Work Text:
Rain pelted the windows like a battering ram and the wind howled outside. Even the animals were eerily quiet at the farm. It was like a scene out of a horror movie. Harvey paced around the kitchen listening for any return of his partner. Whether it was the wine that was making him more anxious or just his nervous personality he couldn’t tell you. Harvey kept pacing, occasionally going up to the door to look out the window to see if there was any sign of his spouse returning.
He had asked them not to go out. He had practically begged them telling them that he didn’t feel comfortable with them going to the mines in this weather however they had just smiled at him and told him, “Harvey someone has to do it and I’d rather it be me. The farm’s expensive and the only way to keep it going is to go to the mines and besides the elevator was fixed so I won’t even be that long.”
The Farmer had promised that they would be home before dinner however it was now an hour past their dinner. The food was getting cold and Harvey still had his sleeves rolled up because in a sort of abstract comfort that made him see like he was doing something and that the farmer would come after he was done. It was one thing for his spouse to come home late which they normally ended up doing anyway however the fact that they were in the mines terrified Harvey. The mines were where most of the accidents in the Valley happened. Marlon even lost his eye there.
Harvey was sure that his pacing had worn away at the kitchen tiles. The rain and wind didn’t let up and constantly rocked the old house. The house wasn’t badly built by any means as Robin herself had built the vast majority of it, however with its design it still swayed in the wind which seemed to worry Harvey even more. The cat was curled up by the fire sleeping as if it had no worries in the world.
Harvey approached the cat that his spouse was so fond of. “You’re so calm. The life of a cat must be nice.” He said, stroking the top of the cat's head. Its fur was soft and shiny as the farmer had always fed it the produce that was made on the farm. The cat was meant to actually just live off the mice however his Farmer had always had a kind heart to animals and in their words, “How could you say no to that face?”
Harvey kept petting the cat when a frantic knocking sounded from the door. It was as if someone was going to break it down if he didn’t answer. Nothing good came from someone knocking so frantically on a Doctor’s front door.
Harvey ran over to the door and opened it in a quick swift movement. There stood Robin drenched from the rain and her hair a mess. She was keeled over in a panting frenzy.
“Harvey, The farmer-” She continued, still panting. “They were injured in the caves. You need to come now!”
Harvey felt his heart drop.
It was as if his worst nightmare had become a reality. Harvey knew that the farmer would walk from the mines back to the farm with a broken leg without getting anyone involved except him and even then it was only after his prodding that they would even let him look at their injuries.
Robin grabbed his hands pulling him behind her as they ran through the rain. The front door was still lying open as Harvey hadn't even attempted to close it behind him. There was only one thing running through his head and that was the farmer.
What had happened? How were they? Were they bleeding out? Could he save them?
Questions ran through his head in rapid motion as the rain pelted his bare arms. His coat was left behind as they ran through the dirt road. Harvey had never been happier about how close his building was to the farm. But still every second felt like hours as he ran to the aid of his spouse. So many situations ran through his head and each situation got worse and worse as he thought.
Robin bursted through the door dragging Harvey in after her. Demetrius was in there pacing the small waiting room. The first thing that caught Harvey’s attention was the amount of blood that covered Demetrius. It was as if he had just butchered an animal. But still Harvey couldn’t stop now he needed to find out what was happening. Robin continues to drag Harvey through the small doctor’s office.
“Maru I’ve brought Harvey!”
Harvey was thrusted into a room. In one of the beds lay his dear farmer covered in blood. It was as if they had just been constantly attacked again and again. Part of him wanted to just curl up on the floor over this stupid situation however Harvey knew that he needed to get over it and work on.
Maru, The Farmer and him had once had a talk on what to do in these situations as it was dangerous for Harvey to work on the farmer in case he wouldn’t use clear judgement. That;s why if Maru could she was incharge of the farmer if they passed out or became incredibly ill however Maru understood that her medical abilities paled in comparison to Harvey so if something really serious happened Harvey was incharge and Maru was to assist.
Harvey knew he needed to push away all his personal feelings and work. And work he did. He stitched the farmer up, bandaging wounds, casting a broken arm whatever it took. The IV drip was linked up to their arms and an oxygen mask covered their face. Harvey knew that the Farmer would never be the same again. They probably would never be able to make a full recovery and run around as they had once done. However he would do whatever he could to make sure that his spouse may at least wake up.
Harvey worked for hours straight, not stopping to rest. Maru continued on as well both realising that if they stopped they could lose the farmer. After what seemed like an endless night the two doctors fell to the ground. Sweat poured off them and both were sweating like they had just run a marathon but the Farmer was safe and that's all they needed to know. Maru stood up. Her leg’s shaking and her body felt like it might just give out and walked out of the room. She needed fresh air and she needed to see her family. All of them waiting for the news about the farmer.
She pushed through the door and her Mother stood up to see what was going to happen. Sebastian and her father both looked at her eagerly and even Linus who had come along.
“They’ll be fine.”
Robin fell back in her seat and Maru herself let out a sigh of relief as if she had just realised that The Farmer would truly be okay. Maru knew that she should be waiting for the Farmer to at least show some sign of improvement before announcing this; however even she needed to be told that the farmer would be fine.
“Who’s going to stay with Harvey tonight?” Sebastian queried. As much as Maru thought she would be best she didn’t think she would be able to deal with it.
“I’ll do it.” Robin volunteered. “You’s go back home it will soon be too bright to even sleep.” The rest of the family left and only two people were left in the room. The two made eye contact before Linus hesitantly left the room.
Robin walked through the large medical doors that were surprisingly light for their size. The room was illuminated in harsh white lights and a penetrating smell of blood overcame the room. A pile of blood soaked cloths and bloodied bandages lay on the floor and beside them Harvey sat with his head in his hands.
Robin quietly sat down beside him and they both sat silently listening to the Farmer’s slow breaths. No one knew how long each of them sat there until Robin stood up. “I’ll get us something to eat.” She said as she walked away.
Harvey sat there. His head was completely empty but still it felt like millions of thoughts were racing by. Slowly he stood up and glanced at the farmer. He knew that they weren’t out of the danger zone but he knew this was probably as bad as it would get. Harvey leaned on the bed looking at the farmer as they slept. He knew this was all that he could do for now.
Even though the farmer was covered in bandages he couldn’t help but admire how beautiful they truly were, their hair brushed back out of their face, Hair that he had once styled for them and completely messed up due to how nervous he had been.
To think that today could have been the last day he would have ever seen the Farmer terrified him but today wasn’t the end. As he watched their rising and falling chest he felt comforted that soon they would be back to normal day life.
