The mercury rose with the same grim inevitability as the sun over the Sahara. Bertie Lissie wiped a bead of sweat from his brow with his rapidly greying shirt-cuff. It had been four hours, by his watch, since the rotter who’d locked him in this metal box had announced the deadline for the ransom.

Bertie knew his team would arrive eventually, of course. Whether they found him parboiled or chargrilled - only time would tell. He stretched his legs as far as he could and tried not to wince at the sound as his rubber-soled shoes unstuck themselves from the floor.
