theo learned against a locker.
"He's right, we should just let the adults handle it." Kira said, making Theo roll his eyes.
"So the two of you, you just wanna stay here at school, go to class..." Stiles spoke, clearly annoyed and disappointed in his friends.
The pair nodded, making Theo roll his eyes again.
"I've never heard anything so irresponsible in my entire life." Stiles turned around dramatically, walking away from his friends, Theo decided to follow him.
"See you at tryouts?" the alpha tried, only to be ignored.
"So what's you big theory?" Theo asked as him and Stiles continued to walk to class. "Who's gonna be the next victim of the family-murdering ax murderer?"
"I don't know yet." he said "But I have a bad feeling about this."
"Of course you have a bad feeling about it, he killed an entire family."
"That's not what I meant." they walked into the class room and took their seats at the back, Stiles lowered his tone, afraid someone could overhear them. "I feel like this isn't going to be the killer's last murder."
"Let's hope your dad catches him before he could even think about planning a next one."
"Yeah."
The classes seem to pass by faster than usual, but than again, maybe Theo just has a lot in his mind. Now he was sitting on the benches with Malia and Kira, watching his friends embarrass themselves over and over again, while the freshman didn't miss once.
"Isn't the captain supposed to be better than the rest of the team?" Kira asked, not really expecting an answer "or good?"
Theo wanted to say something about how the entire team sucks, but than it was Liam's turn again, and of course he scored (again), and than that annoying smirk appeared on his face, and than Theo forgot about his friends, his thoughts wondered back to debating how embarrassing it would be to ask Deaton about sirens.
The sweet familiar sound of coach blowing his whistle snapped Theo back to reality.
"McCall, Stilinski, grab the long sticks. You're covering goal for two-on-ones. Let's go! Line up!"
Surprisingly Scott and Stiles did an alright job at covering (not that Theo had any idea what was going on), they even got a few compliments from coach.
And than it was the freshman's turn, who of course, scored.
"That was luck!" Malia stood up suddenly "Do-over!" Theo let out a chuckle.
"Sweetheart, there's no do-overs, this is practice."
"Ten bucks on Scott and Stiles."
"I'll take that action. Hey! Get back in there Liam."
Theo could hear Scott's heartbeat rising, and when the alpha let out a growl, he knew something was going to go terribly wrong.
It all happened so fast, one second Liam was running, the other he landed on the ground with the painful crack of a bone. Theo didn't hesitate to run up to his friends and help them carry the boy to the jeep so they can take him to the hospital.
"I'm so sorry- I didn't mean to push you like that." Scott spoke rapidly.
"It wasn't your fault." the freshman said, clearly in a lot of pain, and not in the mood to listen to the older boy's apologies.
"Still, I'm really sor-"
"Scott, you should call your mom, let her know we're coming?" Theo said, Liam looked up at him with his big eyes, he almost looked grateful for shutting Scott up, and Theo guessed he was trying to say thank you, so he nodded, and gave him a half smile.
The were-coyote and the human boy carried the freshman while the alpha made the phone calls to get Liam to a hospital.
"My stepdad is going to kill me." the younger boy sighed, probably not even noticing he said the sentence out loud.
"You'll be fine, kid. Don't be so dramatic." Theo rolled his eyes.
"Wow, Theo, your absolutely zero empathy sometimes really makes me wonder if you're a sociopath." Stiles said, the were-coyote only rolled his eyes.
It's not that he didn't feel bad about this whole accident, it's just that he had no idea how to express it. What was he supposed to do? Kiss the guy's leg better?
They carefully put him in the backseat of the jeep, for the rest of the ride they sat in not so comfortable silence.
