Chapter Text
Riliane crouched from inside the wooden horse. They were waiting for nightfall when the people of the Marlon kingdom would be asleep, and they could attack.
“Alright my soldiers listen closely. Tonight we make the Marlon's pay. Ten years of war they killed us slowly, but now we'll be the ones to slay them!” despite her forceful tone, she made sure to speak softly, so as not to let anyone outside hear them and catch on to their plan.
“Think of your wives and your children,” Riliane told them. She wanted to remind them what they were fighting for. “Your families wonder where you've been. They're growing old and yet you're still here. Do what I say and you'll see them again.”
“Yes sir!” They said enthusiastically. In particular Germaine and Allen grinned at her.
Allen was her twin brother, once named Alexiel. He was adopted by the Avadonia family due to a prophecy of doom when the two of them were born. However, he and Riliane had been close ever since they'd been reunited at thirteen years old.
It had actually caused some tension between Riliane and Germaine in the beginning. Both of them had felt threatened by each other. Both of them were Allen's sister, and they didn't want him to replace them. So they had an unspoken, extremely petty battle for the title of ‘best sister’, until Allen had realized what had been going on and sat the two of them down for a conversation that basically amounted to ‘I can have two sisters.’
They had eventually bonded and even considered each other to be their own sister, as well as Allen's. Even now, Riliane considered Germaine her right hand woman. Maybe even her second in command. (If she was honest with herself, Germaine was a better fighter than Allen was.)
They still had their disagreements. However, Allen was the glue that held them together, and they were always ride or die for each other, if only for his sake.
Riliane was jolted out of her musings by what sounded like a bird call. Of course it was nighttime so no birds would be out.
That was the signal.
“Okay, Justea will lead the charge. Juno will flank the guards. Gastolle will let our mates through the gates to take the whole city at large. Kiril will shoot any ambush attack, and Irina will stay back. Keel, secure Mikina and protect her. Phoebe, avenge your father, kill the brothers of Mayrana.”
“Yes sir!” They immediately went to do as she said.
By this point, they all trusted Riliane to lead the group correctly in war. After all, she'd been mentored by the Goddess of Wisdom, Banica Conchita, since she was a child.
Though most people didn't know that…
Still they trusted her to keep them alive and Riliane reveled in their faith in her. She would not let them down!
“Find that inner strength now!” Riliane encouraged, “Use that well of pride! Fight through every pain now! Ask yourself inside! What do you live for?! What do you try for?! What do you wish for?! What do you fight for?!”
Her soldiers began to echo her words.
“What do you live for?!”
“What do you try for?!
“What do you wish for?!”
“What do you fight for?!”
Riliane smiled, it reminded her of what she was fighting for.
Her wife, Chartette, and her son, Sammy.
“Chartette,” she whispered, as she killed someone.
“Chartette…” Riliane said again. Running her blade through the heart of an enemy.
“And Sammy…” She beheaded another soldier.
I fight for us, Riliane thought, I fight for US!
She continued fighting the soldiers, killing plenty, and keeping an eye on her allies. She took a deep breath as the last of her enemies was killed.
Then suddenly–
She was somewhere else, a blue-haired man had just stabbed her.
Then she blinked and it was gone.
She found herself running into an abandoned building. Completely panicked, acting on instinct.
Who was that…?
“A vision of what is to come,” a deep voice responded to her unanswered question.
Riliane looked up, and recognized them immediately. The god of thunder, Venomania.
“It can not be outrun,” the god continued, “It can only be dealt with right here, and now.”
“Tell me how!” Riliane said. She didn't want to let a future like that happen!
“I don't think you're ready.” Venomania shook his head. “You must complete a mission: to kill someone's son. A foe who won't run. Unlike any other you've faced before. Unlike anyone you have faced before.”
“Say no more,” Riliane said with a grin. “I know that I'm ready!” She could fight anyone, no matter how strong or determined they were!
“I don't think you're ready,” Venomania shook his head again.
However, he handed her a parcel, wrapped in cotton cloth.
As she removed the soft blanket she was greeted by the chubby face of a new-born. She took the blanket, and wrapped it around the baby again. After all, that blanket was all he had, and she didn't want the child to be cold.
“I don't understand,” she said softly, looking up at Venomania. “It's just an infant. It's just a boy. What sort of imminent threat does he pose that I cannot avoid?” The very idea of a baby, unable to even walk, being a danger to Riliane seemed ridiculous.
“This is the son of none other than Marlon’s very own Queen Prim,” Venomania explained, “Know that he will grow from a boy to an avenger. One fueled with rage as you're consumed by age. If you don't end him now, you'll have no one left to save
You can say goodbye to your wife. You can say goodbye to your family.”
“I could raise him as my own!” Riliane suggested, desperately. After all, she already had a son, she could easily adopt another.
“He would burn your house and throne,” the god said calmly.
“Or send him far away from home!” She didn't want to hurt a child–
“He will find you wherever you go.”
“I'll make sure his past is never known! He'll grow up thinking he's an ordinary orphan.”
“The gods would make sure he knows.”
“I'd rather bleed for you! Cut of my hand as a sacrifice! I'm down on my knees for you!” Riliane knelt before the god, holding up the baby like an offering. Even if the child was to die, she didn't want to be the one to do it. “I'm begging you, please–”
“It is the will of the gods.”
“Please don't make me do this! PLEASE DON'T MAKE ME DO THIS!!!” Tears streamed down her face.
“The blood on your hands is something you won't lose,” Venomania said, “All you can choose is whose.”
Notes:
Look, I know the ages thing with Kyle being an infant is a little weird--
But who else could make the entire world go to war against them other than Prim?
(Also AnimeHairColors thought the image of Riliane throwing Kyle off a building was funny...)
Chapter 2: Just a (wo)man
Chapter by Animehaircolors
Summary:
"gimme that baby and I'd yeet it off a tower"
Chapter Text
Venomania handed her a shining silver dagger, before he disappeared. That only left her, and the infant.
Riliane looked down at the baby in her arms, babbling softly up at her. She held the knife, and…
He looked rather… Afraid.
Riliane sighed. “I look into your eyes and I think back to the son of mine,” she spoke softly, trying to comfort the child. “You're as old as he was, when I left for war,” she gently tapped the baby on the nose, causing him to let out a giggle, and hold her finger in his tiny hand.
Will these actions haunt my days? Riliane wondered. She thought back to every man she'd slayed. War was nothing if not endless pain.
“Close your eyes,” she told the child, “And spare yourself the view. How could I hurt you…?” She set the knife down, tears streaming down her face.
She started walking towards the outer wall. Though she wasn't sure if she was going to kill the infant, or take him with her. She couldn't kill a child, right? She couldn't! And yet…
If she didn't her wife would be MURDERED.
“None of this is your fault,” she told the boy, “It's a trick of the gods, I'm sure… I'm not a god. I don't want to hurt you. I'm just someone trying to go home. I've spent all this time here, fighting for my life, when… Deep down I'd trade the world to see my son and wife. I'm no god. Just an ordinary woman…”
She held the child close, standing at the top of the wall.
She remembered an old poem she had once read.
When does a comet become a meteor?
When does a candle become a blaze?
When does a man become a monster?
When does a ripple become a tidal wave?
When does the reason become the blame?
When does a man become a monster?
“Forgive me,” she said softly. He held the boy, now fast asleep, over the edge of the wall. If she let go, he would fall to his death. Would she become a monster for this?
“Forgive me…”
When does a man become a monster?
“FORGIVE ME!” She begged the child.
Then she let go.
“I'm just a woman…” She said.
It was true. She was no god, just a human. What else could Riliane do when Venomania himself told her that if she didn't kill someone else, she would die.
She had no choice…
And yet that infant’s sleeping face would haunt her nightmares for the rest of her life.
Chapter 3: Full Speed Ahead
Chapter by Animehaircolors
Chapter Text
Riliane looked out across the ocean.
Six hundred men… Six hundred men under my command. With only one goal in mind: Make it back alive to our homeland.
She breathed deep, enjoying the salty air.
Six hundred men, six hundred miles of open sea… But the problem's not the distance… It's what lies in between.
“Are you alright, captain?” Asan asked.
Riliane nodded, “I'm fine. I'm excited to get home.”
“Well then we should probably hurry,” he said, “Lucifinia’s waiting.”
“Lucifinia’s waiting!” Several people agreed, seeming excited.
Riliane turned back towards the ocean. “My kingdom is waiting…”
Chartette is waiting for me…
“Full speed ahead!” Riliane called to her crew, “FULL SPEED AHEAD!”
“Captain!”
Riliane turned around to be greeted with the sight of Germaine.
“Yes?” Riliane asked.
We have six hundred men with big mouths to feed! And we've run out of supplies to eat!”
“Curse the war, our food stores are depleted…” several people muttered.
“We have six hundred men,” Germaine said again, “Six hundred reasons to take what we can. So captain, what's the plan?”
“Watch where the birds fly,” Riliane said, “They will lead us to land. There we'll hunt for food, my second in command,” she slapped Germaine on the shoulder, affectionately. “Now full speed ahead!”
She was so excited to get home…
They sailed for a few hours, following the birds. Riliane was left alone with her thoughts, and daydreams, until nightfall.
“Captain!” her brother called to her.
“Allen!” Riliane said, giving him a hug. She hadn't seen him all day.
“Look!” He said, pointing. “There in the distance, I see an island. I see a light that faintly glows. Maybe they're people lighting a fire. Maybe they'll share some food, who knows?”
Riliane looked where he was pointing. Indeed, there was an island, with a faint orange glow coming from it. And yet…
“Something feels off here,” Riliane told him, “I see fire but there's no smoke…”
“I say we strike first!” Germaine said, having apparently decided to inject herself into the conversation, “We don't have time to waste, so let's raid the place and–”
“No,” Riliane interrupted. They weren't at war anymore. She didn't want to treat innocent bystanders like enemies. “Allen, let's gear up. You and I'll go ahead...”
While her brother wasn't as good in a fight as Germaine, he was much less likely to start one. Maybe a bit too unlikely to start one…
“You and I'll go ahead?” Allen prompted. Riliane had gotten lost in her thoughts.
“We should try to find a way no one ends up dead,” Riliane told him.
“We don't know what's ahead,” Germaine pointed out, “They could be anyone? What if you don't make it back?”
“Give me til sunrise, and if we don't return,” Riliane paused for dramatic effect, “Then six hundred men can make this whole place burn!”
Allen looked horrified.
On the other hand, Germaine nodded, with a faint smile.
“Now full speed ahead!” Riliane called to the crew.
“‘Six hundred men can make the whole place burn’ ?” Allen asked her, with a raised eyebrow. “I thought we were trying to prevent more deaths.”
“Think of it this way,” Riliane told him, “It’s just insurance. That way if they take us captive or something, we can force them to let us go, or else they'll die. It's leverage, nothing more. I don't think it will come to that.”
“What if we accidentally fall asleep!? And the crew doesn't know so they burn the place down!?”
“That won't happen,” Riliane said confidently. “I slept last night, and… Well after the war, sleep has been a bit of an ‘every other day’ event…” She sighed tiredly. Sleep was hard to come by when you had so much blood on your hands… Especially the blood of innocents.
...Like that child…
Looking concerned, Allen put a hand on her shoulder. Riliane smiled, grateful for it.
Chapter Text
“You can relax, my friend,” Allen said softly.
“Huh?” Riliane asked, distracted. She was scanning the area around them for any sign of danger. She didn't want to become a victim of a surprise attack. Everything seemed peaceful and quiet. Too quiet…
“I can tell you're getting nervous,” Allen said, smiling faintly, “So do yourself a service, and try to relax a bit.”
“I'm fine , Allen,” Riliane said. More forcefully than she should've. However, Allen didn't seem to mind.
He never did… He'd put up with so much from both her, and Germaine, and never asked for anything but their company in return. He was so loyal and kind, Riliane would probably defy the gods themselves if it meant protecting her brother, and she knew Germaine would do the same.
“You're not ‘fine’, Riliane,” Allen shook his head. “You look like you're about to try to bite the next person who gets close to you.”
“In that case, I'm surprised you're not further away right now,” Riliane sassed. She didn't want to upset him, and she thought humor would break the tension. Still, she was fine.
“Nah, you'd never bite me ,” Allen said confidently.
“Yeah, I could never bite my little brother,” Riliane grinned.
“WE'RE THE SAME AGE!?” Allen said, indignant. “And I'm taller than you!”
“Nah, I'm older than you. So is Germaine. You're the baby of the family I'm afraid.” Riliane ruffled his hair.
It was true, in a way. Allen, despite living through the same war they had, retained a kind of innocence and nativity that reminded Riliane of a small child.
“How dare you!?” Allen clutched his chest dramatically, “Comparing your twin to a mere infant!”
-The infant she'd thrown of a building-
Riliane shut her eyes, trying to banish the image from her mind. She took a breath, and started scanning for danger again. She couldn't let her guard down, Conchita had told her that much.
“Hey,” Allen said, concerned, “What's wrong? Is there something around us?”
“Not that I can see, but you can never be too careful,” Riliane told him. She squinted at a tree. Was that a person hiding behind the trunk to launch a surprise attack? No. That was just a squirrel.
“Look,” Allen said, smiling at her gently, “Think of all that we have been through. We'll survive whatever we get into!”
Riliane let out a non-committal hum. She continued scanning the trees.
“I know that you're tired of the war and bloodshed. Tell me? Is this how we're supposed to live?”
“Better to live like this, than not live at all,” Riliane said. She felt a tap on her shoulder, on the opposite side that Allen was standing. She pulled out her sword and turned around in a fury.
Allen chuckled.
That's when she realized he'd been the one to tap her shoulder as a prank.
“Look at how you grip your sword, enough said,” Allen wrapped an arm around her shoulder. “Why should we take when we could give?”
“Give what?” Riliane asked, “We're out of food.”
“Well, for starters, you could show a person that you trust them–”
“I don't.”
“When you stop and lower your guard.” Allen glared at her. Then he just sighed. “The war is over, we have a chance for some adjustment. Give it a try, it's not that hard!
I'm telling you, This life is amazing when you greet it with open arms!”
Riliane promptly decided her brother had lost his mind. Then she kept scanning for danger.
Not seeming to notice this, or care, Allen continued.
“Whatever we face, we'll be fine if we're leading from the heart. No matter the place, we can light up the world
Here's how to start! Greet the world with open arms
Greet the world with open arms!”
Riliane was about to retort when she saw something in front of her.
People, maybe. Dozens of them.
“Welcome,” they all said in sync.
“Stay back!” Riliane said. She pulled out her sword, and put her other arm in front of Allen protectively
“Stay back?” The strange people asked in unison. They seemed confused.
“My dear twin sister,” Allen gently whispered, “Greet the world with open arms.”
Riliane sighed. The things she did for her brother…
She lowered her sword, though she didn't put it away.
“We're only here for food,” She explained to them, “Six hundred friends are waiting for us to show our faces! Stay back I'm warning you!” She added as a few stepped closer to the two of them. “If we don't get back safely, my men will turn this place into blaz–”
“Here ya go!” They handed her a large leather bag, filled with glowing fruit.
“See!” Allen said excitedly. “It's like I said! This life is amazing, when you greet it with open arms!” He gave her a hug.
Riliane smiled, enjoying her brother's embrace.
She was so lucky he survived the war…
“No matter the place! We can light up the world!”
“We can?” Riliane asked, amused.
“Yep! Here's how to start: greet the world with open arms!”
Riliane raised an eyebrow. “What?”
“Greet the world with open arms!” He stood with his arms open like he was trying to hug the nearest person, or tree. Riliane laughed, and hugged her brother. That way his arms were around her, and not open for the nearest person who could potentially hurt him.
… Especially since she'd just realized what that fruit was.
“Allen,” she said softly, “I wish that I could say that I agree...”
“Those people were nice, weren't they?” He challenged.
Riliane sighed, “But look at the way this fruit is glowing, and filled with glowing seeds.” She opened up a lotus to show him.
Allen frowned, “So?”
Riliane sighed again. “It took me a while to notice just what kind of fruit they eat. It's a lotus. It controls your mind, and never lets you leave… That's what we'd get with ‘open arms’...”
Allen frowned. Before she could stop him, he ran towards the people who'd given Riliane the poisoned fruit.
“Lotus eaters!” He called to them, “I’m sorry to say that we won't eat your fruit. But I'd like to show my sister that kindness is brave! Can you please tell me where there's other food we could eat?”
“A cave,” they said in unison.
“A scary cave…” One whispered..
“A cave?” Allen asked.
“A cave filled with food. Enough food for a giant to eat.” Another one spoke.
“You're saying there's a cave where we could feast!? Where do we sail to find this food-filled cave!?”
“East.”
“THANK YOU!” Allen practically bounced with excitement.
“Welcome.”
He ran over to Riliane.
“Are you sure about this?” Riliane asked him.
“Absolutely! Why would they lie?!”
“I don't know about this…” Riliane frowned.
“Please! Riliane! I wanna go to the cave!”
“But what if it's a trap!?”
“What would they gain from that!? We aren't at war anymore. Riliane… I promise, life is amazing when you greet it with open arms.”
Allen hugged her tightly. “I see in your face, there's so much guilt inside your heart,” he whispered as Riliane hugged him back, thinking of the child she'd killed that night.
She did feel guilty…
“So why not replace that guilt? By focusing on making the world better, and making people happy.”
“I don't know how to do that,” Riliane whispered. She'd been at war for ten years . She didn't know how to just– change.
Allen pulled away slightly, to smile at her, “Here's how to start: greet the world with open arms. Just try to greet the world with open arms.”
“Greet the world with open arms,” Riliane echoed, with a soft smiled.
“You can relax now, sis.”
Riliane couldn't help it, she laughed, “‘Sis’? What are we? A badly written book?”
“Hey! I like calling you ‘Sis’ it's a reminder that no matter what, even if we grew up apart, you're still my sister.”
Riliane snorted, “Okay ‘bro’.”
“Nope, nevermind. You're not allowed to call me that actually.”
“If you say so,” Riliane laughed.
“Hey,” Allen said, voice turning sincere. “I love you.”
“I love you too, Allen.” Riliane hugged him tightly, “Tell you what, I'll try to ‘greet the world with open arms’, if you promise me that you'll try to keep in mind potential threats. As much as you might want to give people a chance, they can still be dangerous. I really don't want you to get hurt.”
“I know,” Allen said, “And I'm not gonna get hurt. Who's gonna hurt me? The war is over.”
“Still…” Riliane said, “Please be careful.”
“Alright, sis, if you really want me to.”
“Again with that?!” Riliane laughed.
“Yep! And you can't do anything to stop me!!!” With that Allen did an exaggerated ‘evil laugh'.
“Oh yeah?” Riliane questioned playfully.
“Yep!” Allen said.
So naturally Riliane lunged at him, starting a playful wrestling match.
Oh she loved her brother.

Chapter Text
“Have you forgotten the lessons I taught you?!” A sharp angry voice spoke.
“Conchita!” Riliane said, slightly panicked. An angry goddess was always at least slightly dangerous.
“‘Greet the world with open arms’?! Have you forgotten to turn off your heart? This is not you!”
“But–”
“I see you changing from how I've designed you! Have you forgotten your purpose? Let me remind you…”
She waved her hand, and suddenly Riliane was somewhere else. She was in the forest, watching her younger self, who was also being watched by Conchita.
“Goddess of wisdom,” Conchita’s voice spoke in her mind, “I am the master of war. My life has one mission, to create the greatest warrior.”
“I had a challenge, a test of skill. A magic boar only the best could kill. One day a girl came for the thrill. A girl whose mind rivaled the boar's own will.”
As Conchita spoke in her mind, Riliane watched as she killed the boar.
She remembered that day. Both Allen and Germaine had congratulated her. Allen had practically thrown a party.
“Let's go!” That younger version of herself shouted once the boar was killed.
Then time seemed to move forward a few days.
Riliane watched her younger self walk around a forest.
“Show yourself,” she whispered, “I know you're watching me. Show yourself.” She turned around, clearly looking for the one she knew was watching her.
Closed her eyes, trying to sense where the presence was coming from.
She turned. Facing her best guess where the entity was.
Riliane smiled. She remembered this. She was proud of this trick.
“I can see you!”
“How can you see through my spell!?” Conchita demanded, dismissing her magic and becoming visible.
“Haha! I was lying and you fell for my bluff!” She laughed.
A few emotions crossed Conchita's face. Annoyance, embarrassment, perhaps? But in the end, she just chuckled.
“Well done, enlighten me, what's your name?”
“You first, and maybe I'll do the same,” Riliane cocked her head, grinning.
“Nice try, but two can play that game,” Conchita said. Clearly waiting for Riliane's next move.
As though I wouldn't recognize a goddess, Riliane thought, as she watched this old memory.
“Nah! Don't be modest! I know you're a goddess! So let's be honest–” Younger Riliane practically bounced up to Conchita. “You must be Conchita! Badass in the arena! Unmatched, witty, and queen of the best strategies we've seen!!!”
Conchita smiled, “If you're looking for a mentor, I'll make sure your time's well spent.”
“Sounds like a plan! Goddess and man! Bestest of friends!”
“We'll see where it ends,” Conchita said, in a tone that clearly implied ‘calm down’.
“Okay…” Younger Riliane said, a bit sheepishly.
“What is the point of showing me all this again?” Riliane asked. “I was there, you know.”
“I want you to remember your old mentalities. You wouldn't have been so kind to potential enemies on that island,” Conchita said.
“I did it because my brother asked me to,” Riliane said calmly.
“Do you not remember your goals?! What you told me?!”
The scene changed again, and Riliane was watching herself about a week after she met Conchita.
“What do you want?” Conchita asked her, “I want to make you a warrior, but what do you want?”
“I want to be a leader!” Younger Riliane told the goddess. “One day, people will follow me! And we'll make a greater tomorrow! Then they'll see!”
“They will,” Conchita agreed, “Because we are the warriors of the mind.”
“Maybe one day we'll reach them! And we can build their skills as we teach them! If there's a problem, we'll have the answer! We are the warriors of the mind!” Riliane sounded so excited back then…
When had she stopped having that enthusiasm…?
“I still intend to make sure you don't fall behind,” Conchita told her, “Don't forget that you're a warrior of a very special kind.” She pat younger Riliane's head, “You are a warrior of the mind.” Then Conchita stared down at her very coldly, “Don't disappoint me…”
Riliane, in the present, sighed.
“You wanted to be a leader!” Conchita said, “Why are you listening to your brother!?”
“Don't.” Riliane warned her. Conchita may be a goddess, but nobody was allowed to insult her family.
Conchita sighed, “You're going to go down a dark path if you continue this way,” she warned.
Then she disappeared.
Riliane rubbed her eyes, exhausted. She didn't know what Conchita expected her to do.
