Learn to Fly

Summary:

Based on Baraba_Lazuli's comic of Meet the Addams AU- which is based on the Movie Meet the Robinsons.

Enid, after a phone call from her mother, tries to imagine what a future with Wednesday could look like.
Vega Addams is home on break from Nevermore and she misses her mom, who is stuck working. She just wants to make sure that her mom is ok after some words are exchanged.
Due to a magical mishap, past and future meet.
Together they have to try to get Enid back to her own time all the while trying to hide her identity from the Addams family, including Wednesday; however, hiding Enid's identity is not the greatest secret Vega has to try and keep; it's rather how Enid is related to the family that is the kicker.
Can the past and future reconcile? Can a massive secret be kept?

Notes:

As stated in the summary: this fanfic is based on Barbara_Lazuli's comic of Meet the Addams AU- which is based on the Movie Meet the Robinsons. I did ask permission to use the concept and her original characters, Vega and Sora for this fic. All credit goes to her. I will post the link to her comic which you can (and honestly should) read. It is extremely cute.

Chapter Text

Now, I'm looking to the sky to save me

Looking for a sign of life

Looking for something to help me burn out bright

And I'm looking for a complication

Looking 'cause I'm tired of lyin'

Make my way back home when I learn to fly high

Enid slammed the door to their dorm room closed and took a deep breath. Her mind was in whirling in a panic. She could imagine her wolf pacing back and forth in agitation inside of her. Sliding down the barrier that separated her from the outside world, she leaned her head back on the dark wood desperate to keep herself from howling in frustration. How could she have been so stupid?!

A low growl escaped her as she closes her eyes, one of her fangs biting into her lip as she sees the scene in her head: the phone call with her mother before lunch which the after effects left her embarrassing herself in front of her friends; but that was not the worse part, this incident involved a Raven which is what led to this downward spiral. She was for certain that Wednesday was going to kill her…or worse…request a new roommate. This thought caused the wolf inside to wail in excruciating pain. Her hand flew to her chest as she felt that heartbreak, claws nearly piercing through the fabric of her school blazer. Just the mere thought of losing her mate in any form sent her reeling.

“Ok…ok Sinclair. Wolf-up; take a deep breath.” She muttered to herself as she tries to focus on her breathing. She shakily inhales and holds it for a few seconds before releasing it. She does this a few more times before she feels any calmer, “Ok…” she says to no one, thanking whatever higher power there was that Thing was not at Nevermore right now to see this, “Ok…I got this…spiraling for no reason…and talking to myself. God I am so screwed.”

Getting up from the door, certain that Wednesday was not going to come barging in at any moment, she places her bag on her bed before collapsing into it, staring at her roommate’s side of the room with longing. The wolf let out a whine, turning over to stare up at the fairy lights on the ceiling.

Now that you’ve successfully wolfed out a few times, it is time to consider an appropriate mate.” Her mother’s words resonated in her mind as she recalls the phone call again. Why her mother felt the need to call her in the middle of the day to say this was beyond her.

Another growl escaped her as she covered her eyes. Mate?! She already had one! Not that she had let her mother know that fact for she had hung up as soon as that sentence was uttered. A whine escapes her as she rolls back over to her side, once more facing the dark side of the room; Enid feels her eyes water, she had not even realized Wednesday was her mate until recently.

She closed her eyes and squeezed one of her plushies for comfort and she remained like that until she had heard pounding footsteps nearby. Oh shit! She jumped up from the bed and backed away from the door to stand by the window, this was it…Wednesday was going to freak. She glances one more time, inhaling the scent of ink, and old books. What she would not give to see her future where she was happy and with Wednesday. Taking a deep breath, she waits for her impending doom when suddenly the floor gives out underneath her and she feels herself falling through the floor and into total blackness.

The door to the room slams open just as everything returns to normal, “Sinclair!” Wednesday yells out as she looks at the empty room not noticing that anything was out of place. She lets out a low growl of frustration and goes to the bathroom, “Enid!” she knocks on the door roughly, but not hearing a response, she opens the door and sees that it is also empty.

Her hands go on her hips and glares at the empty room. Glancing at the clock on her nightstand, she shakes her head, “I swear to Lucifer when I find that infuriating werewolf…” she lets the sentence trail off, as she makes her way to finish the rest of the day; once she sees Enid, she is going to give that blonde a piece of her mind.

-Moments earlier (28 years into the future)-

“Vega, are you sure this is a good idea?” A girl with long dark hair asks hesitantly. She feels tapping on her shoulder and looks at the severed hand as it signs something which she just gives a concerned expression in return.

The other girl in the room, who has dark hair with pink tips just gives a fanged smile, “Of course, I am sure Sora. When have I ever been wrong before?”

“Uh-”

“Don’t answer that!” She says automatically as she finishes drawing a circle on the wall in her room.

The severed hand slides off Sora’s shoulder and lands gracefully on the desk in the room and roughly taps, grabbing both girls’ attention. He starts to rapidly tap out a sentence and gives a look of strong disapproval as much as a hand could, “Relax Thing. I know but Mother is not home right now and…” she frowns now, “I just want to see Mom.” Then sobering up, she waves the hand off again, “Besides we have done this spell loads of times before. How hard can it be?”

“Vega, hold on; think about this for a moment.” Sora says as she stops her friend of turning around with the book in her hand, lowering it slightly, “I might only go to a normie school and all, but even I know this looks a little more complicated than you might think.” She motions to the open page, “Besides, if you want to see your mom that badly, then FaceTime her. Isn’t she the one who does the ‘modern’ form of communication?”

Vega frowns, “Yes, but she is somewhere on the reservation; she doesn’t always get the best service to start with, and when she is with the wolves, she doesn’t keep her phone on her.” Then she looks away from her friend’s sad gaze, “Also I might have said some things that I am not proud of. I just want to make sure she is ok.”

Sora sighed and stole a glance at Thing who gave as much of a resigned shrug as he could, “Alright, we’re here for support then.”

Vega gives them a smile and a nod, “Thank you. Now then…” She looks back at the book with a concentrated frown, “I think I have everything…” She clears her throat and looks at the circle. She places her hand in the middle and focuses on her mom, ideally though her mind wanders unintentionally as she thinks how her mom was when she was a teenager. What she would not give to see her, possibly get to know her…maybe, no she will not let that thought come to pass.

Sora and Thing watch closely when there is a sudden shake. They are momentarily startled when suddenly the lights in the room went out and a portal opens in the ceiling, “Uh Vega?” Sora calls out.

“Not now, I am focusing.”

“Vega!”

“Not now Sora.”

“VEGA!”

“WHAT?!” Vega turns to look at them with a glare, but then it morphs into the confusion as they point up at the ceiling. She looks up just as a body falls through and lands on top of her, “Ow! Jeeze.” She groans out under the weight of the person that came through.

“Oh man…what happened?” Vega freezes as she hears the person above her.

“Here let me…” Sora came over and once she takes in the new comer, her face momentarily pales, “Uh…”

“Thanks.” Vega carefully gets up once Sora pulls the girl to her feet. Regretfully, as soon as she sees the person, her thoughts start to spiral, Shit…shit…shit…oh this is not good. The girl takes in her surroundings, a hand running through her colorful highlighted blonde hair, “Uh…where am I exactly?” She then locks eyes with Vega, “You look familiar…”

Sora leans over to Vega and whispers, “Is that…?”

“Oh, I hope not…” Vega whispers urgently back before addressing the person she hopes to Selene…Diana…Lucifer; whatever deity is out there, that this is not who she thinks it is, “Uh…well I am Vega and this is my friend Sora…and…uh…you are in my room.”

“Oh well I guess I am sorry to literally drop in like this…it was not my fault though! In fact, I am not even sure what happened…” The girl responds, the last part mostly said to herself, “Anyway, my name is Enid Sinclar. Nice to meet you.” She says brightly with a smile. Seeing the stunned girls’ faces, her smile drops slightly. She focuses more Vega and sees some peculiar resemblances, “Hey are you related to a Wednesday Addams by chance?”

Vega pales and looks to Sora, who had discreetly moved to the desk to hide Thing, who had fainted as soon as he saw Enid. Her friend gave her a look that clearly stated that she was on her own, “Puer vita mea.” She swore out as she pinched the bridge of her nose, which reminded Enid of a very Wednesday like action, “Yeah about that…” Vega said as she debated her options, but decided that she was going to go for the truth, or as much of the truth as possible, “So you asked where you were…and well…yes you are in my room…”

“Yeah, I got that part…I like your décor; very…extraterrestrial and also slightly macabre.”

“Well, you are also…twenty-eight years into the future…” She turned away, not meeting the blonde in the eye. Sora had finished recovering Thing. He tapped away at the desk, which Enid just noticed, seeing her second favorite Addams; her brain malfunctioned as her mouth went dry.

Enid blinked, tearing her gaze away, almost choosing not to believe it, “Come again?”

“Wednesday Addams is my mother.” Vega finished with a wince, ignoring Thing’s warning. Her eyes were still closed, still not looking at the blonde.

“Look out!” Sora called as she rushed forward. Vega’s eyes flew open just as she saw her friend catch the past version of her mom fainting on the spot. Thing ran towards the bathroom and came back with a damp cloth as he placed it on the blonde’s head.

Vega knelt as she grabbed one of the pillows off her bed and gently moved her mom’s head off her friend’s lap, “I am going to grab the smelling salts and some hair dye.”

“For what?” Sora asks eyes wide in astonishment.

“Well, we cannot just keep her unconscious and we are going to need to hide her identity. No one can know she is here.”

“What are you talking about?! We need help to get her home.” Sora stated as she followed Vega out of the room, leaving Enid with Thing.

“We will get her home. I can fix this.” At her friend’s look, Vega said more urgently, “I can. I can fix this and get her home before anything gets messed up.”

“And what? You think your mother is not going to recognize her own spouse? The Wednesday Addams?! The independent detective consultant turned famous mystery author?!”

Vega bit her lip as she entered her parents’ room, “I know who my mother is thank you.”

“Ok just wanted to make sure we are on the same page.” Sora responds as she helps Vega gather some things, “You are going to take the fall for this right when she inevitably finds out?”

“You mean ‘if’.”

“No, I mean ‘when’. Like I said, your mother is Wednesday Addams.”

“Yeah…”

“She might have gone to Nevermore, but her reputation was felt in my pitiful normie school as well.”

“It’s not like you stopped me.” Vega said rolling her eyes as she looked at her mom’s makeup and gathered some rogue, “Therefore that makes you an accomplice.”

Sora rolled her eyes back as she found some hair dye, while Vega gathered some clothes from her mom’s side of the closet, “Was my hesitance in questioning your abilities not hint enough that what you were doing was a bad idea?”

“I plead the fifth.” Vega said after a few moments of thought, “Now that should be good enough…let’s go wake her and then we can figure out a plan from there.”

Once they were back in the room, Vega sent Thing to hide any obvious pictures of the small family with her parents together and to let her know when her mother was coming home. She then knelt and waved the salts under Enid’s nose and the girl quickly sat up with a gasp, “I’m awake!” She exclaimed looking around at her surroundings, “Nope still must be dreaming.”

“No, no you are not dreaming. Now quickly, we must get you changed and disguised before my mother gets home.” Vega explained.

Enid did not hear a word for a moment as she jumped out, startling both Vega and Sora, “Wait! Hold on! If this is not a dream, and I really am in the future! Then…” She ran to the window to see a bright and sunny afternoon sky; she stares out hopefully before immediately being saddened at the sight, “No flying cars?! What the fuck! I thought for sure we would have flying cars right now.”

Vega shared a look with Sora who just gave her a shrug, “Uhm…most people cannot drive normally, you would trust them to fly?” Vega asks in a deadpan.

Deflated for a moment at the lack of flying cars, she brightens as she registers Vega’s voice. Immediately she turns back around and gets into Vega’s now startled face, eyes bright and in wonder, “Wait! You said you are Wednesday’s daughter before?!”

Vega blinks in surprise at the closeness before looking away and biting her lip, “Yes…?” she said apprehensively.

“I cannot believe it! Wednesday had daughter?! Is she married?! To who?!”

“Enid…” Sora gently called out getting the young wolf’s attention, “It is very important we get you into a disguise and we do not have much time.”

“What? Why?”

Sora hesitated for a moment, “No one can know you are from the past. You know, time travel rules and all that…”

Enid deflated and wrung her hands together and allowed Sora to pull her into the bathroom, “Right…but that doesn’t stop Vega from answering my questions!” She said perking right up again.

“Actually, it does. There are certain rules…protocols for this kind of thing.” Vega stated as she brought in the clothes that she had gathered and a fake pair of glasses she had worn one Halloween years ago.

“Yeah ok…” Enid sat as Sora helped do her hair which she had been reassured that this was an easy-to-wash hair dye and would not mess with the colors that were already in her hair. Vega sat in front of her, helping with covering her scars…scars that her Wednesday was so proud of; that she had started to be comfortable with. There was a silence that settled over them before she eventually said, “You are right…I don’t want to upset the space time continuum.”

Vega felt a pool of guilt in her stomach, “I am sorry.”

“At least…” Enid managed out as a knot was formed in her stomach as she recalled the conversation with her own mother was fresh in her mind and the incident with her friends and her own Wednesday was playing slightly in her head, “can you maybe tell me if I am still her best friend? Please tell me I am your favorite aunt…”

Without even thinking, Vega answered, “No, that’s Yoko-” She heard a sniffle which made her pause. Looking at her now, she saw blue eyes begin to water. Oh shit! I made Mom cry! There were a few rules that were expected to be followed…and there was one major rule that was instituted for fear of death: No one…made Enid Sinclair cry. Rumor had it that the last time someone had made her cry, Vega had heard, a body had never been found.

Sora finished with Enid’s hair and quickly mentioned for the wolf to get changed while she pushed Vega out of the bathroom muttering an apology. Once they were out and the door was closed, she rounded on her friend, “What the hell was that?!”

“It was reactionary. I did not mean to make her cry.” Vega pleaded.

“How can someone like you be almost on genius level, but is also incredibly stupid?”

“I know…I know…please do not tell my mother. If she found out-”

The door to the bathroom opened just as Thing rushed into the room taping out that he saw a car pull up the driveway, “Wow…” Sora and Vega commented looking at Enid’s new look.

“How do I look?” She asks apprehensively.

“I think I see myself being a stylist.” Sora comments with approval.

“Not bad.” Vega says but then still notices that Enid’s eyes are a little watery still.

Thing aggressively starts tapping again to get their attention, but they hear a slamming of the door and, “VEGA! I am home!”

“Wednesday?” Enid breathed out as she crept towards the bedroom door.

“Wait.” Vega says stopping her suddenly. She moves around and opens the door herself to call back, “We’ll be there in a second!” Closing the door once more without waiting, she looks back towards Enid, “Ok, your name is Emma. You met us at Nevermore. Uhm…you are a Fur; and…” She looks at Sora for help.

“We ran into you while in town and we invited you to hang out for break.”

Enid looked at the three of them, before she could formulate a response there was a knock on the door before it opened, “Vega? You and Sora should be getting ready; we need to be at the main house in…an hour?” Enid felt her heart jump into her throat as both Vega and Sora stood on either side of her as Wednesday came into the room. Familiar dark piercing eyes met her own, “Another friend from Nevermore?” She questions; her voice had matured with age, and her face had sharpened. As a hopeless romantic, Enid could not help but think that Wednesday aged beautifully; and oh, did she think that whoever had the keys to the reclusive goth’s heart had better be treating her right; the wolf part however wanted to tear that person apart and howl with rage and jealously.

The girl and wolf battled each other in Enid’s mind found herself too stunned to speak as she took in the appearance of her roommate/mate; thankfully Vega jumped in, “Yeah, mother this is Emma. She was in the area so we figured she can stay with us too…if that is alright?”

Wednesday placed her hands on her hips and looked the girl over once more. She frowned deeply as if she was looking for anything out of place; the girl in front of her looked nervous. If this was anyone else, she would take this as a sign of suspicion. However, what had her stumped was that this girl looked a little familiar. She could not stand to see this girl so nervous and uncomfortable around her. It reminded her too much of her amor; and that was something she could not stand. She wanted to question it, but seeing her daughter and friend smiling hopefully at her, she shakes her head and offers a small smile to try and alleviate the girl’s nerves, choosing instead to be merciful…at least for now, “That is fine. We have plenty of room.” She answers with a softness. Yup, it was official now: Enid.Wolf.exe had now stopped working.

“Thank you, mother; uhm…you were saying about the main house?”

Straightening while giving one last easy smile to the newcomer, she responds in her normal dry tone, “Yes, your grandparents are having a little family get-together at the main house. I believe I told you this though when you invited Sora over…”

“Oh, that is right…I remember. Uhm…any chance we can maybe skip?”

“Vega…” This was now delivered with a hint of warning and a more familiar glare that Enid was used to which seemed to reboot her internal system slightly, “I will be finishing up a report. It will take me an hour. You have until then to get yourselves together and ready to go. Did I make myself a little clearer for you?”

“Yes mother.” Vega responded automatically.

“Yes ma’am.” Sora answered in the same tone.

Wednesday smirked now and turned towards the door, “Excellent.” She then paused to look at Enid…or Emma briefly, “Welcome to our home Emma.” The door snapped shut making Vega and Sora let out a sigh in relief.

“That was close.” Vega said placing a hand over her chest.

“Yeah, well what do we do now?” Sora asks looking at the young Addams.

“We do this thing at my grandparents’, maybe try and get a look in the library to see if there is anything on time portals or something; and then we try to get Enid back home afterwards.” Vega turns to look at the young version of her mother, “Enid, are you alright?”

The two girls looked at the time traveler with concern. Her face was flushed in a deep shade of red, “Oh my gosh…ever after all these years she’s still so pretty.”

Sora looks concerned, “We are screwed.”

“No. No we are not screwed.” Vega states quickly as Thing opens a window and guides Enid towards it. He picks up Vega’s notebook and tries to fan the poor teen. They watch the scene, and a sinking feeling pools in her stomach, “Ok maybe partially screwed.”

“She smiled. Wednesday Addams smiled at me…and she seemed genuinely happy.” Enid spoke out unable to fathom her roommate and this woman were the same person, “Whoever your mother married is so lucky.”

Sora looked at her with pity, “Oh this is just sad…let’s just tell her.”

Vega was face palming herself at the teen’s lament immediately snapped back, “What?! No! We stick to the plan." The two look back at the severed hand and the hopeless lovesick teen, "Everything will be fine." Maybe.
