A Hostage to Fortune

Summary:

Mara wasn't the sort of person to make for an interesting isekai protagonist. Unfortunately, the universe—or whoever was in charge of it—had other ideas.

“JJK?”

Was a simple web search really so difficult? “Jujutsu Kaisen. It’s about a kid that swallows a bunch of cursed fingers and becomes a demon’s host. The cosplayer in the video is dressed as his teacher, Gojo Satoru.” Good deed accomplished, she hit ‘post’ and closed out of Instagram just in time for the announcement that Group 3 could now board.

If she had waited just a few minutes longer, she would have seen the following response:

“I think you might have mistyped the title. I just searched for it and nothing with that name exists??”

Chapter Text

Mara was half-heartedly scrolling through her Instagram feed as she waited to board her flight when a short video caught her eye. In it, a white haired man wearing a blindfold was weaving through a colorful crowd on the streets of Harajuku—a place she only recognized thanks to all the research she’d done to prepare for her trip.

At the bottom of the video, the caption read: “Can someone pls tell me who this knockoff Kakashi is supposed to be????”

Now, usually Mara wouldn’t pay much mind to a post like this, but she was curious as to what sort of replies OP had received so far. She hadn’t watched more than the first few episodes of the anime, but she’d spent enough time online to know that the fanbase was rabid about the guy.

She clicked on the comments.

“lol. what a weirdo.”

“Genderbent 2B?”

“Gotta love harajuku fashion!”

“How the hell does he see where he’s going?”

“Not a cosplayer. Just a freak <3”

Surprised, Mara continued scrolling, but not a single one of the hundreds of comments seemed to recognize Gojo Satoru.

Mara double-checked the username, confirming that OP was one of the Tokyo based influencers she’d started following once her travel plans were finalized. This particular vlogger focused mostly on food and fashion, but she also had a few anime reviews mixed in with the more mainstream stuff. It was honestly pretty weird that none of her followers recognized a major character from one of the biggest shonen series of the last few years.

Feeling magnanimous, Mara decided to post her own comment: “That’s the overpowered teacher from JJK.”

She received a reply almost immediately.
