Chicago 2013
“So, there I am, waiting for my train, when the lights go out.” “Yeah, don’t get me wrong, I love fucking with the traffic lights but can you tell me why I was almost an involuntary participant in a four-car collision?”
The sound of cars beeping and colliding was heard over the line as Aiden sighed in distress. “I guarantee that’s just the start of it. Damien has full access.” He says as the rough sound of metal clashing against metal was heard “Over my dead body. Not gonna let my CTOS baby get gummed up by that wackadoodle.” Ray’s loud voice cut through the call making Nine almost crash into another pole “Shut up Ray! I told you to add my anti-hacking software and virus but no. You just didn't want to share your toys.” She yells as she swerves, just barely missing a tree “You didn’t have proof that it worked. I wasn’t bout to take the word of some kid when it came to my algorithm.” He argues back, making Aiden roll his eyes “I’m 19 you hillbilly fuckhead!” She yells back. “Cool it, Tobias. T-bone, Give me some news.” Nine grumbles quietly in the background as Ray laughs at her getting told off. “There’s a weak point he won’t know about. Get over there and shut it down. That’ll end his joyride quick and pronto.” Nine felt a bit of relief at that news. “I’ll call you both once I’m in. Nice to have you guys back.” Aiden states sincerely, making Nine smile “Well not like I have anything better to do.” She jokes, earning a small snort from Aiden. “And I do like being useful,” Ray says before the call is cut.
Just as Nine had found a way away from all the traffic lights, her phone rang once again. “He’s blocked us out. I need him disconnected fast.” Nine hums as she comes up to an abandoned food taking the opportunity to take a soft pretzel on her way by. “Well, shit… I got one idea but… Last time I did it… people died.” Ray says, making her roll her eyes “Way to be ominous Ray but we don’t have much of a choice here.” She says as she hijacks a motorcycle. “If we don’t do it, people will die. What do you got?” Aiden asks, sounding as if he’d just run a marathon. “The whole networks tied to a satellite. Runs as a kind of safety valve to CTOS.” He says before pausing. I used Nine’s homemade virus. It's one mean motherfucker.” Nine gasps playfully “Aww Ray, you’re the best nearly alcoholic father figure I never asked for.” “Can it, would ya Nine! Aiden, You gotta install it from three separate points.” Nine simply laughs in response “What does it do?” Aiden asks “It’ll shut down that bag of dicks, that’s for damn sure.” She says with a slight chuckle. “Sounds like this could get ugly.” Aiden says, earning a scoff from Ray. “You don’t know the half of it, Amigo. Give us a call back when they’re installed. We’ll get it done right.”
Ray and Nine had met each other at the “hideout” just in time for Aiden’s call. “It’s done. Your viruses are in” Aiden says as the sound of sirens seem to get farther and farther away from his location. “All Right. We’re in it now. Head back to that weak point… Right where we started. Now it’ll open up like a ladies…” Nine turns to Ray with a glare, making him pause for a moment “Uh, nevermind, You’ll have a clear line to the satellite, and that’s what’s important.” He says, clearing his throat, making Nine roll her eyes and smile slightly. “Okay, clear line to the satellite. You say that’s the safety valve?” “And a little more. Once you’re inside, you’ll pull the trigger.” Ray confirms, making Nine smiles takes the phone from Ray “And then it’ll be lights out, Aiden. If you’re lucky, the back tracing software built into my virus will kick in and you’ll get a lock on Damien’s Location.” She says, making Ray laugh and clap her on the shoulder “Good going kid” He says, making her smile. “Good Job, Tobias. His Location is all I want.” Aiden says before ending the call.
“See, I told you my virus was advanced. Next time you really should just take my word for it, huh?” She says as she walks to the fridge and takes a soda before plopping down in front of her laptop. “You’re right, I guess I shouldn’t have underestimated you.” He says as he grabs a beer and sits on the couch watching the news. “Where are you going after this, kid?” She smiles and shrugs “Studying Computer Programming and Cyber security. I just got accepted into Stanford University.” She says happily. “Well shit, Stanford’s one of the top tech universities, Right?” She nods happily “Yeah. My parents both went there in their youths. I know they would’ve just wanted me to go wherever I'd be most happy but I just feel like attending this university would help me not only further my career but I feel like it's also an opportunity to feel closer to them as well.” She says honestly, making Ray tilt his head in confusion.
“Your parents? Are they-” “Dead. Yeah, they died when I was 16. It was supposedly a double suicide according to authorities but I don’t believe that. I know there’s more to the story. That’s why I’m doing this. I will find out what happened and avenge them.” She says as she looks away from her laptop screen and to Ray who sat with a smile “You’ll do it. You’re already advanced in your hacking skills. Who knows what that fancy school will teach you.” He says kindly “Well anytime you need me, Just call your old father figure T-bone, or Uncle Aiden. We both know he’ll be willing to help you no matter what.” Ray jokes making Nine laugh “Yeah. I know I can count on you guys but I won’t have to. I know I’ve got this covered all on my own.” She says before her phone vibrates suddenly
“Jordi! Thought you were off buying contracts?” She says with a smile “I am. Tell me you’re not with The Fox right now.” She tilts her head “This sounds like a suspicious warning. So what if I was?” She asks as she crosses her arms. She holds her hand out to Ray, signaling that she’d be a moment before walking off and lowering her voice. “Jordi, this better not be what I think it is.” She warns as she eyes her things, already knowing the answer to her unfortunate question. “Look kid, I know what you’re thinking and because I admire your energy and determination and I guess you’re also not the worst person to associate with, I’ll tell you this once. Don’t bring a knife to this gun fight, Toby. Let the adults handle this and you stay where it’s safe. Got it?” He says and she hears the sound of a boat engine running “Jordi, as much as I love you, you know that’s not gonna happen. You forgot you also admire my stubbornness and my willingness to run into a battle with guns blazing no matter what.” She says as she grabs her messenger bag and a few electronics. “I know, I just wouldn’t be able to live with myself if I didn’t at least try to stop you.” He says with a dry chuckle “You know I can’t guarantee your safety if you go.” She smiles slightly “You know I admire a challenge. No hard feelings when I come out on top, right?” She jokes as she makes her way over to Ray. “Yeah, No hard feelings.”
She ends the call as she stops in front of Ray. “Give me your gun, Aiden’s got a bit of a roadblock that I’m gonna go deal with.” She says, holding out her hand in an impatient way. “Are you sure you got this? I’m much more suited to this type of thing, don’t ya think?” He says as he hesitantly hands her the gun from the table beside the couch. “Don’t worry Father , I got this. Jordi wouldn’t actually hurt me, no matter how tough he tries to act.” She replies sarcastically as she checks the mag before clicking it back into place then tucking it into her waistband carefully. “Whatever you say kiddo . Someone’s just gotta boss you around a little, otherwise you’d go out and get yourself hurt.” He says as he rolls his eyes playfully. She doesn’t stay to argue and leaves in a rush, tracking Damien’s location using her Virus just like Aiden had.
It took her less than 20 minutes to find the lighthouse, seeing as it was the only thing lit in the entire city. By the time she made it to the top of the tower, she heard Aiden and Damien’s voices. She stands behind the light listening to their conversation until a hand grabs her shoulder. She gasps and turns around pointing a gun at the person only to find Jordi standing there with his infamous grin “Gotta work on your reflexes kid.” He jokes, making her give him a look “Don’t do this, Jordi.” She whispers her pleas but he simply pats her shoulder before walking around to the otherside of the light with his gun drawn. She curses under her breath and silently sneaks to the opposite side where Aiden was standing.
“Blah. Blah. Blah… Jesus you guys talk a lot.” Jordi complains as he points the gun at Damien, Making her sigh slightly in relief. “What are you doing here?” Aiden asks in confusion as he slowly shifts his gun back to facing Damien. “Sorry pal, New contract. Kick it over.” Jordi demands, making Nine’s Heartbeat pick up when he points his gun at Aiden. She silently begs for Aiden not to do it. She curses when Aiden kicks his gun over the edge of the platform. She reaches down and grabs her own gun, eyeing it before turning off the safety and peaking back over. She didn’t want to have to shoot Jordi. He was like an annoying older brother of sorts. Maybe she was just projecting her lack of parents and siblings onto these obviously dangerous people. “Ah! Ah! The phone too. Give it to me.” Jordi demands, faltering as Nine enters his frame of view. She looks at the phone in Aidens hand and curses, dropping to the floor just as the light to the lighthouse explodes. Damien gets knocked to the ground as Jordi and Aiden fight for the gun. Aiden flips Jordi over the edge as Damien draws his gun. Nine is quick to act from her spot on the ground, shooting the gun from Damiens hand before he has the chance to point it at Aiden. Aiden turns once again and plants a bullet in Damiens skull, Killing him instantly
“Dammit, Solanine. You alright kid? Are you hurt?” He asks as he rushes to her side and helps her up. She grunts a bit but is otherwise alright “Yeah, I’m good. Are you alright?” she asks as she dusts the bits of broken glass out of her hair and off her body. “Yeah, Nine. I’ll be alright.” She nods as she walks around Damien’s and peaks over the edge to find that Jordi is nowhere in sight. She can’t help but smile to herself as Aiden walks over, putting an arm around her shoulders as he looks over the edge as well “Sorry about Jordi.” He says simply. She shakes her head and throws an arm around him “Don’t worry about it, No hard feelings to whoever had to lose here. We both knew it’d be me anyways.” She jokes as she pulls him away from the scene “How about a bite to eat before you go deal with Maurice?” She asks, making him chuckle “Sounds like a plan, kid.”

Her time has moved on and she decides to go to the same university her parents had attended many years ago. Years later, she finds the major hacking group, DedSec, serving as a cure for her boredom and her ticket to taking down Blume. She could never have predicted finding love and family in this supposedly deadly group of misfits.
Chapter Text
San Francisco 2016
“A San Francisco group of hackers has exposed New Dawn’s religious secrets.” Solanine yelps in pain and throws her soldering iron onto the bench in irritation before looking over to the laptop screen in curiosity. “DedSec revealed footage of New Dawn’s “Temple” area and demonstrated that the so-called ancient artifacts were simply taken of what New Dawn claimed were “ancient tablets. Members of the hacker group managed to infiltrate the highly guarded compound and capture the secretive organization’s methods of control over members, including movie star Jimmy Siska. New Dawn declined our requests for an interview.” She stares at her screen in confusion. She knew the name DedSec but she couldn’t remember where she’d heard that from. She pulled up the search bar and looked up DedSec with the keyword New Dawn.
This brought up another video which she clicked immediately. A distorted logo reading DedSec popped up immediately, followed by a distorted skull in a hoodie with a disguised voice. “DedSec decided to dig into the Church of New Dawn and found crime and corruption at its core. They Purchased large amounts of personal data to better target their enemies. They may already have a file on you. We will proceed to leak everything we collected to our usual dispatches. Read them. Verify them. You will come to the same conclusion we did: New Dawn is a criminal organization designed to intimidate its own members into destroying their own lives and handing over their savings. But don't take our word for it. We have a celebrity guest.” Nine watches as the video cuts to a very real-looking Jimmy Siska with a distorted voice. “Hello. I’m Jimmy Siska. You probably remember me from a bunch of good movies I made before I was brainwashed by New Dawn and forced to toe the company line. When friends of mine questioned the Church’s cruel practices, they disappeared. When I questioned that, I was taken against my will and locked away. Know that the police are already investigating my claims. And what is the church all about? What's behind door number five? I’ll let my friends in DedSec demonstrate. The video changes once again to a recording of someone destroying what seems to be fake ancient tablets. “DedSec has given you the truth. Do what you will.”
She stares as the screen goes black. “DedSec, huh? Now where have I heard that before?”
She ‘tsks’ before pulling out her phone and dialing a familiar number. She hums to herself until the line picks up. The sound of gunshots on the other side was unsurprising to her. “Solanine? What do you want? I’m in the middle of some business right now. “Now Uncle Aiden, is that any way to speak to your favorite ex-vigilante partner?” She asks as she stands from her desk and walks to the kitchen, looking for something to snack on. “You’re right, I’m sorry Nine. Tell me about your day while I try to escape the fucking police.” He replies sarcastically, making her laugh slightly. “What do you know about this hacker group called DedSec?” She asks, taking a bite out of an apple before immediately spitting it out upon noticing small bite marks littering the outside “Dammit Trjegul! Didn’t I tell you to stay off the counter?” She yells at the lounging Maine coon cat laying on the back of the couch.
“DedSec? What do you want with that bunch?” He asks in confusion. “Apparently, they’re making waves here in San Francisco. They just took down this scummy corrupted church and exposed all their lies to the world. Plus, I’m bored, and fucking with a random hacker group sounds kinda fun about now.” She jokes around as she looks around for something a little more edible. “Well, remember our last mission with T-bone? After I set up the Viruses and went to hack the satellite, they asked if they could insert their code into ctOS so they’d have a backdoor after everything ended.” Aiden confesses as the sound of cop cars seems to die down. “Really Now? Did you let them?” She asks in intrigue “Of course not, they kept spouting some bullshit about being the ‘watchdogs’. They did some fancy ‘Intimidation’ work later about starting a war against big corruption in businesses and politicians. Some real Robin Hood shit apparently.
She hums and nods “Great, thanks Aiden. Text me any other info you get.” She says before ending the call “I’m going to get some groceries!” She calls before whistling “Lyle, Dade, You two watch the house and Stay off the counter Trjegul!” She calls as she takes a moment to grab her bag with her keys and wallet before strapping the gun holster to her thigh. She makes sure she has all her things before leaving the apartment. She heads down to her motorcycle and secures the side caddies for groceries before hopping on and going to the nearest store. The great part about living alone was that groceries were easy and lasted quite a while. As she’s driving through a sketchy neighborhood, she’s nearly hit by a Haum truck. She swerves at the last minute and watches as it drifts into a sketchy-looking alley. She parks her Motorcycle just before the curb before peeking into the alleyway. She watches as the truck pulls into the garage before the door is shut. “No fucking way.” She ties her hair up under her hoodie before pulling up her mask. She doesn’t bother to hide her eyes since she has colored contacts anyways.
Once she is fully covered, she ducks into the alleyway and peaks into the garage windows. She uses her phone camera and holds it up to the window so that she could record. “Trash. Trash… Trash. Ohhhhh, wait a minute!” A robotic voice rang out as boxes were thrown out of the truck again and again. “Hey, tell me I got SOMETHING good.” the second guy pleads as he runs to look into the truck as well. “Nope. Trash.” she watched as yet another box was thrown from the truck. “Ohohooo~ Well, you got THE goods. Is it actually good? It might be evil.” The masked guy raises his hands to the other in a ‘spooky’ way. At the silence he stops and shrugs before turning back around “I don’t know. It is HAUM we’re talking about.” For the first time, Nine noticed the spiked mask flashing different emoticon emotions where the guy's eyes are. “Alright, well I will get this little fucker prepped while you go get us some caffeine.” “Wait, you want me to get you two coffee?” The maskless guy asks in confusion. “No, he’s a robot. I want you to get US caffeine… He’ll take a decaf.” Nine snorts at this but is quickly cut off as she makes what she assumes is eye contact with the masked vigilante. “Shit. Marcus. We’re being watched.” She watched as ‘Marcus’ snapped his head to her. She cusses out loud before taking off running. She hops on her bike and speeds away as fast as possible.
After making sure she wasn’t being followed, she stops at a park away from cameras and takes off her hoodie. While she’s waiting, she calls Aiden once again. “Aiden? I think I got some more info on DedSec. Can you run some facial recognition for me?” She asks as she works on sending the video over to him. “I got it Sol, I’ll get back to you when I find something…” There’s a bit of a pause before Aiden clears his throat “Have you gotten an update?” He asks suddenly, making her smile slightly “Yes, they’re doing good, Aiden. Jacks is an honors student, he volunteers on the weekends at this youth's club, He’s part of the coding and programming club too. We may have a young hacker there. Nicole is doing good as well. She visits Lena often. She’s working at this quaint little diner and seems to slowly be getting back into the dating game. I’ve taken the liberty of running background checks on some of the guys. I’ll send you everything I found immediately.” She says with a soft smile as she grabs her laptop from under her motorcycle seat. “Thanks, Sol.” Aiden says thankfully.
“I don’t mean to pry but it's been years since the public has remembered the fox, Aiden. Why don’t you just go see them?” She asks suddenly. She can almost hear Aiden’s heart pick up in speed at the thought. “It’s too early. The public may not remember the fox, the vigilante… Hell, they may not even give a damn about Aiden Pearce anymore, but I still have enemies looking for a weakness. If I slip up, then I don’t need my family to suffer the consequences.” She stays silent before smiling softly “Family just isn’t in the cards for people like us, huh?” She says sadly as she looks at the screensaver of her parents and her 15-year-old self. “No. That’s why finding a family is important, Solanine. Nothing is keeping us together, but we choose to stay this way. After Lena’s death, you and Jacks were the motivation I had.” Nine hums in response. She knew the answer, but she wished she didn’t have to hear it. “I remember her sitting in while I tutored Jacks. She always wanted to sit in with the cool kids.” She jokes and shakes her head.
“Speaking of family, have you heard from Ray?” She asks suddenly. “T-Bone? No. Last I heard, he had a few fixers on his tail.” Aiden states. “Right, that whole ‘revenge of Default’ fiasco. He said he’d be staying with that Frewer guy to try and take down Blume and hopefully Bellwether once and for all. Clearly, this hasn’t happened, but I also haven’t heard from him. Usually, he texts my burner every time he has to ditch his old one, but nothing has come through. I’m getting worried.” She says honestly as she chews her lip nervously. “Nine, T-Bone’s been around long before you and I. He’s elusive and pops up when you least expect it.” He says with a soft sigh. “Right, I know he’s fully capable of taking care of himself, it's just unusual for him to go this long without a check-in. Can you just try to get a hold of him for me?” She asks, nearly begging “I’ll do my best, Nine.”
