Chapter Text
Early in the morning, Yanqing, Yunli, and March 7th arrived on the Skysplitter and met in the ring because of an anonymous group message to meet.
“Anyone else think this is suspicious? Don’t tell me some weirdo caught wind of our fight and is challenging us?” March groaned, already feeling her bones ache.
Yunli however, is far more confident. “March, everyone was unconscious or hiding by the time we faced Hoolay. Also, we faced Hoolay! I hope nobody is dumb enough to attack us after that.”
“Hmmm.” Yanqing took another look at the number. It didn’t seem like a scam. “I can’t explain it, but I feel like I should know this number. I don’t think it belongs to any Cloud Knight on the ship though. Regardless, keep your eyes peeled for anything.”
Suddenly, a powerful pillar of wind struck the arena. Dust whipped around ferociously and disbursed to reveal General Feixiao. Yanqing immediately felt like a fool. He’s definitely had to patch her through to Jing Yuan before.
“Greetings, young friends. I’m glad you all could come!”
March immediately went on the defensive, slowly bending her knees in case she had to move. “I…have a bad feeling about this.”
“Haha, relax. I know I made the message sound urgent, but in truth it’s more time sensitive than anything else.”
Yunli summoned Old Mettle. “Don’t tell me there’s still a few wolves skulking about in the shadows!?”
“If so, what are our orders? We’ll help in any way.” Yanqing added. “My blade is ready.”
“Wow.” Feixiao smirked. “Still recovering and willing to go back into the fray. Admirable and brash. I can relate. Fortunately however, I didn’t call you here because of a crisis. Soon we’ll be parting ways. Before that, there’s something I wanted to properly check. That’s why I asked for you three. What I’m about to say can’t make it back to Lingsha.”
“So it is a fight!!?” The trio said in disbelief.
“Precisely. Yanqing, Yunli, I want you both to come at me the best you can. As for March, please observe from the sidelines. Part of training is observing after all. Watch carefully.”
“Don’t have to tell me twice!” March booked it towards the sidelines, causing her masters to silently judge her for a moment before giving their attention to the Foxian.
“Whenever you two are ready.”
The young sword masters couldn’t believe they found themselves in the same situation again. No one was even fully healed yet! Still, a chance to learn from the Merlin’s Claw; now who would dare pass up such an opportunity.
Yunli was first to close the distance in a single leap, swinging down Old Mettle to meet the war ax that could tear clouds asunder. Blow after blow, metal echoed like thunder. Feixiao could only smile. It wasn’t often someone could actually engage her in a contest of brute strength, and Yunli was giving her just that!
“Very nice! Your grandfather must be proud.”
“I’m just getting started!” Yunli grunted, swinging with her full might.
Feixiao blocked a side swipe with the body of her ax then slid backwards in the same act for proper spacing, aiming to swing right up the middle. Right as she was ready to send Yunli flying, Feixiao’s eyes shifted to see the blue streak flying at her. She quickly abandoned her ax in favor of her blades, smirking all the while as she blocked Yanqing; Yunli backstabbed out of reach immediately but her next move was hidden by the boy’s assault.
Flying swords swarmed around like insects but the real threat remained in their wielder. Sparks flew like chaotic fireworks as Yanqing kept pace against each blade strike. Left, right, low thrust, high parry, the boy showed his talents beautifully once again.
“Better be careful Jing Yuan. I might have to steal your pride for my troops at this rate.”
Yanqing did his best to break through her defenses, but to no avail. “Tsk! She’s not even struggling in the slightest!”
Feixiao forced Yanqing to jump after trying to sweep his legs. In that moment, he realized his mistake and blocked hastily as she spun around once for momentum and slammed both her blades against his. The strike sent the boy flying too fast for his swords to keep up. However, Yunli was much quicker.
Old Mettle was flying right at Feixiao while the girl was already airborne with her left arm stretched out. She broke nearly all of Yanqing’s momentum by tapping and pushing him up as he flew by. This was more than enough for him to recover midair and land only a few feet behind Yunli while Feixiao rolled out of Old Mettle’s way. Yunli ran to retrieve it while Yanqing closed in on Feixiao, who was trying to close in on Yunli!
March watched with bated breath as Yanqing’s flying swords made a curtain between Yunli and Feixiao long enough for her to retrieve her blade and instantly swat away the General. Both her masters lowered their stance and went in to attack but Feixiao suddenly dropped her weapons and put her hands up.
“Okay. That’s enough.”
The young warriors came to a dead stop, taking a breath in confusion. It was over already? Not only that, but Feixiao’s smile was rather cheeky and one of relief.
“The two of you have grown a bit. That makes me happy. I can leave without worry.”
“What the heck are you talking about!?” Yunli chastised, feeling underestimated. “I know we’re all injured but a short battle like this couldn’t have given much about our abilities.”
“I-I can go a little longer too!” Never mind the blatant pain his shoulder was in. He felt cheated too! Yet Feixiao could only laugh.
“Hehe, no need. As expected though. It looks like the both of you haven’t realized it. The youth sure is frightening sometimes. March, did you gleam anything significant?”
March: The disciple was beaming with joy, amazed by what she witnessed. “Absolutely! I hadn’t noticed with Hoolay but I wouldn’t be surprised if it was happening then too!”
Yunli was getting more annoyed. “Enough with the vagueness! What the heck are you talking about!?”
“Master Yanqing was way more aggressive than normal.” March explained. “He got up close when Master Yunli’s attack was completely blocked and didn’t stop. And instead of going back after that, she got distant and calmly waited for an opening to help him instead of going for a giant blow. It’s almost like-”
“We switched…fighting styles…” Yunli finished, slowly dreading the idea that Yanqing had actually influenced her.
He wasn’t too big on the idea either! “I mean- that’s natural in a group fight. If you don’t work together then everything goes wrong.”
Feixiao nodded in agreement. “You’re correct. Teamwork is crucial, especially against a stronger opponent. However, the choices you made weren’t simply two people who know the value of teamwork. The two of you were being mindful and considerate of one another.” She pointed at the boy. “Yanqing, did you choose close quarters simply to match Yunli’s pace, or was your intent to gain my intention fully so she can escape my ax and catch her breath?”
Yunli’s eyes went wide. She turned her head to stare at Yanqing. He was as rigid as stone as if he was caught red handed.”
“I-I…you’re formidable and strong!” He defended, his face darkening. “Yunli’s sword is heavier than your ax and takes time to swing. You don’t leave openings to recover, so…I made one for her.”
The girl was too stunned to speak. All she knew was her chest felt a little weird now, as if she had forgotten to breathe for a second.
“A clever approach.” Feixiao commended, before giving Yunli undivided attention. “Yunli! Did you hold back on immediately countering simply out of watching the spatial awareness between your blade and Yanqing, or was it something else? Something more important? Be honest now.” She grinned.
“...I stayed back because…” lying felt so good right now, yet for some reason Yunli felt as if it would be in vain. “I was waiting to catch him.” She admitted in defeat.
“Huh!?” Yanqing whipped his head in her direction. “What!?”
“Don’t act shocked! God you’re annoying! You said it yourself, she’s formidable! Not only is she quick but strong. If you landed too hard or wrong, there’s no telling if you would get up quickly.” Yunli crossed her arms for security. “I…I didn’t throw my sword because she was open. I threw it to make time to help your butt.”
And just like that, the truth was out. Feixiao continued making her point.
“Teamwork amongst soldiers tends to start with staying out of each other’s way, and ends at creating clear openings. What you two were doing is much more than simple teamwork. Your attacks, your actions, down to the thought process, it put each other's safety first and considered weaknesses that had to be covered. That’s not something achievable between people holding grudges.”
Grudges? Oh!” March remembered their first meeting. “General, you were still thinking about their fight at the Alchemy Commission!!?”
“Haha, of course! It was quite the spectacle after all. I had no doubt that in the face of a crisis like Hoolay, talented people like you would put aside such personal matters. To do it here though, after the danger has passed, now that’s truly something to cherish.”
The cunning ‘Lacking General’ approached the two swordsmen earnestly, seeing the conflicting looks on their faces . The youth always needed a little push in times like this.”
“At the risk of saying too much, I’ll make this part quick. From where I’m standing you two are now proper rivals and not comrades; instead you’re friends who care about each other mutually. Take joy in that. It’ll make you both stronger in more ways imaginable.”
Both of them fell silent, utterly embarrassed by how their actions were made known. They didn’t even notice it themselves!! All they could do was bow for Feixiao’s lesson. The Lacking General laughed as she ruffled their hair before taking her leave.
March could sense the awkwardness building between the two as they kept quiet. Now seemed like a good time to give them space, so she quickly pulled out her phone.
“Huh, look at that! Masters! I’m sorry but I have to go now! Looks like Caelus and Stelle got tangled up in more of Guinaifen’s performances!” She quickly got up and ran. “Let's grab lunch later!”
“Honestly, could she be any more obvious?” Yunli said bluntly.
“Hehe, right?” Yanqing tried rolling his shoulder, making himself wince immediately.
“...Hold still.” Yunli walked behind him and gently held his right shoulder. Feixiao really didn’t know how to hold back. That sparring match really was moments from a visit to Lingsha. Carefully, she moved his shoulder up and back until… pop! Back in place like it should be.
A quick spike in pain gave way to complete relief in seconds. “Th-Thanks. That feels much better.”
“Don’t mention-” she looked up to see him looking right at her, their faces mere inches away from each other. “…it”
The two fell silent again. Summoning all his courage. Yanqing opened his mouth to get straight to the source of this tension. “Yunli, I-” Her hand covered his mouth immediately.
“Don’t.” Blood was rushing to her face and her voice began to shake. “I’m not dumb and neither are you. So let’s not say anything we don’t already know. Not when I have to leave in a few days anyways…” She hated how sad the truth made her. What was so sad about it? Okay, she knew why, but WHY?!
Yanqing slowly took her hand away from his mouth. “Then, let me say this instead. Yunli, would you like to grab some breakfast with me?”
Such a random change in priorities. It wasn’t subtle at all and yet, so fitting for him. Yunli was annoyed it snapped her out of her funk.
“Going for my stomach now? How sneaky of you.” How dare he make her smile. “I’ll take you up on that offer. If you’re buying that is.”
“Of course. Try not to drain my savings too much.”
“Please, you would just put it towards more swords to buy and not use. This is a much better use.”
They both shared a chuckle before making their way towards the exit. Softly, Yanqing felt a tug on his right sleeve. Yunli had quietly taken ownership of it with her thumb and pointer finger pinching the cuff as they walked. Yanqing looked at her to see she was completely avoiding looking back, choosing to look straight ahead with crimson blush burning her cheeks again. Yanqing felt his only face get hot as he turned his head back around in silence. Feixiao’s words rang in their head.
“Friends who cared about each other mutually.”
Next they saw her, they’d have to thank her for sparring them with a little dignity.
Chapter Text
After such an eventful morning, a quiet breakfast in Arruem Alley had a way of evening out the mood. At least, that’s what Yunli wanted to believe. Instead the meal she shared with Yanqing was more akin to awkward and palpable silence. In all fairness however, she wasn’t that big on chatting when good food was ready to be devoured. Sadly it didn’t distract her from the boy sitting across from her.
She had been watching him for some time now, in between bites. God, he was so irritating without even trying. Yunli expected her time on the Loufu to be eventful, educational, and interesting above all else. All that came in spades. To say she experienced a little too much would be an understatement, but what got her was how without trying, she kept learning unnecessary things. The way Yanqing tapped his chopsticks for good luck before eating was one of said things. She could speak on why he let his hair down in moments of rest like this, because otherwise he’ll get a headache throughout the day. They’ve been around each other so much that she’s even picked up on how he eats using his left despite his right being his dominant sword arm. Jing Yuan must’ve drilled that habit into him yet failed or didn’t even bother to extend that lesson to the table.
So many individual and insignificant little details about the young lieutenant she’s accumulated in such a short time. Truly she had no use for them, and yet knowing them didn’t feel all that bad.
A waitress came to the table with a refill of tea for him. “Here you are.” She said politely.
Yunli only took a glance at it while he was busy eating. “No lemon slice.” She said blatantly, staring at it.
“Pardon?”
“He ordered his first tea without the lemon slice. You forgot to remove it.”
The waitress looked at his empty glass and did in fact notice the lack of a lemon slice. “Oh. My apologies.”
“It’s not your fault you were given a customer who would ask for lemon tea but want no lemon slice. Most people are normal.”
Yanqing couldn’t even be bothered to argue back. “Don’t worry about it. I’m actually full.” He told the waitress. Yanqing took the tea and slid it over to Yunli. If he could count on her for anything, it was finishing his food. The drink was taken without a single ‘thank you’ to be given! He had half a mind to only pay for his meal. It was fortunate for her that he didn’t want to make the waitress work harder for no reason. That and he was a little happy Yunli spoke up about the drink.
“I am going insane if that’s the bar for gratitude.” He gave her the exact credit amount upfront and hid an additional tip under his plate before taking Yunli away by the hand.
Between the drink in her hand and the sudden departure, she didn’t bother taking back the hand he stole.
“Where are we going? Kidnapping is illegal y’know?” She still wasn’t going to free her hand.
“Is it kidnapping if we’re the same age?”
“I’m older than you.” A correction Yanli was quick to make. “Granted the gap isn’t that wide at all, but you should still show some respect.”
“The gap in our age is smaller than the divide between our ranks, and yet I don’t ever remember getting a hint of respect.”
“You might be a lieutenant, but last time I checked, you are not my lieutenant. Get over yourself.”
“Would you say that about the General?” Yanqing smiled smugly, looking over his shoulder at her. “Sounds immature if you ask me.”
Okay, she might’ve walked into that one. Doesn’t mean she was about to back down! “Pfft, please! It’s like grandpa always says. ‘Ranks and titles are only made to divide us. We are all Cloud Knights.’” She laughed at her own gruff imitation. “Out with it already.”
“Nowhere too particular. Just a spot out of the way. There’s not many people up yet but plenty keep looking at us.”
No shit. He was holding her hand and these ‘watchful people’ are street vendors! Now in her heart she completely understood that Yanqing is the complete opposite of shrewd or even smooth for that matter, so why was her brain thinking of every shameful reason to want privacy!?
“The hell is wrong with me today!?” Yunli shook her head violently, trying to dispel all unnecessary thoughts.
They finally stopped around what appeared to be a cargo area. It was unlikely most people had authorization to be here. The ones who did were still enjoying their sleep or on the cusp of starting their day. Either way, it was a quiet little spot with a perfect view for Starskiff gazing. Yanqing rested his arms on the railing and admired the scenery. Not wanting to talk much, Yunli followed his lead while occasionally stealing glances at the boy.
“So” he finally said, “are we going to talk about earlier this morning?”
“I’m pretty sure we agreed not to say anything stupid or obvious.” Her heart was racing. “We get along better than before. Simple as that.”
If only it were that simple. Yanqing watched the ship pass by as the girl to his right looked away from him. To save face. “It might be obvious, but some things are so important that they should be spoken aloud.” He took a calm breath, still admiring the view. “I like you.”
Honest, simple, and straightforward. It’s the only way he could think of without messing up. Yanqing turned his head to see Yunli, and realized he still might’ve done just that. The girl’s face was beet red as she grumbled softly and stared at him with eyes narrowed like an unamused cat. He slowly turned his head to look in the complete opposite direction despite nobody being there.
“Y-You can go ahead and hit me if you want.” He knew the risks. He’ll take the blow.
Why was he like this! Yunli hadn’t felt her face get this hot since trying one of Jiaoqiu’s dishes. Here they were in moderately comfortable silence and Yanqing just had to go and do something dumb! Fine, fine! If that’s the case, then she might as well be dumb too!
“Face me.” She ordered. “I don’t want to hit your injured arm.
At least she was considerate. Though a gut punch might be worse considering how sore he was. Still, he complied and faced her. “Would it be too much to ask if you held ba-”
All thoughts were erased as he felt warm, gentle lips press against his own. His body was frozen stiff but his face began to heat up like a stove top.
The kiss lasted only a few seconds. Long enough for Yunli to burn through all her confidence before turning around and leap away like a stray cat that is free to come and go. At least that was the plan away. Her feet made it off the ground, but her left wrist was caught by the boy; Yunli felt her body yank back towards the floor where she fell face first alongside Yanqing with a substantial thud. They both groaned as they got up slowly.
“That didn’t go as planned.” She immediately got pissed when she noticed Yanqing rubbing his arm in pain. “For the love of- I’m starting to think you don’t want to get better!”
“It was a reflex! Nobody told you to run away!”
“Nobody told you to grab me! God, you are so annoying! Why couldn’t you leave well enough alone!? Let me run off and have this moment!?!”
“Because I didn’t even get to kiss you back!” He blurted out recklessly.
“Wha- th- you-” the girl was too stunned to speak. How could someone be so irritating and charming at once!? Yanqing was developing a knack for saying correct things at terrible times and she was not a fan!
“Well…” Yunli gave up, throwing up her hands aggressively. “I’m still here, aren’t I?” What the heck was she thinking? Was she even thinking anymore!? Right now she didn’t care. Yanqing got closer to her again and didn’t even bother saying anything before leaning down and kissing her properly. Unlike him, Yunli was quick to kiss him back. Her arms draped over his shoulders gently and she felt her heels come off the ground as Yanqing wrapped his arms around her back.
Yunli couldn’t believe after all her accomplishments, after all the beasts she had personally taken down, that somehow her body would tremble anxiously in such a quiet moment with someone she didn’t find threatening in the slightest. Slowly, their lips broke apart after what was a significantly longer kiss than the first one. Yunli saw that Yanqing clearly shared the same level of embarrassment as she did; his face might even be redder. She couldn’t tell since her eyes quickly avoided his gaze.
“You stink at kissing.” She pouted, still in his arms.
He chuckled awkwardly. He wasn’t sure if she meant that genuinely or saving face. “I’ve never had practice.” He said, a little more somber than he meant to. “Maybe that might change though?”
His arms held her a little closer, causing Yunli’s heart to skip. Deep down, she was beginning to blame his teacher for this unique charm Yanqing seems to have developed. Even so, Yunli was not easily swayed. She gently left his embrace before turning around with her arms folded.
“Who knows what the future holds?” She answered, beginning to walk away. “I have to go. Grandpa should be getting up now and wondering about me.” This morning was far more eventful than she was expecting.
“May I walk you home?” His words were calm and genuine. He didn’t expect Yanli to actually stop her pace.
Now she was certain this was Jing Yuan’s fault. With a sigh of defeat, she reached out her right hand without looking back. A couple seconds later and it was held comfortably in his. They continued walking in a silence that was just as comfortable.
“How did things get so out of hand?” She lamented, replaying his confession in her brain. Her heart was pounding again. “And why don’t I hate it!?”
Yanqing could clearly see the mental gymnastics she was performing. Not that he didn’t have his own, but watching Yunli’s made him smile and hold in any laughter. They were in the same boat. There’s peace in that.

The demons in me art telling me I should change the rating on this and add a third chapter. Or maybe I’ll just make a continuation.
Chapter Text
“In all my years I’ve seen many unexpected sights.” General Huaiyan stated, stroking his beard as he chuckled. “However, this one climbs the ranks.”
Yanli stared at him with mild irritation. She had planned to arrive at the inn before he set out for the day, but instead he had met her at the front door with Yanqing still beside her. Thank the stars they had stopped holding hands before they turned the corner.
“Grandpa, you’re making a fuss about nothing.”
“If you say so.” He truly did not buy anything she was about to sell. “Hello Yanqing.”
“Morning sir. I trust you slept well?”
“Yes, this place has been more than pleasant. Yanli had told me The Merlin’s Claw had wanted to see her bright and early. I take it that she called for you too.” He could see the slightest wear on their clothes as well as how they carried themselves restlessly. “Looks like you survived it, again.”
“Nothing gets past you. It was far less stressful this time around. Anyways, I just thought I’d walk and talk with Yunli on the way back before going home myself.”
“I did hear Jing Yuan gave you some well deserved time off. I doubt he expected you to spend the beginning of it fighting.”
Yanqing could see the look on his master’s face clearly in his head. “I don’t know. I think he wouldn’t be surprised at all hehe.”
“You laugh now, until you can’t move that arm of yours for a while.” Yunli chastised. “Keep it up and Lingsha is going to make you recover all by yourself.”
“You would know.” He retorted, earning a squint before the girl turned her nose up at him and huffed.
Huaiyan enjoyed seeing these two so lively. A crisis like Hoolay has a way of wearing down a person’s soul. Looks like he was worried for nothing. “Yunli is correct. Now’s the time for proper rest. I have errands to see through still, but by all means, feel free to come inside if you’d like. There’s still enough breakfast left for the both of you.”
“That’s very kind, but we already ate.”
His beard and mustache hid a slight grin. “Did you now?” He glanced over at his granddaughter, who had grown tired of this little interaction.
“Okay.” She spoke up, heading inside. “I’m actually tired so I’m going to lay down. Grandpa, I’ll see you when you get back. Yanqing, I guess I’ll see you tomorrow.”
“Tomorrow?” He tilted his head at her. “March said she wanted to have lunch together. You’ll see me in several hours.”
Moments like these made her want to push the air. How did she forget March said that!? At this rate she’d end up spending the entire day with Yanqing! “She did say that, didn’t she?”
Yanqing could tell Yunli wanted to throw something. Now was a good time to make sure it wasn’t him. “I’m sure she will text later. Bye for now.” He moved like a brisk breeze, heading to his home for some time to decompress.
With him gone, Huaiyan finally allowed himself to laugh a little louder. He looked at Yunli again, noticing the way her face was flushed throughout the conversation as well as how docile she had been. “Everything okay?”
“I just need a nap.” She looked at him only to receive a quiet look. “What?” She prepared for the mountain teases and not so baseless assumptions.
“It’s nice to see you thrive instead of simply living.” His voice carried earnesty in every word. “This trip has been good to you.”
She hated to admit it, but he was right. Catastrophe aside, things felt good here. The crazy parts weren’t that bad either. After all, those were the moments where her and Yanqing-
“Tsk.” She clicked her tongue. He had left moments ago and she was already thinking of him!? Unacceptable! “I’m gonna go lay down.”
With no further words, Yunli went inside and headed straight for her room. Her head dove face first into her pillows where she let out pent up emotions with a drawn out groan.
“I only have to make it through lunch. No big deal.” She sunk deeper into the mattress. “There’s three of us. Masters and student. Nothing weird about that.”

“Oh wow!” March said in utter amazement. “Master Yanqing, your clothes! Your hair?”
The young man wore a yellow, oversized sleeveless shirt that hung a little past the beltline of dark red shorts. The high ponytail he was known for was ditched for a long braid that draped over his left shoulder.
“What about them?” He asked genuinely. “Don’t think it suits me?”
“That’s not it. I’ve just never seen you look your age! I didn’t even know you had other clothes!”
“March, why wouldn’t-” he didn’t even have the energy to finish his question. The boy sighed and said, “I’m on leave. These are casual clothes. Wearing my other clothes could cause a Cloud Knight to come up for me for a variety of reasons.”
“Oh. Here I thought you were the type to help even off the clock.”
“I am!” Yanqing clarified. “If it’s a real emergency then of course I’d step in. I typically wouldn’t mind helping anytime but I’m sure the general would scold me.”
“That makes a lot more sense. Mr. Yang is like that too. It usually takes Miss Himeko stepping in to make him put his feet up.”
Yanqing hasn’t had too many personal encounters with the two, yet from the limited experience he had with Mr. Yang, it wasn’t hard to imagine that dynamic at all. “Yunli.” He called, snapping her out of her quiet trance. “You okay?”
The eyes of both him and March made blush rush to her cheeks. “I-I’m just hungry. C’mon you two. Our table won’t wait forever.” She stormed off ahead of them. In truth, Yanqing’s outfit also caught her by surprise. Especially the braid. “He has to be doing this on purpose!” Her imagination knows no bounds.
“Is she okay?” March asked her other master. He gave no reply as he started walking to the table. “Don’t tell me you two are fighting, again!”
Sometimes March wasn’t sure if was a student or guardian. If she was being honest with herself, a part of her did feel like Yanqing’s big sister. It was hard not to dote or worry over him after everything he’s been through. Not to mention their affinity for ice. She had hoped giving them space in the ring early would lead to a better relationship between him and Yunli, so why do things seem more tense than before!? Even their appetites felt off. Well, mainly Yanqing. Yunli was feasting like a king.
“Yanqing, are you sure you only want a salad? Growing is pretty hard if that's the only thing.”
“My breakfast was pretty heavy.” He noticed Yunli’s hand twitching from his wording. “Also I enjoy a light lunch. Don’t worry. I already have an idea on what I want for dinner.”
“Diligent as always.” March turned to look at Yunli enjoying a meat bun bigger than her head. “And in this corner, I have the exact opposite concern.” She said dryly.
Yunli took offense! She was eating a normal amount. “Do you think lifting more than a thousand pounds is pure skill?” She placed the bun on the table, causing all the drinks to shake. “You have to feed that type of strength. If I only had a salad then the wind would knock me over like lil Yanqing overhear.”
“I didn’t even say anything!”
March never thought about how their diet might influence their swordplay. “I wonder, could you use flying swords if you had such a hardy meal plan.”
Yanqing laughed at the thought. “Not a chance. Flying would be impossible.”
“Oh.” Yunli said, crossing her arms and narrowing her eyes. “Are you saying your swords would struggle to carry me?”
His laughter stopped quickly. “What? No!” He could see the anger festering in her eyes. “That’s not what I meant at all!”
“Then what did you mean, wise guy?”
“I’d be nauseous! A giant meal before flipping and speeding around in the sky would be no different from going to an amusement park. No way my stomach could handle that.”
“Hmmm I guess that response was too quick for it to be a lie. Not even you are that cunning.”
Yanqing rolled his eyes. “That’s your reasoning? How about the fact I’m above attacking someone’s weight? Too bad I can’t say the same about you and my height.” He huffed, taking a bite of salad. “It wouldn’t even make sense to begin with! No doubt you weigh less than me. I could carry you”
“That’s not so impressive when I can throw you.”
“Throwing me isn’t impressive! I’m like one tenth the weight of Old Mettle. It would be concerning if you couldn’t throw me.”
And just like that, they were bickering again. “Thank goodness.” March spoke softly, smiling. Both her masters stopped to look her way. “You two were weirdly silent for a while. I was worried you two were actually mad at each other for some reason.”
“I’m mad at this guy all the time. I mean, it’s him.” Yunli smirked as he gave her a side eye.
“Yeah, but it felt different. I gave you guys space after our match with Feixiao. I don’t know; maybe I thought something bad had happened.”
Ah yes, that’s what was troubling her. Both the swordsman rubbed the back of their heads. Looks like they weren’t doing a good job acting like nothing happened. How could they!? This was uncharted territory. However, Yanqing was sure of one thing.
“Nothing bad happened.” He looked at Yunli, who seemed taken aback. Now he was feeling the pressure. “Right?”
“Don’t ask that now!” She felt her heart beating faster. “No, nothing bad happened at all.” She reached for her food to hide her face. By the looks of it, her answer dispelled a certain look of anxiety in not just March, but Yanqing as well. Did he actually care about her answer? Was he freaking out like her? He definitely didn’t show it.
The rest of the meal was pretty calm and so were their topics. However, March’s comment on eating choices turned into against her the moment the two masters agreed to write up a meal plan for their student. Losing out on midnight snacking was a heavy blow to her. Fortunately she talked them out of it by paying for lunch before quickly leaving. Once again, it was the two masters walking away from their meal together towards busy foot traffic.
Yunli couldn’t be mad at March’s intuition. The tension between her and Yanqing was enough to make her plan a swift exit too. “See ya tomorrow.” She turned normally this time instead of jumping. Somehow, deep down inside, Yunli knew this idiot would grab her wrist again.
“Hold on.” He said in one breath.
Why was escaping so hard today!? “Ugh, you are so determined to not let sleeping dogs rest. What now!?”
Yanqing averted her gaze. “I- well I uh, wanted to know if you had any plans later on tonight.”
“Whhhhhyyyyy?” Seeing him hesitate only served to make her nerves restless. “Out with it.”
“Remember what I said earlier about having dinner plans in mind? The idea was to cook something, and have you eat it too.” His voice shook a bit, hating how that all came out. He tried again but faster. “Let me cook for you!”
“That is- we just had lunch!”
“Are you telling me you don’t think about food after eating a meal?!”
“Shut up!” Yanqing was absolutely right, but didn’t need to know that. “Why do I have to be there exactly?”
“My cooking isn’t bad but if anyone’s pallet is going to tell me everything that’s wrong, it’s yours.”
He wasn’t wrong, but Yunli wasn’t buying it. “Try again.”
“Fine, I want to spend time with you. Satisfied!?” He huffed, staring at her dead in the eyes.
“Why did I let him try again?” Yunli could feel the warmth return to her face. She was beginning to understand that Yanqing’s earnestness was hard to counter. “We have spent all day together.” This was her only line of defense.
“Then what’s a few more hours?” He stepped closer. “I don’t know about you, but leaving things odd like this is gonna stay in my head.”
“We are long life species. We’re bound to have one or two things unresolved for a while, or forever even! Besides, I am going home soon. There’s no time to unpack everything!”
“All the more reason to start. Don’t pretend like both of our masters don’t preach living without regrets; especially since our lives are so long.” He let go of her wrist. “I don’t want to regret this by doing nothing.”
Point after point, he found another opening that derailed a rebuttal. In truth, Yunli didn’t hate anything he was saying. She just couldn’t believe it was being said in the first place!
“Yanqing, be honest with me.” Aeons, she just knew her face had to be bright red by now. “Are you trying to kiss me again?” She mumbled, fearing someone would overhear.
“N-No! That’s not the goal!” He stuttered. “Not the main one. I mean it crossed my mind but I swear I’m asking to spend more time with you outright. Honest!”
It’s not that she didn’t believe him, but what boy wouldn’t have that hope in the back of their head in this situation? The confident and cocky attitude she was used to seeing on his face was replaced with a novice completely unsure of their decisions. Yet, deep in his eyes, Yunli could tell none of that uncertainty was about wanting to see her in the first place. Yanqing really was too earnest for her own good.
Yunli sighed in defeat, bested by the boy’s words. “I’m gonna judge your food so hard. It better be worth the trip.”
Yanqing’s eyes lit up. “No worries. It’ll be worth it.”
“I’ll be the judge of that! Also don’t get your hopes up about anything other than eating and hanging out. You won’t walk all over me.”
“Haha, I wouldn’t dream of it.” He smiled.
Damn his casual clothes. “If he had his annoying ponytail then I would’ve stood a better chance.” She rationalized to herself, as he began to walk off. “You’re leaving just like that!?”
“Duh! You can’t exactly eat if I don’t start buying and cooking. I’ll text you the address now.”
That last part stuck out to her. “Hold on, I know where the general lives. You’re his retainer.”Yanqing stopped, turning around with a grin she found personally concerning for some reason. “What?”
“Did you forget I’m Lieutenant of the Cloud Knights? I get paid like one. Enough for an apartment anyway. General Jing Yuan doesn’t need me to live with him. He says it’s for independence but honestly I think he was tired of me waking him up early when I was younger; back before I could even enlist. Anyways, see ya tonight!”
Just like that, the boy was gone into the crowd. Yunli could only stand completely still as that information process.
“Ah, I see.” Her heart rate doubled. “Yanqing lives alone.”

Chapter Text
How in the cosmos did things spiral into such madness. Today started with a simple test of skills and growth between aspiring swordsmen after a fierce conflict that would be written in Cloud Knight history. Now Yunli was brushing her hair in preparation to meet an annoying peer with a slightly appealing face.
“It’s just a dinner. Simple dinner that he’s making. For me. Alone.” Her mind quickly betrayed her like the blush on her cheeks. “Ugh! Quit making something out of nothing! Yunli, focus!” She clapped both sides of her face, using the slight sting to jolt her senses.
Yanqing had given her the location of his home and it was about time to leave. Night seemed to have come quicker than she expected. The entire day had been a blur the more Yunli thought about it on the way downstairs. “Grandpa.” She called, spotting his shadow in the kitchen. “I’m going out. I’ll try not to be out too late.”
“I don’t mind.” He said casually, walking to the front door to catch a glimpse of Yunli’s shocked expression. “What? The Loufu is safe and you’re no pushover. Stay out as long as you like. Just don’t get into trouble. A man my age needs a certain amount of sleep to remain in high spirits.”
Surely this couldn’t be a coincidence, right? Grandpa was always lax with her and his words weren’t out of the ordinary. Still, of all the nights to say them. Perhaps she was thinking too much?
“You sure you don’t need me for anything later on?”
“Ha! I’m old, not feeble. It’s still far too soon for you to be worrying about my capabilities. Ask again after besting me in a match one day.
“Oh believe me, that day isn’t far off now!” Yunli laughed. “Give me a couple of years and I will knock your socks off!”
“I’ll hold you to it.” The doting grandfather patted his fiery granddaughter on the head before taking his leave. “As long as you continue to grow and face new experiences with earnest resolve, I’ll have no doubt you’ll climb even higher than Yingxing.”
Now that was a name seldom mentioned. The fact that he said it so casually widened Yunli’s eyes and kept her grandfather’s words close to her heart. Perhaps this trip really has been fruitful for both of them in ways they could’ve never imagined? One thing was for certain now. The General was giving her the freedom to make her own choices; genuine, honest to goodness choices on how to conduct herself. Even if he wasn’t completely certain about what those choices might be. Either way, Yunli felt calmer than she had all day. With one final deep breath, she left to see Yanqing.

Knock Knock Knock
Three powerful knocks from a girl who had thought she was over her nerves. Unfortunately they found her again on the long walk to his place. It wasn’t exactly out of the way, but the streets here were rather spacious and Yunli could tell the homes either had decent sized backyards, or were like Yanqing’s place, which was facing away from a huge bamboo thicket. The area was most likely the perfect out of the way training ground for many Cloud Knights.
“Seems like he’s more of an outdoor person than I realized. Training here is pretty old school.”
Her thoughts ended when she saw the doorknob twist. It swung inwards and revealed the boy on the other side.
“Hello. Right on time.” He grinned, his mind in the middle of juggling a few tasks.
Whatever nerves that plagued Yunli quickly vanished as she didn’t expect to see Yanqing with his hair up again while wearing a yellow apron that depicted Jing Yuan’s Lightning Lord. “You are such a dweeb in the most unexpected ways.” Yunli couldn’t help but chuckle at the blonde.
“That’s an interesting way of showing gratitude.” He rolled his eyes playfully and stepped aside, allowing her in. “Most guests at least wait until they’re inside before cracking jokes at the host’s expense.”
“Consider it a preemptive strike.” A barrage of herbs and spices dulled her abrasive attitude ever so slightly. Yunli looked upon a table filled with potstickers, meat buns, several rice dishes, and more! “The food is done already!?”
“Duh.” Yanqing closed the door and made his way back into the kitchen. “Why would I give you a time that would have you wait? I just finished setting everything so by all means, help yourself.”
“I sorta assumed you’d ask for a little help or I don’t know, a set dish.” She grabbed a potsticker and popped it in her mouth like it wasn’t steaming hot.
Yanqing found that mildly concerning. “How is your tongue not burnt right now?” His question was completely ignored as Yunli began to squint at him. “W-what? Is it that bad?”
“You are such a try hard.” Yunli popped another in her mouth. “These are annoyingly delicious. Not the best I’ve had but I’m not gonna lie to you, I might eat all of these.”
“Hehe, I did say help yourself. Do me a favor though and actually sit down. I know the Zhuming have their own customs but I’m pretty sure we share table manners.”
“Sure thing, old man. I swear you sound like grandpa right now.”
“I’ll take that as a compliment.” Yanqing brought her all the cutlery she might need before already getting work done on some dishes.
“Ummm hey?” Yunli pointed at him with her chopsticks. “Don’t you know it’s rude to not eat with a guest? Also, I may have an appetite, but you better not tell me you honestly expect me to eat this spread all by myself!?”
For someone who sounded offended, Yanqing found it hard to take that question seriously with Yunli’s plate already stacked high and missing a sizable chunk. Nevertheless, he undid his hair again before cleaning himself up to join her.
“So I take it you don’t hate my cooking?”
“Don’t get too excited. As long as nothing actually tastes disgusting, I can eat it.” Yunli took a sip of ice tea he prepared. Figures he’d have a knack for the drink. “All that sad, your food isn’t half bad at all. Didn’t take you for a chef.”
“I’m not. I get bored of the same meals and the general didn’t always have much time to cook so I often read a few recipes. Having someone to try them out aside from myself is a nice change of pace.” Yanqing smiled with satisfaction.
There he goes being dumb again. “If that’s the case then I guess one good act deserves another. I can handle the dishes.”
“Oh you don’t-”
“I said I can handle it and I will.” She said firmly, huffing as she took another bite of her meal. “This could be spicier.”
“I’m no Mr. Jiaoqiu when it comes to that sort of thing.”
“Oh I know. If you were, I might've thought twice about showing up. Sneaking poison into some of my favorite dishes for an edge in combat against me would be a new low.”
“When have I ever- you make me sound so despicable to you!”
Oh if only Yanqing understood the sway he had. Warm amber eyes that held curiosity with every glance. The way his nose crinkled each time she upset him made his attitude charming. Then there was his hair. Goodness, his hair. Yunli couldn’t help but be a little envious yet mesmerized by its glow. All these things were despicable indeed. Yunli couldn’t help but feel her face grow warm as Yanqing awaited a response. Yunli couldn’t stop herself from retreating by gazing at her plate.
“You’re more than despicable.” She mumbled. “You’re down right playing dirty.”
Yanqing wasn’t sure why, but he understood Yunli’s words weren’t mean spirited. In fact, they brought a small grin to his face. One that didn’t go unnoticed.
“The heck are you smiling at”
“Nothing~” he teased, gaining a little amusement. Yunli wolfed down the rest of her plate then got up to take it, and his to the sink. “Hey! I wasn’t finished!”
“Too bad!” She yelled, never looking back. “It’s scraps. You’ll live.”
Yanqing didn’t fret over it. Instead he got up and walked into the connected living room where his nice red silk couch rested in front of the tv on top of the media center shelf Jing Yuan helped him build.
“Yunli? Are you big on movies?”
“I could go either way. Depends on the movie I guess.”
“Seven Samurai?” He suggested, holding his copy.
“I am a sword smith to the great General Huaiyan.” She said with a heavy sigh. “I’ve seen that movie to death.”
“That’s fair. Then how about something more modern?”
Yunli stopped doing the dishes. “Wait a sec.” She uttered to herself, turning her head to see Yanqing looking at his movie collection. “Oh you’re actually picking a movie!?”
Suddenly Yanqing felt a kick to his confidence. “Y-Yes? I figured since you were here…but if you planned on going home right after dinner then I can-”
“No!” She shouted accidentally. Great, now she looked too enthusiastic. “I mean… I have nowhere to be. Took a nap earlier so I’m not exactly tired.”
“Hehe, same. I rested before I started cooking. Honestly I could watch anything, so pick whatever you’d like.”
“Do my ears deceive me?” Yunli smirked at the chance to put Yanqing on the back foot. “It kinda sounds like you want me to stay longer? Afraid I was planning to dine and dash?” She watched his face turn a delightful shade of pink.
“Of- of course not!” He stumbled over his words. “I’m being hospitable!”
“Oooooh, so you don’t want me here?”
“Of course I do!” He blurted out involuntarily, stunning them both. “Ummm yes, yes I want you here. With me.” His own honesty flustered him. Was there really a need to be direct!? Yunli was obviously messing with him.
What started as fun teasing quickly turned into butterflies in Yunli’s gut. It would seem blatant honesty was Yanqing’s weapon when backed into a corner. How convenient; Yunli was never good at defending such attacks. Best not to go too hard on the offensive for her own sake.
The young lady rubbed the back of her head, her mind scrambling. “I-I’m fine with whatever movie you pick. Nothing ghost related though.”
“Oh?” His head tilted. “Afraid of ghost stories.”
“Ha! As if. I hear enough tales of ancient curses and body possession. It’s the last thing I need to watch in my downtime.”
Yanqing was a little familiar with Yunli’s past, or rather, her ambitious goals. Her tone sounded a little annoyed as she mentioned it, her eyes slightly losing as if she was staring at a memory before snapping back to the present. Best not to pry. Instead, he walked back to the shelf of movies and picked at random. After placing it in the player, he cut off the lights. The rest of the dishes could be dealt with another time.
“Make yourself comfortable.” He said casually, walking to the stair chair that led to the second level of his home. “I’ll be right back.”
“Okay?” Yunli took the far left corner of the couch. The bluish light from the tv was the only source of light illuminating the cozy living room, as well as noise from a movie with mechanical life forms with the ability to transform. It might’ve been more interesting if her brain wasn’t painfully distracted.
Yanqing finally came back down several minutes later with two separate blankets. “Sorry for the wait. Here, catch.” He tossed over the orange blanket while he kept the blue. “I tend to like it cold in here at night.”
“Thanks.” And just when she thought she had gotten used to how his home shared his scent. “Here I thought you went to take a shower.”
“I did freshen up a little. Cooking is messy work. Last thing I want to deal with is oil stains and smudges all over the place.”
“Didn’t take you for such a clean freak.”
“All I did was clean my hands. You’d probably be disgusted with upstairs.”
“Hmmm, knowing you, I’m guessing it has nothing to do with clothes” Yunli squinted. “ Let me guess, too many swords and not enough space?” She didn’t even need to confirm it. The look of guilt said it all. Yunli clicked her tongue.
“Cut me some slack! They’re in wracks or properly stored.” Yanqing scratched the back of his head. “It’s just a little cramped in some places.”
“You really are spoiled for choice. Honestly, what good does it do you to win the one at the war dance? It’s only going to collect dust.” She turned her nose up at him.
“Untrue! I have a rotation for my blades. Also…” Yanqing looked at tv. “I heard you had a hand in making this one. No doubt it’s high quality.”
Perfect. More genuine flattery. Yunli wanted to hide her face in the blanket, but the darn thing smelled like the idiot flustering her!
“You could hardly count that sword as one of my pieces. While I did help with the flame control and ore, it’s absolutely more my grandpa’s style.”
“Still want it.”
“Heh, course you do.” It was honestly impressive how much his love of swords rivaled her own in some ways.
The two of them fell silent, focusing on the movie. At least that was supposed to be the intent. Yunli struggled to focus on it, occasionally stealing glances at the boy across the catch who did the same, but a little more discreetly than her. Yunli couldn’t figure this situation out. Yanqing had obviously gone through the effort to not only invite her to his home at night, but went as far as to make a situation for her to stay after dinner. Surely he didn’t actually want to watch the movie, right?
“I know I called him out earlier for hoping to get another kiss. That didn’t scare him off, did it? No, no that can’t be it. Am I misreading the situation?” Yunli couldn’t help but feel a little embarrassed. Why was she feeling a little disappointed? Did she want him to make a move that badly?
“It’s not like you to keep your thoughts to yourself.” Yanqing said, noticing the various shifts in Yunli’s expressions. He kept his gaze on the tv. “I’m not a mind reader by any means and I’m definitely no expert in these situations. So instead of assuming things and overstepping, the next move is all yours.”
His cards were on the table just like that. Part of Yunli wanted to criticize him. To think he had essentially gotten cold feet after doing this much was unbelievable. The fact she came over was to her, a pretty big sign that she was interested in how today’s events unfolded. Another part of her heart however, was grateful for his hesitation. Yanqing had considered her feelings by stopping at setting the tone. Like he said, the next move was hers. It removed the possibility that he might be sweeping her up in the moment of something she wasn’t keen about. A smart but cheeky choice. How could she not respect it?
Yunli chuckled, “Ha. How cruel, making a girl be so bold at a time like this.”
She got out from under the blanket and stood up. Step by step, she walked over to him until he could no longer see the screen. Yunli took his blanket to drape over her shoulders before stepping forward. She watched Yanqing’s cheeks grow pink as she brought up each leg to settle her knees beside his hips as sat down, straddling him. Yunli put her arms and the blanket around his shoulders as she stared directly in his eyes.
“Is this clear enough for you?”
Yanqing held her hips. “Could be clearer.”
“Oh shut up.”
!!!!
They both leaned in, severing part of the tension they felt since she got here. The slight pressure she felt against her lips as he pressed gently into the kiss emboldened her, while his arms wrapped around her back made her body want to melt. Nobody was around to interrupt. Unlike before, they could take their time with this. The break in their kiss was fleeting, the both of them eager to begin again with a little more confidence. In no time at all, their kisses ceased to feel innocent. Nobody could point fingers on who started it, but somehow their tongues got a little involved, grazing one another occasionally as they tried to steal air when possible.
Yanqing shifted their weight and turned left, allowing Yunli to fall on soft cushions and bringing him down on top of her. He somehow managed to resist her lips long enough to softly kiss her neck, earning a wistful sigh. Her hands held the sides of his face and brought his attention back to her beautiful eyes that held worry.
“You okay?” He asked, seeing her flustered face.
“Mmhm. It’s just umm, can we stick with lots of kisses and touches? I-I don’t think I’m prepared for…you know.” It was taking everything in her to not tremble. She didn’t want to ruin this moment or disappoint him. “S-Sorry.”
“Oh don’t be. You’re fine.” He quickly kissed her forehead before smiling gently. “It’s probably for the best that neither of us don’t do anything that has our masters giving us a long lecture. It’s not like I have a condom on me anyway.” He laughed, knowing full well General Huaiyan would definitely have some words for him.
Yunli knew that nervous laughter anywhere. “You’re thinking my grandpa would kill you, aren’t you?”
“Am I wrong?”
“I’m sure you’d live, barely.” She smiled, feeling more at ease again. “Now do us both a favor and stop thinking about him. There’s more important things in front of you~” Her arms pulled him back down slowly.
“Heh, now who’s the spoiled one?”
Their lips reunited and Yunli’s hands began playing with Yanqing’s hair, undoing his ponytail almost immediately so that her fingers could properly run through golden strands. The weight he put on her calmed her mind further. She might as well have been in a trance, her thoughts focusing solely on their little make out session.
Yanqing was no better. Yunli had him on cloud nine. Not only were her kisses just as passionate as his own, but the crisp floral scent that came from her made it impossible to stay away. Then there were her noises. Yanqing went back to worshiping her neck to hear sweet gasps and feel her body shiver. He got so lost in it he gently sunk his teeth into the tender flesh.
“Ah~” Air rushed into her lungs before she bit her bottom lip, silencing herself. “That’s cheating.” She whined, causing Yanqing to keep playing with her newfound sensitive spot. Her own body betrayed her words by keeping his head right where it was against her skin. His growing boldness told Yunli everything about his desires. Respectful of her decision or not, it was hard to ignore the fact Yanqing’s body was reacting to her touches. She found leverage to roll over and put herself back on top of him, finding the will to sit up straight.
“Don’t stare too much.” Yunli properly removed her tiara, which was already hanging on for dear life, and put it aside over a couple feet away along with her chest ornament. Her hood, sleeves, and wrist pieces were far quicker to get rid of. She stopped once she removed the white fabric hiding her black top. Her attention shifted back to Yanqing, causing her to blush. “Didn’t I say not to stare!?”
Yanqing was positive he didn’t blink once until right this moment. “How could I not?” He said in awe of her.
“F-Focus!” She huffed, feeling her heart flutter again. Yunli was never insecure about her appearance but having him admire her was more than she could take. “I thought you’d follow my lead naturally but clearly not. It’s only fair that you take off just as much.”
Yanqing watched her hand grab his shirt and tug it off with a little help from him. With that tossed to the growing pile of clothes, Yunli laid on top of him again and went back to stealing his breath away before he could say anything about this newfound warmth between them.
The sounds of their kisses persisted, only being drowned out by the movie nobody was paying attention to. The warmth of their bodies sent chills down Yanqing’s spine while his fingers ran up hers. Yunli felt his hands run up and down her torso slowly, stirring up her mind. Occasionally his fingers barely slid underneath her top before retreating. She wasn’t sure if he was trying his luck, or accidentally driving her nuts. He had proven to be good at both.
The constant stimulation she felt unraveled her mind and caused knots to form in her stomach until her body caved to desire, causing Yunli to press her hips down against Yanqing’s and buck just once; causing both of them to grunt for the spike of pleasure. Yunli tried to gain back composure, but her actions spurred the swordsman’s hands to run down her toned legs and take hold of her rear. He encouraged her hips to move again and made Yunli gasp.
“H-Hey! Just where do you think you’re grabbing?” Her defiance was so halfhearted she gave up immediately, her words being pushed aside to accommodate Yanqing’s tongue eagerly evading her mouth as he controlled her hips. Something about the grip he had on her made her body want to sink deeper. His touch was firm, yet not overbearing. He was gentle with her but somehow made it feel impossible to escape his grasp. The two of them had to take a break from kissing if they wanted to live but their bodies remained in motion, constantly shifting and rubbing against one another.
“H-Hey? Yunli?” He rasped in her ear.
“What’s up?”
“Technically speaking, it’s only fair if I took my shorts off, considering what you’re wearing.”
Blood hit her face immediately. “You’re not wrong. Fair is fair.” Yunli began to get up to help remove them, but was quickly hugged, keeping her close to him.
“Can’t have you staring.” He teases, causing her to nip at his neck.
She couldn’t even deny how he caught her red handed. Looks like both of them were trying to maintain a little bit of modesty. His hands left her but she could feel the fabric of his clothes slide down her legs and off the side of the couch. His grasp on her returned alongside a burning heat that made them both blush wildly. Yunli could feel him poking her stomach even beyond the fabric of his boxers.
“Somebody’s happy I’m here.” She giggled nervously, surprised by the outline she was feeling. “Am I crazy or is he a little big?”
Even through fabric, Yanqing could feel a dampness seep into his boxers. “I’m not the only happy one here.”
“D-Don’t talk about it!”
“Why not?” He sat up with her, still holding on tightly. Yanqing leaned against the back of the sofa. The blue muted light from the tv gave a beautiful outline of the girl on top of him while the blankets hid every reckless action below their waists. “I like the feeling~”
The way she wanted to scream was unreal! Yunli grabbed the back of the couch for leverage, his face remaining inches from her own. “You won’t let me save face at all.”
“Yeah but you like it.”
“Hush~” she kissed that snarky mouth of his, refusing to let it cast more spells on her as she rocked her hips against him; her eagerness only elevated by Yanqing’s hands grabbing and guiding her butt freely like before.
The fabric between them gradually became thinner and ruined as her breath began to tremble. The knots in her stomach grew tighter and tighter as her core began to ache against Yanqing. Somehow the lack of seeing his erection only drove her more up a wall. Each buck of her hips treated her to strong throbs and rising heat.
“Nngh! Y-Yunli~”
Oh, she liked the sound of that. “Having fun?” She giggled. “Good. I’m glad.” She said softly in his ear.
Yanqing let her hips move freely, bringing his hands back up Yunli’s toned body while their lips continued their battle for dominance. Even breathing gradually began to feel like a chore as they worked up a sweat. Who knew kissing could be so intense? Quiet smacks accompanied couch creaking each time their lips broke apart and rushed back together.
It was Yunli however who lost the upper hand when Yanqing stole her tongue, keeping it bound with his as he gently sucked on it unexpectedly. “Aaaah! Mmmngh!”
Her movements continued rougher than before. Yunli leaned deeper into their erotic kiss and happily gave into the boy’s attack. By the time he released her, Yunli’s brain was buzzing. The two of them briefly remained connected by a thin line of spit as they stared breathlessly into each other’s eyes, their bodies still moving on their own.
“Y-You’ve gotten a bit better at kissing.” She confessed, her chest rising and falling repeatedly. Yunli felt Yanqing’s hands dance around the edge of her top again. However, this time he dared to slide his fingers further in; this surprised her greatly and probably earned her face a new shade of red. “Umm-”
“I won’t stare.” He said, maintaining eye contact.
“Not like there’s much to look at.” She huffed, letting one of very few insecurities get to her. Before she could shrug it off, Yanqing cut it down.
“I like the way you look. All of you.”
“You’re just jazzed I’m currently kissing you to death.”
“Haha, I thought you’d know me a little better than that. I didn’t want this because you’re beautiful. You’re beautiful because I like you.” He confessed. “I’m a fool for you, Yun-”
She had to kiss him. One more word and she feared her heart would beat right out of her chest. “You have to stop talking like that, or else we’re going to do something that gets us in trouble.” Yunli’s hands trailed up his arms and rested on his hands, guiding them under her top to cup her modest chest. A new wave of ease washed her as her body relaxed, accepting his touch as he kneaded her like dough. “I like you too~” she cooed gently. “Yanqing, I want another kiss.”
He gave it to her without question, stealing her tongue like he did before. Although it was much more accurate to say Yunli gave it to him this time. She didn’t stifle her moans anymore. Her hands held his face softly and messed with his hair again as if he was ever planning on stopping the kiss. His mind was swimming in pleasure just like hers. He wasn’t going anywhere. Yunli took full control again by rocking them over to the left, causing her to fall on top of Yanqing.
“Don’t move.” She ordered, giving him a chaste kiss. “We can afford to be just a little more dumb tonight.”
Yanqing had no idea what she meant at first, until he felt her soft hands fish out his erection from his boxers. “Y-Yunli?!”
“I said we’d be kissing and touching, didn’t I?”
Yanqing was left speechless as a warmth radiating against him, sliding along the shaft and making it slick. He couldn’t hide his pleasure. To think he’d feel this good just from brushing against the outside. “You’re playing with fire.”
“That’s my job.” Yunli laid down, pressing her chest against his and recapturing his lips as she continued rocking her hips in earnest without flimsy underwear impeding their pleasure.
Yanqing must’ve reached his mental limit, because he didn’t hesitate to place his hands back on her butt and add pressure. A jolt shot through her body. No matter how she moved, his length managed to rub against her delicate bundle of nerves just right.
“W-Wait!” She shuddered.
“Yell at me later.”
Yunli was pulled back into their lustful embrace, her body at the whims of Yanqing’s hips grinding underneath her. “Mmph! Ngnn~” the knots were getting tighter, threatening to snap. Her hips couldn’t stop following Yanqing’s lead. Perhaps she had played with fire too much this time? He may have been kind enough to grant her so many moves, but in the end… it would seem he was the one to finish her off.
“YANQING!” She cried out, her orgasm ripping through her body. He kept her right up against his length as she convulsed, squirming from the rush. “AAAH~” All her amazing strength dripped out of her body and her head fell against him.
Yanqing’s eyes widened. He honestly wasn’t expecting it to go that well for him. “You good?” He said in disbelief, flustered by Yunli’s cries. She raised her head enough to stare at him with what looked like ‘I am going to hit you’ eyes. The violence didn’t arrive though.
“You suck.” She put her head back down. “Why’d you have to make that feel so amazing? It’s unfair.” Yunli sighed.
“I’m sorry? Or should I say you’re welcome?”
“I’ll take both.” She huffed. Yunli felt a little dead and brand new at the same time. While she wanted to revel in this interesting limbo, her pride didn’t allow it. Yanqing was still hard, but her body very much wanted a break. The answer was simple but also humbling. “Yanqing, I need you to follow my instructions to the letter. If you don’t, I will be really mad.”
“Okay? What do you need?”
“Look up at your ceiling until I say stop. Not a moment before.”
That was pretty easy. He was already on his back. “Done.” He felt her move off of him. “I think most of your clothes fell over to the- aaah!”
His entire body tensed. Yanqing had thought Yunli wanted to get somewhat decent. Boy was he wrong. His cheeks flared red as soft lips he had just kissed now enveloped his erection. Yunli’s fiery tongue now burned against his shaft and played with his tip.
“Aaaaghn~ fff-Gah!”
“That’s a nice sound.” It actually made Yunli a little less embarrassed. Not by much though. She had never done this before. His scent was now a potent taste that flooded her senses. Was it natural for boys to be this… much? She’s braved scarier meal portions but this was still a mouthful. Yunli took extra care to avoid harming him. She wanted him to yell like she did. With the way he was throbbing, it wouldn’t take long.
“Yunli~” He couldn’t see her, but he reached his hand out, find the top of her head to pat. “Please, don’t stop.”
Another moment he managed to make her heart skip. At this point, she might need a doctor. “Why do you have to be so…so…” her head bobbed a little faster. Yunli sucked gently and gave it her all as Yanqing continued to pat her head. She wasn’t a fan of how many things she was learning about herself. Still, it spurred her on, making Yanqing grow harder and harder until finally-
“AAGH!”
The taste reached its peak as Yunli felt Yanqing cum. The girl removed her head quickly, coughing from the unexpected shot in her mouth while the rest fired out onto her legs and dress. Multiple ropes seemed to find her without fail.
!!!!
“Agh!” She screamed. “Hey! A warning would’ve been nice!” The boy didn’t speak, his high still wrecking him. He didn’t even look at- “Oh yeah. You can stop staring, dummy.”
Yanqing groaned as he sat up. “The daze didn’t last long once he saw Yunli completely soiled. “Oops.”
“This is more than an oops! The heck, why so much?” She whined, looking at her skirt. It really was a good thing they didn’t actually have sex. This was an intimidating sight. “Do you not get off regularly or something?”
“Anything I may or may not do in my private time would hardly compare to what we just did.”
That was oddly flattering. At least she knew she did well. “Fair enough. Also what’s with that phrasing? You have a girl willing to go down on you but you can’t admit you might masturbate occasionally?”
“Do you?”
“None of your concern.” She said bluntly.
Yanqing shook his head and smiled. “Figured that would be your response.”
“Hey! Those are questions you don’t ask ladies, no matter the situation!”
“Even when they look the way you do right now?”
Yunli squinted and was about to clap back against the remark, until reality hit her. She looked down at herself again. Aside from her skirt, she was completely exposed, and Yanqing was looking right at her. It quickly dawned on him too. All that effort using the covers and staying close was basically thrown out the window. He could see almost everything. Yanqing averted his gaze, looking at the tv which had long since rolled credits.
“Yanqing, I’m over it.” His head turned around immediately. Yunli saw his eyes take in her body, making her flustered all over again. “D-Don’t stare too much!”
“S-Sorry!” He looked at her eyes again. “My bad. I still stand by what I said. You’re gorgeous.”
“I thought I said to cut that nonsense out! Besides, no girl wants to hear that while covered in jizz! Ugh, I can’t go home in this.”
Yanqing adjusted his shorts and got up to peek outside. It was well into the night. “Your inn is far and it’s super late. Even if your clothes were good, it’d be a tiring walk.” He turned to her. “Stay here for the night.”
“Wh-What?” She said sheepishly. “Are you sure?”
“Yunli, this is easily the most certain I’ve been in the last few hours. Yes you can spend the night. Even if you don’t want to, you at least need to shower. Any clothes I lend won’t cover up what we’ve been doing if you don’t.”
That was undeniably true. Even if her clothes weren’t ruined, there’s absolutely no way to justify the scent to anyone. Going outside would be a death wish.
Yunli put her hands together. “Thank you for having me.”
“Yeah that should’ve been said before you ate my dinner.” He sighed. This entire day felt backwards, yet natural. “If you head upstairs my room has a bathroom with a shower. I’ll throw our things in the washer now but won’t start the load until tomorrow morning. People around here get grumpy if you run the machines late.”
Yunli nodded. Rose to her feet and headed upstairs. “How much does a lieutenant pay to have your own personal bathroom?”
“Pretty well. Please don’t use all the hot water.”
“I would never!”
Yunli made it upstairs and immediately saw two doors on the left labeled “storage” and immediately remembered this was the house of a fellow sword freak. The single door in the right led into a spacious bedroom with a decent sized bed underneath a closed window. Surprisingly, art hung on the walls and dressers were free of swords. Instead they were photos of scenery and days long gone. One of them had the boy riding on Jing Yuan’s shoulders.
Yunli smiled. “Lil Yanqing was even littler once upon a time.” She made her way to a door on the opposite side of the room and entered a pristine bathroom that almost looked marble. “I should become a lieutenant.”
She locked the door behind her and removed her clothes completely. Well, what was left of them. Yunli looked at herself in the mirror to find her hair a complete mess and the little makeup she wore was smudged. It wasn’t surprising but it was still a shock. She couldn’t believe Yanqing had the nerve to call her beautiful while looking like this. She walked over to the sliding shower door and turned on the water so it could heat up.
“Yunli!” The boy called out from what sounded like the hallway. “I’m grabbing you a towel and washcloth.”
“Thank you!”
“There should be a new toothbrush in one of the drawers.”
“Why the heck do you have a spare toothbrush ready?”
“Why would I take the one at home when I have patrols or training camps?”
Okay, maybe he earned his paychecks. “Fair enough.” There were four drawers under the sink. She opened the first two to find hair care products. Made sense honestly. Since it was a spare, Yunli decided to jump right to the fourth. Unfortunately, that was wrong again, but nonetheless interesting. She pulled out something unexpected that caught her eye. Earlier, Yanqing said he wasn’t prepared, so why was there a box of condoms in his bathroom? They were sealed; not one of them used. From the looks of it they were brand new.
“Looks like somebody had their fingers crossed all along.” Yunli honestly wasn’t sure what to make of this. He probably didn’t tell her so she wouldn’t feel bad or awkward about not being up for sex. She doubted it was for any other reason. Still, Yunli couldn’t say she was the biggest fan of being lied to. A sudden knock on the door startled her into tossing the box back where she found it.
“Find the toothbrush?”
“Y-Yeah!” She quickly opened drawer number three. “I found it.”
“Cool. Your towel, washcloth, and clothes are outside the door so-” the bathroom door creaked open and Yanqing was met with the girl's face inches away again. “Wow. Everything okay?”
“Yeah. I just…you’re planning on showering too, right?”
“Of course. You’re not the only one who worked up a sweat. No way I could sleep like this.”
“If that’s the case, why not shower with me?” Yunli muttered, averting his gaze briefly before seeing his eyes become the size of dinner plates. “What? It’ll be faster.”
“I know that but-”
“Yanqing, I want to shower with you.” Her tone was direct and in one breath. She wasn’t completely sure what got into her, but seeing the box made her want to spend more time with him in this crazy situation. “Just to be clear, I do mean shower. Maybe a little more kissing if it feels right.”
He really didn’t know what to say. Fortunately he didn’t have to. Yunli took his hand and his feet did the rest. Yunli hopped into the shower while he got rid of clothes immediately.
“What made you comfortable with me seeing, well, everything?” He asked.
“It feels a little ridiculous to fret about it at this point. I kinda saw your junk.”
That tidbit escaped him until now. “That did happen, didn’t it?” His face got hot.
“Yep, now get in here and don’t make it weird.”
“Says the one in my shower.” Yanqing slid the door open and stepped in behind her before closing it.
“Pretty interesting that you chose to stand behind me, I dare say.”
“Y-You are shorter than me! I’d block the water otherwise.”
“A decent excuse.” She handed him the soap over her shoulder. “Here you go.”
Yanqing took it despite the girl’s teasing. Looks like she was back to her normal self, but to what degree? He lathered up the soap in his washcloth before gently rubbing her back. Her ears immediately went red.
“I can wash my own back!”
“It’s easier this way. You can even wash mine.” He continued scrubbing delicately, watching the suds and water run down her body. He wasn’t sure if this was good for his health or worse. Either way, he wasn’t forgetting this sight anytime soon.
“You better not be staring again.”
“If I don’t then my hands might drift. Then you’d really have something to be mad about.”
“I wouldn’t say it would make me mad.”
Yunli grew used to Yanqing’s touch. Just like on the couch, he was gentle with her body. His arm reached over her and grabbed a bottle on the shelf. “What’s that?”
“A piece of heaven. Hold still.” He squeezed a gel into his hands that smelled like mint. He ran them through Yunli’s hair and scalp, causing the girl to exhale.
The minty scent opened her nose and her scalp began to tingle like pop rocks as his fingers worked magic. “Yeah, yeah heaven was the right word~”
“Hehe, told ya.” Yunli became like a cat that adored scratches, her temperament completely obliterated. “Turn around for me.”
She did so without question, staring at his face again. He tilted her head back slightly while holding her waist with his arm, allowing the shower to rinse out the shampoo while they stared at each other in silence. It was so crazy to Yunli. One moment being around him stressed her out, and the next moment felt like bliss.
“I wouldn’t hate it if you called me beautiful right now.” She uttered.
Yanqing smiled at her, pulling her out of the water and close to him. “Yunli, I think you’re beautiful.”
She stood on her toes and kissed him softly before going back down. “My turn. I want to wash your hair.”
“My hair is a chore.”
“Then it’s a good thing there’s two of us.”
Simple but effective logic. Yanqing had no choice but to concede. He carefully switched places with Yunli and started focusing on the front of his hair while she lathered the back. The entire time he could hear her humming in satisfaction.
“You really like my hair, don’t you?”
“Full transparency? I’m a little envious. My hair can be healthy, or long. Never both. Even if diligent, it’s only a matter of time before I accidentally burn a section in the forge.”
“Yeah that does sound annoying. Still, I wouldn’t mind giving you a list of a few products that help me.”
“I might have to take you up on that offer.” She grinned. Yunli helped gather his hair to bring under the water. “Probably too late to ask, but will this dry fast for you?”
“Heh, you’re right. It is late to ask that. I have a trick; it’s no problem at a-ah!” He yelled, feeling her hands unexpectedly lather his back with soap.
“Payback, bitch.” She laughed like a gremlin. That immediately stopped though as soon as Yaning raised a hand that radiated cold. “Let’s be reasonable. No need for hasty choices.”

After a nice shower and careful negotiating, both of them left the bathroom feeling relaxed. Yanqing wore a plain white shirt alongside black baggy shorts for bed.
Yanli walked out in a big dark blue shirt given to her that stopped above her knees, and while Yanqing also prepared shorts for her, Yunli opted to only wear his gray boxers. The tired girl finished drying the last section of her hair with a towel. Yanqing however, had a unique method. After removing some excess water, he combed his fingers through his hair to freeze and shake off water to make it less damp.
Yunli found it interesting and unsettling. “How do you not get sick or at least a brain freeze?”
“Same way you can walk barefoot under any circumstance. Tolerance is a powerful thing.”
“Yeah, I mean I tolerate you after all.”
Yanqing playfully rolled his eyes at her dumb grin. “Oh ha ha, very funny. Go to bed already.”
Yanqing took one of the pillows off the bed and grabbed a spare blanket to toss on the floor before laying down; an act that Yunli found utterly bizarre.
“Umm, Yanqing? What are you doing?”
“What’s it look like? Giving you the bed. It’s fine. Carpet is soft enough.” He shut his eyes to finally rest, until he suddenly found his body floating off the ground. His eyelids opened wide to see Yunli casually lifting him up before tossing him onto the bed.
Yunli groaned at his odd chivalrous nature. “Honestly, I can’t tell if you’re clever or dull.” She cut off the light. Thankfully it helped hide her embarrassment. “We are sharing the bed.”
“Well, I suppose it is more than big enough for two people.” The justification was more for himself than anything else.
“Even if it wasn’t, I still wouldn’t let you get on the floor. You handled kissing me; sleeping should be a cake walk. Don’t tell me you find the idea a little tempting?” His silence spoke a thousand words, each one burning her cheeks. “Brute.”
“I don’t wanna hear that from you!” Yanqing laid down on his side and shut his eyes. “Goodnight. Try not to kick or push in your sleep. I do actually want a healed arm.”
“So you say.” After today’s antics, Yunli wasn’t convinced; questioning him about it served no point. Yunli faced away from Yanqing as she crawled into bed. She shut her eyes and tried to get some much needed rest.
It did not go well. Time went by slowly. After half, or maybe even a full hour, Yunli still found her mind restless and kept her awake. She wasn’t the only one either. Not once was there a snore from the other side of the bed. Only unnatural silence. Yanqing was definitely awake.
“Yanqing?”
“Yeah?” He said immediately.
Yunli was a little surprised he didn’t feign sleep. Well, here goes nothing. “What do you like about me exactly?”
“So even the great Yunli feels insecure occasionally.”
“Tsk, just answer the question. Is it simply because I gave you attention? You claim it’s not looks but our meeting was far from cordial.”
Yanqing remained silent for a moment to gather his thoughts. “It’s a little difficult to explain. Being around you just makes sense.”
“It makes sense? The hell does that mean?”
“I’ve told you before that I never envied other people my age and how they grew up. Same goes for my feelings about my fellow Cloud Knights. However, I have always felt like there’s a certain distance between myself and other people. Doesn’t matter if I’m trying to prove something or act normal to them, it feels off. With you though, I feel…like myself.”
His voice wavered as he attempted to be more vulnerable and honest with himself. “Talking to you feels natural. So does fighting, and everything else for that matter. Even the awkward moments. They all feel comfortable with you, Yunli.”
“Then why’d you lie to me?” She said, her tone sharp. Yunli balled herself up tightly. “I saw them, the condoms.”
Yanqing went quiet again. “Oh, those.” He uttered.
“All that talk about feeling comfortable and normal but you looked pretty okay lying to my face. To make it worse, I don’t even know why it pissed me off.” Her face felt hot, but this time it was unpleasant. Warm tears stung her eyes as she tried to keep her calm. “I know I set the boundaries but- I don’t know. Fuck, this day has been so confusing and annoying that it doesn’t make sense!”
“S-Sorry I lied. I didn’t mean to make you feel this way. I’ll admit, originally the idea of potentially sleeping with you tonight was fresh on my mind, so I prepared for the possibility when I got ingredients. A part of me was looking forward to it.”
“Clearly.” She clicked her tongue. “So much for honesty.”
“Yunli, I am being honest with you. I only lied about not having them, but I meant it when I told you it was fine that we didn’t go that far.”
“Then what happened to looking forward to it, huh? You just changed your mind?”
“Yes!”
“Why!?” Her body tensed up, her worst thoughts gnawing at her.
“Because you wanted me.” His voice cracked, his nerves getting the better of him.
Yunli’s own thoughts began to fade. She turned over to see the boy still facing away from her as his body trembled slightly. “W-What?” She said softly.
“At first, maybe I had it in my head that if we didn’t have sex, then I wouldn’t know if you actually saw value in me. But then you kept kissing me, holding me, showing all these little ways that said you didn’t want to be anywhere else. I felt like you chose to see me. I’ve never felt that way before, so when you looked at me earnestly, I realized I really didn’t care if we had sex or didn’t. I just wanted to stay in your arms. I never expected you to like me the way I like you; to want me so intensely. Who could ask for more? I couldn’t.”
There, he said it all. Yanqing confessed his deepest feelings and it felt scarier than stepping on any battlefield. Yunli said absolutely nothing and it drove him up a wall as heart pounded. Before tears could break him down, he felt her hand raise his arm. Slowly, his body was turned until he laid flat on his back while Yunli put his arm around her. The girl put an arm around his waist as she gently rested her head against his chest. Her hold was careful, yet so firm.
Yunli closed her eyes and listened as Yanqing’s heart began to calm. All this time she fretted over her own thoughts tonight, forgetting it was just as big of a deal to him. He was just as anxious and excited from the very beginning.
“Me too.” She snuggled closer. “I feel normal when I’m with you too, so keep holding me. Just like how I want to hold you.”
Words failed Yanqing, but a new warmth spread throughout his body. Carefully, he held Yunli close to him and felt his eyelids get heavy. Suddenly, getting rest didn’t feel so difficult.
xxxxxxx
Tomorrow came a bit early. Maybe it was the new bed, her exhaustion, or the weight off her shoulders, but Yunli woke up pretty early before sunlight could greet the room. Her eyes opened gradually as she sat up to rub them. As she did, the boy beside her began to stir awake too until he also sat up and leaned against her.
The subtle scent of his shampoo was nice first thing in the morning. “Sorry. Didn’t mean to wake you.”
“It’s fine. No stranger to early mornings.”
His raspy morning voice caught her off guard. Yanqing lightly held her waist and stayed close.
“What time is it?” He asked, his lips inches from her ear.
“Umm, I-I can check.” Yunli moved quickly to find her phone.
Even in his daze, Yanqing found himself looking at Yunli’s legs as she crawled over to the nightstand. Slowly but surely, his mind began recalling memories that woke him up and made his face pinkish. He finally remembered enough to avoid staring, despite doing so for a while.
Yunli found her phone and returned to sitting beside him. “It’s not even seven yet. Ugh, we really beat the early birds.”
“Yeah. Can’t start your clothes yet either. Let’s wait a little longer.”
“All right.” She put her phone down and noticed his bashfulness. “You alright?” Her question was answered with him putting his head on her shoulder in frustration. “What’s gotten into you?”
“Yunli, since we have time. Can we…” he stopped his words and hugged her instead, embarrassed by his actions.
It didn’t take long to figure out his thoughts, or feel them for that matter. “First thing in the morning?!” She blushed wildly. “Are all guys this boarish?! You really are a brute!”
“Hey, it happens sometimes. It’s normal!” He defended, knowing it was a ridiculous argument to make. “Seeing you like this was a bit more than I expected. Sorry.”
He was back with the embarrassing honesty again, although Yunli couldn’t deny she rather liked it. “You’re so hopeless.” She moved his head to get a good look at him, instinctively leaning in for a soft good morning kiss.
It ended tenderly and felt so easy to do. Both swordsmen looked at each other in comfortable silence before kissing again with a little more feeling. Alone in a quiet room hidden before dawn broke, Yunli found a calmness in herself she had never experienced thanks to a person she least expected. In this place, they were safe to be themselves. Their kiss ended again but now her own face was pink, her thoughts a little boarish. In fact, they were bolder than ever and she was okay with that. Didn’t change how she showed it however. Yunli pressed her face gently against his chest in slight frustration.
“Yunli? Are you okay?”
“Yanqing?” She muttered.
“Yeah?” He looked down at her. She tilted her head up, showing him a resolve burning clearly and silently in her eyes.
Her voice was even and sure of herself. “Go get them; the condoms.” Yunli didn’t stop looking at him, and Yanqing looked right back at her with the same gaze.
“….Okay.”
Notes:
I feel like a struck a good balance between narrative and smut. Didn’t really see a reason to go full throttle in these dorks case. One more chapter to go!
Do not expect smut in it. However, I could be persuaded to do a chapter 4.5 if the demand is high enough.
Chapter 5: First time
Notes:
This is the 4.5 chapter technically. I am a person of my word. Here you go. For those uninterested, you really can skip this chapter and be fine.

Chapter Text
“…Okay”
A calm response with both budding resolve and slight anxiousness. Yunli watched the boy get up and leave for the bathroom per her request. Even so, she found her own nerves flaring a bit.
“Keep it together. Yes it’s a big deal, but don’t make it a big deal.” She told herself repeatedly. Yunli kept her breathing steady; it wasn’t long before Yanqing returned holding the small box. Not only that, but in his right hand was a small bottle she hadn’t noticed last night. Considering the situation, it was probably lube.
Yanqing was scanning over the contents of both items again briefly before putting his attention back on Yunli, who for some reason was squinting at him. “What?”
“Yanqing, you’re the kind of person who reads up on sex and girls beforehand, aren’t you?” The immediate redness flooding to his face told her all she needed to know.
“A-And what if I am!?” He said defensively. “Why make avoidable mistakes?”
“Calm down. I was just teasing.” She smiled softly. He was rather cute when he got like this. “Truthfully, I’m relieved. Makes sense for at least one of us to have a plan. I’ll…follow your lead then.” Yunli ran her fingers down her hair repeatedly. Maybe she was more anxious than she thought?
She watched Yanqing put both items on the nightstand near his side of the bed before crawling next to her back onto the mattress. His lips found hers again, capturing them fondly as he laid her down. Yunli draped her arms around his neck to keep him from escaping. Once again, his kissing seemed to improve. Yunli felt the tingle each brush against them. Her own body welcomed the warmth of his hand running up between her legs, while also trembling from the sensation.
“What are you doing?” She muttered, knowing full well his intent.
“Getting you ready.” His middle finger slipped past soft fabric and ran along a warm, almost burning core that only got hotter when he pressed inside. Yanqing could feel her entire body tense up as he began pushing deeper in and carefully pulling out again and again. Yunli shut her eyes and held him tighter. “You okay?”
“Mhm. Just focusing.” She sighed, carefully trying to control her expressions and voice. Yunli felt her hips raise up to seek greater pleasure. His slow but precise rhythm was somehow more satisfying than a quick pace. She did her best to keep her body still but her knees buckled any time she felt the slender digit curl in and press up against her. Moans slipped through clenched teeth despite her wishes. “Ngh~”
Yanqing couldn’t fathom why she was holding back aside from her own ego. They’ve come this far and she still puts on a facade. Fine. He’ll just have to try a little harder is all. The point of this was to get her ready after all.
“Just keep breathing. Remain calm and-”
Her thoughts came to a grinding halt. Suddenly, teeth gently sunk into the crook of her neck; jolts of pleasure chipped away at her concentration as Yanqing began to lick, and suck on the claimed flesh. He didn’t stop there either. Yunli felt his finger drag its way out towards her entrance again before plunging back in with additional help from his ring finger.
“Gah~” she gasped, unprepared for the attack. It was this opening that allowed Yanqing to quickly claim her mouth again with a deep kiss that ran down her spine. What she hated most was how her arms immediately pulled him down, making their kiss far more aggressive. How annoying; he was playing with her tongue again, and she couldn’t help but give it to him. Even her legs spread a bit wider to give Yanqing more space to make her crumble. The dimly lit room was filled with the smacks of their own lips and the rising desire Yanqing churned out of her.
Yanqing pulled back to give Yunli a chance to breathe. “You’re really something else.” He said in awe, looking at her panting face despite her eyes still being closed. “Are you close?”
“Don’t get cocky.” Yunli huffed, her hips still moving to his fingers. “This feels nice is all.”
“In that case…”
Yunli could feel him moving around again. “Damn it. What’s he doing now?” She dared to open one eye to peek. Thank goodness she did. Both eyes shot open as she saw Yanqing’s head dip under the covers. Yunli’s face turned every shade of red before flinging the covers off and catching the man’s head with her thighs. “We can skip that!”
Yanqing quickly tapped the side of one leg before Yunli could pop his head like a watermelon. Thankfully she realized she’d forgotten her own strength and freed him. “Oh god I thought I was gonna die!”
“S-Sorry. Wait, why am I apologizing!? Why are you down there!?”
“Do you know a better way to do oral?” He groaned, the pressure in his head slowly returning to normal. “You did it to me last night. What’s the problem?”
“That was you, and not me! Not everything has to be tit for tat.”
“It’s not.”
“Not what?”
“Tit for tat.” He blushed. “Have you considered I’m down here because…I want to do it for my benefit too?”
Yunli’s ears were burning! What does he mean he wants to eat her out for his own sake?! “Tha-That’s cheating. You really are boarish.”
“What!? I’m curious! It’s not like there’s much light in the room. Not that it matters. In case you forgot, we showered together.”
Damn him and sound logic! Not only that but his eyes were earnest the entire time. Yunli couldn’t think of a retort. She watched his head slowly lower itself again, waiting for rejection. Yunli however, could only summon the strength to sigh as she laid back down with an arm over her eyes.
“You better not stare too much.” A weak threat that felt even tamer as he raised her hips and took off the boxers she borrowed. Thank goodness it was dark in the room. She might’ve died on the spot otherwise.
Yanqing couldn’t help but take notice of wisps of blue hair above pinkish lips and sensitive nub. His eyes glanced at her left inner thigh. “Pfft, were you nervous about your birthmark?”
“I told you not to st- aah~” rage was silenced with a single tongue lash that ran up to her clit. Yunli felt the imposing muscle slide back down and press into her entrance like his fingers did before. “Y…You fucking suck. I hope you know that.” She whined. Him taking the lead turned out to be disastrous for her image.
Yanqing was too busy thinking about other things. He could feel every fold threaten to take his tongue while her thighs held his life at risk. Any movement he did led to them trembling as he tried to write a variety of symbols. He went through his name with mixed results. Might as well try hers. “ Y. U-”
“Anngh, nooo~”she covered her mouth immediately.
“Yep. Sticking with U.” Yanqing gripped her thighs for safety and began pulling out moans from her throat. Her walls quivered much more frequently and he found himself able to push his tongue deeper into her desire. His own mind began to be affected by her pleasure. “Why does she taste so good?”
Yunli’s chest rose and fell again and again as Yanqing’s efforts bore fruit. It took all her strength to stay quiet but her calm was visibly broken the moment a bead of sweat ran down her face. The sounds her body made as he lapped her up like a dog made her stomach knots unravel slowly. Yunli tried adjusting her body, propping herself up to breathe. Her gaze fell between her legs to spot flushed cheeks and golden eyes watching her more like a cat watches its prey. Her heart fluttered instantly; spooking the girl into running her left hand through Yanqing’s hair and gently pushing him down.
“Not everything needs eye contact.” He didn’t resist at all and continued moving his tongue. Thank goodness. Yunli had a brief moment of victory. She bent her knees more and used both her hands to play with his hair as Yanqing became more ravenous. “H-Hey? I think I’m wet enough.” Her words prompted his hands to run up her body and under shirt. Yunli felt each finger outline her body like a sculpture, forming every grove as they went up to knead her chest like dough. It was clear Yanqing wasn’t going to stop.
Yunli’s whimpers grew more pronounced while her hips pressed against the boy’s face, his nose grazing her clit to make the situation worse. “Yanqing, please. Wait~ I..I’m…” there was no escape. His tongue traced her walls on final time before dragging its way out and onto her clit for him to wrap his lips around. Yunli’s vision blurred.
“AAAAHHHGH!”
There, a true and honest scream; one that rattled her body and dirtied the boy’s face. Yunli’s hips fell against the mattress like a weight. That felt more intense than last night. Her eyes finally flickered open. She expected to see Yanqing wearing a smug grin or prideful smile but no. He was rightfully catching his breath too, as well as gazing at her longingly. He said nothing as he took off his shirt, wiping his face in the process and tossing it aside. Yunli almost gasped seeing him remove his boxers as well. His earlier words were true. Going down on her had brought him to a full blown erection that was more than a little intimidating.
“What are the odds you give me time to recover?”
Yanqing chuckled, “Isn’t that what we’re doing now?” Then proceeded to reach for the condoms and lube.
This was starting to feel like a master plan to kill her. Then again, she was the one who told me to get the condoms. “Maybe studying up for this yesterday was the winning play?” She lamented. She’d probably feel more confident than him if she did.
“You ready?”
“Y-Yea!” Man he works quickly. It was already on him. “Are you secretly some kind of deviant who does this often? That was way too natural.”
“Yunli, it’s a condom. Not a jade abacus. Maybe someone should study up next time?” He teased, getting back between her legs.
Yunli wrapped her arms over his shoulders again. “Pft, I’m an intuitive learner. Also it’s pretty bold of you to say next time.”
“Y-You know what I meant! Although, I wouldn’t hate this moment happening again.” He looked into her eyes, watching her avert his gaze.
“There you go saying dumb stuff again. I swear I give you an inch and you run a marathon.”
It was astounding how easily she flustered. I guess anyone would in this situation. Yanqing spoke softly. “So, is kissing off the table now?”
Yunli looked at him dead on, his eyes gentle and his body so close she could feel his heat. In a moment she’d be feeling much more. “Looks like your studying left you helpless in this situation. C’mere, you dork.”
Yunli happily kissed him, not caring at all where his lips had been moments ago. The idiot seemed to forget he didn’t think much of kissing her last night despite going down on him. He seriously gets caught up on the weirdest things. Not that she had much room to judge. It was also refreshing. He was more nervous than she realized at first. Her body ached for his touch once again the moment his length pressed against her. Yunli slid her left hand down his body, taking hold of it to help guide him. She gave him one more look.
“Yanqing?”
“Yeah?”
“Gently, okay?” Her heart was pounding, but a kiss on her forehead eased her worries.
“I promise.”
Slowly, his hips finally pushed forward. A gradual sense of fullness began to wash over Yunli that felt rather uncomfortable and strange. It wasn’t a sharp pain or even dull; more so like a cramp in a muscle she’s never worked out before. The tension made breathing a little more difficult and her limbs clung aggressively to the one causing this new feeling.
“Ngh! This feels weird.”
“Want me to stop?”
“That might honestly be worse.” She gasped. “Get all the way at least.”
Yanqing proceeded cautiously. Yunli’s eyes were closed again and was panting endlessly. Meanwhile the tightness enveloping him was not only crushing, but immensely hot. Yanqing kissed her forehead again in an attempt to relax her body even a little bit to make proceeding more tolerable for both of them. Eventually, his hips pressed against hers completely.
“I’m in.” He grunted, not used to this pressure.
“Yeah no kidding!” Yunli could feel him poking her from the inside. “This might be the one and only time you get to say you stabbed me.”
“You must be feeling pretty good if you’re throwing jabs now.” He watched her eyes open with slight fear. “Relax, I’m not gonna move. Does it hurt?”
“Not really? I’ve felt worse than this plenty of times. Kinda feels like when there’s air stuck in your gut, but more weird.” Yunli placed her face in the crook of Yanqing’s neck. “Give me another minute.”
“Take your time.”
She knew that she said to be gentle, but having his tone be soft as well only made her core feel weirder. Even as she reigned in her breathing, her body convulsed whenever Yanqing so much as twitched. Yunli eventually worked up the nerve to move her hips side to side, prompting Yanqing to begin pulling out just a little. The weight of is cock dragging itself against her walls stole air from her lungs in a single gasp. Yanqing stopped.
“Are you-”
“Keep going.” She said in a single breath. “Exactly like that.” She felt more of him leave alongside fading pressure until the tip was all that remained. His hips pushed forward again. However, this time the tension felt welcomed. “Aaah~”
Yunli held onto Yanqing even tighter now. He once again bottomed her out before immediately starting the process again. Much like many cramps, the solution was to work it out steadily, and that’s exactly what was happening. The awkward feeling slowly dulled as deliberate strokes massaged her to the point of constantly leaving her breathless in his ear. Her walls clung to him, begging him to remain inside each time his hips threatened to leave. Yanqing could only try to focus on his own breathing in order to maintain his composure. It wasn’t long before the reason for their pace changed from safety, into pleasure.
Yunli bit her bottom lip, her mind grappling with how she had Yanqing on top of her. Each thrust slid in so easily and brought waves of pleasure that concerned her. Still… “You can go a bit faster if you want.” She whispered. There was no need to repeat herself; Yanqing pulled out and pushed back inside in half the time. “F-aghn~”
“Like that~”
“Yeeesss.” Yunli cooed, receiving exactly what she asked for. Each thrust echoed an obscene noise that complimented the bed rocking. Yanqing was no longer afraid to bury himself to the hilt with each stroke.
“You’re so wet.”
“Shut up.”
“I could stay in you forever~”
“I said shut up already!” Yunli pleaded, feeling her body respond to every word he spoke in her ear. “Don’t be mean right now!”
“I’m beginning to think that’s exactly what you want.”
He bit her earlobe gently and kept the rhythm that was rapidly bringing her closer to tumbling off the edge. Two well trained and fought swordsmen were reduced to being as breathless as new recruits. Yunli tried her damndest but couldn’t take it anymore. Her nails dug into his back, threatening to break through the skin as another rush of pleasure, more dangerous than the last, wracked her body. Every last muscle in her squeezed Yanqing fiercely enough to make his body submit to his own pleasure that quickly filled the condom.
Both of them couldn’t dream of moving, let alone speaking; their bodies basking in the euphoric release of pent up feelings, desires, and tension. It only took Yanqing a couple minutes before he decided to raise his body up, allowing him to slowly leave the girl’s body as she laid flushed and breathless.
A slight pleasurable chill tickled her spine as she felt Yanqing pull out. Half lidded eyes watched him take slow, measured breaths that moved strands of his long blonde hair that were all out of place from their actions. Yunli was beginning to fear that perhaps she’s been spending too much time around March and her nonsensical commentary on attractive aesthetics, because right now she couldn’t help but admit to herself Yanqing looked pretty cute like this.
“If she ever finds out anything about this, I might actually die a little.” Yunli lamented silently. The horrific scenario was thankfully cut short once their eyes met again.
“Are…we done?” Yanqing asked.
There was a hint of disappointment in his voice. Yunli quickly discovered why the second she looked down. Along with a full condom that brought an intense blush to her cheeks was a still very much erect dick. The way this intimidated her more than Hoolay ever did was insane.
“Why the heck is it still hard!?” She said in a loud whisper, as if there were risks if it heard her. “I get your training is all about speed and speed leads to stamina but seriously!?”
Yanqing was too flustered to say anything as he silently removed the rubber and tied it off. “Look, I-I don’t know! You get me riled up. How could I not want more of you?” He mumbled that last part but she definitely heard him.
“Like I said, boarish and a brute.” Yunli swiped her hair away from her face. “But I suppose I should take a little responsibility for that.” She could probably call it here and be alright, yet at the same time it was impossible to deny she also still felt a bit wound up. “Not like we have anywhere else to be, soooo.”
She watched his face perk up before he immediately went to grab another condom. If he had a tail it’d probably be wagging. Then again it was probably better that he didn’t. Yunli was having a hard enough time trying to keep her cool. A foxian tail and ears would probably allow Yanqing to get away with a dreadful amount with her.
Yanqing placed the condom around himself and even added more lube for good measure. “Yunli, can you turn around please?”
Scratch that. Yanqing was getting away with a lot. His yearnful and steady voice turned his request into a gentle command she had no reason to ignore aside from her heartbeat going wild. Still, she turned, guided by his arms until she was comfortable on her stomach. Well, as comfortable as one could be while someone grabs their hips. Yunli hugged a pillow tightly as she felt his hand move to her butt, spreading her open to line himself up.
“He can see everything…” Her thoughts kept her ears red. Even as she felt him press into her entrance again. Yunli’s hips raised on their own and brought whimpers as Yanqing pried her walls open. She thought she had gotten used to his size, but somehow he felt far bigger in this position.
“Uugh~” the feeling of rigid flesh exposing her returned as she felt his dick bury itself even deeper. Yanqing put his weight on her, driving his hips forward. “Uuuuuunnngh~ what happened to gentle!?”
Yunli got no answer, just a hand that guided her face over her right shoulder so he could claim her tongue again as he slowly fucked her into the mattress. At least he was kind enough to return it as quickly as he stole it. Yunli’s head fell into the pillow under her and let out grunt after grunt; moans followed by whimpers. She caught a glimpse of his hands lay on top of hers, his fingers sliding between her own as they both gripped the sheets.
The veins in arms became more distinct as his arms flexed with their might. “He’s…so serious.” Yunli tilted her head to the left, exposing her neck to the side where his grunts were the loudest. It didn’t take long at all for his teeth to return to the exact spot he stole before and give her renewed bliss. “F-aaah! Yanqing~”
He was barely thinking. Yanqing had tried to keep his composure but after the first round, he couldn’t take it anymore. His hips pumped into sopping wetness without restraint, drowning in the pleasure Yunli gave him. What started off gentle became nothing short of lustful as they acted like animals in heat. Maybe he was a bit of a brute? Not that she seemed to mind considering how she kept her hips raised against his pelvis as he kept thrusting so vigorously he was almost panting like a dog.
“It’s like you’re sucking me in~” he went even harder to the point the room filled with the sound of their flesh meeting. “Yunli!”
The girl was in no state to respond. Her teeth were around a pillow in bliss as Yanqing churned everything thoroughly; knots were forming and snapping quickly each time his cock twitched. The way her name grazed her ear alongside rugged breath and powerful grunts had her mind and body lost in the moment with him as she took his pent up desires and pounded hers out until they were running down her thighs. If she had to call the first round anything, it was passion and trust. However, there was only one way to describe this moment and it drove her mad in the best way possible. No matter how Yunli sliced it, they were fucking each other.
Her wits dulled and her senses spiked as another tipping point grew. “Shit.” Yunli shut her eyes tightly. “I’m gonna scream again!” Try as she might, there was no escaping the end; no way to ignore the pulsing inside of her that drove her to want to cum with Yanqing.
After a few more minutes that felt like an entire lifetime, Yanqing’s body began to give in, unable to resist the convulsions that gripped him. “Yunli, I…I…!!!” His voice strained. The girl pushed her hip back into him, arching her back just enough for him to slide deep down before getting squeezed down to the base of his shaft. All Yanqing could do was give a final thrust, pressing himself right up against Yunli’s deepest spot as they both submitted to pleasure.
“AAAAAAAGGGGHHH!!!!!!!!” They both cried out, their screams cutting through the muffling of pillows like they weren’t there at all.
Yunli could feel her body try to drain Yanqing of everything as he filled the condom. “Aaagnnh, nnnghh~” Her fingers continued clawing at the sheets while their hips swayed together to prolong their orgasm. A pure heat radiated inside her as the source of it continued to swell into latex that made dangerous thoughts play wonderful tricks on her body, causing her to spasm.
Yanqing eventually slowed his thrusts into a complete stop, his needs turning into utter exhaustion like the girl’s underneath him. Both made no effort to move an inch for several minutes. All they could do was breathe; something they had been practically neglecting since they started. Yanqing eventually found it in himself to move, prying away from Yunli and pulling out slowly enough to give both of them chills. The condom weighed heavily as he tried to tie it off. Maybe it was his lack of energy or perhaps because it was fuller than the first one, but he had a little difficulty with it. Eventually he found success, placing it aside with the first one on the nightstand. Before he could let his body fall back onto his beautiful mattress, a tug on his hair pulled him down to it and right into direct eye contact with Yunli.
Yanqing groaned, “Owww, whhhhy? That kinda hurt.” He whined, despite how she really didn’t pull that hard at all.
“Consider it half of your punishment. What happened to being gentle? I thought you were going to kill me.”
“You wouldn’t die that easily. Feixiao kneed you in the stomach and you walked it off.”
“Feixiao’s knee wasn’t inside me trying to get to my stomach!” Yunli blushed, feeling her legs tremble out of her control. “I don’t think I can walk this off.”
Yunli the warmth of his hand on her face. Without hesitation, they both leaned into a long, willful kiss. Yanqing wasn’t nearly as aggressive this time. Still, Yunli found herself slowly opening her mouth wider, inviting his tongue in as their limbs became tangled. The way his hands ran up the side of her leg then dipped to hold her lower back made Yunli melt. She deepened the slow and meticulous kiss, giving him more time to trail up her spine and pull her into a full embrace. Their kiss ended and Yanqing pressed his forehead against hers.
“Sorry. I…really lost my cool ehehe. You okay? Does it hurt?”
She only meant to tease him a bit but the gentle concern in his voice was nice to hear. “I’ll be alright.” Yunli smiled faintly. “I’m more concerned about the growing realization that I might be more than a little touch starved.”
“Heh, join the club.”
As the afterglow they shared faded, the raw emotions and acts of lust dissolved into awkwardness and butterflies as they mentally replayed what they had done. Yanqing’s eyes were no longer looking at her with lust, but with the same softness as last night that threatened to unravel her heart.
“Don’t.” Yunli uttered softly. “Don’t look at me like that.”
“Like what?” He held her firmly, not blinking once as stared into eyes bursting with the same joy, fear, and wants as his own.
“Like you’re glad we met. Like you don’t want to let me go. That look.”
“Yunli?”
“Yes?”
“No.”
Her heart skipped another beat. Slowly, Yunli stole their gentlest kiss. His embrace grew a little stronger, causing her breath to hitch. Yunli wrapped her arms around him too and hid her face from view. Almost like a cat curling up in their favorite nook.
“I’m going back to sleep. The second half of your punishment is to not move. When I open my eyes again, you’ll be right here.” Her voice trembled, the final words getting choked up in her throat. “With me.”
Yanqing let his body sink into hers, the both of them becoming one in a different sense. Yunli hadn’t told him everything about her past, but he knew how much it meant to her that nothing important suddenly vanished like a dream. Both of them have had enough of that terrible feeling.
Yanqing closed his eyes. “I’ll be right here.”
Yunli shut her eyes before they could water, allowing herself this moment of peace. “Thank you, for everything.”

Tried to keep things a little silly and real while keeping the tension. Hope I found a decent balance.
Also thank you ao3 for not forcing me to reformat my entire chapter this time.

Chapter Text
“I’m baaack.” Yunli bellowed as she returned to the inn. Her grandpa was chopping fruit. Looks like he was getting his breakfast started.
“How was night life?” He asked, focusing on his apple slices.
“It was alright.” She said in passing.
“Is that so? Want any breakfast?”
“No thanks. I’m gonna go to my room. Rest for a bet.”
Huaiyan turned his gaze towards the girl as she slowly took her time with the stairs. Even from where he was, he could see how red her ears were. “Yunli?” He said calmly, watching the girl freeze for a second before turning around.
“Yes, grandpa?” Yunli blinked twice. She was typically cool under pressure but she wasn’t sure what kind of face she was making.
The wise general could see the slight flush in her cheeks and the way her eyes needed a break from direct contact before engaging and. A novice could put together what she’s most likely been up to. While there were a million things he could say to her, Huaiyan chose to smile and say what mattered in the moment.
“Love, it looks good on you.”
His words took her by surprise and caused the corner of her lips to turn up despite how much she fought it. Yunli bowed in gratitude before continuing to her room.
“Hehe, oh to be young.” Huaiyan continued to make his breakfast.
Upstairs, Yunli plopped face down onto her bed. The scent of fresh linens was refreshing yet not as calming to her. It felt almost odd that they didn’t smell like him. Her blush deepened. She missed those sheets. Right now they were being washed, erasing any evidence of her interest in him. With any luck, that includes the unavoidable bloodstain too.
“I should’ve told him to burn the sheets. I would’ve bought him new ones.” Yunli wrestled with the idea of Yanqing still sleeping with those sheets. On one hand, that’s perfectly normal. On the other, that’s now a permanent reminder! He’d probably go to sleep reminded of her. Actually…that didn’t sound terrible.
“Uuugh!” Yunli groaned into her pillow. “Stop thinking useless things!” A seemingly impossible task considering her hips were sore. The moment they were both in perfect condition, Yunli was going to make him pay! After the War Dance of course. Most of her interest in it had faded after everything that’s happened. Even so, Yunli was aware that unlike her, Yanqing had to enter and was very much looking forward to it.
“That idiot.” She mumbled, finally shutting her eyes. “He better not lose.”
xxxxxxxx
Two days went by, and the War Dance began in no time at all. Well, for some anyway. Many visitors thought the wait took forever, while people like her and fellow knights still had Hoolay fresh in their minds. As she walked through the crowds to find a seat, she had to admit it felt weird to be here as a spectator. If another attack happened right now, she wouldn’t be surprised at all.
“MISS YUNLI!” A familiar voice cried out.
She turned to her right to see her darling disciple, March, waving frantically.
“Over here! I have a seat for you!”
“Thanks!” Yunli leapt over and landed right on her seat. It was good to have fully functioning legs again. “With the way you yelled, I thought you were in danger.”
“Hehe, nah! Only getting your attention. It’s nice to see you, but I thought you’d be participating?”
“Oh really?” Yunli put her hands on her hips. “I could be saying the same about you.” Yunli watched the girl’s face go pale as she rubbed the back of her head while laughing awkwardly.
“Haha, weeeeellll I was gonna, but I’m honestly still really exhausted from everything. How could I debut proudly in dedication of my masters, only to immediately get knocked out!? No way. That would be too embarrassing!”
“Nice story. Although I guess I’m not one to talk. Between the prize sword being switched and everything else, I care less about this tournament than I already did. Also, I’m pretty sure Lingsha would prefer I’d rest!” Yunli nodded confidently.
“Oh? So now you use my medical advice?”
March and Yunli turn around to see the healer in question smirking at them as she walks over.
“If it didn’t suit your interest, you’d be running headfirst into a fight right now.” She said to Yunli.
“Untrue! I’d have a plan at the very least. Either way, at least I’m resting; unlike some other dimwit who was hurt worse.”
“Do you think his shoulder is better?” March asked, remembering his match with Feixiao.
Lingsha nodded. “Not to worry. He stopped by a couple days ago for some guidance and ointment. Yanqing should be feeling like his old self again. Although…” Lingsha couldn’t help but look at Yunli.
“Wh-what? I haven’t picked any fights with him. Haven’t even seen him in a couple days.” Aside from a few texts, Yunli was honestly pretty wiped the last few days.
Lingsha smiled. “Oh I believe you. I’m only looking at you because I can’t help but notice how lovely your hair smells.”
Yunli was about to make nothing of the compliment, until she remembered how extraordinary Lingsha’s sense of smell was and the last time she washed her hair. Yunli casually faced forward. “Thank you.”
“Hehe, you’re welcome.” Lingsha teased, playing along with Yunli. No need to cause a scene or bring up what she already knows. Yanqing had a similar reaction whenever she brought up his subtle change in scent. She’ll be sure to discuss proper safety practices in a more private setting.
The crowd roared with excitement as the Ringmaster took to the battlefield, awaiting his opponent. He seemed as calm as ever. Even as his opponent approached with a glorious spear.
“Wooooo! Go! Yanqing!” March cheered. “C’mon Yunli! Show some festive spirit!”
“No thanks. You have more than enough for the both of us.”
“Aw don’t be like that! I get that the two of you have your differences and bicker a lot, but I know he’d definitely cheer for you!”
March watched the girl pout and turn her head as she crossed her arms. Looks like the girl was stuck in her ways. Oh well. March cuffed her hands around her mouth and continued her cheers. “G-”
“KICK HIS BUTT, YANQING!” Yunli shouted, her face burning red. The boy’s head perked up and immediately looked in her direction, causing more embarrassment as he smiled and waved. “P-PAY ATTENTION!”
Thankfully, Yanqing went back to focusing. Yunli took a breath. “I swear, he’s so dumb at times.” She said with a smile. Her eyes glanced over to her right to see March wide eyed in utter shock. Yunli looked in the opposite direction. Facing Lingsha was much easier. “What? You wanted me to cheer.”
Now March admittedly didn’t know much about having a rival, but she was a master of knowing a fellow maiden’s heart. Only a blind man could miss that exchange of smiles. Combine that with their other recent behaviors and an interesting picture could be painted.
“Wait, are you two-”
“March, I still have the right to make you train rigorously! Do you wanna run laps right now?”
“N-No ma’am!” March faced forward. That reaction was more than enough information for her. Looks like her two masters weren’t as at odds as she thought. She couldn’t express it, but that genuinely made her happy. The both of them had far too many grown up responsibilities. It’s good to act your age, or relative age in this case.
“Oh! The match is starting!”
All eyes were on Yanqing as he took the initiative, leaping over a wide sweeping attack and staying loose as he dodged incoming spear thrusts, gradually making his way inside to limit his foes range of motion.
“Hmm, no flying swords yet. Guess it would make more sense to ruin the advantage of a spear instead of out ranging it. Now the guy can’t defend easily.” March commented.
“Wow. Someone has been taking their training seriously.” A proud woman remarked.
All three of them looked behind them to see Feixiao sitting casually like she'd been there the entire time. The general gave a cheeky grin and pointed back at the arena.
“Never mind me. Let’s watch our young friend strut his stuff.”
Yunli did just that. “It’s not like the winner isn’t obvious. Yanqing is clearly warming up.”
“I did say strut his stuff, didn’t I?”
Yanqing ducked under another swipe that went into an overhead that he quickly sidestepped into a forward slash that made contact with an armored torso. Good, his shoulder was feeling better than ever! Yanqing lunged backwards and sent his swords flying, making them swarm around his opponent!
“I can tell you’ve put countless days into your spearmanship.” He praised, watching the warrior deflect the blades at efficient speeds. Not a movement was wasted. Although he was certain Dan Heng would put the man to shame. “Might as well put my practice to good use.” Yanqing poised himself, taking his with both hands.
Feixiao couldn’t hide her joy. “That’s it. Don’t wait for all your openings. Make them with your own might!”
Near the entrance, at higher spectator seats, Jing Yuan watches his student fight valiantly. He doubted that he could catch every match, but the first and last one should be seen with his own eyes.
“He’s fairing well,” said General Huaiyan, approaching from behind. Looks like Yanqing has made a full recovery from the battle.
“No small part to Ms. Lingsha I’d imagine. That boy, I gave him time off to rest but knowing him, he snuck in training.”
“One can hardly stand still when people like my granddaughter and The Merlin’s Claw are around.”
“Hehe, true enough.” Jing Yuan hasn’t gotten much time with Yanqing after giving him leave, but he could tell that each strike had calm and measured strength. Even from here, Jing Yuan could see the look of joy and freedom in his pupil’s eyes.
“He’s gained a new sense of confidence in himself. You wouldn’t happen to know why that is, would you?”
General Huaiyan stroked his beard as he hid his grin. “Hmmm, I was informed he did a devastating blow against Hoolay, as well as did joint sparring with Yunli against Feixiao several days ago. If that doesn’t breed confidence in a swordsman, I don’t know what will.”
“Such a straightforward answer. As if there’s more under the surface regarding those events.” Jing Yuan smirked.
“I’m too old to be spreading rumors and assumptions, Jing Yuan. I only speak in truths and facts. Regardless, it looks like your apprentice is ready to claim his first win.”
Yanqing went straight into the fray, clashing with the spear head on and sending sparks flying with every parry. With two hands he ensured each strike held power too oppressive to merely shrug off. Again he ducked under a sharp blade that went into an overhead, but this time he was far too close to guarantee a safe dodge.
“I got you!” The warrior cried, certain of his victory as he swung down with all his might.
That’s when a new yet familiar sound rang in people’s ears. The heavy impact of steel hitting the flat of a blade. Yanqing stood firmly rooted, his hands gripping the hilt and arms braced. He blocked it. Yanqing full on blocked the attack and brought it to a dead stop before pushing the spear up off him with all his might. As the warrior recoiled, his body was left completely open. Yanqing pivoted on his front right foot, spinning into a strong horizontal slash. The momentum slammed straight into his foe and sent the warrior flying out of the area. The masses were stunned, all except for General Huaiyan, who let out a hardy laugh from seeing such a familiar move.
“AND THAT’S THE MATCH!” Owlbert yelled, prompting an eruption of cheers.
A quick wider stance followed by a powerful attack thanks to momentum and timing. March had seen that countless times over the weeks, but never from Yanqing. Her, Feixiao, and Lingsha all looked at Yunli to see the girl wide eyed and speechless.
Feixiao couldn’t help but chuckle. “Haha, they say imitation is the greatest form of flattery. Alright everyone. Let's go and congratulate his first win of many.”
xxxxxxx
As far as first matches go, that couldn’t have gone better! Yanqing took a swig of his water bottle as he watched contestants and visitors alike roam. He couldn’t help but think of his new friend he meant not long ago.
“I wonder how Luka is doing?” Yanqing was curious enough to go see the leaderboards, but was immediately side tracked at the sight of his friends walking his way. Water nearly went down the wrong pipe when he realized Feixiao was there too.
“W-Wow. I wasn't expecting all of you to pay me a visit.” He looked at Yunli, her eyes squinting at him only made his smile more smug. “What? Didn’t expect a Loufu Swordmaster to understand Zhuming principles? I’ve only seen you do that move like a hundred times by now.”
“Don’t go getting a full head! I wouldn’t say you understood anything, but that’s nothing new for you. I’ll admit, it caught me by surprise, but your feet weren’t even squared with your shoulders!”
March leaned to Lingsha and Feixiao. “I think we’re interrupting something.”
“I’d say we are right where we need to be.” The general said with a smile.
Yunli crossed her arms and huffed, “You got a long way to go before you can start bragging.”
“Well, it’s not like I’m not willing to learn. If you’re good at it then maybe teach instead of lecturing.”
“Ha! Teach you? I already have enough hard headed people to not listen to me.”
March was appalled! “I listen! Sometimes I just don’t get it…”
“You get more than he does. Sorry Mr. Footwork, but I’ll pass.”
Yunli walked by Yanqing, having nothing left to say. Well, not entirely. Her feet stopped for a moment, still refusing to turn around. “It was pretty annoying for me to blink and see you in a different stance.”
Yanqing smiled, watching Yunli wander off. If he had to guess, she was off to go train.
“Was that her way of complimenting you?” March said dryly. “Honestly, she could stand to be more upfront.”
Lingsha giggled at the remark. “Hehe, that’s simply how Yunli is. Especially when she feels challenged. In a way, that praise was her giving the utmost respect to Yanqing.”
“Ever so, a thumbs up costs nothing.”
Yanqing gave a soft smile as he gave a shrug. “I don’t mind. That’s how Yunli is. Either way, I won’t lose to her.” He said, confidently nodding. However, March seemed unconvinced as she approached with her hand firmly on her chin. Yanqing tilted his head. “Umm, is there something on my face?”
“Are you and Master Yunli together?”
With six words, Yanqing was knocked off guard way more effectively than anything his recent opponent did. “Wh-Whaat…Why would you ask that out of nowhere?” He was certain he was red despite feeling his blood freeze.
“That response answers all I needed.” March leaned back, not pressing further. “Both of you need better poker faces.”
“What are you on about!? You’re just going around assuming stuff!”
“A young lady’s intuition is not to be underestimated!” March stuck her tongue out teasingly before smiling. “Both of you still argue like back alley cats but something about it recently has felt…softer.”
Yanqing stood silently, flustered and unsure of what to say. Last thing he wanted to do was get an earful. Thankfully Lingsha spoke up.
“Now, now, let the young swordsman focus on his matches. It would be embarrassing for this to ruin his momentum.”
“Oops.” March covered her mouth. “Sorry.” Came out muffled through closed fingers.
Feixiao laughed at the girl as she walked over to Yanqing to ruffle his hair. “Keep up the good work; that was a fine match. Also, if you’re so keen on learning multiple styles, feel free to visit the Yaoqing anytime. I have a feeling you’d enjoy our style. I can teach you a few moves personally.”
“Pouching another general’s apprentice are we?” Lingsha raised a brow. “How sly of you.”
“I am a Foxian, and I doubt Jing Yuan would mind, or Huaiyan for that matter. Nothing wrong with well rounded students. I would gladly make time.”
“Anything but actual paperwork, is that right?”
Feixiao completely ignored the correct accusation with a laugh as she walked off. “I’ll be sure to catch your final match. And remember…” she turned around, pointing right at the boy and his student. “A swordsman may live on the battlefield, but their reasons for wielding one are more often than not found away from it. The atmosphere here is pretty festive. Make sure to live in it.”
Yanqing and March understood Feixiao’s words clearly. Maybe it was when they fought Hoolay or the days they spent training. Whatever the case, somewhere along the journey, they realized how precious every step was together. The two of them stood up straight before bowing in respect as Feixiao departed with her lesson.
Lingsha shook her head in disbelief. “And there she goes. Honestly, that lesson must come easy when you call yourself The Lacking General. Her scent is confidence and strength itself.”
“Still, I don’t think she’s wrong.” March smiled. “I like this lesson. In a way, it’s no different than the path of the Trailblaze. Hehe, maybe I should be the one teaching my masters?”
“I’ll consider it, if you enter the ring.”
“Wow! Look at the time! I promised to get some souvenirs for everyone. Catch you later! Good luck on your next match!” March runs off, never looking back.
And then there were two. Suddenly Yanqing felt as if he should be getting ready for his next match. “Well if you excuse me-”
“Hold it, young man.” She stopped him in his tracks, watching his body turn back around to see a face similar to Yunli’s. “You seem worried.”
“I don’t know what you’re about to say.”
“Hehe, relax. Like I said, no need to stress you out on such an important day. I swear, all swordsmen seem to be cut from similar cloth; that goes double for you and Yunli. Yanqing?”
“Ma’am?”
“Do right by her. That doesn’t mean to be perfect, or to even try and get along all the time. No doubt the two of you will make many, many mistakes. Just be real with her. Genuinely. She’s family to me.”
Lingsha’s voice was so soft, and filled with fondness as she spoke of the girl. Yanqing looked her right in the eyes and gave his word.
“I promise.”
“That’s all I could ask for. Also don’t worry, I will kick her butt if she doesn’t do the same.”
“Why do I feel like you’re sometimes scarier than any general I’ve met?”
Lingsha giggled, a smirk growing on her face. “Hehe, well, you’ve met Jaiqou. Never underestimate a healer. We just might surprise you.”

The day continued as planned. Battle after battle, Yanqing claimed victory. As promised, Yunli returned after a decent run. It was painful to admit that she could use a little more speed in her regimen if she didn’t want Yanqing to run circles around her. Perhaps asking for tips wasn’t the worst idea?
“Maybe I can swallow my pride just a little?” Yunli thought, watching the boys final match against the man named Luka from the very top of the area away from the crowds.
If she were caught then she would easily get yelled at; that is if the person was brave enough to follow her jump off the ship. She doubted that she’d get the opportunity to make that play. All eyes were on the match. Although it wasn’t exactly a test of martial prowess anymore, but one of honor and respect.
The boy had put down his sword and gone hand to hand. Yanli could see the pure bliss in his eyes as he had fun. As she anticipated, Yanqing won. How strange; Yunli would’ve been annoyed by this a few weeks ago. While she still believed he didn’t quite respect his swords, she could hear the joy in each blade more clearly. That alone was worthy of respect. As for the more intimate bond between them, well, wanting him to win was only natural! Yeah! It makes his future losses to her more special!
“He better not get a big head over this. Next time I’ll definitely participate and wipe the floor with him!” Her mind was made up; the resolve was absolute!
Yunli would not be deterred by the boy’s smile on the Jumbotron as he waved. Next time, it’ll be her! Until then he could have this victory. As a matter of fact…
“Hmm, now here’s a thought…” Yunli laughed to herself, scheming as she did it. Without a moment to waste, Yunli left the ship.
xxxxxxx
Today could not have gone any better. Good food, good friends, good fights, and most importantly, victory! Yanqing couldn’t think of a happier moment than right now as he carried his new sword home. Well, there was a couple days ago, but that was more fulfilling rather than a feeling of triumph. Now that he thought about it more, this might be the greatest week of his life!
The boy hummed happily as he turned the final corner to his home. To his surprise, Yunli stood on his front steps with hands on her hips and eyes trained on him.
“…Why are you blocking my door?”
“Isn’t it obvious? Your day isn’t over yet.” Yunli drew her sword. “One final match. A real test of your skills.”
The atmosphere was rather perfect. Orange light bathed the quiet streets as wind blew through the bamboo thickets. A final challenger; the last obstacle on his journey home. It felt straight out of one of his movies.
Yanqing put down the sword case and stood proudly. With air in his lungs and eyes facing forward he confidently said, “No thanks.”
Yanli blinked twice. “Wh-What?” She lowered her sword.
“No thank you. I’m good.”
“You’re good!? What’s with the carefree attitude!? I go out of my way to wait for you here and you refuse a proper dual!?”
“Yunli, I’ve been fighting all day. Excuse me for being a little tired. Also, knowing you, this is a ploy to get me to bet the sword.” He watched her immediately turn her head and attempt to whistle like he didn’t read her like a book. “You’re unbelievable.”
Yunli whipped her head back around. “And you’re annoying! Man, I was ready for a fight too.”
“I can see that. In truth, despite following Miss Lingsha’s medical advice, I wouldn’t say I’m completely back to normal. Fighting you would definitely agitate my injury, then she’d be upset at both of us.”
A chill ran up Yunli’s spine. An angry Lingsha was not to be taken lightly. With no other choice, she deflated, sitting on the steps to the home. “Fine. I guess I’ll have to challenge you the next time we meet.” Her head was held in her left hand as she sighed.
“Ah, right. Now that the War Dance is over, we’ll be seeing each other less. When…do you leave?”
“Tomorrow afternoon.” Why did it hurt to say? She could feel a twinge in her chest. “It’s my last night here.”
“I see.” It was sooner than he thought. “Well if that’s the case…” Yanqing picked up the sword and made his way past Yunli to open the door. “I suppose I should make you a farewell dinner.”
Yunli’s eyes widened. She looked over her shoulder to see the boy’s ears burn bright red. “What happened to being tired?” Yunli stood up, poking his back lightly.
“I’m not too tired to cook. I have to eat too.”
“Let’s not play this game. I don’t doubt your sincerity, but are you seriously telling me that after a victory like today, you’re not aiming for the best outcome possible? How greedy of you.” She teased further, blushing all the while.
“Well what about you!?” He turned around, a little surprised to see her so close. “You could have challenged me anywhere since you have my number. I would’ve shown up, but you chose to come to my house.”
“That’s- it was a spur of the moment plan! I was here to kick your butt.”
“So you would’ve left me defeated without a new sword if you won? You're brutal but you have tact.”
“Ha! I have no problem taking the wind out of your sails. However…” Yunli scratched the back of her head. “I would stick around. Don’t see why I would run off like a bandit.”
“Because you basically would be.” Yanqing couldn’t help but playfully roll his eyes. This was more tiring than a fight. He opened the door . “You coming in or what? Either way, I’m making dinner.”
“Hold your horses! I was honest, so answer my previous question.”
Why was she so relentless!? Yanqing walked inside. “I’m frankly just happy you’re here, with me.” He confessed. Being genuine was a bit harder than he thought. Didn’t help that she knew how to press his buttons. Yunli didn’t respond, but he heard her footsteps grow closer. The golden light from the outside world dwindled as the door shut behind him.
“Hey doofus.” She called out.
Yanqing turned around to see what she wanted. Somehow, he didn’t expect it to be him. Her arms were around his shoulders in seconds, pulling him into a warm kiss much gentler than the person it came from. Once again, Yunli kept him guessing.
Yunli slowly planted her feet back on the ground as she let him go, only to feel his arms hold her waist and pull her into a deeper, more passionate kiss that made her gasp. Unbelievable. The second they gained privacy, the sword was cast aside and they were making the same ridiculous decisions as last time. Only now they were quicker to the draw and far more confident, or maybe comfortable was a better description? Yunli was perfectly okay staying right here, enjoying the moment. There was a thousand things they could’ve said to each other, yet she knew they would all fail to reach the meaning of their feelings like this kiss would. To think Yanqing could hold her so aggressively, and yet so carefully as well. It made her body feel so weightless. He didn’t want her to go at all; and she couldn’t help but kiss back with the same desire. She was going to miss him so much.
Slowly, the kiss broke. Their limbs stayed tied around one another as they maintained eye contact.
“What happened to being tired?” Yunli uttered, a little breathless. They both giggled at her words. Truly they were helpless.
“Hehe, shut up.” He could stare at her for hours. Feixiao’s words rung clearly in his head as he looked back on every moment with this girl.
“Make m-” She couldn’t even finish before he stole her lips again. Yanli had let her guard down; how careless of her. Looks like they were going to have a match after all. Yunli would never say it aloud but deep down, just like in her room, she wanted Yanqing to win. Sparring is about learning after all. She can win another time.

Chapter Text
If Yunli was being honest with herself, she would say she’d consider herself a very proud person. I mean why wouldn’t she be? Her strength was extraordinary and her swordsmanship was keen enough to be a part of the octet. Pride came easily but she wasn’t immune to healthy humbling now and again. That being said, briskly walking back to her inn early in the morning for the second time was outrageous. Taking the walk of shame once was humbling. Twice however, now that’s just down right upsetting. At least the first time she was alone. Now she was being occupied by the culprit!
Yanqing held her hand tightly as they took the quickest and most inconspicuous paths, like two cats darting between alleyways avoiding the early morning risers.
Yunli couldn’t believe her declaration yesterday evening ended up being yet another all nighter. “Can we not move so fast? I’m not exactly nimble at the moment.” She grunted.
“You’re the one who didn’t want me to carry you.”
“You have a lot to learn about mercy and sparring dignity. Not every gesture is free of shame.”
“No offense, but only people with too much pride to swallow think that. Funny, considering you-”
“Do not finish that sentence!” Her cheeks burned red. “I swear, you don’t know how to quit while you’re ahead.”
Yanqing couldn’t hide his smirk. Maybe he was being a tad over the top, but it was rare to see Yunli on the back foot like this. “Fine, I’ll hold my tongue. Your reaction is more than enough to hold me over until we meet again.”
“Pfft, please; you’re gonna be bummed and bored out of your mind the moment I step on the starskiff.”
Her little taunt was left to hang in the air. Yanqing’s ears grew red, proving he heard it but made no argument against it. Strange. Yunli didn’t know to feel flattered or embarrassed by the silent confession.
The two finally made it to the side of the inn where her room was located. Going in through the front might awaken her grandpa, and she wasn’t expecting thrilled over the idea of being seen by anyone. They both looked at the slight breeze coming from her room window on the second floor.
“So, any reason why you left your window unlocked?” Yanqing crossed his arms. “Kinda a weird thing to do if you were only planning on fighting me yesterday.”
Yunli turned her nose up at the subtle but true accusation. “It’s not my fault you're predictable.”
“Yeah okay.” He said, his voice oozing with sarcasm. Yanqing summoned his flying swords and gently placed Yunli onto one as it rose up. “You got it?”
“As long as you don’t lose focus.” Her knees wobbled a little.
The fact that he chose to ride these was actually insane. Then again, her choice in swords wasn’t exactly normal either. Yunli reached out to the window frame the moment she could, quickly opening the window enough to pounce inside to stable ground. At last, freedom from shame!
“Okay…” her muscles relaxed. Yunli
quickly turned around and stuck her out the window. “Thank-”
Her gratitude was interrupted. She wasn’t prepared for Yanqing to be floating right outside her window, his hands softly holding her face as he stole a brief, gentle kiss from her lips.
“Wha-what was that for?” Yunli blubbered, her heart fluttering.
Yanqing was pinker than March’s hair. “Y’know…cause I can’t exactly give you a goodbye kiss later around everyone. So I thought I’d do it now.” He looked down at his feet. It wasn’t long before he saw Yunli’s hand reach out, raising his head by the chin.
No witty remarks were uttered. Instead she returned his goodbye, leaning into it with care and a kindness they both grew very fond of. Yunli slowly broke the kiss and looked him in the eye. “You shouldn’t spring important moments like this on me. I wasn’t ready.” She pouted, flustered by the boy for the hundredth time. “I will text you when I get back home safely.”
Farewells were typically a sore spot for Yanqing. There’s a lot of moments for a long life species, yet the best ones always felt the shortest. Still, this didn’t feel sad at all. This entire experience felt like the beginning of something new. He had faith in many more moments. But for now…
“Farewell, Miss Yunli.” He smiled softly.
“Hehe. Until next time, Lieutenant Yanqing.”
The young boy slowly floated down from her window, choosing to walk off the way he came. Yunli was certain this was the first time he didn’t look like he was in a rush to do anything. At first she feared it might be awkward later on. After all, she would most definitely see him when he officially sends everyone off. After this however, nothing felt unsaid.
Yunli closed her window and found herself flopping onto her bed again. Thank goodness she snuck back in early. An hour nap wouldn’t hurt. The idea of packing right this instant felt way too exhausting. Maybe she could’ve persuaded him to help her. Then again, if he got caught in her room then that’s a different headache. It would also ruin the kiss. It might’ve been their calmest one, yet her lips were tingling like sparklers.
“Damn him.” She muttered, grazing her lips. “He’s gotten better since the first time.” Maybe she could live with this humbling experience just this once and hold Yanqing in higher esteem. Perhaps he’s earned it.
xxxxxxx
“The next time I see that brat, I’m punching him in his stupid face!” Yunli declared, huffing as she slouched in her seat. “I can’t believe he brought the sword to gloat!”
“Yes, that was rather…unexpected.” General Huaiyan sighed, stroking his beard as tried wrapping his head around the taunt. “Just when I thought the boy was far more mature than his age.”
“Right!? You would think a lieutenant would know how to act!”
“Now, now, settle down. Titles mean nothing more often than not. Let’s not pretend your track record of choosing the high road is any better. You’d flaunt the sword too.”
“Not at a farewell drop off!”
“Like that makes it any better. Regardless, it’s not like his actions stopped you from promising to make him a sword.”
“How else am I supposed to lure the jerk to our ship? Once it’s to my standards, I will get him to fly over. Then I can kick his butt, keep the sword, and take back the prize. That’ll show him, hmph!”
The old forger laughed. His granddaughter never lacked ambition. “That’s definitely a plan of sorts. One I can’t even fault you for. Final farewells aside, did you enjoy your trip to the Loufu?”
A simple question, yet it brought forth a flood of memories that flashed from the calm moments of training, to the dire moments of facing death and saving comrades. Then, there were the truly unexpected memories. Forging a friendship with the Trailblazers, gaining a talented student, and a rival that tricked her into thinking about him on multiple occasions. Yunli leaned back into her seat and gazed at the stars through the window opposite of her. To think in the vastness of it all, she found so much on a single ship. A warm yet bashful grin snuck onto her lips. It had been awhile since life felt so fun; since she lived like her parents would be waiting to welcome her home.
“Memorable in every way possible.”
The old war veteran smiled. “Good, good. My goal was accomplished then. Cherish those feelings. Seek more horizons. In the end, they’ll all lead you to achieving what it is you want most.”
“Finding all the cursed swords.”
“Well yes, but far more than that. I suppose that’s something you must ponder a little longer.”
“Whaaaat?” She deflated. “Grandpa~”
“Don’t give me that. It would lose all meaning if I spelled out everything. I will say this however, keep on this path and I know both your forging skills and swordsmanship will reach new limits. Who knows? Maybe you’ll be half as good as me one day.”
“Tah! More like twice as good.”
“I look forward to it.” He grinned, excited by the idea.
The two of them shared a laugh, one filled with hope and unburdened by the future. Huaiyan couldn’t help but look at how far Yunli has gotten over the years. It was hard not to feel a sense of pride. She had a lot of growing to do but that would come with more time and experience. Thanks to this trip, he was more confident in the fact she wouldn’t go through it alone.
“So, what exactly would you call Yanqing?”
Yunli froze instantly as her grandfather wore a cheeky grin. Her carefree attitude was replaced with bashfulness again as her face grew pink. She rubbed the back of her head and pouted.
“I thought titles were supposed to be pointless.” She grumbled.
“Hahahaha! Fair enough! I shall mind my business for just a little longer. I have no doubt Miss Lingsha yapped your ear off enough.”
Yunli covered her face. “Her text messages wouldn’t stop yesterday. She might as well have sent me an entire medical book.”
“You can’t say she doesn’t care.”
“Yeah, but I can say she doesn’t know how to summarize!”
Yunli dreaded going over all the information again. She knew Lingsha wasn’t going to leave her alone until every point got across. Oh well. She could read it while drawing up sword designs. Damn that Yanqing; he really did alter her foreseeable future.
“Mark my words, I’m definitely winning our next fight!”
xxxxxxxx
“Achoo!” A dreadful chill ran up Yanqing’s spine as he shook his body.
“Looks like someone’s thinking about you.” Lingsha teased as she went through his recent medical history. “I bet I can guess who.”
“You say that with sweetness in your voice, but I bet she’s cursing my existence.”
“I wouldn’t put it past it. Good thing she’s gone for now.” She firmly placed the papers on her desk and looked him dead in the eye. “Now you have no more distractions and can finally let your shoulder heal. Isn’t that right, lieutenant?”
“Y-Yes ma’am.” A small prescription bottle of painkillers was thrown into his lap.
“One a day for two weeks. Nothing more than wooden dummies and swords if you get the itch to practice. I don’t want to see you back in here until it’s time for a routine physical, and don’t you dare try to go to our esteemed dragon lady if you can’t follow these simple instructions. Do I make myself crystal clear!?”
“Yes, Miss Lingsha.” He said, feeling a bit guilty but not regretting his recent actions. “Thank you for your support.”
“Thank me with rest. Off you go.” She pointed at the door.” Yanqing quickly gathered his things and left. Lingsha couldn’t help but sigh. “Honestly, I’ve traded one impulsive cat for another. I must be attracting them at this rate.”
Yanqing’s legs took him right outside the alchemy commission before finally stopping. Lingsha really was terrifying when she wanted to be. He almost felt bad Mr. Scott’s dealing with her. That man never stood a chance. A breath of relief left his lungs as he sat down on a bench. Starskiffs breezed by like normal, yet they seemed slower than usual. Perhaps the fast pace of his life recently was to blame?
“Back to business as usual I guess. Hehe, why does that sound so…dull?”
He spread his arms out, taking up the entire bench in the process. It was the duty of a Cloud Knight to keep the peace, and he will always fight for that. However, this was the first time a moment to himself didn’t feel quite right. March and Yunli’s antics were unpredictable, but also fun; especially when General Feixiao added to the mix.
“Maybe I should try to hang out with Sushang and Guinaifen more? I am still technically on leave; those two always have something going on.” Yanqing considered himself fairly sociable, but admittedly, it wasn’t often that he took initiative with casual encounters. Maybe it was time to change that, or at least make an honest effort.
“No use sitting here thinking about it.” He stood up and readied himself. Hopefully they weren’t doing anything too crazy. He was not going to upset Lingsha again. As he took his first steps, a buzz in his pocket drew his attention. Yanqing pulled out his phone to find a message he was told he would get, but was surprised all the same by it.
“Just docked into port safely. If you bombard me with texts I will mute you. I have work to do.”
Even over text, Yunli found a way to push buttons. She was the one who wanted to let him know when she got home in the first place!
“Why is she like this?” He groaned in mental exhaustion as he thought of a reply.
“Kay. Glad you're safe and good luck.”
“…I’ll call you later when I can. Bye.”
Such a blunt and simple response, and yet it made his face burn. Yanqing put his phone away and went on about his business. Looks like things were still a little different after all; a new normal. A new peace.
xxxxxxxx
For most, normalcy came back at the War Dance. For the Divine Foresight, not so much. Aside from the obvious Borison incident and the questioning of his judgment, it took a little over a week to square away all official documents regarding the actual martial arts celebration. Precious sleep was lost, but Jing Yuan didn’t find any of it pointless. After all, part of the work was reconnecting with Belobog and meeting an old friend’s descendant. That alone was worth its weight in gold.
All in all, everything worked out for the better and he finally found the time to go for a walk over to his star apprentice’s home. Sure he could’ve summoned Yanqing at any time but the walk was always nice and the fact that the boy hadn’t bothered to stop by after receiving leave was a good sign. It typically took no more than two days before he was restless, but lately it would seem Yanqing had actually learned a lesson Jing Yuan desperately tried to teach countless times. The art of enjoying down time. As he approached the boy’s house, a small wooden plaque in the shape of a sword hung from the doorknob. Of course he was training.
“Hehe, baby steps I suppose.” Jing Yuan walked back down the stairs and took the trail leading into the bamboo thicket where Yanqing liked to train. Multiple medical bills had found their way onto his desk over the past few weeks. Jing Yuan doubted that his student had told Lingsha to pass on the bill instead of paying. What was more likely was this was Lingsha’s cheeky way of keeping him in the loop on Yanqing’s health. It was nice, if not a little pricey. Naturally, Jing Yuan footed the bill. Not that Yanqing couldn’t, but he thought the boy deserved some kind of kudos for his recent accomplishments. Knowing him, the pressure he felt on his shoulders was both a badge of honor and a sense of great anxiety.
“I should treat him to a meal tonight.” Jing Yuan thought. It would be a nice way to properly catch up on recent events. He was actually looking forward to it. It’s not often that Yanqing has full stories and experiences Jing Yuan wasn’t around to witness. May many more opportunities like this come in the future.
“Yanqing?” He called out as he reached a clearing. Practice dummies and wooden blades were left in shambles from left to right all over the area.
If Jing Yuan didn’t know better, he’d think the tools had come to life to fight a great battle. The culprit of the battlefield now laid under a tree, limbs completely spread out while he took a nap. Jing Yuan could only shake his head and smile. He knew the power of a good nap, but to sleep out here still held a slight risk. Aside from beasts, the occasional mara struck may cross someone’s path. It would be best to move Yanqing.
Jing Yuan made sure to approach carefully to not disturb the boy’s slumber. As he got closer, something new came into view. Beside Yanqing’s face was his phone propped up by his folded jacket. A quick glance was all it took for Jing Yuan to see Yunli on the other side. At first he thought it was a picture, but upon closer inspection it was very much a live video of the girl passed out in her own training area.
“Just when you think you’ve seen it all.” He grabbed a piece of splinter wood and replaced the jacket with it before draping the clothing over Yanqing like a cover. They could talk another time. For now, might as well continue his walk around the thicket to insure its safety.
“Oh, to be young.” He said softly, grinning as he brandished his weapon. After all, students do take after their teachers. He could use a little training anyways.
Notes:
This was fun. Maybe the next thing I’ll write is another Caelus and Stelle oneshot, or Sparkday. Regardless, thanks for reading.
