Summary:

Xie Lian has a secret.

 

It’s not that big of a secret, he thinks to himself—but already the uneasy roiling of his stomach gives him away. He waits until Hua Cheng is both busy and distracted—yes Hua Cheng is often busy, but he is not often distracted. There isn’t much these days that seems capable of pulling Hua Cheng’s attention away from Xie Lian for more than a few moments. That’s why Xie Lian is forced to wait, forced to bear his patience wearing thin and threadbare as time stretches on and the itch underneath his skin grows stronger.

 

Finally, Hua Cheng is gone, and Xie Lian is free. The thought makes him dizzy with anticipation. He gets up, fumbling, ties his robes tight around himself, and goes for a walk. He finds a clearing near a creek, and sits down with a sigh. He lets his hand trail in the water, watches the water weave through his fingers, and feels a lightness in his head at the knowledge of what he is about to do.

 

Then he pulls back his sleeve, draws his blade, and closes his eyes.
