Chapter 1: [ THE SOURCE ]
Chapter Text
"The votes are cast. Those who receive a marshmallow can stay."
Lewis spoke, looking at the competitors. An intern leant over, and whispered in his ear. In response, Lewis sighed in annoyance.
"And... this season... one player will receive a very... 'special' marshmallow. This marshmallow is one that you do not want to eat. Whoever gets the marshmallow of loserdom is out of the contest."
Another intern walked over, except this time, he was in a bright, yellow hazmat suit, and was holding a box with a radioactive symbol on it. He flipped it open, and revealed that the 'special marshmallow' was a glowing, hazardous, green marshmallow. Lewis blinked in surprise, edging a step away from it.
"That, uh... means..."
He cleared his throat quickly.
"It means that you can't come back, ever. So... the following plays are safe - Scott... B... Lightning... Dawn... and Sam. Which means the marshmallow of toxic loserdom goes to..."
Lewis glanced in between Staci and Dakota. There was a very clear contrast between how they acted. Staci was nervous, no, scared, even. Dakota, however, was distracted, texting on her phone, and snapping a few photos of herself. All of a sudden, Adam, the only intern younger than seventeen, leant over, and whispered to Lewis.
"Twenty bucks this thing turns 'em mutant."
Lewis quickly widened his eyes in response.
"Wha-?!"
Regaining his composure, he slapped Adam across the back of the head, speaking through gritted teeth.
"Shut your damn mouth, kid."
He cleared his throat, and turned to the contestants again.
"Ahem! The marshmallow goes to... Staci!"
Hearing this, Staci sighed in defeat.
"Aw... but, I was doing so good!" The intern, not really caring, threw the marshmallow towards Staci.
Instead of catching it, it hit the side of her head, and dropped to the floor with a soft thud. Lewis, who wasn't paying attention to Staci, continued speaking, trying to stick to the script without sounding like an insane person.
"We, or, uh, rather... the producers... came up with a brand new and improved way of..."
He paused, raising a brow. Lewis heard a deep growl behind him, and as soon as he turned his head, he figured out what exactly made the noise.
"Staci... ?"
He uttered out quietly, looking up at the (now) eight foot girl. Staci had become far from recognizable. Her arms had multiplied into several, and morphed to resemble a spider's legs. Not only this, but she had grown sharp fangs through her face, and a few eyes sprouted around her original two. Her legs had now also grown at least a foot, and the tips had become pointed, and needle-like.

Chapter Text
At that moment, every single intern made a run for it.
“Well, looks like you owe us all twenty bucks, Lewis!”
Adam nervously said, shouting back to Lewis, who was frozen in place, staring up at the mutant. He didn’t think to turn his head.
“Uh, speaking of us all… MATEO, GET THE HELICOPTER!”
The eldest, Josh yelled, and Lewis’ assistant was not hesitant to get all the interns off the island.
Now, it was just Lewis, the contestants, and… ‘Staci’. She had currently set her focus on the ruckus the helicopter was making. After it was far enough away that it wasn’t audible anymore, she quickly turned her head to the competitors, causing them all to widen their eyes. Lewis furrowed his brows, taking a small step back.
“Guys…?”
He hesitantly took his gaze away from Staci, and looked at everyone else. They were just as unsure and fearful as him.
“W-We should… probably…”
Lewis tried to speak, but there was a lump forming in his throat. But, he didn’t need to finish his sentence, for everyone else picked up the message, and immediately made a run for it. Chaos ensued at first. They were all scrambling over each other to get away. However, Lightning picked up Cameron, and put him on his shoulders.
”I’ll save you, little girl!”
Cameron was waving his arms around, drastically trying to keep his balance, so he didn’t tip both him and Lightning over at the same time. Scott, Mike and Zoey all grouped together, all equally as scared. Sam could barely catch up with Brick and Jo.
“Watch it!”
Anne Maria forced her way past Dakota, while Dawn anxiously watched. Lewis didn’t know what to do. He was terrified. So, he did the only thing he could… he ran. He didn’t want to turn to check on the others, he was so concerned about himself, and he felt absolutely horrible for it.
Sam pathetically waved his arms around, calling to the competitors far, far in front of him. He didn’t think to check on the ground, and he instantly tripped over a rock, both losing and smashing his glasses in the process. As he fell, he let out a loud scream, which attracted the attention of Staci.
Brick also heard it, and turned his head, fully prepared to go back to help Sam. Before he could, Jo swiftly grabbed his wrist, and prevented him from doing so.
“Hey! What do you think you’re doing?!”
She practically ordered a response from him. With a grunt of effort, he pulled his wrist away, and responded to Jo.
“What am I doing…? What I’m doing is leaving no man behind! You saw that thing. He is going to DIE if we don’t do something.”
They then heard a very loud crunch emerge from the darkness of the forest. They both widened their eyes in fear, before glancing at each other, and decided it was safer to just leave Sam, and carry on together.
Lightning was still carrying Cameron, but slowed down eventually. Cameron looked around in a small amount of fear.
“How are you not freaking out?”
He curiously asked Lightning. Lightning completely forgot that Cameron was on his shoulders, and released his feet, so he could confidently fold his arms.
“This is just some special effects stuff. You can’t fool the Sha-Lightning!”
He turned his head to find Cameron on the floor, as a result of being dropped.
“Sha-whoops!”
Cameron groaned, and propped himself up.
“Yeah… I guess that would make a lot more sense than what’s actually going on, but… it looked so… so… real.”
Lightning held out a hand to Cameron, and he took it, with a small smile.
“Uh… thanks!”
“No problem, girl!”
Cameron furrowed his brows, and tried to correct Lightning on his mistake.
“I’m… not a girl, Lightning.”
Realising what Cameron meant, except being completely wrong, Lightning nodded, and placed his hands on his hips.
“Oh, sorry! The sha-Lightning is a supporter of the LGBT community!”
Cameron rolled his eyes, and face palmed, completely unaware of what was watching them from the shadows.
Perhaps if Lewis did turn to check…
Sam wouldn’t have been the next victim.

Chapter Text
Dawn, Dakota and Anne Maria were all walking together, trying to find their way back to camp, or at least some place safe. They didn’t realise that something… or, rather… someone was following them. It wanted to get their attention, but it wasn’t exactly fluent in the human language anymore…
So, doing what it had adapted to do… it barked at them. Obviously, this startled them, to some degree. However, Dawn placed a hand in front of its face, causing it to stop. Anne Maria and Dakota turned around, quite shocked to see that the ‘thing’ was actually Ezekiel Miller.
He had turned into a mutant.
Dakota released a high-pitched shriek, under the belief that Ezekiel was just like Staci, and was out to kill them. Anne Maria, on the other hand, wasn’t too scared. In fact, she was judgy.
“Are you kiddin’ me? That thing looks like my sister’s dog. That ain’t no compliment, either. That thing is inbred.”
Ezekiel sat in front of them, but Dawn wasn’t so judgemental. Her aura-seeing abilities did come in handy, this time. She reviewed Ezekiel’s aura, before turning to the other two girls.
“His aura is rather green… I believe we should bring him with us…”
Ezekiel was suddenly very friendly at the sight of this. Anne Maria glanced at Dakota, and they shared a look of uncertainty. Deciding to take charge, Anne Maria furrowed her brows, and pointed at Ezekiel, quite rudely.
“No way, toots. You saw that spider… person… thingy. Those things are out for blood.”
Dawn ignored her warning, and proceeded to approach Ezekiel, carefully observing his demeanour, to see whether he’d attack. He did not. She hummed in thought, before responding.
“Well, yes, but… he seems not to be tainted, like the poor, tortured arachnid…”
After a long pause of hesitation, Anne Maria sighed, and turned away, with her back to Dawn.
“Fine… but keep it on your side, hun.”
All three of them came to a cave, which, upon first glance, was completely pitch black. You couldn’t see further than a few centimetres past the entrance. While Anne Maria and Dakota were about to walk in, Dawn wasn’t too sure.
“Uh… I don’t think that this cave is-”
Anne Maria cut Dawn off, folding her arms, and rolling her eyes.
“So, you let the living Halloween decoration in the group, but draw the line at a spooky cave…? Tch! Not a chance, toots.”
Dawn narrowed her eyes, looking further into the cave. After a few seconds of her eyes adjusting, she saw two faint, pale dots. They grew larger, until she discovered that it was Sam, and he was not… ‘Sam’ anymore.
He instantly charged her, using one of his large, dismorphed claws to impale her, directly through the stomach. She ‘died’ on impact.
Meanwhile, Scott, Zoey and Mike had returned to the camp, and they all entered the first cabin they saw, which happened to be the Maggots’. Zoey decided to go in front of them all, and turn the doorknob.
“BED!”
Once she opened the door, Scott pushed his way past, and leapt into one of the beds, getting very comfortable. Zoey also took one of the beds, lying down with a dejected sigh. Slightly concerned, Mike approached.
“Zoey… are you okay?”
She sat up, facing him. She tried to keep herself calm, but deep down, there was a large amount of panic and fear building up.
“People are dying, Mike.”
Mike avoided her gaze, looking off to the side.
“I- I know… I’ve… kinda been trying to not think about it.”
He stuttered out, pushing the fear back down into his system, hoping that his alters could help him through the day, if not the whole event. Usually, when it came to something that could physically harm Mike, the one to shelter him from it was Mal. But, ever since juvie, he had gone completely dormant, and the other alters weren’t exactly formed to deal with it.
“Um… also, aha… kind of off-topic… what’s your opinion on D.I.D?”
He questioned, rubbing the back of his neck anxiously. Scott raised a brow, and pushed himself upwards, from the bed. He didn’t exactly grasp the concept.
“You did what?”
Laughing gently, Mike shook his head, correcting Scott.
“No, no, I didn’t… uh… okay, so… I’m not really sure how to expl-”
Before he could finish his sentence, Chester fronted, cutting him off, quite confidently. Strangely, he was quite enthusiastic to be explaining D.I.D to a person other than someone at home.
“But I can, ya hippies!”
With a small laugh, he sat down on the bed, and started ranting about the disorder, and explaining it in terms he thought that someone like Zoey or Scott would understand. A few minutes later, the cabin door creaked open, causing all three of them to stop, and turn their attention to the door.
Lewis walked in, and it was clear he had just recently been through a panic attack. His eyes were red and slightly puffy, his hair was messed up, and it looked like he had been pulling on it. Not only that, but he was trembling, and it was incredibly noticeable, even from a distance.
“Lewis!? Oh my gosh, are you okay?!”
Zoey quickly spoke, rushing up to him. He didn’t care to respond verbally, but gave her a subtle nod. Seeing this, she sighed in relief, but brought up the question she’d wanted to ask him since she spotted him.
“Lewis, um… what… what’s going on?”
Furrowing his brows, Lewis looked at the floor in thought, before ignoring her, and walking past, completely ignoring the fact that Scott and Chester still had their eyes on him. He opened one of the dresser drawers, took out a phone, and headed back to the door. Before he opened it, he called someone, and held the mobile device up to his ear.
“Dad…?”
He muttered, finally opening the door, and leaving.

Chapter Text
Brick and Jo were still walking aimlessly through the woods, searching for Camp Wawanakwa. However, Brick seemed to know his way around, if only by a small amount.
“I think we’re almost to the cabin, if I remember right…”
Jo was thinking about something else, and it had been swallowing her whole for the whole journey. It was only now that she decided to speak up on it.
“Hey, Brick…?”
“Yes?”
“…Do you think that we’re gonna die here?”
Brick immediately tensed up at her words. He furrowed his brows, and quickly turned his head in her direction.
“What?!”
With a sigh, Jo looked down at the ground.
“You heard the same thing I did… the crunch, Brick. I don’t want to die here…”
Brick grabbed Jo by the shoulders, and forced her to focus on him. He didn’t want her to think such things so early, which is why he was so forceful with his words.
“Now, that is no way to think, cadet! We are going to get out of here!”
There was a brief moment of silence in between them. Jo was slightly surprised to hear what Brick had just called her. Releasing a breath, she put on a facade, and smugly raised a brow.
“Cadet, huh?”
He paused, before nodding confidently.
“Mhm! It’s… uh… it’s something I used to call my pals in military school.”
After that, there was another pause of silence. This time, it was practically deafening. It took at least twenty seconds for either one of them to start talking again. It was Brick, this time.
“I guess I was prepared for a situation like this…”
He furrowed his brows, looking off to the side, slightly unsure of how Jo would react. She blinked, tilting her head.
“Why are you saying that like it’s a bad thing?”
She turned her head to the left after getting no response. After spotting the cabins, which they’d been tracking down for around two hours now, she widened her eyes in happiness. Quickly grabbing Brick’s wrist, Jo pulled him towards the cabins.
“Come on!”
At that same moment, Lightning was charged by Staci. However, due to his build, the only thing she had managed to do was bring him to the ground. He struggled, but pushed her away from his face, so he didn’t get attacked. Cameron, who was watching this, terrified, called out to him.
“L-Lightning!”
He evaluated Staci quickly, before noticing a crack on one of her arms that she was using to prop herself up, over Lightning. He furrowed his brows, considering something, before ultimately deciding to act on it. He punched the cracked arm, and it instantly snapped in half.
Staci released an ear-piercing screech, and tried to do something about her arm, but since she was a literal mindless being, there wasn’t much she could do. This gave Lightning some time to flee, but he completely forgot to take Cameron with him, this time.
…Which also meant that Staci could pinpoint him directly as the attacker. She leaped onto him, immediately slicing him in half.

Chapter Text
Anne Maria and Dakota were walking together, after escaping the attack from Sam. Unfortunately, Dawn was the only one to come out of it, dead. Ezekiel was still by their side, however. He had some reign over the mutant animals on Camp Wawanakwa, but the mutant humans? Not much luck, there… Because of this, Dakota didn’t see much use in his presence.
“Why are we bringing the goblin, again?”
She asked, glancing in his direction, a slight amount of disgust in her eye. Anne Maria rolled her eyes, and placed a hand on her hip, as if it were obvious.
“Well, ‘cause Dawn said he was clear. Ain’t ever gone wrong with her.”
Dakota scoffed, and folded her arms at Anne Maria’s logic.
“One… we only just met her yesterday, and… two… she literally just turned into a plant monster, like, a couple of minutes ago.”
Anne Maria didn’t like that, and immediately began to get defensive over Dawn’s death.
“Why are you actin’ like she did that willingly, blondie?!”
Dakota turned her back to Anne Maria, giving her a quick glare.
“Don’t get your panties in a twist, just because I have some common sense, you-”
“QUIET!”
The two of them were interrupted by Ezekiel, who had worked up the strength to say a singular word. They both looked at him in shock, but he looked as if it were no big deal, and he was just tired of their shit.
It had been twenty minutes since Lewis sent his tenth voicemail to Chris. Yet, he still hadn’t called back, yet.
“Come on, Dad…”
He muttered with a large sigh, turning on his phone again. He was fully prepared to send another voicemail, if he didn’t call him in the next few minutes.
…
…
…
Those few minutes had passed, and… nothing. Releasing a breath, Lewis picked up his phone from the bed, and stood up. He called Chris again, expecting it to go to voicemail, again. Unsurprisingly, it did. Lewis furrowed his brows, now annoyed. He didn’t even wait for Chris to pick up the phone, he went straight to voicemail, and got very direct.
“Chris. I’m sick of begging. If you don’t come over to this island, I’m gonna fucking die. I don’t know what else you want me to say. I’ve had three fucking panic attacks in the past fourty minutes. I can’t bring myself to eat. I’m constantly on edge. If you really want me to say it, fine. I fucking NEED you right now.”
He took a deep breath, and left a final note.
“If you really aren’t gonna do anything… just say it. I promise, it’ll hurt less than if you left me hoping.”
Hanging up the phone, Lewis dropped it on the table, groaning. He thought for a second, looking at his surroundings. He then had an idea that may have helped him survive just a little longer, even if it was only a day.
Brick and Jo were in the cabin with Mike, Scott, and Zoey. They heard a creak at the door, and whilst Zoey, Scott and Mike assumed it was just Lewis again, Brick and Jo were slightly nervous. They all looked out the door, and immediately freaked out. Unfortunately, Brick didn’t spot the mutant until it was a centimetre away from his face.
Somehow, they all managed to escape without getting attacked. Zoey and Scott were separated from the rest, and were running together. However, whilst running, Zoey twisted her ankle, which caused her to trip, and fall to the ground. Scott, only concerned for his own life, didn’t think to help Zoey, and sped off, whilst she called his name.
“S-SCOTT!?”
She yelled, whilst Cameron only got closer to her. Before she could pick herself up, and get away, he attacked her, and sent her tumbling into the lake.

Chapter Text
B had allowed Lewis to come to the junk yard with him, knowing his true intentions. Usually, he’d never let people mess with materials he could possibly need for his devices and builds, but Lewis was an exception. Not because he was the show’s host, but because Lewis had told him what he was going through, and what he wanted to do in the junk yard.
Lewis wanted to find a weapon, or something he could use to build his own weapon. He didn’t care for armour, plus, most of the things there wouldn’t exactly fit on Lewis’ body. B was busy digging through a pile of trash, finding pieces of wood that he considered useful.
Both Lewis and him heard a creak, and almost immediately, Lewis rushed in front of B, hoping to defend him from whatever was coming their way. However, they soon found that it was just Lightning. Lewis groaned, and furrowed his brows, going back to what he was doing. Lightning looked over to B, shrugging.
“Sha-what? What did I do?”
B simply shrugged at him in response. After a few more minutes, Lewis found a dangerously sharp harpoon. He furrowed his brows, before ultimately deciding to take it, as well as a few other materials, hoping to make himself another weapon, or two. After a moment of consideration, Lewis tested the harpoon on himself.
“Hmph… that’ll do…”
He muttered, wiping the blood from his wrist. He thought to himself for a moment, wondering what Chris would think if he saw him in this kind of state, but shook his head quickly, erasing it from his head. At this point, he could care less about what Chris thought.
Anne Maria, Dakota and Ezekiel were passing through the junk yard, in an attempt to get to Camp Wawanakwa. They were still wandering around. After Dakota had spotted Lewis, she had practically squealed in his ear.
“Oh my God!”
Startled, he turned on his heel, instantly pointing his harpoon at her. Of course, she didn’t have the best reaction to that… and neither did he.
“Whoa! Just… like, chill!”
He blinked, before standing up properly.
“What the fuck is your issue, Dakota?! Don’t just sneak up on someone like that! Especially at a time like this! Are you fucking insane?!”
Lewis scolded her, to the point where Anne Maria had to intervene, and pushed them apart. She wasn’t too pleased with either of them, to be fair.
“Hey, hey! Don’t stab her, and don’t scare him! How hard’s that, eh?!”
Dakota and Lewis both narrowed their eyes at each other, and actually listened to Anne Maria’s orders. Lewis wasn’t used to having someone younger than him put him in his place, but when they did, he often felt inclined to follow.
All the ruckus they were making had attracted some unwanted attention. As a matter of fact… Dawn’s attention. The things she was saying were impossible to make out, until she slowly walked closer. It was only then that Lewis noticed her, and immediately pointed the harpoon in her direction, whilst the others ran.
“Why are you running…?”
Dawn mumbled out, taking another step forward. Lewis stood his ground, furrowing his brows. Sure, he was tense, he was scared, he was accepting the fact he was about to die… but that was the whole point of this trip.
“I thought we were friends… are we not? Why are you threatening me…?”
She questioned, tilting her head. While the others were terrified, Lewis knew that this… creature was never Dawn in the first place. As soon as it grew consciousness, it was out to kill. It was trying to trick him, but he wouldn’t fall for it.
“Why are you doing this? Tell me. Please.”
She repeated the word, ‘please’ over and over again, and was basically inches away from Lewis’ face, at this point. He narrowed his eyes, trying to appear as if he wasn’t scared. But, the trembling all over his body, and the sweat on his face told a whole different story.
After a moment of hesitance, Lewis took a deep breath, and finally attacked her. He slashed at one of the large venus fly traps sprouting from her arm, immediately cutting it off. Instead of the orange blood the mutants often contained, she didn’t bleed… at all. Lewis immediately widened his eyes in response to this, wasting no time in making a run for it.
What Lewis had hit was not actually a body part of the mutant. It was only a bait, for overly confident people like him. People that thought they could survive… which told him everything he needed to know.
Whilst he was running with Ezekiel, Dakota and Anne Maria, Dawn used one of her thorn-covered vines to wrap around Dakota’s arm, pulling it back. Dakota yelped, but Anne Maria had a quick reaction, pulling her arm away, so that nobody would be pulled into Dawn’s trap.
Although, in the process… Anne Maria’s eye was punctured, leaving Dakota, Ezekiel and Lewis to escape without her. Dakota had tears in her eyes from the encounter, whilst Lewis and Ezekiel glanced at each other, unsure of what to do.
