Stoic Heart Melts At The Scent Of Bamboo

Summary:

Liu Qingge always thought he’d stay unmated—even others agreed. Maybe it was for his best—how could he love anything else?
What was even worse—why did every time he saw his Shixiong he felt his heart pound loudly in his ears? Damn it!

Chapter 1: Unwanted Visit

Chapter Text

Liu Qingge only knew two things: sparring and honor.

He came from a noble family—and as an alpha, it was obvious that he held pure responsibility over both his family’s name, and as a soldier.

But the former never worked—no one caught his eye. It came to a point that his grandmother fainted just thinking that Liu Qingge would stay an unmated alpha forever.

It seemed that even his childhood friend that his parents tried to set him up with hadn’t caught his attention. It made everyone wonder: Was Liu Qingge capable of love?

Liu Qingge couldn’t care less—that never mattered.

Currently he was the fearsome war god, peak lord of Bai Zhan peak. What else was worth accomplishing now?

Being mated! Gah! Pointless anyway—he can barely differentiate the scent of various omega’s. They’re all the same. Whenever he goes out, they can’t help but unconsciously reach out to him, although all just to be outright rejected by Liu Qingge’s famous scowl and oblivious awareness.

Liu Qingge was sitting at his desk, scowling as he thought of the upcoming peak lord meeting. He dreaded them with everything he had. Sitting down for hours…making small talk…paying attention…participating…introductions…and even worse—Shen Qingqiu.

He and Qingqiu were always at odds—ever since the day they met. Shen Qingqiu was an omega who held the tongue of a snake, used dirty moves whenever they sparred —shameless! Although Liu Qingge was always taught to never hurt any omega, he just couldn’t help it when around Qingqiu.

Everyone knew the relationship between Shidi and Shixiong: Shen Qingqiu thought Liu Qingge was a brute, and Liu Qingge thought he was a backstabber in disguise.

Liu Qingge huffed as the peak lord of An Ding Peak arrived with the usual haul of material and furniture. Couldn’t they be any faster?

He never liked that omega—too wimpy. How did he even become a peak lord? Shameless.

Shang Qinghua chuckled nervously as some disciples from his peak left as they brought him to Liu Qingge’s studio. Liu Qingge grumbled to himself and sighed, stiffly looking at Shang Qinghua as he spoke, “…what? Why are you here?”

Shang Qinghua coughed as he cleared his throat, “…nothing, just passing by to visit a fellow shidi! So, it’s actually a few matters here and there...”

Shang Qinghua quickly scurried to sit at the table, motioning for Liu Qingge to join him. Liu Qingge grumbled more as he sat down, the table moving slightly as he sat down.

Shang Qinghua spoke, “…so, on my way to Bai Zhan peak, the forest west from here—Yelu woods—I heard some weird sounds—and then of course I felt some evil qi around the area…so…I was asking if you can deal with it.” Shang Qinghua trailed off.

Liu Qingge’s brows furrowed before speaking, “why?”

Shang Qinghua’s eyes widened in disbelief, before he used the ever annoying whining tone of his, “what do you mean ‘why?’ Liu-shidi! If you want your next load to come earlier, then make it a safe route where you’re Shixiong won’t get his arm taken on the way!”

Liu Qingge felt his patience run thin, so he begrudgingly nodded, “fine. I’ll clear it. If that’s all—leave.”

Shang Qinghua looked ahead as he added something more, “…so, before I leave—I have a question!

“...is there something happening between you and Shen-shixiong?”

Liu Qingge froze in place, his scowl deepening as he glared at Shang Qinghua, “…what do you mean? What is occurring between us?!”

Shang Qinghua seemed baffled at Liu Qingge’s words, “…what do you mean? I don’t know—that’s why I’m asking you!”

Liu Qingge leaned in closer, his gaze glaring holes into Shang Qinghua’s forehead, “…I don’t know. I’m asking you. Answer.”

Shang Qinghua found it hopeless, Liu Qingge was incorrigible and stupid! Of course he should have expected this!

Shang Qinghua pointed out, “…every time Shen-shixiong is near you—his scent isn’t as suppressed as usual! Don’t think I haven’t seen you bringing his fan back every time he drops it! Rings a bell? It seems like you’re smitten!”

Liu Qingge stood up, pushing his chair behind with a loud screech as he did, his glare cold, making small shivers run through Shang Qinghua’s spine.

Shang Qinghua immediately began to scurry away, “nice seeing you Liu-shidi! Hope our next talk isn’t so soon!”

Liu Qingge huffed as Shang Qinghua slammed the door in fear, leaving everything once more quiet as the way it always was.

Liu Qingge groaned as he thought about what Shang Qinghua said—it was shameless! Liu Qingge paced around the room in thought, he hated thinking too much, even worse—over Shen Qingqiu.

As the sun began to set, its bright rays turning into warm, orange hues over the sky, Liu Qingge made his mind and decided to slay those supposedly nefarious beasts in Yelu woods.

At least in that way, he could kill time, even better—forget whatever that wimpy omega dared say. Shameless.

In no universe would Liu Qingge ever dare think about Shen Qingqiu in that way!

Chapter 2: The Fan Deliverer Revealed

Chapter Text

Liu Qingge with Cheng Luan in hand patrolled the forest, the serene quiet around him couldn’t calm the internal storm that ran throughout him.

How is he still able to think about Shen Qingqiu in a time like this? Usually whenever he hunted, his mind would clear.

All the stupid problems of the day would mute for at least a few hours, that was the only way he knew to calm himself anyway.

But it doesn't seem to be working now. Great.

Liu Qingge sighed, sheathing Cheng Luan as there still seemed to be no signs of any evil creature at all.

Of course Shang Qinghua would flinch at the sound of a twig being stepped on—he’d probably confuse it with a big beast.

Stupid.

Liu Qingge glanced around the forest, the tall trees now bathed under the soft rays of the moonlight, the sounds of the night critters awakening around him.

And he still couldn’t calm himself with this?

Liu Qingge crossed his arms as he looked at the sky, grumbling about the chaos of it all, including cursing both Shen Qingqiu and Shang Qinghua.

Liu Qingge stiffened as he smelt something familiar and sweet—a scent he’s both avoided being near too but couldn’t help himself from being close too.

The scent of bamboo, herbal but with a sharp end—like that of oolong and white tea. Shen Qingqiu’s scent.

Complicated as the man himself, but unfairly alluring.

Wait.

Why would Shen Qingqiu’s scent be here—even worse, out of his place and out alone at night?

Shouldn’t he be drinking tea and spending his night reading stupid scrolls?

What if there were nefarious beasts, but he was out here overthinking it all?

Liu Qingge grumbled, clenching his hands as he made his way out to follow Shen Qingqiu’s scent, possibly maybe even scolding him if he had the chance.

But wouldn’t that mean they’d be bickering once more? They already did so after the meeting last morning.

If not for Yue Qingyuan’s intervention, it’d have continued to be a usual spar between them.

And Liu Qingge always wins—unless Shen Qingqiu uses his usual dirty tactics.

As Liu Qingge quickly chased after the scent, he finally reached out to Shen Qingqiu, who seemed to be unaware of his presence.

Odd.

Liu Qingge hid behind the multitude of trees, an appropriate distance placed between himself and Shen Qingqiu.

Liu Qingge clenched his jaw, “What an idiot!” He thought, “…if he’s so distracted like this, he could be attacked!

Did Shen Qingqiu always wander around stupidly alone at night?

Liu Qingge shook his head and gave up the thought of hiding like a coward—why was he even hiding in the first place!

He fears nothing!

Liu Qingge without a word ran over to Shen Qingqiu, to the latter’s surprise, before even speaking he had his arm forcefully held by Liu Qingge.

Shen Qingqiu’s protests stopped in his mouth, before a bitter look of annoyance ran through his face, “what are you doing? Let go of me, you brute!”

Liu Qingge refused to let go of his arm, instead, tightening his grip even more, his scowl deepening before he spoke, “what are you doing here?”

Shen Qingqiu scoffed, “what? Can’t I go out on a stroll? Or is that too complicated to go through that idiotic head of yours?”

Liu Qingge ignored Shen Qingqiu’s sharp words—at a point he almost got used to them.

Liu Qingge continued, “there are nefarious creatures around here—you’ll only make my work harder.”

Shen Qingqiu tried to pull back, glaring at Liu Qingge when he couldn’t escape, “oh, forgive my burdensome presence—but it appears you have no say about me being here. So if you could let me go!”

Liu Qingge shook his head, mad at how Shen Qingqiu wasn’t even listening to his words. Why was he in a rush to be let go anyway?

Liu Qingge spoke in a more serious tone, “it’s dangerous here. If you die, I'm not going to be responsible—and stop flaring your scent around. I can smell it from afar.”

Shen Qingqiu froze, his eyes widening at Liu Qingge’s stupidly blunt and unfiltered words.

Liu Qingge unconsciously pulled Qingqiu closer, his brows furrowed even more, “can’t you suppress it? Or do you do the exact same to others too?”

Shen Qingqiu finally snapped, “…You—”

Shen Qingqiu stopped sharply, then exhaled through gritted teeth, trying to keep his composure. “What do you mean others—”

Shen Qingqiu paused again, a new understanding dawning, “…you think I’m just wandering around asking for attention like some kind of heat-drunk omega?!”

Liu Qingge felt his own breath hitch, surprised at how Shen Qingqiu took his words differently.

Too differently.

He was just trying to tell him to be careful! What was he doing wrong?

But in a way—it did sound like he was accusing him of that!

In no way would Liu Qingge’s honor drown and die this way!

Liu Qingge finally let go of Shen Qingqiu’s arm quickly, as if his hand had been burned by a burning iron.

Shen Qingqiu huffed and crossed his arms, looking at any place rather than Liu Qingge, the anger he felt was present, but so was the deep feeling of embarrassment that went through him.

Liu Qingge began to walk away, his steps and pushed as he looked ahead, “…I didn’t mean it that way—just that you should be more careful. Have more control.”

“I have complete control,” Shen Qingqiu snapped, folding his arms across his chest as he began to walk behind Liu Qingge, trying to match his pace. “If others notice anything, it’s their own lack of discipline, not mine.”

Liu Qingge continued to walk away, but…

Why was he walking away?

From who was he walking away?

Why did it seem like he was running away?

Liu Qingge paused in his steps, earning a raised brow from Shen Qingqiu.

Liu Qingge slowly spoke, his hand digging through his robe’s pocket, “…stop dropping your fan all the time.” Liu Qingge grumbled, “It gets…annoying to bring it every time to your doorstep.”

In his hand, Liu Qingge took out a white folding fan, embroidered in soft streake, creating the elegant image of bamboo over its dark rib frame.

It indeed belonged to Shen Qingqiu.

Shen Qingqiu blinked, his brows lifting ever so slightly, then a begrudging mumble came after, “Doing all this behind my back—do you think I’m that fragile?”

And for once, his tone didn’t carry out his usual sharp bite.

Liu Qingge didn’t know why he hadn’t returned the fan the moment he picked it up, why did he hesitate?

Liu Qingge felt a slight heat at the tips of his ears, which increased even more as he saw Shen Qingqiu’s slightly flustered expression.

Liu Qingge tried to look away, but he found it hopeless, he finally spoke, “…stop fooling around. I’ll escort you back to your peak. Now follow.”

And surprisingly, Shen Qingqiu swallowed his pride and without a protest followed Liu Qingge through the night.

Before Liu Qingge could sigh a breath of relief, Shen Qingqiu’s voice interrupted the quiet of the night, “why do you bring it all the time? Why not have some disciple do it for you?”

Alright—alright! I see some want more, why decline? Doing this while testing for finals? Sure!

Chapter 3: Fan Once More Dropped

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

Liu Qingge looked down, his jaw clenched as he thought about his next words.

How could he answer something he isn’t even sure about himself?

The sound of the crickets and the hoots of the owls rang around them, but it couldn’t dare outmatch the storm of Liu Qingge’s pounding heart.

Liu Qingge had three options, the next more shameful than the last:

He could lie, saying that he never meant anything whenever he gave the fan back. There were no underlying intentions.

But why would he be clarifying that? Wouldn’t that mean he was making something look obvious this whole time?

If he really had a clean conscience, why would he even be lying in the first place?

The second option could be this: Tell the truth.

But…

What is the truth?

Wouldn’t that be him accepting something? Something more

But there was nothing between them, it was as simple as this: Shen Qingqiu is forgetful and frequently drops his fan every time, so the unfortunate busy Liu Qingge has to make his way to give it back, all because of his honor and beliefs.

Who’d believe that?

It seemed Liu Qingge was intent on doing so himself.

And here came the third option, the most shameful-–unimaginable of them all: Excuse himself and run away.

It seemed more decent to Liu Qingge to avoid such discussion, since, didn’t he usually walk away whenever he wanted to avoid a conversation with someone?

It wouldn’t be suspicious, and Shen Qingqiu wouldn’t take it to heart, right?

Liu Qingge gathered the courage to meet Shen Qingqiu’s impending gaze, standing straighter and his face turned serious, before finally speaking, “I do it…because it’s  my duty.”

Shen Qingqiu blinked once, then twice.

Shen Qingqiu sighed, despite the unamused look on his face, Liu Qingge thought he saw a subtle expression of disappointment.

Odd.

It seemed Liu Qingge chose the unknown fourth path: Be an idiotic, and utterly stupid brute.

Shen Qingqiu huffed and began to walk ahead, passing Liu Qingge’s frozen state, before mumbling, “every day you prove to me how much of an imbecile you are.”

Liu Qingge finally broke from his statue-like state, what was even more embarrassing was with how much confidence he had spoken.

His ancestors must be rolling on their graves out of rage or laughter.

Liu Qingge sighed and caught up to Shen Qingqiu, now walking beside him, their shoulders slightly grazing against each other.

Shen Qingqiu rolled his eyes as he continued mumbling, “dumb, awkward, socially-awkward, predictable, duty minded, stiff, stupid, idiot, brute, a scowl that never seems to leave your face…”

Shen Qingqiu trailed off, side eyeing Liu Qingge before muttering something to himself, “why do I bother?”

Liu Qingge couldn’t stop thinking about what he had just said, although now it was past, shouldn’t he be glad that he avoided a possibly emotional conversation?

Liu Qingge then commented, “Shen-shixiong, why were you out here?”

Shen Qingqiu closed his eyes, a brow twitching in irritation before he snapped bitterly, “because I can, can’t I leave my peak for a stroll and a sense of peace?”

Liu Qingge furrowed his brows in confusion, “you could walk around your own grounds, or your residence.”

“…”

Liu Qingge looked ahead, “you could walk around your room too–that’s quiet.”

It didn’t make sense, why out here so far? Liu Qingge hoped what he suggested would be useful to Shen Qingqiu.

Shen Qingqiu opened his eyes and suddenly with his closed fan, slapped it hard against Liu Qingge’s shoulder, “what are you spouting? Don’t you hear yourself when speaking? I came out because I wanted to—why are you still insisting?!”

To Shen Qingqiu, it felt like Liu Qingge couldn’t stop repeating himself around after a few more words were said—his silence was better than this!

Liu Qingge’s brows raised in surprise as he felt the slap, his intent gaze from ahead turning towards Shen Qingqiu, “I was just saying—I didn’t mean to offend you—!”

Liu Qingge leaned in, his teeth gritted as he continued,”…why do you always think we’re supposed to fight!?”

Shen Qingqiu’s mouth stood agape, “...You–! Are you toying with me!?”

Shen Qingqiu dusted his robes, before storming off quickly, shouting towards Liu Qingge, “I’m going back to my peak! Since it seems the fearsome alpha Liu Qingge doesn’t see it proper for his omega shixiong to leave his peak!”

Before Liu Qingge could protest or follow, he paused as he heard another far, angry shout from Shen Qingqiu, “don’t follow me, or I’ll bite your hand off! Or slice it!”

Liu Qingge stood alone now in Yelu woods, utterly perplexed at what had just occurred–he hadn’t even fully soaked in what Shen Qingqiu had asked him beforehand!

This was a mess, one that wouldn’t allow him to sleep at night!

Liu Qingge rubbed the spot where Shen Qingqiu’s fan slapped—where Shen Qingqiu’s shoulder brushed against his.

He messed up, well—in every conversation he messes up.

Liu Qingge is so blunt that he appears either dumb or apathetic.

Or both.

Liu Qingge walked over the way Shen Qingqiu had headed—obviously long gone by now, but what surprised Liu Qingge even more, was the fact that once more, Shen Qingqiu has dropped his fan.

Chapter 4: Peak Lords Banter

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

It was already late morning when Shen Qingqiu finally arrived back at Qing Jing peak, he just gave simple nods of acknowledgement to the passing disciple. It was obvious that he wasn’t in a good mood.

But honestly, every disciple wondered if Shen Qingqiu was ever in a good mood.

Shen Qingqiu finally arrived at his residence, sighing in slight exasperation as he closed the door behind him, “simple-minded fool…”

Shen Qingqiu looked up as he heard a noise coming from his living room, placing a hand on Xiu Ya before dropping it—it was a familiar and annoying scent he recognized.

Peak lord Shang Qinghua was here, intruding.

Again

If it became a habit, Shen Qingqiu himself would personally kick Shang Qinghua away, peak lord brothers or not.

Shen Qingqiu slowly walked over, before reaching out for his fan under his robe’s pockets.

His eyes widened as he remembered that he had left it behind, comical of him to have forgotten.

He left it behind on purpose, of course.

Shang Qinghua bowed slightly in greeting as he saw Shen Qingqiu, before clearing his throat and speaking in a light, cautious tone, “So, Shen-shixiong, I can guess you left your dear fan of yours behind—again.”

Shen Qingqiu rolled his eyes, walking towards the counter that held his tea set, his back facing Shang Qinghua, “you have eyes, I won’t state the obvious.”

Shen Qingqiu placed it on the table, picking out the herbs from a special box he used to organize them.

Shang Qinghua made his way to sit down on the couch, making himself comfortable before continuing, “alright, alright—why the grouchy mood? Did Liu Qingge reject you?”

Shen Qingqiu turned his gaze back to face Shang Qinghua, a glare on his face as his words fell with barely contained anger, “you shouldn’t involve yourself anymore, Shang Qinghua. Unless you want me to let that little secret of yours out.”

Shang Qinghua flinched, a nervous smile crawling up his face as he shook his head, “fine, fine, fine! Can we forget that?!”

Shen Qingqiu couldn’t help the small smirk that formed, “then stop testing my limits.”

“… and getting on my nerves …” Shen Qingqiu internally mumbled

Shen Qingqiu began to prepare tea, using a heating talisman to quicken the process up; he rarely used those methods—but there’d be a visitor soon.

Shang Qinghua approached and curiously peeked over Shen Qingqiu’s shoulder to see what he was doing, “why are there two cups? Ah! Are you preparing one for me ?”

Shen Qingqiu’s head snapped as he raised a sharp brow at Shang Qinghua, “no. This isn’t for you, go make yourself some tea, it won’t take you that long.”

Then with a mocking expression, Shen Qingqiu leaned in and whispered, “how come instead it seems you only serve that demon alpha of yours very willingly, hm?’

Shang Qinghua immediately flushed, his flustered state making him rush to defend himself, “h-hey! Shut up! I thought we agreed not to talk about him! And he has a name, you know!?”

Shen Qingqiu barked out a small laugh, finally serving the boiling water into the herbs he placed on the two cups, “oh really? Don’t think I didn’t know about you going to Bai Zhan Peak to speak to Liu Qingge,” his tone ended with a bitter edge.

Shang Qinghua shook his head continuously, “I was—I was giving the requested load! I was just doing my job—believe me!”

Shang Qinghua pressed his hands together as if in prayer, the sight seemed both pitiful and amusing.

Shen Qingqiu wouldn’t back down, he honestly was infuriated the moment he heard about Shang Qinghua visiting Liu Qingge.

Not even Shen Qingqiu himself dared to!

Shen Qingqiu spoke, his tone taunting, “I bet you must like the thrill of meeting up with an alpha in secret, hm? You said you had to pretend to serve him, hm? Now I wonder…how do you address him?

“Is it something like…’ my king ?’ Hm?”

Shang Qinghua covered his flustered and red face before turning away, “all because I asked about the tea and your dear Liu Qingge!”

Shen Qingqiu crossed his arms, scoffing at Shang Qinghua’s words, “dimwit! I don’t like him! Stop insisting! Your little theories aren’t even logical!”

Shang Qinghua threw his hands up in a dramatic manner, “then stop leaving your fan and having Liu Qingge chasing it and giving it back to you all the time! Are you playing fetch?”

Shen Qingqiu paused, his mouth opening and closing as he searched for an explanation, “am not—I am not! I…”

Shang Qinghua continued, his past embarrassment fueling him to drag Shen Qingqiu down along with him, “and in Ling Xi caves? Why did you save him? You just calmed him down and left! But why did you save him!? He doesn’t even know it was you!”

Shen Qingqiu looked away, grumbling, “Tch, whatever. I should’ve killed him if it meant you’d continue bothering me with your nosy self!”

Shang Qinghua shook his head, leaning too closely for Shen Qingqiu’s comfort, “why do you drop the fan? Tell me! Tell me! And don’t you dare black mail me later about my secret! I hold one of yours now too!”

Shen Qingqiu knew Shang Qinghua wasn’t capable of that, but still, a part of him snapped after he heard Shang Qinghua’s threat.

Shen Qingqiu slightly pushed Shang Qinghua away, “...it’s not me! It’s something else! And I don’t like him at all, not that brute! It’s just something telling me to do so—like, like…”

Shang Qinghua groaned, “...don’t tell me ‘It’s instincts’!”

Shen Qingqiu sighed, since he was going to say that, so he preferably kept silent.

After seeing Shen Qingqiu safe enough to approach, Shang Qinghua patted Shen Qingqiu’s shoulder quickly, his voice rushed, “well, I guess it’s time for me to leave! Nice talk!”

Shen Qingqiu rolled his eyes, rubbing his temple as he heard Shang Qinghua hurried taps of his steps fade, the door slamming right after.

He had indeed left.

Finally, his scent that was mixed with that alpha of his—that was poorly hidden, left his residence. Probably off to see him. Tch.

Shen Qingqiu set the two teas’ down at his table, his legs crossed and back straight as he waited for that idiotic brute to come—since, as everyone noticed, an alpha that honored honor more than anything else would do anything to recover it.

And indeed, what Liu Qingge had told him wasn’t honorable at all!

Honestly, I really like the dynamic these two have? I should maybe make a little more SQ and SQH interactions!

Chapter Text

After Shen Qingqiu stormed off from Yelu woods…

Liu Qingge blankly stared at the fan lying in the ground, before hesitantly picking it up, stuffing it back into his robes pocket before heading back to his peak.

He wouldn’t follow Shen Qingqiu—it was possible his Shixiong would stick to his words and slice his hand off.

It seems now that Liu Qingge’s pocket has long become the fan’s second home.

Liu Qingge felt like he should care more about Shen Qingqiu’s reaction, but at the same time, another part tells him it’s alright if he doesn’t.

Which side is correct?

Too bad it seems he won’t find the answer, it was basically hopeless.

He was hopeless, right?

It was still night when he arrived at his residence in Bai Zhan Peak, no disciples in sight.

Well, that was all the time—all members of Bai Zhan peak know whenever they encounter Liu Qingge, they’d “spar” with him, or rather, get beaten up by Liu Qingge.

So they’d obviously were smart enough to not get in Liu Qingge’s way to avoid getting bruised black and blue!

Liu Qingge quietly entered his room, placing Cheng Luan back in its place before retreating to his bed.

Just before he laid down, something stirred him into thinking taking out Shen Qingqiu’s fan was a good idea.

But of course, he’d later find out it wasn’t a good idea.

As Liu Qingge took out the fan, he placed it carefully on the bed, before taking a few steps back to admire it.

Wait, admire it?

Who’d admire a fan, even less—him!?

Liu Qingge held his head, he already felt crazy, what was he even doing

Could it be Shen Qingqiu’s fault?

Did that alluringly, sweet and oddly calmingly suspicious scent muddle his mind?

Yes!

That’s it! Shen Qingqiu’s playing tricks on him again, that snake

Liu Qingge slumped down on the wooden floor, before slightly crawling closer to the bed, his eyes intently gazing on the fan.

The fan had a scent—his scent.

Some unknown part of Liu Qingge whispered to him the unthinkable—

To take a whiff of it—just a little.

Liu Qingge clenched his jaw, his teeth gritted as he felt a wave of anger go through him, but he didn’t know who to direct it at.

This was pathetic, and Liu Qingge isn’t pathetic!

Take a whiff? Huh?! Since when? He’d never dare do so!

What was he? Some lovesick alpha–

Oh.

Oh no.

He couldn’t continue his thoughts any further, so Liu Qingge stood up once more, quickly picking up the fan and tossing it on the top of his desk.

Liu Qingge groaned slightly, slumping into his bed and burying his confusion in the sheets.

As Liu Qingge felt the drowsiness call out for him, a soft, muffled whisper echoed through his mind before he succumbed,

why do I even bother?

·.·

·.·

Liu Qingge despite being asleep, restlessly thrashed around in bed, lucid dreams haunting him with a feeling of both guilt and perplexion.

That voice—it wasn’t his, but he heard it before. Where?

From whom?

Despite it sounding like a sigh, it carried such a weight of disappointment—a part of Liu Qingge wanted to reassure the owner of the voice's words.

They needed comfort, it was obvious.

He needed to say something, but he couldn’t.

But—Liu Qingge usually wasn’t the type to care, or the type of person who knew how to express what he felt.

The answer from who it came from was so close, Liu Qingge felt like he had deciphered it.

Placed at the tip of his tongue, barely out of reach.

But before he could linger any longer, he suddenly woke up at the sound of a knock in his door.

·.·

·.·

Liu Qingge’s eyes quickly opened, before promptly waking up and walking towards the door, opening it and snatching whatever the person behind the door brought, closing it shut just as quickly as he had formerly opened it.

It was probably a member of Bai Zhan Peak—they always came at this hour to deliver news or scrolls about missions.

Liu Qingge never bothered to greet anyone, neither did they care.

Or they just got used to his attitude by now.

Liu Qingge opened the scroll, an expressionless look on his face as he quickly scanned the contents, just as usual: Report of a beast that continuously kidnapped nearby villagers in the area.

It was simple, it’d probably take him an hour or two at most.

As Liu Qingge closed the scroll, he tried to stop himself from wandering further into thinking about what had happened during his sleep.

Liu Qingge walked over to his window, staring at the now rising sun, the sky tinted with shades of pink and orange.

“...did he really get back to his place?” Liu Qingge wondered to himself, it was normal to be concerned over the safety of another peak lord, even if it’s Shen Qingqiu.

Anyway, he shouldn’t worry much—his Shixiong may be an omega, but who said he isn’t capable of defending himself?

Nevertheless, Shen Qingqiu was a peak lord!

Honestly, with that sharp mouth of his, neither would any kidnapper keep him any longer than an hour or two.

They’d probably return Shen Qingqiu back.

Liu Qingge threw the closed scroll at his desk roughly before remembering about the abandoned fan lying there as well.

Liu Qingge took it in hand, before going to a nearby mirror around his room, his eyes widened in surprise as he glanced at himself.

It indeed looked like he had a restless night, even worse the fact that he hadn’t changed out of his clothes or outer robes.

Coming from a noble family, he’d probably get scolded until his ears were blistered, although through his childhood he strangely developed the ability to not process any words after he began to get bored.

Maybe it wasn’t as good an ability as he thought.

Liu Qingge felt too lazy to change, although it was rare for him not to, so he sighed and placed the fan once more into his robe’s pocket.

His day would go out like this: He’d hunt the beast, kill it, and with the earnings he gets from the villagers, he’d use it on buying Shen Qingqiu an apology gift.

Why an apology gift?

It’s not like he’ll talk it out with Shen Qingqiu, since, what else was there to talk about? He just wanted to avoid any misunderstandings and future awkward conversations.

Liu Qingge knew he couldn’t express himself with words, so he’d bring gifts whenever he felt either sorry, guilty, or in the mood.

He once did so when he and his childhood friend had a fight, and since that worked, why wouldn't it work now?

Liu Qingge sighed in relief, if Shen Qingqiu forgave him, they could pretend what happened in Yelu woods never occurred, and possibly they’d avoid usual bickering during peak lord meetings.

Maybe for a span of a week if he was lucky enough.

And with that in mind, Liu Qingge took Cheng Luan and stormed out of his peak with a determined scowl, ignoring the scared shouts of the younger members around him as they saw his face.

Liu Qingge grumbled to himself, if they all kept screaming and wailing like cowards, he'd probably have a spar with them.

Someone help this man out, sigh.
Thank you all for the amazing support and comments! Indeed, they are the sole motivation I have—I give up easily, sob.

Chapter Text

Liu Qingge couldn’t recall ever rushing on a mission—even when his little sister’s mate had their first child.

Liu Qingge quickly told the village chief that he had slayed whatever creature terrorized their homes, before ignoring the chief's words of gratitude.

Instead, he snatched the payment from the servant's hand and walked away.

Or to be exact, jogged away.

Liu Qingge immediately rushed towards the markets, scanning around the stalls for anything that he thought would catch his Shixiong's eye.

Liu Qingge’s scowl seemed to deepen more as he continued concentrating on the matter.

He’s never been this focused more than ever.

How to spot if Liu Qingge was so intensely concentrating?

He’d basically push whomever blocked his path, oblivious to how outrageously disrespectful his actions could be taken.

He did come from a noble household, but for some reason—this seemed much more important.

As Liu Qingge spotted a store selling fans, he immediately began to look over the products on display.

There were various colors to different models and details in each one.

But it wasn’t like Liu Qingge either cared for fans, nor did he know how to pick one out.

They all usually appeared the same to him.

If it’s a fan, it’s a fan.

What’s the difference?

They all are used for the same thing.

Unless you specifically were using it to hide that pretty face from the whole world during peak lord meetings.

The vendor approached Liu Qingge as she spotted him, seeming unfazed about Liu Qingge’s expression.

The vendor seemed to be a kind, old omega lady, smiling as she finally spoke, “Ah, young master, are you interested in one of these fans?”

Liu Qingge shook off from the daze he was in, his voice both filled with slight confusion and frustration, “I was. What is the best quality of fans you have?”

He was at a disadvantage obviously, he now needed to embarrassingly rely on a vendor to pick out a simple fan.

But obviously, the vendor would know more about them than him, and he coldly just gave Shen Qingqiu a crappy fan.

It’d be him indirectly offending his Shixiong without intentionally doing so. That was a disaster he wanted to avoid.

The old omega lady saw this as a great advantage for earnings and immediately grabbed a fan from among the ones displayed, bringing it to view.

She tapped Liu Qingge’s shoulder, “young master! This one’s made of silk! Very popular these days! It also has a beautiful design, eh? Look!”

Liu Qingge quickly glanced at the fan, leaning in slightly closer, his eyes immediately widened.

Even someone as ignorant about fans like him was amazed at the details and features of the fan.

It appeared so smooth—silky even, a painting of a bamboo forest on it. Its ribs were detailed with slight strokes of gold, the fan was both intricate and eye-catching.

Of course, it was the most expensive fan the vendor had.

But did that matter to Liu Qingge?

Liu Qingge could feel this was the one, looking at the vendor before nodding seriously, “I’ll buy it, name the price!”

The vendor grinned and nodded back, “of course! Good choice young master, It’s on discount for you!”

Liu Qingge couldn’t imagine Shen Qingqiu’s reaction—the man was undoubtedly unpredictable.

Would Shen Qingqiu scold him?

Tell him it’s ugly?

Say he had no taste—no, that didn’t matter.

What Liu Qingge worried about was Shen Qingqiu’s possible rejection of his apology.

Yes, it was a poor one. But what else could he do!?

Liu Qingge gave the vendor the payment and with cautious hands placed the fan along with the other one in his robe’s pocket.

The vendor gave a knowing grin as she saw Liu Qingge’s body language.

He was too gentle as he handled the fan, it may be expensive, but it only meant one thing!

She knew she wasn’t wrong, no alpha—especially one from an esteemed family would do what this young master is doing!

Deciding to prove her speculations, the vendor decided to pry on him with her curiosity, “Young master, who is this for? I bet it must be for someone who you fancy, hm?”

Liu Qingge took a double take, the tips of his ears slightly flushing at the comment.

He couldn’t help deepening his scowl, shaking his head firmly as he looked at the vendor, “no, I do not. This is nothing but a gift—an apology gift.”

The vendor raised her brow in amusement, but then chuckled gleefully, “alright young master, but don’t live in denial for too long, you’re still so young...”

Liu Qingge sighed, nodding as he began to walk away, hastily paying her a small tip, “…nice service, don’t tell anyone I was here.”

The vendor’s mouth opened then closed, taking the surprisingly huge amount of “tip” while nodding furiously as she waved at Liu Qingge’s fading figure.

The vendor called out, “I hope young master likes it then! You made an amazing choice—come back again!”

The street vendor sighed and shook her head, the young master indeed reminded her of her grandson—oblivious of his own feelings.

A part of her wondered if she would ever see the day when the young master courted the one he liked.

Liu Qingge continued to quickly walk the bustling street, he knew a fan wouldn’t suffice—no.

Liu Qingge huffed as he heard the reclaims from the people he pushed and shoved.

It was not his fault that they were talking too slow!

How is it possible that this market is so bustling to the brim with people at this hour? It’s not even late in the morning!

Meanwhile he must be running laps around Bai Zhan Peak, people around here had just woken up to go into a shopping spree.

How absurd!

Still, this was an important matter, one he didn’t want to be in.

How was he even dragged into this?

Maybe he’d just buy the whole market at this point, he hates thinking too much.

Chapter 7: Sorry Shixiong—! Pt.1

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

Liu Qingge after an immense haul of shopping (which he’d always dreaded) made his way towards Qing Jing peak.

It was the afternoon, the sun not as intense as when he flew with Cheng Luan.

He decided after that it’d be easier to walk by foot, he didn’t want to risk dropping the gifts he had tirelessly bought.

On his way, he crossed paths with  a wimpy omega—or simply the peak lord of An Ding peak, Shang Qinghua.

They both stared blankly at each other, before Shang Qinghua jumped in shock and pointed at Liu Qingge.

He continued to point at Liu Qingge as he looked at Qing Jing peak from behind him, “…Liu Qingge? What are you doing here?! Are you visiting someone or ambushing them with gifts?!”

Liu Qingge huffed, grumbling as he spoke, “move aside.”

Shang Qinghua calmed down and sighed, still exasperated by Liu Qingge’s attitude, no way this was Shen Qingqiu’s type!

Not like his type was any better either.

Shang Qinghua shook his head, refusing to move until he got at least a hint of an answer, “c’mon! You can’t just dismiss a fellow peak lord so easily!”

Liu Qingge raised an eyebrow, “then why were you also here?”

Shang Qinghua crossed his arms, “to deliver a usual haul, official business of course. Now, what’s your excuse?”

Liu Qingge decided to change the topic, he didn’t want to embarrass himself in front of someone wimpy like Shang Qinghua.

To tell Shang Qinghua he actually came here to apologize to Shen Qingqiu?!

His honor woke drown and be ripped to shreds!

He’d probably qi deviate this instant if it were a worst case scenario.

Liu Qingge knew exactly how to change topics, so he proceeded to walk around Shang Qinghua, ignoring the latter’s protests and reclaims.

Shang Qinghua couldn’t believe the nerve Liu Qingge could build in a span of hours!

Whatever, Mobei-Jun was waiting for him, he didn’t want to make him wait!

Liu Qingge grumbled at how easily Shang Qinghua could go to any peak as he wished, even excuse it as work.

The only excuses Liu Qingge could come up with would either be to come for official matters, or in this case, being an apology gift.

Would it work?

It’s not certain, but it isn’t possible that his shixiong could be angered or offended any more than he is, right?

It’s not like Shen Qingqiu made his way to even wait for his arrival, since it's a surprise.

Liu Qingge wasn’t as easy to read, right?

:.:

Liu Qingge looked stranger than usual to the disciples of Qing Jing peak.

How?

He carried a bouquet of flowers in one hand, a bag of what could possibly be treats in the other, and his pockets were stuffed full of what they could imagine as trinkets fell so far away from the market.

To whom was he meant to bring this to?

Of course not Peak lord Qingqiu, right?

:.:

When Shen Qingqiu woke up, it was surprisingly ready midway through the afternoon.

Shen Qingqiu had waited for Liu Qingge for a long while, but he had accidentally fallen asleep.

Of course he did!

The night he had embarrassingly run off like a pouty maiden and in spite walked all alone back to his peak, he hadn’t had a blink of rest!

The sun was beginning to rise the moment he had come to his residence!

And then added with the annoying visit from Shang Qinghua, fatigue won over him to the moment he sat down to wait for his shidi.

His body felt stiff as he stared at the side table, the tea already cold after being set out for so long.

First of all, how should he feel?

Now that he’s fully woken up, he felt pissed towards his shidi.

He waited hours for him to come, and he still hadn’t?

Did Liu Qingge give up on his ruined honor?

He made Shen Qingqiu prepare tea and seem like an idiot as he slept—damn slept waiting for him to arrive?!

Why even bother?!

Of course he liked him!

His own pride never allowed him to voice his feelings out, even less to someone as nosy as Shang Qinghua.

So it’s quite obvious that he excused himself, avoiding Shang Qinghua to discover the truth as he shot him with such absurd questions.

Of course he was leaving to fans on purpose!

Who’d be an idiot to drop their fan more than once!

Shen Qingqiu just wanted to make sure if Liu Qingge noticed, and if he did, it meant he cared.

But…

Shen Qingqiu swore he’d never fall for anyone, especially an alpha.

His horrid experiences with the Qiu’s was so traumatic, he couldn’t  even fully recall what transpired those years.

All he knows is that those wounds would never fade, no matter if they’re long dead and he is no longer held as a slave.

So he’d make it hard for Liu Qingge, if Liu Qingge gave up, then it’d mean he wasn’t worth Shen Qingqiu’s time.

But if the brute attempted to get through him, despite how lousy they were, who knows if Shen Qingqiu would say yes.

Shen Qingqiu huffed and took the two cups with pitiful cold tea, as he was about to empty them out elsewhere, he almost dropped them at the shock from the loud bang of his door as it was forced open.

Who else would be more of a brute other than Liu Qingge to open the door in that manner?!

Chapter 8: Sorry Shixiong—! Pt.2

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

Liu Qingge was oblivious to Shen Qingqiu’s obvious anger as he barged into the room.

As he saw his Shixiong’s arms crossed, placed firmly but gracefully on top of his chest.

A sharp, raised brow and his signature cold, bitter gaze was on Liu Qingge.

But as previously mentioned, Liu Qingge was completely and absolutely oblivious.

Liu Qingge didn’t know what else to do or say, so he immediately walked past Shen Qingqiu and placed the bag of treats he had on hand on the table.

The moment Shen Qingqiu was about to speak up, Liu Qingge had already walked over, and as he stood in front of him, he shoved the bouquet of flowers into his chest, making Shen Qingqiu uncross his arms to catch them from falling into the floor.

Shen Qingqiu was utterly stunned at Liu Qingge’s behavior, the alpha was incorrigible!

Shen Qingqiu either wanted to scream at the heavens or go into seclusion out of outrage!

Liu Qingge began to figure out the moment he shoved the flowers to Shen Qingqiu, he'd maybe get mad, so of course he cleared his throat and spoke, “forgive me.”

Shen Qingqiu gave Liu Qingge a deadpan look, “for what? Be clear!”

Shen Qingqiu held the bouquet in one hand, the other pointing at Liu Qingge in a scolding manner, “is it for being an idiot last night? For making me wait for you? For barging into my residence unannounced and shoving flowers into my arms like a savage?!”

Liu Qingge froze—that didn’t sound like him at all.

Or, he at least intended to not look that way.

He messed up, right?

Shen Qingqiu huffed as he began to walk away, brushing his shoulder against Liu Qingge’s as he made his way to find a vase for the flowers.

As he began to rummage through the cabinets, he called out, “it’ll take you a lot more to make amends and regain that grand honor of yours!”

Liu Qingge ran a hand through his hair, this turned out awfully!

He had a restless night, went into a damn shopping spree, and now he’s about to be scolded by his Shixiong for doing it all wrong!?

How unfair!

Shen Qingqiu brought the vase now filled with flowers to the living room, placing them gently in the middle of a table.

Shen Qingqiu finally faced Liu Qingge,

“…what is it you have stuffed in those pockets of yours? A dead carcass?”

Which wasn’t a surprising guess.

Liu Qingge gave a soft “oh” as he remembered he still had more to give to his Shixiong.

Maybe this will save him face! If not, it couldn’t get worse then it is right now, right?

Liu Qingge looked away as he rummaged through his pockets, then walked over to the same table Shen Qingqiu was at, before placing various trinkets of sorts he thought would at least catch Shen Qingqiu’s eye.

Shen Qingqiu leaned in, picking up what Liu Qingge brought.

To various candies, brushes, and surprisingly good quality hair pins.

Shen Qingqiu let out a quiet, “huh.”

Shen Qingqiu couldn’t help the soft, warm feeling that seeped into his guarded heart.

The once burning rage cooled off slightly by Liu Qingge’s hopeless antics.

Shen Qingqiu knew Liu Qingge had good intentions behind whatever the brute did.

But as Shen Qingqiu said, he wouldn’t make it easy for Liu Qingge.

As Shen Qingqiu gazed down at a particular jade hairpin he took into his hand, his breath hitched as he felt a big, strong and warm hand on top of his own.

Shen Qingqiu quickly glanced up, surprised to see how intensely Liu Qingge was staring at him.

Shen Qingqiu could feel his heartbeat jump, the warm feeling freezing at Liu Qingge’s sudden actions.

Liu Qingge suddenly spoke, breaking the sizzling silence between the two, “…Shen-shixiong, I’m sorry to have been rude to you last night, I promise I’ll make it all up.”

Shen Qingqiu let out a soft, barely audible exhale, “…I know you will. So, are you trying to stuff me up with sweets or what?”

Liu Qingge’s eyes widened, before a low huff, maybe a laugh, escaped him, “one of them is made of honey—good for back pain, they said.”

Shen Qingqiu raised a brow, his voice slightly teasing, “oh? Are you calling me old, now?”

Liu Qingge shook his head firmly, his hold on Shen Qingqiu’s hands tightening, “no.”

Shen Qingqiu enjoyed the warmth Liu Qingge’s hands gave him, but a part of him wondered if Liu Qingge was even registering what he was doing.

Does he feel the same?

If not, it felt like too much—too early.

But not wrong.

Shen Qingqiu pulled his hands away from Liu Qingge’s, placing the jade hairpin from his grip back on the table along with the other trinkets.

Liu Qingge furrowed his brows, confused at why Shen Qingqiu pulled away, but in the end he didn’t think much of it.

Liu Qingge then remembered how he had the fan he had just brought, as well as Shen Qingqiu’s original fan with him.

Just in time, Shen Qingqiu also remembered too, “Liu-shidi, where’s my fan? I dropped it on my way, did you pick it up?”

Liu Qingge nodded, beginning to dig through his pocket, “yes—I did.”

But something made him pause.

Why?

He didn’t want to give it back.

If he gave it back, that’d mean he’d have nothing from Shen Qingqiu.

But why did it matter if he had something from his Shixiong or not?

Liu Qingge hesitated even more, so in the end, he kept the fan he bought from the vendor back at the market, and gave back Shen Qingqiu his original fan.

If not, if he went back to Bai Zhan peak with it, he’d probably once more have a restless sleep over sniffing the fan or not dillema.

Shen Qingqiu eyed Liu Qingge’s expressions, it wasn’t usually hard reading him.

Liu Qingge always had a scowl, they almost appeared the same, but Shen Qingqiu could tell Liu Qingge was…reluctant?

How strange, and indeed a pitiful sight.

It’s like seeing a dog whine pitifully as it returns its favorite bone.

Shen Qingqiu opened his fan, covering the bottom part of his face as he began to speak, “you broke my door, no treats will be enough to fix it—so you better come up with a better apology, Liu-Shidi.”

Liu Qingge nodded begrudgingly, “…yes, I will—I promise!”

Shen Qingqiu hummed in satisfaction, “so, what method will you use now?”

Liu Qingge crossed his arms, “…every day, I’ll come every morning here.”

Shen Qingqiu almost dropped his fan in surprise, “huh? Why so?”

Liu Qingge calmly continued, his voice level, “I don’t know how to make tea, so you’ll make it for me.”

Shen Qingqiu closed his fan with a respectable snap, his mouth opening and closing at Liu Qingge’s candid remarks.

“What am I? A housewife? Make it yourself! It isn’t that hard!”

Liu Qingge shook his head, “the best way to give my respects to Shen-Shixiong and apologize is to come visit him and talk to him every day.”

Liu Qingge added, “…I know how to make tea—sort of. But Shen-shixiong knows more than I.”

Thankfully, that slightly calmed Shen Qingqiu’s anger, Liu Qingge saved himself once more from being slapped by that fan of his.

Shen Qingqih humphed, “deal. You’ll weed my grounds and do all the dirty work whenever you come. And I’ll keep those honey candies—not because my back aches!”

Liu Qingge once more took Shen Qingqiu’s hands, pulling the latter towards himself, “I’ll bring gifts every day, carcasses—blankets of the most hunted beasts, herbs that take millions of men to find. I’ll do it.”

Shen Qingqiu couldn’t stop the slight flush painting his cheeks, “…alright then, best you keep your word, Liu-shidi,” Shen Qingqiu whispered.

Liu Qingge swore, “on my honor.”

And so, this was the mark of where the brute alpha of a Liu Qingge, began to visit his petty, cold and untouchable omega Shixiong daily.

Chapter 9: Furs and Herbs

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

Liu Qingge has visited Shen Qingqiu every morning, late morning, or even afternoon if he was late for the past month.

Liu Qingge had spent his days like this:

  1. Wake up (snatch scroll and reports from servants)
  2. Dress
  3. Do missions (leave as quickly as possible)
  4. Buy in markets
  5. Go visit Shixiong

Yes, in that order, after that, he’d return to his peak, do more missions if he could, avoid talking to any other peak lords etc.

He didn’t even know all their names anyway.

After missions, he’d bring Shen Qingqiu gifts, and in exchange, he’d get a free tea, a scolding, and breakfast.

If that was all it took to keep his honor, then Liu Qingge really didn’t mind at all.

In reality, he’s never spoken so much in the past years, not like he made much effort into speaking with Shen Qingqiu, the latter did the rest.

Right now, Liu Qingge instead of bringing nice carcasses worth of display (Shen Qingqiu slapped him multiple times with his fan), Liu Qingge no longer could bring that, so he’d bring furs.

Why?

He heard omega’s like to…nest, but he’s never heard or seen about his shixiong nest, so, he’d hoped now his shixiong could have materials to nest with.

It wouldn’t be improper to say it to him directly, right?

No, he’s learned somewhat to restrain himself.

Liu Qingge obviously wouldn’t dare give him a simple blanket from the market, no.

In the past week, Liu Qingge travelled towards a mountainous area, it was cold, but thankfully he killed the white, furry beast quickly.

(He was slapped once more by his shixiong’s unforgiving fan because he arrived late at night).

Liu Qingge sent it to be made into nice, fireproof furs.

Why fireproof?

What if his poor shixiong was attacked by fire?

Wait, who in the sane mind would bring a blanket made of beast fur while being attacked?

Who’d dare attack his shixiong in the first place?

It sort of worked when Liu Qingge was playing it out in his head some days ago…

Whatever.

As Liu Qingge held the giant blanket, he made sure to bring a second gift of course, if not, what else would he give Shen Qingqiu if he didn’t like the first?

Rare tea leaves.

Why?

Liu Qingge heard his shixiong knew the art of tea ceremonies, meaning, he needed tea for that, right?

So, Liu Qingge three days ago roamed the lands, diligently searching for a rare tea leaf many wanderers had searched for years.

Liu Qingge slightly felt bad as he took the last one in the barren patch.

Liu Qingge as well felt bad when the wanderers behind him had fainted because they travelled years of search of the herb for nothing, but, oh well.

It’s a plant, it’ll grow back like all plants, right?

It must be called “rare” for nothing.

:

Qing Jing Peak…

The disciples of Qing Jing peak have long gotten used to Liu Qingge’s arrivals, although that didn’t mean they wouldn’t run away for their lives whenever he came scowling!

Not like peak lord Qingge ever stopped scowling!

Rumors have speculated around the halls, especially ever since the volume “Stoic warrior drinks morning dew” by the author named “Sleeping Willow’s Flower” was released.

The dear—unknown—author wrote quite the explicit scenes between Liu Qingge and Shen Qingqiu!

It was all over the place! But of course, it was a secret!

Who didn’t have the volume hidden under their bed at night?

Liu Qingge sighed in relief as he saw the usual bamboo house of his shixiong appear, not like he’d worry someone would kidnap his shixiong, haha…hahaha..!

Before Liu Qingge could kick the poor door open, Shen Qingqiu had opened it beforehand.

Shen Qingqiu as always held his fan open, covering the lower part of his face, leaving many to wonder what sort of expression he had behind it.

His elegant posture radiated gracefully no matter the time of day or place.

And what of course would come with the person, their scent would follow.

Liu Qingge had gotten used to it, maybe even anticipating it whenever he came to visit, maybe feeling relieved when he was around it.

Like a part of him…relaxed. That’s all.

The scent of bamboo with a herbal sharp mix of oolong and white tea.

Shen Qingqiu raised an elegant eyebrow as he felt Liu Qingge’s gaze bore into him a little more intensely than usual, “Liu-shidi, took you long enough. Enter, or I’ll lock you out.”

With that, he closed his fan and walked inside.

Liu Qingge nodded and shook his head, trying to regain the noble and honorable thoughts of an esteemed and respected warrior.

Why did he always get distracted, gah!

What was even worse—why did every time he saw his shixiong, he felt his heart pound loudly without mercy in his ears? Damn it!

Liu Qingge followed behind Shen Qingqiu, closing the door before he bowed and presented the blanket fur to Shen Qingqiu, “Shixiong! I hope this shields you through the nights! Winter is approaching!”

Shen Qingqiu should have gotten used to how stiff and awkward Liu Qingge’s words were, but he still hasn’t.

It made his shidi look both pitiful, annoying and…helplessly adorable?

Shen Qingqiu nodded once, taking in the blanket as he examined it with both careful and interested eyes.

The blanket was heavy, indeed it would cover anyone thoroughly through a blizzard.

Big enough to tuck two people or three.

Fur so white and soft, it appeared as if Shen Qingqiu were handling a pile of snow instead of a blanket.

It must have been expensive.

Shen Qingqiu hummed, not taking his eyes off the fur before speaking, “stand up, shidi.”

Liu Qingge let out an “oh” as he once more seemed like he was about to kneel on one knee!

How hard has his honor fallen?

Shen Qingqiu finally fully turned his gaze towards Liu Qingge, “Thank you for the gift, Liu-shidi, I appreciate it.”

Liu Qingge nodded, glad that the first gift was accepted, although he internally cried for the discarded carcass.

Shen Qingqiu added, “Winter comes in four months, Liu-shidi, so it’ll be of use soon, not now…although…are you trying to drown me with so much fur?”

Liu Qingge coughed, “I just wanted to give shixiong the best quality.”

Shen Qingqiu glanced back at the fur, before a realization dawned, “was this why you arrived late at night days ago?”

Shen Qingqiu obviously could recall that time, he’d been quite furious with Liu Qingge!

Liu Qingge begrudgingly nodded in agreement.

Shen Qingqiu rolled his eyes, “if you had said so before. Idiot, now I’ll feel somewhat guilty for slapping you. Although…it'd ruin the element of surprise of what you’ve given me just now.”

Shen Qingqiu should have expected this anyway.

Typical Liu Qingge move.

Shen Qingqiu huffed and walked over to his room, leaving Liu Qingge to his thoughts.

Shen Qingqiu opened the door of his bedroom, gently placing the ridiculously big but obviously soft fur blanket on his bed.

Shen Qingqiu sat on the edge of his bed, stifling a chuckle at how silly his shidi was.

It was slightly…heartwarming.

Liu Qingge took out the stupid rare herb from his pockets, before contemplating if to give it to Shen Qingqiu or not.

It’s not like he’ll do the same as what he did with the fan he bought from the street vendor!

As Shen Qingqiu returned, his eyes slightly widened as he saw what Liu Qingge held in his hand, “is that the ‘Thousand Mile Mist” herb?”

Liu Qingge shrugged, “yeah, oh, so that’s what it’s called…”

Shen Qingqiu nodded, “atrocious name indeed, but it’s so rare…there’s barely any records of it…where did you find it?.”

Liu Qingge shrugged again, “followed the map, asked travellers, travelled and I got it.”

“…”

Shen Qingqiu gave a deadpan expression, but he knew that was how Liu Qingge probably processed thoughts anyway.

Liu Qingge handed it finally to Shen Qingqiu, “for your tea.”

Shen Qingqiu accepted it, glancing at the herb, whose leaves seemed to shine and glimmer under the light, “...thank you,” he whispered.

Liu Qingge hummed, “...well, that’s all.”

Liu Qingge headed towards the kitchen, where like always, Shen Qingqiu prepared him a dish and tea, just how he liked it.

He even started to decline the dishes he’d eat in Bai Zhan peak. It's strange, since food in Qing Jing peak is so bland.

But at least it was made by his shixiong, maybe that gave it flavor?

Was that even a logical thought?

Shen Qingiu followed him, finding a safe cabinet where he could preserve and later study the rare herb, “why don’t you come early tomorrow? No gift needed, we could have breakfast together.”

As Liu Qingge brought the tea to his mouth, he spat and pulled away, looking at Shen Qingqiu, “what?!”

Shen Qingqiu glared, “careful with my floors! What? I just asked you to join me for breakfast!”

Although Shen Qingqiu couldn’t hide the slight blush that formed on his sharp cheeks.

Stupid.

Liu Qingge felt as if he were burning everywhere, why was he reacting this way?

Oh, right, because he’s never had breakfast alone with someone like his shixiong before?!

But, who hasn’t had breakfast with an acquaintance??

It’s like a part of him got excited, but he didn’t want to figure out what part did.

Liu Qingge shook his head, then nodded, “alright, visit tomorrow, now that I remember—grandmother was about to visit me. Excuse me, bye.”

Shen Qingqiu held his temple as Liu Qingge basically ran out the door, rubbing it as he felt a headache approach.

Why did Liu-shidi take everything like a war declaration?!

Shen Qingqiu didn’t mean anything?! What was going through that alpha’s head?!

Liu Qingge slammed the door behind him as he jogged away, pushing any nearby disciple if they cut his way.

This was embarrassing, all the points and days he spent to gather up his torn down honor had vanished the moment he overreacted.

He’s only spent a month bringing gifts to his shixiong and staying over his place, completely normal everyday actions everyone does!

Liu Qingge wanted to cry, but nobles didn't cry!

Now he just probably has to beat up the dummies in the training grounds back at his peak!

Chapter 10: Peak Lord Goes Downhill

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

Liu Qingge rarely woke up late, he was so used to performing morning drills and hunts, it seems waking up early was ingrained inside his brain.

What gratefully woke him up when a disciple knocked at his door, making Liu Qingge grumble as he looked outside at the shining sun.

When Liu Qingge opened the door, he raised a brow when he saw the distressed face of the disciple, “peak lord Liu…there’s a peak lord meeting scheduled for you today…”

Liu Qingge grabbed the collar of the disciple, pulling the frantic disciple towards him, “what? Why didn’t you wake me?”

The disciple trembled in fear, “peak lord Liu! You seemed very tired—it wouldn’t have been correct to disturb your sleep! You have time!”

Liu Qingge held in a growl, “whatever. Is that all?” Liu Qingge let the disciple go with a light push.

“Wait!” The disciple scrambled through his robes, frantically taking out a scroll, “there’s news, your grandmother plans to—“

Liu Qingge rolled his eyes, not wanting to banter with the disciple any longer, “shut it, leave, I’m going to change.”

The disciple began to protest, his shouts muffled as Liu Qingge shut the door behind him. Liu Qingge had to hurry—if not, he didn’t know what would happen the first time he arrived late.

::

Liu Qingge flew on Cheng Luan as he planned to arrive quickly to the meeting hall, whatever the place was called.

Did anyone expect the great Liu Qingge to remember any of those meaningless details?

He didn’t even know half of the names of the peak lords, why bother?

As Liu Qingge arrived, he sat in his place with his infamous scowl, his arms crossed as he awaited a long, long discussion.

Unconsciously, Liu Qingge’s gaze began to scan around the hall, until finally, his eyes landed on Shen Qingqiu.

Shen Qingqiu as always held his fan out whenever these meetings arose, his expression mysterious, elegant, but now Liu Qingge no longer thought of it that way.

Liu Qingge used to think Shen Qingqiu hid his scowls, maybe some muttered curses towards others, but what if his Shixiong was hiding something more? What if it wasn’t necessarily bad things?

Whatever.

Liu Qingge lazily stared at the other peak lords, utterly annoyed whenever he saw the alpha Yue Qingyuan smile at him in acknowledgment.

It seemed fake.

It felt wrong.

Even more whenever Liu Qingge saw Yue Qingyuan try to have small talk with Shen Qingqiu.

Liu Qingge’s scowl deepened, he wasn’t jealous, no, anyone could…visit his Shixiong or talk to him, Liu Qingge begrudgingly guessed.

Anyone but Yue Qingyuan.

As the meeting commenced, Liu Qingge glanced at the doctor peak lord next to him…was his name…Mu Qingfang? Something close.

He glanced around as each peak lord spoke, the one from Wan Jian Peak…the female alpha Qi Qingqi where his sister had gone into…the wimpy omega Shang Qinghua…the Ku Xing peak lord…the Ling You peak…Zhi Ji peak…Zhu Xian…

“Liu-shidi, do you have anything to add?”

Liu Qingge shook off from his daze as he glanced at the one who addressed him, of course, as expected Yue Qingyuan was the one.

Liu Qingge, like always, said the same thing, “nothing to add.”

The rest of the peak lords held themselves, expecting Qi Qingqi or Shen Qingqiu to bark out some comments, but fortunately to their surprise, none followed.

Yue Qingyuan smiled once more, nodding as he spoke, “alright, if that’s it, this discussion has concluded. Does anyone have something to add?”

Everyone shook their heads, Liu Qingge himself could guess everyone else were as anxious as him to leave immediately.

Liu Qingge stormed off the moment everyone began to stand up, rushing towards his Shixiong's way before that annoyingly smiley alpha could.

As Liu Qingge approached Shen Qingqiu, Shen Qingqiu raised a brow, expression hidden from sight with his signature fan “oh? I thought Liu-shidi was far gone back in his peak the moment this meeting was over. Why here?”

Liu Qingge huffed, “to escort you back to your peak.”

Shen Qingqiu rolled his eyes, before protesting in his usual sharp manner, he nodded at Liu Qingge the moment he saw Yue Qingyuan walk towards them.

Shen Qingqiu did his utmost to avoid Yue Qingyuan as much as possible.

Liu Qingge stiffly began to walk beside Shen Qingqiu, both not knowing what to do and not knowing what to say.

What should they talk about?

Shen Qingqiu is a complicated man, and Liu Qingge isn’t good with anything too complex.

Why can’t things be so straightforward?

Liu Qingge felt the matter go downhill as Shen Qingqiu once more took out his fan to cover the lower part of his face.

But if he wanted his shixiong to stay and not have a reason to back out and talk to Yue Qingyuan, he better say something, and soon.

But, how could Liu Qingge be as close to Shen Qingqiu as Yue Qingyuan with his Shixiong if they didn’t even know or understand each other?

Liu Qingge looked up as Shen Qingqiu finally spoke, “so, Liu-shidi, what hobbies do you have?”

It was casual, but Liu Qingge was grateful that Shen Qingqiu took the initiative at least.

Liu Qingge pondered on the question, “…well…I like to spar.”

Shen Qingqiu covered the lower part of his face, although it didn’t fully cover the small laugh that came from him, “I’ll say we all know that, shidi, isn’t there anything else? Or is that all you do?”

Shen Qingqiu could add socially awkward to Liu Qingge, but that’d be too cruel on his hardworking shidi, hm?

Liu Qingge scratched the back of his head, before attempting again, “I sometimes go on hunts…or I sometimes read manuals about fighting techniques…”

Shen Qingqiu raised a brow in amusement, “who knew you could read? Even you make the impossible possible.”

Liu Qingge wanted to ask what that meant, but he didn’t dare risk it.

For now they were at peace with each other's presence, Liu Qingge wouldn’t like anything ruining this nice silence.

What else could intervene?

Before Liu Qingge was about to speak, he heard something shouting his name—no, someone.

As Liu Qingge looked behind him, his eyes widened slightly as he saw the person, a ghost of his past.

Liu Qingge remembered a small boy clinging to his sleeve, begging him not to leave the estate. He remembered promising he’d return.

The young man seemed to be waving, running towards Liu Qingge excitedly, before he suddenly embraced Liu Qingge.

Shen Qingqiu felt a nerve twitch, the stranger who seemed to be so brazen was some young, well looking omega.

Although Shen Qingqiu couldn’t find out why that fact bothered him more.

What was this feeling?

It’s as if Shen Qingqiu was drinking vinegar, the taste bitter.

Liu Qingge stood frozen as the young man embraced him tightly, before whispering, “…Wenyan?”

Zhuo Wenyan looked up at Liu Qingge, a soft grin on his face, “…Qingge, you recognized me? Well of course you did! I’m so unforgettable, right?” Zhuo Wenyan shot Shen Qingqiu a slight smirk.

Liu Qingge slightly pulled away from the embrace, “…last time I saw you, you were fourteen…”

Zhuo Wenyan despite being pushed remained his hold on Liu Qingge, “…it had been some time, huh? Well, let’s make it all up! Why don’t we go out for dinner? I have so much to tell you!”

Liu Qingge hesitated, giving Shen Qingqiu a lost look after Zhuo Wenyan’s offer.

Shen Qingqiu’s grip on his fan tightened, before he closed it with a loud, resounding snap.

“It seems Liu Qingge already had plans with me.” Shen Qingqiu gave a fake apologetic smile, before bowing, “I’m Shen Qingqiu, peak lord of Qing Jing peak, you must be?”

Zhuo Wenyan chuckled, leaving Liu Qingge’s embrace before bowing back, “I’m Zhuo Wenyan, coming from the esteemed noble family Zhuo. And I’m Liu Qingge’s friend.”

Liu Qingge felt his feelings crash around, this was unexpected, why didn’t anyone tell him Zhuo Wenyan would come out of nowhere?!

Zhuo Wenyan then looked at Liu Qingge, “…a-Liu…your grandmother sent me here, she wanted us to eat at the market…do you want me to tell her you declined…?”

Liu Qingge’s fist clenched, this complicated things

A lot..

Liu Qingge was a noble alpha—he was bound to his family. What worried him more was that if he would ever find it in himself to defy his parents.

Would he decline his grandmother’s subtle orders, or would he stay with Shen Qingqiu?

A part of him screamed the latter, but he nevertheless had to obey the former.

Liu Qingge frowned as he looked at Shen Qingqiu, “Shixiong, I’ll visit you tomorrow and I’ll bring you three gifts as an apology…please excuse me.”

Zhuo Wenyan cheered, before wrapping his arm around Liu Qingge, guiding him away before Liu Qingge could say more or turn back.

Shen Qingqiu felt a boiling rage inside him, at some point he was surprised he didn’t put Wenyan in his place.

But with the anger came a stinging pain.

The fact that Liu Qingge chose to go with the other one  instead of with him?

It hurt.

But it’s not like Liu Qingge had to stay with him, but a part of Shen Qingqiu wished he had stayed anyway.

Shen Qingqiu sighed, planning to walk alone to his peak before an annoying, measured voice called out his name.

“Xiao-Jiu…”

Zhuo Wenyan took Liu Qingge to some luxurious restaurant he had talked about during their walk.

Liu Qingge remembered how talkative Zhuo Wenyan was back then, it seemed some things never changed.

As Liu Qingge sat down, Zhuo Wenyan instead of sitting across from him, the latter made his way to sit next to Liu Qingge.

Odd.

Liu Qingge couldn’t help but feel uncomfortable, even more so when Zhuo Wenyan was currently flourishing his scent like a field full of blooming flowers.

The smell of citrus and honey, sweet and addicting.

But not his.

Not the one Liu Qingge subconsciously wanted.

Zhuo Wenyan then glanced up at Liu Qingge, before uttering a confident statement, “so, when’s our wedding?”

Liu Qingge was drinking from the cup, before he slightly choked, eyes widening in disbelief, “what wedding?”

Never had Liu Qingge heard something much more outrageously blunt than him!

Zhuo Wenyan pouted, “what do you mean ‘what wedding?’ Our wedding, silly!”

Liu Qingge honestly didn’t know what to say, or even react, but the snapping point was when Zhuo Wenyan nuzzled into his shoulder.

Liu Qingge wasn’t used to touch, but wouldn’t it be rude to push Zhuo Wenyan away?

When they were children, Zhuo Wenyan would always do so, he’d always nuzzle into Liu Qingge.

Sometimes they even slept together, Zhuo Wenyan saw Liu Qingge as his safe place, and Liu Qingge saw Zhuo Wenyan as the only person he could be vulnerable with.

No expectations between them.

It was all fun and giggles, all until Zhuo Wenyan left.

Liu Qingge never knew why, nor did anyone tell him why.

Zhuo Wenyan mumbled, “…Liu Qingge…why not marry? We’re a perfect match…I’ve known you since little, before you were…this warrior…”

It was true.

Zhuo Wenyan suddenly held Liu Qingge’s head, “…I see you, and I don’t need you to be a warrior or lord for me…” Zhuo Wenyan continued, his voice soft and light, “…I’d be the perfect mate, the perfect omega for you…”

Liu Qingge saw Zhuo Wenyan’s expression, his words seemed so genuine, but did Liu Qingge feel the same?

Liu Qingge never thought about having a mate—many others agreed, with the fact that it sounded both absurd or preposterous.

As Liu Qingge gazed into Zhuo Wenyan’s hopeful, purple eyes, he didn’t have the heart to reject him so bluntly.

Liu Qingge raised his hand on top of Zhuo Wenyan’s head, slowly caressing his hair before speaking as carefully as he could, “I’m not sure…we’d need both your family’s and mine’s blessing, and approval.”

That was true.

Liu Qingge could faintly remember how when they were both young, whenever Zhuo Wenyan needed comfort, he’d caress the top of his head.

Was it wrong not to say no directly?

Zhuo Wenyan wouldn’t take it as a yes, right?

Zhuo Wenyan blinked twice before erupting into soft, amused giggles, “alright! Then we’ll speak to them! After that is taken care of, then we’ll speak again about the matters! It’ll stay pending!”

Liu Qingge noticed how confident Zhuo Wenyan seemed about the prospect.

Zhuo Wenyan tapped Liu Qingge’s forehead playfully, “you’re so smart and thoughtful, a-Liu!”

Liu Qingge couldn’t miss how Zhuo Wenyan’s scent sweetened even more, it fueled Liu Qingge’s confusion even more further.

Liu Qingge never would have imagined seeing Zhuo Wenyan any other way than as his little brother.

Zhuo Wenyan sat up as a servant finally brought in the requested meal, although Liu Qingge didn’t pay attention to what was placed on the table at all.

Zhuo Wenyan ate slowly, mostly staring at Liu Qingge as he did, spending most of his efforts in trying to keep the conversation going with Liu Qingge.

“Where I study, I’m the top student. I’m also my master’s absolute favorite~ What do you think, hm?”

Zhuo Wenyan hoped to see a jealous reaction from Liu Qingge, only to be outright disappointed as he saw Liu Qingge simply nod and lazily pick at his own plate.

Zhuo Wenyan sighed, losing his appetite each time Liu Qingge either appeared distracted, or mumbled a simple “cool,” “good,” “alright,” or “who?”

Could it be that his a-Liu was thinking about that omega peak lord of his?!

Impossible!!!

Zhuo Wenyan wasn’t arrogant, but millions could agree he was outright gorgeous!

A cute face, cute height, cute voice, and a cute body! What else could Liu Qingge want or ask for?

Oh.

That’s it!

He’d just have to make sure Liu Qingge saw how much better he is compared to that old peak lord!

Zhuo Wenyan hummed, laying his head once more on his a-Liu’s shoulder, even starting to subtly scent him.

Liu Qingge stiffened, glancing down at how Zhuo Wenyan softly smiled back at him.

Liu Qingges’s brows furrowed, “what are you doing?”

Zhuo Wenyan began to blink slowly, looping his finger upon a loose strand of Liu Qingge’s hair.

“So…that friend of yours from before, esteemed senior Qingqiu, does he come from a noble family too?”

Surprisingly, Zhuo Wenyan seemed genuinely interested.

Liu Qingge didn’t know why that mattered at all, but he answered anyway, “no…?”

“Ah…what a shame…” Zhuo Wenyan sighed, shrugging as he unlooped the strand of hair in his finger.

“Why?” Liu Qingge asked curiously.

“We could’ve been close friends, but we can’t be close friends with those beneath us, a-Liu! We’re nobles! Our status isn’t compatible.”

Zhuo Wenyan chuckled, speaking in such a carefree tone as if he were saying the plain obvious.

Liu Qingge suddenly felt the awkward feeling turn into a strange sensation of anger.

He didn’t like it when anyone spoke poorly about Shen Qingqiu, even less dare those who’d dare degrade him.

Liu Qingge wouldn’t allow anyone to speak badly about his shixiong, not even his long lost childhood friend.

Liu Qingge had damn limits.

Liu Qingge looked at Zhuo Wenyan, a prominent scowl on his face as he spoke sternly, “please, Wenyan, don’t speak of your elders in that manner.”

Zhuo Wenyan paused, his eyes widening, but before he could say anything, a familiar scent approached.

Liu Qingge immediately knew what that familiar alpha scent was; Liu Mingyan had unexpectedly come as well.

Liu Qingge couldn’t stand anymore visits, but thankfully his sister’s arrival gave him time to recover and distance himself from Zhuo Wenyan.

Liu Qingge had a faint feeling this wouldn’t go well.

Not at all.

Chapter Text

Liu Qingge glanced up, surprised at how Liu Mingyan hadn’t come alone.

His grandmother slowly trailed behind her, elegant, confident as all Liu’s should be, her head held up high as she walked.

Zhuo Wenyan chose for now to ignore how Liu Qingge moved as far as possible from him, instead, standing up and bowing at both newcomers.

“Mingyan! It’s been so long! I hope you fared well throughout these years!”

Liu Mingyan bowed back, “I have, it’s good to see you again, Wenyan.”

Madam Liu with her sharp, wise brows steadily walked over to where Zhuo Wenyan and Liu Qingge stood, “Wenyan, you’ve grown quite well and—Qingge, have you at least complimented your dear old friend?”

Liu Qingge stiffened, nodding, “…I did…I accompanied him to eat out here…”

Madam Liu tutted, “Now, can’t you be an alpha like your sister Mingyan and be the one who initiates things? Have you learned nothing at all? What a coward…”

Liu Qingge glanced down at the floor, mumbling softly, “it won’t happen again, grandmother.”

Zhuo Wenyan waved both his hands, trying to cut off the heavy, tense air, “it’s alright, madam Liu! A-Liu did nothing wrong at all—he did everything well!”

Zhuo Wenyan couldn’t recall madam Liu treating Liu Qingge that way before, she used to be so doting on him.

Madam Liu raised a brow at Zhuo Wenyan’s reassurance, “I hope so.”

Liu Mingyan shifted uncomfortably, “grandmother, can I have a moment with my brother?”

Madam Liu hummed, “alright then. Go ahead, but don’t take too long. It’s improper to leave visitors waiting.”

Liu Mingyan walked over to Liu Qingge and grabbed his arm, not surprised at how easily Liu Qingge allowed himself to be dragged.

Of course Liu Qingge would never protest to leave the strict eyes of their grandmother.

Zhuo Wenyan stared at the Liu siblings curiously, commenting to madam Liu, “dear madam, Liu Mingyan has a mate? Her scent seems mixed!”

Madam Liu smiled proudly, “she does indeed. Her mate even bore a child, we’re all very proud of her.”

Zhuo Wenyan smiled, “ha! I knew she’d do so before Qingge!”

Madam Liu sighed, exasperated, “we all knew. Liu Qingge has much to learn,” her voice ended on a bitter note.

Zhuo Wenyan hummed, not really enjoying the way madam Liu spoke of Liu Qingge, but, it’s a noble’s duty to respect their elders.

It’s not Liu Qingge’s fault for being so docile around his grandmother, but it bothered Zhuo Wenyan.

Zhuo Wenyan hated whenever he had to act submissive around his father.

Madam Liu glanced over Zhuo Wenyan carefully, humming in approval at what she saw.

Madam Liu stared at Zhuo Wenyan’s face, “tell me, child, your parents told us years ago that you had escaped, was that true?”

Zhuo Wenyan’s smile froze, his fists clenching, “ah! Haha! They were mistaken—just exaggerating. I just went to some classes and all…don’t believe their words. You know how my parents are.”

Madam Liu sighed in relief, “good, my child, I worried all that time that you’d actually escaped—what a tragedy!”

Zhuo Wenyan chuckled more lightly, changing the topic as quickly as he could, “I’m happy to see everyone is well! You see…so I wondered if you’d give me and Qingge—“

“Blessings? Our blessings for you to be wed with him? Of course!” Madam Liu said joyfully.

Zhuo Wenyan gasped, his hands clasped in joy, “really? No doubts?!”

Madam Liu shook her head, “gah! I’ve tried millions of matches for Liu Qingge—he either makes them go home crying or they ask us for payment!”

Zhuo Wenyan ‘oh’ed, “I can see that…”

Madam Liu nodded enthusiastically, “who is a better pair than the beautiful Wenyan? You’ve developed so beautifully—and indeed I trust our Qingge with nobody else other than you—who knows him better than you?!”

Zhuo Wenyan felt a pang as the image of Shen Qingqiu came into his mind—but it’s not like that peak lord was close with his a-Liu, right?

Zhuo Wenyan bowed, “I’d be honored—I’ll just convince him!”

Madam Liu softly patted Zhuo Wenyan’s shoulder, “you have my support, child.”

Zhuo Wenyan giggled, although he hoped madam Liu wouldn’t send a message to his parents about his sudden arrival.

Zhuo Wenyan knew what tricks he’ll use to make Liu Qingge crazy for him, and he’ll play dirty if he has to.

Everything Zhuo Wenyan wants he gets.

::

With Liu Mingyan and Liu Qingge…

Liu Mingyan crossed her arms as she stared at her older brothers, “Liu Qingge, what’s wrong with you?”

Liu Qingge looked up at Liu Mingyan, “nothing. Why are you here? Why is grandmother here?”

Liu Mingyan shook her head to herself, “didn’t a disciple report to you this morning about her visit?”

Liu Qingge was about to say no, but  later the annoying voice of the disciple this morning reminded him that indeed, he was alerted.

Wait! There’s news, your grandmother plans to—“

It wasn’t Liu Qingge’s fault that he didn’t have the patience to hear the rest!

Liu Mingyan continued, “you don’t want to be with Wenyan…don’t you?”

Liu Qingge hesitated, “I don’t know—“

Liu Mingyan scowled, “you ‘don’t know’? Qingge, you have to decide, and it better be soon.”

Liu Qingge growled, “why is it with you all pairing me over with everyone else?! Why can’t I be left alone in peace?”

Liu Mingyan rubbed her temple, her brother was too oblivious, as revenge, she’ll release volume two of “Stoic warrior drinks morning dew!”

Liu Mingyan leaned closer at to her brother, “who do you like? Or—you must be attracted to someone if you’re hesitant.”

Liu Qingge furrowed his brows, “what do you mean?”

Liu Mingyan huffed, “I saw you—how you didn’t like being scented by Wenyan.”

Liu Qingge sighed, “it’s because I never like being scented!”

Liu Mingyan continued, “that’s not the point! You used to allow Wenyan freely when we were all children—but you don't like it now.”

Liu Qingge could recall how Zhuo Wenyan whenever he came to stay at the Liu estate, he’d go to Liu Qingge’s room, they’d talk, do random things Liu Qingge couldn’t remember.

But, he could vividly recall how much Zhuo Wenyan liked to scent him.

Liu Qingge didn’t mind back then.

But it’s different now.

Liu Qingge slightly sniffed himself, it reeked of Zhuo Wenyan’s scent, and for one part, his alpha instincts didn’t like it.

What Liu Mingyan said was right.

But did Liu Qingge like anyone?

A part of Liu Qingge knew the answer, but he was too afraid to acknowledge it.

Liu Mingyan softened her expression, “brother, just be more confident—you may be an expert in the art of the sword, but in feelings, you need more sharpening.”

Liu Qingge nodded, “I’ll try.”

Liu Mingyan jerked her head towards the area behind them, “might as well go back and join grandmother, she hates waiting.”

Liu Qingge agreed, “yes. Let’s go.”

Liu Qingge felt drained, not physically, but both mentally and emotionally.

Well, at least out of everyone, his Shixiong would be the only one not mad at him, right?

::

After Liu Qingge left…

Shen Qingqiu froze, clenching his teeth as he glared at Yue Qingyuan, voice as cold as steel, “don’t call me that again.”

Yue Qingyuan sighed, “alright then, is it fine if I accompany you back to your peak?”

Shen Qingqiu fixed the robe of his sleeves, “this shidi doesn’t see it wise to have Zhangmen-Shixiong waste his time in something so trivial.”

Yue Qingyuan shook his head, hands clasped behind his back as he walked slowly towards Shen Qingqiu, “not at all, I see Liu-shidi had unexpectedly left, who is that?”

Shen Qingqiu huffed, quickly walking ahead as he muttered sourly, “gone to eat with an old acquaintance.”

Yue Qingyuan hummed, “how so? It’s quite rude for Liu-shidi to have left so abruptly…”

Shen Qingqiu chose to ignore Yue Qingyuan’s words, staring ahead as he continued to walk.

Yue Qingyuan then asked, “xiao—I mean, Shen-shidi, do you see it alright if I bring you gifts whenever I visit?”

Shen Qingqiu glared at Yue Qingyuan, “I don’t need you to visit me.”

Yue Qingyuan frowned slightly, “but you allow Liu-shidi, don’t you see it quite unfair?”

Shen Qingqiu spoke through clenched teeth, “that’s different.”

Yue Qingyuan raised an eyebrow, “how so?”

Shen Qingqiu ignored the familiar scent from Yue Qingyuan, one he used to feel safe with, now bitter feelings came whenever he smelt it.

He hated that scent. He abhorred it.

Shen Qingqiu faced Yue Qingyuan with a scowl, “Zhangmen-Shixiong, if you excuse me, I’ll be taking my leave.”

Yue Qingyuan sighed, “alright then, go carefully.”

Shen Qingqiu clenched his fists, holding his breath until he saw it fairly far enough from Yue Qingyuan’s scent.

Shen Qingqiu was pissed, yes, pissed.

The stupid, brute, meathead Liu Qingge had the audacity to leave him and go off with Zhuo Wenyan.

Shen Qingqiu mumbled angrily to himself as he finally made it to his bamboo house, he planned what he’d throw at Liu Qingge the next morning when he came.

Or could it be possible that Liu Qingge forgot?

Whatever, Shen Qingqiu was boiling with bitterness, he couldn’t beat the jealousy he had for that other pretty young omega away.

Shen Qingqiu went toward his room, sitting at the edge of the bed as he glanced ahead from his window.

Was Shen Qingqiu a fool to think his shidi was on the same page as him?

Was he a fool for allowing himself to be himself around Liu Qingge?

Shen Qingqiu had never gotten close to any alpha after escaping the Qiu’s, he swore that he’d never fall for one.

Did he fall for the wrong one?

Was this Shen Qingqiu’s fault?

Shen Qingqiu groaned and laid on his bed, glaring at the ceiling, as if that would help him answer all of his doubts and worries.

Shen Qingqiu closed his eyes, already knowing what he’ll do.

He’ll make sure Liu Qingge is damn sorry for what he did.

::

After an encounter with the Liu’s…

Zhuo Wenyan was exhausted after the thrilling encounter with Liu Qingge.

Although it didn’t go as he expected.

Zhuo Wenyan adjusted the cloak he had on himself as he travelled through the bustling market.

It wasn’t a safe place for someone to travel or live in when it’s dark.

The sound of laughter in the brothel’s made Zhuo Wenyan shiver, if it were for him, he wouldn’t have stayed in such a shady place.

Although the inn’s rent was cheap.

Zhuo Wenyan had nowhere else to go, his master barely gave him an allowance enough to stay at the inn for a month.

If Zhuo Wenyan married Liu Qingge, his life would be saved, perfect.

He no longer would have to worry about anything, he’d be where he belongs, among nobles.

Liu Qingge was the perfect alpha, and Zhuo Wenyan the perfect omega.

What a better pair than them?

As Zhuo Wenyan entered his room, he took off his cloak, placing it on the small chair as he sat down.

But there was something that complicated Zhuo Wenyan’s goals:

Shen Qingqiu.

That name sounded familiar…close to…

Shen Jiu.

Zhuo Wenyan’s friend, Qiu Haitang, had mentioned how much time she’s spent hunting that man.

What if they were the same person?

What if Zhuo Wenyan got rid of that peak lord?

Zhuo Wenyan will not give up on Liu Qingge—he’s had his eyes on Liu Qingge ever since they were children.

It’s unfair to even think about having competition—what did that peak lord have that made him more than Zhuo Wenyan?

Of course, if Zhuo Wenyan found out that the old peak lord had committed heinous crimes, all the feelings Liu Qingge harbored for that peak lord would be gone.

Zhuo Wenyan had a plan, he just hoped he wouldn’t have to resort to such measures.

Zhuo Wenyan slowly walked over to his bed, curling into the blanket as he thought about the days where it was all easier.

When he and Liu Qingge were just children, Zhuo Wenyan had everything

Chapter Text

Zhuo Wenyan decided to wake early and rummage through the scrolls of Cang Qiong mountain he bought to study over the peak lords and news.

Zhuo Wenyan finally arrived at the page he wanted to see: Shen Qingqiu.

An omega peak lord of Qing Jing peak, one of the eldest seniors among his generation—the elegant and proper “Xiu Ya” sword.

Zhuo Wenyan chuckled to himself, this would be easy—but he needs confirmation.

Was this Shen Qingqiu the “Shen Jiu” his friend had searched for?

Zhuo Wenyan smirked, if it turned out to be true, he planned what he’d say to his A-Liu, along the lines of,

“That shixiong of yours is a scum, A-Liu! He’s a murderer–a criminal! He killed my friend’s entire clan and her dear brother—who had rescued him! He’s nothing but a slave.”

As they say, once a slave, always a slave.

Zhuo Wenyan grabbed the two bottles lying on his desk–he should put what he learned in his classes to use.

Zhuo Wenyan knew various tricks, the only complication was Liu Qingge’s set on honor and stubbornness.

But, even the most stubborn minded alpha’s would in the end always crumble to their instincts, it all came up to how Zhuo Wenyan could play with them.

He’d make Liu Qingge crazy for him–to the point where his precious A-Liu couldn’t live without him!

Zhuo Wenyan wasn’t obsessed, he just hated how much he had to work for what already belonged to him.

And when the time came, his A-Liu would propose to him, Zhuo Wenyan would be married, pampered, and happy—of course he’d do whatever it took to reach his goal.

If not, all of this was for naught.

Zhuo Wenyan stood up and rummaged through the small bedside cabinet, revealing sent letters from the noble Zhuo family.

Zhuo Wenyan gritted his teeth, he couldn’t allow his parents to know he was here—they’d guess his intentions.

Zhuo Wenyan internally shivered, damn it, if only Zhuo Wenyan could get rid of his father.

Zhuo Wenyan crumpled the letters and brought out a new sheet of paper, he planned to ask Qiu Haitang for a personal visit, he wouldn’t mind if she brought back up.

:.:

Liu Qingge once more when he had returned late at night to his peak, he couldn’t sleep.

His grandmother was too insistent again, he felt the pressure pent up inside of him threaten him to combust.

When Liu Qingge awoke, he sighed in relief as no one came up to bring any reports of missions or peak business—it’s as if everyone was subconsciously aware of his mood.

Liu Qingge planned to visit his shixiong, but he still wasn’t sure if it was a good idea.

What state would Shen Qingqiu be in?

Well, the only thing Liu Qingge notably did wrong was abandon plans with his shixiong and improperly left with another person.

Liu Qingge promised three gifts, that would be enough to regain his shixiong’s favor—they’ve built a decent relationship, maybe a friendship.

Liu Qingge’s grandmother’s threats once more loomed in Liu Qingge’s head, “you’ll at least spend an hour every day with your friend Wenyan, no excuses, don’t be the first coward to shame our Liu name.”

Liu Qingge began to pace around his room, wondering how he’d adjust his schedule to fit Zhuo Wenyan into it.

Liu Qingge after a while of thinking found the solution, he’d tell Zhuo Wenyan clearly: he wasn’t interested in anyone currently.

That would mean Zhuo Wenyan would forget any ideas of asking about marriage, and maybe they’d rekindle their long lost friendship.

Zhuo Wenyan was a more comprehensive friend compared to Shen Qingqiu, so this should be easier.

Liu Qingge had it all thought over: he’d personally invite Shen Qingqiu to his peak today.

With his mind now at ease, Liu Qingge stormed off and flew on Cheng Luan to Shen Qingqiu’s peak, planning along the way what to say, and willing to do anything to regain his shixiong’s trust.

But Liu Qingge couldn’t expect when he arrived the various amounts of judging stares from the Qing Jing peak disciples—what had Liu Qingge committed?

With his brows furrowed, Liu Qingge still was determined to confront his shixiong, sighing in relief as he arrived at the familiar bamboo residence, steadily knocking on the door as he awaited for it to open.

(Liu Qingge sensed that if he kicked it open, it would make things more difficult).

But after a few rounds of knocking, Liu Qingge began to feel a dread of worry as there was no answer—had his shixiong gone out?

Liu Qingge by now has visited Shen Qingqiu in the past for a while, it’d be odd for Shen Qingqiu to not be present at his place.

Before Liu Qingge planned to actually knock the door open with a kick, Shen Qingqiu opened the door, but not fully, his face neutral as he spoke, “what is it you’re here for?”

Liu Qingge was surprised and perplexed  at how Shen Qingqiu’s usual calm scent was tainted with a bitter edge of sourness.

Just like in the past when they were still rivals.

That was unusual to Liu Qingge now, but nevertheless, he had to speak, “I wanted to speak–about yesterday’s occurrence.”

Shen Qingqiu humphed, waving a hand dismissively, “no need, your presence isn’t needed here, if that’s all, then good bye.”

Liu Qingge held the door before Shen Qingqiu could close it, “wait—shixiong, why are you acting so strangely?”

Shen Qingqiu’s expression hardened, “Liu-shidi, could you care to explain your scent?”

Liu Qingge frowned, “what do you mean?”

Shen Qingqiu scowled, “‘what do you mean?’ Oblivious as always.”

Before Liu Qingge could continue, he slightly smelt himself, freezing as it all dawned: Zhuo Wenyan’s scent was still faintly lingering on him.

How?!

Liu Qingge now could understand why he had encountered those strange stares earlier—he’d been for the first time smelling another omega’s scent!

Liu Qingge tried to explain, “shixiong, it isn’t what you think–”

Shen Qingqiu cut Liu Qingge off, “no, it’s alright, what right do I have to reclaim you?”

Liu Qingge sighed, “I just want to understand why you’re mad.”

Shen Qingqiu huffed, utterly offended at Liu Qingge’s painfully true assumption,“me? Mad?”

Liu Qingge nodded, “yes, you’re mad.”

Shen Qingqiu looked ahead, “I’m not, stop assuming what isn’t there. Just leave.”

The hand Liu Qingge had placed on the door happened to push it open further, “no, not until I apologize for my bad manners yesterday.”

Shen Qingqiu glared, “can’t you understand the word ‘leave?’  I don't wish to hear your sorry apologies.”

Liu Qingge mumbled, “just listen—I’m sorry for Zhuo Wenyan interrupting us, and his behavior—he’s just like that. And I’m sorry for abandoning you. It won’t happen again.”

Shen Qingqiu raised a brow skeptically, “don’t make promises you can’t keep.”

“Liu Qingge nodded firmly, resolution set clearly on his eyes, “I promise.”

Shen Qingqiu hesitated, pondering over if he should forgive Liu Qingge this easily. Should he?

If Liu Qingge’s words turned out to be untrue, then Shen Qingqiu would turn out to be the laughingstock who gained nothing but shame.

But his Liu-shidi wasn’t the type to lie—it seemed as if Liu Qingge had never lied in his life, his honor had no use for it.

Shen Qingqiu reluctantly nodded, “apologies…halfly accepted.”

There, Shen Qingqiu wouldn’t make it easy, but neither would he make it too cruelly hard on his shidi.

Shen Qingqiu was overreacting the night before, with a clear head, he could think this over more wisely and truthfully.

Liu Qingge sighed inward in relief, surprised to see he hasn’t totally messed this all up.

Maybe it could all return to normal, just him and his shixiong.

Once more, Liu Qingge will have to work hard for his shixiong’s full apology.

Shen Qingqiu suddenly slammed the door closed, locking it before calmly going to his bedroom.

Liu Qingge’s eyes widened in surprise, not expecting this to happen after what he thought was a successful advance!

“Shen-shixiong! Why did you close it? I thought we were going to talk!”

Shen Qingqiu paused mid-step, speaking at a level that he knew Liu Qingge could hear,

“I’m still quite mad—you’ll have to try better than coming over looking like a pitiful, whining dog whose scent marked by another omega.”

Liu Qingge groaned, “fine! Just be more sensible to me, shixiong!”

Shen Qingqiu chose not to respond, like hell he’d allow Liu Qingge to pass into his place smelling like that!

Shen Qingqiu instincts screamed to him to get rid of that scent of his alpha.

Wait.

“His” alpha?

Shen Qingqiu’s face reddened and ran to his room, burrowing himself in the mess of blankets on his bed as he ignored the bangings of his front door.

Liu Qingge grumbled as it seemed his shixiong mysteriously didn’t answer to him anymore, how unjust!

Did he just hear his shixiong’s footsteps run quickly over to his bedroom? Whatever, there was no use trying anymore. For now.

Liu Qingge begrudgingly began to leave his shixiong’s residence as he mulled over what he has to do next—he can’t kneel down and beg for forgiveness! What alpha did that?

As Shen Qingqiu sensed that Liu Qingge had completely left, he began to lift his head up, glancing around and waiting until he calmed down.

What was that reaction from him just now?!

Not elegant at all! He can’t be having these thoughts, what has gotten into Shen Qingqiu?

One thing was obvious, Shen Qingqiu wouldn’t allow that Zhuo Wenyan to claim Liu Qingge, but he needed some help.

Begrudgingly, Shen Qingqiu seeked to contact Shang Qinghua, how annoying.

Shen Qingqiu could feel a headache incoming.

:.:

Zhuo Wenyan sat across from the beta Qiu Haitang, his arms crossed as he smiled softly, “remember about that man you’re searching for?”

Qiu Haitang pursed her plump lips into a scowl? “Even if I were to be drowned, I’d recognize him—the cold murderer of my dear family.”

Zhuo Wenyan hummed, “I think I’ve found him.”

Qiu Haitang’s eyes widened, shock and eagerness visible in her expression, “where?!”

Zhuo Wenyan tutted, “before I do so—I’ll need something in return, to have it fair.”

Qiu Haitang thought it over, but seeing no risks, she nodded, “alright, it’s fair, what’s your condition?”

Zhuo Wenyan looked around the shabby inn, “I want you to help me set that slave up. Tell my beloved how much misfortune you’ve suffered because of him. And do whatever you wish with him after that.”

Qiu Haitang nodded furiously, “misfortune not brought to me but to others around him…to believe he’s out there living just makes my blood boil.”

Zhuo Wenyan chuckled, “he’s living the best life possible—as the famous peak lord of Qing Jing peak.”

Qiu Haitang gasped, “what? He’s that immortal master?! All this time…”

Zhuo Wenyan slowly shook his head, “ah, indeed life’s unfair—don’t worry, us friends will support each other.”

Qiu Haitang stood up, dusting her traveling robes, “if you excuse me—I need time to process this all—don’t worry, Wenyan, I’ll make sure we both get our revenge.”

Zhuo Wenyan grinned, his voice soft and sincere, “that indeed.”

As Qiu Haitang left, Zhuo Wenyan let out a tired, but smug sigh, indeed he’s too smart.

Zhuo Wenyan had it all planned, it will all work out just as he likes it.

Zhuo Wenyan slowly walked around the room, stopping to look at himself through the mirror, he began to adjust himself, humming a simple tune in mirth and glee.

Now that he’ll have a daily visit with his A-Liu, everything is set in place.

Would the gift Zhuo Wenyan had given to Liu Qingge work? Just one way to find out when they met in person again.

:.:

Liu Mingyan couldn’t help but worry for her older brother, which was rare.

Everyone but Liu Qingge knew about the obsession Zhuo Wenyan had over her older brother.

Well, their parents thought Liu Mingyan didn’t know, but she did, it took her some years to figure it all out.

But Liu Mingyan had other problems to attend—one where she had to manage the time she spent in Xian Shu, and with the time she spent with her child and mate.

Liu Mingyan hoped that someone would reach out to Liu Qingge, but she’ll try to put her part too.

Liu Mingyan looked at the gift that was placed on her bed—said it was a “gift” from Zhuo Wenyan.

Liu Mingyan liked Zhuo Wenyan, but the one she knew from when she was a child could be completely different from the current one.

Although, how different?

:.:

Liu Qingge was currently scrubbing his scent glands and body as hard as possible to get rid of any lingering scent from Zhuo Wenyan.

Liu Qingge’s skin felt on fire after how aggressively he’d scrubbed himself, he hoped it was worth it.

And he hoped it worked.

Liu Qingge closed his eyes, sinking under the water and held his breath.

After a  single minute passed and Liu Qingge felt his chest begin to slightly ache and lungs beg for air, he resurfaced.

Liu Qingge's eyes widened and yelped as he saw Zhuo Wenyan a few feet away, but still—how dishonorable!

Liu Qingge held a growl, “what are you doing here—how did you even get here? Who allowed you to enter here?!”

Zhuo Wenyan covered his mouth with one hand as he almost giggled, the other hiding behind his back, “ah, A-Liu, they let me in! I went to your room to pay a visit but you weren’t there…so I guessed you’d be here!”

Liu Qingge knew everything sounded wrong, but this time, he wouldn’t be fooled!

Liu Qingge pressed, repeating his words again, “how did you get here?”

Zhuo Wenyan pouted, “A-Liu, don’t overthink it! Look,” Zhuo Wenyan revealed what was in his hands, “I have a present for you—!”

A small box, obviously a gift box.

It’s been quite a long time since someone has given Liu Qingge a gift.

Zhuo Wenyan took the lead at Liu Qingge’s startled speechlessness, “I thought it nice to gift you something…in exchange for what happened years ago…”

Liu Qingge raised a brow, “what happened years ago?”

Zhuo Wenyan chuckled lightly, “why don’t you go change, then you can open it and…see.”

Zhuo Wenyan smirked as Liu Qingge’s face reddened, slowly walking away to give Liu Qingge space to get out.

Liu Qingge was utterly stupefied at what occurred, and utterly confused, what just happened?!

Liu Qingge wrapped a towel around himself and ran after Zhuo Wenyan, “hey—! Where are you going?!”

Liu Qingge continued to hear the giggles, echoing around the halls until he finally arrived at his room, where it sounded loudest.

Zhuo Wenyan suddenly came behind Liu Qingge—to close for his liking, “…A-Liu…you’ve been so mean in avoiding me…what a naught alpha~”

Liu Qingge froze, “stop that.”

Zhuo Wenyan purred, “stop what? Stop…” Zhuo Wenyan suddenly ran a hand through Liu Qingge’s chest, his hand closely approaching his hardening length.

Hardened?!

Liu Qingge’s mind was dizzy, being surrounded by Zhuo Wenyan’s scent—he couldn’t think.

All Liu Qingge knew was that he didn’t want this, pushing Zhuo Wenyan sluggishly away, “leave…now.”

Zhuo Wenyan chuckled, “why?”

Liu Qingge growled, “leave.”

Zhuo Wenyan continued, “those words should be fired to yourself, A-Liu~”

Liu Qingge’s brows furrowed in confusion, “what?!

Zhuo Wenyan sighed, “ah, because this is such a vivid dream of yours, A-Liu~ You can’t even let me go here?

:.:

Liu Qingge woke up with a gasp—when had he fallen asleep?

Liu Qingge noticed he had scrubbed himself clean, his scent no longer covered by Zhuo Wenyan’s, but he'd actually fallen asleep!

Did that restless night catch up to him in the worst moment?

He just sat on his bed for a moment, contemplating whether to give his Shixiong something handmade or bought.

Liu Qingge has never had a dream…like that. Even less, with Zhuo Wenyan.

Liu Qingge glanced at the bracelet Zhuo Wenyan had gifted him, could that be the cause?

No, it was a simple, normal looking bracelet—Zhuo Wenyan was an honorable noble.

Liu Qingge could trust Zhuo Wenyan would never do anything unruly to him, that was certain.

So, what had caused that?

Liu Qingge rubbed his temple, if he didn’t think of it, then he’d forget it.

Forget the dream, Liu Qingge should spar, what else could get rid of his troubles but doing what he enjoyed most?

Liu Qingge sighed, that was just a dream, nothing else.

It’s not like he’d experience similar dreams like that one every night, right?

Chapter Text

“Wenyan! Qingge! Where are you both?! Our mothers said it’s time for dinner!”

The young, sweet voice of Liu Mingyan echoed worriedly through the hallways, the clatter of her footsteps tapping against the stone floor as she opened the doors.

A young, Liu Qingge held a small Zhuo Wenyan’s chest protectively as they hid in a closet, staying still as little, small statues as they heard Liu Mingyan approach.

They couldn’t get caught—that’d mean they’d lose less play time.

Zhuo Wenyan whispered, “Liu-gege…how much longer do I have to hold my breath!”

Liu Qingge sighed, “Wenyan…hiding means being quiet, not holding your breath! Who said you couldn’t breathe?”

Zhuo Wenyan exhaled in relief, before embracing Liu Qingge, nuzzling against him in a trusting manner.

Liu Qingge’s slight scowl softened, his body relaxing as he heard Liu Mingyan’s voice die—his sister must have given up.

Liu Qingge opened the door carefully with one hand, the other wrapped around Zhuo Wenyan as they both walked outside of the cramped, dark closet.

Zhuo Wenyan looked up, smiling at Liu Qingge with glee, “We didn’t get caught! So what should we do, A-Liu?!”

Liu Qingge hummed, considering whether to shake Zhuo Wenyan off before replying, “We could go to my room again…”

Zhuo Wenyan pouted, “What if we’re caught there?!”

Liu Qingge mentally slapped himself, of course what he suggested was stupid! They could get caught.

But…it’s not like it’d be the first place his parents looked for—Liu Mingyan just came looking from there, ruling out his quarters.

Liu Qingge let go of Zhuo Wenyan and held his friend's small wrists, “Fine, what if I allow you to go to my bed? Deal?”

Liu Qingge wasn’t the type to allow his parents or even his own sister to his bed—but Zhuo Wenyan always whines and insists in doing so.

Zhuo Wenyan’s purple eyes lightened up, nodding enthusiastically at the idea of going to his Liu-gege’s off limits bed!

Zhuo Wenyan shook off Liu Qingge’s grip on his wrists and began to run carelessly and spoke excitedly, “Fine, you win! Beat you to your room!”

Liu Qingge’s eyes widened in surprise before shaking his head and chasing Zhuo Wenyan, “Hey! You’re being too loud!”

Zhuo Wenyan smirked, shouting back, “Now who's being loud? You’re screaming!”

Liu Qingge gritted his teeth, but he couldn’t help the small smile creeping over his face, Zhuo Wenyan was the only one he could tolerate after all.

As both boys arrived at Liu Qingge’s quarters, Zhuo Wenyan skipped and plunged into Liu Qingge’s large bed, rolling himself through the blankets.

Liu Qingge huffed, his arms crossed as he looked at Zhuo Wenyan, “How improper—you look like a spring roll.”

Zhuo Wenyan giggled, “Then I’m your favorite spring roll! Say it!”

Liu Qingge grumbled, approaching the bed as he sat on the edge, “Fine, my tolerated spring roll then.”

Zhuo Wenyan nodded, before suddenly pouncing over Liu Qingge, catching him off guard.

Liu Qingge yelped as he was dragged into the blankets alongside Zhuo Wenyan, but he’d be nice, because he wasn’t even resisting.

Zhuo Wenyan grinned, “Caught you!”

Liu Qingge sighed as he looked at the ceiling, “Yes, you did.”

Zhuo Wenyan resumed his habit of nuzzling and snuggling into Liu Qingge, his arms wrapped tightly around his Liu-gege.

Zhuo Wenyan whispered softly, “Liu-gege, will we always be together?”

Liu Qingge faced Zhuo Wenyan, he couldn’t kiss the note of vulnerability of his friend’s face, for some reason, it hurt to glance at it.

Liu Qingge wasn’t good at interacting with people…but Zhuo Wenyan could be an exception, right?

Liu Qingge searched his mind for the right words, only to say in the end, “Of course, in my honor.”

Zhuo Wenyan hummed, though the words were simple, he trusted his Liu-gege wholeheartedly, “Okay then, you said it…don’t go back on it.”

Liu Qingge smiled softly, “mn.”

Chapter Text

Liu Qingge glared at the scroll his grandmother sent, alerting that he was required to attend a Liu family reunion.

Set in two weeks.

Of course, Liu Qingge may not be as smart as others, but he knew what this meant; they’d once more attempt to find Liu Qingge a mate.

Liu Qingge had made it clear, but for some reason, no one listened.

Liu Qingge stood from his desk and clasped his hands behind him as he paced in thought, wondering how he’d avoid a blind date again.

He’d say he’s ill, no, too predictable.

He could say he’s on a mission—that’s possible, but wouldn’t his grandmother tell him to change it?

He could say he originally planned a day with Shen Qingqiu…

Although, would Shen Qingqiu be up to it? Or would his Shixiong out of spite tell him no.

Anyway, it seemed the things between them weren't still resolved. How could he fix it?

Liu Qingge anyways had plans from now on with Zhuo Wenyan, all thanks to his grandmother, damn it.

Liu Qingge stiffened as he heard a knock on the door, Zhuo Wenyan’s figure entering the room, along with the almost tantalizing sweet scent of his.

Liu Qingge internally shivered, the cloying sweetness echoing the dream he had.

Zhuo Wenyan bowed and gave a small, worried look, “A-Liu, is something the matter? You seem…distracted.”’

Liu Qingge frowned, “I’m not distracted.”

Zhuo Wenyan chuckled, “Alright then, now, what shall we do today? I was planning on going out—“

Liu Qingge cut Zhuo Wenyan off, “No, no going out, inside.”

Zhuo Wenyan raised a brow but didn’t comment further.

Liu Qingge cleared his throat before explaining, “I have a…um…er…a mission, one that requires me to be along the radar afterwards.”

Zhuo Wenyan hummed, clearly not believing Liu Qingge fully, “Alright!” Zhuo Wenyan made his way towards Liu Qingge’ desk, sitting on top of it before revealing something from his pockets.

Liu Qingge’s face couldn’t help but soften as he glanced at the object in Zhuo Wenyan’s hands; A Liu crest sigil.

Zhuo Wenyan whispered, “Remember? When you gave this to me?”

Of course, how could Liu Qingge forget?

Although, maybe he’d have never remembered if Zhuo Wenyan hadn’t shown him it.

The sound of a child whining, the warmth of an embrace, the whisper of young promises stormed through Liu Qingge’s head like a forgotten memory.

Zhuo Wenyan tucked it back in his pocket, “I kept it, as a reminder—even back then, it reminded me to be brave.”

Liu Qingge looked away, he didn’t have time to deal with their emotional pasts, “Alright…”

Zhuo Wenyan tilted his head in confusion, “‘Alright?’ You’re still so bad at communicating…it’s kinda funny.”

Zhuo Wenyan sighed, looking away as he lowered his voice into a gentle, honey-laced whisper, “I missed you, you know that, right?”

Liu Qingge’s breath hitched at the personal confession, he tried to find Zhuo Wenyan’s gaze as he replied, “then why did you leave?”

Zhuo Wenyan pursed his lips, walking towards the edge of the room as he looked over the cabinets, “I didn’t choose to leave, is it true you didn’t know?”

Liu Qingge’s gaze followed Zhuo Wenyan’s movements, he shook his head, “no, I was told that we just weren’t allowed to hang out together.”

Zhuo Wenyan for the first time looked at Liu Qingge pointedly, “that's it? Is that easy? You didn’t even ask why?”

Liu Qingge felt the familiar weight of guilt overcoming him, “it was improper to question the authority of my seniors.”

Zhuo Wenyan softened his expression, slowly strolling towards Liu Qingge, “I want you, Qingge-gege, I’ve known you since we could both walk, I just wanted that to be set clear.”

Liu Qingge gulped at the bluntness, “I think it’s time for you to leave, Wenyan.”

Zhuo Wenyan smiled, nodding fervently as he walked towards the door, “alright! I’ll visit you tomorrow!”

Liu Qingge held his breath until any last traces of Zhuo Wenyan’s left, shoulder slumping as he held his temple; why was the Zhuo Wenyan from now so different from the one back then?

Yes, he probably was brazen and clingy towards Liu Qingge, but this just crossed the line…

Liu Qingge hadn’t even remembered that the crest sigil of Zhuo Wenyan hadn’t shown him.

Although, maybe a deep, dark part of him did, he refused to remember the thoughts that came with the gift.

For the first time, Liu Qingge allowed himself to recount the past he had with the clingy, adorable childish Zhuo Wenyan.

:

“Wenyan! Qingge! Where are you both?! Our mothers said it’s time for dinner!”

The young, sweet voice of Liu Mingyan echoed worriedly through the hallways, the clatter of her footsteps tapping against the stone floor as she opened the doors.

:

:

Liu Qingge was thirteen, barely a few months ago, he’d presented as an alpha.

Nobles usually presented early, so it wasn’t any surprise for anyone the moment it occurred.

It was long expected.

He now carried an inherited duty, the weight of the Liu's name and honor felt heavily against his shoulders.

So Liu Qingge began to bury it by training himself to the bone.

Liu Qingge  couldn’t even face his own father nor mother;he’d least likely face his grandparents—why did it feel like they expected so much from him?

Liu Mingyan, his little sister, was always there for him, that he knew.

But sometimes things had to be done alone.

Liu Qingge just came back from the woods, the rain began to drizzle, but Liu Qingge didn’t freeze because of the cold, no, because someone he knew was in the Liu estate’s gates.

That person was crying.

Liu Qingge approached Zhuo Wenyan, a few years younger than him, but beautiful as ever.

Liu Qingge hesitated, arms crossed as he mumbled stiffly, “Wenyan…why are you out here alone? How improper, you’ll get wet…”

Zhuo Wenyan peeked through his hands, hastily fixing his posture before speaking with his soft, trembling clear voice, “I’m sorry…sorry Qingge-gege…can you…can you hold me for a second?”

Liu Qingge sighed tiredly, nodding heavily as he reluctantly sat down, pulling Zhuo Wenyan into his embrace.

Zhuo Wenyan buried his face deeply into Liu Qingge’s chest, body shivering and drenched from the cold, unforgiving rain, “Qingge…am I…a disappointment?”

Liu Qingge stiffened, teeth gritted as he spoke gravely, “never! Who dared speak to you like that?! Tell me, now.”

Who’d dare speak to his friend like this, unforgivable!

Zhuo Wenyan shook his head, “no, no one…I just…”

Liu Qingge’s brows furrowed in confusion, “then what?”

Zhuo Wenyan hesitantly looked up at Liu Qingge, searching the alpha’s face before mumbling, “just a thought, nothing else…”

Liu Qingge huffed, “don’t lie to me, I know you, what happened?”

Zhuo Wenyan mustered a small smile, though weak, “I promise…just…hold me for a while, I’ll be all right.”

Liu Qingge wanted to ask more, but he saw it unwise at the moment, so he did what he did best; he stayed quiet.

Zhuo Wenyan nuzzled himself deeper into Liu Qingge, basking in the alpha’s scent and warmth.

Zhuo Wenyan murmured softly, “do you think we’ll always be together like this?”

Liu Qingge once again looked back down at Zhuo Wenyan, “I guess so…why not?”

Whatever had bothered Zhuo Wenyan early seemed to vanish at Liu Qingge’s words, a now more genuine smile spread through his face, “I’ll take you words, don’t you back down on it.”

Liu Qingge humphed and rolled his eyes, “I never back on my promises.”

:

:

Back at Qing Jing Peak

Shen Qingqiu calmly read over the reports sent from his disciples, but for some reason, he felt strangely uneasy.

Be it his right hand constantly tapping on the bamboo table or how sour his scent was, he didn’t dare admit the cause of it.

He was a peak lord, not some omega who should be playing cat and mouse with a knot headed alpha like Liu Qingge.

Shen Qingqiu lazily looked up as someone knocked at his door, carefully placing the scroll down as he spoke with bare restraint, “Zhangmen-Shixiong, is there a reason for your sudden, unannounced visit?”

Yue Qingyuan opened the door with ease, hands clasped behind his back as he entered, “Shen-shidi, I came over because I’m worried.”

Shen Qingqiu smiled bitterly, “I don’t think it’s as important as you interrupting my peace.”

Yue Qingyuan sighed, making his way to sit next to Shen Qingqiu, although keeping a decent distance, enough for Shen Qingqiu not to balk at the alpha’s scent, “Shen-shidi, your disciples have noticed your strange behavior, to the point they had the urge to bring me aware of this notice.”

Shen Qingqiu pursed his lips, “my disciples are preaching the graceful path of detachment, not one of gossip.”

Yue Qingyuan raised a brow, “Now tell me, what is it that bothers you?”

Shen Qingqiu looked at the view outside the window, green eyes sharply analyzing the bamboo forest, “there’s nothing here to worry you, now, if you could attend to other matters away from here…”

Yue Qingyuan interrupted, “Is this about Liu-Shidi, am I right?”

Shen Qingqiu closed his eyes, pondering over how he’d keep his dignity, “what makes you assume that?”

Yue Qingyuan’s gaze held a weight, one of protectiveness, regret, and longing, one Shen Qingqiu would snap at if he hadn’t kept his eyes closed, “everyone has eyes, Shen-shidi, I just don’t want you to feel like a second option, you shouldn’t be played with.”

“So what is he even offering?” Shen Qingqiu thought inwardly.

Shen Qingqiu’s eyes snapped open, voice edged with slight defensiveness, “who gave you permission to interpret whatever this is? It doesn’t concern you, Zhangmen-Shixiong.”

Yue Qingyuan whispered, “Xiao-Jiu, I want what’s best for you.”

Shen Qingqiu froze, words layered with thin, pricking ice, “I told you to never call me that again, what am I supposed to do for you to understand!?”

Yue Qingyuan paused as he heard voices outside the bamboo house, ones that sound like they didn’t bring any great news

Shen Qingqiu stood up and began to walk, eyes narrowing as Yue Qingyuan followed and blocked him, “Let me take care of this, Shen-shidi.”

Shen Qingqiu tsked, “what am I? Some helpless maiden you see fit to save like a hero? Get lost.”

Shen Qingqiu pushed past Yue Qingyuan and opened the door, he paused as he studied the scenery:

He saw how his own disciples guarded and argued with the newcomers, who seemed to be like wandering cultivators, in the lead, stood a young, beautiful beta lady.

It’s as if a ghost had resurfaced in front of Shen Qingqiu’s eyes, he couldn’t even take his gaze away from the woman glare as Yue Qingyuan called out to Shen Qingqiu, he hadn’t even noticed how his scent had spiked.

Who else would that lady be other than Qiu Haitang?

Chapter Text

Qiu Haitang’s blossom plump lips curved into a prominent scowl, delicate brows furrowed as she pointed at Shen Qingqiu,

“degenerate scum! You dare dally around safely in between Cang Qiong mountains, having them obscure your crimes!”

Yue Qingyuan gave a respectful smile, approaching Qiu Haitang and her company with a measured tone, “Now, let’s not point accusations without reason—why is it I haven’t been notified of your arrival to give permission for your arrival?”

Shen Qingqiu was currently pondering over if he should run or stand by, but no longer was he that helpless little slave of that maniatic and crazy Qiu Jianluo.

No longer was he at the mercy of anyone, so he’d face her with dignity.

Shen Qingqiu mustered enough courage to intervene, walking towards Qiu Haitang with an elegant air of grace as he addressed the alpha sect leader,  “Zhangmen-shixiong, there is no need to interfere, Shen-shidi will take care of this.”

Qiu Haitang lifted her head, “Hah! What a nice act of yours, but beware, this insane ‘peak lord’ hides the intentions of a bitter snake!”

Shen Qingqiu’s disciples had wished to go forward and defend the name of their shizun, but guessing by the serious expression he gave him, they thought better and stood silent.

Shen Qingqiu’s green eyes narrowed at Qiu Haitang, “if you came here to cause a ruckus, then leave, here, time won’t be wasted with unwelcome guests.”

Qiu Haitang gave a prominent scowl, arms crossed as she glared at Shen Qingqiu, she then looked at Yue Qingyuan, “Sect leader, this one isn’t pointing false accusations but the mere truth! If you let this one explain, she guarantees to be speaking nothing but the truth!”

Yue Qingyuan hesitated, if whatever Qiu Haitang said was true, and if indeed was bad news, couldn’t this make Cang Qiong mountain lose face?

Shen Qingqiu grudgingly looked at Yue Qingyuan, a slow nod followed, as if allowing him to proceed.

Yue Qingyuan sighed and nodded at the beta, “permission granted.”

Qiu Haitang internally chuckled, whatever she had planned with Zhuo Wenyan was now set in place, the scum’s doom was sure to come!

Qiu Haitang cleared her throat, performing the face of a disgraced, woeful maiden, “My noble brother had taken in a street slave into our noble household! My brother offered the boy a roof to stay warm in, a bed, and he had even taught him everything that lowlife needed!”

Shen Qingqiu underneath his sleeves held his hand steady, afraid to reveal how badly he was trembling.

Qiu Haitang continued, her voice rising and eyes flickering with a determined fire, “My brother had even told me I was destined to marry this boy, and with joy and pity I accepted…but that monster…that vial scum, betrayed our family and slaughtered everyone at nightfall!”

Various gasps erupted from the crowd, Shen Qingqiu thought he was mentally prepared, but in the end he couldn’t face the various questioning stares.

He searched for Yue Qingyuan’s gaze, but he felt no relief when he saw that alpha’s pitiful face.

A soft, vulnerable confession echoed within Shen Qingqiu, “I want Liu Qingge…”

But after that thought passed, Shen Qingqiu mentally slapped himself, “what do you mean you want him?! We're mad at him, remember?”

Qiu Haitang’s sweet voice had risen into its ultimate limit, she desperately wanted everyone to listen and upbringing justice, “the one who had slaughtered the Qiu noble house is none other than your peak lord Shen Qingqiu! The scum of all scums!”

Yue Qingyuan saw it enough, he approached Qiu Haitang, “what proof do you have? Cang Qiong mountain does not tolerate any falsehood.”

Qiu Haitaing’s face crumpled, “Well, I do have proof!” She pointed towards the lackeys behind her, a shot beta man came up front, bowing and speaking with confidence, “I was out the night when the estate was burned to a crisp! The only figure who I saw escaping seemed similar to that peak lord!”

The lackeys behind nodded and expressed their agreement, some aside bickering with the disciples from Qing Jing peak.

Shen Qingqiu felt the distance far between him and Qiu Haitang, although he wished to flee, for both his sake and the others, he’d face her head on!

Shen Qingqiu ignored Yue Qingyuan’s silent pleas, closing the distance between him and Qiu Haitang, he could fully see how the rim of her eyes were red, “is that all you have?”

Qiu Haitang sneered, “you dare speak to me like we’re equals?!”

Shen Qingqiu sharply retired back, “you use the clothes of a mere wanderer, and I of a peak lord, now why would you be my equal?”

Qiu Haitang bit back the urge to strangle the damn arrogant omega, “Well, I’ll avenge the name and honor of my family—admit it! Admit you did it!”

Shen Qingqiu pursed his lips, scanning the area around them, seeing if they were willing to believe her crazed words.

Shen Qingqiu saw Yue Qingyuan’s nod, he even saw Shang Qinghua within the crowd.

“Here to see my downfall?” Shen Qingqiu whispered to himself sarcastically.

Shen Qingqiu looked at Qiu Haitang straight in the eye, posture proud, as he finally openly admitted, “yes, I did.”

Qiu Haitang couldn’t help the smile that spread from her mouth the moment she saw Zhuo Wenyan come with Liu Qingge.

Just as planned.

She finally had Shen Jiu’s confession!

Now it was time for her to stir this boiling pot.

While it was hot, hot.

Qiu Haitiang looked at everyone, “see! He confessed to have cruelly abused and in cold blood killed the innocent family and members of the Qiu’s!”

Liu Qingge didn’t understand why there was a crowd.

Even more confusing was how everyone was out in front of his shixiong’s residence, like it was some stupid party, meanwhile Liu Qingge only intended to make amends with the peak lord.

But after pushing past the crowd while Zhuo Wenyan held his arm, the one who had rushed him here, the alpha froze as he caught the last few words.

Liu Qingge tried to look for Shen Qingqiu’s face, anything, but when his shixiong’s gaze found his, he could see the actual dread from within those green jade eyes.

“Is it true?” Liu Qingge wanted to ask.

Could it be possible that Shen Qingqiu had indeed killed innocents out of greed?

No.

Liu Qingge refused to believe his shixiong would do that.

Impossible.

And he’d stand by him at this moment.

Zhuo Wenyan turned to look at Liu Qingge’s firm scowl, he immediately made eye contact with Qiu Haitang, nodding to proceed.

Qiu Haitaing then exclaimed loudly, brows imitating an expression of surprise, “Do you also confess to have trained under the infamous criminal, Wu Yanzi?!”

Shen Qingqiu had stilled, breath hitching as he hadn’t expected the table to turn so quickly.

Wasn’t he the one at an advantage a few moments ago?

How did they know?

Who was the one who told her that?

Liu Qingge shook off the iron grip Zhuo Wenyan had on him, pushing past everyone until he finally made it to Shen Qingqiu’s side, scent flaring as he stood protectively between Shen Qingqiu and Qiu Haitang.

Liu Qingge then said with a haughty, mocking tone, “Leave, now, you have no reason to be here causing a ruction while spouting nonsense!”

Shen Qingqiu’s distressed scent unconsciously calmed down at the Bai Zhan peak lord’s presence, once hard, stiff shoulders relaxing at the alpha’s scent.

Shen Qingqiu didn’t think Liu Qingge would actually come to defend him.

It seemed that the idiot alpha brute of his shidi always came to prove him wrong.

Qiu Haitang looked up at Liu Qingge, slightly backing off as she exclaimed, “I said I’d say nothing but the truth, is it—“

Someone from within the crowd shakily cut in, “coming in without notice breaks the protocol of Cang Qiong mountain, especially defying a peak lord…”

Everyone looked at the direction the speaker came from, and as Shen Qingqiu guessed, the one who spoke was Shang Qinghua.

Shen Qingqiu mumbled inwardly to himself as he looked at Shang Qinghua, “oh, so he can talk.”

Yue Qingyuan firmly nodded at the An Ding peak lord’s words, hands no longer clasped behind his back as he solemnly walked towards Qiu Haitang, “accusing a peak lord of random crimes with no evidence, I’m afraid we can’t let you leave so easily if you’ll continue on this ruckus.”

Qiu Haitang got rid of her old facade and clenched her fists, foot stomping in the ground as her face reddened, “then question me! I don’t fear your judgment!”

Liu Qingge gave out a cold laugh, looking straight into the beta’s eyes, “you claim the Qing Jing peak lord committed a massacre, but the only proof you offered was an odd claim from on of your ‘witness,’ who said to have seen his figure in the plain dark; how is that possible? It doesn’t match.”

Qiu Haitang was stupefied.

Qiu Haitang looked around, seeing the nod of agreement at the alpha’s words, suspicion rippling all over the crowd at hers.

No longer were they paying attention to what she was saying.

Qiu Haitang was shocked, gnashing her teeth as she thought inwardly, “This is impossible! That scum has the whole mountain defending him!”

The Qing Jing peak disciples no longer could hold silent, some even brazenly began to chase Qiu Haitang’s lackeys away, some scurrying off like the cowards they were.

Shen Qingqiu had one suspicion, so he looked at the familiar figure that had brought iu Qingge before he came to his side. Zhuo Wenyan’s calculating gaze landed on Shen Qingqiu.

Zhuo Wenyan’s delicate face twisted like he had eaten a bitter fruit.

For some reason, Shen Qingqiu let out a small, sly smirk at the sight.

Zhuo Wenyan huffed and began to leave, tossing his hair behind him as he did.

Right at the moment Yue Qingyuan declared, voice layered with a subtle warning, “lady Qiu, I believe it’s time for you and your company to leave.”

Qiu Haitang wasn’t dumb, she knew what this implied, but that didn’t mean it made this any less infuriating.

Qiu Haitang’s pale cheeks were tainted with a blossoming, heated red, avoiding the various gazes and jeering before she gave The Qing Jing peak lord one last, dirty look, before grudgingly leaving the area.

Yue Qingyuan’s gaze followed the beta’s until her figure vanished, for some reason whatever she had said had unintentionally ringed a bell.

Reminding him of a past that involved him and Shen Jiu, a past he wished he could fix.

Liu Qingge steadily looked at Shen Qingqiu, he then held the omega’s wrist as he wordlessly guided him away from the mob; Shen Qingqiu let himself be dragged, mind and body numb as they left the commotion and noise.

As both peak lords arrived at the back of the bamboo house, Liu Qingge let go of the dazed omega’s hand, “Shen-Shixiong, tell me the truth. Was she lying?”

Shen Qingqiu’s eyes widened as Liu Qingge’s worried tone snapped him out of his spell, body cold as if a basin of icy, freezing water had fallen over him.

He couldn’t help how he slightly shivered, scent subsiding as he looked away.

Shen Qingqiu wasn’t sure whether he should tell the truth to his shidi or not, but it wasn’t any different from whatever he confessed to all Cang Qiong mountain.

But in the end, Shen Qingqiu’s throat felt dry as sand.

Liu Qingge noticed how his Shixiong’s sweet omega scent was tinged with stress and guardedness, so he took a step closer.

Liu Qingge softened his expression, scent warming and voice lowering into a whisper, “it’s alright, I have no reason to judge you.”

Shen Qingqiu allowed himself to subtly breathe in Liu Qingge’s scent.

The scent of a grounding storm, one in which Shen Qingqiu could anchor himself from.

Shen Qingqiu gave a slight nod, making full eye contact with the alpha “It’s true.”

Liu Qingge pursed his lips, arms crossing as he glanced all over Shen Qingqiu.

Then Liu Qingge shook his head in disbelief, letting out a soft, “eh?”

He wasn’t exactly expecting Shen Qingqiu to say it was true.

Shen Qingqiu felt hyperaware at the moment, his eyes slightly squeezed as if anticipating any rejection, he couldn’t help how his instincts stirred and scanned Liu Qingge’s scent and emotions.

Some part of Shen Qingqiu whispered, “what if he isn’t interested in me after this?”

Liu Qingge took in a deep exhale, uncrossing his arms, “Alright then; we’ll make sure no one knows of this outside Cang Qiong mountains.”

Shen Qingqiu's eyes widened, “are you serious?”

Only a dumb, blind fool would say Liu Qingge wasn’t, since the alpha had his usually blank, scowling expression.

By now, Shen Qingqiu learned it was his shidi’s determined expression.

Shen Qingqiu felt his face soften, as he was about to take a step closer, for some reason something snapped.

Wasn’t he still supposed to be mad with his shidi?

Shen Qingqiu took several steps back before glaring, “don’t think I will soften like this with you all the time! You player!”

Liu Qingge paused, brows furrowing, “what happened?”

Shen Qingqiu tsked, “Don't play dumb! Did you forget you should be apologizing to me?”

Ah, that’s what it was.

Liu Qingge nodded, “I know…but I forgot your present.”

Shen Qingqiu always pretended he hated the gifts, or rather not hated, just that he didn’t need them.

But both Shen Qingqiu and Liu Qingge knew he wasn’t fooling anyone.

Shen Qingqiu looked ahead, “I’ll take my leave, it’s been enough noise today; I don’t need you to add to it.”

Liu Qingge internally scolded himself as he saw his shixiong leave, for some reason some part of him wanted the latter to stay.

But what right did he have to ask that?

Now that he thought of it, Liu Qingge hadn’t seen Zhuo Wenyan in the crowd as he and Shen Qingqiu left.

Odd.

Liu Qingge sighed and began to walk away, pausing as he felt a familiar alpha presence, Yue Qingyuan’s calm voice interrupting the silence, “Liu-shidi, won’t you mind to come with me and speak about some matters?”
