Chapter Text

Hyun Woo’s heart clenched as he stood by Hae In’s bedside. The sterile hospital room, once a sanctuary of hope and anticipation, now felt like a cruel trap. His eomma had found him there, concern etched in her face—a silent plea for him to return to the too opulent room that couldn’t even be called a hospital room.

Hae In lay in the middle of the oversized bed, her hands clutching her eomma’s for dear life. Sweat beaded on her forehead, dampening her luxurious hospital gown. To Hyun Woo, she looked ethereal, bathed in the harsh fluorescent light. But he couldn’t ignore the truth: she was slipping away, her eyes glazed like glass, tears streaming down her cheeks.

The doctors had finally announced that it was time for her to push—the culmination of months of anticipation and joy. But now, as she writhed in pain, her body contorted, she seemed lost in a fevered haze. Her words were a jumble, fragments of consciousness slipping through her lips.

Hyun Woo positioned himself beside her, his hands trembling. He had imagined this moment—the birth of their child—as one of hope and love. But reality had twisted into a nightmare. And then, one long beep—the ominous sound that signalled the unraveling of their dreams.

Hae In’s grip on his hand weakened, her fingers going lax. Her body slumped, and panic surged through the room. The monitor screamed, its frantic rhythm echoing like a desperate plea. The medical team swarmed, pulling her away from him, laying her flat on the bed.

He watched, helpless, as they fought to revive her. The room closed in, the walls pressing against his chest. The woman he loved—his wife—hung in the balance. The shouts of the medical team merged with the pounding of his heart.

They worked with a desperate rhythm, compressing on her chest. Hyun Woo’s mind flashed back to his days in the camp, trying to practice how to save lives. But this was different. This was Hae In—the woman who had whispered promises of forever, the mother of their child.

“Fight,Hae in-ah” he pleaded, his voice raw. “Please, fight.” One nurse was instructed to bring them out into the adjoining room, her frantic plea for them to stay out of the medical team’s way falling into deaf ears.

there in the corridor they stood, his eomma, his mother in law and the rest of their family who had arrived to wait for the new addition to their expanding clan.

They could hear the monitor’s relentless beeping, each sound a dagger. He bargained with fate, promising anything if only she would open her eyes. And then, miraculously, a gasp—a flutter of eyelids. Hae In’s chest rose, and the room held its breath.

They wheeled her away into the operating room their hurried footsteps echoing down the corridor, leaving him and their family standing there for a moment, torn between relief and terror. She was conscious now, but her life and their baby’s life was still hanging by a fragile thread. Hyun Woo followed, stepping into the unknown, ready to face whatever desperate rhythm awaited them.

Hyun Woo’s world had narrowed to the sterile confines of the hospital corridor. The harsh fluorescent lights flickered overhead, casting shadows on the linoleum floor. His eomma’s hand rested on his shoulder, her grip firm yet trembling. She was the pillar of strength he needed, even as her eyes mirrored his fear.

“Hyun Woo,” she whispered, her voice barely audible above the chaos. “You should go back to the waiting area. Rest a little.”

He shook his head, unable to tear his gaze away from the closed door that led to the operating room. “I can’t leave them, Eomma. Not now.”

Hae In’s life hung in the balance, and he couldn’t bear the thought of being anywhere but by her side. Hyun Woo had glimpsed her pale face, her lips moving silently as if in prayer. But what could she be praying for? A miracle? A chance to hold their child?

The memory of their joy-filled moments haunted him—the first ultrasound, the way Hae In’s eyes had sparkled when they heard the baby’s heartbeat. They had picked out names, painted the nursery, and dreamed of a future filled with laughter and love. Now, all of it seemed like cruel illusions.

He pressed his palm against the cold wall, his heart racing. He could still hear the monitor’s relentless beeping echoing in his ears, a metronome of despair. Each beep was a countdown, a reminder that time slipped through their fingers like sand. He had seen it before—the flatline, the finality. As a former marine sergeant, he was trained to save lives, but this battle was different. This was personal.

The door swung open, and her doctor emerged, her face drawn. “Mr. Baek,” she said gently, “your wife is stable for now. We’ve induced a coma to give her body time to heal. But it’s touch-and-go, your baby girl on the other hand is quite healthy and has a strong set of lungs.” She gave him a small smile easing the tension a bit “We’ll be wheeling your wife shortly back to the VIP suite, your daughter will have to stay in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit for the night just until we’ve made sure there are no adverse effects from the birth.”

Hyun Woo nodded, his throat tight. “Gomawo, uisa seonsaengnim” he bowed grateful for the whole team.

He followed his mother back into the room, where the rest of their family was waiting. He was relaying what the doctor had explained to them earlier when Hae-in was wheeled in, lying still in the hospital bed her chest rising and falling with the help of machines. Her skin was pale, almost translucent. He took her hand, willing warmth into her fingers.

“Fight,” he whispered, his voice raw. “You promised me forever, Hae In. Don’t break that promise now.”

The room blurred as tears welled up. He traced the curve of her cheek, memorising every freckle, every line. She was his anchor, his compass. Without her, he was adrift.

Hours turned into days. Hyun Woo slept in a lazy boy by her bedside, waking at every beep, every flutter of her eyelids. The medical team worked tirelessly, adjusting medications, monitoring vitals. He watched them, their movements synchronised like a desperate dance.

Hyun Woo recognised that he was not alone in facing the uncertain road ahead, thanks to the support of both his family and his wife's family. With their unwavering love and support, he found the strength to stay by Hae In's side, holding onto hope as they navigated through the trials that lay ahead.

Knowing that they were not alone in this journey gave him the courage to face whatever challenges may come their way, united and determined to overcome them together.

And as another day passed, Hyun Woo sat patiently by Hae In's side, waiting for her to awaken before deciding on a name for their newborn daughter. He knew that her presence would bring light and joy into their lives, just as she had done the moment she entered this world.

With each passing moment, he felt a renewed sense of hope and determination, knowing that together they could conquer any obstacle that lay ahead. And so he waited with anticipation for the moment when Hae In would open her eyes and join him on this journey of love and resilience.

“I’ll be right here waiting for you, Hae In-ah” Hyun Woo whispered softly, gently holding her hand on their fourth day in the hospital.

The doctors had decided to lessen her sedation but she was not waking up yet, “it’ll take time, she’s showing signs of brain activity already” that’s what her Neurosurgeon had told them on her third day when her fingers twitched but her eyes didn’t open yet.

"I can't wait for you to meet our little girl;she already has your cute nose," he continued, smiling through the tears that welled up in his eyes.

And then, one morning, it happened—the flutter of eyelids, the ventilator alarming. Hae In’s eyes met his, and he saw a glimmer of recognition. She was back, but the battle wasn’t over. The coma had taken its toll, leaving her fragile, vulnerable.

Hyun Woo held her hand, his heart swelling with hope. “Welcome back,” he whispered. “Well done yeobo, you’ve been so strong” his tears falling freely now

Her hands though weak squeezed his back, and though still intubated she tried her hardest to communicate with him. She was okay, she wanted the tube out.

Hyun woo just nodded, pulling the call bell as fast as he can while keeping hae in’s hands away from her lines “I know yeobo, I know, please be patient. You’re safe, you're okay” he kissed her hands again trying to calm her down.

Her monitors we’re going haywire, blood pressure shooting up, her heart rate became erratic and hyun woo was getting flashbacks again but all he could do was talk to her until the nurse came in, professional and calm she gently tapped hae in’s shoulder “Ms hong, please just relax” she had seen the monitors and understood her patient’s distress “ I know it’s scary but we need to make sure you can breath on your own properly before we take the tube out, we’re just waiting for your consultant.” Hae in stubborn woman that she is at first struggled but then her hyun woo’s hands, constant and warm had softly grazed her cheeks and her focus shifted on him.

Hyun woo knew he must have looked like a truck had run over him, he could see his wife’s survival instincts subsiding the need to comfort him becoming her first priority, she gently traced her hands through his face a silent question he understood right away “I’m okay yeobo, you just have to relax. I’m here.” The nurse gave him a grateful look, her focus back on the monitor.

“The whole family's just in the nursery, they’ve been pestering the whole maternal ward to let them in” he chuckled remembering aunt beom ja complaining that the nurses we’re worse then the prison guards, they couldn’t be bribed to let the whole hong and baek family stay in the nursery as long as they want.

Hae in smiled at him, squeezing his hands again. He would like to think that his presence was the driving force that’s keeping her calm.

The room held its breath, as if waiting for fate to decide. But Hyun Woo knew one thing: love was stronger than any monitor’s beep. And he was ready to fight—for their future, for the promises whispered in the dark, for the life they had created. Whatever desperate rhythm awaited them, they would face it side by side.

Notes:

Hae in had a vasovagal response it’s usually not fatal and it’s one of the common causes of fainting but pregnant woman are more prone to have them. Sometimes people tend to bounce back right away from one episode but when you’re under a lot of stress and strain it could be life threatening.
