Chapter 1: Mission Housecall
Chapter Text
When Reyna had sent an Iris Message to her, Rachel didn’t know what to expect. Having the leader of Camp Jupiter message you out of the blue would send a shiver through anyone who knew something about the Praetor. Reyna was not someone to make idle conversation, or call with no purpose. So, when the Senior Praetor’s face appeared to the left of Rachel’s desk, the redhead straightened her spine, cleared her head (to the best of her ability), and greeted the other woman with grace.
“Praetor, what a surprise!”
The older woman grinned, “Do you not always expect a call from me at any hour of the day?”
Rachel laughed at Reyna’s jab. Who was she kidding? Reyna might be stern and serious, but she wasn’t unfriendly to those she trusted.
“Nope, not at all my favorite Praetor.”
Reyna’s eyes crinkled at the sides.
“I’m afraid this isn’t just a house call,” Her image through the mist grew tighter, like a coil ready to snap, “I’m half an hour away from your camp and request not to be speared by a overzealous 12-year-old.”
It took Rachel a moment to decipher what Reyna was saying. What business would she have at Camp Half-Blood? The last time she visited was the one year anniversary of the Giant War, and that was months ago. And why was she asking her, Rachel, of all people? She didn’t fight much in the Giant War and had only met the Praetor a handful of times in the past.
Realizing she had been spacing out, Rachel shoved her mind to focusing on Reyna’s face. Now that the shock had worn off, Rachel could see the outline of a car headrest and the sound of a highway in the background. In the back of her head Rachel wondered when Reyna had taken her driver’s test and then tried to picture her in a DMV.
“I’ll be waiting for you at Thalia’s Tree. just park on the road side.”
Reyna nodded in confirmation and swiped her hand through the mist, ending the call. Once all remnants of magical communication were gone, Rachel slumped into her chair like a limp noodle. Her day had been going perfectly fine, a bit boring maybe, but fine nonetheless until Reyna.
Deciding the Senior Praetor would be the type of person to be early for everything, Rachel started her way to the Thalia’s Tree. The woods were as beautiful as ever with several nymphs stopping their tasks to wave at their camp oracle. The sun above warmed Rachel’s head and the faint breeze rustled the canopies above.
Soon enough the woods broke to give way to the vast strawberry fields and training grounds. In the distance she could see several classes taking place. Everything from normal and combat archery, to lava rock climbing, and even underwater basket weaving could be taught and mastered at camp. The sight of washes of green and blue, sprinkled with cabins and campers, would never grow old to Rachel.
Knowing she had a timeline to keep, Rachel avoided most of the campers as to not be sucked into a friendly greeting turned full blown conversation.
Thalia’s Tree, golden fleece and dragon guardian included, stood tall above the valley. It’s her where Rachel stood and waited for Reyna. She didn’t mind the wait and, as predicted, Reyna showed up a whole ten minutes before her own estimate.
“Praetor Reyna, welcome to Camp Half-Blood.” Smiled Rachel.
The older girl grinned back, “Hello Oracle of Delphi, thank you for having me.”
The two shared a sly joke with the overly formal titles.
“If you’ve driven all this way I assume whatever you have to say is important?” Rachel cut right to the point. If her and Reyna agreed on anything more, it was the wonderfulness of direct communication.
“It is. Here is private enough I assume?” Reyna looked around like someone would just pop out of nowhere, very cautious.
“Yeah,” Rachel fidgeted, “What’s going on to need all this… security?”
Reyna’s behavior was worrying. Her eyebags were quite pronounced and she looked tense. Shoulders so ridged Rachel was surprised Reyna could move at all.
“I think we should talk with Chiron.” Reyna marched towards the Big House.
Clearly the raven-haired leader was not going to change her mind, so Rachel simply shrugged and followed. The Praetor’s clothing was more casual than last time at the anniversary but she still donned her purple cloak. A marker of her status, clear as day.
As the two drew closer to the cabins more campers noticed their new visitor.
“Reyna!”
The purple clad woman turned. Piper, fresh from the bathhouse if her wet hair was any indicator, opened her arms with a bright smile on her face. Her tanned skin seemed to glow but Rachel chalked that up to her some after effect of Charmspeak or something.
“Hello McLean, good to see you.” Greeted Reyna warmly.
While the two demigods hadn’t fought together in the war much, they both had found a deep respect for one another based on their loyalty and hard work.
“What brings you to the east coast? Getten tired of Cali?”
Reyna chuckled, “Not even close. I’m here to meet with Chiron and Rachel. Official business, very important. You can join us if you wish.”
Piper tilted her head in thought, “Important like the end of the world? You know I’m always up for anything.”
“Nothing that severe Piper.” Reassured Reyna. At this point there had grown a crowd around the girls and Reyna assuring there wasn’t a new apocalypse calmed everyone’s nerves.
“Good to hear. Keep me posted just in case.”
“Of course.”
Piper walked off, presumably to the Aphrodite cabin to finish drying off, and Reyna turned back to the Big House. She did take the time to harshly scrutinize (definitely not glare at) the onlookers.
Satisfied her daily number of people scared was met, Reyna cast a glance over her shoulder to make sure Rachel was still with her.
“It’s not something that will end the whole world, but it might shake up ours.” She said in a low voice so others couldn’t overhear.
The Big House loomed closer and closer. Rachel’s anticipation for Reyna’s message couldn’t be stopped with a familiar setting. The creeks of the wooden slabs and fresh smell of strawberries filled Rachels senses.
“Praetor Reyna. What an unexpected surprise.” Greeted Chiron, he was back in his enchanted wheelchair, his non-human half tucked safely away.
“Chiron. We have a lot to discuss today.” Reyna didn’t bother hiding her impatience.
“Yes, I think we do. Please,” Chiron gestured to inside his office, “take a seat and we can talk.”
Reyna nodded and entered his office, Rachel followed her example. Chiron’s office looked like an odd mix between an outdated Best Buy and a tenured history professors' closet. One one wall rested two TVs, a video player, and several shelves of vinyl records. Cords and remotes dumped about. His desk housed many volumes of ancient and modern books. Some think enough to fit under the closed door and others as thick as Rachel’s head. Many were dusty and even more were slotted on the bookshelf to her left. The room might have been a mess, but it was clearly lived in and that’s what mattered to Rachel.
In front of Chiron’s desk were two chairs. They looked like he plucked them from a classroom and, knowing his past shenanigans from Percy, they probably were.
“So, Reyna, what brings you to Camp Half-Blood so suddenly?”
The older girl moved her chair so she could talk to both Chiron and Rachel, “You two know of Nico’s role as ambassador between camps, yes?”
Chiron and Rachel nodded. Nico was already doing that job even before the camps knew of each other, so when each camp was looking for someone he was the obvious choice. He had experience fighting, could navigate in and to both camps well, and could be collected in times of crisis. Rachel didn’t really know him when he was younger, but he seemed like a reliable demigod now.
“He was visiting one of the North Dakota werewolf settlements, cursed-born don’t worry, and he came across homes destroyed by mass carnage. Dozens dead with evidence of a break in. So he began to look into things. Turns out there’s a community of mortals with enough Clear Sight to find monsters. These mortals have taken it upon themselves to hunt and kill monsters they do find, call themselves ‘hunters’ and everything. He found the hunters who killed the werewolves and got an invite to a collective meeting they’re having in a five days. He thinks they’re trying to unite previously independent hunters into a collective of sorts. Nico asked me to be with him and someone from Camp Half-blood. Representatives from both camps if you will. And this is what I offer today. I need someone who is willing to step up, if you approve, Chiron.”
Reyna leaned back into her chair and observed Chiron and Rachel’s reactions. Chiron didn’t let much past his poker face, but he’s spent thousands of years perfecting it. Rachel, on the other hand, had her heart on her sleeve. How could that be? Curse-born werewolves weren’t a serious threat to mortals. And Rachel knew for a fact there were children in those settlements!
“I know of these mortal hunters. I was almost caught by a lucky one some decades ago. Are you sure they are banding together in such a way?” Asked Chiron.
“Nico said the hunters who invited him called themselves the Men of Letters, but that's all he knows.”
“And who would you have go with you? I can’t imagine these Men of Letters would appreciate me.” He gestured down at his glamoured legs.
“That’s why I’m here. I don’t know your campers the way you do and I need to make a smart pick. These hunters are moral, yes, but I don't trust they won’t get into our business.”
“Rachel dear, what do you think?” Asked Chiron softly.
“I,” Rachel couldn’t formulate a response, “I don’t know. Not me, that’s for sure! Maybe Jason? Or Hazel? They’re calm and collected like all the time, right?”
Her uncertainty must look awful, but she still couldn’t get Reyna’s telling of Nico’s house visit out of her head. Dozens dead so easily? How could this be?
Rayna shook her head, “Hazel is Romana and she’s just a legionnaire. I’m also going to this meeting and that’s all the Roman presence I think’s necessary. And Jason has already declined seeing as he’s busy with his own work.”
“And I don’t want to send one of the younger campers, they’re not ready for something so serious. Perhaps someone more responsible, like a Head Counselor. I don't know them well enough to make a decision, which is why I’m asking you two.”
“Well…” Thought Rachel, “Will is busy in the infirmary, Leo’s doing his mechanical stuff in Bunker Nine all the time, I don’t trust Connor or Clovis, Percy and Katie are at school right now, Miranda is dealing with the nature nymphs at the moment, and I really don’t think sending some of the newer counselors is a good idea. So I can only suggest Piper, Malcolm, or Butch to go with you.”
Reyna nodded along, “I’d like to bring Piper with me. I’d prefer someone I’ve worked with before and her charmspeak will be useful to have ready.”
“Are you sure? Malcolm is really smart, and Butch is very reliable in a pinch.”
“I’m sure. Piper is the best fit. Nico and I have worked with her before plus her skills at speaking will be indispensable.”
Chiron folded his arms together, “I think this settles it. I grant you permission to take Piper with you and I trust you, her, and Nico will be safe when meeting the Men of Letters.”
“Of course, thank you for your blessing,” Reyna stood up, “I’ll go ask her. Velim tibi optima.”

Chapter Text
Piper stared at her reflection. The vanity mirror she was using sparkled as the clearest and most high quality mirror a girl could ask for. Of course, Drew didn’t need to know Piper regularly used her vanity. What she doesn’t know can't hurt her, after all.
Her hair had grown out since her last big chop. She didn’t really get a chance to go to town with a pair of craft scissors when sailing to Greece or fighting for her life. And with everything after the war, she just never found the time. Instead she let her hair grow out and just kept on braiding it back.
Now, truly looking at herself for the first time in months, she decided she liked her hair a bit longer. Liked the hazelnut strands falling down her shoulder. If only for the time being. It made her face look longer, older, and her nose seemed to be more in balance with everything else.
“Come on..”
At the sound of Drew’s voice Piper shot up, out of her section of the cabin, and to the door. Trying to act like she was just heading out.
“Oh, Piper,” Drew drawled out with indifference, “Didn’t see or hear you coming.”
The black-haired girl brushed past Piper on her way into the cabin. Their relationship was getting better, meaning Drew no longer wanted Piper’s head on a pike and Piper didn’t loathe Drew. It was the small victories that count.
Piper grunted out a greeting. As Head Counselor, it was her duty to treat everyone under her fairly and with respect. Some days it was harder than others, but Piper was sure fast that she wouldn’t abuse her power as Drew once did.
Walking out to camp, Piper relaxed in the sun’s rays. Her only assigned activity was sparring in the morning, so now the rest of her day was free to enjoy. Maybe she would do some painting, or try out baking again!
But Piper’s dreams of an easy afternoon was dashed with a purple clade figure marching towards her dead on.
Reyna stopped a foot in front of Piper, “You said you were always up for anything?”
“Yeah.” Piper cautiously answered, Reyna asked her that in such a grave manner you’d think she was being asked to her own funeral.
“How do you feel acting as a representative of Camp Half-Blood in front of some morals who’ve stumbled upon monsters?” Reyna proposed, leaning in close to Piper’s ear as she did so.
She was so close Piper could feel her hot breath on her skin.
“This wouldn’t have anything to do with your meeting with Rachel and Chiron, would it?”
Reyna gave a grim nod, “Say yes, and I’ll tell you everything in the car.”
“Yes.” Piper answered confidently, smiling.
Piper didn’t want to admit it, but camp was getting boring. She knew the good old days of stealing cars and makeup she’d never wear were all in the past. Her younger self trying to get her father’s attention. But she had to admit, it was fun.
Reyna pulled back from Piper and turned to Rachel, “I trust you and Chiron will inform us of any changes.”
Unfazed with the Roman’s intensity, the oracle nodded her head. Red curls bouncing in the light.
“We’ll Iris Message you. Just try not to be driving while we do so.”
Piper watched the two chuckle. Reyna must have called Rachel on the road.
“Do I need to bring anything?”
“I’ll grab you the normal quest bag,” Answered Rachel, “Anything else she’ll need Reyna?”
“A couple sets of clothes. We’re going to be on the road for some days.”
Piper turned back to the cabin she just left, “Meet you where?”
“On the hill! You’ll see her car!” Called out Rachel.
Piper didn’t need to look back and know the two demigods were getting prepared themselves. Rachel going to the Big House for a quest bag (medical supplies, money in the necessary currency, ambrosia and nectar, golden drachmas, and granola bars) and Reyna to her car.
In the Barbie pink wonderland that is Aphrodite’s cabin, Piper found a maroon duffle bag and started filling it with her stuff. In went t-shirts, jeans, some flip-flops (who knows what she’ll face?), a pocket knife, and her dad’s credit card for emergencies.
“What are you packing for? I didn’t hear of any new quests?”
Behind Piper stood Lacy. Her blonde hair swept into a ponytail today and hot pink bands decorated her braces.
“That’s cause it’s not a quest Lac,” Answered Piper, “I’m going on… some business with Camp Jupiter. That’s all.”
Lacy arched an eyebrow, “Is that why Praetor Reyna is here?”
“Yep!”
“Well good luck then!” Lacy rushed to Piper and squeezed her middle.
Piper smiled wide to her younger friend, “Thanks a million Lac.”
The blonde gave her head counselor another smile before scampering out of the cabin. If Piper remembered correctly, she had first aid this afternoon with Will.
Piper returned to her packing. She didn’t know who originally owned the duffle bag she was commandeering, but it was stuffed into the back of a communal closet, so it couldn’t be too important. Hopefully nothing bad happened to its past owner.
Her bag filled with the demigod essentials, Piper exited her cabin and jogged to Half-Blood Hill. As promised, Reyna was there leaning against a tan Toyota. Her posture much more regal than her vehicle would ever allow Piper. Rachel could be seen near the truck, presumably helping Piper and Reyna’s send off. It wasn’t a quest, but some good luck wishes couldn’t hurt.
“Have everything McLean?”
Piper tossed her bag into the back seats, “Not my first quest, don’t forget it.”
Reyna grinned with humor and swung her keys around her index finger. Even though she was older and a Praetor, it could be argued the Daughter of Aphrodite had a superiority to her as she had completed more quests then Reyna. Piper never missed an opportunity to show off her credentials.
“Well, this isn’t a quest so don’t get too worked up here,” Rachel butted in, “Make sure to tell Nico I said hi too! I haven’t seen him in a while.”
Piper turned to hug her new friend. Her arms nestled tight around the redhead.
“Don’t worry. I’ll make sure to bug Nico so much, he’ll have to come over.”
“And I’ll make sure Piper comes back in one piece after all this bugging.” Joked Reyna as she too got a hug from Rachel.
“I’ll Iris Message if anything comes up over here or if me and Chiron find anything else on the Men of Letters.” Rachel looked into Reyna’s eyes to convey her seriousness.
Clear Sight was rare in morals. Perhaps the Men of Letters had some legacies in their ranks, but even the best of demigods could be fooled so what’s to say that theory was sound? Piper knew Annabeth’s father and Percy’s mother were more clear sighted than average but that’s it. The only true mortal she knew with Clear Sight was Rachel.
“I’m counting on it,” Rayna shifted on her feet, “I don’t like not knowing what I’m running into.”
Piper ran up and crushed the two other girls in her arms, “Don’t worry about it. Maybe Nico will fill us in some more, yeah? Now let’s get going!”
Reyna slid into the driver's seat and Piper into the passenger. The older car protested some as Reyna moved it over the grass, but soon enough they were back on pavement. Looking over her shoulder, Piper saw Rachel making her way back up Half-Blood Hill. She didn't envy the new workload placed on Rachel’s shoulders.
“Where is Nico? You never told us?” Asked Piper.
“It’s in Hildreth, Nebraska.”
“What?” Piper turned in her seat to dead stare Reyna, “That’s a three day drive minimum! And let me guess, Nico’s shadow traveling there.”
Reyna’s lips pursed together in a frustrated line. She was clearly not a fan of Nico’s habit of slipping into the shadows anytime a commute was longer than five minutes.
“It’s better than trying to get a flight at least.”
Piper cocked an eyebrow. She knew many of her fellow campers didn’t like flying just from the practicality issues. Paying for a flight was way out of budget. Being so close to all that technology and people also posed a higher risk for everyone involved. And the carry on top was a certain sky god having a vendetta against half of camp. So yeah, flying was not a popular mode of travel.
“I have a literal private jet, Reyna.” Piper deadpanned.
A flash of realization crossed Reyna’s face. Piper never brought to attention who her father was or how rich she’d grown up, so forgetting those factoids about her life was easy. What wasn’t easy was when those factoids would’ve made certain things easier. Like now for instance.
“And you bring this up now?” She snarled in frustration.
“Why would I? I wasn’t expecting to be carted away for days to the middle of the country!” Piper said, exacerbated, she threw her head on the back of her seat.
Some moments later Piper spoke up again, this time in a softer voice, “Why didn’t you tell us?”
Reyna glanced over at her companion. Piper had taken the time to braid her hair back, save for some pesky strands, and the raven-haired girl took some time to appreciate the style. Practical with the added benefit of highlighting Piper’s features.
“I needed backup,” Reyna started out slowly, “I know this isn’t a quest per say, but it’s still important. Nico made this sound important. I wanted a third demigod with us. And who better than a Greek?”
Piper nodded along. It made sense.
“I really didn’t need Chiron or anyone else telling me what to do. Or holding me up. We can make it in four days and join Nico on the fifth.”
“I still wish you told us,” Piper started, “but now I’m here. So there’s no getting rid of me.”
Reyna chuckled, “I’ve never known a child of Aphrodite so well, are you all like this?”
Piper just smiled. A secretive smile. It made Piper feel confidence in her chest and Reyna to feel warm in the apples’ of her cheeks.

Chapter Text
The lengths Nico was willing to go for these strangers to believe him were actually insane. Will had helped him spruce up his wardrobe from the regular blacks to something more “normie.” Blue jeans, odd nature t-shirts, and thick fleece jackets.
It was hideous on him.
Now the son of Hades is crawling on his knees in a dusty house trying not to get sucked on by a vampire. His labored breaths made dust fill his nose, thick and clotting from time. His hands, bare for ease of using his sword, flinched at every dead spider and questionable piles of… something he touched.
“Fuck this shit. Supide vampires and dumb fucking plans.” Nico grumbled under his breath.
He had picked up on this quest (was that the right word?) from a newspaper he picked off the side of the street. “THREE PEOPLE FOUND DEAD IN POND" was the headline. The bold title picked to draw in buyers from the local paper no doubt. Evidently it worked as Nico paid a dollar fifty to learn more.
The facts of the quest were as followed (not in order of importance):
1) Three people died in swift succession. Fast enough to be noticeable to the general public.
2) All three victims had unknown causes of death but bite marks were noted to be found on the bodies.
3) After Nico had paid for the newspaper, Davis had called him to ask if he would be interested in a case (that’s the word!) in the same town dealing with a vampire nest.
Nico, not to be one to deny an opportunity given by the Fates, took the brit up on his offer.
And now he was here. In the dirt. Trying not to die.
“You’ll have to come out eventually, boy.” Hissed the last remaining monster, “Come out now and I’ll make your death quick.”
Nico paused his crawling and looked up at the floorboard above. The vampire was pacing above Nico. The demigod guessed the monster couldn’t smell where he was exactly from the previous fighting which worked out for Nico great.
“Fuck off!” Nico called back in frustration before realizing his mistake. The vampire zeroed in on Nico’s voice and began clawing at the floorboards. Their nails made a horrible scratching sound against dry wood.
Like a C-list horror movie, the vampire’s hand shot down in front of Nico’s face. With all the instincts of an alive demigod, Nico stabbed the hand with a short steel blade. Not enough to kill the monster, but still enough for the vampire to retract their hand.
Nico used the hole to shoot out of the floor and attack first. His trusted Stygian iron sword, once secured to his back, unsheathed before the demigod.
With a quick jab Nico used his blade to pierce the vampire’s chest. Unlike Greek mythological monsters whose gold dust would vortex into the sword, these supernatural creatures usually just shriveled up like they were being dehydrated.
Nico rolled his shoulders with a sigh. The room he popped up in was trashed. The rest of the house probably was too. It wasn’t a small vampire nest, but having to kill nine of anything makes a mess. Resigning himself to a long cleanup, Nico sheathed his blade and started dialing Davis. A phone was yet another risk Nico had to take while trying to get in with other hunters.
“Mick Davis speaking.”
“It’s Nico. I just finished up with the vampires.” Nico pinched the simple flip phone between his cheek and shoulder while he dragged various bodies to the backyard to bury. “So, mark it down in your fancy computers or whatever you do.”
“Of course. I’ll make sure to do that.” Davis sounded patronizing and smug. Nico hated his guts at the moment. “You’ve been a great help Nico. not many American hunter’s have been willing to take us up on our offer.”
Nico privately thought these other hunters were pretty smart to stay away. “That sucks.”
“Yes, it does.” Davis inhaled loudly into the phone speaker. “I was actually meaning to ask you something.”
Nico grunted as he dragged a particularly heavy body, “Go on.”
“You haven’t been to our new base, have you? There’s another hunter who’s agreed to our terms and I think seeing a familiar face would help put her at ease. She said she’d bring along some guests and I think, if you come along, you should too.”
Nico didn’t bother mentioning how this other hunter had probably never seen him before. “I’d be down for that. Are you guys paying for dinner?”
Davis chuckled. “There will be food provided. Think of it as a courtesy from up to you.”
“Sounds good. I have some people in mind. When’s the meeting?”
“It’s ten days from today. I’ll text you the coordinates.”
Nico took his phone in hand, said “See you then,” and then hung up. He shoved his hand out and the earth swallowed the vampire bodies whole. Nico was quite grateful he didn’t have to deal with a fire or digging a hole himself.
In the distance the sun rose over the horizon. A warm glow brightening the sky.
In the next twelve hours, Nico will Iris message Reyna and get a proper quest started. But for now the son of Hades just needed a nap.
