Chapter Text
“Breaking news. The symbol of the Sultan was seen above Christopher Leheil’s house this morning, and officials have confirmed that he has failed his task as The Sultan’s Subject. As of right now, no one has been chosen to begin the game anew, but we warn our viewers that they are to alert the authorities in the unlikely event that they are chosen as soon as possible."
Conversation screeched to a halt at the table, as the students down in the common areas stopped what they were doing, and slowly made their way to the TV. “Wait, what?” Kaminari asked, shocked. “The Sultan’s Subject died?”
Izuku could understand the shock. Christopher Leheil had been The Sultan’s Subject for nearly 3 years, longer than almost anyone else before him. It was a feat that would be impressive, if not for the knowledge of the horrible things the man must have done in order to accomplish it. Izuku didn't particularly pay attention to international news, but even he was aware of some of the heinous things the man had done in the name of the game. Though he supposed he couldn't blame the man too harshly. All things considered, he had been fairly unproblematic, at least compared to some of the other Subjects the world had seen. Since the Dawn of Quirks, there have been hundreds of Subjects, all chosen by the mysterious object known as the Sultan's deck.
It was a mysterious artefact, likely powered by a quirk, but having lasted far beyond its user. The Sultan’s Subject, the one chosen by the deck, was forced to draw a challenge card from the deck. They must always have one active at all times. Once drawn, the objective for said cards must be completed, and the card destroyed within the week. If they failed, as Christopher Leihil had, they would die. The Subject was protected from retribution and punishment for acts committed under the instructions of the cards, with those who attempted despite that, suffering harsh consequences and even death.
What made the game, and often The Subject so heinous was the nature of the challenges. Bloodshed, an act of violence and murder. Carnality, an act of carnal pleasure and lust. Conquest, an act of triumph and control. Extravagance, an act of indulgence and selfishness. Each card had a tier, one of four, and the higher the tier, the more meaningful the act to fulfil the card must be. At the higher tiers, such an act often required reprehensible and degrading actions to fulfill it. All too often, people allowed themselves to be lost in their sinister pleasures, using the game as an excuse for whatever sick deed they wished.
So when The Subject dies, the world watches on in worry. Though they may not enjoy the current one, they at least knew what to expect. A new Subject meant not knowing what was coming next. The devil you know verses the devil you don’t.
“At age 35, Christopher Leihil was considered to be a more Moderate Subject, not indulging too heavily in the protection of The Sultan’s deck, but not actively resisting its temptations. We can only hope that the newest Subject will be as unproblematic as Leihil.” The news station continued, but most of 1-A had tuned out by that point, turning to look at each other.
“It would seem he truly is.” Iida said, with a weak tone. It had never come up in conversation before, but it was clear with only a moment of thinking that he would not appreciate anything to do with The Sultan’s Game whatsoever.
“Fuck.” Jirou said, fairly accurately summing up everyone's thoughts. It was a testament to how occupied his mind was that Iida made no attempt to reprimand her. “That’s not good.”
She wasn't wrong. Anyone over 18 could be made the next Subject. But it also meant the possibility for the wrong person to become The Subject was there. It had happened before, and it would likely happen again in time. The only thing they could hope for was for the new Subject to be a good one.
“Definitely not.” Tsu said. “I don't know about you all, but I hope the next Subject isn't from Japan, Kero. I really don't want to get caught up in that chaos alongside the League.” Izuku couldn't blame her. They had only defeated Overhaul a week or so ago, and Nighteye's funeral had been only two days ago. While it was possible that the next Subject was a good one, it was unlikely. If they were in Japan, chances were things would become even more chaotic quickly.
Regardless, after a bit of worried conversation, and reassurances from around the class, Izuku went up to his room to go to sleep, hoping to be ready for the day tomorrow. It would be a Sunday, which meant he would have the day off, but he still needed to keep to his schedule.
-(o)-
Izuku woke up feeling well rested. For a moment, he simply allowed himself to stay lying down, with his eyes closed, relaxing, and basking in the ability to lie in for a bit. But he could feel an instinctive urge to open his eyes, and get out of his bed. Slowly, Izuku did open his eyes, glancing around, but found nothing immediately amiss. He shook his head, cursing his early schedule for preventing him from staying in bed, as he changed. But as he got the last of his clothes on for the day, the instinctive pull returned, drawing his attention to the desk. More specifically, towards the gold and green ornate box resting on it.
Izuku froze. He knew that box. It was the same box that had been depicted on the TV yesterday. A long, but thin rectangle, with the top side being able to slide out, revealing the inside. It was The Sultan’s Game. Izuku knew immediately, as he tried to turn and ignore it, but couldn't, that he had been chosen. He was to be the next Sultan’s Subject. Hesitantly, and oh so slowly, he crept forwards, inching towards his desk, praying for this to just be a bad dream. But as he eventually reached it, and his hands slowly closed around the antique box, Izuku knew that it was nothing but a fantasy. This was real. With shaking hands, Izuku slid the lid of the box open, and pulled out the card that rested atop the mysterious deck. It’s back was facing him, ornate designs of intricate patterns and flowers adorned the card. The box slid shut, and its image wavered, like a mirage, as it faded from existence. Slowly, Izuku flipped the card over in his hands.
A masterfully carved design started up at him. The outline of a man, holding his hands above his head, a golden crown floating between them, and in front of his face. The gold contrasted with the pale tan of the stone the card was made from. No writing could be seen on it, but Izuku didn't need it. He knew what this card was, as if some sixth sense had been afforded to him.
A Stone Conquest card.
He stared down at the card, simply waiting there. With a bit of mental effort, he could feel how long he had left. A few seconds under 7 days. It would seem that the clock was already ticking for him. He could only be thankful that he had received something easily accomplished.
It was fairly well known to the public which cards were easy to complete, and which were harder. Stone cards of any type didn't require much, but Bloodshed was by far the worst of the four. Bronze required more effort, and more importance, but Bloodshed remained the most sinful. Silver needed something of great importance, or an impressive act. Carnality became more difficult to accomplish while remaining kind. Gold required all but the highest possible investments and effort. Carnality became nearly impossible to complete without desecration of one’s morals, and likely, another's autonomy. Extravagance and Conquest were the easiest and the least harmful cards. Extravagance wasted money, while Conquest could be done without death.
Izuku could only hope his luck would hold. He considered, for a moment, if he could have gotten a different card, what his options would have been. On his desk, the box shimmered into existence again. It opened, showing its contents were empty. Izuku knew that should he place his card within the box then he could exchange it for a different one. If he shut the box instead and opened it once more, he would be able to draw another card, before the completion of his current one. He did not know how many times he could do either, but he didn't wish to find out.
Not desiring to replace his card, and certainly not wanting another, the box faded away once more. Izuku returned his attention to the card in his hands, and with a thought, it too, shimmered away in his hands. Some part of him could still recognize the card still held power over him, and could be called back at any time, much like the Game itself.
Now feeling exhausted, despite having just woken up, Izuku took a deep breath. He would have to inform his teachers and the principal. They would be able to tell the Japanese government that Izuku had officially been chosen as the next Subject. Begrudgingly, he walked to his door and opened it.
The hallway was empty, which was good. Deciding that he didn't want to run the risk of encountering anyone else for as long as he could, he opted for the stairs, rather than the central elevator, slowly heading down to the common rooms. As he reached the ground floor though, he knew his luck had run out. Quiet chatter echoed down the halls, no audible words but the sound of conversation nonetheless. The clinking of dishes, and the vague noises from the TV could also be heard. Taking yet another breath, and mustering every bit of confidence he had, Izuku began to walk, eventually stepping out of the dark hallway, and into the populated common rooms.
No one seemed to notice him at first, simply continuing their conversations. Shouji was the first to notice him, sending a small nod to Izuku, before turning back to Sato and Koda, where the former was talking quietly about an episode for one of his shows. Izuku couldn't help the knowledge that he gained from looking at them. Just like with the cards, Izuku had gained the ability to see people's values, so that he could judge if their usage could fulfil a card. All three were considered Stone Tier. The nod drew Sato’s attention, who waved, and gave a short and simple greeting. The vocal acknowledgement had Uraraka and Tsu turning around from the table to look at him. These two were more important. Not just to him, but also to the game, being considered Bronze Tier. Izuku supposed they were more well known than the other three.
“Morning Midoriya!” Uraraka said brightly, smiling. “How’d you sleep?” She asked instinctively, before she seemed to process the look on Izuku’s face. “Are you okay?” She asked after a moment, a concerned look forming.
Izuku glanced between her and Tsu for a moment. He wanted to brush it off, claim he just hadn't slept well, and that he would be fine tomorrow. But he could feel the burning presence of the card. Lying would serve no use here. Everyone would learn eventually. For a moment, he considered another option. To ignore the card, and buy the world at least a week, even if it cost him his life. But then he remembered why everyone was so terrified yesterday. Because they didn't know if the next Subject would be someone good. Izuku knew his self confidence was fairly lackluster, but he knew that at very least, while he was The Subject, he could do everything in his power to protect innocents from the danger of The Game. “No…” he admitted. “I’m… I’m not doing great.”
Uraraka and Tsu both gained worried frowns, and Izuku could hear the chatter from Sato’s group pitter out, no doubt also sending their own concerned looks. “What happened?” Uraraka asked. “Is there anything I can do for you?”
Izuku normally would have been touched by the genuine concern and friendship she showed him. Now he felt disgusted, not by her, but by The Game, knowing there may come a time he may be forced to use her loyalty in ways she likely hasn't intended. Disgust at himself for recognizing it. “No.” Izuku said vehemently, with more force than intended. He paused for a moment, seeing the shocked look form on her face. “No… I’m sorry, it’s just…” He breathed, trying to find a way to explain it. “I was…” He didn't know how to soften the blow.
But as his eyes Tsu’s slowly, he could see disbelief, and shock spread across it. She had thought of the possibility, but she was sure she was wrong. Yesterday’s news had likely stuck with her, to recall it now, and even consider it. But the longer she looked at Izuku, and the longer he stared back, with a pained face, the more certain she became. “No…” She whispered quietly.
Izuku swallowed. “Yes.” The word felt like bile in his mouth, a sickening confirmation of what he knew was real. Of the twisted game he now would be forced to play.
“Uh…” Uraraka said, glancing between the two, entirely lost. “Am I missing something?”
Tsu nodded, but didn't say more, the shocked look on her face frozen as she stared at Izuku. Which meant Izuku would be the one to say it. “I… I’ve been chosen.” He almost whispered.
It didn't clear any confusion, Uraraka only raising a single eyebrow. “By… What exactly?”
“The Game.” Izuku said. He closed his eyes, holding his hand out, and in his fingers, the card appeared. “The Sultan’s Game. I’ve been chosen as the next Subject.” He managed to say.
Uraraka gasped, and then everything was silent. Nobody moved, nobody said a word. The TV had been paused when Uraraka asked her question, and no one was eating now. Izuku’s eyes remained closed, terrified of the reaction of the rest of the class. Slowly, he could hear the sound of a chair moving, as it was pushed. Then he could feel arms wrapping around him. For a moment, Izuku tensed, worried at what was happening, but he quickly realized it was a hug. He opened his eyes to see it was Uraraka hugging him tightly. “It's okay.” She mumbled to him. “You’ll be okay.”
Slowly, and hesitantly, Izuku let the card vanish, as he cautiously beant to wrap his arms around Uraraka, returning the hug. Izuku’s eyes met Tsu’s, who still seemed shocked, but was slowly returning to her faculties. “That's…” She took in a shaky breath. “Okay that's… I can deal with that.” She murmured, likely more to herself than to anyone else. Izuku turned to look at the three on the couch, who all shared expressions of shock. Koda was scared, Sato was concerned, and Shouji was determined. No one else spoke for some time.
Eventually, Izuku let go of Uraraka, and gently nudged her, signifying he wanted to step away. It was clear she didn't want to let go, but she knew she had to. “I’ve got to go tell the teachers.” Izuku said. “If… If you all could let me be the one to tell everyone else…” Izuku trailed off. “I just would really rather be the one to tell them myself.” He finished.
Shouji nodded, and one of his arms formed a mouth. “We won't. Go let them know.” Izuku swallowed, and began to walk towards the door. “And Midoriya?” Izuku stopped, his hand outstretched to the front door, turning over his shoulder. “For what it’s worth, I’m not scared. I know we can trust you.” Izuku blinked, tears threatening to break free from his eyes, before he nodded, turning back to the door and stepping outside.
The walk to the main building wasn't long. Living on campus had allowed nearly everyone time to sleep in before classes, as the journey there was only a few minutes. Izuku was simply glad that he hadn't run into Iida. He didn't want to have to explain it to anyone else before his teachers. Izuku knew that telling the blue haired boy in particular would be quite draining.
As he stepped into the main building, and eventually reached the foyer before the principal's office, Izuku felt the tension within him build. He hadn't wanted this. He had wanted to be a hero, saving people. Now, he didn't even know if he would reach graduation. It hadn't been an exaggeration that Christopher Leihil’s time as The Subject was long. Almost 3 years put him up in the top 10 longest lasting Subjects, since the Dawn quirks. It was far more likely that Izuku wouldn't last that long. The more humanitarian Subjects never did. It was a tough pill to swallow, but there was no alternative. Wallowing in sadness would only cause it to happen sooner.
The secretary, a middle aged woman that Izuku had never seen before, waved him into the principal's office a short bit after he told her he needed to speak with the man. Stepping into it, Izuku realized he had never been in the room before. “Mr. Midoriya!” The principal’s chipper voice called. “A pleasure to see you! What brings you to my office this morning?” He asked, a calm expression on his face. Once again, the instinct of The Game told Izuku his status. Nezu was considered Gold Tier, the highest someone could be.
“I assume you heard the news last night sir?” Izuku asked first.
“Abouch Christopher Leihil, yes?” The Principal asked for confirmation. Izuku nodded slightly and he continued. “I have indeed.” His eyes narrowed slightly in thought. “Ah. I understand.” The man said. Izuku didn't doubt he did. Nezu was one of the smartest minds on the planet for a reason. Even mentioning The Game would have likely been enough for him to begin putting the pieces together. “May I see the card?”
Izuku held his hand out, and the stone card formed in it. He handed it over to the man. Nezu took it carefully, examining each and every detail. “Bloodshed, Carnality, Conquest and Extravagance. The four possibilities. There is no weaponry or sacrifice, ruling out Bloodshed. Similarly there are no erotic, or sensual depictions, removing Carnality. The gold could symbolize Extravagance, but it being in the image of a crown leads me to believe this is Conquest.”
“It is sir.” Izuku confirmed.
Nezu looked up, with a slight bit of surprise. “You know for a fact?”
Izuku nodded. “Being The Subject gives me a unique understanding of things. It’s like instinctive knowledge of certain aspects. That is a stone conquest card. You are considered a gold tiered person.” Izuku sighed. “I don't know how. I don't know why. All I do know is that I have to deal with this now.”
The Principal nodded, turning to look back at the card. “Fascinating. I had heard that The Subject could do such a thing, but it’s different to have it actually confirmed.” He paused, turning the card in his hands. “Can you recall it now?” He asked curiously. Izuku tried to make it disappear, like he had a few times today, but found himself unable to. He shook his head. The Principal held the card back out for Izuku. “Never take this out unless you absolutely must. Should it be stolen from you, you will become unable to destroy the card, even if you manage to accomplish it. It is a surefire method of assassination, one that must be kept hidden.” Immediately, Izuku dismissed the card, his eyes wide. “Firstly, know that this will not change your status as a hero student. You will obviously be allowed some leniency, and different rules, but this is not cause for dismissal.”
Izuku let out a sigh of relief. That had been something he was worried about. He hadn't thought they would, but the doubt had still remained. “Thank you Sir.”
Nezu nodded. “Next. While I hope that this is unnecessary, I feel it must be said regardless. While being chosen as The Sultan’s Subject is not justification for your dismissal from the hero course, the actions you undertake as part of it may be. While you will once again be afforded some leniency in terms of lethal force to satisfy Bloodshed, Vigilantism or Criminal connections to satisfy Conquest, and public indecency to satisfy Carnality, there is a limit.” The man’s tone had taken on a hard edge. Izuku knew that it was something that had to be said, but it didn't help the sliver of fear shoot through him. “You are not to harm an innocent. You are not to allow those under your command to go unchecked. You are not to do anything without consent.” Nezu paused. “Should you be caught having done any of these acts, even your status as the ninth holder of One For All will not protect your future in the heroics industry.”
Though his words were stern and harsh, the last sentence brought them all into question. Nezu had placed emphasis on the word caught. The man was not naive or stupid. He recognized that while those restrictions would not impede Izuku for a time, eventually, he would begin to draw Gold Cards. Cards that could not be satisfied by act alone, but must be supplemented with scorned and sinful additions. Nezu was making it clear that he understood some things were impossible to accomplish within pure morality. But despite that, Izuku could not allow himself to be caught, if he had to go beyond what was accepted. Izuku was more than simply The Sultan’s Subject. He was also the bearer of One For All. He had a duty beyond what the rest of the world would understand.
Izuku nodded. “I understand Sir.” He said after a moment. “How should we inform the rest of the teachers?”
“I can handle that myself, Midoriya. For now, you should inform your class, and begin to make plans. Though Conquest is your card now, you will eventually complete it. You will need patrols for Conquest, mental fortitude for Bloodshed, Savings for Extravagance, and good relationships for Carnality.” Nezu clasped his hands together. “Your journey will not be easy. But I have faith that you will have the strength to see it through. Do not give up.”
Izuku nodded, slowly standing, and exiting the office. He didn't head back to class right away, instead, heading to the gym. He needed to clear his mind. When he reached it, he saw he wasn't alone. Slowly doing some curls on one of the sides was Tetsutetsu. Stone Tier. The boy looked up, as Izuku walked in, and smiled, putting down his weights to give a wave. The classes had a much better relationship after the training camp, with 1-B seeing firsthand what 1-A had gone through. Excluding Katsuki and Monoma, no one held a grudge or hostility anymore. “Hey, Midoriya! Good to see you! Getting some morning training in?”
Izuku managed a weak smile. “Yeah. Gotta keep up with my training.” He walked closer to the boy, knowing Tetsutetsu was very similar to Kirishima, and just as talkative.
“I get that man! Gotta be the best we can! If you want, I could spot you for some stuff, if you’d be down to spot me too! I was doing curls and stuff, when it was just me, but now that you’re here, we could do the more draining things!” Tetsutetsu grinned at Izuku.
“Yeah, sure. I’m down to spot you, Tetsutetsu.” The name was a bit awkward coming out, Izuku never having actually said it out loud before.
The silver haired boy just laughed. “Call me Tetsu. Much less of a mouth full!” He said with a grin. The boy stood, and began to walk over to the bench press, Izuku following him over. “So, what’s going on? I can see by the look on your face you ain't doing too great.” The boy said, glancing at Izuku as he loaded the bar with weights.
Izuku sighed. He intended to come here to get his mind off of things. That obviously wouldn't be happening. But as he waited, not saying anything Tetsutetsu didn't pressure him. He just continued to load the bar, patiently waiting. He had almost 300 on the bar before he stood back up. Maybe, Izuku could tell him. It would be easier than his class at least. “You sure you wanna know? It’s kinda heavy.”
Tetsutetsu turned to send him a grin. “Well it’s a good thing I’ve got some strong muscles then, no?” Both he and Izuku laughed at the joke. “Seriously man. You don't have to tell me if you don't want to, but it’s pretty clear something's weighing on you. Letting it out might help.”
“Yeah… I suppose it would be easier to tell you than my class… Ease me into it.” Izuku mumbled quietly to himself. Tetsutetsu raised an eyebrow, but didn't say anything as he lied down on the bench. “Want me to wait until after you’re done?”
Tetsutetsu slowly lifted the bar, not struggling at all. “Nah, this ain't close to my max.” He said, slowly lowering the bar. “Just to work the muscles. I can concentrate on ya. If you’d rather wait til after though, I get it.”
Izuku shook his head. “No. I trust you.” He said. He took a deep breath. “Did you see the news last night?”
“Not much. Something about The Sultan’s Subject?” Tetsutetsu said, as he pushed the car back up.
“Yeah. The old Subject died. Today the new one was chosen.” Izuku remembered Nezu’s warning, glad that Tetsutetsu was actively holding the bar. He didn't think the boy would try anything, but the safety afforded to it was a comfort. His right hand moved to hover near the bar, just in case the news was too shocking for the boy, and he lost control. In his left hand, within Tetsutetsu’s line of sight the card appeared. “I’ve been chosen as the newest Subject.” After a moment, he dismissed it again.
Tetsutetsu’s eyes went wide, and the bar shook slightly, but he quickly steadied it. “Holy fuck.” He whispered. “Are you okay man?”
Izuku blinked at him. “You’re not… worried?” He asked.
“Dude. I’ve heard and seen the lengths you're willing to go to help people. If there’s anyone I’m worried about, it’s you.” That was certainly not the response Izuku was expecting. Shouji’s reaction had been the only other one with complete faith in him like Tetsutetsu’s, but that made far more sense. Shouji knew Izuku well, had seen him firsthand, and he knew the type of person Izuku was. Tetsutetsu didn't have that experience. And yet, he said that with just as much, if not more faith than Shouji. Everyone else, even Tsu, one of his closest friends was terrified at that information. And yet Tetsutetsu was more worried about him.
“I…” Izuku didn't know how to respond. “Thank you.” He said quietly. “That's… That means a lot.”
Tetsutetsu grinned up at him. “Don't mention it man!” His grin slipped a little, turning into a more genuine look of concern. “Seriously though, are you good? That’s gotta be a little scary, no?”
Izuku sighed. “Yeah, a bit. But I’ll do what I can to keep people safe from this for as long as I can.”
Tetsutetsu nodded, but sent him a hard look. “Make sure you remember to include yourself in that statement. We’ve all heard of your self destructive streak. Don't keep it going with this. There’s no coming back from that.”
Izuku nodded, a slight grin forming. “Yeah. I’ll be sure to remember that. Can't save anyone if I’m not still around.”
Tetsutetsu grinned. “Exactly man. Besides, we like having you around!” He pushed the bar back up, and placed it on the stand, sitting up. “If you need help, and I can do something for you, promise me you’ll ask. You don't gotta do everything alone, and I’m certain you’ve got more than a few people willing to help you out. Hell, I’m sure a good portion of 1-B would rally if you need us. Rival classes we may be, you all are our brothers and sisters in arms. We got your backs.” The boy held out a fist.
Izuku smiled, a real, genuine smile for the first time that day. He bumped his own fist against Tetsutetsu's lightly. “Thanks. That… That means a lot.”
“No problem!” The boy stood up. “Need me to adjust the weights?”
Izuku turned to look at them. “How much is on here?”
“Hundred fifty. I don't know how much you're used to, so I figured I’d ask.”
Izuku considered it for a moment. Unlike Tetsutetsu, Izuku could do with a challenge. Not a massive one, but one he would still have to work for. “Let's add a bit more. I wanna do 500 if that’s fine with you.”
Tetsutetsu whistled, impressed. “Damn, training with your quirk? Really pushing it.” The boy quickly moved to begin adding weights to the bar.
Izuku, who had begun doing the same thing on the other side, raised an eyebrow. “No, I’m just doing a bit more of an intense workout without my quirk. Pushing myself, but it’s not my PB.” He said.
He missed the absurd look Tetsutetsu sent him, as he went to sit on the bench. “Damn.” The boy said, not knowing how else to respond. He didn't know if Izuku would actually be able to lift it, but he didn't think the boy would be intentionally lying. “Do you want me to keep the Subject thing a secret? I don't mind if you do.”
Izuku slowly pushed the weights off the rack, and began his reps. “No need.” He said, breathing a bit. It wasn't difficult, but talking while doing it meant he did have to breathe a bit harder. “Everyone’s going to figure it out soon anyway. You’re welcome to tell your class. Though if you could give me a few hours to just let me tell mine in person first, that would be great.” He glanced up, looking at Tetsutetsu, who was staring at him in shock and amazement.
“Yeah… sure.” The boy said, slightly dazed. “If this is just a bit of an intense workout, what the hell’s your PB?” He said incredulously.
“Haven't pushed it recently but quirkless it’s 600 bench press.” Izuku said. He knew that was quite a bit, having seen how much those in his class lifted. Only Shoji and Sato came close, and each of them could only manage around 550 quirkless, though Shouji’s quirk wouldn't help much anyway.
The two continued to talk for a while, going through various exercises, and calming Izuku down. By the end, Izuku had felt he had made a friend in 1-B, and was feeling much better about the whole situation. He still didn't enjoy being The Subject, but it no longer felt quite so hopeless.
-(o)-
Returning to the dorms around lunch time caused a bit of tension to return to Izuku, but he recalled Tetsutetsu’s words, taking a deep breath, and calming himself. He pulled out his phone, and sent a text to the class group chat.
Izuku Midoriya
If everyone could please come down to the common room, I have something important I have to tell you all
Denki Kaminari
Omw in one sec! Busy kicking Sero’s ass at Hero Brawl!
Fumikage Tokoyami
Myself and Dark Shadow will be down in a moment.
Katsuki Bakugou
Finally figured it out, eh Susan Pevensie?
Mina Ashido
What does that even mean Blasty?
Minoru Mineta
I think it’s supposed to be a reference to Narnia, so…
Minoru Mineta
Bakugou probably means that he thinks Midoriya is coming out of the closet.
Izuku sighed at Katsuki’s text. Izuku didn't exactly try to hide that he was Bisexual, but he also hadn't outright said it. He also didn't intend to, but if the blond pushed it, he wasn't afraid of admitting it. That was certainly not what he wanted to tell everyone though.
Slowly, people began to trickle into the room, with those who were in the common area in the morning having a knowing look, while the others sent reassuring smiles. Izuku had to resist the urge to roll his eyes at the confusion Bakugou had accidentally caused. A few minutes later, everyone was eventually gathered downstairs.
“So, evidently, because Kacchan has felt the need to detail my original topic I should probably address his words first.” Izuku started, knowing that no one would be paying attention until he did. “I am Bisexual, no I wasn't in the closet, I just didn't announce it, that is not what I called you down for, let’s move on.” Izuku hear a few chuckles from Kaminari and Mina, and a loud whoop from Kirishima, but they quieted down quickly. He did roll his eyes at that, before taking a deep breath. The thing that I have to mention is actually more important than that.” Everyone quieted down, and waited for Izuku to continue. “Last night, we all saw that Christopher Leihil had died. This morning, I found The Sultan's Game waiting for me on my desk.” Izuku summoned his card into his hand. “I have been officially chosen as the next Subject.”
The mood in the room plummeted, as everyone realized the implications of that. Some, like Mineta, and Ojiro were visibly terrified. Most were worried, either for Izuku or for themselves Izuku didn't know. But a few, like Todoroki and surprisingly Kaminari, gained serious looks. The same looks Shouji and Tetsutetsu had sent him. Izuku dismissed the card, as chatter began to sound. “What kind of luck is that?” Sero said incredulously.
“The really shitty kind.” Kirishima said. “So not Manly at all.”
“If I may ask…” Yaoyorozu’s voice sounded out over the crowd, quieting everyone else. She sounded nervous, but not scared. Unsure was the best descriptor. “May we ask what card you received?” She said hesitantly.
Izuku nodded. “I got the Stone Conquest card.” He said. “It should be fairly simple to fulfill. A patrol should be enough for it.” He sighed, looking at the class. “I’m not going to drag any of you into this. I can handle what I need to on my own. I just felt like you all deserved to know.”
No one spoke for a moment. “You should know that you can't.” Todoroki eventually said. “I understand not wanting to pull us into it, but you don't need to lie to us. Not every card you’re going to pull can be accomplished by yourself.” He paused. “Let us make the decision on whether or not we help you. Don't just push us away before you give us that chance. I don't know about the rest of them, but don't think for even a second I won't help you.”
No one responded. It seemed that despite Todoroki’s inspiring words, not everyone could share the same conviction. Though he attempted to be reassuring, it only served to do the opposite, when no one else spoke up. Izuku looked down in either shame, or worry. He wasn't sure which was more prevalent.
“You can see our values, right?” Hagakure said, breaking the silence with a quiet question. “That’s how that works, no?”
Izuku looked up. Despite being unable to see her skin, he could still tell her Tier. Stone. “I can. But they’re not very flattering for most of you. Do you want to know?”
Weary glances looked around the room. “I would. She said quietly.
Izuku nodded slightly. “Anyone who doesn't want to know, or doesn't want theirs told to the rest of the class, you should leave. If you want to know yours, but don't want to share it, simply text me, and I can tell you.” He said quietly, still awkward.
There was some shuffling, and a few members of the class left to go upstairs, but the vast majority stayed.
“Aoyama, you’re Bronze.” The boy preened at that knowledge. “Mina, you’re Stone.” The girl puffed out her cheeks in exaggerated frustration. “Tsu, Iida, and Uraraka, the three of you are Bronze.” All three held varying looks of satisfaction. “Kaminari, You’re Stone.” The boy rubbed the back of his neck, slightly embarrassed. “Kirishima, you’re Bronze.” The boy gave a bright grin. “Sato, Shouji, Jirou, Sero, Tokoyami, you all are Stone.” No one in the group seemed particularly surprised at that, but Sero made a joking groan of disappointment. “Todoroki, you’re Silver.” The boy nodded, but those around him were definitely impressed. “Hagakure, Mineta, you both are also Stone.” The girl gave a quiet hum, but didn't seem to expect anything else. “And lastly Yaoyorozu, you’re also Silver.”
Of the class, Only Ojiro, Koda, and Bakugou didn't stay to hear their rankings, leaving back to their rooms. The rest of the class slowly accepted their rankings, and began to disperse again. Todoroki came up to Izuku. “I'm sorry about earlier. I hadn't realized they wouldn't share the same feelings as me.” The boy said.
Izuku smiled slightly at him. “It’s not your fault.” He reassured him. “A lot of them were just caught by surprise. I’m…” He hesitated. “I’m sure most of them just need some time to think on it.” Even as the words left his mouth, he couldn't help but feel how unsure he was.
Todoroki frowned, but simply nodded. “Well, it’s certainly good that I am Silver, no? I’ll be able to help you with more things.”
Izuku raised an eyebrow. “Uh… that's not… really how that works. For your rank to help with conquest or bloodshed you would have to be the target, which wouldn't end well, and Extravagance doesn't really need anyone else, just money. The only reason your rank would come into play is for…” Izuku’s cheeks reddened. “Is for Carnality.” He managed out at a whisper. “But you don't need to worry about that anyway so-”
“Why not?” Todoroki asked genuinely.
Izuku’s face turned even more red. “Well- it's just. You know what it means right?” He looked down, and his voice pushed even more. “It- um… It means sex.”
“I said that I would help you. I am more than aware of what Carnality would require, and that it cannot be completed on its own.” He paused, staring Izuku in the eye, the shorter boy having looked up in shock as Todoroki began speaking. “Should you require it, I will aid you.” The boy paused, and for the first time in his life, he saw the beginnings of a blush from on his cheeks. “Or even if you simply desire it.” He admitted quietly.
Izuku spluttered, his cheeks burning crimson, unsure of how to react. “That’s um…” He choked on his words. “That…”
Todoroki didn't stop there. “I am aware that through the game, you may need, or even enjoy multiple partners.” He looked away, uncharacteristically shy. “All I ask is that you consider me for one of those spots.”
Izuku stared at him. He wasn't blind. Todoroki was extremely attractive. If you googled pretty boy, Izuku was fairly certain Todoroki would be the first picture to show up. He would be lying if he said he hadn't at least considered, or had the thought about the boy in that way. But never in a million years did he think that anything might come from it. Here though, having essentially just been confessed to, Izuku found he couldn't fathom anything else now.
Despite that, both were fairly embarrassed at the exchange, and their faces burned red. “I um… I think I can do that.” Izuku mumbled. He sent a small smile towards Todoroki.
The heterochromatic boy sent a similar smile, before turning. “I’ll… leave you to yourself for a bit.” He walked away, towards the stairs, leaving Izuku to his thoughts.
-(o)-
After a long day, Izuku was exhausted. The mental effort and realizations had been heavily draining, and he was almost ready to go to sleep. But for the moment he was sitting on the edge of his bed, holding the Conquest card in his hands. He rubbed his thumb over the smooth stone surface, thinking about how everything would change from this point on.
A knock at his door drew his attention from the card. It disappeared in a moment, as Izuku stood, and walked to the door. He slowly opened it, to find Shouji and Yaoyorozu. Shouji seemingly had no issue with Yaoyorozu, but the girl was obviously unsure of what to do, likely not having expected his presence. “Uh…” Izuku looked between the two. “Did you… need something?”
“I…” Yaoyorozu looked towards him, before her eyes flicked back towards Shouji, and then back to Izuku. Whatever she had come to do, she was no longer certain if she wanted to go through with it in front of the other boy.
Shouji has no such reservations. “I apologize for not saying anything earlier, but I’ve decided. I’ve seen the things that The Sultan’s Game can do. See what kind of people can exist in this world, and that this kind of excuse is one far too many people are more than willing to abuse.” Shouji took a deep breath. His arm that he had been speaking through turned back to a hand. Instead, the boy continued through his original mouth, which so far, no one within the class had heard. It was deeper than his normal tone, and more rough. It sounded slightly hoarse, despite the lack of use. “I have faith that you are not like them. I have faith that you will do as much as you can to protect the most people. So I will do all I can to help you fulfill the cards. Because as long as you are The Subject, this world has one of the best options for prosperity that it can get.”
Izuku and Momo stared at him in shock. “You… You’re sure?” Izuku asked quietly.
Shouji nodded. “I am. I have seen what you are capable of, and what your character is like at our worst. I trust that you will do what is right, and that you will protect the most people. The Sultan's Game has the power to be used for good, despite the intentions of being the opposite. If anyone can do so, it is you.”
The sheer conviction in his tone stunned Izuku. While he considered Shouji a friend, and a trusted classmate. But he didn't know what he had done to earn such… The only word Izuku could use was Devotion. Shouji had such confidence in his ability, and Izuku didn't know why. “Why?” He whispered. “Why me? Why are you so confident in my choices?” His voice wavered. “I… Even I’m not sure if I can really do enough good to make it worth it. How can you be so sure? What have I done to make you believe in me this much?”
“Because you don't give up.” Shouji said. “At the USJ. I was maybe the only other person to see what had happened with Shigaraki. To see he had touched Tsu, and yet, you had rushed him, despite the danger. To see you willing to step between All Might and the villains. During the sports festival, You broke your fingers to help Todoroki.” Slowly, he gained more conviction, more assurance of his words as he spoke. “During internships, the story is that you, Todoroki, and Iida were rescued by endeavor. But I didn't trust it. I don't know what actually happened, but I know you played a bigger role than anyone else wants us to think. During the training camp, you shattered your arms to protect Kota from Muscular.” Shouji’s voice shook as he continued, obviously the emotion from that night coming back. “Even then, even when you couldn't use your arms, even when they had to be screaming in pain, you continued to fight, to save me and Tokoyami. You could think clearly enough to plan and use Dark Shadow to our advantage, as well as saving Tokoyami. You didn't give up trying to save Bakugou, and your plan let us catch up with him.” Izuku could hear it now. Could hear the absolute faith Shouji had in him, as he continued to speak. “You couldn't leave it there, and you helped rescue Bakugou from Kamino Ward. And then you helped defeat Overhaul, breaking yourself again and again to do it.”
Shouji breathed heavily, and for a moment, everyone in the room was silent. No one said a word. The raw emotion the boy’s words had carried continued to speak for him, well after any words had finished.
“I have faith in you because if I didn't, I don't know if I could have faith in anything else.” Shouji looked Izuku in the eye. “All my life, I have been scorned, and been exiled for my quirk. I have hoped for a day when someone who could make a difference would appear. Here you are, and to me, there could never be anyone else. You have the potential to change the world, to change everything. And so I will do everything I can to help you along the way.”
Izuku just stood there, stunned, taking in the boy’s words. Shouji had always been a grounding presence for the class. A gentle giant, one capable of combat, but one everyone got along with, and liked. But from just this single interaction, from just Shouji’s words alone, Izuku learned more about him than he knew about most of their class. This was someone who needed a duty, and he believed that Izuku was the one who could be trusted to give it to him. Izuku took a deep breath. “Then if you so wish it, I will accept your aid, all that you are willing to offer me. In exchange, I swear to do everything I can to aid you in your goals, and to use my power as you believe I can.”
There was no fanfare. No flash of gold, or brilliant spark after a declaration such as that. There didn't need to be. This was not an agreement enforced by The Game. These were mutual words of trust and faith, between two people whom Izuku could now see had been wronged by society too many times. Like recognizes like, and the scorned band together.
Slowly, the two remembered they were not alone in the room. Yaoyorozu was still there, looking on at the exchange in shock. Slowly, she snapped out of it, and glanced between the two, slowly calming down. “I…” She blushed slightly. “Admittedly my reason for being here isn't quite so impactful as that, but I do hope you’ll appreciate it regardless. I have thought about it, and I’ve come to a similar conclusion as Shouji, though not quite so devoted.” She smiled softly and glanced between the two. “I trust that you will be able to protect people, for as long as your remain The Sultan’s Subject. To aid you with that, I offer my assistance for any Extravagance task that you require it for.”
Izuku was stunned. On top of Shouji’s declaration, Yaoyorozu also offering her help was hard to comprehend. When he woke up this morning, to see the deck on his desk, he had thought his life as he knew it was over. But Nezu had assured him heroics was not off the table. Tetsutetsu had shown him that people weren't always scared off by The Game. Todoroki had reminded him of how much he already could help, and how much he valued his friends. And now, Shouji and Yaoyorozu showed just how much he had influenced his classmates without even knowing it. How much he could inspire those around him, just as All Might did.
He wasn't done yet. This Game would not win. It would not take his goals from him, and it would not stop him from helping everyone he could.
Notes:
Hello Everyone! Welcome to the first chapter of The Sultan's Subject! This is an idea that I had when I played the game called Sultan's Game. It's a very interesting card game, and the questions of Morality, and decisions gave me the idea for Izuku being the one to struggle with this. Hopefully this idea intrigues you all as much as it intrigued me!
So far, this chapter is just set up, so I won't be explaining all too much but hopefully the chapter itself did most of the clearing up. Let me know what you all think though!
Anyways, thank you all for reading! If you noticed any spelling or grammar issues, please let me know, as well as any thoughts, questions, or theories! I love reading your comments!
I also have a discord server if anyone is interested in joining! We chat about this fic, and my other main ones, as well as other fics and recommendations. It's also just a fun place to hang out and chat! If you're interested, you can join with this Discord Link

Chapter Text
Classes had started the next morning like usual, although nearly everyone could tell there was some measure of tension in the air. Aizawa hadn't done anything different during the morning other than a small nod to Izuku as he walked in. He wasn't sure if anyone else had even noticed it, considering he was fairly certain he could feel the eyes of nearly everyone else in the class on him through the homeroom.
He didn't like it.
Todoroki, Shouji, and Momo had helped, but it hadn't taken away all of the nervousness and fear. He was still terrified of The Game, terrified of the cards he was going to get. Terrified of what he was going to do to fulfill them. He closed his eyes for just a moment, as his hand holding his pencil clenched into a fist. Shouji was right. The Game had potential to be used for good, just like anything else that granted power. A leader could raise a country to new heights, or crush its people under heel. Power changes people. It was a known fact. Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.
But something else Izuku knew was that the saying everyone was so sure was true, wasn't. Not entirely. Because power, wealth, worship… They do not corrupt. They reveal. A man who becomes wicked with power is a man who was always wicked even without, simply held back by inability. A man who is arrogant with wealth, who flaunts his status, was always arrogant, they simply had nothing to be proud of. A man who indulges in worship, in sacrifice and servitude is a man who would always indulge in acts of kindness, but who had no one to do them for him.
Izuku was reminded of Thirteen’s words, back at the USJ. Quirks were a tool. So was power, status, influence, wealth, intelligence… All of them were simply tools, and while one man may use a blade to harm, another may use it to help create. Izuku would simply have to remember the responsibility he held. He liked to think that he has always been a good person. And that even if his worst flaws and traits were brought to bear by The Game, he would remain such.
He opened his eyes, and unclenched his hand. He would not fall into the same trap the other Subjects had. Izuku was the first among them who was a hero, hopeful or otherwise. He would be the first to show the world the capabilities The Game had for good.
-(o)-
Hero Foundational Training was always a breath of fresh air for the class. They could test their skills, train their abilities, and push their limits. All in a safe environment. But more than that, more than training, what made it comfortable was what had made their class so different from every other first year class in UA. Hero Foundational Training was where they could fight.
The first time Izuku had realized it had been the day after the Provisional Licensing exam. He had been so nervous during the second portion, the rescue section. Everyone in his class had, at least slightly. Even Uraraka and Tsu, the two members of the class who most wanted to be rescue heroes, had tension during the beginning. But when Gang Orca appeared? It had been stressful, it had been intense.
But it had also been freeing.
They were used to it. To the chaos of combat, to the adrenaline rush, to the fire burning in their limbs. That was something they were familiar with, to a degree beyond any of the other applicants. It had been petrifying, during the USJ. It had been terrifying against Stain, and during internships. It had been dangerous during the training camp. By the time Overhaul had happened, the group that were involved were ready for it. Combat and fighting had become natural to them. Freeing in a twisted way.
Maybe that was why this class was different from usual. All Might had heard the news, just like Aizawa. Their heroics class for the day was just one on one fights in ground beta. No objectives, no targets, no worries about property damage. Just a basic combat exercise, to bleed the fear and frustration out. It was something they all seemed to need, and appreciated, if the energy picking up when All Might announced it was any indication.
Izuku himself had been chosen to face off against Tokoyami, and based on the excited murmurs, this match was one of the more anticipated ones, on par with Bakugou Vs Todoroki. Izuku didn't pay that much attention. As he and Tokoyami made their way towards their starting regions, Izuku could tell that even though the other remained stoic looking, he was also fairly excited about the chance to let loose against one of the few members of the class who could truly keep up.
The two eventually split up, heading to their starting areas. They were in a less elevated region, still containing a number of buildings, but they were on the smaller side. Only 2-3 stories tall at most. Faux corner stores, street stalls, and office buildings littered the streets. Despite that, the streets were compact, and thin. Small alleyways stretching between buildings, side streets barely wide enough for a single person. They had been given this region intentionally. It was somewhere both of them thrived in. Izuku in tight spaces, with walls to bounce off of, and Tokoyami in the shade and darkness, to power up Dark Shadow.
Izuku took a breath, feeling One For All flow through him. He closed his eyes for a moment, letting the quirk flow through him, the wind ruffling his hair and his hood. He waited for what felt like ages, that moment stretching on into infinity, the brief time of tranquility as the anticipation grew in his body. And then the scenario began and his attention snapped sharp like a rubber band as he shot forwards.
Instantly, the sky ahead of him darkened, Tokoyami shooting up into the skies, Dark Shadow blotting out a section of the sky, and casting a shadow down onto Izuku. Despite that, Izuku felt a grin slip onto his face. He leapt up, and slightly to the side, hitting the solid wall of one of the buildings before pushing off, and leaping across the street, slowly gaining altitude as he leapt back and forth, green electricity rippling over his form.
A claw of Dark Shadow's moved to swat him out of the air as they neared each other. Izuku however, was prepared and with a flick of his finger, he was moved just slightly out of the way of the incoming attack. The movement caused Dark Shadow to miss, and Izuku to continue forwards towards Tokoyami. The boy’s eyes widened and Dark Shadow's other limb curled up in front of him just as Izuku’s kick hit, slamming into the quirk, and sending his classmates flying backwards, roughly hitting the side of one of the buildings. It wouldn't be enough to take him out though, not by a long shot.
The boy’s shade gripped the concrete walls, her darkened claws digging into the material, leaving gashes in the building. Tokoyami burst forwards, Dark Shadow surging in front of him, both of her arms aiming to hit Izuku, having learned their lesson quickly. Izuku, left stranded in the air now, and unable to do the same move as before to dodge, was left with little options. He turned with the direction of the hit, doing his best to absorb it as much as possible, as he was sent back down to the ground.
Izuku crashed roughly, mentally thanking his quirk for giving him more durability, as Full Cowling increased in percentage. Despite that, it was still painful, and he groaned as he clambered to his feet. Tokoyami had the advantage in the air, being able to fly. Izuku had intended to ground him, but that interaction had shown it wasn't worth the risk. Tokoyami threw himself down, directly towards Izuku, trying his best to catch him off guard, but Izuku had expected it. He leapt off of the floor, up to the second floor of the nearby building.
Tokoyami hit the ground just as Izuku hit the wall, but Izuku could move faster than the other could turn. He launched himself off of the wall, rocketing back down on top of Tokoyami. Dark Shadow covered his form, Black Abyss in action. It would only be able to protect him so much though, and when Izuku swung his leg into the upper back of Tokoyami, the boy went rolling across the street. Izuku didn't let up, following in his tracks, a lightning trailing behind him.
Tokoyami pushed himself up to his feet, throwing Dark Shadow outwards, a threat Izuku couldn't avoid, while the boy made his way to one of the darkened alleyways. Izuku couldn't let that happen. Once the boy got in the darkness fully, this fight would get much harder. Not impossible, but certainly more difficult. Izuku’s eyes narrowed, as he slammed a punch into the side of Dark Shadow. Tokoyami was less focused, and therefore Dark Shadow was less coordinated. Despite that, she wasn't a threat Izuku could just bypass.
He needed to shut this down, and now. Tokoyami was only a few steps away from the alleyway, already in the shadows of the building, and soon he would be fully concealed from the sun. Dark Shadow was getting stronger by the second. Izuku sent another kick into the form of the quirk, and the bright flash of electricity rippling over his costume caught his eye, as it tended to, despite his familiarity with it. Bright lights automatically grabbed the brain's attention. It was part of why Izuku quickly became the first target in most fights.
But it was light. Exactly what he needed. The higher his percentage, the less contained his lights were. Which meant something was going on with his efficiency. He stepped aside from a claw of Dark Shadow’s thoughts running a million miles an hour. If his efficiency was the problem, he could test it. Izuku dropped the percentage drastically, going from 18 to 8 in a second. Instantly, the electricity sparked to life, intensifying, and causing dark Shadow to baulk slightly before returning to the offensive. Izuku sparked back up to defend, while thinking on the feeling.
The energy had lifted, but not halted when he dropped percent. Like it was still being used in some fashion but no longer using his body as a conduit. Combining that feeling with the flash of electricity, Izuku was able to understand the reaction. He was still using a massive amount of One For All during Full Cowling. It was simply not being directed into his limbs, and thus was being expressed as green electricity as it sparked off into the air, undirected. He knew from practice that it was fairly weak, technically real electricity, but at such low levels that it barely did anything to anyone. But it was also being washed inefficiently.
He shoved Dark Shadow back a step, and held his hands out in front of him. He focused inwards, closing his eyes, despite how stupid it would normally be to do so in a fight. His focus turned inwards, to his quirk, before outwards again, to the energy flowing out of him. He took control, focusing the energy not through his limbs like either full cowling, or his smashes, but rather out of his body. Streams of green lightning arced between his hands, before he suddenly swung them together, boosting the output instantly, and tilting his palms ever so slightly towards Dark Shadow.
Instantly, his intentions paid off. Even through his closed eyes, he watched his vision go red, then orange, then tan, all in an instant as the light shined through his eyelids. Just as soon as it occured, a violent noise like thunder echoed through the city streets, nearly deafening himself, and likely Tokoyami as well. He found himself shoved backward slightly by the shockwave of air, stumbling. The light disappeared just as quickly as it had occurred, barely enough time to even realize it was there before it was gone, and Izuku’s eyes shot forwards, even as his head rattled in his skull momentarily.
Izuku, while slightly surprised at the results being so effective, had expected some of them. Tokoyami and Dark Shadow on the other hand, were not prepared whatsoever. Tokoyami blinked spots from his vision, Dark Shadow having disappeared entirely under his cloak. Izuku was slowly returning to normal, and he knew he would have to capitalize on the opportunity now, because he wasn't sure doing that again would be safe for either of them.
He rushed forwards, reactivating Full Cowling, and within moments, had Tokoyami on the ground, training cuffs around his arms. “Tokoyami has been captured! Midoriya wins!” All Might announced. Almost instantly, the struggle left Tokoyami, and Izuku quickly unlocked the training cuffs. Tokoyami rolled over to his back, breathing heavily, as he squinted up at Izuku.
It was then that Izuku had another piece of information suddenly make itself known to him, just like how he knew what card he had drawn, and what rank everyone was. The knowledge of what counted to accomplish a card. Stone Conquest. Relatively simple. It required triumph and victory, with some form of spoils or recognition afterwards. Patrol would count, for with payment as a hero acting as spoils. But so too could this fulfil the card, with one more action.
“Huh.” Izuku couldn't stop the mumble as he stuck out his hand for Tokoyami. The boy grabbed it, and Izuku pulled him to his feet. “Good match.” He said, recognizing that should probably take precedence. It would be rude otherwise.
“Thank you. Admittedly, I hadn't expected you to pull out actual lightning, along with accompanying thunder, but I suppose I really shouldn't have, seeing as you are constantly emitting electricity.” Tokoyami said. His hands moved up to rub at his eyes. “It’s absolutely sent Dark Shadow in for a nap for a while. I’ll have to find some way to counteract that.” The boy murmured to himself.
The two began to walk back to the rest of the class. Neither were truly injured enough to be incapable of doing so on their own. “To be honest, that was completely on the spot. I would've lost if you got into the alley, so I just… tried something. I’m glad it worked though. Another tool in my arsenal.” Izuku grinned. The card ran through his mind yet again, its requirements practically flashing in his thoughts. He frowned, and rubbed his forehead.
Tokoyami glanced at him, his eyes narrowing worriedly. “Is everything alright?” He asked, concerned. You were closer to the center of that than I am. Do you need medical?” That instinct was why Izuku was glad to have someone like Tokoyami in his class. The boy had just been beaten suddenly and likely disappointingly by Izuku, and yet he still had no hesitation in making sure he was okay.
“I’m fine, really. This isn't because of the attack. The card is just making itself known frequently right now.” Izuku said, waving off the boy with a reassuring smile.
Tokoyami tilted his head slightly. “Oh? May I ask how?”
Izuku shrugged. “Yeah, I guess. Essentially it’s saying that I’m close to resolving it if I just get one more thing.”
Tokoyami hummed. “It’s a stone conquest card, yes? Truly curious. What exactly would be required to fulfill it? I’m curious.”
Izuku scratched the back of his neck. “Essentially it would require you to become an ally of mine. It wouldn't be binding or anything, even The Game can't do that, but deferring to me, even temporarily, as a result of a military or personal triumph works for conquest. In this case, willingly doing so after a training exercise is enough for a stone card.”
Tokoyami blinked, but nodded. “Interesting.” He held a closed hand to his chin. He stopped, turning to Izuku, who stopped as well, confused. “Very well then. I have been thinking about the situation, and I've come to the conclusion you are someone whom I can trust. I already have, and the game, while worrying, I’ve realized should not change that.” He then lowered himself to a knee, his left arm tucked behind his back, and his right arm held in front of him, his elbow propped on his knees. His head was bowed downwards, and his eyes were closed, reminiscent of a knight in medieval stories. “I have faith in your decisions and values. I apologize for doubting you yesterday, but I have made up my mind. You are someone who I would likely follow even without The Game, albeit in a different manner. If my pledge to aid you alleviates a burden from you, then I shall do so. I shall be your ally, your sword. All I ask is that you wield me well.”
Izuku froze. “You…” Izuku gaped at Tokoyami. “Wh-why?” He asked.
Tokoyami opened his eyes and looked up, though he didn't move otherwise. “Because you have proven yourself among the best of us. Even at your worst, I believe you will be better than most, and that belief is enough for me to pledge myself to you.” The boy said, his conviction rivaling Shouji’s even through his refined and performative words.
Izuku took a deep breath. He calmed down from the shock of the situation, and took a moment. Tokoyami waited patiently. This was no different from Shouji, Momo, and Todoroki. They all believed in him, enough to offer their own aid to him. He would make sure that belief was not unfounded. Izuku looked down towards Tokoyami, a new sense of determination in him. He also understood Tokoyami better. The boy often seemed so refined, so unflappable in the face of obstacles, that much like Shouji, many of the class forgot they were still the same age as the rest of them.
But Tokoyami was. Just as Izuku was still somewhat socially awkward, and he had his notebooks, his analysis, and his All Might merch, Tokoyami had his own hobbies and obsessions. This was one way of expressing it, like his mumbles. He had always wished that someone would engage with him when he mumbled, because the intent was not to speak where others could not hear him, but rather to simply speak his mind quickly. So he would do that for Tokoyami. The boy used grandiose, and elegant words, things which despite the situation evoked a sense of wonder into the situation that was not there. It made things seem more impactful in some ways.
“You seek to pledge yourself into my service, but do you recognize what this means?” Izuku began quietly, unsure of the words and the tone, but trying. He could see as Tokoyami’s eyes widened slightly. “I have been given a duty with a dark and storied path. My intentions remain the same, and yet my actions must change as The Game forces my hand. By pledging yourself to me, you swear that despite this, despite the dangers, and hardships our future may hold, that you will remain by my side, even when there comes a time where you may not wish to do so. If this is truly the path you desire, I will not reject your aid, but I must ask for your surety first. It is my duty as a potential lord to watch out for those in my service, even before you have entered such.”
The words were unfamiliar, but as he spoke, they came easier and easier. It may not have been the same darker, brooding and mysterious tone that Tokoyami spoke in, one with an almost mystical energy, but that was not the tone the boy himself had spoken in just moments ago. No, this was as Izuku had said in his final sentence. This was a Lord, speaking to a knight or warrior who intended to enter into his service. This was what Tokoyami wanted, and Izuku could see it plainly from the joy sparkling in the other’s eyes. “I am sure. I would have no other claim my sword as their own, claim my strength as their own. Only you. So yes. If you shall have me, I am in your service.”
Instantly, Izuku could feel a rush of energy shoot through him. The conquest card hummed on the edge of his consciousness, the knowledge that it was complete humming pleasantly in his head. It was overwhelming for all of a single moment before it pulled back to a quieter presence. Izuku held his hand out to the boy. “Then I shall accept you, my knight.” He said quietly, a grin on his face. Tokoyami was right. This was fun. “We really should be getting back to the class though.” He admitted quietly, once Tokoyami was back to his feet.
The boy nodded. “Indeed.” He said quietly, as they began their walk again. “Thank you for indulging me.” He said after a moment. “Not many understand why I speak the way I do, and fewer still make the effort to do the same. You doing so, you recognizing my desires for that moment and going along with it are part of why I believe in you so much.” Tokoyami’s eyes sparkled with joy still. “Thank you.”
Izuku lightly tapped his shoulder against Tokoyami. “More people should. It was fun.” He admitted and with that, the boy seemed to relax into a comfortable walk as they made their way back to the class.
It didn't take long to reach them, having already been most of the way back before Tokoyami’s declaration. As they walked back into the training area they were greeted by the class. Many of them were excited, seeing the new move Izuku had managed.
“That was impressive!” Yaoyorozu said. “How long have you been working on that?” She asked, intrigued.
Izuku blinked. “Uh… I kinda… haven't?” He managed.
The class froze. “What?” Kaminari murmured. “What do you mean you haven't?”
“I… Came up with it then? If Tokoyami had gotten to the Shadows it would've been difficult to recover. Dark Shadow would have gained energy faster than I could harm her, and with how narrow they were, Tokoyami was basically impossible to reach until Dark Shadow was out of the way.” Izuku began to explain. “I had to do something, otherwise I would lose. So when I saw my lightning, it gave me an idea. It managed to work out well, and gave me the upper hand. I’ll have to keep working on it, but it’s useful.”
The class all appeared to have different levels of shock, and many of them appeared to be about to speak before All Might spoke up. “As impressive as Young Midoriya’s feat was, you have all day to hound him about it. Right now, we must keep going with our training. Hagakure and Sero, you’re up.” The man said calmly, snapping the class out of it.
As the rest of the class gathered, Izuku looked at how they were grouped. Todoroki hadn't returned to pay attention to the screens yet, standing closer to Izuku than any of the rest of the group. Tokoyami stayed by his side as well. Izuku’s instinct was to go to his friends, Uraraka, Iida, and Tsuyu. But he remembered the fear Tsuyu had felt, and knew she wasn't over it. He knew that Iida was still trying to reconcile this. That wasn't an option. So he continued to move his eyes across the group, and saw Shouji, a few steps back from the side of the group. The boy turned for just a second, a small glance at Izuku, but it was enough for him to make up his mind.
Izuku walked over to him, with Todoroki and Tokoyami following, the heterochromatic boy sending a curious glance to their avian classmate. There feet were far from silent, but they drew only a few glances, Yaoyorozu being one of them. She stepped back from her place, joining up with Shouji. She sent a small smile Izuku’s way, before she turned her attention back to the screens once the three of them reached her and Shouji. The rest of their group did the same, Izuku thankful that he could feel the lack of tension around him, so much different from homeroom earlier.
He had been made to feel like a threat. A problem, which must be carefully handled, as if he could go off at any time. Izuku had understood, he had accepted that some weariness may linger for a few days. It made sense. But understanding and enjoying it we're two different things. Here, around this small group of four others, he finally felt that weight lift off of him. With everyone else’s attention on something else, other than these four, who seemed to have nothing but trust in him, it was like he could have a moment to relax.
Tokoyami nudged him with his elbow. Izuku turned to look at the boy for a moment curiously. “Your card is complete, yes? Have you broken it yet?” He asked quietly.
Izuku blinked, and realized he hadn't. The card appeared in his hand, a crack running through the center of it which glowed a dim golden color. He held the card out to Tokoyami. “You helped fulfill it. You want to help break it?” He asked.
Tokoyami nodded, and he reached out, taking the top half of the card between his fingers. Shouji, Yaoyorozu, and Todoroki had all turned to watch. The boys both bent their halves down, and the crack spread, before the card snapped in half with a soft golden glow. The two halves of the now broken card began to crumble into dust, which also disappeared into nothing as they floated through the air. Izuku felt a sense of satisfaction and calm course through him, through the connection he now had to The Game. Judging from Tokoyami’s wide eyes, the boy also felt it, at least partially.
The rest of their small group watched in amazement at the action. It was then that Izuku felt the nudge to draw another card. In his palm, the box holding the game appeared. He pulled open the game, far calmer this time than he had been before. He reached his hand in, and drew out his next card. Cold metal met his fingers, and he drew it out of the box, which disappeared after a moment. A reflective brownish yellow color made up the card. He flipped it over and looked at the image depicted on its surface. A man, kneeling on the ground, hands held out in front of him as gold coins fell into them. He glanced up at the group, who were no doubt curious. They didn't have the wisdom coming to bear in his mind, telling them what the card was, so he would have to tell them. “A Bronze Extravagance card.” He said quietly.
Yaoyorozu's eyes widened, and her smile grew slightly. “Oh!” She said almost excitedly. “I can help with that!” She reminded Izuku. It was clear she didn't simply feel obligated to offer her assistance, but rather wanted to do so. “What exactly would be needed to complete the card?”
Izuku pursed his lips a bit. He didn't know. He looked back down at the card and focused on it. 12 days, 16 hours, 34 minutes, and 48 seconds. His eyes widened for a moment. Distantly his mind recognized that it was almost exactly the amount of time he would have if his estimations for the remaining time on his first card were added to the default 7 days. Bronze Extravagance, requiring some form of expensive purchase, experience, or donation. Purchases made for other people increased the effectiveness of the purchase.
‘Doing something for everyone else then.’ He thought to himself. ‘But does spending Yaoyorozu’s money count?’ He questioned in his mind. He was answered back by a slight warm feeling, similar to the sensation at the end of his fight with Tokoyami, but weaker. Telling him it would. He thought for a moment, trying to figure out something that wasn't wasteful, but that would be appreciated by the people he gave things to. ‘An expensive dinner maybe? Myself, Todoroki, Shouji, Yaoyorozu, and Tokoyami?’ The feeling was weaker, as if saying close, but not quite. ‘One more then?’ It hummed again, signifying he was correct.
Izuku looked up, and realized that Yaoyorozu was watching him, slightly concerned, which was fairly justifiable considering he hadn't responded for a while. “Sorry!” He said quickly. “I was trying to figure out the answer. The cards can somewhat tell me whether something would fulfill the card, so I was proving it for details. A fancy dinner reservation for 6 people should be enough to do it. I was thinking you obviously, me, Todoroki, Shouji, and Tokoyami?” He glanced at them. “If you guys want to come obviously.” They all nodded though, so he continued on. “I’ll have to figure out who else we should invite. If you have anyone you’d like to bring though, let me know.”
Yaoyorozu smiled. “Oh I can't wait! It’s been quite a while since I’ve been able to be in high society!” Realizing how that sounded, she blushed. “Obviously I enjoy the dorms and the class, but it’s all very unfamiliar.” She explained. “I'm used to those types of dinners far more. It will be wonderful to show you all this side of things, just as you all have been showing me the other side!” She stopped, and then frowned slightly. “Ordinarily, I would suggest Jirou, as she is one of my best friends, but perhaps that’s not the best choice just yet. I believe she’ll come around, but she’s worried about The Game. Many of our class are I suppose…”
Izuku smiled softly at her. “I get it, don't worry. And hey,” His smile turned into a teasing grin, feeling more comfortable with this group than he had in a while, able to step out of his shell more. “You can always take her somewhere fancy any other time. Wine and Dine her.”
Momo’s face lit up red, and she shot a worried glance at the aforementioned violet haired girl, but let out a sigh of relief when Jirou hadn't reacted whatsoever. She was too close to the cheering Kaminari and Kirishima to hear their quiet mumbles, even with her enhanced hearing. “I-Um… well…” The heiress stammered. She hung her head and placed her face in her palms. “Am I really that obvious?” She moaned into her hands.
Shouji chuckled, a deep, rumbling noise, coming from his real mouth. “Not to everyone. You’ve done a good job hiding from her. Which inevitably means you’re worse at hiding it from everyone else.”
Todoroki and Tokoyami both let out their own quiet chuckles at the situation. Momo lifted her head up, and glared at Izuku in faux anger. “Incorrigible.” She said, pointing at him, which only prompted more laughs. After a moment, she let the look slip off of her face, replaced by a soft smile. “I’m very excited. I’ll make the reservations. Ideally, I should be able to get them for tomorrow. Does that work for you all?” They all gave their agreement, and she continued. “I’ll try and figure out anyone who might be interested, but I’m not sure how successful I’ll be. I’ll let you know beforehand.”
Izuku smiled at her. “Thank you.” He said, before turning to glance at the others. “If any of you have any ideas as well, please let me know.”

It took Izuku a while to try and figure out who exactly he wanted to take with him. Ordinarily, the choice would have been fairly easy. He could've picked any one of his friends or classmates, and been happy with it. But they were still worried about The Game. They needed time, he supposed. He didn't blame them, but it meant that the choice for people who he wanted to invite, and for who would actually be able to enjoy it was small.
Eventually though, he had come up with two ideas. Of all of the people in the class, Izuku suspected that Uraraka was the person who would most appreciate the experience. It wasn't mentioned often, but he still remembered the conversation before the sports festival on why she wanted to be a hero. A fancy dinner, like the one that they would be going to, wasn't likely to be something she got to experience, and as one of his first friends, he wanted to allow her to do so.
On the off chance that she did decline, Tetsutetsu was someone he could likely count on to accept. The boy had been very supportive of Izuku before, and the only reason Izuku hadn't already extended the invite was simply because he felt he should at least ask Uraraka first. He also wasn't sure if it was exactly the silver haired boy’s scene per say, though that was less of a problem.
All of that brought him here. A little bit before most of the class usually came down to get something to eat, that same day. Izuku was outside of Uraraka’s door, about to knock to ask her if she wanted to join them tomorrow. He took a deep breath, and lightly knocked. “Coming!” He heard her call from through the door, and after a moment, it pulled open to show her in her usual casual clothes. Her eyes widened as she saw him. “Oh Deku! What are you doing here? Did you need something?” Izuku relaxed a bit. Uraraka hadn't been one of the class afraid of him.
“Uh, not necessarily. I just wanted to ask you something.” Izuku said. Uraraka gave him a gesture to continue. “So, I actually completed my first card earlier today, during my fight with Tokoyami. I got my second one, and it’s an Extravagance party. The best way to complete that, at least that I’ve found, is to have dinner at a fancy restaurant.” Uraraka’s eyes widened, and though Izuku didn't notice, in his thoughts as he was, her cheeks began to tinge pink. “I figured that I would ask you. I know you didn't say that you wanted to help with the cards, and if you say no, that’s perfectly fine, but I thought I should ask you before finding someone else.” Izuku said.
Uraraka stared at him for a moment. “U-um… You want to invite me to a fancy dinner?” She confirmed, and Izuku nodded. “When?”
“It would be tomorrow night. Yaoyorozu already has the reservations and okayed it with principal Nezu.” Izuku explained.
Uraraka blinked. “Oh… Who… Who else would be going?” She said, much quieter than her previous tone, seemingly realizing something.
“Yaoyorozu is, seeing as she’s the one who offered to pay for it. Shouji, Tokoyami and Todoroki have all offered to help me with The Game, if I need it, so this is a way to show them I appreciate it. And the card needs 6 people, so I was hoping that would be you.” Izuku smiled kindly at her, and Uraraka let out a soft sigh, her lips tilting back into a smile slightly. She couldn't really be upset at him. It was her own fault for misunderstanding. Besides, the other four people going were Shouji and Tokoyami, as well as Momo and Todoroki. Though they wouldn't be alone, maybe her original assumptions of what this was weren't entirely wrong…
Uraraka nodded. “I’d be happy to go.” She said softly. “What time tomorrow, and any idea where?”
“The reservation is for 6 o’clock, though Yaoyorozu has suggested we make a day of it.” Izuku grinned. “She seems really excited about this. According to her, she wants to share her experiences with us, just as we've been doing with her.” That brought Uraraka a smile as well. “So I’ll have to ask to double check, but we may be heading out earlier and getting back later, seeing as Principal Nezu’s given us until 12 o'clock for curfew. I don't remember the exact name of the restaurant, but I looked it up and it’s a fairly well known Kaiseki place.”
Uraraka’s eyes widened. “That’s gotta be expensive, no? You said Yaoyorozu is paying for it? Is she fine with that?” She asked worriedly.
Izuku smiled at her. “That’s… kinda the whole point, remember? Extravagance card and all.”
Uraraka blushed at the reminder. “Oh, yeah…” she mumbled. “I forgot about that.” She looked back up and smiled again. “Alright then. If you’re sure, I’d be more than happy to go!” She said happily. “Oh, but wait!” She corrected suddenly. “I don't have fancy clothes for something like that!”
Izuku nodded. “I didn't either. Momo’s apparently got it covered. When you get a moment, she told me to tell you to head over to her room at some point tonight so she can make you something.” He smiled again. “She seemed really excited about that too.”
“Alright then! Lemme go do that now!” She said excitedly, stepping forwards. Izuku stepped back to allow her to exit her room. She shut the door behind her, before turning back to Izuku, and giving him a smile. “Thanks for asking.” She said softly, before turning to walk towards the stairs up to Yaoyorozu’s room.
-(o)-
It was Tuesday. Classes had just let out for the day, and while most of the students of UA didn't treat it as any different than usual, a group of six were eagerly awaiting what came next. Yaoyorozu had already delivered each of them their clothes, having taken a large amount of delight at designing them. She was absolutely the member of the group most excited for the trip, although Uraraka came in a close second.
It was almost three hours before their reservation, and around when Yaoyorozu had planned for them to leave. Unfortunately, they wouldn't be able to do their homework today, but their teachers didn't assign anything due overnight, and the homework already due the next day was already completed by all of the members. The benefits of having a fairly studious group, Izuku supposed.
Preparing in his room, Izuku slowly put on the suit that Yaoyorozu had made. Apparently she enjoyed making clothes, and while she was normally adverse to creating things such as this, she was technically allowed to do so, and her excitement overcame her restraint. For him, she had decided on a simple black suit, with a white dress shirt, and dark green tie, which matched his hair. It wasn't anything overly fancy, but It suited him well. He also attempted to clean up his hair as best as he could, making it appear much more intentionally messy, rather than the previous unmitigated chaos, while still remaining similar to his usual style.
It felt odd, at first, putting this on. The last time he had done so had been at I-Island, and he would admit that his outfit then had been much worse than this one. For a moment, he simply stared at his reflection. Now, more than it had so far, Izuku truly felt like The Sultan’s Subject. It wasn't the bad feeling he had originally believed it would be. Now, he felt as if he had a chance to do something good. Extravagance was so easily satisfied by wasting money on greedy things. But Izuku would not be that person. His friends, those who stood by him would find their kindness returned. He was to be important, just as any Subject would be, but Izuku’s dreams and goals stretched so far beyond the regular. He would not dream to just survive. He would thrive.
He left his room, heading down the hall, towards the elevators. Just as he was about to turn the corner, he heard the door shut behind him, and turned to see Tokoyami exiting his room. The boy was dressed similarly to Izuku, with another black suit, and a white dress shirt. Rather than a tie however, Tokoyami had a short red scarf tied loosely around his neck. He had a black vest underneath his jacket, which hung over his right shoulder with Dark Shadow holding it in place. The boy looked no less well dressed, but it certainly fit his almost poetic style he usually wore. “Midoriya.” The boy greeted. “Yaoyorozu certainly chose well for you.”
Izuku smiled. “You as well. She did a good job of keeping your style. You certainly stand out, but in an eye-catching way. It looks good.” He complimented.
Tokoyami stood up a little straighter, and his feathers almost seemed to stick out a slight bit. If Izuku had to describe it, he would say the boy was preening. “I-Um…” Tokoyami stuttered. “Thank you.” He said quietly. “I’m certainly glad. I’ve worn suits before, but none of them felt quite like me before this.”
“And Yaoyorozu made the suit for me to have the jacket!” Dark Shadow chirped, obviously excited. “She’s so nice!”
Izuku laughed at that. “That’s definitely good!” Izuku agreed. “You’ll make sure to behave for Tokoyami, right?” He asked kindly.
Dark Shadow nodded passionately. “Yup! Fumi’s really excited about this, so I’ll be careful!” The shade tilted her head slightly. “Can I try some of the food though?” She asked curiously. “I don't need to eat, but I can still taste some things.”
Izuku looked to Tokoyami, who had no negative reaction, before turning back to Dark Shadow. “I think that’s more than doable. Yaoyorozu mentioned we’ll have a private booth as well, so you won't have to hide either so long as you’re good.” He pointed out.
“She’ll be on her best behavior.” Tokoyami assured Izuku, sending Dark Shadow a side eye. “Shall we meet our companions?” He asked, turning back to Izuku, who nodded.
Both of them took the stairs, rather than the elevator, getting used to moving in their new clothes, as they only had to go down one floor. As they came out from the side hall, to the center common room, they found they were the first down, and waited near the kitchen Island for the rest of their group. They weren't alone, with Kaminari, Kirishima, Sero, and Jirou all there as well, sitting around one of the TV’s with Sero and Kirishima playing Hero Smash. “Woah!” Kaminari said, turning around to look at them. “What’s with the fancy clothes?” He asked, eyes wide.
Izuku blushed slightly, as Kirishima paused the game, and all of the others also turned to look at them. “I’m going to be completing one of my cards. Extravagance.” He paused, before continuing when they didn't look upset. “So myself, Tokoyami, Todoroki, Shouji, Yaoyorozu, and Uraraka have a dinner reservation at a Kaiseki restaurant tonight.”
Had Izuku not already been looking at her, he likely would've missed the slightly disappointed expression that came across Jirou’s face for a moment, before she smoothed it back out. He’d have to let Yaoyorozu know to ask Jirou soon. “Man, that’s really cool!” Kaminari said. “And you definitely rock this suit better than the one at I-Island” Kaminari pointed out, before realizing how that could sound, and hastily attempted to course correct. “Not that your outfit at I-Island was bad just tha-” Jirou cut him off by covering his mouth.
“It looks good Green.” She said plainly, summing up Kaminari’s thoughts. “You as well Poe.”
Footsteps echoed from the back of the building, and all six of them turned to face the new additions to the conversation. The rest of their party had arrived. Shouji caught Izuku’s eye first, simply due to his size, and the uniqueness of his outfit. The boy’s solid and anchoring demeanor remained strong through his clothes. A black cloak draped loosely over his shoulders, showing a dark gray vest and pants, with a black dress shirt. His usual light blue facemask had been replaced by a solid black one that almost seemed to blend into his dress shirt. A silver chain reaching across him, connecting the two sides of the massive cloak matched his hair color, along with a few decorative fastenings.
Yaoyorozu stood next to him, practically beaming with joy. She had her hair down, as opposed to her usual spiky ponytail, and her dress, dark red just like her costume, flowed downwards like water rather than silk. A small gap ran up the left side of the dress to her lower thigh, showing the heels she wore, giving her a few extra inches of height, pushing her slightly over Todoroki, and making her the second tallest of the group. It was clear she was in her element, more than anything else, and she held herself with a confidence and calm that Izuku had never seen before.
Todoroki’s suit, almost pure white, like snow, caught his eye next. The boy seemed calm, not quite enjoying this as much as Yaoyorozu, but clearly far more familiar with this than any of the rest of them. It was similar to his I-Island suit, but he had a dark red dress shirt which matched his hair, and his collar and tie were black. He smiled softly at Izuku as they met each other's eyes, his suit reflecting himself, a cold demeanor, with a hidden warmth. He gave out an aura of indifference to everything except their group, as if they weren't worth the attention. Izuku let his lingering tensions out, the boy’s presence being a calming anchor to him.
And then Uraraka stepped out from behind the considerably taller members of the class. She was grinning nervously, but clearly excited about this. She wore a shorter, dark blue dress that began just below her shoulders, and ended just above her knees, with a frilled white top section, and a mesh pattern running down the sides, and black leggings. The skirt of it was similar to her dress at I-Island, though less structured and poofy, allowing it to float more freely. She seemed to almost bounce on her feet, obviously looking forward to the rest of the day.
Izuku stared at them all in shock. Everyone except for Shouji he had seen at I-Island, but their outfits blew the ones they had worn them out of the water. “U-uh…” He stuttered, before clearing his throat. “You all look really, really good.” He managed to say. To his side, he saw Tokoyami nod, eyes wide as well.
Uraraka’s cheeks burned pink, and Yaoyorozu only seemed to light up even more. She giggled slightly. “Why thank you kind sir.” The heiress joked. “Now, it’s about time we head out, we do have a train to catch after all.”
Izuku shook his head slightly, and nodded. “We’ll be in your care then.” Izuku said, pushing himself off of the counter he had been leaning against. He turned to the four who were watching with wide eyes. “See you all later.” He said, smiling.
Kirishima blinked, before he nodded. “Yeah, see you guys! Hope you have fun!” He said, waving to them as they left the dorms, ready for the night ahead.
Notes:
Hello everyone! Sorry it took so long to get this chapter out! I feel like I'm saying that often, so I apologize. I do intend to speed up my updates, but we'll see how accurate that statement is in time.
Anyways, I hope you all enjoyed this chapter so far! Originally this was also going to include the dinner itself and even more, because I had actually been worried that what I had planned wouldn't be enough. I was... very wrong, as only the first two sections were almost 8k words, and my full idea would've equated to close to double that, which I felt would've taken even longer to get out.
So, we have Tokoyami swearing himself into service of Izuku, Izuku gaining a new power, and the second card! Bronze Extravagance! It's the perfect excuse for them all to dress up all fancy and have a formal dinner. For those who don't know kaiseki is a form of high end dining in Japan. It's both a type of meal, and a type of culinary art, which makes it perfect for this purpose in my mind, as well as just being interesting!
Next up, Uraraka! She very clearly wants this to be a date with Izuku, but even if it isn't, she's just happy to be invited to something fancy like this. It's a bit of an interesting scenario, because as you've no doubt seen in this chapter and the last, she's definitely not the only one with some form of feelings for Izuku, though she is much more obvious about them. She's going to be fairly important as well as the rest of the main group in the coming chapters!
The outfits are something I really liked creating! Thanks to Memoryhead in the discord for helping me really anchor my ideas for them, and letting me bounce ideas off of them! I had a lot of fun making them, and fitting both their colors as well as individual styles! Tokoyami's outfit in particular is one I really like the idea of, so hopefully I did it justice lol.
Loreweaver_Vex and Memoryhead have also gotten their own major sections for their own fics, so that's something to check out! It's also just a fun place to hang out and chat! If you're interested, you can join with this Discord Link
With that being said, I hope to see some of you in the discord, but if not, then I will see you in the next chapter!
