It started as a habit formed in stressful moments where everything had been taken from her but the very skin on her bones. Her nails sank into flesh and relief flooded her mind. It felt safe, grounding her to the moment as everything else seemed to fly past her grasp. Sometimes she wasn’t even aware that she was doing it but often she watched on as her fingers tore patches into her skin. The marks would fade eventually, hidden under layers of cloth and robes. But the pain never fully subsided, and that was what brought her back for more.
