Chapter 1: Requests Info
Summary:
How to make a request!
Notes:
I love WoWP, and when I went looking for fanfictions, I noticed there are less than I expected.
I especially wish there were more Alex/Mason or Justin/Juliet fics.
Chapter Text
Hello all! I don’t know if very many people will be interested, but I’m going to make this be a request style fic!
Here are the current do’s and don’ts! I’ll update if need be.
DO:
- Make your requests on chapter 1
- Be as detailed or as vague as you’d like!
- HOWEVER- if requesting with an OC you would need to be extremely detailed. I don’t often work with OC’s, more so not with other people’s OC’s, hence the need for as much detail as possible. (Please note: I may or may not do requests with OC’s. It is not guaranteed.)
- Suggest specific categories- fluff, angst, romance, etc. (It is not required to name a specific story category.)
- Use quotes to center your center or base your idea around.
DO NOT request the following. I will NOT DO THEM.
- Incest
- Pedophilic relationships
- Reader inserts (or reader X character)
- Graphic NSFW/Smut or Other heavily graphic content.
Each chapter will be labeled with the request and requester, so you know it’s yours. If I can respond to your comment (AO3 or Wattpad) I will let you know if/when I post so you know which chapter title/number to go to in order to read the story/chapter you requested. If your request is something that would potentially span multiple chapters, I may end up creating a fic just for it and will label it as such. However, it is more likely they will be individual chapters or just a set of 2 if I feel a continuation is necessary.
Thanks! Happy requesting! Happy reading!

Chapter 3: Secrets Unveiled
Summary:
NOTE: It’s been a while since I’ve seen Wizards of Waverly Place, so please forgive me for any inconsistencies with the canon storyline, or attribute it to non-canon writing, which this will likely involve anyway. Thanks! I hope you enjoy!
PROMPT: At my worst, I worry you’ll realize you deserve better. At my best, I worry you won’t. (I’ve never been better.)
Thinking of using this prompt for a little mini-series about WoWP, so it’ll follow a few (connected but technically probably still readable as stand alone pieces) one-shots. This turned a little bit away from where I originally was inspired to go, but may still follow the prompt in further updates. We shall see.
Chapter Text
Alex was frozen in place, her stomach dropped as Mason bolted out the door. Dinner had been going so well- they had been going so well- so why was he leaving so suddenly? Insecurity bubbled inside her at the thought that maybe it hadn’t been going as well as she thought - if history was anything to go by her track records with boyfriends wasn’t exactly great. Neither were friendships for that matter, but that was a whole other topic that she brushed aside for now.
Quickly, biting her lip to stop it from wobbling, she threw down her napkin and rushed after him. She was only a minute behind, so she rushed in an effort to catch up. The door closing behind her stopped Harper from following.
“Mason!” she called desperately, “Mason, what’s wrong? Why are you leaving?” she managed to snag his coat sleeve by her fingertips and he turned, looking nervous and pained. “What’s wrong?” she repeated the question in a softer voice.
“I’m sorry, I have to go.” He parroted the words back, planting a quick soft kiss to her forehead, “I just have to go. I’ll call you, I promise.” He made it a few steps away when her voice found her again, “What? I don’t understand- Do you not- is there-” she cut herself off, “Is there someone else?” She choked on the question, her heart pounding harshly.
Her eyes burned, and she knew tears would be on the way soon. Mason seemed to choke on air as he sucked in a surprised breath and immediately turned back, rushing to her and grabbing her arms. “What- No! Of course not Alex, there is only you, and I’ll explain everything later, but I have to go.” he met her eyes before looking back up towards the sky worriedly. Confused, she followed his gaze, watching as the clouds cleared enough to see the full moon glowing vividly above them. She immediately turned back when he let go of her arms, watching as he groaned. “Mason?” she gasped his name, hearing the strain in his voice. She watched him stumble a few steps away from her once more, before he leaned heavily into the stone wall, bracing himself on his forearm. “Mason.” she whispered and reached out a hand as she took a tentative step closer. He threw his free arm out backwards, holding it up to tell her to stop
“No, stay away!” he pleaded, keeping himself turned away. “You need to stay away.” he rumbled and she stumbled a step back as she watched the change happen. He gripped at the wall, and she watched his nails become sharp enough that he left scratches in the stone. His hair seemed to lengthen and she swore he let out a growl. The sound was deep and almost guttural as he repeated himself, “Stay away! You need to stay away!”
Moonlight beating down on them, she stared confused with tears starting to fill her eyes. He lightly swung a now clawed hand, a signal warning to match what he just repeated. “Please.” He rasped, a deeper, rougher edge to his voice that reminded her of the wolf-like growl she had just heard. She stared at his hand, the sharp claws that were unfamiliar to her at the end of his long slender fingers, and it hit her so suddenly that she couldn’t help but let out a hiccuping laugh. He stiffened and she cut herself off, biting her lip.
Reaching out she gently tugged on his sleeve, “Mason.” she repeated his name softly, “It’s okay.”
“No, it’s not.” he replied, but didn’t pull his arm away, his sleeve still caught in her fingertips. Quickly she side-stepped him and without thinking leaned into him, her face in his neck and arms wrapping around his chest. “Yes it is.” she mumbled. “You won’t hurt me.” she soothed. Slowly he turned his head and wrapped his free arm around her too, the other still braced on the wall.
“But Alex-”
“Your big secret is that you’re a werewolf, isn’t it?” she leaned back just enough to see his face, and his heart leapt into his throat seeing the tears she had already shed over him. To his surprise, she gave him a watery smile, and the same hiccuping laugh as she continued, “Well my big secret is that I’m a wizard.” It took a second for her words to register, to recognize that she hadn’t been laughing at him, that she hadn’t been afraid when he had growled at her, that she was in fact alright.
“I’m dangerous.” he said simply, feeling his own eyes begin to water. His angel, his Alex, was right here in front of him and didn’t seem to be running away in terror like previous girlfriends had when they accidentally found out his family secret. She continued to hold him even though he knew he looked very wolf-ish. The state that was, according to the whole magical dimension, his most dangerous state. Trying to be gentle he cupped her cheek, and watched mesmerized as she leaned into his touch.
“Not to me.” she assured him.
It was on the way back upstairs to her family’s apartment that she shook her head, tugging him along by the hand. “I get why you didn’t tell me, I mean I didn’t exactly tell you either– but did you really have to act all secrety? You really had me starting to wonder if there was someone else.” She spoke with a grimacing frown, glad her fear was unfounded.
“I’m sorry, Love,” he sighed, kissing her fingertips. “I didn’t realize how much my secret was going to be a problem until it was.”
He paused outside of their door. “I promise.” he declared, placing yet another soft kiss to her fingertips and then to her forehead. “I promise you’re the only one for me.” The smile she gave him made the admission worth the gamble, and he was surprised when she leaned back in to return the feeling with a soft kiss. “I think…” she paused with a sharp breath in, “I think I love you.” she whispered to him, her cheeks flushing red as she turned, an embarrassed but happy look on her face. He barely had time to blink at her, transfixed, before being pulled along back to the dinner they had both left so suddenly maybe 20 minutes ago.
Chapter 4: The Woes of Heartbreak
Summary:
Prompt: “I don’t believe you.”
Centers around the episode where Mason and Alex broke up in Translyvania.
Chapter Text
Alex huddled deeply into the armchair in her family’s lair, it’s familiar comfort not enough to reach her broken heart. She pulled the blanket tighter, willing it to all just disappear. As she was trying to forget and force the shattered pieces of her heart to be fixed, without any success, she wondered if there was perhaps a spell she could use that would make it all better.
Before she could follow that errant thought further, her mother’s hand touched her head, patting soothingly and her perfume wafted gently to Alex’s nose. Her eyes still teary, she raised her head to see her mother’s pained face. “Oh mija.” she murmured, “I know it hurts.” she moved in, and Alex shimmied in the chair so Theresa could fit in the oversized chair with her. Her mother’s arms were safe and held her close. In the back of her mind, she felt like she was a child again, finding solace in the safest place she knew. “I know how much it hurts when you’re heart gets broken, but time will heal it.” her voice was assuring, “And on the bright side, we’re all really happy to see you have feelings.” she tried injecting some humor, to see if that would break Alex out of her stupor, but Alex stayed quiet instead of reacting with a loud, “Hey!” like she had hoped.
How could it hurt this much? She had been through breakups before, with Dean and Riley, and yet neither had set her back or shattered her so completely like this breakup with Mason had. It had just been a normal day with those two, but something was making this one different. “Why does it hurt so much?” she managed to croak out the question, and was met with a sigh as Theresa tried to figure out how she should answer.
Forcing herself back up, she looked into her mother’s eyes. “Why does it hurt so much?” she hiccuped again, fresh tears starting to spill.
With a gentle hand, Theresea Russo began to wipe her daughters tears, the back of her mind cursing the heartbreak her daughter was suffering. “Mason told Juliet he loved her right in front of me.” her heart felt heavy saying it, “Why does it hurt so much?” The repeated question was hard for Theresea to answer.
It was with a deep breath that she found some words for her daughter. “Listen, honey, you’re going to fall in love so many times before you find the one you’ll be with forever.” she bit her lip as she tried to smooth Alex’s hair. “So think of it this way; you’re just one broken heart closer to happily ever after.”
“You mean I’m going to have to go through this more than once?” she stammered out. “But I thought I did find the one.” she cried, tears falling harder than before as she finally admitted what made this breakup turn into a deep heartbreak far harsher than the others. “Mom, I really thought we were going to be together forever.”
“Oh honey.” her heart broke for her daughter. “Most people don’t find ‘the one’ when they’re in high school. You’re just 17 Alex. You have a whole life ahead of you to find the one you love.”
Her lips wobbled as she tried to accept her mother’s wise words, and her mind couldn’t help but flash back to the time that she confronted future Harper about writing stories about their lives as teen fiction novels. Future Harper had asked her why she was so upset, and thought she was heartbroken. The words she said were now back to haunt her, “Did you break up with Mason yet?” It rung in her ears as her mother helped her to her feet and gently guided her to the substation.
“Harper. Jerry. I brought Alex out here because I thought you guys might, you know, have some advice on how to cheer her up.”
“Hmmm.” Harper hummed, “Just do what I do!” she instructed, “Push down your feelings and hide them until they come out at complete strangers.” She smiled brightly at her best friend and her parents, as though this was the best advice possible. “Hey you!” she shouted, an angry tint to her voice as she turned to go deliver a sandwich to a customer.
Theresa and Jerry both winced, realizing that maybe Harper needed some guidance too. Locking eyes, they agreed they could only handle one crisis at a time- especially when they were at such a loss on what to do on both fronts.
Jerry tried to think quickly, seeing the way Alex leaned towards the lair again. His eyes settled back to the task he was about to complete before his wife managed to lure Alex out of the safety of the Lair, and a light bulb came on. Maybe he could get her to laugh!
“I think I know how to cheer you up!” he smiled brightly at his daughter, “See that guy over there?” He pointed discretely to the person sitting by themselves. “Well, he ordered a cola, BUT I’m going to serve him prune juice!” He wasted no time in pouring the juice and gestured at her, “Come on! Watch!” With quick steps he delivered the cup to the unsuspecting patron, “One cola.” he tried to smile pleasantly before returning to his wife and daughter. For a moment he was sure the only thing holding Alex to the spot by the counter was his wife’s hands on her arms, wrapped around her back like a warm protective cage.
When the man took a sip, expecting the taste of cola he made an immediate sour face, spitting it out in an exaggerated spit-take that usually would make Alex holler. He gave them a disgusted look, threw up his hands as he watched the father nudge his sad looking daughter. “Was that great or what?” he looked back and forth expectantly. The man threw down his napkin before storming out with a scowl. “OH, and now I’m losing a customer!” Jerry exclaimed, “You love it when I lose customers! There he goes!” he was sure Alex would have a smile at the very least when he turned back but was instead greeted by the sight of his daughter still looking very melancholy.
In an uncharacteristic display of sympathy she spoke in a watery voice, “Oh, that poor man!” she frowned at her dad, “What’d he ever do to you dad?” Her lip wobbled and Jerry’s eyes widened, “Oh.” he blinked, “Oh honey.” he reached out to wipe her cheek, despite there not being any visible tear tracks. “Your heart must really be broken.” his shoulders slumped slightly at the realization at how deeply Alex cared about this breakup. His little girl had been through breakups before, but he’d never seen her this stuck and unable to bounce right back to her sneaky, mischievous, joyful self. His own eyes watered as he hugged her, feeling Theresa join in a group hug.
“Awe, it’s an Alex-sandwich” Harper seemed like she might cry too and without a moment’s hesitation the Russo parents both held out an arm to allow her to join them which she rushed into. With both girls secure in a hug, Jerry and Theresa agreed with locked eyes, both of their girls needed more help to heal, they just needed to sit down and figure out what it would look like.
“Alex.” The British voice was almost a whimper as he called her name upon entrance to the sub station. Mason’s eyes quickly scanned the room to find the Russo parents in a group hug with Harper and someone else in the middle. Instincts told him this was his beloved girlfriend Alex. “Alex.” he repeated, making it halfway into the substation before a hand stopped him.
“Mason.” his eyes were steely as he greeted the other boy. “I don’t think Alex wants to see you right now.” He crossed his arms and smirked, almost triumphantly, “And not to gloat, but I know Juliet doesn’t.” Mason looked at Justin disbelievingly, how could he possibly think that he was here to look for Juliet? Sure, Juliet had once been his girlfriend, eons ago, but Alex was his only thought now. Hadn’t he already explained that? Hadn’t she? Alex held his heart in her hands, and he was sure she would forevermore. He shook his head at the jealous older brother and looked over his shoulder, trying to catch a glimpse of his heart.
“Alex.” he looked at her pleadingly, his own heart cracking to see the way she clutched the turquoise blanket around her shoulders with a tight knuckled grip, the way her shoulders caved and she was hunched in on herself, the redness rimming her eyes and the puffiness that were telltale signs of tears. “I came to fix things.” he spoke directly to her, keeping his eyes on hers, locked.
It was Harper who stepped right back in the middle, between Justin and Alex, effectively cutting her from view again. “Make him write down what he wants to say to her.” she narrowed her eyes at Mason, “That accent gives him a totally unfair advantage.” Her arms were outstretched, as if that would keep Alex behind her.
“Alex, I didn’t mean what I said earlier.” he pleaded, hoping she was listening even through her best friend’s back. “I was in shock from seeing Juliet, but I want to be with you.” he promised
“Really?” her voice was tiny as she peered over Harper’s shoulder.
“Yes.” he tried to take another step, but Justin held up his hand again, putting pressure on Mason’s shoulder. It wasn’t enough to actually stop the werewolf, but out of desperate need to convince Alex that not only did he love and want her, but that he was still a safe choice to be around, he didn’t throw off the hand and force himself forward. The wizards strength would be no match, and the last thing he needed right now was to hurt her older brother and start a fight.
Alex sidestepped her best friend and took a step closer to Mason, looking right into his eyes. Her lips pursed for a moment as she found the words she wanted, “Look, Mason…” she grit her teeth against the pain the words were causing her. “I’ve been in shock before too.” Her fingers tightened their hold on the blanket, “Like when I accidentally made my brother disappear.” she gestured, “Or when I accidentally made my parents not know who I was.” Jerry and Theresea shared a confused look, filing this information away for later, “Or when I accidentally got trapped in a horror film.” she paused, “Or when I accidentally-”
She was cut off by her mother, Theresea gently grabbed her arms again, “Honey, we know. You’ve messed up a lot.” she rubbed her thumbs encouragingly on her skin, realizing that Alex was stalling from heartache.
“Yeah.” she nodded, biting her lip, “I have messed up a lot.” she admitted before turning back and forcing herself to look at Mason, whose heartbroken expression tore at Alex’s already shattered heart and the loose grip she had on the decision she was making. “And still, I’ve never accidentally told someone I loved them when I didn’t.”
He reached out, managing to brush his fingers on her cheek, “Alex, I know it’s hard to believe, but if you just let me explain I know you’ll understand- I lo-”
“No.” she turned her gaze, effectively removing his soft touch from her cheek. “That’s the problem.” she shook her head and stepped backwards, “I don’t understand. I don’t believe you.” Without another word Alex fished her want out of her book and in a flash was gone, leaving everyone else standing around in the substation.
“It’s time for you to go, Mason.” Jerry leveled him with a look.
“Yes sir.” he bowed his head in acceptance and they watched his own breakdown happen in front of their eyes. “I’ll be on my way then, and I’ll regret my mistake for the rest of my life.” he voice was dejected and his shoulders slumped in despair. The rejection weighed heavily on him as he turned and left the substation, fighting his loyal heart’s begging to go find her instead.
Two hearts thoroughly broken by an accidental misunderstanding.
Max never prided himself on being the smartest or the funniest or the most balanced sibling, but he did pride himself on his heart, how much he cared. Seeing the way Alex had self destructed and the way Mason crumbled, he knew he had to do something, after all, they were both in such pain but didn’t seem to be fixing it.
Frowning he made his way down Waverly Place, eyes scanning the street, wondering if he’d be able to even find Mason or not. He wasn’t an expert or anything, but something about this all seemed off to him and since he’d already seen Alex’s side maybe he could get something from Mason. “Hey yo Mason, what’s up? Where are you going? He put on an easy smile as he approaching the werewolf.
He almost faltered when he was met with a sad look, like a puppy. “Listen Max, it’s probably not a good idea that we hang out anymore.” he lowered his head, but tried to keep his eye contact. “I’m missing your sister a lot and when I see you, I think of her.” even now, his thoughts refused to leave Alex, what was she doing right now? She looked so… sad. Was she still curled up with that turquoise blanket?
“Wait, hold on a minute.” Max shook his head, “I’m deciding if I should be offended or not.” he scrunched his nose. Should he? Normally, he might be, but Mason was Alex’s boyfriend before he was ever Max’s friend. “No, I’m good.” he decided, he couldn’t falt the werewolf for his feelings. Speaking of feelings, he decided to try and get the information he came for. “Mason, you can't just give up like that man.” He placed a hand on Mason’s shoulder, his touch far more friendly that Justin’s had been. “I mean, you and Alex should be together. We’ve all see the way you two are. You bring out the best in her and anyone who looks can see that you love her. That’s all I could ever want as her brother.” he gave a little shrug, “Annnd I think you should make it happen by Werewolf Thanksgiving.”
Mason was confused by the statement, “Werewolf Thanksgiving?”
“Yeah…” Max trailed off and brushed a hand through his curls, “I kinda told all my wizard friends I was going to your house because you guys eat pilgrims.” he admitted. His priority was Alex, obviously, but could you blame him for having ulterior motives? Werewolf Thanksgiving sounded awesome, and Max didn’t want to miss it.
“I don’t know if Alex will ever understand this, but werewolves are very loyal.” Mason lamented, “The problem is that we’re also insanely impulsive.” he squeezed his eyes shut and pinched the bridge of his nose, frustrated at his own genetic traits. “It’s what drove me to approach her in art class even when I thought she was a mortal. It’s what made me kiss her in the rain. It’s what made me fall before I’d even said two words to her.” he sighed, “It’s also what made me say things I didn’t mean after seeing Juliet after all these years.” His nose twitched, And now that you mention it, I’m craving pilgrims.” he gave a shocked look to Max who shrugged with a relaxed smile.
His smile slipped off his face and he became more thoughtful as he processed what Mason had just revealed about werewolf nature. “Well, I think you should go explain that to Alex.” He looked back up and continued, “Not the pilgrim part, cause that’s gonna feel like history to her and she's gonna tune you out.” Mason nodded as he listened, knowing Max was right. “But like, the impulsive thing? That’s definitely worth mentioning.”
For a moment Mason felt hope, which can be a dangerous thing to an impuslive werewolf, but he crushed it and looked back up to the Russo patio longingly, remembering their date when they tossed water balloons from the balcony onto unsuspecting walkers. “Yeah, but I haven’t been able to talk to her at all, let alone alone.” he signed, and stared, lost in the vision, imagining he could see her standing there mischievously grinning down at him.
Max frowned, watching Mason in pain reminded him too much of Alex. He didn’ like it. Not the fact that it was similar, he couldn't care less about that- what bothered him was that his only sister and the werewolf who loved her were both in such immense pain. Fixable pain at that. Something in Max told him that they were meant to be, that someday he was supposed to see his sister walk down the aisle to meet Mason, and he just knew it was true.
“Come on.” he bumped his shoulder to make sure Mason heard him, “I’ll bring you up. It’s my turn for Alex watch after all.” Mason’s stomach felt like a rock as he silently followed the younger boy up the steps, miraculously not seeing any other Russo family members on their way. Max paused, hand on the doorknob “Hold on- wait here.” he told Mason, holding up a finger to stop him, realizing that Harper may not take it well if he brought him inside right now.
Slipping inside he smiled at Harper and she hustled over to him. “She’s watching werewolf movies and I can’t get her to stop.” she fretted and Max nodded solemnly, hoping his plan would work and his family would be fixed. “Got it.” Easily he flopped down on the couch, putting his head on Alex’s lap next to the popcorn bucket she was picking up to throw at the tv. “Ooh yum.” he plucked it free and popped some into his mouth, watching her stare at him dumbly for a moment before putting her hands back down empty as planned. One hand fisted her blanket and the other settled onto Max’s chest by his heart, a sight that Harper pouted at, seeing the siblings be so sweet together was rare, but not as rare as seeing Justing and Alex getting along easily. Well, it had been better since Justin had fallen for Juliet and Alex for Mason, but she couldn’t think about that right now. Harper shook off her worry, leaving Alex in Max’s hopefully capable hands as she did her homework.
After a moment he looked up from his spot, seeing Alex watching him instead of the movie. “So.” he licked his lips, “I actually have someone who desperately wants to talk to you and I think you should hear him out.” he put a hand atop Alex’s. “I know it’s hard to believe, but he really does love you and I know that the two of you are meant to be together.” he bit his lip seeing his sister hide the hope in her eyes. “I know it’s hard to trust him, but can you at least trust me?” he asked softly, squeezing her hand.
Wordlessly, she nodded and squeezed his hand back. “Ok.” her voice was hoarse and Max decided he didn’t quite want to get up from his spot yet, it would be a great vantage point to comfort her and she also couldn’t run away. “Come in.” he called, quiet enough to not draw attention from upstairs.
Mason peered inside slowly, his eyes searching for Alex. Once he found her he used long strides to approach and dropped to his knees in front of her on the couch. His head dropped down, reminding Max once again of a scolded puppy. Mason’s forehead rested on her knees and he gently held one calf in his left hand while his right hand ever so gently touched the hand that was wrapped so tightly around her blanket. “Please Alex, I’m over Juliet. I’ve been over Julietfor years, millenia even. You have to believe me, please.” His thumb rubbed her skin soothingly, and she fought to ignore the sensation.
“Well, I don’t.” she repeated, Just because she didn’t want you, Mason, I’m your second choice?” She stared down at him, clutching her hands tighter to avoid running her fingers through his hair like they longed to do. “I’m not going to be a second choice or a third choice.”
“I can prove it please.” he begged and Max butted into the conversation “Tell her what you told me- you know, about loyalty and stuff?” he reminded me.
“What do you know about werewolves, Alex?” Mason asked, finally looking up through wet eyelashes at the angel sitting quietly.
“Not a lot.” she admitted. “I knew that when werewolves kiss someone they turn into a werewolf.” she remembers when her brother dated that one werewolf girl. “But you told me that only happens with mutts and that you’re a purebred.” She wracked her brain, trying to come up with more information, but feeling lacking. The Magic dimension, more specifically the wizarding world, rarely shared information about beings they deemed dangerous, beyond the fact that they were deemed dangerous.
She looked down with a small thoughtful frown and a line between her eyebrows. Mason wanted to reach up and gently press it out of her skin, he didn’t want her worrying over it too much. “Werewolves are very loyal, protective, and impulsive.” he tightened his grip on her hand, trying to gain a soft hold of her hand in his- his fingers starting to find their way inside of her grip on the blanket that was starting to loosen. “Loyalty is hard to break, nearly impossible. That’s what makes dating and love so hard for us. Once we’ve decided on someone, they’re one of our people, our pack, for life if our loyalty bond is strong enough.” he continues, “We’re very impulsive creatures Alex. The magic world says I’m dangerous, especially to mortals.” he reminds her. “I was impulsive when I moved here. I fell for you before we even exchanged two words. I approached you because I couldn't stop myself. And it was the impulsive nature combined with the loyalty I had for Juliet way back when we dated that caused me to say something I no longer mean. I only care for Juliet as a sister now, and have ever since we parted. It’s you that’s in my heart, you that consumes my soul and commands my every thought, my every action. You’re my mate Alex.” Tears pricked his eyes as he finally told her the truth at the very core of his love for her.
“Listen to me Alex, I can prove it- I can.” He begged, his fingers slipping further into her hand to hold it completely now that she relinquished the blanket.
“How? How could you possibly prove that?” she asked hesitantly.
“All we have to do is go back to Translyvania and find the true love necklace.” he squeezes her hand gently, “If you put it on me and it glows, then you’ll know how I truly feel about you.” Lifting their conjoined hands he unfurled her hand and pressed his cheek into it, relishing the warmth of her touch.
“No-” she immediately shook her head, “I’m never going back there. You can go get it.” she pulled back, “No!” he pressed his cheek into her hand again looking up at her like a lost puppy. “You have to go with me.” he begged, “Because that’s where it all went bad and that’s where I’m gonna make it all go good.” His eyes shone with tears, determination, and dare Alex hope, love.
“I still don’t believe you - I can’t let myself believe you- but I have to know the truth.” she bit her lip. “Okay. I’ll go.” Without a second to waste, Mason stood and scooped her into his arms in a single motion. “I’ve got you.” he strode confidently towards the still open door, not wanting her to change her mind. As a werewolf Mason was fast, faster still when he shifted, even partially to a wolf state. She curled up into his chest, her face in his neck and arms wrapped tightly as he carried her, running swiftly. His clawed hands held her tightly, the sharp nails grazing her skin and his fur tickling her face, but she had never minded the sensations, they were some of what made Mason Mason after all.
He only stopped running when they were in Transylvania. Although he knew he should put her down to look, he kept her carefully wrapped in his embrace, protectively and selfishly wanting to hold her for longer. She peered around through her lashes as he searched the surrounding rubble for the red heart necklace. It was her own stubbornness that she didn’t demand to be let down to help look- he could handle it himself since he was so determined to prove himself to her. Suddenly she froze, seeing a chain glinting from where it dangled off the edge of a tall pillar. “Mason.” she whispered into his ear, and he froze, hearing her speak for the first time since they arrived. “It’s up there.” she pointed and he turned so he could follow her sight and finger.
He lamented the need to set her down and found a stone close to the pillar where she could be comfortable. “I’m going to get it down.” he promised, kissing her fingers, “And then you’ll see that I mean it when I tell you I love only you.” Turning he used the sharp claws to keep his hold on the pillar as he climbed, the nails leaving deep gouges that should have scared her, knowing that only a minute ago they were touching her skin. She shivered in the chilly air, watching as he focussed only on reaching the necklace.
Once he had it in his grasp he let go of the pillar and pushed himself away from in with a large leap. The ground cracked under his feet when he landed on the slab of stone at the base. Breathing hard he staggered over to her, relief that she would know his heart in but a moment. Falling to his knees he presented it to her. “I love you, please believe me.”
Gingerly she took it from him, her fingers brushing his. She stared at it in her hands for a moment, uncertainty flooding. What if it didn’t glow like he claimed it would? Grinding her teeth to steel herself she lifted it and slipped it over his head. It settled over his heart and a heavy red glow filled the space between them, almost brighter and stronger than when he had first put it on her. Her eyes flit back up to meet his, tears now falling for a very different reason than before. “You love me?” she whispered, and he whispered back without hesitation, “I do, I love you more than I can possibly describe.”
Leaning in her eyes slipped closed and she pressed a kiss to his lips. His fur tickled as she brushed her tears away, cupping her cheeks and returned the kiss, more deeply and fervently than the one she initiated. Breaking for a moment to breathe, he reached for the chain, “This belongs to you.” he murmured, foreheads pressed together he switched it over to her. His heart soared when the necklace continued to glow, proving her love for him hadn’t disappeared.
“I love you.” he told her again.
“I believe you.” she whispered back.

Chapter Text
The week the Finkles had come to visit had started off fun, but quickly turned sour. Alex felt so ashamed that she hadn’t even realized the suffering her best friend had to go through with her family this whole time. She always thought Harper had total freedom to do whatever she wanted, but that was far from the truth..
She had discovered the poorly kept secret that Harper often glossed over: her parents had essentially abandoned her to live by herself when she no longer fit into their picture perfect show act. She was too old, was not cute enough, was too much or too little, and they only came back because they decided they needed her to help the act again. Alex had tried stepping into the role, which helped her figure it all out. The Finkles may have seemed like free spirits, happy and sparkly, but really that was just all part of the show.
It struck her that the only childhood experiences Harper had ever gotten were the ones Alex had brought her to when they became friends in elementary school. That was the turning point in Harper’s life where she was suddenly always with Alex, and Alex hadn’t ever thought to ask questions about it all. Harper was so flamboyant that it never crossed her mind she might be unhappy. She was sure there must be something she can do about it all.
She frowned as she studied the spell book sitting open on her lap, the soft moonlight coming in through her window giving her enough light that she wasn’t going to wake Harper. The poor girl was curled up next to her as Alex decided they needed a sleepover to get past the awful week that Harper had just endured because of the Finkles. It was now the third day of the continuous sleepover, and Harper was still feeling down. Oh, she put up a smiling front, but Alex now knew there was a lot of acting going on, she was watching for the fakeness in the smile when it didn’t reach her eyes and the twitch of her fingers as she tried to keep herself together.
She bit her thumbnail as she glanced over at her sleeping friend before turning her eyes back to the spell she had found. Mulling it over she made her decision. This spell claimed it would make the person find happiness, and that is what Harper genuinely needed. She hesitated as she approached her vanity, where she had stowed her wand earlier in the evening, glancing out the window to the full moon. Would this really help Harper or would it backfire like her ideas usually seemed to?
As Alex took in the sight of the full moon her thoughts turned to her boyfriend Mason and she smiled softly. He was with his family this week on a trip. Thankfully it was spring break, so he wouldn’t have to try and explain away his family trip.. Tonight they'd be running wild with the moon so full. If it weren’t for that, she knew he might have snuck up to the balcony for a late night visit. Her smile vanished and she turned and studied the wand in her fingertips. She was so happy with Mason, and dare she admit her crazy family too? What kind of happiness would Harper find with this spell? It said she would find it, so did that mean she would find someone the way Alex found Mason? Either way, it said she would find happiness somehow. Resolved, Alex returned to her book to reread the spell.
“When all is said and done, happiness is second to none. Now, let’s not be sappy, let Harper find what she needs to be happy!” The spell lit up the room momentarily, and Alex let out a breath before settling back into her side of the bed, hoping that this would work the way she was intending it to. For once, one of her hairbrained schemes wasn’t centered around herself.
It was early when daylight began to slowly filter its way into Alex’s room through the chiffon curtains. She turned over with a hum and blearily blinked, rubbing her eyes. Normally she hated getting up early, but since Harper was staying in her room to sleepover, they were naturally getting up earlier since Harper was an early riser.
A tiny tired groan drew her attention, and she blinked in surprise, rubbing her eyes as she sat up. Instead of Harper next to her there was a small child that resembled kindergarten Harper. “Oh no.” she breathed out, her spell had backfired somehow. Scrambling, she picked up the spellbook again and read the spell to herself. She did it right, but what had happened to Harper? She was about to turn and go panic to her family, but she paused, making sure the bookmark was in the right spot and set the book on the edge of the bed so she could grab it on the way out before she approached Harper’s side of the bed. Tentatively she reached out and gently brushed Harpers choppy bangs out of her eyes and offered a smile to the little Harper. “Goodmorning Harper.” She found herself cooing at her best friend when she blearily blinked up at her.
The child Harper stared in confusion. The beautiful lady was unfamiliar to her, and so was the fuzzy pink bedroom she was in. As she continued to stare, the woman's smile seemed to falter slightly, and her eyebrows bunched slightly in a worried way. Sleepily Harper wondered what happened last night to wake up with a stranger. Had someone called CPS? Or had they finally dropped her off and left for Romania like they wanted? Her parents always said that naughty children were taken away, and as far back as she could remember they’d been hinting at how troublesome she was. Had they finally come to take her away? Was she really that bad of a girl? Her little hands gripped the purple comforter tightly and she watched the woman sit down, a small frown tugging at her lips while she softly touched Harper’s forehead. “No fever.” she murmured. “Are you feeling OK Harper?” she asked gently, and her stomach answered in response with a loud growl and she shrank smaller even though the woman smiled warmly. “Hungry? Let’s go get some breakfast.” she offered her hand and Harper hurried to put her own hand in hers, lest she make her mad by refusing.
On their way to the door, Alex made sure to grab the spellbook and tucked it safely under her arm, pulling Harper along towards the stairs. The smell of bacon and eggs made Harper’s mouth water and she wondered who it was for and if they had any extra. Cold cereal was all she could make herself.
“Um, dad?” she said softly as she walked down the spiral staircase, “I need some help.” she admitted. He turned from his place at the table, surprised that Alex was openly saying she needed help instead of acting like she had everything under control. Theresa looked over as she sat down some breakfast at the table for them both parents gasped to see Alex leading a smaller Harper down the staircase.
“Where did- what did- Alex!” Her dad exclaimed, looking for an explanation.
“It’s Harper.” she said softly again, “Here’s the spellbook, I bookmarked the page.” She shifted the book from under her arm so she could hand it over to her dad.
When he took the book she ushered the tiny girl to the table, sitting her down in her usual spot that had been reserved for Harper since childhood. The book sat open in his hands while he and Theresa stared at Alex and Harper. “Do you want some eggs? She asked in a gentle tone, “Bacon?” The little harper looked at her nervously, but slowly nodded, looking as if she wasn’t sure she really could have it. Wide-eyed she watched Alex dish some food onto a plate for her and shakily accepted the fork offered. Alex reached over and snatched up a piece of bacon for herself, taking a bite she chewed on the crunchy food, tussling Harper’s hair before turning back to her dad.
Leaning close she murmured to him, “I was trying to find a way to help Harper find happiness, and when I woke up this morning, Harper was a child. I even double checked the spell, I did everything right but I don’t understand what’s happening.”
Finally he looked down at the book, reading the spell to himself and trying to connect this behavior with the Alex they all knew. A mug crashed to the ground which caused Harper to flinch and drop her fork with a small clatter onto her plate. When she looked, Harper was staring down at her hands silently waiting and Alex shot Justin a look, “What was that for?” she tsked at him before turning around to try to calm Harper. “Hey, It’s okay.” she soothed, “It was just a mug Justin accidentally dropped.” she brushed her bangs back again, “Ok?” she smiled, but scrunched her nose when the hair fell right back into Harper’s face. “Hmm, I’ll be right back.” she assured the little girl before she turned and rushed back up the stairs to grab some things from her vanity.
“That- that is Alex right?” Justin stammered, “And she’s taking care of a child right? I’m not dreaming?” Theresa leveled him with a look and pointed down to the mess he had to clean up. She bustled past him and grabbed the milk from the fridge, “Yes, it is.” she paused, “I think.” she sighed, but smiled when she brought the jug to the table and poured a small glass for Harper. “Here Honey.” she set it next to the plate within reach and gave her shoulder a gentle squeeze like she used to when they were just kids.
Alex slipped back into the room right as Theresa sat down. Immediately she returned to Harper’s side and tapped her chin, “Can you lift your head for me kiddo?” she smiled and shook the hairbrush in her fingertips, “Let’s do something so your hair doesn’t get stuck in your breakfast, huh?” Harper straightened her head, but still didn’t look, refusing to make eye contact. She bit back a sigh, but stepped behind the chair and gingerly began to brush out Harper’s thick, pin straight hair.
Theresa couldn’t help but stare now as Alex deftly did Harper’s hair- twisting into a cute style with butterfly clips and twin ponytails, a ponytail between her teeth as she worked with intent. For the first time, probably ever, she could see a hint of herself in her only daughter. The picture in front of her brought her back to doing this very thing for both girls before school when they were young. Her eyes stung and she held back proud tears, who knew Alex could be- dare she even think the word- motherly? She watched them fondly, smiling at the pair.
“There we go.” Alex hummed happily, proud of her quick work. “Want to see?” she leaned over and asked, but was met with a slight shake of her head, Harper’s eyes still down, as if she was waiting for the other shoe to drop after Justin broke the mug. “Ok.” she decided not to push it, wondering if this was what Harper was like at home when they were little. She never seemed like it to Alex, but maybe she was just really good at putting up a front in public, even as a Kindergartener.
Alex slipped into her chair next to Harper and looked up at her silent family, “What?” she asked with a mouthful of bacon. Theresa blinked, the ‘spell’ broken, there was her messy daughter. “Don’t chew with food in your mouth.” she admonished with a sigh, but Alex’s eyes had turned towards Justin who was scrutinizing the little Harper. Could that be why she was she was shrunk so small right now? She wasn’t sure but she returned his look with a protective glare. “Justin- I think you have a mess to clean up.” she said icily, pointing to the floor by him. The look she fixed him with reminded him that this little mortal Harper didn’t know magic, and Jerry gave the same deliberate look between him and the shattered mug.
“Do you want a little more?” The way she spoke to Harper was vastly different than the way she had just spoken to Justin and Harper noticed. With a shy nod she began to eat some more small bites and was rewarded with a kind smile when she glanced up.
Seeing the little redhead finally starting to work on her breakfast she turned back to her dad. “So? Any ideas? She can’t stay this way- we need to turn her back.” she spoke softly, but Harper caught a few words. ‘Can’t stay’ and ‘back’ rung in her ears and she couldn’t help but immediately assume it meant this nice lady didn’t want her here either.
She froze before her head shot up, and she looked at the lady who just did her hair so nicely. She felt like she was shaking as she looked at the people at the table in horror. Whens he woke up she had determined that her parents thought she was too naughty and finally sent her away, but what would happen if they didn’t want her either? What exactly happened to bad little girls who nobody wanted? Her lip wobbled and she tried to blink back tears as her breathing sped up. Not knowing where she could even go, she abruptly pushed herself back, away from the concerned brown eyes that had turned back to her. Her chair thudden and she flinched, knowing they wouldn’t be happy with her for knocking over their furniture she turned and sped towards the only place she knew so far in this place - the fuzzy pink room. With quick pattering steps she ran, throwing herself under the bed when she finally arrived, hiding from the call of “Harper!” and footsteps that followed her.
“Harper?” it followed her into the room and she heard the springs creak when she sat on the bed above her. “I’m not going to force you to come out and talk to me.” She promised, “I don’t know what spooked you so much, but I’ll wait right here until you’re ready to talk to me.” She heard the woman settle in to wait on the bed, and debated what she should do. She resolved to stay under there awhile, and as the time ticked by she started to feel less scared and more nervous for how mad she had made the people. Quietly she crawled back out and peeked at the bed, only to find the woman was intently focussed on a drawing she was working on. Curiosity always got the better of her, and Harper snuck onto the bed and leaned over to see. To her surprise it was a picture of her! She had pigtails and butterfly hair clips. It was so pretty Harper couldn’t help but stare.
“Do you like it?” she voice startled her and she looked up nervously, only to see a smile once more. “You can have it if you want.” without waiting, she promptly folded and tore the page out of the notebook along the perforations, and slid it into Harper’s lap
“So,” she spoke again, “I’ve been thinking, maybe you thought we were going to send you away or something?” she phrased it like a question, “And I want you to know that I would never dream of it. You’re stuck with me.” she promised, offering a pinky to Harper, “If you’ll have me, of course.” Harper blinked back tears again, but this time it was from relief, hoping the words were real, and letting the girl twine their pinkies together to make it a promise.
“How about we go back downstairs?” she urged, “I realized you probably don’t know anyone’s name yet, so we should introduce everyone.” The smile was encouraging, and Harper found herself following the woman again, holding her hand as she tiptoed back down the stairs. When they got back to the main level, she promptly hid behind her, peeking out warily.
“So, Harper,” she looked down at her and then gestured to the people in order. “These are my parents, Jerry and Theresa and my brothers Justin and Max.” The curly haired Max smiled at her goofily, “Hiya Harper!” he cocked his head,”Hey, I know a Harper! That’s so cool! We should introduce big Harper to little Harper!” he seemed enthusiastic, and little Harper couldn’t help but like him, especially when he seemed so much happier than the other boy.
He was met with sighs, and Justin smacked him upside the head. “He made a gesture and muttered something to Max who looked at him like he didn’t make any sense. “Yeah, because that makes so much sense.” he laughed, “Can you believe this guy?” he rolled his eyes and plopped down on the couch.
The rest of the week continued in the same manner, Alex treated Harper carefully but she continued to stay silent, nodding for yes and no answers or hesitantly pointing when she had to make a choice. She snuggled into bed with Alex, listening to a short story each night. It all felt like some kind of dream to the Kindergarten Harper. This wasn’t anything like her parents had told her it would be. It was warm and safe and she liked it here.
Sunday morning, they were sitting down for breakfast when the door opened suddenly and Harper stared wide-eyed as a man walked in uninvited. She looked around to see what they would do to the intruder. To her surprise, Alex immediately leapt to her feet and rushed forward. “Mason!” she squealed, throwing her arms around his shoulders. With ease he winded his arms around her back and swung her in a circle. “Alex.” he cooed, setting her feet back on the ground. “I missed you Brown Eyes.” the way he smiled made Harper feel safe, even if it was directed only at Alex. Cupping her face he kissed her repeatedly, and she giggled, “I missed you too.” Giving one last kiss he whispered, “I love you.” and Harper decided right then that she liked him too. Quietly she snuck up next to them, holding on to Alex’s leg, which made her startle in surprise and Mason blinked down at her in confusion. “Who’s this little Lady?” he glanced between Alex and Harper before crouching down, “Hi.” he smiled toothily, “I’m Mason.” he offered his hand, “What’s your name?” She studied him intensely and he glanced back up to his girlfriend who mouthed, “Harper.” with an embarrassed look on her face, a telltale sign that she had messed something up.
“You love my Mommy?” she narrowed her eyes at him, “Does that make you my Daddy?”. It was the first time anyone had heard her speak all week and Alex stared down at her with her jaw dropped. Blinking rapidly she found herself melting, “awwweeee.” she cooed and Mason felt his own heart swell at the insinuation. “Yes.” he decided after a moment, “Yes it does.” his smile returned and he tapped her nose on the last word, “Easily scooping her into his arms as he stood up. “Well, what’s on the agenda for today Love?” he asked Alex, feeling oddly at ease with the strange situation.
“Well, we were going to go to the park after breakfast and we’ve called Professor Crumbs to come visit us this evening to help us figure out, um, that mishap.” she answered, choosing her words wisely and reaching up to brush Harper’s bangs out of her eyes before doing the same to him.
“I want to play on the swings.” Harper whispered, “Can I mommy?” she repeated the word tentatively, testing to see if it really was ok to call her that. Alex beamed at her, “Of course Honey, but you have to finish your breakfast first.” she nodded and Harper wiggled, ready to finish quickly. Instead of setting her down, Mason carried her back over to the table and set her back in her chair before stealing Alex’s. She rolled her eyes when he pulled her onto his lap since there wasn’t an extra open chair. “We can share, right, Love.” he teased her.
Alex absent-mindedly ran her fingers through his hair with one hand and reached out to grab some bacon with the other. She offered it to him with a teasing smile, and he smiled sweetly at her before letting her feed him.
It didn’t take long for breakfast to finish, and Alex pulled her wand out of her boot. After a couple days of hiding it, Alex decided it really shouldn’t matter since big Harper knew and for the foreseeable future was going to be stuck as a child. It would only make things easier if she knew.
“Clean it up, wash it, scrub it down, oh no.” With a quick chant and wave of her wand, the breakfast mess was cleaned in a flash. Although Theresa rolled her eyes at her daughter’s use of magic for the chore, she still felt proud to see her making sure the mess was clean before their trip to the park. It was more than she might have done in the past. It would seem her daughter was really starting to grow up, having to take care of her best friend. Harper watched in amazement while the dishes floated and scrubbed and settled back in their places.
“Park now?” she hopped up with a toothy grin that was mirrored by Mason. “Right you are pup.” He reached over and tickled her side, making her giggle. “Daddy!” she squealed and his grin seemed to widen. Standing up he tickled her some more before swinging her up into his arms again. “Let’s go!”
Harper already seemed much more enthusiastic and outgoing, running and playing with the other kids at the park easily. It made Alex smile and she leaned into Mason, who had an arm around her shoulders as they watched her from their spot on the bench, waiting for her to need them. “I love you.” she whispered to him and he kissed her temple, whispering right back, “I love you too Brown Eyes.”
“I cast a spell.” she admitted, “It was supposed to help Harper with finding happiness, but somehow it turned her into a kid.” She bit her lip, it was hard admitting her mistake twice, but easier since it was to Mason.
His nose twitched in thought. “Her home life was pretty rough, wasn’t it? Maybe she was searching for the happiness of a family? That could explain why she’s little again.”
“You think so?” she played with his fingers.
“I mean, she did call you mommy.” he reminded her, to which Alex responded, “And she called you daddy.” turning her head they made eye contact.
“Any child of yours is a child of mine.” he assured her. “Even if it is your friend who you accidentally turned into a child.” he teased, and she smacked his arm with a fake pout. He leaned in, “I really do mean that though.” he whispered into her ear. “I’ll do anything to make my mate happy.” he kissed her cheek again and Alex blushed at his words. “Your mate?” she asked, her heart beating wildly.
“Yeah.” He nuzzled her cheek.”My mate.” he repeated, “And until she’s herself again, that’s our pup. Ours.”
With an elated smile she repeated him, “Ours.” She quite liked the sound of it.
“Harper!” she called out, glancing at Mason’s wristwatch that was on the hand she was playing with. “Time to eat!” With a squeal, Harper went down the slide one last time before running full speed over to them. “Yay! Lunch time!” she cheered and Alex chuckled. “ The pseudo family walked on the grass and Mason plopped down, on the ground, laying back with his hands behind his head. Glancing around, Alex checked for watching eyes. When she saw it was clear she pulled her wand. “Satisfy my empty belly, make me a picnic lunch complete with peanut butter and jelly!” A red and white checkered picnic blanket appeared beneath Mason with a wicker basket sitting nicely next to him.
“Woah!” Harper exclaimed, plopping down next to it and peeking inside to find the peanut butter and jelly sandwiches like Alex had said. The trio munched and relaxed on the blanket for awhile, Harper actually fell asleep curled up between her pseudo parents.
When it was time to go, he once again scooped her up into his arms as Alex reversed her spell, effectively cleaning up the picnic mess. Lazily they walked, taking the long route back to the apartment. Harper was still napping so they dropped her off in Alex’s bedroom, where the pair decided they too deserved a nap and they sandwiched the sleeping Harper between them.
A couple hours later, Alex snuck downstairs to help get some supper ready. Theresa had raised an eyebrow, but willingly worked alongside her daughter to prepare the pasta she had asked to make earlier. She was quite surprised that she could sit back through most of the work, sipping a glass of wine while Alex worked diligently to make sure she didn’t burn anything. It was quick and easy, so once it was set on the table she quickly hopped back up the stairs and peeked her head into her room to see Mason and Harper both snoring softly. “Mason, Honey.” he stirred at her voice, “Yes dear?” she smiled at his sleepy voice. “Get the pup up. It’s time for dinner and you both need to wash your hands.”
If he wasn’t awake before, he sure was now, and beamed at Alex, pleased she had also called Harper their pup. As though it was practiced, he woke up Harper and they met the rest of the Russo clan downstairs with clean hands. Two extra chairs had been magicked up earlier to match the rest so they would have space for him and their guest to sit.
In the middle of eating, Professor Crumbs suddenly flashed into the apartment with more smoke than was customary, causing the family to cough and wave their hands to dispel the smoke. “Professor!” Justin greeting, fighting back another cough, “Good to see you!”
“Justin.” the Professor smiled and nodded at him. “So, I looked into the spell you sent me.” he said as he took a seat at the table, immediately dishing up some spaghetti to the empty plate. With a side eye he examined Harper before dropping a bombshell on them, looking right into Alex’s eyes as he spoke
“And I’m sorry to say all of the sources I’ve found say that the effects of this spell are permanent.”

Chapter Text
Mason couldn’t help but smile as Alex guided his hand and with a swing, made him throw the water balloon at an unsuspecting pedestrian below. It met its mark with a splash and immediately they ducked back when the guy yelled out in angry surprise.
He stared at her as she giggled, still holding her hand on top of his like she didn’t realize she was doing it. “Wasn’t that so funny?” Sure, dropping water balloons on people was a bit rude, but he would happily do it again if it meant hearing more of her cute laughter. It was water anyway, harmless in the end.
She met his eyes and her giggles slowed to a stop. Cutely she bit her lip and looked away with an embarrassed blush. Without thinking he used the contact to twist and capture her hand securely in his to tug her closer. With his free hand, Mason brushed her hair from her face, his fingers trailing gently on her cheek.
His smile was soft as he looked at the mortal girl who had entranced him. He knew it was wrong according to the magical dimension, he was dangerous to her, but he couldn’t help himself. It was the werewolf's trait of impulsivity. He’d already fallen for her before he had a chance to speak a single word to her and from there it was over for him, nothing would stop him from getting close to this beautiful, headstrong girl.
“Aren’t you going to grab another balloon?” she deflected, glancing to the bucket next to them. She was cute when she was nervous. “What happens if I do this instead?” he tugged and with no resistance, brought her closer. Letting go of her hand he rested his hand instead on her waist and reached up to hold her chin between his thumb and forefinger. Her eyes fluttered closed in anticipation and he took that as his cue to lean in closer, brushing their noses gently before closing his own eyes to press a kiss to her glossy lips.
When they parted from their first kiss, he licked his lips and took in her dazed expression. Her fingers played with the button on his shirt and she bit her lip as she looked up through her lashes as she looked for her words. “Well, I think what happens is another one.” she teased, lifting her chin herself.
“What the lady wants, she gets.” he chuckled before obliging the teasing request. Breaking the rules never felt so good before, and he knew he would continue to break the Magical dimensions rules for as long as she let him.
Chapter 7: Find Me Again
Summary:
“When the time comes, when it happens, promise me one thing?”
“Anything.”
“Promise you’ll try and find me again.”
Chapter Text
Mason rolled over in his bed, running a hand threw his hair. He was restless, and it was thanks to the dream he had just awoken from. It was a recurring dream, a memory long ago but not forgotten. A moment in time that had left him heartbroken, and he was sure he’d never recover until his promise was fulfilled.
“When the time comes, when it happens, promise me one thing?” Her teary eyes matched his own and he blinked back the tears, wanting to see her clearly if this would be the last time.
“Anything.” He would never hesitate to promise her anything she desired.
“Promise you’ll try and find me again.” She had begged, her tears running twin trails down her cheeks. She gave a hiccuping laugh through the tears when he nodded firmly, holding him tight to press one more kiss to his lips before soberly stepping away.
They were from two different worlds, and yet they were destined to be apart no matter how much she insisted they would see each other again someday. He wanted to trust her instincts, but it was harder and harder as the years passed without her.
The alarm clock beeped harshly next to him, a stark contrast from his dream and a reminder that he would need to get up and go soon. He couldn't be late for his first day after all. His pack had just moved to New York, and it was time for him to re-attend high school.
The dream echoed in his mind as he went about his first day- they were always the same. Tours around the school, introductions to random people, being filled in on what they were working on or what he missed. It never mattered much to him. His day was bleak and gray, right up until the moment he walked into the art room. It was often the only room he actively sought out in his ventures into high school. He enjoyed making art, something about it had always brought him a certain level of comfort- probably because it was her pastime too.
He breathed in deeply, the smell of paint a welcome change to the cologne and body spray scented high school halls. The sunlight felt warmer, brighter here, and he let himself smile as he took in the small room. Mr.Laritate assigned him a spot to work, and he settled in to the class. Glancing towards the light filtering in through the windows he caught sight of a girl sitting in the perfect spot for natural light, not did it frame her so prettily it also gave her wonderful work lighting.
It framed her like a halo and he had to do a double take over the resemblance. The closer he looked through the golden halo of light, the more recognized her. She bit her lip while she worked, tilted her head and even smiled brightly- clearly enjoying what she was doing. It was all he could do not to just openly stare - he did after all have an assignment to complete and he found himself mixing pieces of her into the painting.
Finally, other students were filtering out and his heart leapt into his throat as he approached her, smoothing his shirt and taking his chance. “Sorry.” he held up a paintbrush between his fingertips, “I think you dropped this.” He smiled despite the nervousness.
“Hm?” she turned, “No that’s not mine.” she said immediately but paused when she finally looked at his face. Was she as mesmerized as he was?
“I know.” he admitted, “I just needed a reason to come and talk to you.”
“Oh.” she blushed and averted her eyes, shyly accepting the paintbrush, their fingertips brushing. She bit her lip cutely, “I’m Alex.” she brushed her hair behind her ear, gingerly holding on to the paintbrush.
“Mason.” he responded, breathless. It really was her. He’d been waiting so long for her and now she was finally standing in front of him. Her heart beating and cheeks flushed with pink.
She seemed to study him, a comfortable quiet between them. “Have we ever met before?” she finally asked, “I feel like I know you from somewhere.” Her eyes had a sparkle in them, and he wondered if she knew.
He stepped closer out of habit. “I understand,” he told her. “Maybe in a dream.” he hinted, “A dream or a past life.”
For some reason, this made her smile grow. “Greybeck.” she said his last name. “Your name is Mason Greybeck and mine is Alexandra Russo.” She watched him closely, and she must have found what she was looking for because she leaned closer this time, so close he couldn’t stop himself from letting a hand catch her waist and brush along the hair that framed her face. “We belong together. I’ve kept you waiting a long time. Haven’t I?” she looked apologetic.
“You have.” he brushed his nose on hers, cupping her cheek softly. “I’ve learned to be patient.” She scoffed at him, mirth in her eyes “Werewolves don’t do patience.” she teased.
“True.” he smiled, “But for you? I’d do anything.” Their lips brushed and she smiled into his touch.
“I know. You found me, after all.”
“I did.” he sighed happily. She would always be worth the wait but now that he held her in his arms once more, he never wanted to let her slip through his fingers ever again.

It had been many years and many moves, and still Juliet Van Heusan couldn’t move on, couldn't move past the love of her immortal life. Not for the first time, she wanted to curse her parents for allowing her to have a soul when she was born. She was 2,193 years old now, and damn her heart, her very soul, still hurt at the loss. Her parents had forced her to try a blind date here and there, but it never went well; not when her love already belonged to another. She couldn’t understand why they didn’t understand her mourning would know no end, her lover was dead and gone and there was no coming back from that for a vampire’s heart. The only chance she really stood was if through magic he was given back to her, but she knew how unlikely that was, especially when it had been nearly 2 thousand years already.
She was hollow, following along what was expected of her, but never more. Every few years, she attended school again. Sometimes it would be high school, sometimes it would be college- anything that might give the Van Heusans a concrete link to stay in one place a little longer. This time they had come back to New York. It had truly been ages since she’d been here, and it had all changed so much and yet so little at the same time somehow. She forced a friendly smile, wiping tables, taking orders, and delivering food to customers. Her parents frequently would open a little sandwich shop they liked to call, “The Late Night Bite” that would serve as a great cover for obtaining the sustenance they needed as vampires.
A boy with deep black hair was standing over by the large menu board, and she found herself staring at his hair, getting lost in her thoughts. Her lover had deep hair just like his and she was easily reminded of him, even after all this time. She was frozen to the spot, the rag in her hand stopped mid-wipe on the countertop of the checkout, the task forgotten. Tears pricked her eyes as she recalled the last moments.
He was laying on the ground, blood seeping from the scratches on his chest, deep and ragged. She could only make him comfortable, his head laying on her lap as she stroked his cheeks gently, trying not to let her tears fall.
Blindly he reached for her, cupping her cheek, his gaze soft and full of love as if this was a normal moment. Juliet leaned her cheek into his touch and one hand rested over his own. “So beautiful.” blood dribbled when he spoke, delirious. A choked sob fought its way out and her tears trailed. Turning she pressed a kiss to his palm before pressing it back into place. “I love you.” his eyes seemed to dim, and breathing became harder and harder.
“Remember your promise?” he asked, a reminder that they both knew one day they would be torn apart by mortality. After all, she would live forever as a vampire and he would only have a mortal lifespan as a wizard unless some kind of magic interfered. She just thought they’d have more time, that he’d be graying and pass through old age instead of… this. He had refused her plea to let her change him, and her broken heart couldn’t understand it. “I remember.” Juliet’s lip quivered as she thought of this promise he had once asked her to make, when the time came.
“Please, promise me.” he begged, “Promise me that you’ll look for me.” His touch was weakening fast, as was his pulse.
“How can you be so sure that you’ll come back to me?” she tried her hardest to keep her voice even, but she knew he could hear the waver in it, “How can you be so sure?”
“I have faith in you, in the magic of our love. It will bring us back together, but please, promise you’ll try and find me again.”
“I promise.” she breathed out, knowing he needed to hear this in order to make this more peaceful, but it still tore her apart to feel his hand go limp in hers, watch his eyes flutter closed without his control, see his chest stop moving.
It had hurt in a way that her parents would never understand, it still hurt. Her lip wobbled as she came out of her memories to realize the boy had turned and approached her- she was a waitress after all. “Excuse me.” his bright smile caught her first as she refused to make eye contact, not willing to look any further lest she make comparisons and be lost to her pain yet again. The soft tenor of his voice made her throat feel thick and she slowly looked up, her heart controlling her rather than her mind. “Mine.” her heart screamed, but when her mouth moved, it was unable to make a sound.
“Yes?” she squeaked, after a moment of silence, her eyes feeling wide as saucers taking in his face. Her heart plummeted when he ordered a sandwich from their menu, and realized he had no connections to her, not now. She didn’t catch the way he looked over his shoulder, repeatedly sneaking glances at her, biting his lip, too busy reeling from the sight of him.
Her eyes were drawn to him as she tried to busy her body, meandering around the small diner at a slower pace that she might usually try to force- her nature had always been cheerful and bubbly, even though she was broken, so it was usual to see her flitting from place to place quickly, a conscious effort to not be using her vampire speed on accident.
When he stood to leave she watched him longingly, wishing she could have tried harder to converse with him.
The next time he came back she was around the corner when he walked in, and visibly saw his face sadden for a moment before she slipped into view. It was like a light bulb turned on, his megawatt smile blinding her. “Hi.” he stumbled over to her, “Um- I- Hi.” he blushed, seeming to lose whatever plan he had when he came in search of her.
“Hi.” she shyly brushed a lock of hair back behind her ear and smiled back, despite knowing he would see her fangs. He seemed to pause for a moment before repeating himself, “Hi.” He ran a hand over his short hair and licked his lips, “I’m Justin.” he tried again, offering her his hand.
“Juliet.” she managed not to croak as she slipped her delicate hand into his, the fit still as perfect as ever.
“Juliet.” he breathed her name, “That’s beautiful- I mean- you’re beautiful.” He fumbled his compliment and she couldn’t stop the giggle.
“You’re cute.” she stepped closer, still holding his hand between them. “I’ve been waiting a long time for you.” She tilts her chin up, and she sees something flash in his eyes, and knows when he realizes she’s a vampire. He stiffens slightly, still leaning in towards her, but now has a wariness in him that makes her smile dim and fall away as he stumbles away from her, uncertainty in his movements. He wanted to stay, but his instincts were telling him she wasn’t safe and to run away.
Juliet follows him to the doorway, staring after him as he quickly speeds away, glancing back at her every few steps. “It’s okay! I can wait.” she calls after “I can wait.” she repeats quieter this time, to herself.
The next few days are painful, staring longingly at the door, wondering how long he might make her wait this time. She was sitting despondent on the bench outside the Late Night Bite, not paying any mind to the quiet street of Waverly Place or any customers coming in and out the door nearby. She sighed, she was so close to fulfilling her promise and fixing her heart. Why did he have to run away? He hadn’t run before, so what changed? In the back of her mind she knew. The Magical Dimension classified her as being a dangerous creature, and if he was mortal he could be afraid of the scary stories they liked to tell.
She played with the charm on her bracelet absently, it was a ring she had attached there so as to never lose it. It was a courtship gift from him, one that she cherished deeply. For a moment she slid it on to a finger, relishing the cool metal against her skin before slipping it back onto the chain, fiddling with the clasp and getting frustrated as it refused to work.
Slender fingers took it from her, “Here, let me.” the accompanying voice spoke. With hopeful wide eyes she looked up immediately to see that the boy, Justin, was kneeling next to the bench. She watched, mesmerized as his fingers worked on the tiny clasp, fixing it with ease.
“Thank you.” she looked at him through her lashes and saw he seemed more relaxed than before.
“I’m sorry for running out on you.” he rubbed the back of his head, moving to sit on the bench with her. Her undead heart leapt into her throat at the closeness, the contact when their knees bumped, the way his fingers instead slipped from her wrist to twin through with her own.
“That’s ok.” she smiled, hiding her teeth this time. “I told you, I can wait.”
“You shouldn’t have to.” he shook his head. “It was my fault, I did some reading the last couple of days since I realized that the Magical Dimension doesn’t actually teach enough of your history to wizards.” he whispered the last word in case someone was listening closely. “I don’t know why, but I feel drawn to you and despite what my whole world tells me, I can’t possibly believe that you might be dangerous to me.” he admits and she finds herself leaning into him.
“I could tell you what I think, but I don’t think you’ll believe me.” her head falls softly onto his shoulder, “But I’ve got time.” she promises, “As much as you need.”
