Chapter Text
Tim sat on the edge of his bed in Titan’s Tower, his mind going like a hamster on a wheel, a mile a minute and getting nowhere. In his hands he held the note left for him by Red Hood! It was a serious security breach that he had gotten in here at all. Obviously Tim knew he was smart, he had been Robin before Tim after all, you couldn’t do that job without being smart as hell and strong as heck. But he had upgraded the security himself when he joined the team, no one should have been able to get into the tower, let alone into his room to leave the note.
At least it wasn’t a bad note? In fact it was… nice, it was a kind offer. They had to know that if he did this he would spy, he wouldn’t even be able to help it because he’d always had a detective's mind, yet still they offered.
Of course there was always a possibility that it was a trap of some type but Tim really didn’t think it was. Jason had proved he could get into the Tower, if he wanted Tim dead or kidnapped he could have just done it.
He should talk to his team about this, he should talk to Bruce about this, but for the moment he just held the note. Robin had always been his hero, sure it was Dick he’d first recognized because of the Flying Grayson connection, but Jason had been His Robin. Tim had idolized Jason, and been completely devastated when he died. Ya he had become Robin to help Bruce, but it was to memorialize Jason as well.
He knew that Jason wasn’t the same as he’d been before his death, but… while he was dead Tim had gotten used to thinking of him like a brother. A part of him desperately wanted to take this note at face value, to forget all about the violence, and the crimes, and just take the olive branch and bond with his childhood hero. But he was going to be smart about this.
He was going to go, of course he was, but he needed to put safety measures in place and some sort of plan. Though he probably still wasn’t going to tell B about it, he was overprotective and would grill Tim for any bit of information he managed to glean, and if he wanted any real info he would have to do a long con. Best he could do right now would be to have Superboy listen in, set up a code word, and have Impulse ready for an extraction if needed then… well he’d tell Batman when he needed to.
------------
It took about a week to talk Superboy into letting him go but it wasn’t exactly hard to set up as minimal of plans as he had, including wearing a hidden wire to record whatever happened. As long as it worked, Tim had heard tech had a habit of messing up around Hyena if he didn’t want them working.
He didn’t bother thinking of an excuse, he didn’t think he needed one. Wanting to get to know them would be enough, especially if he was going to rely on them for anything in the future.
So, feeling tense and keeping to the shadows he entered Crime Alley on a slow night with his friends behind him, figuratively speaking. He moved a bit deeper in, grappling up to the roof of a building, feeling a little lost and listless. He did know vaguely where to find these two, but Crime Alley wasn’t a small place, and now that he was in their territory he didn’t know where to go, it’s not like they knew where Hood and Hyena lived, or their base of operations.
It seemed like he didn’t need to though, because while he was standing on the roof thinking he saw someone coming, leaping from one building to the other with reckless abandon. They weren’t even using a grapple as they free ran and made jumps Tim was pretty sure should have been impossible. Tim knew who it was before they were close enough to see detail because Hood still used a grapple, the only one who acted like that was Hyena.
Sure enough Hood’s lover skidded to a halt across the roof in front of Tim, grinning to the point he could see it a little past the muzzle he wore. He didn’t have any weapons out, not that that meant anything, half the time Hyena forgot to use the clawed brass knuckles he carried and fought with bare hands. Tim was tense, ready to fight or flee but Hyena was not, he seemed relaxed and didn’t approach, keeping his hands visible.
“Hey there little birdy, what can I do for ya?” Hyena asked, he didn’t have a Gotham accent but it was a little hard to tell where exactly it was from.
“I got Red Hood’s note. I just wanted to talk, introduce myself properly and meet you before I decide to take you up on any of the offers.” Tim said honestly.
“Of course!” Hyena agreed, pulling his phone out of a hidden pocket on the inside of his cropped jacket. “I’ll text Hood, ask him to pick up some food for us and we can have a little rooftop picnic and chat for a bit. How’s that sound?”
“Sounds good,” Tim said, not sure why he was surprised by the offer.
“Any requests? The lifestyle sure builds up an appetite huh? And I certainly hope you’re still growing,” Hyena teased, cackling at Tim’s expression of indignation. Hyena wasn’t that much taller than him!
“Coffee,” He requested, finally relaxing a little.
“Hmm,” Hyena sounded judgmental as he tapped at his phone. “Fine, it’s your bone density that’s at stake not mine.” He pressed send, waited a moment and his phone dinged with a reply. “Great, he’ll be on his way soon, with picking up food he’ll probably be about a half hour,” Hyena said, pocketing his phone again and flopping down, as if the rooftop was a soft bed. “I know it’s probably Hood you really came to see but is there anything I can tell you in the meantime? Let’s stick to small-talk though huh? I know how you bats and birds are, but I also know you’re wearing a wire, and I’m not interested in spilling my guts.”
“Alright, ya that’s fair. Hood mentioned in the note that you know a lot about astronomy?” Tim mentioned, finally sitting down with his legs crossed as well.
“Oh ya, I was totally obsessed with it for most of my life, I wanted to be an astronaut when I was a kid and learned everything I could about space and engineering,” Hyena confirmed casually.
“This is a long way from being an astronaut,” Tim pointed out.
“Ya, well, things don’t always go the way you plan you know? Sometimes you get kidnapped by mad scientists and experimented on to the point you go a little around the bend,” Hyena snickered. Tim wasn’t sure if he was being serious, or self referential, or not.
“Riiight, well, what are your favourite space facts then?” Tim asked, just to pass the time really. Hyena brightened immediately and was happy to start sharing a bunch of random facts.
It ended up in a back and forth of fun facts, aerospace vs chemistry and both of them could go shot for shot when it came to engineering. Tim realized, a bit belatedly, that Hyena is way smarter than Tim had given him credit for. That was disconcerting but… if they ended up getting alone Tim thought he could have a lot of fun tinkering with him.
“Incoming,” Hood broke into their conversation, warning them before he landed on the roof so he wouldn’t startle them. “Hey there Timmy,” He said as he walked over to crouch next to Danny, handing him a few bags of batburger and a tray of drinks before taking off his helmet. He was wearing a domino underneath it but it wasn’t like Tim didn’t already know his identity. “Got your coffee, I bet if you took off that domino your eye bags would be nearly as dark as the mask. Never enough time to sleep between school, social life, and nightlife.” Jason said, taking the tray of drinks back from Hyena, who promptly started digging through the bag with his now free hands, and handed the coffee cup to Tim.
“If you drop out of school to play hero I will personally kick your ass,” Jason said pointing at Tim warningly.
“Uhhh,” Tim sounded, shifting a little awkwardly because he couldn’t deny he had already thought about dropping out. He looked down and took a sip of the coffee, which wasn’t great, but hey. “Why do you care?”
“Neither Hyena or I got to finish school because we died before graduation,” Hood said simply, which was a punch in the gut, and new information about Hyena. “I want better for you.”
Tim didn’t know how to respond to that.
Hyena finished rummaging through the bag with a little yip of delight and started distributing the food, handing Hood a bag and taking a box of chicken wings, a burger, and some fries for himself before handing off the rest to Tim. “Looks like Hood didn’t know what you wanted and bought half the store, whatever you don’t eat I’ll finish,” Hyena joked as Tim took the bag. “Shit I forgot my sauces,” Hyena grumbled, staring at his nuggets with a little pinch between his brows.
“What sauce are you looking for?” Tim asked, looking through the bag.
“Sweet and sour,” Hyena said brightly and Tim found the sauce and tossed it to Hyena, who hummed happily and took off his mask to eat. He was completely barefaced now and Tim couldn’t help but stare a little just because of how casual he was being about this. “What?” Hyena asked, catching Tim staring.
“Hey I know he’s cute but he’s taken,” Hood joked, slinging an arm around Hyena’s shoulders who cackled and leaned back against Jason.
“No!” Tim said, cursing his fair skin for showing his blush, not because Hood was right of course, he was just embarrassed! “I mean, that’s not what I was thinking, I’m just surprised you took off your mask,” He told Hyena.
“It’s not like you haven’t seen it before I’m sure. I’m sure you and the bats have already figured out my ‘civilian identity’ or whatever. It’s not like I have anything to protect really, I only have the mask and the outfit because I like the aesthetic.” Hyena said, gesturing down at himself.
“Fair enough I guess…” Tim said before looking back at Hood. “How did you get into Titan’s Tower?”
“Trade secrets Timmy, I’d rather talk about you. How’s school? You got a girlfriend or boyfriend?” Jason asked with a shit eating grin as Tim sputtered indignantly and then took a big bite of his burger to avoid having to answer such an invasive question! Especially with Superboy definitely listening in.
Chapter 2: Preemptive Trust
Summary:
Tim gets invited for dinner!
Notes:
Takes place after chapter 5 of I Don't Trust the World With You
Chapter Text
Since first meeting up with Hyena and Jason, Tim had gone to visit them a few more times. Tim would try to arrange his patrol so he’d be by Crime Alley around the middle, when he usually stopped for a break and something to eat. He would cross the invisible border and without fail Hyena would come find him rather quickly and, if Hood could get away, they would have lunch together. It was nice to bond with one of his brothers, especially given how distant Dick had been. He hadn’t been around at all since his last fight with Bruce and Bruce wasn’t exactly emotionally available so it had been lonely. That was fine since Tim was used to it, but still.
Tim had been given access to one of their safe houses in case he ever needed to hide from Bruce, since it absolutely couldn’t be traced to him. Tim had plans to take them up on their offer for homework help too. Next semester he was taking an astronomy course and that was not his specialty. With how much Hyena loved space Tim thought asking for help would be fun for both of them.
All that to say, getting to know both of them was going really well! But Tim still hadn’t been to any of their actual safehouses yet, especially the one Hyena referred to as their ‘nest’. That was fine, Tim understood that perfectly! They had an unspoken agreement to not really talk about the nightlife, but since the three of them were technically on different sides of course they wouldn’t want him in their safe spaces. He wouldn’t press it at all, it would just seem like he was digging for info.
They had invited him over for dinner tonight but Tim wasn’t expecting it to be at their home since they could bring groceries to a safe house easily enough. He was still looking forward to it, especially with how much Hyena had been talking up Jason’s cooking.
The plans had been before Tim had seen their confrontation with Batman and Constantine. Hyena and hood had been so focused on those two they seemed to have forgotten Tim was there. He didn’t mind, his instructions had been to hang back and watch anyway, and it had been really interesting to watch honestly.
He knew that Hyena was fucking with them, he’d spent enough time with the man to know that he was a trickster at heart, but he also knew that Hyena must have been telling the truth thanks to the spell. It was interesting and Tim was curious to say the least, but he doubted he’d be getting any more answers today. He was trying not to think about it too much because he couldn’t stand not knowing things and he didn’t want to end up ruining dinner with incessant questions they’d probably just dodge anyway.
He’d been given the address for dinner and was on his way now, in civvies this time, and without bothering with any sort of contingency plans now that he trusted Jason and Danny more. He was driving one of the more beat up cars so as not to stand out in the poorer area of town, he didn’t want any trouble. He parked, and glanced at the address again to make sure he was in the right place, before letting himself into the apartment building and buzzed their apartment.
“Yellow!” Hyena’s chipper voice came through the speaker, slightly distorted.
“Hey, it’s me, can you buzz me in please?” Tim asked.
“Oh! You’re a bit early. Of course!” Hyena agreed and then the door unlocked and Tim let himself in and headed up.
He double checked the apartment number before knocking, and again it was Hyena who let him in with a bright smile. He was wearing a tshirt with a flying saucer on it and jeans, no mask or hood. It was the first time Tim had seen the white in his hair and he understood the need for the hood, it was pretty distinctive.
“Hi! Welcome!” Hyena said, hugging Tim and nearly lifting him off his feet making him wheeze but he’d been expecting it, Hyena was very tactile and affectionate. He put Tim down quickly and ushered him inside.
“Hey there, Timmy,” Jason called from the kitchen, he had an apron on and there was a small smudge of some sort of sauce on his right cheek. He was smiling and he looked just as at home in the kitchen as he did on the job, comfortable and confident. The smell of warm food, garlic and spices, filled the space making it feel homey. “Dinner’s almost ready but it’ll be a little bit longer. Can Danny get you something to drink?”
“Danny?” Tim asked, it was the first time he’d heard that name, he glanced at Hyena who smiled at him and nodded.
“I know both of your real names, you might as well know mine. I’m sick of hiding behind, like, five different levels of secret identity anyway,” Danny said with a shrug. “So, anything to drink?”
“Uh whatever juice you have is fine,” Tim said with a little shrug, Danny nodded and headed over to the fridge, giving Tim a chance to look around the apartment.
It looked… a lot more lived in then he expected. There was a bouquet of varied roses on the table, some in colours Tim could have sworn roses didn’t come in. Must be from Ivy, but they fit in with the rest of the decor. The space was cozy, the couches looked used but well cared for, and there were decorations on the walls. This must have been their actual home, huh, he hadn’t expected that. Both telling him Danny’s real name, and letting him into their actual home was a show of trust that Tim wasn’t expecting. It seemed a bit premature, he hadn’t earned this trust yet.
“Thank you,” Tim said as he took the cup of tropical-punch Danny handed him.
“Make yourself at home! Jason’s making pasta with stuffed meatballs and sauce, and garlic bread! He makes the best garlic bread,” Danny cheered a little as he went to set the table. Unsure what else to do, Tim sat down at the table and watched the couple dance around each other with practiced ease as they got ready for dinner.
“Ya ya if you keep talking me up he’s going to find the reality a let down,” Jason said, rolling his eyes at Danny before pulling a pan of garlic bread out of the oven and tilting it onto a plate. “Take this to the table,” he directed Danny, who let out an inhuman little trill of delight and snatched the plate, bringing it to the table.
He was a good enough host to let Tim take a piece before he grabbed one as well and took a bite, his mouth opening just slightly too wide and took a big bite, immediately starting to purr. It seemed like after the confrontation with Constantine he had given up on pretending to be human in front of the family. And judging by the absolutely disgustingly loving way Jason was looking at Danny, he was enjoying it.
To avoid making a face at his brother being sappy at his boyfriend Tim took a bite of his own piece of garlic bread and made a series of soft startled noises, first about how hot it was, and then about how flavourful and good it was! He looked down at it in shock, and took another bite quickly, savouring how buttery, and garlicky, and herbaceous it was!
When he looked up he caught Jason watching him with a little smirk on his face, he knew how good it was too and was being smug about it. Tim rolled his eyes and flipped his brother off before he swallowed his bite. “Don’t get cocky,” he said before taking another bite as Danny cackled and Jason rolled his eyes.
“If you don’t think it’s going to be any good you don’t have to have any of the pasta I spent all day making,” Jason said as he grabbed the pot and drained the noodles.
“He made it from scratch!” Danny told him with a cheeky grin, leaning in to add in a conspiratorial stage whisper; “He wanted to impress you so you’d come visit more.”
“You don’t have to have any either!” Jason warned, pointing a spatula threateningly at his boyfriend.
“You wouldn’t dare!” Danny gasped dramatically.
“Try me!” Jason shot back.
“Fine, I’m sorry, please don’t deprive me of your cooking,” Danny laminated with a dramatic swoon.
Tim hid a snort behind his glass of juice at the couple's antics. Jason rolled his eyes and brought one of the dishes over to the table, Danny jumped up to help ferry the rest over to the table as well. Jason put the bowl of pasta down in front of Tim so he could take some while Danny helped himself to meatballs.
Once everyone had food, and Danny had started eating while it was still far too hot for the humans at the table, Tim caught Jason looking at him funny. Tim looked back questioningly, what was Jason thinking about?
“You’re quieter than usual Tim, everything okay?” Jason asked him and Tim winced a little, he’d thought he was being pretty good.
“I’m just trying really hard not to be a detective right now,” Tim explained with a self-deprecating little smile. “I saw what happened between you two and Bruce the other day and I’m curious, but I don’t want to ask-”
“Good, don’t,” Danny cut in, his eyes flashing that dangerous green for just a moment before he shoved another big bite of pasta and sauce, undercutting the threat just a bit.
Tim nodded acknowledgment and continued; “But mainly I’m just, kind of surprised you let me come here? I mean, you know how The Bats are as well as anyone but you brought me to your actual home? You told me your real name. I haven’t earned that much trust.”
Jason shrugged awkwardly and looked at Danny, who swallowed probably too quickly so he could answer. “He’s allergic to expressing his emotions too,” Danny said, gesturing at Jason.
“Learned from the best,” Jason cut in with a self-deprecating laugh.
“So I’ll explain. You didn’t need to earn it,” Danny explained, laying his hands on the table, palm up. “It’s preemptive, we’re hoping that by giving you more of our trust you’ll give us more of yours. Not for any nefarious purposes or anything, but just that you’ll be willing to come to us for help if you need it. And that you won’t listen to all the paranoid rambling I’m sure Bruce is doing about us,” Danny finished with a crooked smile, glancing at Jason who snickered softly.
“I wasn’t listening to him already,” Tim said absently as he turned over what Danny had said in his mind. At least his comment made both of them laugh. “This was your idea huh?” Tim asked Danny.
“Oh ya, basically all of this has been Danny’s ideas,” Jason agreed, fidgeting with his fork. “I had the truly terrible idea to try and threaten you out of being Robin, because the idea of you dying like I did freaked me the Fuck out. It was Danny who said that wouldn’t work and we should support you instead. As usual, he was right,” Jason sighed.
“And that’s how you know I’m the wife!” Danny joked with his slightly manic crackle.
Tim laughed too, and his food was finally cool enough to eat now so he dug in. Oh ya, he was definitely coming back again if it meant more food like this!
Chapter 3: We Will Care For Her
Chapter Text
When the call came in about screaming and gunshots in the woods the Teen Titan’s were worried to say the least, and the closest ones to the scene. With no bigger emergencies all four of them mobilized to check it out. It was unlikely that all four of them would be needed, but they worked better as a team and no one wanted to be left behind.
Tim wasn’t sure what he was expecting, but it was not his brother in full Red Hood getup sprinting out of the building with a white-haired young woman cradled in his arms and someone in a skull mask on his heels. At first Tim thought that the person chasing Jason was causing the problem, until he saw the official people in white after both of them with guns, those sorts were always bad news. If there had been a registered, above board research facility of some sort out here he would have known about it.
Then the stranger turned and let out some sort of concussive scream that was definitely more powerful than even Black Canary's. Everyone chasing them was blasted back into the building and the concrete and steel of the building itself crumpled in on itself like toothpicks. Who were they!?
“Red Hood, what’s happening?” Tim called out to Jason, who glanced at him but didn’t answer,he barely seemed to register Robin was there before his gaze turned back to the masked individual Tim didn’t recognize. Well, didn’t recognize until Hood called out to them and called them Hyena.
That was Hyena?! That was a completely different outfit then the one he was used to, and he had never seen, or even heard of, Hyena using a power like that! Sure he’d told Batman he was powerful, but it was one thing to be told that and a completely different thing to see it. But sure enough he responded to the name, and as he approached Hood, Hyena drew his humanity back around him like a veil, the skeletal appearance covered again by the costume Tim recognized. Tim tensed, ready to step in if he needed to, if Hyena lashed out at anyone. But he was calm, practically huddling up with Jason and the girl, and gently stroking her hair.
Unsure what else to do, Tim signed to Impulse and Wondergirl to check the perimeter. He doubted there was anyone still alive after those explosions, but they needed to check just in case. However that meant that when Hyena took the girl from Hood and brought her over to them it was only Robin and Superboy present, which turned out to only be for the better. Tim had never seen Danny so emotional, it was… jarring, especially compared to his usual manic energy and smile.
“You, you're Super boy, the clone right?” Hyena asked Kon, and after glancing at Robin who gave an almost imperceptible encouraging motion, Kon nodded warily. “She is too,” Danny sighed looking down at the pale girl. “Back when I was still a hero my nemesis made her, she’s… my daughter in any way that matters, my flesh and blood but I… the way I am now I can’t look after her. I never could really, I tried but I was just a teenager at the time,” He let out a self deprecating little laugh. “I managed to stabilize her, but I can’t keep her.”
Hyena had been a hero?! When and where?! Tim had never heard of a hero like him before, certainly not one with this motif, though he knew suits probably changed, especially since ‘Hyena’ was hardly a heroic persona. He had been young then too, very young to be cloned like that. Whoever his villain was sounded like a piece of shit.
“She goes by Phantasm, will you take her? She’s… she’s a good kid, she needs someone better than me. I think your team, or if she needs an adult Wonder Woman or Martian Manhunter, would be best.” Hyena continued, and when he looked up again Tim realized he was actually crying, which had him reeling! Dealing with people’s emotions was always the part of this job he was worst at, and Hyena was someone Tim would almost consider a friend, which did not make it easier. He had never seen Hyena cry before either, somehow he hadn’t even considered it.
Before Tim had even fully processed what was going on Connor had agreed that they would take Phantasm. Not that Tim would have said no, a (probably) empowered young person who needed help like this? That was 100% in their purview, even if she wasn’t a clone, which Superboy was predisposed to be protective of.
“Thank you,” Hyena sighed, tired and sad. “Tell her her template loves her, and tell her where to find me. She’s always welcome with me, just… warn her what I am now. I was very different when she knew me.”
Tim glanced at Connor and resisted the urge to bite his lip. He tried not to obviously show emotion when in costume, but he worried how it felt for him to hear those words? Words that neither of Connor’s DNA donors would ever say about him. He hoped Connor was okay.
“What happened here?” Tim asked again, since no one had answered the first time. He couldn’t just write off so much destruction and loss of life! Even if he wasn’t quite As strict about the no killing rule as B, and he did trust Hyena and Hood more then a bunch of unknown goons in white.
“Remember when I mentioned being experimented on by mad scientists?” Danny asked wryly, Tim nodded and Danny simply gestured back at the facility. These were the people who had done that to him!? He’d been serious? That actually did explain some things. “I didn’t realize they still had her or I would have burned the place to the ground a long time ago. Here,” He said, fishing a USB out of the inside pocket of his jacket and holding it to Tim. “This has info on the organization, I meant to give it to you eventually anyway.”
Tim took it automatically. He’d have to check it for viruses first, and he wouldn’t take anything at face value, but it would be a good place to start his own research. Danny slumped back like a poppet with its strings cut, wiping his eyes with the back of his hand. “Come visit me soon, and tell me how she’s doing if she doesn’t want to see me, please?” He requested, looking back at Tim with a pleading expression that made Tim sort of uncomfortable. Why was he so bad with emotions!
“Right, okay,” Tim agreed awkwardly. He would have anyway, since he met up with Hood and Hyana regularly now. Danny nodded back and then turned, walking back over to Jason with his back hunched and his feet dragging. Jason lifted his arms, letting Danny walk into them. Then they were both just gone, just completely disappeared.
Tim stared at the place where Hood and Hyena had been just a minute ago. Damn did he have a lot of powers to add to his file on Hyena between the transformation, the invisibility, and that earth shattering wail. He shook his head and looked back at the girl Kon was still holding, she was what was important right now.
He looked up, meeting Superboy’s gaze seeing the same confusion and determination on his face. They didn’t know what was going on or why really, but they were going to do right by Phantasm as best as they could. “There are no heartbeats left in the building, and the fire isn’t spreading. We should get her home before she wakes up,” Superboy told Robin softly, who agreed.
As if on queue Impulse skidded to a halt next to them and Wondergirl returned from an overhead scan. “Anything we can do to help?” Tim asked the two of them. Wonder girl shook her head and Impulse shrugged.
“I couldn’t get into the building at all, it’s just a pile of rubble now. I’d be really surprised if there’s anyone still alive in there. So, who are we going to arrest about this?” Impulse asked, shifting from foot to foot absently.
Robin shook his head at Impulse, they wouldn’t be arresting anyone today. Even if maybe they should have at least brought Hood and Hyena in for questioning… Well, it's too late now. “We answered the call and there’s nothing we can do, let’s get home. Wondergirl, do you mind carrying me back to the Tower? I don’t think Superboy is willing to let go of Phantasm,” Robin requested dryly, and Superboy gave him a sheepish smile that told him he was absolutely right about that.
“Sure,” Cassie agreed, clearly amused by Superboy’s reaction, if confused by… everything that was going on.
“Hey, what about me?” Impulse asked with a dramatic pout that had Tim rolling his eyes behind his mask.
“You’ll probably get home before we do so You can start brewing the coffee,” Tim told him dryly, already heading over to Cassie.
Impulse sighed dramatically at Tim and then he was gone, with the air rushing in to fill the space he’d just occupied with a little wooshing sound. Robin shook his head with a soft laugh and allowed Cassie to arrange him like she was going to give him a piggyback ride before she took off, Superboy on their heels as they headed home.
They had plenty of guest rooms since the Teen Titans had an extensive network of young heroes and empowered individuals and sometimes they needed a place to stay. Since most of the rooms were available, they picked the one that was closest to the Core Four’s rooms and settled Phantasm in there. Robin checked her over, checking her pulse, her pupils reactions, her reflexes, and her other vitals, she seemed fine, though still unconscious.
Cassie cleaned her off of all the blood and the odd green fluid, and changed her into some spare sleeping clothes while the boys waited outside the room. When Cassie called to say that they could come back in Phantasm was already tucked into bed, looking much better already. Superboy went and sat on the edge of the bed.
“We should make sure someone is always with her till she wakes up. We have no idea how long she’s been out, or how she might react when she wakes up. Connor, do you want to take the first shift?” He suggested, glancing at his friend who just nodded absently. “Right,” Tim said a little awkwardly and shooed Bart and Cassie out.
They all headed to the kitchen and Tim poured himself a cup of coffee while Cassie and Bart started talking about how fucking weird that had been. Tim lingered just long enough that he thought it wouldn’t be suspicious before heading back towards their rooms. He acted like he was headed back to his own room before detouring and slipping into Phantasm’s new bedroom. He was worried about Superboy and wanted to check on him, this was bound to be a more emotional situation for him then any of them.
Superboy was staring down at Phantasm, his expression blank and his posture suspiciously straight. He was upset. Tim went and sat down next to him, after a moment of hesitation he took Connor’s hand, and gave it a squeeze to bring him back to the here and now. “How are you holding up?” He asked when Connor blinked and looked back at him.
“I’m… okay?” Connor said, looking back at the girl.
“Are you really?” Tim asked dubiously, that did not sound convincing. Connor gave a one shoulder shrug.
“Not really, it’s so fucked up. How many villains clone their heroes like that?! It’s such a messed up thing to do. But… I guess I’m a little jealous of her? Because even if she was made for ‘nefarious purposes’ or whatever, she has someone who really cares about her. But I’m happy for her too, it’s just making me remember… a bunch of shit you know? A lotta feelings,” He sighed, making a vague gesture with his free hand.
“Ya, I know,” Tim said without letting go of Connor’s hand. “You’re not alone though, I’m here for you, we’re all here for you,” He added quickly in case he made Connor uncomfortable with the intimacy. Though… Connor also hadn’t let go of his hand, and squeezed it gently as he gave Tim a slightly strained smile. “You have people who really care about you too.”
“Thank you Robin, that means a lot,” Connor said softly, bumping his shoulder against Tim’s.
-------
It had been 23 hours and Phantasm was still asleep. It was a worrying amount of time, but her heartbeat and breathing had remained stable so Robin wasn’t that worried. Tim was the one waiting by her bedside now, he had already gone through all the documents on the USB Hyena had given him. It contained a frankly horrific amount of evidence, including some pictures and videos that clearly weren't fake, even though Tim sort of wished they were with how gruesome they were. He still had his laptop on his lap though, now looking into any publicly available (or hackable) information to corroborate the information Danny had already given him.
He was also working on a powerpoint to inform the JL about this travesty of a government organization, which they’d somehow allowed to form in spite of the obvious breach of meta-protection acts. When he heard a sound from the bed he nearly jumped out of his skin and slammed his laptop shut, not wanting Phantasm to see what it was he was working on first thing after waking up. He put his laptop down and turned his attention towards her as she stirred in the bed and let out a little groan. After a moment she opened her eyes just a little and glanced around, it looked like she was trying to pretend she was still out till she got the lay of the land, but she hadn’t been trained to properly mask body language.
“You’re safe, Danny found you and freed you, he asked me and my team to look after you,” Tim told her.
She jolted and opened her eyes fully, looking at him with wide eyes. “He’s alive?” She breathed incredulously.
“Yes, he goes by Hyena now. He says he escaped a different facility a bit more than a year ago. He thought you were dead too or he would have come back for you sooner, but we’ll talk more about that later. How do you feel?” Tim asked, setting his computer aside.
She paused as if considering the question. “Okay, I think,” she said thoughtfully.
“Alright, do you think you could manage something to eat and drink? You’ve been asleep for a while and we don’t know how long you were in that tube before that,” Tim asked.
“Ya, I can try, probably better to stick to liquids for now though,” She sighed, squirming to prop herself up a little more against the pillows.
“Alright, I’ll text Superboy to get you some soup then. He’ll be happy to see you’re awake. He’s a clone too and he’s been worried about you,” He told Phantasm absently as he pulled out his phone to text Kon.
“Right. Before he comes, you know Danny’s name but you mentioned he goes by Hyena now? He’s still got a secret identity and stuff? He still a hero?” Phantasm asked, tilting her head to the side a little.
“Ya, I know his name because he’s dating my brother. He knows my secret ID too. He’s still a Mask, but he’s not exactly a hero anymore.” Tim said as delicately as he could as he texted SB.
“Oh dear, how bad did he get?” She breathed, eyes wide and worried.
“Judging by the powers he displayed yesterday nowhere near as bad as he could have. I won’t say he’s not a villain, since my brother is a crime lord, and they both have a body count, but I don’t think he’s a bad guy,” Tim told her as gently as he could.
“Oh,” She sighed, relaxing back against the pillows, which was a bit of a surprise. “Ya, not as bad as it could have been. Do you think he’s happy?”
“He and Red Hood seem really disgustingly in love with each other, so he’s got issues obviously, but ya, I think he’s happy.”
“Good, he deserves to be happy. He was a good hero, people didn’t deserve him anyway.”
That was not the reaction Tim was expecting. He didn’t think it was the reaction Hyena would have expected either, with how worried he had been. Before he could ask more Superboy showed up with a soft woosh with a bowl of hot soup for her, pausing the conversation while he fussed over her.
Chapter 4: How Different Is It
Chapter Text
Tim left Jason and Danny’s apartment with a tupperware of cinnamon rolls and a fresh loaf of bread after the confrontation with Danny and Jason, and shot a quick text to Dick assuring him everything was fine and Tim would share details later, and to Alfred asking about a vacation. Then he turned off his phone before they could text him back. He had had enough of emotions for today and he just wanted to go home and see Kon. To talk, and maybe spar, and try and make sense of what he had just seen.
He sped back to Titan’s tower, he could have called on Kon for a lift, and been home faster of course but he wanted to clear his head on his own. He thought it had worked, at least until he slammed the door with enough force to make himself wince. Huh, he hadn’t meant to do that, clearly he was more upset then he realized.
He winced again when he heard the woosh of air that meant the unusual noise had summoned Kon. Damn that super hearing, nothing got past him.
“Are you okay?” Kon asked, looking over Tim worriedly.
“Yes,” He snapped, before amending quickly. “No, but I’m not ready to talk about it yet. Can we just spar? I have some… stuff to work out. Only if you’re up to it?”
“Of course we can! Come on. Weapons or hand to hand?”
“Hand to hand,” Robin decided as they walked together up to the roof top sparring room. “And stay grounded please.” Sometimes Kon using some flight was a fun challenge to get up to him, today Tim would just find it frustrating.
“I’ll keep it as no-powers as I can,” Kon promised, holding up his hand in a pledge which made Tim's lips twitch up in a smile. He loved the sincerity in Kon, it was so… sweet.
“Thanks Kon,” Tim said, his shoulders already relaxing in preparation for the fight. He tolled them comfortably, his neck to, limbering up for the upcoming spar.
He avoided common areas on the way up, except for slipping into the deserted kitchen for just a moment to leave the food, most of the time sparring was a group activity with those not in the fight cheering from the sidelines, but today Robin didn't want an audience.
They reached the sparring room without anyone seeing them and Tim hopped up onto the mats, waiting for Kon to come join him. When his… partner drifted up Robin didn't wait for the usual formalities of sparring before lunging in, immediately on the offensive. Kon kept his motions to a human speed as he dodged and kicked though it was performative more than anything.
Robin jumped over the leg and kicked back, he didn't pull his punches fighting Kon and normally would think nothing of it. This time though, he hesitated which meant he missed, an event which startled them both so badly that Tim stumbled and Kon missed catching him.
“Robin… are you sure you're okay?” Kon asked worriedly but Tim ignored the question. He used the momentary distraction to push himself up and used that momentum to go on the attack again. He struck without hesitation this time and knew as usual that his knuckles would be now bruised then Kon’s skin. Kon barely responded, he grabbed Tim's arm and swung him around making him skid back before he ran forward again.
He forced himself not to hesitate even as he more deeply analyzed how this felt then he ever had before, was fully aware of the impact of his feet and fist on the flesh of the man he loved. Because despite what everyone thought he was aware of his feelings for Kon. It was just… complicated.
By the time Robin finally stood still they were both breathing heavily, and Tim felt a little bit better. He sighed and ran his hands back through his fair, nodded to Kon and then wandered off the mat, sitting down on the edge of the mat and crossed his legs. After a moment Kon came and sat down next to Tim quietly.
“So, are you ready to talk?” Kon asked after a bit of comfortable silence.
“Ya, Ya I guess so. But you have to keep it to yourself alright? I don’t want anyone else on the team to know it’s a-” He struggled for a moment to think of what to say. “A family matter.”
“Of course. I won’t tell anyone. If you don’t want to talk about it here we can go somewhere else,” Kon offered.
“No that’s alright,” Tim said, shaking his head. “We’re alone right?”
“Ya, we are,” Kon confirmed, he would hear if anyone was eavesdropping.
“Alright,” He was quiet again for a minute trying to figure out how best to say this before deciding to just spit it out. “I saw Jason hit Danny yesterday.”
“What?!” Kon spluttered, his eyes wide and confused.
“They have an agreement, because Danny is durable and heals quickly, and Jason has anger issues Jason takes his anger out on Danny. But it looks awful, Jason is so violent and Danny still bruises and bleeds.
“Nightwing and I went to try and talk about it with them, try and stage an intervention I guess? Danny was absolutely furious and made Nightwing leave immediately but he let me stay because they feel protective of me I guess. Danny explained the bit about the arrangement to me, before that I just knew that Jason hit him.
“He said that it’s no true harm, it’s a bonding thing for them even. He likened it to us sparring. He asked if knowing I can hit you as hard as I can without hurting you really helps, if it feels good to work out my frustration on you knowing I can't actually hurt you.” He sighed, combing his fingers through his hair again. “And it doesn't.
“Is that bad? I mean, he's right, it does feel good. It looks worse that Danny doesn't fight back at all but you can't fight at your full strength either when we spar so the fight you put up is performative to make me feel better more then anything, is that materially different?
“I have a feeling that if I asked you not to fight back you probably would just let me. I didn't ask earlier because I didn't want to find out, not really.”
“Ah,” Kon sounded, looking down and to the side and rubbing the back of his neck. “I guess I wouldn't, if you asked. But you're not hurting me Tim, we're sparring. It's different, it's not wrong. So I guess if that's what they're doing it's not so bad it's it?”
“That's what I think too but at the same time I don't know if that's because it's true or because it's to painful to think about my brother being an abuser and me being like him,” Tim sighed and leaned against Kon’s shoulder who hesitated and then wrapped an arm around Tim’s shoulders.
“You're a good person Rob, and so is Hood. It's okay, you're not doing anything wrong when we spar, it keeps both of us sharp and… calm, and it does help me feel closer to you,” Kon assured.
“Thanks Kon. I really, I really like you, you know?” Tim said softly.
“I really like you too Tim, and when you're ready to get past those fears of commitment you know I'm here, right?” Kon asked softly.
“Right, thank you for being patient. I think it will be soon,” Tim promised, snuggling a little closer to Kon’s side.
Chapter 5: Do You Love Me?
Chapter Text
After the happy couple ran off with their rogue friends for a celebration more their speed, but that minors were definitely not invited to, there was little point to everyone else hanging around. Danny’s siblings headed out first, both turning invisible and slipping out, flying off to either race or play fight probably, ghosts seemed to be big on those sort of competitions. The remaining members of the Wayne family stuck around a little bit longer, but they ran out of things to talk about pretty fast. They had been getting better as a family, getting closer and fighting less, but they still didn’t always get along. Besides, Tim could see Kon fidgeting, standing awkwardly off to the side.
He took pity on Kon and left his family, approaching him and watching him visibly relax the closer Tim came, till Tim was standing next to him and he was smiling softly. “Are you ready to go home?” He asked, tilting his head a little in a way that reminded Tim charmingly of a puppy.
“No, but I am ready to leave here,” He said, smiling back a little. “Let's go find a nice quiet roof top to sit on a bit before we go back to the chaos.”
“You really are a bat aren’t you,” He teased, but he nodded. “But I understand. For only having three other team mates the tower does get pretty damn loud huh?”
They walked away from the restaurant before ducking into an unobserved corner so Kon could pick Tim up and take off with him, flying him to one of the higher, less accessible rooftops. The sounds of the city sounded distant up here, still detectable but removed. It was cold, but Kon was warm, so Tim bullied his way under Kon’s arm and got cozy breathing in the familiar polluted air of the city he had grown up in and loved, despite everything.
“How was the ceremony?” Kon asked, after giving Tim a little time to decompress from all the noise of the dinner so he wouldn’t get overstimulated.
“It was nice,” Tim said, nodding. “It obviously wasn’t big, or long, but it didn’t need to be. They really love each other, it was great to see them so happy without the chaos of the big weddings they’re going to have coming up.”
“Weddings?” Kon clarified.
“Yep, one big one in the mortal realm for the whole hero community, and one in the infinite realms to cement Danny’s coronation. They want me to come to both, but I might not go to the ghost one, that sounds like… a lot.”
“Well I’m sure they’re understand if you don’t go,” Kon said, giving Tim’s shoulders a squeeze.
He nodded, Danny and Jason were honestly the most understanding and supportive people in his life, he was sure they would understand if he had to miss one of their weddings. They sat in silence for a little while until Tim collected his thoughts and managed to speak again. “It did make me think about some things though?”
“Oh? Like what?” Kon said, sounding a little nervous.
“Well… Bruce talked a bit about how Jason and Danny are too young to be getting married. But they’re happy aren’t they? They found their person, it doesn’t matter that they’re young when they know that they’re committed to one another. They’ve been through everything together, they’ve been tested, They know they love each other.” He trailed off and Kon gave an encouraging hum. “Kon? Do we love each other?” He asked, frail and fragile.
“Well… I know I love you. So the ball is in your court Tim, do you love me?” Kon asked, soft and vulnerable.
“What do you love about me?” Tim asked, looking up at him uncertainly.
“I love how smart you are, how passionate you are. You think you’re not good with people but you’re kind, and empathetic and people can see it even if you’re a little awkward. People feel safe with you, I feel safe with you. You’ve accepted me from the very beginning, stood up for me and taught me so much. I-... Honestly, I could go on and on about why I love you. There are a lot of reasons,” He chuckled, rubbing the back of his neck awkwardly.
Tim nodded slowly and looked down at the city. “You’re strong, not just physically. There’s… a strength to your hope, no matter how many times you’re pushed down you get up because you always believe things can get better. You’re so attentive, and so generous with me and with everyone around you. And to be honest, you’re really hot,” He said, smiling crookedly when Kon choked on air a little. “I love you too. Even if you're a bit of a buffoon.”
A beat of silence as they processed what Tim had just said, then Kon tilted Tim’s head up with two fingers to look him in the eye. Tim wasn’t great at eye-contact, but he took a deep breath and made the effort to look back.
“Tim, are you sure?” Kon asked worriedly.
Tim bit back the urge to back away from this vulnerability and throw up shields again. He held his breath, and nodded, trying to ignore the way his eyes were watering even though he wasn’t sad. He was just… emotional, which usually made him cry when he let himself open up fully, even if they weren’t bad emotions.
“I love you,” Kon said again, testing the water.
“I love you too,” Tim said, breathless and unsure, but it felt right. It also felt right when Kon leaned down and kissed him. His lips were slightly chapped, but warm and oh so familiar from all the hours Tim had spent accidentally staring at them in team meetings and private conversations. He slid his arms around Kon’s neck and kissed back.
He chuckled softly but didn’t pull away when Kon started to float unconsciously, just crawling into Kon’s lap so he wouldn’t be left behind on the rooftop. They broke apart, and kissed again, and again, and again. Soft, sweet, chaste little things that still overwhelmed Tim’s stupid emotionally repressed psyche.
He sniffled and pulled away, hiding his face against Kon’s chest, who made a soft sound of worry and hugged Tim securely against his broad chest.
“Are you okay?” Kon asked. “I didn’t-”
“No you didn’t do anything wrong, not at all. I’m just happy, and I don’t know what to do with… this much happy,” He said, laughing wetly at how stupid that sounded.
“Oh,” Kon laughed, giving Tim a careful squeeze. “I’m happy to.”
“Thank you for being so patient with me Kon. I’m sorry it took me so long to admit this.” Tim had loved Kon for a long time really, it was just hard.
“Always,” Kon promised, leaning his cheek against Tim’s hair, happy to just hold him, just to be close as they drifted over Gotham city, lost in their own little world together.
