Chapter 1: Note
Chapter Text
I have revised the story after a while since I have a different concept for the story in mind now. Sorry!
Warnings/Notes:
This is set in the sonic riders universe a few years after. Please note that it might become a pretty dark story ahead (I'm still not sure how dark but be assured I will put warnings in notes before chapters), I just wanted to put in a warning now before anything. This is a yandere story so it will get dark with themes like love, murder and whatnot. Also remember, this is fiction. Yanderes in real life is a big no no.
Not everything will be accurate to the actual lore of sonic riders (Lowkey need to refresh my memory a bit)
This is a sonic/oc fic so if that's not your cup of tea, oh well. I don't mind people imagining their oc in the story. That's low key what i do too lol.
Thank you for reading!
Chapter 2: Underground
Chapter Text
"So why would you want to join this race?" A red echidna asked, his built shoulders squaring up in position as he looked at the brown punching bag that was strung up to the ceiling, his focus was on the bag but also listening intently to the other.
"I'm following you, but I just need a reason." As always the hedgehog would suggest something of interest to the red echidna. With a single step he took, his arm swung and his fist collided with the bag. A deep dent was left, a clear demonstration of his power.
Across the room the blue hedgehog taps his red shoes in thought, sitting on the soft brown couch they had. While he could win quite literally any race he would want, it was more about the thrill and having others to race. He was all about racing on the same playing field but there wasn’t anyone that could match him.
His white gloved hand reached up, scratching his chin in thought,
"Just cuz I thought it'd be fun?" He springs up from the couch, now approaching the red echidna, "Not like we do anything else?"
The other raised his brow with a deadpan face,"You serious? We quite literally saved this city so many times. Heck I even would say the world." He could thank Dr. Egg-man as well as the Babylon Rogues for those times. Though nowadays, the only crime they would fight is sociopolitical or the common petty thief. No in between in their routine of their heroic antics nowadays. They can’t help but get involved in these sorts of things. It was something about their youth and core beliefs that shaped them this way.
Though, Dr. Eggman is currently being held in prison for crimes against humanity/creatures as they say. Those on the council that governed the city approved of his sentence barely a couple years ago when they had caught up with him in one of his plans. Sonic had been there when the arrest was made without the other two. In this particular case, they were trying to shut down a reactor that Eggman had built under the city to blow up. Had they wasted a single second, the city would have evaporated. Leaving them with nothing but death.
Sonic refuses to talk about what happened. Tails had tried to have a one to one conversation with his brother, but in the end he only got a vague, “It’s fine. We don’t have to deal with him.” A somber look had taken over Sonic.
Though 2 years have passed since then and now the hedgehog has revised back to his own self. So it seems.
The hedgehog scoffs, waving him away, "That was a couple of years ago though. There’s no shame in having some fun.”
The echidna rolls eyes at him, "You can run at the speed of light yet have a hoverboard to race. You can go anywhere, Sonic. I truly don't get you."
Sonic lets out a laugh, "well I'm pretty unpredictable. Plus its more of the joy of racing along others. It gets lonely when you're as fast as me." He looks at the punching bag and shivers, "Wouldn't ever want to be on the receiving end of your punches." He points out.
The red echidna scoffs at him, now relaxing from his earlier stance and walking over to the coffee table near the couch, "Don't do anything stupid and I won't." He reached down for the water bottle that was placed on top and took a swing at it.
Sonic thought he was always doing something stupid so it wouldn't be too far-fetched to say that Knuckles would give him a ‘knuckles sandwich’ to say the least.
"No promises." He grinned.
++
The time posted for the race was quite late in fact, Knuckles was a bit irritated at that, regardless, he still tagged along with Sonic. Much to Sonic's disappointment though, Tails had been busy with a new project that he was having head way in to join them. A new collaboration project with a leading tech company, Tails had mentioned. With time moving on they had different events in their lives. Whether that brings new experiences or goals. Nevertheless, the trio always remained strong to their bond. Nothing could ever break that.
They make their way over to an area that was a bit underground of the city, the road tunnels. It might have taken a while for them since it was like a maze of underground highway tunnels with twists and turns, random exits, and dead ends. With a couple dimly lit construction warnings as well.
That is until they could hear a group of voices from ahead, now indicting they were heading in the right direction.
As they entered the brightly lit area, they saw all sorts of riders at the event. Ranging from, what could be said, newbies and professionals. With a quick glance, Sonic could tell which was which. Their mannerisms was a huge indicator but the one factor was the way they carried their hoverboard near them. The most experienced had a lax attitude, fingers barely gripping their tech but was a clear extension of their body. Newbies on the other hand, held their tech like it was the pole that was keeping them alive, afraid of letting it go.
The event was roughly put up with a couple of dull tattered banners raised above to the cement roof. Much of what you would expect of an underground race. Nothing too suspicious, but enough to indicate that you were in the right place.
“You did say that this was an authorized race, right?” Knuckles asks, taking a good look around.
These days, races had to be authorized by the local government that were nearby. Back then races were held whenever someone organized one. Due to the overwhelming amount of them, the government had to place some safety measures. This now led to the authorization seal needed to approve to hold races where one would want. Knuckles wasn’t a big fan of this change, but it wasn’t like he was a fanatic nor wanting to make a career out of it. Though he was a bit more pissed off about the fact that races became monopolized by corporations. With the exclusivity of races, people can now make it their career. Guess he couldn’t blame the Babylon Rogues wanting to cash on it. Worked out in the end, as they were now in their glory so to speak.
Sonic remains quiet, only giving a sly smirk to his partner. He didn’t have to say that it was, he knew Knux was going to join him. Whether it was authorized or not.
Knuckles lets out an irritated huff, a strong grip on his hoverboard, “Well since we are
here anyway. Might as well. You owe me.” He has to say something one of these days about the hedgehog’s antics. It can’t be helped though. After all these years of knowing the little rodent, he knew he can’t quite change his mind once Sonic sets his mind on something.
By the tunnel’s wall a female wolf had been tinkering along with her hoverboard. Last adjustments as she would say. She needs to place among the first ranks since it would guarantee her place among the trainee’s under the Babylon Rogues.
The Babylon Rogues had first been a bit iffy with what happened a couple years ago, but had slowly risen to the top with their expertise in hoverboard racing and practically making them one of the first groups to throw themselves in making this a full time career. Making the public completely forget about what had truly happened years ago and making them love the crew when they’re on screen ready to race with their proud smiles.
It had been announced that they’d be undertaking trainee’s to grow their enterprise of racing groups. Figures, since the public’s number one most viewed/top paying channels were the professional races.
They’d first start looking into the lower ranges, the underground races. It’s been said one of their seekers is here. The whole reason why she is where she is.
Some were here for the same reason she was here. Some had heard the legendary team Sonic was here as well. Granted it was only two, some still wanted a chance to race. She would love a chance to race them as well, but her interests were overtaken by the other prospect. It was quite a stacked race.
“Stop being so nervous,” she told herself, now checking her white bodysuit for any faults. “You’ll make it. Just make it to the top.” She sighed, soothing herself of any doubts before this race. “No biggie.”
The whole reason why she wanted to make it was the same as everyone else.
To survive in this forsaken city of theirs.
A loud ding rang throughout, garnering the attention of those present. A small pastel blue faded colored omochao with yellow accents flew midair, making sure everyone had a view of him. Sonic could tell the omochao was but beaten up with time. By the looks of it, a reindeer had the controls of it so he guessed he must’ve been the organizer. While these robotics were useful, they kept being replaced with the latest one. Tails had mentioned the fast advancement of tech these days. Wasteful, Sonic thinks.
“Racers, take your mark!” It shouted, a radio static like voice sounding out. “The race will commence in 2 minutes! Be sure to be ready!”
All those participating had walked over to the starting line with their boards ready at their side. Sonic playfully tipped his head to Knuckles, who gave him the bird in return when they lined up. They made sure they were a bit apart from each other with people filling in between them. More fun for them to compete like this.
The female wolf had gotten her hoverboard ready in her arms, it was a nice slick dusty periwinkle color with white accents and black edges. She received it as a high school graduation gift from her father. It was her most treasured possession.
A bit tarnish on the edges, showing marks of defeat. She has full trust within it though. It had gotten her a few wins in the past and with the modifications she added, it should hold up.
She could hear the whispers of prayers and excitement among the participants.
It was a rush to even be a rider. The feeling of adrenaline as you close in to the top spot of the race was euphoric. Competition was expected as you get dirty looks or a snarky remark.
In the end, she loved being a rider.
A soft ding was heard. Muscles stiffen.
A second harsh ding. Boards ready.
A short silent pause, that seemed to last forever, filled the tunnel. Contestants were sweating, the sideline crowd watched in anticipation. At actual races, they would have a laser indicator at the start. Let them run for a few seconds before setting off.
Here though, you just had to go with your gut.
The omochao then let out a loud ding.
“Go!”
Participants all ran for their start and soon hopped on their boards. Some tripped, some were too nervous for their own good and managed to keep running, but almost everyone was now racing.
Sonic had no trouble with having the head start, giving Knuckles a salute as he raced off. Knuckles only grunted at his friend’s action. Clearly someone needs to humble him, he thought.
++
As they raced, there were sharp turns, open sections of the underground where parts of the tunnel had collapsed, and jumps to be made. Nothing like back then, but it sure gave them a rush to see who was ahead of who.
Sonic was currently placed at fifth, yawning during the time left. He had left Knuckles one rank ahead of him. He had no trouble catching up to be first, but where’s the fun in that? He wanted to struggle with a challenge or at the very least someone give him some sort of foul play.
Guess the heavens must’ve heard his inner thoughts as a player bumped into him mid race and caused him to lose control over his hoverboard.
“Oh shit, come on!” He shouted, as he directed his attention to his now malfunctioning board. He had it fixed some time ago, so why was it spinning out of control over a simple bump?
Maybe it was the fact he just got it ‘lazily’ fixed when he did trash it some time ago. It’s not like he could bother Tails these days. He could, but he doesn’t bother.
He spotted some debris ahead that would make his landing a little painful but before he could come to a halt, he spun and crashed. His body rolled before impacting with the rocky debris, his board somewhat taking most of the hit.
He groaned in pain, nothing he hasn’t dealt with before. Annoyingly enough. His back was striking with a harsh pulsing feeling like electricity was running through. Sighing out, he rolled and pushed his heavy body up. To relieve him from using force, he leaned against the rocky mound.
He just needed to wait it out. Pain wasn’t anything new to him. He had his run-ins with Dr. Eggman and those battles were ... .something else. It wasn’t like he couldn’t take a hit like this, it was…it just has been a while.
He winced.
Suddenly, his ear twitched at the sound of footsteps running towards him.
“Hey! Are you okay?! Jeez, that jerk!” It was a woman’s voice. He looked up from this miserable display and saw it was a female wolf. Her fur was at least a dark grayish lavender color with her long hair and bangs. She looked like she was a participant at the race by the obvious board she had at her side.
“Oh! You’re, uh, You’re Sonic!” She was now close to see who it was that she had seen fall from a far. While most racers were concerned, they had continued off. It was Sonic. What couldn’t he take? Most citizens had seen him get beat down like a roach and come back fine. So what’s different this time?
She didn’t know why she stopped. She had a race to win. An important one at that, but what’s so harmful about helping the guy out?
“The one and only..” He sighed out, a bit defeated at the fact someone had seen him like this. “Don’t worry, I’m completely fine.” He reassured the wolf.
She took a look at his board that was a bit off to the side, “Not your board though.”
Sonic had hesitated to take a look at it since he would get an earful from Tails when he got back home from this, but it was only stopping the inevitable.
His eyes looked over to see his board somewhat fine, which did surprise him. It was only a booster on the bottom that had popped off, but other than that scratches were the main concern.
“Oh. Thought it was gonna be worse than that to be honest.” He said, relief washing over.
She sighed, what a hero. He was a bit different than what she thought he’d be. He appeared more lively with a “dude atude” personality back then. She’s only seen him a couple of times when his team raced. But she guessed that’s what happens when ‘your arch enemy of forever finally gets locked up’ does to a hero.
“You’re still going to need to fix that booster though.” She walked over to the board, inspecting it. “I can probably pop it back in place, but the wires connecting are kinda trashed.”
“Yeah leave the poor injured guy be, my board needs the most help,” he sarcastically adds, not really meaning the snide comment. “It’s really okay, you don’t need to.”
She laughed, “I bet you don’t want help because you’re Sonic the Hedgehog, Hero extraordinaire.” She adds jazz hands to the ending. “Don’t worry I’ll help you…right after I put this back.” She smiles, taking the busted out piece in her hands. “Plus you said you were fine.”
He snorts, “Guess I did….” He looks over to see the wolf take out some tools from her mini pocket that was placed at her hip. “So I’m guessing you fix boards for a living?” Assuming she was a full time mechanic that liked participating in races in her spare time.
“No, just someone who loves racing.” He could see the smile she had while saying that.
“So you are participating in today's race. I can only imagine why,” He said, throwing his head back to look above to the cement ceiling of the tunnel. It was slightly dark. The only lighting inside were these bulbs to the side of the tunnel, but they were enough to see. Granted if you were paying attention to the road.
She snorted, “that’s none of your concern. I’m sure you’re worried about other things a hero should worry about.” The wires could be put together, for now at the very least. She thought he could bring it to a repair shop to replace them completely when the race is over.
He groaned, rolling his neck, “Yeah well, being a hero is not all it’s cut out to be ya know. People seem to think I'm above the law or something, but I’m not. I’m like everyone else in this city. I have flaws.” Not sure where this sudden confession came from, he hums. “Well as much as a speedy guy can have.” He turns his head over to look at the wolf. Her dark dusty purple hair was loose behind her as it swayed with movement. His eyes seemed to train over them, as though he was watching a pendulum of a clock.
She tilts her head, being careful to put the booster back into its place. “Well if you must know, I’m trying to become a top rider. I have to make a name for myself in these sorts of races first. Everyone starts somewhere.” With a twist she connects it back into place. “I know your ‘Sonic Team’ only races when they want. It’s not like you need to become the top when you already are.” Her hands glide over his blue hoverboard, only wishing to be as fast as him. A sort of pang beats in her chest at the thought.
“Racing just comes natural to me. It was like I was born for the sport. Which in a literal sense, I was.” He shrugs, oblivious to the fact that the girl was burning in envy. “I just go with the wind…but it’s a lot more fun when you have others to join you.”
She picks herself from the ground she was working on, handling Sonic’s hoverboard with care as she turns around to face him, “Well you can take your board to the finish line. I still have a race to win.” Offering him a hand to lift him up and the board held in the other.
He smirks as he takes her gloved hand to lift himself up from the ground, “well there are at least a couple of racers that are ahead of you. Are you sure you can make it?” He takes his board back in his hands as she hands it back to him.
Some time has passed while she was stuck here fixing his board, she assessed she could make it if she took a shortcut. Nothing like a little side path to make the race exciting.
She waves him off, “Totally.”
“I’m guessing you know another way?” Sonic hums.
“Maybe.” She looks ahead, “Well it’s been nice meeting you hero!” She grabs her hoverboard that was leaning against the tunnel’s wall. Still in good condition.
With a smile, she starts a run to jump on her board.
“Till next time!”
With that the stranger leaves Sonic alone. The hum of her board slowly disappearing ahead. He stared into the tunnel for quite a bit before shaking his head from the trance.
“Jeez. I’m probably just a bit dazed from the fall.” He said, now beginning his walk of shame to the finish line. A bit fearful if he used his board, it’ll break on him again. Getting an earful from tails once again.
++
Supposing Sonic was taking his sweet ol time, Knuckles waited for him by the finish. It was located at the other side of the tunnel's opening, just outside a low traffic highway.
Everyone had already left and said their pieces when the race concluded an hour ago. To which he’s still pissed Sonic is taking that much time.
‘I mean the guy could at least run to get here,’ he thought.
He guessed Sonic had another malfunction with his board. Which he’s been telling Sonic to get it looked at professionally by Tails. Not just a quick look.
Knuckles had placed 6th in the race with the winner being a wolf. She had appeared out of nowhere when he saw her ahead of him. Like she has come from the walls or something. He wasn’t going to question it. Not like he was doing this out of pure interest. It was more for fun.
At last, he could see the hedgehog carrying his board come from the darkness of said tunnel into the highway's lights.
“What? Hurt your pride or something?” Knuckles teasingly asks.
Sonic chuckled, “Well, no because my pride is never hurt.” Anytime he loses, he’s always a good sport about it. “So you can keep your loser remarks to yourself.” He smiles.
Knuckles shakes his head, “I can never hurt a nerve with you.” He looks at Sonic’s board and points out, “so I’m guessing it malfunctioned or something?”
“Yeah. Yeah,” knowing he’s going to get reprimanded by the echidna, he starts, “I’ll have it looked at by Tails first thing in the morning. No worries dude.”
To keep the topic away from his mishap, Sonic asks, “So who won anyway?”
They began to walk side by side on the lonely twilight highway. No cars. Just them and the moon.
“Well it was a girl. Dusty dark purple fur. She really had me guessing where she came from because I swore I saw her behind me a couple ranks down. So when I saw her again ahead, I said ‘where the hell did you come from?’.” Knuckles was a bit flustered at first but who doesn’t take secret pathways to take first? He sure as hell has.
Sonic sighed, a bit relieved that his mishap didn’t cost her the rank that she wanted to achieve, “Well, that’s good.”
“Apparently she has a good underground popularity with fellow racers. So it was a given that she’d win a spot with some crew.”
Sonic’s brow raised a bit, “a crew?”
Knuckles chuckled, “Yeah basically from what I heard, a talent agent was there. And not some regular one too. It was Wave. Guess she was undercover.”
A bit surprised, Sonic asks, “Wait so they really did mean it when they said they would seek underground for trainees?”
Knuckles nodded, confirming Sonic’s question, “It’s an investment as they said in their website. Nothing too suspicious from what I could tell. But I saw Wave approach the girl and they went off their merry way. I say that’s a good job well done.” He sighs knowing it’s a long way ahead, he pulls out his phone to look up a taxi. Knowing Sonic wouldn’t risk anything else to his board, it’d be best to take one.
Sonic wouldn’t have thought the Rogues would keep their word, but it was a business venture. He just hoped that it stayed that way. He doesn’t need any evil doer secret plans to harm innocent people. Especially those who trusted the doers with their dreams. He raised his palm to his eye to rub it, clearly mentally tired.
“Yeah well, it’s good to keep a close eye anyway.”
