Chapter Text
Prologue
Due to Mr and Mrs Cameron - otherwise known as Serenity and Kai - being away more often than not due to their jobs as Anthropologists, it was left to either Neakita or Jared to get each other up for school, and as Paul stayed over in the spare bedroom it was another person to get up - and for Jared to keep an eye on, as his twin sister and their best friend have been dating for three years now. As Paul's father (if you can call him that), Tenoch Lahote, was an abusive drunk, Paul was hardly ever at his family's house and might as well call the Cameron residence as his home (which he does).
However, when Paul came down to breakfast on Monday on a crisp September morning of 2018, a concerned frown stole across his face when he noticed neither Neakita nor Jared were downstairs. Neakita hated being late, but then he remembered how angry they have been lately and how they started to feel unwell when watching a film last night, and raced back up the stairs towards his Angel's room first.
"Angel?" Paul asked concerned, knocking on her bedroom door but when he never received a reply his knocks became more frantic until he heard a groan of pain, and immediately raced into the room; however, what he saw broke his heart. His baby girl was groaning in pain as she twisted around in bed trying to escape the pain as she sweated heavily with a fever clutching her stomach and the bed sheets.
"Baby girl!" Paul gasped, racing to the bed and climbing on behind her, taking his twisting girlfriend into his arms as he tried his best to comfort her.
"P-Paul." Neakita groaned in pain, clutching tightly at her stomach while tears ran down her cheeks in a scorching waterfall.
"Shh. Shh, it's okay. Shh." Paul murmured, running his fingers through her damp jet black hair soothingly. "Jared! JARED GET IN HERE!" Paul shouted, terrified for his girlfriend. A second later stumbling feet could be heard in the hall and a moment later a sweaty Jared - face pinched in pain albeit not as much as Neakita - stood in the open doorway.
"Neah!" Jared shouted worried as he saw his baby sister in so much pain. "What do we do!? Paul, you're gonna have to call Sue!"
"You do it! I'm not leaving her!" Paul argued.
"She's MY BABY SISTER!!" Jared roared.
"Yeah so -"
"SHUT UP!! JUST SHUT UP!! BOTH OF YOU SHUT UP!!" Neakita growled so angrily that her eyes flashed an electric blue and her body started vibrating hard enough that it shook Paul and the bed, shocking the three of them as she only ever got that angry during a meltdown but not to this extent. "What's happening to me?" She whispered terrified, tears filling her eyes as she stared at her twin brother then to her boyfriend scared out of her mind.
"It's okay Kita." Jared whispered, climbing onto the bed on the other side of her wrapping his own arms around her while he grabbed his sister's phone and called Sue Clearwater. It was on the third ring that she answered.
"Kita? What's wrong?" Sue asked concerned.
"Hi Sue, it's Jared." Jared replied nervously, running his fingers through his twin's hair as he and Paul held her securely between them as she whimpered in pain. "Somethings wrong with Kita and I. We have a fever, in pain all over, really angry for no reason and shaking, but Kita is worse off. Her eyes suddenly glowed an electric blue a second ago when she got angry. Paul and I don't know what to do." Sue was silent at Jared's explanation for several minutes.
Sue as part of the Tribal Council was in shock. No woman of the Tribe has phased in centuries. Not since Matoaka Cameron née Black. She was Taha Aki's twin sister, the first woman to ever phase. She was the Alpha Luna of the pack while her brother was the Alpha, and who was consequently the Cameron siblings' ancestor. Sharing a look with husband, who had heard everything, nodded as he got on the phone with Sam Uley.
"It's okay Jared. Harry's calling someone who can help you and Kita but first Paul needs to leave. He can stay with us -" She said quickly but reassuring the scared and worried teen only to be interrupted by a growl and not from either of the twins.
"NO!" Paul growled, his own temperature starting to rise with his anger at the thought of separating from his girlfriend when she was sick, scared and in so much pain. There was no way he would or could leave. Everyone in the Tribe and even the ancestors knew that the three were inseparable, the only time Jared and Paul hadn't spoken was when Paul first asked him if he could date Neakita despite knowing how in love Paul was with his twin, Jared was very overprotective of her. But even that had only lasted a few hours until Jared had come around and given his best friend his blessing.
On the other end of the phone Sue's eyes widened at yet another member who was exhibiting signs of phasing and knew Sam would have his work cut out for him with these three due to how inseparable and overprotective they were.
"Okay, okay. Paul, you can stay but you need to keep yourself, Kita and Jared calm and cool with damp cloths periodically, at least until Harry and Sam turn up. When they do you need to listen to them and do exactly what they say. Everything's going to be okay." She reassured them, she felt horrible for them. They were only seventeen, in their Senior year and already Kita had a hard time getting used to sudden changes. "I'll come round with your Auntie Joy, and check on the three of you later and I'll bring some of my special soup. Get some rest until they arrive and I'll call your parents, Jared."
"Okay thanks Sue." Jared replied his tone terse even though he didn't mean it. He just hated that no one was explaining what was happening to him, his twin who was his other half and now apparently Paul. Why there had to be such a big secret Jared didn't know, but what he did know was that the council knew what was happening and refused to say and that whatever it was was happening faster and affecting people quicker and more than one at a time as the first time this had happened was -
"WHY CAN THEY NOT JUST TELL US?!!!!" Neakita suddenly burst out angrily, the shaking intensifying. "THEY KNOW!! I KNOW THEY DO!!! It all started with Sam!!!" She added slightly quieter as she confirmed her twin's thoughts. Before she whispered quietly: "I'm scared Jare, Paul."
"It's okay Neah. It's okay we're here. You're safe." Jared whispered sadly, kissing her heated forehead.
"I know, baby girl. I know." Paul soothed, trying to ignore his own rising anger, shaking and temperature at the state his girlfriend had been left in. It angered him and Jared to no end. "But you're going to be okay. You have Jared and I and you know we will never le-" he was suddenly cut off when Neakita's right arm suddenly snapped causing her to let out a high pitched and painful scream.
That seemed to be the breaking point as one after another her bones were snapping and reforming, her screams rising in crescendo when they heard the front door fly open, bouncing off of the wall making the trio jump startled at the sudden loud noise as they heard two feet pounding the stairs before Sam Uley and Harry Clearwater appeared in the doorway of Neakita's bedroom.
Without wasting a second Sam surged forwards taking Neakita into his arms and ran from the bedroom, out the back door and into the garden by the woods ignoring Jared's and Paul's angry shouts from behind him and Harry's reassuring baritones directed towards the two boys. But the placating words weren't working as despite their own pain, Jared and Paul ran from the house following after Sam shouting profanities at him.
"Kita, you need to stop fighting it and just let it happen." Sam instructed as he placed her as gently as he could on the ground and stepped back several feet, quickly grasping onto Paul and Jared's arms so they couldn't run to the sobbing girl crumbled on the ground and who was glaring darkly at him with electric blue eyes instead of her usual warm brown ones.
Knowing he was going to have to at LEAST explain some things before they phased, Sam shared a glance with Harry before he steeled himself for the backlash that he knew would come. You would think that the Council had learned from their mistakes of inaction from what happened between himself and Emily; but no. Instead it was left to him to explain, soothe and teach the new wolves about everything before the Council would then explain the Legends in more detail than they have done before at their usual bonfires.
The 'incident' as it was now known as happened just shortly after Sam had first phased. He had been terrified - literally out of his mind with fear - and had been lost in the woods for two weeks until Harry found him and helped him change back when a few days later Emily had cornered him demanding to know what was going on, and despite her anger coming from the fear she'd felt for him being missing for two weeks it had turned into a blazing row and the next thing Sam knew he had shifted too close to Emily (who had refused to step back not understanding what was happening to her boyfriend), and had scratched the right side of her face with three of his claws.
He was still so racked with guilt over what happened that he had sworn to himself that he'd never let a new wolf go through what he had. Never experience the crippling fear of hurting those you love, never juggling how to manage a day-to-day life with protecting the reservation on top of that on your own, and never having the guilt he lived with daily. If nothing else he would be their support network in a brother or friend form no matter who they were. It helped that he knew Paul and the Cameron twins and was already protective of Neakita - like all of the males in her life seemed to be - he used to babysit them and was a big brother to the three of them.
He knew how hard it was to have a father who was never there and didn't want to think about how hard it was for Neakita and Jared with their parents being away working in often different countries; with only an aunt who would check on them in between raising her own two kids. As for Paul he couldn't imagine how he felt as his own mother walked out on him at eight years old and a father who would abuse him that he refused to stay there and stayed with Neakita and Jared.
But what scared Sam was if the phasing was happening to those younger and younger, then he feared it would happen to his younger half siblings Alyssa Call (who is a senior with Paul, Leah Clearwater (Emily's cousin), Rachel Black, Neakita and Jared), and his little brother Embry Call who was only fourteen at the moment.
And if their Tribe was in such danger that a Alpha Luna had made an appearance (which was obvious by Neakita's eyes suddenly turning an electric blue) then that could also mean other women of the bloodline (his sister, Leah Clearwater, Jamie-Lee Ateara and Taylor Benally - who was cousins with Neah and Jared through their mother and Collin Littlesea through her mother) could also phase and he dreaded what was coming but also knew that he would make sure they were ready for when the threat finally arrives. Shaking himself from his thoughts Sam turned back to the matter at hand dealing with three teens phasing at once. Joy! Can you tell he's being sarcastic?
"Neah, I know you're scared, that all three of you are scared but I need all of you to listen to me very carefully, okay? I've been through this myself so I know what I'm talking about but I want you to know now that you aren't alone. I'm right here beside you." Sam said reassuringly, hands raised in a placating way. "Okay there's no other way to say this so I'm just gonna say it: All of the Legends are true. The Spirit Warriors, the Cold Ones. Everything. You're the first female to phase since your ancestor Matoaka who was Alpha Luna of the pack and Taha Aki's twin."
"WHAT!!!" Kita shouted terrified. "SO WE'VE JUST BEEN LEFT TO GET ON WITH IT!!" Neakita's shouts turned into howls of pain as her shaking intensified and her bones snapped faster and faster. At the lies they've been told all of their lives or rather the lack of information, seeing the state Neakita was in and not being allowed to go to her triggered the change to act faster in Jared and Paul as they own shaking intensified and their bones started snapping causing them to crumple to the ground as Sam jumped backwards sharing a glance with Harry.
Never have they heard anything about three members turning at the same time.
"Oh for god's sake!" Sam groaned, running his hands down his face as all he could do now was watch and encourage them to give in to the feeling and to stop fighting it. He was definitely going to have his work cut out for him that was for sure.
"I'll call Billy and the others and inform them what's happening." Harry stated, patting Sam on the arm as he returned to the house pulling his phone out as he went. These three didn't deserve this; they were just kids. They didn't deserve to be cut off from their friends, learning control, being forced to juggle patrol, and learning to fight vampires on top of school.
It was happening to younger and younger members and that scared him. He feared what was coming if the magic in their blood was triggered in them at only seventeen. Normally it happened to those who were adults like Sam. He knew the second he got off the phone with Billy that he would go prowling through their records in the History Hall with Joy Ateara, their record keeper of the council and tribe and who was also the elder twin sister to Serenity Cameron the twins' mother. He knew this would only encourage Joy to look deeper and more thoroughly as she loved the twins like they were her own, and would probably get her older brother Rohan Benally to help her.
She - like he and most of the Tribe- never agreed with her sister and brother-in-law leaving them alone to go galavanting around the world. As for Harry himself, he never hated the Cullens more than he did right now and only hoped that they - the pack - didn't keep getting younger but something told him in his blood that they would, and he hated it. His son was only twelve and his friends were eleven and he wished he could spare them from this, but thankfully something told him they wouldn't phase yet but they would within the next two years and he dreaded what was to come.
So all they could do was watch and prepare and support Neakita, Jared and Paul so they didn't drown beneath the pressure of protecting the tribe at such a young age. Especially Neakita as the first Alpha Luna in centuries who would have to deal with co-leading the pack with Sam on top of her struggling to process change due to her Asperger's. Luckily the twins had a brilliant support network in himself, his wife Sue, Tiffany Call, their aunt Joy and their uncle Rohan, and also in 'Old' Quil Ateara, and Billy Black, when their parents were away for their jobs (which was nearly all the time) and they would support her, Jared and Paul through this and they would come out of this stronger than before. Harry would make sure of it.
Harry only hoped - and prayed to the Ancestors - that Paul and Neakita were each other's Imprints as he knew how much they loved each other and they didn't deserve for that to be taken from them too.
