Chapter Text
The train starts moving right after the door closes behind. I finally exhale and try to keep my breathing steady.
"Do you want to take a seat?" Someone calls out.
I look around to see the voice, making eye contact with…
a bunny monster.
That's right. There's a bunny in the train. Maybe even a wolf looking monster appears to be around here too, and I can see him if I lean to the side and look in the other car.
There are now monsters living among us. They sometimes come in animal form- a bit anthropomorphic since some stand on two legs or can speak. Although, they're definitely NOT animals. More like fairies- since they are made up of magic pixie dust basically. Some of them are shaped like objects. Monsters or creatures is sometimes what the average plebian calls them. I like to call them fairies or magical monsters.
"Oh, I'm alright." I reply, still out of breath. I had to cross the street with a jog to catch the train before it left the station. "My stop is the one after this one," I assure the nice bunny monster as I smile. I clenched my iced tea in a plastic cup and looked to see if I spilled any. In my rush out of the café, I forgot to bring some napkins, but luckily it's all still in the cup. It started to condense on the way over here.
"Alright, if you're sure," she says and after seeing me smile, she went back to her phone. She was a heartbeat away from getting up and offering her seat! They're always so nice and considerate. Did these gentle creatures really get banished after fighting humans in the medieval era? How long where they banished again?
Usually, most humans don't really bother offering seats. Some even leave their bags on the adjacent seat to avoid sharing the window/aisle chair. There was this one time where a guy came in and sat right beside me when there was the whole empty car to ourselves! I had to gently ask him to seat elsewhere. Talk about creepy.
The train stops, reaching the midway point between the station with the cafe and the station next to my college. Today is my first day of the summer semester and I'm honestly a little worried. With magical monsters establishing into society, a few changes and abrupt rescheduling would sometimes happen. Humans were split 50/50 on whether to welcome fairies into the community or not.
"…. Station, this is the (favorite/color) train…" I ignore the lady train voice in leu of my phone. I have about ten minutes to get to class. The professor might start a bit later for the first day to let students find the class. Summer classes are mostly fast track courses but the first day is usually for syllabus talk and getting to know the classmates. Just like K-12's first week.
The train stops again and so I walk out, making sure to nod a goodbye to the bunny. Instead of a wave back, she gives me a smile of her own.
I'm faced with many people trying to get in. Mostly humans, they're always eager to get in and eager to NOT let passengers get out. I squeeze through and try to get as far away from the crowd as possible.
I pass the train station chairs and the brick pillars of the shade archways, turning towards my destination. Just as I was about to sigh in relief, somebody bumps into the back of my shoulder- HARD. With my shoulder pushed, my hand moves in towards my chest, and the coldness of my iced tea shocks me into releasing my grip on it.
"W-woah!" I say, caught by surprise. Just as I thought all hope was lost for my sweet, iced tea, I see blue hands reach over to grab it before it could fall to the ground.
"MY- OH MY!" The voice of the blue hands calls out. We both weren't exactly looking where we were going exactly, I guess. Their voice was real loud considering we're next to each other. Their voice still remains the same volume as they apologize, "SORRY HUMAN,"
"I wasn't looking both ways, it's my fault," On closer inspection, the 'blue' hands were actually covered in slightly suspicious- one size too big- gloves of a light blue color. I move my eyes to the owner of my tea savior, glancing over those white porcelain arms to lock eyes with… a magical monster…
a skeleton magical monster. Were those gaping holes considered eyes, though?
No, wait- after I blinked, I noticed the black pupils behind his 'white dots.' They had a hint of blue. The glowing disks seem to levitate in front of those big gaping holes. I couldn't see inside the skull. But those eyes were looking right back at me, as if waiting for my reaction on this one particular encounter.
Blinking stupidly, I force myself to hold a smile as I notice that he's smiling at me.
"I DIDN’T HURT YOU, DID I?" He asks, handing me the saved drink.
We both move our bodies to the direction of campus and start walking.
"N-no, you didn't."
"HEY, ARE YOU A STUDENT?" He had an even bigger grin- if that was at all possible.
I look down at the school badge he pointed at. "Oh, uhm, yes, I am."
"COOL. SO WE'RE GOING THE SAME DIRECTION!"
I offer a wavering smile as we both walk towards the building.
"MY NAME'S SANS. SANS THE SKELETON."
"Mines: (your/name)."
"WHY HELLO (Y/N)."
We start chatting about around school rank. I'm a sophomore while he's a freshman. He kept talking really loudly although we were shoulder to shoulder. I took a sip of my tea when the conversation turned stale. It seemed we were both in a rush to reach the building and be on time for our classes.
Once we went inside, I expected him to walk on his own path but nope! He kept walking beside me. All the way to the elevator.
There were other people that also wanted to traverse floors, so we got squished into a corner. I was able to press the button to the floor where I'll be having class. Sans leaned in a bit to look at the numbers, but he didn’t reach to press any one of them.
In the small space of the elevator, I was able to smell his cologne. It smelled of ---- I'm not sure. I couldn't sniff again for fear that he'd notice. It was a nice easy-going scent.
We locked eyes for a bit.
We both were breathing while we looked into each other's eyes.
I thought of something daring. While our hips were touching, we were just looking at each other!
I leaned my tea towards him. "You want some?" I mouthed.
Without saying yes, he opened his mouth and drank from it.
An indirect kiss.
The elevator arrived at my floor number and so I walked out. Sans was right behind me.
"SO WHAT CLASS DO YOU HAVE RIGHT NOW?"
"(Favorite/subject)," I replied as we walked towards the room number that I had an inkling I would be sharing with a certain someone.
"OH, I HAVE THIS CLASS, TOO!"
This summer was going to be fun.
