However, as the moonlight unveils its secrets, it exposes the chilling truth – the glowing orbs belong to an otherworldly creature, a monstrous werewolf with an insatiable appetite.

Chapter 1: Midnight meeting

Chapter Text

No. Please, no.” Valerie's plea hangs in the air, a desperate whisper against the thudding resonance emanating from the rear of her car. With a deft touch, she eases the brakes and manoeuvres the vehicle to the roadside, its tires grinding against the coarse gravel until the rhythmic thumping ceases.

The deafening silence of the Alaskan woodlands is pierced by the hatchback's idling engine and the blinking orange hazard lights. The piercing beams cutting through the inky darkness like spears of light in a shadowy abyss.

Frustration etches across her face as she yanks up the parking brake and unclips her seat belt. The frigid spring air greets her as she slides out of the driver's seat, her breath forming misty clouds. A disheartening sight awaits her as she paces around the vehicle – the sagging rubber of the right rear tire confirms her suspicion: a puncture.

"Fan-fucking-tastic," she mutters under her breath, her weariness evident. After a month-long stint working in the remote Fort Knox mine, this was hardly the respite she had envisioned. Regret seeps in for not paying more attention during her father's attempts to teach her the art of changing a tire.

Valerie trudges through the muddy slush, retrieving her phone from her backpack. An unsurprised expression lingers on her face as she observes the no signal symbol, prompting her to toss it onto the passenger seat. She scans both sides of the long, expansive road; the last signs of another car had vanished over an hour ago. In the late hours on a county road, it could be hours before another vehicle appears.

Her gaze returns to the deflated tire, and after a contemplative moment, she decides, "How hard can it be?" Reaching across the console, she switches off the engine, leaving the headlights on. With a long, resigned sigh, she pops the trunk and retrieves the spare tire and jack.

After some trial and error, a torrent of curse words, and what feels like an eternity of cranking the wrench, the last nut finally slips free. With a heave, she removes the tire from its mount, letting it roll towards the open trunk.

Standing upright, Valerie catches her breath as she wipes the cold sweat from her brow. A flicker of hope sparks in her chest as two glowing discs crest the horizon in the distance. With a sigh of relief, she strides toward the approaching lights, her arms waving to catch the driver's attention.

Her elation fades as the dim lights fail to grow brighter or larger, maintaining a haunting distance. She comes to an abrupt halt, squinting through the darkness at the mysterious orbs. As her eyes gradually adjust, a chill seizes her as she discerns the large silhouette of a creature, its two reflective eyes fixated on her as it prowls along the road towards her.

The creature pauses as their eyes meet, its intense golden gaze unblinking. In that silent moment, predator and prey size each other up, the tension palpable in the chilly night air. Above, the dappled clouds break, revealing the full moon whose soft radiance casts an eerie glow upon the scene.

Valerie's breath tightens in her chest as she takes in the creature's features. Saliva glistens on its exposed fangs, its jaws parted in a menacing snarl. Its bulky canine face is crowned by two alert ears, while its body appears almost deformed, with elongated limbs and a hunched back.

Her wide eyes stare in terror, her mind racing to comprehend the creature before her. Was it some sort of massive wolf?  A bear? Or perhaps some nightmarish hybrid of the two? The distinction becomes irrelevant in the face of the chilling reality that the hungry beast was eyeing her as its next meal. The revelation sends a paralysing shiver down her spine, her breath catching in her throat as an instinctive fear courses through her veins.

Her body remains frozen in place as her gaze momentarily shifts back towards her car. Panic wells up within her as she desperately judges the distance, questioning whether she could reach the safety of the vehicle in time. Her eyes dart back to the creature, its front paw, raised mid-stride, pauses as their eyes lock once again. Her body tenses, every muscle coiling, legs preparing for the imminent sprint. Each breath quickens, a shuddering rhythm betraying her escalating fear.

Without hesitation, she twists, propelling herself into a sprint as her shoes slip on the gravel. The car looms closer with each thunderous step, but the creature closes the distance with terrifying speed. The thudding of its pursuit echoes in her ears, a haunting rhythm of impending doom.

She skids to a heart-stopping halt, hands wrapping around the door handle. The large beast, a nightmarish silhouette in her side vision, is almost upon her. With a desperate yank, she pulls the door open just as the creature lunges. The door hinges snap from the car frame as the massive form dives into it, knocking her to the unforgiving ground. The beast's weight falls upon her, pinning her beneath the twisted door.

She squirms frantically, her hand clawing at the loosened asphalt beside her. Panic surges as the creature regains its footing on the seesawing door crushing her chest. Her fingers find purchase in the gravel, and with a desperate instinct for survival, she hurls a handful of it into the creature's snarling jaws. It yelps and staggers backward, momentarily freeing her from the crushing weight.

Gasping for breath, Valerie summons every ounce of strength to push the door off herself and scrambles unsteadily to her feet. She stands there, dumbstruck, staring at the once secure refuge that now gapes open before her.

Her gaze flickers to the recovering beast, still pawing at its eyes to dislodge the debris. She shifts her attention to the looming forest, its towering pines becoming a beacon of hope in the darkness.

The notion of climbing one of those colossal trunks to escape the relentless predator drives her forward. She staggers around her car, clutching her aching ribs. The looming woods beckon, and her pace quickens, fuelled by the adrenaline surging through her veins. Every rustle of leaves and crackle of twigs amplifies the dread behind her, urging her onward in a desperate bid for survival.
