Chapter 1: The INCIDENT!!!!

Chapter Text

Airy’s been… scrolling through twitter for about… um… he actually doesn’t remember how long he’s been scrolling for. The lantern tends to forget things alot…

.

.

.

…Oh. Something showed up on Airy’s twitter timeline. He’d recongnize that shade of blue anywhere…

…It’s Scenty. And she’s saying something about trans people being degenerates… but… Airy was trans, too. Airy got a bit confused. Was… was his favorite contestant really like that on the inside?

Airy didn’t want to know, but it seems like Airy already got an answer to it. He felt almost… sick. He didn’t know why his throat felt so tight all of the sudden. He didn’t know why his vision was getting so blurry. He didn’t understand…

.

.

.

…The lantern is shaking now. Airy could feel the wetness starting to drip from his eye, he hasn’t cried in so long. He doesn’t want to cry. Maybe if he actually was a cis man, maybe Scenty would’ve liked him more. The lantern buried his head into his hands, desperately trying to block out this unwelcome news.

But it wasn’t enough.

Maybe Airy could try to distract himself. Maybe if he hurt himself somewhere else, the realization might start hurting a little bit less.

The lantern stumbled out of the cave, the tears staining his glass as he trembled in the forest. The sun felt far too bright, but Airy knew he had to make this stop somehow. No matter what it took.

Airy nervously glanced upon the forest, every little noise only making the tears come down faster. Everything hurt, but the lantern knew he had to go outside in order to make the pain stop.

Airy’s singular, tear-soaked eye glanced over to a rather sharp-looking rock on the ground. Atleast the rock looked pretty… maybe it would be enough.

The lantern picked up the sharp rock, pressing its pointed tip against his skin cautiously. This should help him, if only for a short while… he pressed it slightly harder against his skin. Airy could feel it helping already.

With a small, final push, the rock’s pointed tip stabbed against his skin, drawing crimson blood as it did so. Airy winced slightly at the burning feeling of it scraping against his flesh, but at the same time, his blood looked so pretty… he had to do it again.

Slashing the sharp rock against his delicate wrist once more, Airy could already feel the tears fading as more and more drops of those comforting scarlet juices spilled out of his cuts, even if it stung rather badly.

The lantern kept dragging the pointed rock against his flesh again and again, admiring the way the vibrant red juices coating his arm glimmered in the sunlight as he gazed at his fresh, open cuts. Airy almost seemed to be smiling at how pretty they looked, despite the growing pain.

It hurt so bad, but felt so good as the lantern repeatedly penetrated his wrist with the now bloodstained rock. The pain was almost strong enough to make Airy’s eye water, but at the same time, it helped distract him from the knowledge that one of his favorite contestants didn’t see him as a man. Maybe Airy could tell Backpack about it once the lantern was done, but he was asleep right now and Airy didn’t wanna bother him.

The way the bright red fluids covered his arm made warm, bubbly feelings rise up in Airy’s chest as he continued cutting himself. The blood just looked… so beautiful to him. He hoped his contestants would like it, too… after all, Airy just couldn’t bring himself to stop… so he kept doing it.

.

.

.

…He kept doing it until the sun went down, and for a few long moments afterwards. The high was starting to wear off now… and Airy’s arm was really starting to hurt. The lantern used one of those spare towels he kept next to his computer to wipe it off, he… wasn’t even sure if Backpack was still asleep anymore.

Airy could hear a few footsteps outside, but he was too busy reminiscing on the high of hurting himself like that to notice.

“…Airy? Are you gonna go to sleep?” That familiar voice snapped the copper lantern out of his thoughts as he slowly turned around to look at Backpack. “…Soon.” Airy mumbled, gazing up at his former contestant with a blank, vacant expression as he spoke.

Backpack’s eyes noticeably shifted towards the lantern’s damaged arm, seeming a bit… afraid of it? Airy wasn’t sure why Backpack was looking at it like that… did Backpack see Airy as a real man, or was he just like Scenty? Airy didn’t know.

The two of them just awkwardly stared at eachother for what felt like several hours to Airy, before the backpack spoke. “…Airy, what did you do…” Backpack said, pointing to the lantern’s heavily scarred arm.

“…Do you want to try?” The copper lantern asked, his gaze softening as his singular eye stared into the deepest pits of Backpack’s soul.

(Abrupt switch into Liam’s pov because FUCK YOU.)

Liam stared at his captor with a wide, bug-eyed stare upon receiving what was probably the most concerning question that goddamn copper lantern had ever asked him. The backpack didn’t even know how to respond to that. He’s seen scars just like those before, and Liam’s not sure what made Airy do it. But it was still far too confusing for Liam to understand anyways.

“What… what happened?” Liam questioned, desperately attempting to pry into Airy’s mind to figure out why the lantern would be cutting himself. Especially this late at night…

Liam watched as Airy seemed to noticeably tear up from merely being asked what happened, but the lantern seemed to try to squeak out a response anyways, despite his apparent discomfort. “Sc-Scenty’s a… um…”

The green backpack’s eyes widened at the mention of Amelia’s competition name. What could she possibly have to do with this?

“She’s… uh… she doesn’t like trans people very much.”

…Oh. Oh god. Liam continued to simply stare at Airy with wide, completely bamboozled eyes at the blood-chilling revelation. The backpack barely even knew what to say, the words knocked out of his fabric throat as he kept gazing directly at the copper lantern infront of him.

“…Alright, Airy. L-Let’s get you to bed…” Liam simply mumbled, not exactly sure how he was even supposed to respond as he slowly took the lantern’s hand into his own, attempting to lead him into the cabin.

“Can I… sleep with you tonight?” The lantern murmured, clinging to Liam’s soft fabric skin in a desperate attempt to get some warmth.

“You know what? Fine… but only because I feel bad for you…” Liam mumbled to himself, dragging the lantern off to the cabin… oh, god… he didn’t even know that Airy was… that depressed. He was not expecting the bitch who held him hostage in a gameshow to be so sad all the time, but… they should probably just focus on getting some sleep. For now.

Chapter Text

Liam’s been laying in this god awful reed bed for… quite a few weeks now, really. Airy’s been cutting himself every few days, and now Liam has to wake up every couple nights to Airy showing off his brand new wounds…

…It almost made Liam feel… bad for him. Even if he knows he shouldn’t be pitying the little bitch who practically held him hostage in that pathetic gameshow, Liam knew how bad it could get for a trans person sometimes. That backpack still remembers one of his coworkers killing herself like it was yesterday…

And Airy’s even been downright clinging to him when the backpack was just desperately trying to sleep. Liam barely even knew why Airy was getting so touchy with him, but he was still thankful Airy hadn’t decided to go any further than that…

.

.

.

“Backpack… I wanna hold you again…” Airy mumbled, nuzzling into Liam’s fabric once more. Liam sighed, reluctantly letting Airy snake his scarred, bloody arms around the backpack. Liam could feel Airy practically cradling him, the lantern’s ragged breaths sending small shivers down Liam’s spine. But eh, the backpack hasn’t been held in a long time, so he guessed it was fine that his captor was being so soft with him.

Liam could almost go to sleep in Airy’s shockingly warm embrace, but at the same time, the knowledge that Amelia was a fucking terf was still weighing on his mind… how could he have trusted a transphobe? Could he have possibly foresaw this coming? Oh, god… Liam needed to sleep, but his thoughts were racing too loudly to do that…

“Please stay with me…” Airy desperately pleaded with him. Liam almost swore he could hear the lantern’s voice cracking, even if only for a brief second. It was making the backpack feel guilty, even if that’s the one thing Liam was actively trying not to feel right now. God, this shit was all so confusing. Liam just wanted something, anything to distract himself at this point…

“Hey… um… Airy? Do you have anything you want to say to me…” Liam questioned, staring at Airy with his cold, beady, unblinking objectfolk eyes.

“…Why are you asking that?” Airy asked softly in response, his voice still seeming about as dead inside as ever to Liam.

The backpack only rolled his eyes in response, giving Airy a frustrated glare. “I’m just not taking that news very well, Airy…” Liam hissed, the lantern returning his gaze quietly.*

“I’m not, either…” the copper lantern stated, pushing himself slightly closer to Liam as he spoke. “Airy… we should probably do something about her…” Liam mumbled, so tired of all that’s been happening over the past several months that he would do literally anything for a change of pace for once.

“…I know…” Airy softly spoke, averting his single eye away from his former contestant, something that seemed almost like sadness lacing the host’s typically monotone demeanor.

Liam seemed to only gaze at the copper lantern, seeming to be lost in thought once more before… an idea clicked in the backpack’s head. Maybe Amelia just needed a bit of a… punishment.

“…Airy. I’ve got a great idea!” Liam chirped, staring directly into the lantern’s very soul as he spoke.
“Uh… what is it?” Airy questioned, the lantern onlooking Liam’s abrupt shift in demeanor with a look of what was probably confusion on his glassy face.

“Well… basically we… um…” The words were stuck in Liam’s throat. He wasn’t even sure how he wanted to punish Amelia for her sins. The lantern only seemed to tug on Liam’s fabric once more, leaning in to listen closer to what the backpack was saying.

“…We punish her.” Liam chirped, the lantern looking on with intrigue as he heard the words of his former contestant. “…But how?” Airy mumbled, tilting his head like a befuddled puppy as Liam’s gaze flickered nervously around the room.

“Ummm… we’ll decide that later…” Liam mumbled, his beady soulless backpack eyes fluttering around the room nervously. Liam swore the way to punish the candle-who-won’t-be-named was right on the tip of his tongue… but he just couldn’t find the words for it… God, Liam was so tired right now.

“…Maybe we’ll wait until morning…”
