Welcome to Wayward City

Summary:

Hanadji reluctantly moves into Wayward City with their other, they meet someone unexpected.

Work Text:

It was another smoggy day in Wayward City, Hanadji has recently moved into an apartment complex in the projects. The apartment was small and the walls were littered with mysterious stains, possibly once human. They sat down on the carpet and looked around; they already wanted to move out of here. Unlike their other, they wanted to live in Smilesville. Hanadji was told that everyone there was quite nice, the same could not be said for Wayward City. But in truth this was not up to them. Their other, JJ, had begun a job in the city. Working for a company run by others. Hanadji walked towards the small balcony and slid the glass door open as it rumbled and squeaked, the scent of motor oil wafted inside like a cloud of gloom. They pinched their nose in disgust and quickly closed the door; this city’s melancholy was suffocating. They might as well just get used to it. In a few minutes they were dressed and ready to take a walk, unfortunately it took a few more minutes to get the door unstuck. In only a few steps their shoes were already wet, the strange thing about Wayward was that it always had the appearance of a place where it just rained. Puddles, wet benches, the dripping of water off leaves, but it never rained here; it never rained because if it did all hell would break loose. Just like it did on Suicide Day … Some thought maybe the city had a naturally humid climate, but there really was no definitive reason. Hanadji took a stroll down Killswitch Street and looked for something interesting, as they passed the Red Blood Cell Factory the smoke stacks pumped out red smoke that made its way high into the sky. Yuck …. They made a turn down Igneous Boulevard and noticed a playground. Dingy and rusty, but a playground nonetheless. They stood and considered if it was right for them to go play, they weren’t a kid anymore. They should act like it … but those swings looked so fun! They looked around for anyone who might be watching, nobody. With an excited hop and skip they jumped on the roundabout. Pushing off with their foot and spinning it as fast as they could. “Wheeee!!” They squeaked out, they were a little surprised that a squeal came out of their mouth. They were very quiet, and it usually didn’t feel natural for them to talk. Hanadji squeezed their eyes shut and felt the wind happily on their face as the roundabout slowly came to a stop. Their hair stuck out crazily after such a fun ride, while patting down their fluffy bob they realized something was missing … Their star hair lip had fallen out! They scrambled around, digging in the wood chips for it; the clip wasn’t super sentimental, but it sure was cute. “It’s um, over here” said a sudden voice. Hanadji’s head turned in an instant to face a woman standing right outside the playground. She had pink hair, a black hairband, and a blue dress. She pointed at the hair clip that was on the sidewalk next to her. Hanadji glanced at the hair clip, and then to the woman. “Oh my god was she there the entire time?? Am I weird? Does she think I’m weird?!” Thoughts like this sped through their mind while they stood there, motionless and wide-eyed. The woman took a moment before picking it up and holding it out in front of her for them to take, “It flew off your head when you were uh, on that spinny thing..” she said. Oh god, she did see them being a nerd! Shyly they walked over and slowly took the clip. “…Thank you, very much..” they whispered. The woman picked up a bag of groceries she had set down, apparently she had just gotten done with some errands. “I’m um, I just moved here … do you live in Wayward City too?” Hanadji said, mumbling a bit. The woman looked surprised that they actually wanted to start a conversation, “No, I live in Smilesville. I don’t usually come around here but I needed some supplies, I’m Reitanna” she replied warmly. Hanadji actually managed to crack a smile, they shook hands and waved farewell. Someone from Smilesville, they really were nice there! Hanadji happily walked back to the apartment, none the wiser that Reitanna had just come from the Torture Gear shop. Though it was rare, Reitanna did have some fun every now and then ….
