It started slow, her reaching for his hand. He lacing their fingers together, indulging in the moment, touching her fingers with his fingertips, tracing circular patterns onto her palm.
“hahaha, that tickles”
It felt surreal after everything that happened. She was here, next to him. Was everything ok?
Was he real?
Tracing and feeling her knuckles, joint by joint. First the distal phalanges, then the medial, proximal, and metacarpophalangeal joints. Following the tendon of her index finger.
When did everything go wrong? How could love end this badly?
“I never wanted to end it like this. I can’t believe I hurt you while loving you.”
“We made our choices Simon. I don’t regret what we had or what I did. It’s not like we knew that we would end up surrounded by magic, gods, and the like, hahaha”
She cupped his face in her hands taking his glasses off and cleaning the tears that started to fall.
He really didn’t deserve her. Why it took him so long to realize he had fucked up?
But then again, he had fucked up many things in his life.
“I can’t believe all of this had to happen for us to change. All the ifs that swim through my head will remain that way, right?”
“I can believe it. We are stubborn…and well, yes. There is no other way. I’m grateful for what we had I… loved you very deeply.”
“I love you very deeply.”
“Simon…”
“Yes, I know, I know. Everything changed in the most notorious and subtlest ways.”
He put space between them, taking her hands from his face and bringing them to his lips planting a kiss on her knuckles.
“Goodbye, Simon.”
“Goodbye, Betty”
He knows he can recover from this.
