Work Text:
Luna slipped out of the room while everyone watched Neville enter the passage to follow the little blond girl. She went around the corner and found Headmaster Snape coming out of his office. “I think it’s time, sir.”
“Yes, it is. My end is coming near, and the weapon is ready. You will know when.” He gazed into her. “Thank you.”
She gave him a serene smile as she patted her chest where the warm pendant stayed hidden after he gave it to her upon her return to the castle. It wasn’t easy to get it without some help from one of the Hogwarts house elves. “Good night, sir.”
“You too.” He dipped his head. “You must return to the room quickly.”
“Okay.” She grew serious as she went back to the Room of Requirement just in time to see Harry, Hermione and Ron join the fray. She observed their demeanour as she thought back to when they met about the weapon with a friend named Captain Jack Harkness.
~~~
Luna showed up at the address where she was supposed to join her professor for a meeting of sorts. She had lied to her father about where she was going. The blond witch doubted that he would let her go if he knew the truth. She gazed at the glass pyramid-shaped building and tilted her head. “Interesting. It’s underground.”
A man showed up out of the blue to her left. “How did you know that?”
“Oh, hello, you must be Captain Jack Harkness.” She smiled at him as his eyes widened.
“How?” A male in his late thirties dressed in old wartime fare.
“Well, you are definitely not my professor.” Luna’s luminescent eyes looked up at him.
“Oh, is Professor Dumbledore meeting us here?” He perked up but got puzzled by her sad face.
“Sorry to disappoint you, Captain Harkness, but I’m the professor she’s waiting for.” The low voice spoke behind him.
Jack turned to see a sallow male with stringy black hair dressed in black. “Who are you?” He eyed him carefully.
“This is Professor Snape, but something tells me he would like us to talk in private, sir.” Luna gravely answered as he dipped in agreement. “Right, professor?”
“Right, this way.” Jack spun around and caused Severus to shake his head at the twirling of his overcoat. He led them downstairs into Torchwood and showed them into the conference room. “Have a seat.”
The two wizards sat down on one side, and Jack took the other. They stared at each other momentarily.
“I’m assuming that you needed me for some reason, sir. I know you didn’t mean to do what you did to Headmaster Dumbledore.”
“What did you do to Albus?” Jack snapped to attention and was tempted to pull out his gun.
Severus gave him a level stare. “Albus gave me a direct order to kill him if it was to protect one of the students from getting his soul ripped for murder.”
“You did that for Draco, didn’t you?” She tilted her head.
He sputtered in surprise. “How?”
“Draco wasn’t himself this year, don’t you agree?” She grimly smiled. “One would assume that you would protect one of your own.”
“Don’t assume anything, little girl.” He snapped.
“Yet, you called me to this meeting.” She smirked as she sat back.
“Ah. I’m going to believe that you need my help for something.” Jack interjected.
“Yes. I am a double spy for Albus, and he told me that he wanted you two to steal something before the next battle at the school next year.” Severus sighed. “I’ll be waiting nearby so I can take it to the school to set it up for that battle.”
“You want me to steal something with a schoolgirl?” Jack arched his brow.
“Luna is no ordinary schoolgirl. She’s been to this area of the Ministry last year, and she’ll know exactly what we need to combat the dark creatures.”
“I see.” Jack gave her a good lookover. “What’s so special about you?”
“I see you have some Wrackspurts floating around your head, Jack.” Luna gazed at him. “I partook in a battle against 12 other Death Eaters, and I kept three of my mates alive during it when they were incapacitated.”
“Death Eaters?” Jack sounded confused.
“That’s the other group in this war.” Severus sighed. “Just please meet her at the Ministry and steal the object in hand before bringing it to me.”
“Very well.” Jack sat back as he pondered. “How soon?”
“Soon because I need time to put wards around it so the other Death Eaters don’t see it until it's time.” He replied. “Plus, I want Luna to enjoy the Weasley wedding without any worries.”
“Oh, yes. It should be a lovely affair.” Luna clapped her hands happily.
“Stop that.” Her professor gave her a sharp look.
“Sorry.” She settled down in her seat.
“When’s the wedding?” Jack intervened.
“August first.”
“OY! That’s two weeks from now.”
Severus gave him a level stare before arching his brow. “Is that going to be a problem?”
“No.” Jack turned to Luna. “When would it be best to do this?”
“This weekend. My father would be distracted by his printing press, and the Ministry should be mostly empty, correct, sir?” She tilted her head at Severus.
“Yes, and I’ll meet you at the King’s Cross Station to take it from you,” Severus replied. “Just meet me there at midnight on Sunday.”
~~~
“Luna.” Ginny shook her arm. “We need your help getting into the Ravenclaw dormitory.”
“Oh.” She blinked before refocusing to see Harry looking at her hopefully. “Of course. We will need to be careful out there.”
“Luna and I will go and take care of this, and I’ll meet you two back here.” He glanced at the other two.
“Brilliant.” Hermione nodded as she watched them leave.
Harry and Luna walked to the Ravenclaw Tower and slipped inside. They looked at the tiara on Rowena Ravenclaw’s statue. Alecto Carrow soon attacked them, but Luna got the better of her with a silent stunner.
“Well done, Luna.” Harry praised her and then covered them both when they heard footsteps running.
Luna watched Amycus blame the students for attacking Alecto, and McGonagall defended them, which garnered a spit from him. She should have been surprised that Harry had exposed himself to defend his Head of House, but she wasn’t.
“I need to find Hermione and Ron because I know where I’ve seen it.” Harry looked seriously at her.
“Okay. Let’s go back and do what we need to do.” Luna dipped her head at Severus as he rounded the corner. “It’s almost time.”
“What is the meaning of this, Minerva?” He made a subtle nod back to her. “Where is Potter?”
“I’m not telling you if he’s here.” Minerva stood tall as they left them.
They made haste to the Room of Requirement, but Harry was confused as to where they had disappeared, even though Ginny had told him. He left the room, leaving Luna to talk to the others.
“Are the Dementors still here?” Luna airily asked.
They gave her a confused look because they had been swirling around the castle for days. “Yes, Luna.”
“Good.” She gave them a serene look.
They gave her a wide berth as she zoned out again.
~~~
Jack met Luna wearing dark clothes underneath his wool overcoat. He quirked his brow at her attire. “That’s an interesting outfit.”
“It’s the one I wore the last time I was there, and I came out scathless.” She seriously replied. “Plus, they all ignore me.”
Jack sighed at her words before adjusting his jacket. “Shall we?”
“Yes, into the phone booth, please.” She opened it and waved him in before shutting it behind her. “Please type in 62442 into the number board.”
Jack did as she instructed and was surprised to feel the booth move downward. “How did you know that?”
“Oh, I just asked Harry about his time here, and he said that the numbers spelt out the word ‘magic.’ ” She smiled serenely, but when the lift stopped, she grew focused and slipped out her wand. “Please stay behind me at first.”
“Lead the way.”
She carefully opened the door and slipped out to make sure they didn’t garner any attention from the lift. She was surprised that there wasn’t anyone coming. Luna opened the door and let him out. “Still be on your guard. They could be hiding.”
“This is true.” Jack quietly shut the door and followed her across what looked like an Atrium. “I’m surprised that there aren’t any guards around?” He inquired as they passed a guard window.
“Me, too.” The blond’s eyes darted around the large room. “We need to go through this golden gate to find the lift.”
He heard something move behind the golden grill and pulled her away from it. “Watch out.” A fiery red light passed through and missed them.
She flicked her wand a few times, and they heard a clatter on the floor. She paused a few moments before opening the gate and found a young male on the floor. Luna narrowed her eyes at the mask next to him. “Oh, Eddie. Incarcerous.”
“You know this bloke?” Jack joined her as he watched her tie the young man up.
“Yes, he was in my house at school. His name is Eddie Carmichael.” She sighed. “Wingardium Leviosa.” She moved him to the side before opening one of the lifts for them.
“How far is it?” He asked and was surprised that it went only one floor down. ‘That was quick.”
“It was.” She nodded as she glanced around before going out. “Let’s hurry, though, because we are slightly behind.”
He glanced at his watch and realised that they had forty minutes to find it and meet their liaison. He groaned when he saw multiple doors. “How are we going to find this thing?”
“Just follow me.” Luna walked to the main door and glanced around to see if there were any telltale signs from the last time she was there. And there was a faint mark on some of the doors. “Excellent.” She clapped.
“Luna?” Jack looked down at her. “What are we going to do?”
“We are going to skip these rooms,” she pointed to certain doors. “They don’t have what we will need even though your arm seems attracted to one of them.” She arched her brow.
He glanced down at his time manipulator. “Oh. Do you have time machines?”
“No, but we did have time turners, but they got destroyed last year.” She shook her head.
“Gotcha.” He nodded. “Let’s see what this door has.” He opened one, and it was just an office.
“No. Not that one.” Luna jerked her head.
“Okay.” He shut the door, went to the next door, and opened it, which was filled with things. “Brilliant.”
“Yes.” She perked up and darted into the room. She looked around, and her eyes went wide when she saw a large what looked like a reflector. “Perfect.”
“That thing?” He looked confused at her as the area started to get chilly. “What the?”
“Yes, this thing, and I’ll show you why.” Luna turned to see that two dementors were coming their way.
“I can’t see them, but I can feel their cold and starting to affect my memories.” He started to hunch over.
“Please sit in that chair and watch what we are going to do with the reflector,” Luna instructed him. “But shield your eyes.”
He quickly got out of her way and squinted as she raised her wand, yelling, “EXPECTO PATRONUM!” His eyes popped for a moment to see a hare fly out of her wand and hit the large reflector. When the hare hit the object, it grew in size, bounced back past them and killed the two dementors.
“Perfect.” She raised her wand again. “Accio reflector.”
The reflector came down, and Jack caught it for her so it wouldn’t hurt her. He gave it to Luna. “That was brilliant, but we best be going.”
“Hmm. Yes, we better. I’m sure Eddie’s raised the alarm already.”
They walked out of the room to find themselves surrounded by people wearing black robes and masks.
“Death Eaters!”
“Oh, Bloody hell,” Jack grumbled. “This is more work than my normal missions, and I have a date with the Doctor.”
“You again!” Bellatrix screeched. “Don’t you know to stay out of the Ministry, Miss Lovegood?”
“No. I don’t, Madame Lestrange.” She smiled serenely. “Professor Dumbledore sent us.”
“That’s impossible!” She started throwing a fit.
Jack rolled his eyes. “Nothing is impossible when it comes to Albus Dumbledore.” He pressed a couple of buttons on his watch before wrapping his arm around her waist. “Hold on, Luna.” He smirked broadly at them. “Sorry, we can’t stay long.” They flashed out of the room just as they started shooting spells at them, diving out of the way.
~~~
“Luna!”
She shook her head as she realised that she was daydreaming again. “I’m sorry. You need something.”
“Yes, they want us to clear out of the room. Plus, we need to talk strategy against his evil forces.” Neville chimed in. He looked at her, concerned. “Are you alright?”
“Yes, I’m splendid.” She beamed at him. “Let’s go because I do have a special surprise for the Dementors.”
They battled and fought against the Death Eaters and helped others as they made their way outside. It suddenly got colder for May. They gasped in horror to see Hermione, Ron and Harry struggling to make their patronus.
“Alright, which of us can make the patronus?” Luna inquired.
“Ernie and I can.” Seamus stepped forward.
“Excellent.” She raised her wand. “Tempus Fugit!” The spell went up to the Astronomy Tower and revealed a gigantic reflector on top. “Oh, he made it bigger. Brilliant.” She turned around, looking stern. “Listen to me. Send your patronus to the reflector, and it will become bigger than normal.”
“How do you know it will work?” Ernie rebutted.
“Because I got to test it before I stole it.” She snapped at him. “Now, Think happy!’
Luna, Ernie and Seamus stood shoulder to shoulder and aimed for the giant object. “EXPECTO PATRONUM!” Their patronuses of hare, boar, and fox shot out of their wands and ran to the reflector. The boys gasped as their eyes widened, and their charm tripled in size and ran amok towards the Dementors. It was enough to allow Harry to help them with his stag. The Dementors screamed from all the happiness hitting them, and most of them died. The ones that survived left over the Forbidden Forest.
The three of them cheered as they watched the other three disappear again. They resumed battling with the Death Eaters with renewed energy. They get startled by the announcement to halt the battle, and they all return to the great hall and start bringing in the dead.
Luna sat down in shock when she not only saw Fred lying there but felt her warm necklace go cold. “He’s dead.” She pulled out a necklace with a moonstone on it. It was no longer glowing. She quietly wept for the man as her mind drifted again.
~~~
“Mistress Lovegood?” A squeak broke through her study time at the library. She had taken over Hermione’s table to study. Madam Pince had made the library a sanctuary for the students and protected them from the mad Carrows.
She looked down to see a nervous house elf look up at her. “Yes?”
“I was instructed to give you this alone.” He held it up to her.
“Oh, thank you.” She took it from the house elf. “It is from the man upstairs?”
“Yes, Mistress.” It bobbled its head.
“Brilliant.” She flashed it a smile. “Go on before she catches you in here.”
The house elf popped out before Luna opened the small box. She gasped at the ornate moonstone necklace inside the box. She could feel the magic radiating off of it. She clasped it around her neck, and as she slipped it under her shirt, she noticed a little note inside.
Luna plucked it from the box and unfolded it to read his spiky handwriting.
Miss Lovegood,
Hold the pendant and repeat this Latin phrase so you can be connected to the ward as well.
“Tempus occultandi, donec tempus fugit”
Luna put down the parchment, pulled out her pendant, and held it in her hand as she muttered the spell that he had given her to repeat. She felt a slight surge of magic zing through her. She smiled as she put it back under her shirt before continuing to read the rest of the message.
If you ever need to reveal the surprise before I can reveal it, just point to the Astronomy Tower and say, ‘Tempus Fugit.’
Please burn this message when you get a chance to save us both from them.
Headmaster Snape.
She stuffed the message into her bag and finished her assignment before burning the message in the girls’ bathroom on the second floor with Myrtle watching out for the Death Eaters.
~~~
Luna snapped out when someone was tugging on her coat. “Come on, Luna! Something is happening outside.” Neville urged her to join him.
They all gasped when they saw Hagrid carry Harry out of the forest, but Luna saw a minor twitch on the body and knew he was finally going to defeat the man. She stayed close to Ginny to help her battle anyone during the final surge. It would be their luck that the two plus Hermione would be fighting Bellatrix Lestrange until Mrs Weasley took over. What a battle!
Then they all watched Harry explain to Riddle how he’s the true master of the Elder Wand, much to Riddle's chagrin. They both throw one last spell, and Riddle lost his wand as the killing curse hit him instead of Harry. Harry was victorious. She waited a beat and ran to him for hugs along with the other four that went with them to the Ministry two years ago. Then they got crushed by all the others that were happy that it was over.
When they finally pulled away, Luna pulled Harry aside for a moment. “Do you know where Snape is?”
“Yes. He’s in the Shrieking Shack. Why?” He narrowed his eyes.
“I just want to pay my respects to him without the crowd,” Luna softly pleaded.
“Of course. Just go under the Weeping Willow. Just hit the knob at the base of the tree.” Harry explained.
“Excellent.” Luna sadly beamed at him before leaving the Great Hall. She went out the broken doors and down the lawn towards the moving tree. She saw a long limb on the ground and used it to hit the knob, as Harry said. She slipped down and moved along the path to the shack. When Luna peeked through the hole, she gasped at him lying there.
She scrambled up into the room and checked to see if anyone was lurking before she knelt next to him. “Oh, Professor Snape.”
“Luna?”
She spun around with her wand, ready to cast if need be, but she sighed in relief when she saw Jack. “What are you doing here?”
“He’s dead, isn’t he?” Jack dipped his head.
“Yes, he is.” She started crying again. “But how did you know to come here?”
“Oh, I had my people keep a lookout for something odd in an area.” Jack gave her a smirk. “I think the really bright flash of light garnered their attention.” He moved down next to her. “Do we know how he died?”
Luna shook her head and gave him a good look over. “Judging by the bloody neck, I would say that the bad man’s snake got him.”
“That’s awful.” Jack sighed. “How are you?”
“I’m not hurt if that’s what you are asking.” She flashed him a grateful smile.
“What now?”
“Now, we rebuild the magical community, and I’ll pop in to see you from time to time?” She tilted her head.
“I would like that.” He smirked as they got up from the floor.
They came together and hugged each other heartily.
“Thank you for checking on me. The object worked beautifully.” She beamed.
“Brilliant.” He rubbed her arms. He glanced at his watch when it beeped at him. “I’m needed back in Cardiff.”
“Go. Save the world.” She hugged him again.
“See you soon, Luna.” Jack pressed a button, and he disappeared from the room.
“Yes, you will.” She sighed as she left the room to join the others and make arrangements for the professor’s removal from the shack.
