Cold and Colder

Summary:

Obi-Wan drags his boyfriend, Cody, out to try ice fishing after hearing that Cody and his brother Fox (who is dating Obi-Wan's brother Quinlan) didn't know that ice fishing is an actual thing.

Notes:

I used the prompt "ice fishing" from the Summer in Snowtopia bingo

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Obi-Wan led Cody out onto the ice confidently.

Cody followed behind, uncertain. "Are you sure this is safe?"

"Look at all the little ice fishing houses out on the lake! They're not breaking the ice. It's perfectly safe."

Cody nodded uncertainly, looking down. "Are people really using trucks and snowmobiles to get out there?"

"Yep. We're only walking because I know you're skeptical about this."

"...right..." Cody shook his head. "It's so cold. People really do this for fun?"

"Yep. They do." Obi-Wan chuckled and pulled Cody along.

Cody slid after him, startled, and more surprised that Obi-Wan was pulling him along. "Uh..."

Obi-Wan laughed. "Come on Cody, you've only lived here for three years, you haven't even tried sliding on ice before?"

"No! Why would I do that?"

"Because that's what people do? I mean, yeah, ice is dangerous, but as kids we liked to experiment with sliding around on the ice. Makes things a lot easier."

Cody huffed. "Well. We didn't have ice in Texas."

"I know. Come on, Cody. We're almost there. Ready for a weekend of ice fishing?"

Cody groaned. "The whole weekend?"

"Hey, you didn't think it was a thing, so you get the whole experience. Don't knock it until you've tried it."

Cody sighed. "Alright, alright, since it makes you happy."

Obi-Wan beamed at him.

Cody couldn't help but smile back. He did like seeing Obi-Wan be happy. So, he would do this. For his boyfriend.

When they reached the ice house, they found that Quinlan and Fox were already there.

Quinlan jumped up and hugged Obi-Wan and then Cody enthusiastically.

Fox just grunted, shivering. He was dressed far warmer than Quinlan was, and he just couldn't stay warm.

Obi-Wan sat Cody down and pulled out a blanket for him. "Here. I'm going to get started."

He got out a fishing pole as Cody exchanged a commiserating look with Fox.

Quinlan and Obi-Wan chatted about previous experiences with ice fishing, laughing about fond memories of doing it growing up.

"But what did happen when you got too cold?" Fox grumbled.

Quinlan shrugged. "When we were really little we were sent back to warm up. When we were old enough to understand the decision we were making in coming out here, we had to stay out here until our dads were ready to come in."

"Out here?" Cody asked.

"Oh, I never told you? This lake is the one we grew up coming to," Obi-Wan explained. "That cabin is owned by our dads, but they let us come here whenever we want. We just have to ask."

Fox huffed. "So I suppose you're not going to let us go in?"

"Not until we're done!" Quinlan responded cheerfully.

Both Cody and Fox groaned in unison.

Obi-Wan smiled. "Come on, give it a try."

"All we're doing is fishing, but on ice, that's it?" Cody asked.

"Yep!" Obi-Wan grinned. "Isn't it fun?"

"You know I don't like fishing. Why did you think this is a good idea?" Cody groaned.

"Hey, you're the one who brought up winter things Quin and I used to do," Obi-Wan responded calmly. "And when I mentioned ice fishing, you didn't believe me. So, here we are, ice fishing."

Cody sighed and resigned himself to a long weekend.

Three hours after they came out, and after watching Cody and Fox both try it out, Obi-Wan and Quinlan shared a look.

Cody was now shivering as much as Fox was.

"Alright, let's go inside." Obi-Wan helped Cody up.

"What?" Cody stared at him.

Obi-Wan smiled. "You gave it a good effort. Let's go inside and relax."

"...huh?" Cody was very confused, especially after all the stories about Obi-Wan and Quinlan learning the hard way that no they did not want to beg their dads to go ice fishing.

Quinlan wrapped an arm around Fox. "Yeah! Let's go in! I don't think we're going to catch anything today."

Cody decided to just go with it and question later. He was too freezing for anything else.

Obi-Wan helped him across the ice back to the cabin. Once they arrived, he helped Cody out of the winter gear, and then bundled up Cody on the couch to warm up.

Then he went and made himself and Cody some hot chocolate.

Quinlan did the same, only, he and Fox were going to hang out in the loft where the four of them would be sleeping.

Obi-Wan grabbed another blanket to wrap around himself and Cody, then put on Cody's favorite movie as they cuddled.

About an hour later, with Cody finally warming up, Tholme and Qui-Gon arrived.

"Hey Dads!" Obi-Wan waved cheerily. "We got the ice house set up for you."

Qui-Gon eyed Obi-Wan suspiciously. "You hate ice fishing, you haven't been out to the ice house for any reason since you were fifteen."

Obi-Wan smiled innocently. "Cody and Fox didn't believe us that ice fishing was a thing, so we wanted to show them a little bit, but we came in once they got cold."

"Ah, you could have waited for us to give them a demonstration."

Obi-Wan gave them a look. "Come on, Dads. You would've made them stay out there for way longer than three hours. All day if you could. I'm not putting Cody through that. He's still not good with the cold."

"You've been here for college for three years, and dating my son who loves the dangerous winter sports for two of those years, and you can't even last three hours on a decently warm winter day?"

Cody choked. "This is warm?" he asked in disbelief.

Obi-Wan barely kept a straight face. "Thanks for your input Dads, go on, go fishing."

"We need to make sure we're ready for our weekend here first, so we're going to unpack."

"Quin and I can handle the food."

Quinlan's head popped over the edge of the loft. "What are you volunteering me for?"

"Unpacking the food our dads brought so they can go out on the lake faster."

"Oh! Good idea." Quinlan started climbing down.

"And there's our other dangerous winter sports loving son." Tholme gave Quinlan a hug.

Quinlan laughed.

.

Later that night, Cody turned to Obi-Wan. "Obi? You were messing with us, weren't you?"

"Who me?" Obi-Wan asked innocently.

"You were!" Cody accused.

Obi-Wan chuckled. "Maybe a bit," he admitted.

"You hate ice fishing."

"Yeah, it's boring. And we were never allowed to return until our dads did if we went out there with them, so we decided it was better to avoid it."

"Why did you bring us out there?" Cody asked with a sigh.

"Messing with you. Ice fishing is a thing. We weren't really planning on spending much longer than 3 hours out there anyway. That's our limit. Quin and I can't stand it much longer than that."

Cody stared at him. "You seriously just wanted to make a point about ice fishing being a thing?"

"Yep. Our dads love to ice fish, Quin and I prefer the dangerous winter things."

"Which is why you do bobsledding." Cody sighed, shaking his head. "I will never understand why you two like subjecting yourself to the cold."

"Hey, we're moving when we bobsled. Ice fishing is about staying still and that's so much worse."

"I suppose... You really weren't going to force us to be out there all day?"

"Of course not. We're not cruel. We just didn't want you to be watching the time."

"You wanted us to push ourselves, thinking we were going to be out for longer... but you brought us in when you realized we were at our limit..."

"Of course. I know you, Cody. I don't want you to actually get hurt, and we're not doing that again, not if you don't want to."

"Alright." Cody chuckled. "It is kind of funny... This is a nice place. We're staying here for the weekend?"

"Yep. We can do some other snow things, or we can stay nice and cozy here, okay?"

"Alright." Cody kissed him. "You are ridiculous."

Obi-Wan chuckled. "You knew that when we started dating," he teased. "After all, you met me because of the campus wide snowball fight."

Cody kissed him again. "True. You just keep surprising me."
