Chapter Text
In a stone abbey, nestled in the rolling hills of the kingdom, Arlo de Montfort knelt before the altar, bathed in the warm glow of the candles. His life had been one of quiet devotion since childhood, his fate sealed long ago to serve God as a monk. Yet today, as he recited his prayers, his thoughts were troubled, his serenity disturbed by the news he had just received.
Abbot Gregory, his mentor and the guiding figure in his life, had delivered the news with a soft voice, though the weight of it crushed Arlo. He was to be married. And not just to any woman—he was to marry Isabella Devereux, the daughter of a powerful family, known for her cruelty, and someone Arlo had despised for as long as he could remember.
He had not seen Isabella in years, but her image still lingered in his mind like a dark cloud. They had never gotten along, even as children. She had always been haughty, mocking his quiet nature and his dedication to peace. She had looked down on him, as if he were beneath her, and now—now she would be his wife.
Arlo's heart sank. His life's devotion to the church, to God, was about to be stripped away from him by forces he could not control.
