Chapter Text

Gilbert had started his day like any other, checking his phone to see if he had any assignments or texts from Lexa. As always there are both, and as always, Gilbert looks at what Lexa sent first. He wasn’t checking hers first because he thought it was anything important, she hardly ever sent anything that needed his attention right away that she wouldn’t just call him about, but because she was more important than any assignments.

Lexa

Did you know that if you put 2 grapes in the microwave touching it will explode??????

I didn’t know that

So, I tested it...

It works!!!

Downside... It works

Dw any damage that may or may not have happened due to this experiment has been fixed 😊

Also

Did you know that some metal can actually be in the microwave???

IK!!! It surprised me too

Why do you have to go to sleep at normal times

There's no one to talk too

Nvm, Tiny is up

Imma go bug her now

Byeeee

Looking at the time Lexa had sent the first message and seeing that it was sent at 3 am, about 4 hours ago. It was a miracle that Lexa even functioned during the daytime. Not that she needs to, due to her work as a software engineer, she works from home most of the time. But because she doesn’t have a day job, she often spends her free time hanging out with friends and family who have the day off, including him. They are supposed to meet up in an hour outside of a cafe for some coffee/tea, then a training session at a gym next door. If she went to bed after those texts, she would have only gotten at most 4 hours of sleep, considering it takes about 1 hour for her to get ready and arrive at the meeting spot. But knowing Lexa, Gilbert knew that she stayed up at least an extra hour to play games online with Destiny. Even then she would still show up looking like she got a full 8 hours of sleep.

Jill

Did you at least take a video?

Bc I would pay to see u freak out over grapes exploding in ur microwave

Isn't Conan home?

How'd he react to that

We still set to meet up @8?

Did u get any sleep?

Lexa

Of course!! not

I played some games with Tiny for a couple hours, then remembered I had to finish something for work

But yes, we are still meeting up

AND yes, there is a video, buutttt since you offered, I’ll take $15

Conan isn’t home, he had to go on a trip, so he’ll be gone for a while

Laughing at the fact that Lexa wanted money in exchange for the video even though she makes more money than him, Gilbert checked his other text message from the regulators.

Regulators

Kronos, new assignment.

You are to investigate recent break-ins at local city police stations. Note that we believe that they are committed by a person or people with powers.

This is non-urgent, so you don’t have to start your investigation until your shift starts.

Your normal patrol route is to be covered by the Hero; White Flame.

Kronos

Understood.

Why they bothered giving him a patrol route was a mystery to him, considering they always pull him away for other assignments. He could count the number of times he'd completed his route on his hands. The assignment being non-urgent was good because it meant he could still have his morning off.

Groaning as he got out of bed, missing it already, Gilbert made his way into the bathroom. As he caught his reflection in the mirror, he saw that the pink streak in his hair was starting to fade. His nails seemed to be in a similar state of disarray, chipped and uneven. He decided that after his and Lexa’s training today, they were going to have a spa day.

-------

When Gilbert arrived outside of the cafe where he was supposed to meet up with Lexa, she was already there. Looking put together and well rested, Gilbert on the other hand, the one who really got 9 hours of sleep last night looked like he hadn’t slept in 32 hours.

“Jill! I was wondering if you got a last-minute assignment and forgot to tell me.” Lexa said as she made her way over to him. When she got within arm's reach, she hugged Gilbert with one arm, then handed over his coffee. “Never,” he said, when he tried to take a sip from his coffee he was rewarded with a burnt tongue, “I would sooner fake my death to get out of work for the day than ditch you,” he said after he recovered.

Lexa laughed and took a sip of her tea, “you're laughing as if I’m joking” he said, and at the look Lexa sent him, he added, “Well, I might be exaggerating a tiny little bit, but my point still stands”. “Totally. Anyways, I can’t help but notice that since the last time I saw you, which was far too long ago”, “two days ago” Gilbert interrupted. “Eon's really” Lexa continued as if he never said anything, “that your hair dye had faded, and if you have noticed, so has mine,” she gestured to the small braid of faded pink that curves her face, matched with a brown braid down the other side. “So, I was thinking that we should re-dye our hair after we are done” she concluded, as Lexa took a sip out of her tea, she looked at Gilbert to see if he approved of her idea, she seemed to be doing that more often lately. “You must have lied about your power because I think you're telepathic, or maybe you have 2 powers and it just manifested. Quick, what number am I thinking of!” Gilbert joked, and they both burst out into laughter. “But ya, we definitely need a spa day,” Gilbert spoke as he showed Lexa his chipped nail polish.

The pink, white, and blue nail polish chipped away. He and Lexa liked to paint all but the middle fingernails white and have one middle finger pink, because it is their favorite colour, and the other they paint their least favorite colour. It’s their way of telling when they are holding up their middle fingers how serious they are, pink meaning ‘fuck you (lovingly platonic)’, and for him blue meaning ‘fuck you, and get out of my sight before I deck you)’. Lexa’s ‘I’m going to fight you color’ is green, the poisonous kind.

They continued to talk while finishing their drinks as they made their way to the gym next door. Having to stop to sign in and go through security. Due to the training facility being the most visited gym by Heroes, measures were put into place to ensure the safety of all patrons. “So, what's in store for us today?” Lexa inquired when they entered their usual training room and put their stuff away. “I was thinking some Judo style today, is that good with you?” Gilbert responded as he started to stretch, Lexa, following his lead, started her own stretches. “Anything's good with me Jill, just remember your strength, last time you tossed me like a rag doll!” Lexa exclaimed; Lexa said it like a fact and not an exaggeration of the truth. He did throw her a little too far, but she landed with the grace of an acrobat. Not that he ever taught her anything about gymnastics.

After Gilbert became friends with Lexa when he was 21 and she was 20, he realized that she knew nothing about how to protect herself. Knowing that his job was dangerous and with how close they quickly became, he asked her if she wanted to learn some self-defense and fighting techniques. Lexa was eager to learn everything she could. She had told him that she was always terrified for her sister’s and her safety growing up because of what happened to their mother. Lexa had said that she was scared that one day she would get taken off the streets and no one would know what happened to her, a cold case and a grieving family would be all there was left of her. With his knowledge of missing and murdered indigenous women; Gilbert made sure that no matter what, his best friend and her sisters would know how to protect themselves so that if anyone tried to harm them, they could fight back.

So now Gilbert and Lexa go to the gym once a week to train in all types of self-defense styles and every other week her sisters Bella and Cathleen would join them. They've been doing it for about 3 years, and she's gotten better than he would have ever imagined, considering her initial stance on all things exercise, ‘if it makes me tired then I don’t want to do it’ she would always say when someone asked her if she wanted to the gym or anything of the sort.

------

“Whyyyy does, exercise have to suck so bad?” Lexa asked after she finished her cool-down routine and, without any of the grace she had displayed previously, fell to the floor. “Why do you do this for a living?” Lexa groaned as she stared into the void, the void being the ceiling. “I don’t exercise for a living, I save people,” Gilbert replied after taking a drink of water from his bottle. “Same difference!”  Gilbert got up and walked over to where Lexa lay on the floor. Knowing that this was the only way to get her to get up so they could leave, he dumped some of his water on her face. “Come on, Jill! You do this every time!” Lexa shrieked like a wet as she jumped up to run as far away from him as possible, grabbing her bag and making her way to the door. “It's the only way! If I do anything else, you will continue to try to be one with the floor!” Gilbert yelled back as he grabbed his stuff, and they ran out of the room. “I think I'm getting close!” Lexa yelled back to him, waving as they were about to approach a staff member on his way to clean up the room for the next client. Lexa and Gilbert stopped at the same time and with motions that show they had done this many times before, they reached into their wallets grabbed a $10 bill each, and handed it to the staff member saying thanks, then kept running. Lexa screaming about it was so unfair that he was winning the race because he was taller, so, therefore, he had longer legs.
