Rhythm of the Rain

Summary:

Danny escaped custody of the Ghost Investigation Ward after three years, his body broken and scarred. He quickly falls into a mundane life where he hopes to not be found, too bad the Bats and Birds have different plans.

Chapter Text

Gotham was dark, and it rained more often than not most days, meaning everything was constantly wet and miserable. After two months of living in Gotham Danny had gotten used to it, the police sirens and rogue attacks making it feel oddly like home. A benefit of living in Gotham was that no one stared at the heavy scarring on his face and arms, all Danny was really worried about was getting through the day at Work and not being found by the Ghost Investigation Ward.

He worked at the Martha Wayne Foundation during the day, trying to help the people that were truly in need. Danny would admit that he missed Phantom but it was too big of a risk when the GIW could ne nearby. The half ghost was fairly proud of himself for not getting mixed up with Gotham vigilantes so far, which was saying a lot with his luck or lack thereof.

That was what brought Danny to his current situation, Robing lying on his living room floor with a growing pool of blood under his body. He ran his hands down his face, resting one hand over his mouth for a minute. Acting fast, Danny ran to his bathroom to grab the first aid kit, he came back into the living room and got on his knees beside the bleeding vigilante.

Danny focused hard and noticed a bullet lodged in the muscle surrounding Robin's right lung, the bullet had just barely missed the lung and Robin was lucky he wasn't dead right now. The half ghost carefully turned his hand intangible and reached to grab the bullet, making sure he didn't do anymore damage as he brought his hand out of the vigilante's body.

He sighed in relief as he dropped the bullet into a trash bin and went about shedding the Kevlar from Robin's body carefully, Danny furrowed his brows and wiped the blood from Robin's body gently. The half ghost threw the rag in his dirty laundry basket and placed a gauze pad over the wound after stitching it up, wrapping Robin's chest with ace bandages. Danny rubbed the back of his neck and put away the first aid kit, walking over to the unconscious vigilante and carefully picking him up, placing him on the couch and pulling a blanket over his body.

The Kevlar was set to the side and Danny made sure Robin was in a comfortable position before tiredly walking over to the small card table that served as his dinner table. He slumped into the singular chair sitting there and tried to stay awake so he was sure Robin wouldn't die.

---

Damian woke up in the morning and found that he was in an unfamiliar place, he slowly sat up and cataloged his surroundings. He was in an apartment, an old one if the the appliances and light fixtures were anything to go off of. The former assassin winced and looked down, noticing that his chest had been bandaged and his Kevlar was sitting to the side of the couch he was on.

He carefully got up from the couch and grabbed his Kevlar, putting it back on and getting ready to leave the apartment. Damian stopped when he spotted a man with messy black hair asleep at the card table just outside the kitchen. The left side of his face was heavily scarred, the scarring reaching over his eye just slightly, a floorboard creaked under his foot and the man stirred. Damian cursed and ran to the window, pushing it open and leaving through it onto the fire escape.

The former assassin paused outside the window, staring at the sleeping male inside the apartment. Despite the heavy scarring on his face the man was...beautiful, he would have to return and make sure this man was okay. His apartment was nearly bare and it had nothing that made it really feel lived in beside the old beat up couch he had woken up on and the card table the man was sleeping at, it was concerning.

Damian's comm crackled to life in his ear and he placed his fingers to it," Oracle, I am returning to the manor. Have Agent A prepare the med bay, I was injured during patrol," the former assassin said before leaping off of the fire escape and returning to the manor.

---

Danny woke up slowly and the first thing he noticed was that Robin was gone, he groaned as he stood up, his back popping in multiple places. He shouldn't have tried to sleep at the card table but he had to make sure that he didn't have a dead vigilante on his couch. The half ghost checked his phone and saw that it was nearly 10:30, meaning that he was nearly two hours late for work. He cursed and ran around his apartment, grabbing what he needed before running out the door, still wearing his clothes from yesterday.

He didn't have a car so he either had to walk to work or take the city bus, this late in the morning the bus probably wouldn't get him to work before noon. So here he was, hair a mess and clothes askew, running down the sidewalk to the Martha Wayne Foundation. Danny really dreaded the fact that he couldn't fly right now, because it would definitely be faster then trying to run, but the GIW had eyes and ears everywhere.

It was one of the rare days in Gotham that it wasn't raining but there were still puddles that caused his shoes and pant legs to become uncomfortably damp. Breathing hard, Danny stopped outside the Martha Wayne Foundation, bracing himself on his knees as he caught his breath. Fixing his hair and clothes the best he could, Danny took another deep breath and walked inside. Sherry, who was sitting at the front desk, rose a brow at him in question.

"Sorry I'm late Sherry, I overslept," Danny apologized, rubbing the back of his neck, a nervous tick that he would likely never shake. Sherry hummed and waved him off, Danny walked over to the puncher and clocked in before going to work.

---

The Martha Wayne Foundation was something that Jason was really proud of, it was a place where he could provide help for the less fortunate souls of Gotham. His workers did their best to make sure anyone who came in was welcomed and felt safe. Most of the people who worked here were from the alley, trying to give to the others who couldn't help themselves.

Jason usually didn't come in but on the days that he did he tried to keep an eye on one particular worker, Daniel "Danny" Nightingale. Danny was just barely eighteen and he was working harder than anyone else here, than there was the scarring on the left side of his face. It was the kind of scarring you got from a traumatic injury, this scarring in particular appeared like electrical burns.

There were some days that Danny looked dead on his feet, today especially, he came in two hours late and looked like he had run here. Jason decided to approach him about it later and just let Danny do his work. If that weren't enough, Damian got shot on patrol last night and walked back into the manor already bandaged with the bullet removed and the entry wound sewed up.

He claimed that it didn't matter who saved him but the kid seemed oddly defensive whenever asked for details about what happened. It was weird, and suspicious, Damian never withheld information from Bruce unless he deemed it absolutely necessary, or he was just pissed at the big bad Bat.

---

"Danny, can I talk to you a minute?" Jason asked as he approached the eighteen year old, Danny jumped and put down the blankets he was holding. Nervously shifting on his feet and nodded, Jason smiled and gestured for the younger male to follow him. The two of them walked to Jason's office, Danny fiddling with his hands behind him and dreading what this conversation would be about.

"Am I in trouble? I'm really sorry I was two hours late, I just overslept because something happened last night and I fell asleep at my kitchen table and-" Danny rambled until he was cut off by Jason. The former crime lord levelling him with a look that made Danny snap his mouth shut.

"You aren't in trouble Danny, I just want to make sure you're alright," Jason said and Danny blinked, like he hadn't been expecting that answer. Jason mentally cursed, how neglected had this kid been to be surprised that someone was worried for him? It pissed Jason off to no end. Danny took a step back, rubbing his arm and looking away from Jason.

"I'm alright, I'm just a little tired," Danny smiled weakly and walked away from him, going to distribute blankets on the provided beds.

---

Damian spaced out as he sat in class, thinking about the man that had removed the bullet from his body and bandaged him up. Alfred said that the stitches had been done professionally, there were no other injuries besides the entry wound of the bullet. It intrigued Damian that a civilian would be able to stitch up wounds with this kind of precision that he hardly felt any pain.

"Mr. Wayne, is my class boring you?" Ms. Summers asked, Damian blinked and grumbled, opening his book to the required page. He planned on returning to the apartment to see the man again and make sure that he was doing well. The old teacher huffed and went back to her lesson, Damian tuning her out as he already knew most of this information.

Chapter Text

Damian furrowed his brows as he stood on a rooftop, it was raining again, and that meant crime would hopefully be a little less tonight. His hood was pulled over his head, shielding his face and hair from the rain. Father had recently allowed him to start running patrols by himself, the other night's incident putting him on thin ice since the Dark Knight was worried for his safety.

The vigilante jumped down when he heard struggling and saw Danny being held at gun point, the mugger demanded all the money Danny had. Damian saw red as Danny sighed and reached into his wallet, grabbing out a few twenties and handing them over. As he did the mugger threw the money down and accused Danny of not giving him more money.

"Come on man, I work a minimum wage job and live in a crappy apartment. Do you really think I'm going to hand over hundreds of dollars?" Danny said, his voice was strained, like he was ready to fall over from how tired he was. Damian ran forward and pushed the mugger to the ground, grabbing his gun and throwing it deeper into the alley, if Damian was a little rougher than necessary father didn't need to know about it.

Damian picked up Danny's money from the ground and handed it back to him, the other male took it, his hand shaking slightly as he did so. The former assassin's eyebrows furrowed, either Danny had been scared or he had some kind of tremors in his hands.

"Thank you, I'm...going to go now," Danny said before shouldering his bag and slinking away, his rain soaked shirt clinging to his skin and showing off his thin frame. Damian scowled and pulled himself back up onto the rooftops, following Danny to make sure he got home safely.

---

Danny dropped the keys to his apartment in the dish sitting on the table beside his front door and sluggishly toed off his shoes. With slumped shoulders the half ghost walked into his kitchen and reached into the fridge, pulling out a ready to eat pasta bake. He turned it over a few times before removing the packaging and placing it in the microwave, sitting at his card table and rubbing his temples.

The half ghost winced as his old wounds ached dully, the Ghost Investigation Ward had used ectoranium infused tools so even if the wounds were healed the pain would always linger. He missed Jazz and his best friends, they didn't know what happened to him, how could they when the GIW came in the night and took him from his bed? Let inside by the very people he trusted to keep him safe.

He was brought out of his thoughts by the beeping of the microwave, Danny slowly pushed himself up and grabbed the food, going back to his table after grabbing a fork and digging in.

---

Damian followed Danny back to his apartment and didn't like what he saw, the man was warming up one of those ready to eat meals. While they were a good solution for someone who didn't have the time to prepare a meal for themselves they were high in calories and sodium. He would have to enlist Jason's help to make sure that Danny was eating the right things and gaining a little weight, the man was way too thin to be considered healthy.

The former assassin frowned when Danny rubbed the left side of his face, just beside his eye, the man winced in pain before he got up and threw away the empty container. He walked out of the living room and Damian sighed, he might have to try and run into him as Damian Wayne rather than Robin. Damian stayed in front of the window before the lights went out, at that point the former assassin assumed Danny had gone to bed.

He turned away and grappled towards Wayne manor, nothing was happening tonight so he would end his patrol early.

---

"Todd, I require your help," Damian said as he walked into the Martha Wayne Foundation, it was one of the rare days that his older brother made an appearance. The elder rose a brow and crossed his arms, Damian clicked his teeth and looked away from Jason. Damian crossed his own arms," one of your workers is not taking proper care of himself," the former assassin bit out.

That seemed to catch Jason's attention," oh? Care to tell me how you would know that Damian?" Jason asked and the former assassin bit the inside of his cheek. If he told Jason the truth he would be blackmailed for the rest of his life. He was an Al Ghul and a Wayne, he held himself with pride, he wasn't going to let Jason tease him because of a silly crush he had on the beautiful man who treated his wound.

"Oh I know what it is, you've been stalking them, is that it?" Jason asked and Damian bristled, immediately going to defend himself.

"It is not stalking! It is observation! And Daniel Nightingale is clearly in pain and incapable of caring for himself properly!" Damian yelled, stopping short when he realized what he had just admitted. Jason blinked at him before his expression hardened," Todd, it isn't what you think-I simply wanted to make sure he was doing okay because I noticed the state of his apartment and his physical condition," Damian rambled.

Jason stopped him," Damian, what do you want me to do exactly? Danny doesn't really let anyone get close to him. I know he's running from something or someone but if I press for answers he'll shut down and run away," the former assassin said. Damian frowned," I can't help someone who doesn't want it Damian. Now get out of here before B comes sniffing around," Jason shooed him off.

Damian huffed and walked out of his older brothers office, stopping when he saw Danny balancing dangerously on a ladder as he tried to replace one of the fluorescent tubes that had burnt out. The former assassin ran forward, ready to catch Danny if he fell off of the ladder, just as he got to the bottom of the ladder it toppled over and Danny came crashing down.

Danny landed in Damian's arms in a bridal carry, it was worrying how easy it was to catch Danny, there should have been at least a little bit of strain on Damian's part. The former assassin carefully put Danny down and the other male blinked at him.

"Thanks for the save," Danny smiled slightly, when Damian didn't respond immediately the other male shifted on his feet uncomfortably. Danny turned and grabbed the ladder, carefully folding it back up and putting it away.

---

Jason walked up to Danny near the end of the eighteen year old's shift holding a bag of chicken marsala, it was leftover from what he had made the other night. He cleared his throat and Danny nearly jumped out of his skin, clutching the mop close to his chest.

"A-Am I in trouble?" Danny asked and Jason's heart just about broke, how neglected or mistreated did this kid have to have been to think he was in trouble. Jason shook his head and held out the container of food, Danny blinked at him in confusion. The eighteen year old placed the mop to the side and hesitantly took the container from Jason, cracking the lid and smelling it.

"It's chicken marsala. You need some meat on your bones kid, you're too thin to be considered healthy," Jason said and Danny pursed his lips. The eighteen year old looked like he wanted to protest," take it. You work here to help people but you need help too, you understand me?" Jason asked. Danny nodded slightly and thanked Jason, walking away in silence.

---

Danny heated up the chicken marsala that night, his stomach growling, having a home cooked meal reminded him how long it had been since he ate a proper meal. The half ghost took the food from the microwave, muscles in his hands twitching slightly. He went to his table and sat down, eating in silence. Sometimes the silence got to be too much, he wished he had people that he could spend time with but he didn't want to risk people getting hurt because they knew him.

After finishing the food, Danny cleaned the container and set it on his counter so he could return it to Jason when he saw him next. Today was a pretty bad pain day, which meant he limped to his room and got ready for bed. The GIW had taken so much from him, removed his legs and arms so many times that there was permanent nerve damage that made it hard to move.

He sighed and sat down on the edge of his bed, the mattress was lumpy so it really didn't help with his aching body. Danny rubbed his eye and looked over at his nightstand where a picture of him with his fraid sat. Sam looked unamused while Tucker was throwing up a peace sign, Jazz had her hand on his shoulder with a small smile. When he looked at himself in the picture, he didn't recognize who he saw, it felt like he was a completely different person now than the naive fourteen year old who thought he could save the world.

Danny laid down and turned off his lamp, bathing the room in darkness, thankfully he had tomorrow off so he would probably grab takeout and stay at home.

Chapter Text

Jason kept an eye on Danny for the next couple of weeks, making sure that he was okay and still eating proper meals. Damian had come by the foundation today to help set up for their community meal. Two days a week the Martha Wayne Foundation would provide a completely free dinner for the people in Crime Alley, it was something that Jason didn't have the luxury of when he was a kid.

Damian finished setting up the tables and dusted off his hands, turning his attention over to Danny who was moving very gingerly. The former assassin walked over and tapped him on the shoulder, causing Danny to jump.

"Hello, do you require assistance?" Damian asked and Danny held a hand over his heart, like it was beating fast from being startled. Danny eyed him suspiciously, turning away and continuing to set paper plates and bowls along with sets of plastic utensils on the serving table.

"Would you mind helping me get things set up for the soup? Sherry is going to make it when she comes in later," Danny asked and Damian nodded. The former assassin followed after Danny into the kitchen and helped Danny grab ingredients for the soup.

---

"Alright demon brat you can go home now," Jason said and Damian turned to look at his older brother. Danny was off to the side, kneeling in front of a young girl who was hiding behind her mothers legs. He reached into the pocket of his coat and pulled out a small piece of candy, eyeing the mother to make sure she was okay with it, the mother smiled and placed a hand on her daughter's head.

The girl smiled and took the piece of candy, moving around to hug Danny, her arms wrapped around his neck. Damian felt his cheeks warm, there was something otherworldly about Danny and his beauty, the former assassin wanted to get closer but didn't know how. Danny noticed him staring and waved shyly, turning away and walking over to Sherry to help serve soup.

Damian sighed through his nose and went to Jason's office so he could grab his bag, maybe he would have to start volunteering here more often, this was the most time he had been able to spend around Danny. The former assassin bid goodbye to his brother and walked out of the building, waiting outside for Alfred to pick him up.

---

Damian walked into the coffee shop behind Tim, regrettably they had to work together on a case and Tim insisted that they get coffee before they do anything else. The former assassin ordered a large coffee, black, because he didn't like milk or sugar in his drinks. He was waiting for Tim's order when he saw Danny sitting alone in the corner of the coffee shop, hunched over a cup of coffee, his hands pressed against the mug tightly.

The former assassin turned away when Danny caught him staring and stepped a little closer to Tim, taking a drink of his coffee. Tim's name was called and the older male went to get his drink before they walked out of the coffee shop.

"What's up with you demon brat? You've been making more trips to the Martha Wayne Foundation lately," Tim said, his eyes narrowed with suspicion. Damian tightened his grip on the cup in his hand, he couldn't let his family know about his infatuation with Danny, especially Tim.

"It is nothing to be concerned about, I simply wanted to help the people who are in need," Damian explained himself, sliding into the passenger seat of Tim's car. The older male hummed and started the engine, driving to the stakeout point.

---

The former assassin couldn't bring himself to focus on the mission, he was trying to think of ways that he could normally approach Danny. He had been going to the foundation regularly and most of the workers knew him at this point. However, Danny had yet to interact with him on any of his visits, Danny typically kept to himself and either cleaned or grabbed toys for the children that came in.

Damian found Danny more admirable every day, from his kind personality to the way he was fiercely protective of the children who regularly came in. Most may say that his appearance was unsightly but he found those scars oddly beautiful. The former assassin finished sweeping and leaned the broom against the wall, looking around the building for Danny.

He spotted the other male outside and made his way over, stepping outside silently and shutting the door behind him. Danny glanced over at him momentarily before staring back out at the falling rain. Damian stood there awkwardly for a moment before moving to sit beside Danny.

"It never rained this much where I grew up, we always had sun," Danny said softly, Damian could relate to that, it hardly ever rained in Nanda Parbat, the dry air was sometimes suffocating. Grandfather said that the suffering built character, difficulty breathing from the air garnered strength. Danny rubbed the back of his neck, his hand twitching as he brought it back down.

"I can relate. I've only been living with my father for a little over six years, before that I was raised in a very dry environment, the sun beat down on us and made everything...harder," Damian explained. He purposely left out the details of the hours he spent in the sun to build up his tolerance for heat during missions, Danny hummed and looked over at him.

"I'm Damian Wayne. To- Jason's younger brother," Damian introduced himself, refraining from using Jason's last name to introduce himself. Danny reached over, offering his hand for Damian to shake.

"Daniel Nightingale, everyone calls me Danny," the other male smiled and Damian mentally counted it as a win, here he was, finally talking to the man who had saved his life the other night. Danny pulled his hand back, flexing it a little to soothe to aching muscles," I've seen you around the foundation. It's nice that you're volunteering," Danny smiled and Damian found his cheeks warming up.

"Yes well...I wanted to give to the community, father does charity work and I thought it best I do some too," Damian explained and Danny hummed, rubbing his arm slightly.

---

Damian walked into the Martha Wayne Foundation with Titus close behind him, the former assassin had volunteered to bring the great dane for the children. Danny walked up, waring a dark blue sweater despite the uncomfortable humidity in the building. The older male walked over, nearly glowing when he saw the great dane, scratching his chin and behind his ears.

"You must be Titus. You're such a handsome boy," Danny grinned, exposing his sharper than normal canines and teeth. Damian couldn't bring himself to care, his best friend was half-Kryptonian, why would Danny being slightly less than human bother him? It would go against everything that his father had taught him. Titus wagged his tail and pressed his face against Danny's shoulder, begging for more attention.

The children ran over to Titus and started squealing, reaching for the large canine only for Danny to stop them.

"Kids, calm down, you have to gently pet Titus so you don't scare or hurt him," Danny said, carefully guiding one of the children's hands to Titus' head. Damian smiled and allowed Danny to handle the children petting Titus. The canine seemed to enjoy the attention, his tail wagging faster as the children pet him and scratched his chin, Danny stood off to the side and made sure the children didn't get out of hand with Titus.

---

"Thanks for bringing Titus by today demon brat. The kids really enjoyed it," Jason said, hands in the pockets of his leather jacket. Damian huffed and tightened his grip on Titus' leash, he looked around Jason and saw Danny walking over. Damian straightened his back and Jason rose a brow before turning to look at Danny, who was moving rather slow.

"It was good seeing you Damian, and you too Titus," Danny smiled, leaning over to scratch behind the canine's ears. Danny stood up straight and adjusted his bag on his shoulder, bidding goodbye to Jason and Damian. The former assassin turned and stepped in front of Danny.

"Allow me to walk you home," Damian offered and Danny furrowed his brows before agreeing, the former assassin smiled and fell into step beside the slightly older male. Jason watched his younger brother leave with Danny. Then it hit him, this wasn't just Damian offering to walk Danny home to be nice, this was a crush, and a big one at that.

Chapter Text

Danny yawned as he got out of bed in the morning, his back popping as he stretched and scratched his stomach, mindful of the scar on his abdomen. He walked into his bathroom after grabbing a change of clothes and climbed into the shower. Anymore the days seemed to blur together, waking up at eight in the morning, getting dressed, having breakfast, and then going to work from nine in the morning until seven in the evening.

Jazz would be disappointed with how he was living his life now, wasting away with no one to really talk to in his spare time and eating junk. He dried his hair with a towel and walked into his kitchen, pulling open the fridge to grab the milk. The half ghost opened it and smelled the milk, it was a few days past the expiration date but it didn't smell off but he figured it was okay to drink, he had eaten worse things.

Danny made a bowl of oatmeal and sat down at his table, eating in relative silence with the only sound being from the ticking clock on the far wall. He would probably have to go grocery shopping today, his fridge was pretty empty.

---

The half ghost walked through the aisles of the supermarket, grabbing mostly store brands since he couldn't afford the name brands. He grabbed bag of bread and placed it in the top of his cart so it wouldn't get smashed. As he was walking through the store he noticed an older man look at the top shelf with a perplexed expression, Danny glanced up and saw a jar of Lingonberry jam.

Danny walked over and grabbed the jar for him," thank you young man," the older male smiled and Danny nodded, going back over to his cart to continue his shopping. It was when he went grocery shopping that he really wished he had a car. It was going to be a pain carrying multiple bags of groceries home, especially in the alley, he was likely to have all of his groceries stolen by someone who couldn't afford to purchase their own.

He sighed as he finished scanning the last bit of his groceries, bagging them up and grabbing his receipt before walking out of the store.

---

"Hand over everything you got old man. I know you work for the Wayne's," a mugger snarled, his yellow teeth exposed as he brandished a knife. Alfred calmly set grocery bags in the trunk of the car and reached into his coat to grab a few bills. However, as Alfred was about to hand over to bills, a can of tomato sauce was thrown at the mugger, he cursed loudly and rubbed his head.

The mugger and Alfred looked over, growling in anger at the young man who had intervened. Another can was chucked at the mugger and hit him in the nose, if the situation were different Alfred wouldn't no whether to compliment the aim or chastise the waste of canned goods.

"This is a new low even for Gotham, why don't you pick on someone your own size?" the young man said, his icy blue eyes practically glowing. The mugger stared for a few minutes before shoving his knife back in his jacket and stalking off. Alfred watched as the black haired male sighed and leaned down to pick up the cans he had thrown, sizeable dents in both of them.

"Thank you young man. Those cans are quite damaged, allow me to replace them," Alfred offered and the black haired male blinked at him before standing up straight. He shoved the cans back in his bag.

"There's really no need, the food inside should still be okay despite the dent," the young man said, rubbing his neck nervously before going to pick up his other bags. Alfred frowned, that simply wouldn't do.

"I think not, the seal on the can could potentially be compromised, that makes the food unsafe for consumption," Alfred said and the black haired male furrowed his brows, the old butler offered his hand. Alfred smiled kindly," please, consider it a thanks," he said and the young man nodded hesitantly. The old butler smiled and gestured for the black haired male to follow him.

---

So this was how Danny died, by being an idiot and climbing into a car that probably cost more than he made in five years with an old man he had just prevented from being mugged. The pit in his stomach deepened when he noticed they were heading into a nicer neighborhood, he messed with the sleeves of his sweater and bit the inside of his cheek. It was so tempting to just phase out of the car and escape but what if this guy reported him to Batman? Everyone knew that Batman didn't like metahumans in his city.

The car pulled up to a large gothic manor and Danny gulped, he jolted when the passenger door opened and he looked over to see the old man smiling at him. He was offering his hand again and Danny felt like it would be rude to not take the offered hand.

"Ah, where are my manners. I am Alfred Pennyworth, butler of the Wayne family," the old man, Alfred smiled and Danny felt his eyes widen a fraction. He cleared his throat and grabbed some of the grocery bags from the trunk of the car.

"Daniel Nightingale, but everyone calls me Danny," the black haired male said and Alfred nodded, he stepped to the side and allowed Danny to walk in front of him. The two headed around the back of the manor and Alfred opened the door that led into what Danny assumed was the kitchen. Alfred went about putting the groceries away and Danny stood around awkwardly.

"Here we are, a can of tomato sauce and coconut milk," Alfred smiled, setting the cans on the island for Danny to grab. The half ghost grabbed them and thanked Alfred silently, he was ready to leave when Alfred stopped him," now Danny, you seem famished, allow me to make you something to eat," the butler said, already tying an apron around his waist and rolling up his sleeves after removing his coat,

"That really isn't necessary Mr. Pennyworth, I need to get home and take care of my groceries, plus I have work tomorrow so I need to get to bed a decent time and-" Danny rambled until he was cut off by Alfred.

"Hush, you're far too thin to be considered healthy. This is my thank you for helping get rid of that rude fellow earlier," Alfred said, placing some chicken in a pan and seasoning it with a mix he had set to the side. The old butler sighed, Danny was so much like his son and grandchildren, denying their bodies basic necessities like sleep and food in lieu of working.

---

Danny finally walked into his apartment around eight in the evening, Alfred had insisted he stayed for some tea after eating and they exchanged numbers. The butler had offered to teach him how to cook and provide meals for him in the process. He didn't know how to refuse the offer, Alfred was just trying to help him and Danny could feel nothing but good intentions coming from the old man.

He finally put away his groceries and yawned, turning off the lights in his apartment and going to his room, he had wanted so much more for his life. All of his dreams died when the GIW took him, when his parents showed that they would never accept him for the way he was by letting the GIW into Fenton Works. Sometimes he still remembered the searing pain of the ectoranium laced shackles.

The feeling of his skin being cut into and his chest cavity exposed, organs removed and stored in jars, limbs cut off to see if they would regenerate, they always did. His limbs had been cut off so many times there was permanent nerve damage, sometimes his hands would tremble or twitch uncontrollably, making it all the much harder to complete daily tasks.

The GIW were something Danny hated, what scared him was that the hate he had towards the agency extended slightly to humans. Danny didn't want to think about that fact that he could start hating humans, soon finding himself wanting to kill them or wage war on the human realms. He may be king of the Infinite Realms but he was trying to be better than Pariah was, if he waged war it made him no better than the tyrant he had dethroned.

He tried not to think about it as he slowly drifted off to sleep.

Chapter Text

Damian hated a lot of things, school, socializing, people in general, but Danny Nightingale was not one of the things that he hated. The eighteen year old was...in a word, admirable, to treat his bullet wound when he could have done nothing. Then he worked at the Martha Wayne Foundation, giving back to the community when he himself didn't have very much.

The former assassin had done his research, Danny came from a neglectful home, his parents reported him dead around his fifteenth birthday. There was something there, but Damian didn't know what, it was a trait he unfortunately shared with his father. Damian had a bone deep need to know everything about Danny but at the same time he didn't want to ruin his chances of a relationship with him.

Danny was a very private person, his lack of social media and any notable friends practically made him a ghost. Damian shook his head and finished brushing Batcow, he rubbed her head and put her back in her stall. The former assassin walked into the kitchen and paused when he saw Danny in the kitchen, he looked...almost comfortable as he stood beside Alfred wearing an apron.

"Now Danny, carefully stir the sauce, it will help our seasonings incorporate better," Alfred said, carefully taking Danny's hand and directing him. Damian found the scene endearing, he silently moved across the kitchen, hoping not to disturb Danny and Alfred. The butler noticed him anyway," master Damian, I taught you better. Come say hello to our guest," Alfred said.

Danny froze, turning to look at the former assassin, he smiled slightly and waved," hi Damian," he said quietly and Damian returned the greeting.

---

The half ghost smiled as he finished jarring up his sauce, Alfred had taken the time and effort to show him how to cook, appalled that he relied on frozen and ready to eat meals. Alfred came over with a bag and the half ghost thanked him silently, the old man smiled and rested a hand on Danny's shoulder, Jazz would be proud that he wasn't making unhealthy choices anymore.

"I enjoyed this Alfred, thank you for having patience with me," Danny smiled, Alfred hummed, removing his apron and hanging it near the doorway. He grabbed a small bag of chocolate chip cookies, still slightly warm.

"Of course dear boy, come over any time you like," Alfred said and sent Danny on his way, the half ghost placed the cookies with his sauce and waved goodbye. It would be interesting getting back home considering he didn't have a car, maybe walking wouldn't be so bad. Just as he stepped foot outside he was startled by Damian, letting out an undignified shriek.

"Danny, allow me to escort you home," Damian said and Danny furrowed his brows at the seventeen year old, shouldering his bag a little more. Damian didn't look old enough to drive, then again Danny was really bad at telling other people's age.

"You...You can drive?" Danny asked and Damian nodded, straightening his back a little bit, explaining that he had gotten his license a couple months ago. Danny rubbed the back of his neck, getting a ride would be really nice...it would help him get home a lot faster then walking. Danny caved after a few seconds," I would really appreciate a ride home, walking would taken at least a couple of hours," he explained.

Damian bristled," follow me then, I won't allow you to walk that far," he said, grabbing Danny's hand and pulling him along.

---

It had been a long time since Danny rode on a motorcycle or motorbike, and riding with Damian was a lot different than riding with Johnny. Damian was more careful with how he rode, as opposed to Johnny who weaved between cars or plain rode right through them using intangibility. He hardly ever rode with the biker ghost, Danny didn't want to risk being killed all the way in some kind of motorcycle accident.

Damian stopped outside of Danny's apartment building and waited for the half ghost to get off the back of the bike, before he could grab his bag Damian picked it up. He pocketed the keys to his motorbike, removing his helmet and raising a brow at Danny. The half ghost smiled slightly and the two of them walked into the apartment building, heading up the stairs to Danny's unit.

"I look forward to seeing you at the foundation. Get rest, you look exhausted," Damian said, handing Danny's bag to him once the half ghost got his apartment door opened. Danny blushed slightly, not used to having people worry about him anymore. He smiled at Damian and waved before shutting the apartment door and leaning against it, closing his eyes and taking a few breaths.

He walked across the apartment and place the jars of sauce in his fridge, putting the cookies on his counter, maybe...life could get better.

---

Danny walked into the Martha Wayne Foundation the next day with a smile, Damian crossed the space and greeted him pleasantly. The former assassin asked him how he had slept the night prior, Danny responding with a bland answer. Damian shifted on his feet a little bit causing Danny to tilt his head slightly in question.

"Danny, I was wondering if you would like to spend the day together tomorrow. We could do whatever you like," Damian said, sniffing and holding his head up high as he awaited an answer. Danny laughed a little, rubbing his arm.

"I'd love to hang out with you Damian. Maybe we can go to the aquarium and then get some lunch?" Danny suggested and Damian lit up at the mention of the aquarium. He cleared his throat and nodded before looking back at Danny.

"That sounds agreeable, I look forward to it," Damian said before turning and walking over to take care of some equipment that had been left out.

---

Damian checked his phone as he waited outside of Danny's apartment, he was ten minutes early, the former assassin pushed himself away from his bike and decided to walk inside the apartment building. He knocked on Danny's door and smiled when the black haired male answered, wearing a worn NASA hoodie and black jeans, beat up red converse on his feet.

"You're early," Danny said with a laugh and Damian hummed, the black haired male stepped into the hallway, turning to lock his door. The former assassin offered his hand and Danny took it, the two walking outside together. Damian made himself comfortable on his bike and Danny crawled on behind him, wrapping his arms around Damian's waist to secure himself.

Damian tried not to blush and fired up his motorbike, speeding towards the Gotham aquarium.

---

The aquarium was dimly light, as all aquariums tended to be, Damian and Danny were walking through the deep sea area. Danny had always been fascinated by the deep sea much like space, the most interesting creatures lived where humans couldn't see. Sometimes Danny wished he could disappear where humans couldn't find him, maybe one day he wouldn't have to hide who he was.

"Do you like the ocean Danny?" Damian asked from beside him, the half ghost hummed, watching the giant spider crabs move around their tank. He pressed his hand to the cool glass before looking over at Damian.

"Yeah, some of the most interesting creatures live down there. It's a lot like space in a way, there's so much that we could still learn, so many different things could be out there that we have yet to discover," Danny spoke wistfully. Damian frowned a little, Danny spoke like he loved the stars and wanted nothing more but to be among them, yet he looked like he had given up.

"Danny, do you want to see space?" Damian asked, he could pull a few strings to make it happen, father was not short on money after all. The half ghost whipped his head over to look at him, eyes wide.

"I would love to, but it's just not in the cards for me. I have a weak heart so I probably wouldn't pass any of the assessments necessary," Danny sighed, putting his hands in his hoodie pockets. Damian scowled," when I was younger I wanted to be an astronaut...but there was...an accident," that was all Danny said before moving out of the deep sea area and towards the smaller things.

---

Damian and Danny were entering the gift shop when it happened, the half ghost was grabbed from behind while Damian was wrestled to the floor by two masked men. They were in a more empty part of the gift shop so no one really noticed what was happening. Danny panicked as he was blindfolded and corralled somewhere, trying to free himself from the iron grip on his arms.

"Drive, we'll make the call when we get there," a rough voice said and Danny bit his lips, trying to ground himself somehow. He reached out with his core for the first time in months, feeling Damian's soul right next to him. Danny let out a shaky breath, at least Damian was here, it scared the half ghost how attached he had become to the other male within a month.

He just had to remain calm and hope that someone would come for them sooner rather than later.

Chapter 6

Summary:

So sorry about the lack of updates! Work has been crazy and I’m on vacation right now

Chapter Text

Damian glared at the men who had abducted him and Danny, they weren't rogue affiliated if the ski masks were anything to go off of. He looked around and noticed that they were in one of the many warehouses of Gotham harbor. His heart nearly stopped when he spotted Danny tied to a chair nearby, his breaths were uneven, his entire body locked up as he shifted around in the chair he was tied to.

The men were holding guns so Damian probably wouldn't be able to speak to Danny and calm him down, he didn't want Danny to feel like he was alone. Damian waited for what felt like hours before the men left the room to make the ransom call.

"Danny, I am right here. It's going to be okay," Damian promised, trying to reach for his panic button. Danny lifted his head a little and moved around in the chair.

Damian sighed and looked around the room, feeling his fingers brush against his panic button. One of the men came back into the room and noticed him.

”I don’t think so. Wouldn’t want to miss our payday,” the man laughed, ripping the panic button from Damian’s hand and crushing it in his hand. The former assassin mentally cursed, glaring at the man who grinned at him.

“My father will assure that you can’t get away with this,” Damian threatened. The man got in his face and pressed the barrel of his gun to Damian’s forehead. Out of the corner of his eye he noticed Danny trembling, but it wasn’t out of fear. Damian was able to recognize barely contained rage.

Get away from him,” Danny spoke, sounding like multiple voices were overlapping his own. The man looked over, raising a brow and pressing the gun more to Damian’s temple.

Fangs and claws made themselves known on Danny, his eyes flashing a dangerous green that Damian knew all too well. The man took a step back as Danny snarled, hunching over in the chair and pushing against the ropes.

The ropes groaned in protest before pulling apart, Danny didn’t say a word as he approached the man. Thrusting out his hand and grabbing the gun, ripping it from the man’s hand and throwing it across the room.

Danny looked over as the other men came into the room and a pulse of ice escaped him, killing the men. The half ghost ripped the ropes, picking up Damian and carrying him outside.

Once the humid air met Danny’s skin he seemed to snap out of it, putting Damian down and stumbling back. He stared at his hands before looking at Damian and running away.

-

Danny’s heart pounded in his chest, how could he be so stupid? He hadn’t lost control like that in so long. Now he could have pinged the GIW radars and they were on they were to Gotham already. Danny had to disappear, he could go somewhere without people so this didn’t happen again.

With shaking hands he ran them through his hair, sliding down to the floor with his back against the wall. He didn’t want to know what Damian probably thought of him now. Danny was an idiot, he always had been, anyone from Amity would agree that he was the fuck up in a family full of geniuses.

He sniffed and tried to push away the tears that were threatening to escape him, crying would do nothing. What was worse was the fact that he had grown attached to people here, he promised himself that he wouldn’t.

Danny fought for as long as he could before his tears won and spilled from his eyes. As he sat on the floor crying his arm and chest ached, dulling the pain of losing his friend if only by a little bit.

-

Damian sat in the cave as Alfred looked him over for any injuries, the only noticeable injuries being bruises on his wrists from the ropes.

He had messaged Danny but the eighteen year old didn’t respond, only being marked as read. It worried Damian, had Danny faced rejection for his metahuman status? Is that why he looked so terrified? Damian clenched his jaw in anger.

No one threatened the people that he cared about. Once Alfred gave him the all clear he walked towards his bike, ignoring the look his father sent him. Damian was determined to see Danny and tell him that he didn’t care if he was a metahuman.

-

Damian stood outside of Danny’s apartment, hesitating to knock on the door in case the older male didn’t want to see him. He took a breath and knocked on the door, waiting in silence for Danny to answer.

”Danny? May I come in?” Damian called out after a minute, there was shuffling from inside.

”Go away,” Danny responded, his voice coming out in a rough croak. Damian furrowed his brows, he wasn’t going to leave just like that.

”I want to talk with you. Please Danny,” Damian said, pressing his forehead against the door. He needed to see Danny, he needed to make sure the other male was okay.

There was the clicking of a lock before the door cracked open, showing Danny’s tear streaked face. Danny looked awful, like he had been crying uncontrollably, the eighteen year old stepped to the side and let Damian in.

Damian looked around, it was the first time he had been in the apartment since he was injured almost three months ago.

”I’m sorry you got abducted Danny. It’s because you were with me,” Damian said and the other male said nothing. He held his arm and shifted in place on the couch, Damian tried to think of what to say next. The former assassin took a step closer,” for what it’s worth, I don’t care that you’re a metahuman,” he said.

The look Danny gave him is what really threw Damian off, his face was twisted in pain as he looked like he wanted to say something.

”I…Damian, what would you say if I weren’t a metahuman?” Danny asked and Damian knew this was a test of some kind. The way the rest of this interaction went hinged on Damian’s answer.

”Then I still wouldn’t care. You are my friend, regardless of whether you are human or not,” Damian assured him, reached out hesitantly to grab Danny’s hands. The older male allowed it, Damian rubbed his thumbs over the tops of Danny’s hands.

His skin was cold and his hands felt right in his own, Damian looked at them, observing the Lichtenberg figures on Danny’s left hand.

”You really mean that?” Danny asked and Damian nodded seriously.

”Yes. One of my best friends is half Kryptonian,” Damian said and Danny let out a shaky breath. The former assassin could feel Danny trembling, from fear or nerves he didn’t know but he wanted to provide some comfort.

”What if I told you that…that my existence is considered illegal? That there are people legally allowed to hunt me down and tear me apart?” Danny asked, his voice shaking.

”I would hunt them down and make sure they suffer a fate worse than death,” Damian promised. Danny and pulled his hands from Damian’s and grabbed him in a hug, burying his face in the former assassin’s shoulder.

-

Danny didn’t know what to feel, Damian had said he didn’t care if he wasn’t human, he said he would hunt down the GIW. Damian knew he wasn’t human but still allowed him to be close.

The half ghost pulled away and wiped his eyes with the back of his hand, Damian continued to look at him in concern. Danny knew that the GIW were probably coming, and there was nothing he could do to stop it.

If he at least warned Damian they were coming maybe he would be safe, he could feel that Damian was a liminal. The rest of his family had also been touched by death, putting them in the GIW’s list.

”My episode at the warehouse probably set off a beacon for the people who are after me,” Danny said and Damian frowned. The half ghost messed with the sleeve of his sweater. He let out a shaky breath,” they’ll try to capture me, if you don’t see or hear from me then assume I'm dead,” Danny said.

Damian’s frown turned into a scowl,” I am not abandoning you. No one is going to capture you,” he promised. Danny shook his head.

”You don’t understand. These people are persistent, they’ll stop at nothing to capture me even if it means killing innocents,” Danny explained. Damian clenched his fists and Danny sighed,” you’re right Damian, I’m not human, not completely. That’s why they want me,” he said.

” Have you not asked for help? You could have contacted the Justice League,” Damian said and Danny clenched his jaw.

”I have tried to contact the Justice League. They ignored my calls, I gave up on them after the fifth time,” Danny snarled. His fangs and sharp teeth were on full display, catching Damian off guard.

” Danny, if you don’t mind me asking…what are you?” Damian questioned and Danny tensed. His hand flew to his left arm, gripping it tightly as his death scar ached.

” I’m a half ghost. An extremely rare species that treads the line between life and death,” Danny explained shortly. Damian could feel that it was a sensitive subject.

”Do you have another form?” Damian asked and Danny nodded silently, the former assassin hummed. He leaned closer,” may I see it?” Damian asked and Danny shook his head.

”No, that would lead them to me even faster. The more of my powers I use the stronger their signal will be to track me,” he explained and Damian stood up.

Danny watched him,” I am going to talk to my father about this. He will be able to contact the Justice League about these GIW,” Damian said before turning and leaving the apartment.

Chapter Text

Jason narrowed his eyes in suspicion, Danny had called out suddenly and hadn’t been into work for nearly a week. Damian was acting strange too, he had been making even more trips to the Alley than he usually did. Every time he headed to an apartment building near the docks.

After the eighth time he placed a bug in Damian, so now he was sitting in his office waiting for the results.

”Danny, I have returned,” he spoke softly, and wasn’t that a shock? Damian was never soft for anyone except his animals. Jason heard the opening of a door and then the line filled with static.

He cursed and tried to fix the issue but got no results.

---

Danny hesitantly opened the door, looking back and forth in the hallway before allowing Damian to come inside. The younger male had been visiting him constantly for the past couple of days to make sure he was alright. When he came over they also discussed their plans going forward dealing with the GIW.

”How are you feeling today?” Damian asked and Danny smiled a little, it felt nice to have someone he could depend on.

”I’m okay, my hands have been a little shaky today and my legs are a little weak,” he explained. Damian frowned and inched closer.

”Would you like me to get you anything?” Damian asked and Danny shook his head in negative. The half ghost pulled his blanket more around his shoulders, still cradling his mug of coffee.

”I appreciate the offer but I’m okay Damian. What did your dad say about the GIW?” Danny asked.

” He was rather…displeased. Father promised that the Justice League had no knowledge of them and he would make sure they couldn’t hurt you,” Damian explained and Danny hummed.

”How does he know that the Justice League wasn’t aware of the GIW?” Danny asked and Damian mentally cursed.

He schooled his expression,” father is one of their biggest funders. Because of that he is a trusted associate of theirs,” he explained coolly. Danny hummed and took the answer, the two spent the rest of the day together until Damian had to return to the manor.

---

Agent M scowled as she looked at the screen, they had gotten a burst of Phantom’s signature over a week ago. It was the closest they had been in months to finding the abomination.

She logged the location and went over to the monitor, so Phantom had escaped to Gotham. It probably hoped to keep itself hidden with the ambient ectoplasm in the air.

Agent M packed up her things and strapped an ectoblaster to her hip, she walked up Agent J and smiled.

”Honey…we can finally destroy it. Let’s head to Gotham,” she said and Agent J nodded, holding an ecto bazooka.

---

Danny left his apartment for the first time since the incident, Damian was with him as he got groceries. He was still paranoid, the GIW could have deployed agents by now and they could be hot on his heels.

The half ghost was in the middle of grabbing some eggs when he heard the cocking of an ectoblaster. His breath caught in his throat and a chill went up his spine, Damian caught the action and turned.

”Step away from the ectoplasmic scum civilian,” Agent M snarled, her weapon trained on Danny’s chest. Damian refused, taking a step closer to the half ghost.

“He is my friend, I will not abandon him,” Damian said firmly and Agent M gritted her teeth, finger tightening on the trigger.

”That monster can’t comprehend things like friendship, it doesn’t even have sentience. What makes you think it won’t tear you apart?” She argued. Damian growled and stepped more in front of Danny.

He is as human as any of us. Why does it matter that he’s a different species?” Damian asked and Agent M scoffed.

Agent M’s face began turning red with fury,” is that right? Then has it told you it murdered my son and is using his skin to walk amongst us?” She snapped. Damian felt sick at the implication of Danny walking around in his own corpse.

”Show yourself to him, ghost, show him what you really are,” Agent J snarled. Damian turned around and saw Danny’s haunted expression, the eighteen year old squeezed his eyes shut at the same time a white ring appeared around his middle.

The rings separated into two and washed over his body, his right arm now looked mangled. Constellations barely wrapped around exposed muscle and bone, his legs and torso looking identical. His ribs were exposed, cracked and sickly green as his cheeks now looked hollow.

Danny was missing his right eye, but Damian wasn’t fixated on Danny’s mangled body, what he focused on was how disgusted Danny looked with himself. His skin was a sickly pale blue and his once black hair had turned stark white, his blue eyes bright green.

“Are you responsible for this?” Damian snarled, taking Danny’s now clawed hand. The half ghost looked at him in mild shock, both GIW agents bristled at the response. The rush of feet caught Damian’s attention and he saw GCPD approaching.

”Officers. These two attempted to assault my friend,” Damian said and the officers froze, some cursing when they saw Danny.

” You can’t possibly believe that? Look at that thing!” Agent J boomed, waving around his bazooka.

“Sir, can we have your statement?” A female officer shakily asked Danny, pulling out a pad and pen. The half ghost looked at Damian, when his hand was squeezed slightly he looked back to the officer.

“I was…getting groceries. They approached and pulled a gun on me,” Danny said hesitantly, his voice coming out staticy and wrong. The officer nodded and looked between the agents and then to the other shoppers.

"Is this what happened?" she asked and an elderly woman confirmed that was the truth, the officers nodded and went to arrest the agents who backed away and ran out of the store. The other shoppers continued to stare at Danny, making the half ghost curl in on himself, Damian glared and tightened his grip on Danny's hand, dragging him to the checkout and setting a few twenties on the counter before walking outside.

"Let's return to your apartment," Damian said and Danny nodded slightly, lifting his body off of the ground and catching Damian off guard. Danny flew slowly, his stark white hair tousled by the stale Gotham air.

---

Damian finished putting away Danny's groceries and walked into the small living room, seeing Danny sitting on the couch now in his human form. He carefully approached so he wouldn't scare the half ghost. Danny looked over, his entire being screaming that he was in pain, the former assassin hesitantly reached over and took Danny's hand. He waited for Danny to say something, anything about what had just happened.

"I'm sorry, I really never wanted you to see that. I didn't...always look like that in my ghost form," Danny explained and Damian frowned. Danny looked away after a moment," I didn't expect them to find me so quickly," he whispered.

"Danny, were those people...you parents?" Damian asked and the half ghost flinched before nodding, the information made Damian feel sick to his stomach. He tightened his grip on Danny's hand," how could they pull a gun on you? The things they said were disgusting," he snapped.

"They don't see me as their son anymore. I told them about my ghost form and they acted like they accepted me but that same night they let the GIW agents into the house and carted me off to one of their compounds," Danny explained. Damian clenched his jaw in anger," my sister and friends probably think I'm dead, they had me for three years before I was able to escape," he said quietly.

Damian felt rage boiling beneath his skin," come to the manor with me, you will be safe there," the former assassin said, standing up suddenly. Danny startled and looked at him with wide eyes," father will learn to accept it," he said and Danny swallowed thickly. The half ghost nodded and Damian smiled," I will help you pack your things, Todd can help us bring your stuff over," he said.

"Todd?" Danny questioned and Damian nodded.

"One of my brothers, he is a headache but the one I trust most to keep your existence secret," he explained and Danny nodded, standing up to start packing his things.

Chapter Text

Danny looked up at the manor nervously, he really hoped that Damian's father didn't immediately kick him out, he just wanted to feel safe. Damian took his hand and the half ghost looked over, seeing the younger male smiling slightly at him. The two of them moved forward and Damian pulled one of the front doors open, he looked back and forth before swiftly pulling Danny inside.

Damian went up the grand staircase and turned right towards the living quarters, he opened one of the doors to reveal a large room furnished with a queen bed fitted with silk sheets, a desk off to the side as well as a wardrobe set against the far wall. The former assassin pulled Danny into the room and shut the door, taking Danny's bags and placing them on the bed.

"Each room has a private bath attached to it, you will not have to expose your scars to any of my family. If you need anything at all I will provide it for you," Damian said and Danny felt a little overwhelmed. Damian was doing so much for him, giving him a safer place to live and making sure that he was comfortable, bringing the GIW to his fathers attention because the Justice League apparently had never heard of them.

"Thank you Damian, you really didn't have to do this for me," Danny said softly, running his fingers over the duvet on the bed. Damian clicked his teeth, walking up to Danny and taking his hand again.

"Of course I did. You deserve to feel safe, you deserve protection. You deserve love," Damian told him, his voice becoming softer as he continued. Danny looked over at him, something in his chest fluttering at the last bit, besides his friends and sister no one had been as accepting of his ghost half. Damian cleared his throat," I will allow you to settle in, let me know if you need anything," Damian said before slowly raising Danny's hand to his face, kissing his knuckles and then sweeping out of the room.

---

Damian knocked on Danny's door softly before opening it, he smiled when he saw Danny asleep in his bed. The half ghost looked the most comfortable he had since Damian met him, the former assassin set down the plate of food and carefully woke up Danny. The eighteen year old slowly blinked awake, sitting up and rubbing his eyes.

"Sorry to wake you. I brought you something to eat," Damian said and Danny smiled, taking the plate of food from the bedside table. Damian shifted slightly on his feet," I didn't know what your dietary restrictions were so I just made one of my favorites," he explained, Danny took a bite and practically started glowing.

"It's really good, thank you Damian," Danny smiled and Damian felt his cheeks warm, the former assassin turned and cleared his throat. He was a Robin, and as such he had to remain composed at all times, but Danny really made that hard sometimes. The half ghost shifted and sat with his legs hanging over the edge of the bed," Damian, does anyone besides you and Jason know I'm here?" he asked.

Damian paused and glanced at Danny," I may have...forgotten to inform father you would be staying here," he said and Danny nearly choked.

"Damian! You can't just invite me into your home without anyone knowing, what if I was a murderer or something?" Danny panicked and Damian whipped around, taking Danny's hands in his own.

"You are not a murderer, why would you call yourself as such?" he questioned and Danny rolled his eyes, causing Damian to bristle.

"Your dad doesn't know that, he could probably have me killed or something," Danny said irrationally and Damian scowled, tightening his grip slightly. Damian would never allow someone to hurt Danny again.

"Father will not have you killed, he will not kick you out of the manor either. I won't allow it," Damian promised, Danny let out a shaky breath and nodded, allowing Damian to run his thumb over his knuckles.

---

Alfred knew that Damian had brought someone into the manor, he could feel it as soon as they entered. When someone has been around for as long as he has, they learn to feel when such a powerful entity comes close. He had been serving the Wayne family for many years, since before Bruce was even conceived, the butler had met Thomas when he was still serving in the royal air force.

The two had become good friends, by extension he became good friends with Martha as well, it broke his heart when they passed. Bruce was left behind to grieve his parents but Alfred made sure that he was never alone. Alfred loved the boy like his own son, and then Bruce began bringing children of his own into the manor. Children who had lost their own parents or were not safe, Alfred had never been so proud.

The butler finished dusting and looked up the stairs at the many photos, this family was something he would always cherish, even in death.

---

"Master Damian, is Danny here?" Alfred asked as the youngest Wayne child walked into the kitchen, Damian went still and turned to him. His face was void of any recognizable reaction but Alfred could see right through him. The butler hummed and rose a brow," does Master Bruce know of this development?" he asked and Damian sniffed, looking away from the butler.

"Danny required a place to stay. We have ample room in the manor," Damian explained and Alfred smiled, the boy was truly Master Bruce's son. Maybe he was a little violent but he still cared for people.

"I see, will he be requiring anything? Is he hungry at all?" Alfred asked and Damian shook his head, tension visibly releasing from his shoulders. Damian walked across the kitchen and grabbed a kettle to begin making some tea.

"That won't be necessary, I already brought him something to eat. Right now I'm preparing him some tea so he can have something to drink after his shower," Damian explained and Alfred nodded, continuing his cleaning.

---

Damian and Danny sat together, the former assassin placing a heating pad on Danny's arm to hopefully soothe some of his pain. Danny looked at him gratefully, cradling the mug of hot tea in his hands. The two were primarily sitting in silence, Damian appreciated the fact that Danny didn't feel like he needed to fill the silence with endless conversation.

"Danny, would you be willing to tell me what those people did to you? I understand if this is too forward, but it will help the Justice League build a case to disband them," Damian said, noticing the way Danny tensed. The half ghost shifted a little in place, his hair falling over his eyes slightly.

"They wanted to kill me, Damian. The GIW and most of the adults in my home town hate my ghost half, no matter what I did they always found a way to twist the truth and say that I was tricking everyone. Before they ended me they wanted to see "how I ticked", they cut me open and removed my organs, I was left strapped to the table for hours. The sterile air made my insides burn as they regrew.

When they saw that my organs grew back after being removed they started removing my limbs, sometimes they'd be removed multiple times a day, growing back slower the less time they had to finish regenerating. It's why my arm and leg look so mangled in my ghost form, they caused permanent nerve damage in my right arm and both legs from how many times they were removed. In human form it just hurts, but in ghost form you can see the true extent of the damage," he explained.

"Your right eye, I noticed it was missing in ghost form," Damian commented and Danny flinched.

"I'm very...solid, for a ghost. They wanted to observe everything they could, hence they took my eye multiple times to see if it worked the same as a human eye," Danny grimaced and Damian hummed. The former assassin leaned in closer and Danny's entire body sagged, he rested his head on Damian's shoulder and in response he reached up to run his fingers through Danny's hair.

---

On the third night since Danny came to the manor, the half ghost had a nightmare, it was a memory of the first time his limbs had been removed. He was reminded of the searing pain as their ectoranium laced tools ripped through flesh and shattered bone. It only ended when he was shaken awake to see Damian standing over him, his hair wasn't slicked back as usual, sticking out in every direction from sleep.

"Danny, everything is okay. I am here," Damian promised and Danny grabbed him in a hug, sniffling and trying to keep tears from escaping his eyes. Damian climbed into the bed with him and pulled the duvet cover over his legs. The former assassin carefully laid the two of them down and pulled Danny close, bringing an arm up to rest gently on the back of Danny's head.

Danny let out a shaky breath and snuggled into Damian's shoulder," sleep, I am right here with you," Damian assured and the half ghost closed his eyes.

---

"Good morning Dami!" Dick shouted as he threw open the door to this little brothers room, he paused when he saw that his brother was not in his bed. In fact, the bed wasn't even made, the blankets looked like they had just been thrown to the side as if Damian got up in a rush. The oldest Wayne child furrowed his brows and stepped out of the room, he walked down the hall and paused outside the door closest to Damian's room.

He heard shuffling from inside and reached for the handle, slowly pushing the door open, his eyes widened when he saw his youngest brother laying in bed with someone else. The other person in the bed was older than Damian, extremely pale too, even in the dim morning light of the room Dick could tell that. Damian had his arms wrapped around the older male while the older male was resting his head on Damian's shoulder.

A grin broke out on Dick's face, figuring this is why Damian's had been so secretive lately, because he had found someone important to him. The oldest Wayne child quietly backed out of the doorway and shut the door, Damian would tell the family when he was ready.

Chapter Text

Damian walked into the kitchen around ten,  dressed for the day with his hair perfectly styled, he took an apple from the bowl on the island and went into the fridge for some yogurt. Dick made himself known when he cleared his throat, the former assassin paused and turned to face him.

"Morning Dami, you seeing anyone lately?" Dick asked and the oldest Wayne child didn't miss the way that Damian's cheeks tinted with pink. Dick grinned and leaned against the island," what's their name? Are they a boy or girl?" he asked and Damian bristled.

"That is not your business," he snapped, tightening his grip on the yogurt and going to walk out of the kitchen. Dick watched him go, deciding not to press the subject any further right now, if Damian didn't want to say anything there was probably a good reason.

---

Danny stretched as he woke up, yawning widely and exposing his sharper than average canines, he looked over when he heard the bedroom door open and smiled at Damian. The former assassin crossed the room swiftly and handed him a cup of yogurt along with a spoon.

"I wasn't sure what you would want, I apologize my skills in the kitchen are not good enough to cook for you," Damian apologized and Danny just laughed at him, opening the yogurt and taking a small bite. The half ghost shook his head, smiling slightly.

"It's fine Damian. You're already doing more than enough for me," Danny said and Damian hummed, going to walk out of the room and grab his bag for school. He was stopped by the half ghost," Damian? I love you," Danny said softly and Damian blushed before stepping out of the room.

---

The former assassin tried not to smile as he slipped into the car, Danny returned his affections, for that Damian was overjoyed. Alfred simply smiled, assuming that something good had happened and started driving towards Gotham academy.

At the manor, Danny peaked out into the hallway, he was getting tired of being cooped up in this bedroom nonstop and wanted to explore the manor. He would just have to do his best to remain undetected by the Wayne family while Damian was gone. Danny could feel how much love was in this manor, it was the kind of love that lingered and would always welcome a member of the family home.

Danny paused at the top of the grand stairs, staring at the many family photos hung on the wall, he smiled at one of Damian on his birthday. The boy was scowling with his arms crossed while what Danny assumed was his brothers surrounded him. Bruce Wayne stood off to the side with an old man in a suit, he must be a butler, watching his children with fondness.

A small part of Danny felt envious, he had never been able to have birthday parties when he was younger, he never had enough friends for parties. His parents were absent at best and neglectful as worst, Jazz is the one who raised him and wiped his face when he made a mess during a meal or soothed him when he scraped his knees while playing. He shook his head and walked down the staircase into the foyer, Danny turned and walked down on of the hallways, stopping at a study.

Danny stepped inside and looked around, it seemed like a basic study but there was something off at the same time. The half ghost stepped closer to the grandfather clock between some bookshelves and furrowed his brows. He reached out and opened the glass that protected the clock hands, Danny moved the hour hand over to the four and it whirred, pulling out and moving to the side.

---

Danny gulped as he came into a massive cave, this was unexpected but at the same time made so much sense. There were vehicles and tech everywhere, a giant penny on a podium and...was that a dinosaur? Danny gripped his arm. This was the batcave, which meant the entire Wayne brood consisted of the Gotham vigilantes. There was a massive computer in the center of the cave with cases on the side.

The Robin suit is what stood out to Danny the most, his stomach did a flip as he realized that Damian was the Dark Knights sidekick. He really wanted to understand how the massive computer worked too, Danny was pulled out of his thoughts by someone clearing their throat.

Danny yelped and turned around, seeing Bruce Wayne standing there, he clearly wasn't expecting anyone to be down here but his shock was quickly replaced with cold apprehension.

"Who are you? How did you get down here?" he demanded, taking a step closer as Danny took a step back, his heart pounding in his chest. Damian wasn't supposed to be back from school for at least another two hours, which meant Danny had to somehow explain who he was and hopefully not be killed.

"I'm...I...Damian let me stay here. I didn't mean to find the Batcave," Danny stammered and Bruce narrowed his eyes, clenching his fists at his sides. The half ghost felt like turning invisible and running away.

"Damian let you stay here...he never told me someone was staying in the manor," Bruce said and Danny rubbed the back of his neck. He figured that Damian still hadn't told his father that he was staying here.

"Yeah...I told him he needed to say something but he didn't listen I guess," Danny said and Bruce hummed," I won't...say anything about this. I promise, I couldn't betray Damian's trust like that," Danny said, squeezing his arm. Bruce nodded and walked over, the half ghost forced himself to stay in place.

"You must be who Damian told me about then. I'm really sorry about the Ghost Investigation Ward, the Justice League never knew about them," Bruce said and Danny looked at him in shock. He had never received an apology for what had happened to him, for the Justice League's lack of interference. Bruce offered his hand," if you'd allow me, why don't we talk?" he asked and Danny nodded.

---

Damian walked into the manor, fully anticipating to go straight to Danny's room and climb into bed with the half ghost. What greeted him was his father standing in the foyer with his arms crossed, Danny standing sheepishly beside him. The former assassin let out a long suffering sigh and set down his bag.

"I suppose a talk is in order?" he questioned and Bruce nodded wordlessly, gesturing for Damian to follow him to one of the sitting rooms. Bruce sat on the arm chair while Danny and Damian sat on the couch.

"When were you going to tell me you allowed someone into the manor?" Bruce asked and Damian scrunched up his face, reaching over and taking Danny's hand. The half ghost allowed it, squeezing Damian's hand to try and ease his nerves, Bruce caught the action in an instant.

"Eventually, I wanted to make sure that Danny was adjusted before letting you know," Damian said and Bruce hummed, folding his hands in front of his face. Danny squeezed Damian's hand again and the former assassin glanced at him.

"I see, Damian, you should probably know that while you were at school today your friend found the Batcave. He knows our identities," Bruce said and Damian's eyes widened, looking over to Danny who was looking at him with uncertainty. The billionaire coughed a little," with that being said. We're going to have to talk about our steps moving forward," Bruce said.

Damian scowled," what steps would those be?" he demanded, scooting closer to Danny and allowing the half ghost to press closer to him in return. Bruce hummed and leaned back in his chair. The former assassin rubbed his thumb over Danny's knuckles," if you plan on kicking Danny out of the manor, just know that I won't allow it," he snapped, challenging his father to say so.

"That's not what's going to happen. I just need to know what exactly happened so we can have a better case against the Ghost Investigation Ward," Bruce said and Danny flinched, he really didn't want to talk about what the GIW did again. Damian noticed and squeezed his hand in reassurance.

"I will tell you. He shouldn't have to recount what was done to him," Damian said and Bruce hummed, the former assassin looked over at Danny," step out if you don't want to hear this," Damian said carefully and Danny nodded, standing up and letting his hand linger in Damian's for a moment before walking out.

---

Bruce clenched his jaw as Damian finished explaining everything that the GIW had done to Danny, it was disgusting to think that the GIW were okay with torturing a child. The billionaire stood up and walked up to his son, Damian stood.

"The Ghost Investigation Ward should easily be disbanded with this information. Before you go back to Danny...do you love him?" Bruce asked, smiling a little. Damian bristled and tried to hide the blush on his cheeks. Bruce chuckled a little and placed a hand on Damian's shoulder," there's nothing wrong with that chum, if he makes you happy that's all that matters to me," he said.

Damian watched his father walk out of the room and smiled before following him outside, he took Danny's hand and the two walked to one of the private studies.

Chapter Text

Bruce sent out the message announcing a family meeting within the hour, members of the family quickly filtered into the manor as Damian tightened his grip on Danny's hand. The half ghost looked over at Damian and smiled slightly, appreciating the former assassin's support, Dick was the very first to approach them, grinning widely as he saw Damian holding Danny's hand.

"Tch. back off Grayson,"  Damian snapped, noticing how uncomfortable Danny was with Dick's close proximity. Jason walked into the room and grinned at Danny," Todd," the former assassin acknowledged. Jason walked over and ruffled Danny's hair, the half ghost grumbling and weakly swatting Jason's hand away. Bruce walked into the room and cleared his throat.

The Wayne children all sat around and waited for Bruce to tell them why they had been called here, Danny nervously shift from his spot on the couch and Damian rubbed his thumb over the half ghost's knuckles. Danny didn't know what to do if he was being honest, he hadn't had the support of other people in so long he was scared to tell anyone besides Damian what he was.

"This is Danny. He is under our protection," Bruce said and the Wayne children collectively looked at each other before looking at Damian and Danny. The half ghost waved awkwardly and Bruce cleared his throat to take the attention off of the half ghost. Bruce looked at Damian," Danny, do you feel comfortable with telling them everything?" Bruce asked and Danny gulped before nodding.

"If you do not feel comfortable I can tell them," Damian whispered and Danny smiled at him gratefully. The half ghost let out a shaky breath before starting to speak, trying to think of where to start.

---

"I'm not completely human. There are people who want to strap me down to a table and rip me apart in the name of science, what's worse is that nothing they've done is illegal. There are laws in place that give them full legal permission to do these things, they've already gotten me once, I'm terrified to think of what they'll do if they ever capture me again. Before they captured me I was...trying to protect my hometown, I was in an accident that changed me and I felt like it was my responsibility to take care of the threats that came with the arrival of my powers," Danny gripped his arm tightly, his death scar aching.

"No one ever fully trusted me, there were too many instances of me being controlled or framed for crimes that I would never commit. Those instances led the to Ghost Investigation Ward being established along with the Anti-Ectoplasmic Entities Acts. The Anti-Ecto Acts makes it fully legal to capture and experiment on any entity that exists or sustains itself on ectoplasmic energy, in short, myself and countless others. At first the Ghost Investigation Ward were incompetent, but they started getting better, more ruthless in their pursuit of ectoplasmic entities, they didn't care how many humans they hurt as long as the ghost was captured," Danny explained.

"Why? Why would they immediately go to capture and destroy?" Dick asked and Danny bit the inside of his cheek before his expression hardened.

"Why? Because they're human. They try to destroy what they can't understand or deem too dangerous to exist alongside them, humans are inherently violent and fearful creatures. Most countries or civilizations have led themselves to their own destruction over paranoia and hate, the Ghost Investigation Ward is a result of the primal human fear of the unknown. I was ripped apart over and over because they wanted to know why I was more different than other ghosts, all in the name of science," Danny snarled.

"Yes ghosts are dangerous, but there are peaceful ghosts too, ghosts that want nothing to do with this plain of existence and would rather live out their afterlives in peace. The ghosts that come here are only trying to fill their obsession, their reason for existing, they just forget how fragile human lives are because they've been dead for so long," Danny ran a hand through his hair.

"If you don't mind me asking, can we see what they did to you? Bruce asked and Danny's head snapped over to him before letting his transformation rings wash over his body. Dick put a hand over his mouth and Jason clenched his jaw while Tim look ready to burn something down, Bruce looked like vengeance put into human form. Tim stood up and walked over to one of the cabinets, pulling out a camera.

"We need photo evidence, is that alright?" he asked and Danny hesitated before reaching forward, infusing the camera with ectoplasm.

"I hope you don't mind that I infused your camera with ectoplasm. Normal electronics and cameras don't react well to me in this form," Danny said and Tim's eyes almost sparkled.

"It's totally fine. I'd like to pick your brain sometime about the properties of ectoplasm, I've heard about it as an alternate energy form but very little is known about it," he said and Danny almost smiled. He exposed his mangled arm and made sure that Tim got a clear shot of his open torso, Damian looked ready for murder as Tim snapped multiple pictures of the damage.

Damian suddenly stood up and stepped in front of Danny," I believe you have enough pictures Drake. Come Danny, we are going to see my animals," the former assassin said and Danny nodded, shifting back into human form.

"Hold up demon brat, you and Danny seem real cozy. Anything you want to share with us?" Jason asked, tone teasing, Damian whipped around, blush spreading all the way to the tips of his ears. Dick and Tim looked at him and pressed for an answer while Bruce sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose.

"Danny is my beloved, that is all you need to know," Damian said before speed walking out of the room with Danny right behind him.

---

"You called me your beloved," Danny whispered as they came into the barn, Batcow mooing softly as she walked over to the half ghost, nudging his hand with her nose. Damian blushed and turned to Danny as he held Alfred the cat.

"I did, what of it?" Damian asked and Danny smiled, blushing softly," you are precious to me, I loved you from the moment you took care of my wounds that night," Damian said, walking over to him. The former assassin reached forward and took Danny's hand," you are beautiful. You easily could have destroyed humanity in revenge for what has been done to you," he said.

Danny swallowed thickly," I'm not going to lie, there are times I've thought about it. Destroying humanity, while the GIW had me I was so angry but then I remember the future that would come from my anger. So I came here, hoping to disappear," he explained. Damian hummed and the two sank down to be sitting on the barn floor," I'm really happy I met you Damian, and Jason. You two have helped me feel better about my situation," Danny smiled.

Damian hummed," could you tell me about before the GIW? You mentioned protecting your town," he asked and the former assassin could have sworn that Danny lit up a little, continuing to gently pet Batcow, who had sunk down to the floor with them right beside Danny.

"I was a hero. Phantom was what I went by, most of the high school and younger kids loved me. They would defend me when the adults and GIW called me a menace, they knew that I was just trying to help. I even had my own fan club, one girl at the high school had a shrine dedicated to me in her locker," Danny laughed and Damian smiled fondly.

"My best friends were always by my side helping...and eventually my sister found out and started helping too," Danny hesitated, his brow furrowing," my sister wasn't the greatest at first, she kept getting in the way...but in the end all she wanted to do was help," Danny teared up a little. Damian shifted to sit right beside Danny, hesitantly wrapping an arm around him.

Danny wiped his eye with the back of his hand," sorry Damian, I miss them," Danny said quietly and Damian frowned.

"Do not apologize for missing people who are important to you. Have you thought about contacting them?" Damian asked and Danny nodded.

"Of course I have, I just...don't know what to say to them. "Hey guys! Sorry I ghosted you for three years, I was being torn apart by the GIW and escaped to Gotham, going into hiding like a coward!" How could I say that to them?" Danny sighed, running a hand through his hair.

"Danny, they wouldn't be upset with you for going through that torture. If they truly care about you they would only be happy that you're alive," Damian assured him and Danny smiled, leaning close and kissing Damian on the cheek.

"Thank you Damian, I don't know what I would do without you," Danny smiled and Damian tried to regain his composure as he processed that Danny had just kissed him.

Chapter Text

Ever since Danny had disappeared Jazz hadn't said a word to her parents, how could she when she knew for a fact they were responsible. She had been away on a college visit when Danny disappeared, there was no way she could have prevented it and she hated herself for that. She couldn't imagine what her little brother had probably gone through if he was taken by the GIW.

She searched for him anywhere she could think of only to turn up no results, once she had scraped together enough money she moved out of Amity to Star City for college. She couldn't stand to be in the same town as the people who threw her little brother away like he meant nothing, of course they had always been that way. They had always belittled Danny and compared him to her, he was never smart enough for them, nothing he ever did impressed them, it made her sick.

Jazz read over the morning paper and her eyes widened at the headline "Bruce Wayne Advocates for the Rights of Ectoplasmic Beings: Ghost Investigation Ward and Anti-Ectoplasmic Entities Acts to be removed". She put a hand over her mouth and read through the article, there was no way, she assumed that no one outside of Amity really knew about the GIW or the Anti Ecto Acts.

With shaking hands her eyes stopped over where it said that Bruce Wayne had privately spoken with an ectoplasmic entity and seen the damage that the GIW had done. He called it inhumane and sick, a complete and blatant violation of the Metahuman Protection Laws. She got up from her spot on the couch and went to her hall closet, pulling out a suitcase and starting to pack clothes, as well as the things she took from Danny's room before she left.

---

Jazz could feel it the moment she entered Gotham, Sam and Tucker right beside her, the air was thick with ambient ectoplasm and the smog kept any moonlight from being cast onto the streets. She could see why Danny might have come here, the ambient ectoplasm in the air was enough to possibly cover his ectoplasmic signature. The redhead didn't know where to start, Gotham was big, and one of the most crime ridden cities in the world.

The three walked down the street, Jazz making sure she had a good grip on her suitcase, they really had to get a hotel for the night. Their flight from Star City had been delayed and they only got into the city a little over an hour ago. Jazz was liminal enough that she could feel the energy coming off of other living beings, which meant that she knew they were being followed right now.

The redhead had brought her Phantom Blaster, the one that Danny had made for her after improving their parents shoddy invention, she would never use her parents tech again. It was strapped to her hip so she could have easy access to it, the footsteps were getting closer and more frequent, she furrowed her brows and whipped around, firing the blaster with no hesitation.

The man who had been following her went down hard and she glared at him, before she could walk away Red Hood dropped down. He nudged the guy with his foot and looked at Jazz, he hadn't said anything yet but Jazz could feel that he was somewhat impressed.

"He's not dead, just stunned," Jazz said, placing the blaster back on her hip, Red Hood let out a low whistle, the sound coming out garbled because of the voice modulator in his helmet.

"Well damn, I like a woman who can handle herself, and you two are alright? Where'd you get the gun?" Red Hood asked and Jazz huffed, placing a hand on her hip.

"My brother made it. I'm looking for him so I'll be on my way, goodnight Red Hood," she said before the three turned to walk away, the Gotham vigilante followed after them, she sighed and turned to him.

"Your brother must be talented to make something like that. I'll walk with you till you get to a hotel," Red Hood said and Jazz smiled at the mention of Danny, her little brother was one of the smartest people she knew.

"Thanks Hood, and yeah, my little brother is a genius, give him any scrap and he can make something out of it. I was always so proud of him," she said and Hood hummed, putting his hands in the pockets of his leather jacket.

"Well maybe I can help you find your brother. He's here in Gotham right? Give me a name and I'm sure I can track him down for ya," Red Hood offered and Jazz turned to him, her expression doubtful. She let out a breath and stopped walking, Hood stopped too and waited for her answer.

"His name is Danny. He disappeared three years ago and I've been trying to find him ever since," Jazz explained and every muscle in Red Hood's body locked up. He snapped out of it after a minute or two and hummed.

"You're in luck, I know where he works. One of my men, Jason Todd, runs the Martha Wayne Foundation, Danny is an employee there," Red Hood explained and Jazz's eyes widened, soon starting to brim with tears. She started walking again and soon stopped outside of her hotel, Hood stood a little bit away from her," stay safe, I hope you see your brother again," he said before disappearing into the night.

---

Jazz stood outside of the Martha Wayne Foundation, she looked at the photo of her little brother and smiled, they were finally going to see him again. She couldn't have come here without Danny's best friends, they wanted to see him again just as badly as she did. The three walked up the steps to the building and entered the building, there were a lot of small children inside, participating in activities while workers made sure the place was cleaned up.

Then, on the far side of the building, was Danny. He was laying on the mat with children piled on top of him as he laughed, openly exposing his fangs and sharper than normal teeth. At his side was Damian Wayne, smiling fondly at Danny. Sam was the first to move, approaching her best friend, Danny noticed her and his eyes widened.

"Kids, why don't you go play with Damian?" he suggested and the youngest Wayne child bristled before he noticed Sam, nodding and leading the children away. Danny stood up and Sam grabbed him in a hug, holding him tight. Danny winced a little at the pressure on his sore body, but didn't say anything, Tucker and Jazz walked over to join in the hug.

They pulled away after a minute and Danny smiled at them," we should go somewhere a little more private," he said before leading them to the break room.

---

Sam couldn't believe that she was sitting across from Danny right now, her best friend who she thought was dead was right in front of her. Tucker was catching up with Danny, pulling a few laughs from the half ghost. It almost felt like back in Amity, days after school spent at the Nasty Burger, talking about random shit when they didn't have to worry about ghosts.

"Danny, we missed you so much. What happened?" Tucker asked and Danny's easy smile disappeared, replaced with an uncomfortable frown. As if sensing his distress, Damian swept into the room and sat himself down right beside Danny. Tucker bristled," hey, this is a private-" Tucker started but was cut off by Danny.

"He can stay, I trust Damian," Danny said and the other three looked at each other before nodding, Danny sighed and reached over under the table to take Damian's hand. In response Damian squeezed Danny's hand gently," Damian, these are my best friends and older sister. Sam, Tucker, and Jazz," Danny introduced the three and Damian nodded.

"It is nice to meet you three," he said, trying to be pleasant for the people that Danny cared so much about.

"To answer your question, it was Jack and Maddie. While you were in Star City for your college visit I decided to tell them that I was half ghost, they did a good job of pretending they didn't care but that night they let the GIW into the house and I was taken into custody. I woke up on the operating table with my chest cavity already opened," Danny explained and Jazz looked sick while Damian had an expression of rage.

---

Tucker and Sam were disgusted with the information of what had happened to their friend, Jazz looked ready to return to Amity and destroy everything that Jack and Maddie had built. To think that he had suffered that much and they never knew, Danny assured them that they had no reason to feel bad about it but that didn't eep them from wishing they could have done something.

Then to learn that he now lived with chronic pain because of how many times his limbs had been removed to see if they would regrow made them feel worse. Danny promised them that most days the pain wasn't too bad but they didn't believe it. Danny had always been good at hiding how he truly felt, whether it be how much pain he was in from a ghost fight or if it was how he felt about something that was happening in his life.

He came to Gotham to hide, to hopefully never be found by the GIW again but from what he had said they entered the city a little over a month ago and tried to recapture him while he was getting groceries. Thankfully Damian had been there to defend him and prevent the same thing, if not worse, from happening to Danny again, on top of that Damian knew about Danny's being half ghost.

There was so much they had missed, so much to catch up on, but now they had the time because they were with Danny again and they would make sure that they would never be separated again.

Chapter Text

"So, you're dating Danny," Jazz said, arms crossed over her chest, Damian nodded, curling his fingers into fists on top of his knees. Danny's older sister was intimidating, maybe on the level of Talia. She hummed," and what your intentions with him?" she asked and Damian sat up straight, not wanting to show weakness to one of the people Danny cared most about.

"I wish to make him happy, I will protect him form the Ghost Investigation Ward. That is a promise," Damian said firmly and Jazz rose a brow at him. The former assassin furrowed his brows," I have seen the damage done to Danny, and it enrages me. He told me what they did to him and I had to resist going and killing every single Ghost Investigation Ward agent," Damian told her.

Jazz looked at him before her face softened, moving forward and grabbing the former assassin in a tight hug, unused to the affection Damian awkwardly returned her hug. The redhead pulled away from him, tears brimming her eyes.

"He hasn't been alone?" she asked, wiping her eyes, Damian pursed his lips and tried to come up with an answer for her. Danny did his best to avoid people, but somehow he found his way into the lives of the Wayne family, all because he patched Damian up.

"He has tried his best to be alone, but he found my family, and we welcome him with open arms," Damian said and Jazz nodded, hugging Damian one more time. Damian offered her a tissue and Jazz thanked him, taking it to blow her nose. The former assassin stood," my father is working with the Justice League to get the acts repealed and the GIW disbanded," Damian told her.

"That's good to hear, I've been trying for so long to convince people that they're doing more harm than good," Jazz said and Damian nodded. The two walked out of the private study and Damian smiled when he saw Danny talking to his friends. He seemed so much lighter than he usually did, Damian supposed that it made sense if Danny hadn't seen them in awhile.

---

Danny winced as he sat on the edge of the bed, Damian frowned as he sat right beside his boyfriend," are your muscles hurting again?" the former assassin asked. All Damian got in response was a weak nod, the former assassin scooted closer. He hesitantly placed his hands on Danny's shoulders, being careful with the amount of pressure he applied and where.

"If you will allow me, I can relieve some of the tension?" Damian offered and Danny smiled at him, accepting the offer. The former assassin released a breath he didn't know he had been holding and instructing Danny to lay on his stomach. Danny obeyed and Damian sat to the half ghost's side, continuing to massage Danny's aching muscles, for so many years Damian's hands had been used to kill...and now he had the opportunity to use them to help people.

He finished massaging Danny's sore muscles and the half ghost slowly sat up," do not push yourself. I will get you an aspirin," Damian said before going into his bathroom and grabbing the pill for Danny. The half ghost thanked him silently and took it with the glass of water that Damian had also provided him," rest, I will be right here with you," Damian promised, Danny smiled slightly and yawned, laying back down and making himself comfortable.

Damian cupped Danny's cheek, relishing in the way that the half ghost leaned into the touch and smiled, the former assassin regretfully pulled his hand away and went to get into more comfortable clothes. He returned to the bed and got under the covers, pulling Danny into a hug and falling asleep himself.

---

"So Jazz, would you say that you and Danny are close?" Dick asked and Jazz looked at him wearing an unreadable expression. The eldest Wayne child felt a cold sweat beading on his forehead, he suddenly felt like he was under a magnifying glass.

"I basically raised Danny. Our parents didn't give a shit about him from the second he was born, they never wanted a second kid and they made it obvious every time they looked at him, every time he brought an award home to show them. Eventually he started coming to me for every achievement  or every time he hurt himself, do you know how sad that is? That he came to his older sister rather than his parents?" Jazz asked.

Dick gulped," but I don't regret it, he turned out good because I cared about him and I wouldn't give that up for the world, I love him more than anything," Jazz sighed, pulling her hair up into a ponytail. The eldest Wayne child smiled," I was so scared when I came home from Star City and he was gone, Jack and Maddie wouldn't tell me anything, just that they had finally caught Phantom," Jazz said.

"I'm surprised Damian is still in bed. He's usually out of bed around seven in the morning," Dick said before a grin split across his face," I bet he's cuddling with Danny," he said, going to run upstairs. Jazz scowled and grabbed Dick by the back of his shirt, stopping the eldest Wayne child in his tracks.

"Respect your brothers boundaries," she said and Dick rubbed the back of his neck," you didn't immediately expose Damian for dating did you?" Jazz asked and Dick shook his head. She nodded," then don't disturb him or my brother," she said and Dick nodded. Jazz hummed and let go of Dick's shirt," now come help me make some breakfast, Danny will probably be hungry when he wakes up," she said and the eldest Wayne child nodded.

---

Up on the watchtower, Bruce stood in front of the Justice League," this is Daniel Nightingale, also known as the entity Phantom," he began, gesturing to the projected image of Danny. The Justice Leaguers looked at each other," he is currently under my protection. Robin is...close to him," Bruce said, clearing his throat and moving to the next slide, which had an image of the GIW files.

"Danny was held captive by the Ghost Investigation Ward for three years. In that time they performed inhumane experiments on him to "understand his biology"," Batman explained and Superman looked appalled. Wonder Woman pounded her fist on the table, glaring at the images projected on the screen.

"How have we not heard about this? This is sickening," she seethed, Batman switched to another slide, displaying a copy of the Anti-Ectoplasmic Entities Acts. Every League member read over them, becoming more disgusted.

"This, this is why we haven't heard anything. The Anti-Ectoplasmic Entities Acts makes it entirely legal to do the things that were done to Danny. The Ghost Investigation Ward enforced them without hesitation, they blocked calls to the Justice League," Batman explained. Martian Manhunter was the most disgusted at the information, it reminded him of when he had first come to Earth.

Superman was already established as a hero here, the humans accepted the Kryptonian because he had proved himself to them as trustworthy. It might have been because he was a Martian, an entirely unknown species to the humans who had just come to their planet. They had come to accept him just as they accepted Superman, and now this was happening, humans never stopped surprising him with their ignorance.

Constantine, who had been called in for any questions about ghosts, was becoming more pale by the second. It was a well known rule among magic users that you didn't fuck withe Infinite Realms. The Ghost Investigation Ward, and by extension the U.S Government, were fucking around he really didn't want them to find out. King Phantom had refused to declare war thus far, but after being tortured for three years? He may be willing to let them and their entire realm cease to exist.

"Danny has been left with chronic pain after being freed from the Ghost Investigation Ward. He often suffers from muscle spasms and soreness, Robin is assisting him with these issues," Batman explained. The Leaguers looked at each other before looking back at Batman for an explanation, the Dark Knight sighed," Robin and Danny are dating, Danny trusts Robin fully," he explained.

"Bullocks," Constantine said to himself and Batman looked to him, the lenses of his cowl narrowing into slits," Bats do you even realize what that means for your son?" the occultist asked. Batman grunted and Constantine ran a hand through his hair, grumbling about needing a cigarette," your son has an eldritch god loyal to him. Hell, if anything ever threatened Robin you wouldn't be able to make enough caskets. Realms beings are extremely protective of the people they care about," Constantine explained.

Batman paused," I see, with that being said, we need to take measure to get the Anti-Ecto Acts repealed and the Ghost Investigation Ward disbanded. I want Danny to feel safe, his calls to the Justice League never reached us. We failed him and all of Amity Park, now we have to make it right,"

Chapter Text

Danny stood in front of the Justice League, shifting on his feet nervously, this was nothing like standing in front of his council. He was used to them and Danny knew that they wouldn't care about his mutilated appearance. The League may say that they didn't care but he could feel emotions, disgust was what he felt most often, but when he was with Damian the only emotion he could ever feel was adoration.

He didn't know how to feel about it, Danny had nearly given up on dating because none of his relationships had worked out, Sam wasn't really a very physical person. It was one of the things that weighed on Danny the most during their relationship, he grew up lacking affection from his parents and it affected him more than he thought. Damian reached over and took Danny's hand, the half ghost tightened his grip on the hand offered to him.

"Daniel, we apologize for our lack of action. The League didn't know about the GIW or the Anti-Ectoplasmic Entities Acts," Wonder Woman said, a hand over her chest as she bowed deeply in apology.

"Just Danny is fine...do you...know why you never heard of them?" the half ghost asked and the expressions of the Leaguers shifted, Danny felt something in his chest lurch. He didn't know if he had overstepped with the question and he really didn't want to offend the people who were trying to help him and the Realms.

"We've come to the conclusion that the GIW were blocking signals in and out of Amity Park. Your calls never made it through because they didn't allow it," Batman explained and Danny delt his human appearance flicker a bit. They weren't ignored, they were silenced, left to rot in their small town that most anyone had never heard of while the GIW overran everything and hunted innocent ghosts.

Damian noticed and moved to stand in front of Danny, taking his other hand," look at me Danny, you're fine. We're fixing this," he promised. Danny released a breath and gave Damian a shaky smile," I'm right here with you," Damian gave a small smile. The half ghost nodded and thanked Damian, the former assassin moved to be standing beside Danny again and the meeting continued.

---

"This meeting has been productive, but before we dismiss I have a warning," Danny said and the Leaguers looked at him in alarm," if this issue isn't resolved soon, war is on the horizon," the half ghost warned.

All of the heroes shot up from their seated positions, Danny released a breath through his nose," this is the council of the King's decision. They're appalled with the actions of the GIW and the lack of action against them," he continued. Damian tried to hide the unease that was rising in his gut at the implication," war with the Infinite Realms means the ending of all human lives, the Realms have no regard for if there are innocent humans killed. I'm trying to prevent that," Danny said.

"We understand, we'll try and work fast," Superman said and Danny nodded, turning and walking out of the meeting room. Damian led Danny to one of the observation decks, assuming that the half ghost would love being so close to the stars. His suspicions were correct when Danny looked outside with wide awe struck eyes, Damian shifted on his feet as he thought of Danny's warning.

Death had never scared him, but the prospect of going to war with an entire realm of powerful entities terrified him.

Jazz sighed as she sat in the study, holding a mug of hot tea in her hands, she had been in Gotham for a few days, her main goal being to make sure that her younger brother was safe. She had done that now, Jazz had confirmed that he was safe here in Wayne manor, but he was far from okay. He had been tortured by the GIW for three years, she couldn't imagine the pain that he had experienced.

"Jasmine, do you mind if I join you?" Bruce asked and the redhead hummed, the billionaire sat down in the armchair closest to Jazz. He held his hands together in his lap," what are your plans? We can prepare a room for you, Samantha, and Tucker in the manor if you want," he offered. Jazz pursed her lips, and tightened her grip on the mug in her hands.

"Just Jazz is fine, and I'm not sure. I wanted to make sure Danny was somewhere safe, and he is," the redhead sighed," I've spent so many years acting as a parent to him...and I never minded that, I love him so much. He's safe, hurt but safe, and I feel like he may not need me anymore," Jazz voiced her concerns. Bruce frowned and crossed his arms over his chest.

"Jazz, in the years that I've been a father...there have been ups and downs with all of my children. I don't always say the right thing...or really understand how to help them with their feelings, Alfred has always been better at that. Just like you, I love all of my sons and daughters with everything I have in me, I would fight till my last breath to ensure their happiness. With that being said, if there's one thing I've learned it's that my children will always need me, and I'll always be there to help them. I'm sure Danny is the same way," Bruce said before standing up.

The billionaire walked out of the room and Jazz smiled to herself, finishing her tea and bringing her mug to the kitchen.

Sam and Tucker had decided that Danny had missed out on a lot of media and rented a few videos from the local library. The three friends, plus Damian, settling in the screening room to enjoy Terminatra VI: Requiem. It was horrible, the effects looking like they were out of the sixties and the overall plot being almost laughable, but Danny wouldn't trade this for the world.

He had fallen asleep halfway through, leaning over on Tucker who just smiled at Sam and pulled a blanket from the back of one of the chairs, draping it over the sleeping half ghost's body. Damian watched the three of them happily, these were the people that Danny had trusted before coming to Gotham, these were the people who probably supported Danny with his powers.

"How long have you known Danny?" the former assassin asked and the two of them looked at each other before looking back at Damian.

"We met in third grade. A lot of people picked on him because of his parents, the whole "like father, like son" bullshit," Sam said, running her fingers through Danny's hair. The half ghost hummed in his sleep and leaned into Sam's hand. Sam smiled," my parents were letting me go to public school for the first time and I sort of felt...drawn to him," she explained.

"Dude is funny too, he said the craziest things when we first met, of course everyone thought he was crazy. He would talk about his parents work a lot," Tucker explained and Damian hummed.

"Government Sanctioned Genocide? Justice League speaks out against Ghost Investigation Ward and Anti-Ectoplasmic Entities Acts" an article by Clark Kent. Danny swallowed thickly as he read through the news article, whether the public decided to listen to anything in this article was up for debate. Damian placed a hand on Danny's knee and the half ghost looked over.

"Everything will be fine. The public will side with the Justice League and you, you have provided information to them to be shared with the public," Damian promised him and Danny let out a shaky breath, Jazz reached over and took Danny's hand, smiling at her little brother.

"Damian is right, you'll be free to be fully yourself soon," she said and Danny nodded, thanking the two quietly. Jazz was right that he wouldn't have to be afraid to be fully himself anymore but he didn't know if he really wanted to reveal himself to the world again. His ghost form was mutilated and not easy to look at, Damian may accept him for what he looked like but that didn't mean everyone else would.

Jazz gave Danny's hand one last squeeze before standing up and walking away," I have to go on patrol tonight. Father believes that I have missed too many nights," the former assassin explained and Danny nodded. Damian kissed Danny on the cheek and walked out of the room to prepare for patrol that night.

Chapter 14

Summary:

Obligatory Danny kills the Joker chapter 🗣️

Chapter Text

Damian raced across the rooftops, the misty Gotham air dampening his face, his father was trusting him to run patrols on his own again and he wanted to do his best not to disappoint him. He also wanted to get home quickly so that he could curl up in bed with Danny and hold the half ghost close, run his fingers through his hair and kiss each one of his freckles.

In his distraction, he didn't notice that he was being trailed, Damian stopped on a rooftop and shouted out when he felt a shock go through his entire body. The entire world went dark, a horrible feeling twisting in his gut as he lost consciousness.

Back at Wayne Manor, Danny snapped awake, someone had hurt who he had cared about and they were going to pay. The half ghost winced in pain as his entire form started to change, bones shifting and his limbs becoming longer as two more sets of arms came from his sides. His mouth widened into a maw, rows of razor sharp teeth bared, cracked horns sprouted from his skull and the crown of frozen fire appeared over his head.

Claws tipped his fingers and his sclera became black, irises turning bright green, his black hair became white and he let out an inhuman roar before flying through the wall of the manor and towards Damian.

---

"Hello bird boy, Bats sure knows how to pick his birds," Joker cackled and Damian glared at the clown, I wonder how he'll react if I do the same thing to you that I did to his second Robin," he grinned. Joker raised a crowbar and Damian braced himself for the first hit, the feeling of the crowbar splitting his skin and causing him the same pain that Jason felt when he died.

Though, before the crowbar made contact with him, something burst through the wall of the old funhouse. Joker turned and his eyes widened when he saw an eldritch horror looming over Jokers men. Damian blinked, instantly recognizing his beloved, Danny ripped through the men and growled as he approached Joker, the clown continued to cackle and pulled out a gun.

He emptied out the magazine, the bullet crushing in on themselves as they made contact with Danny's body, falling to the ground harmlessly. Joker backed away, throwing the gun at Danny, the half ghost caught the gun and crushed it in his hand. Danny's form seemed to swell and his entire body opened up, revealing endless darkness pared with reaching arms.

Joker began to scream and the arms grabbed the clown, dragging him towards the darkness, Joker clawed at the floor and begged Damian to save him. Danny's body closed and Joker's severed arm feel to the ground, the half ghost looked at Damian and floated over, undoing the ropes. Damian stood up and no sooner than he did, Danny shifted back to human and fell forward.

The former assassin reached forward and caught Danny in his arms, Damian brushed some hair from Danny's face and sighed. He hefted the half ghost up and walked out of the funhouse

---

Damian set Danny down in their bed and made sure he was comfortable, pulling the blankets over him and going to get out of his Robin suit. The former assassin took a quick shower and stepped back into his bedroom. He crawled into the bed with his boyfriend and pulled him close, the half ghost's eyes fluttered open and his expression melted into one of horror.

"I'm sorry...I didn't mean to kill him, this is going to set everything back isn't it?"  he panicked, Damian shushed Danny and wiped the tears from his eyes. The half ghost sniffled and leaned into Damian's touch.

"Everything will be fine. The Joker was a criminal that needed to be taken care of, if anything you will be praised for bringing his death," Damian explained and Danny's brows furrowed. Damian frowned," yes father will be displeased about Joker's death...but if he knows it was to save me he will hopefully not be as angry," the former assassin explained.

"Okay...I love you Damian," Danny said before closing his eyes and falling asleep, Damian felt his heart swell, he rested his hand on the back of Danny's head and kissed his forehead.

"I love you too," Damian whispered before falling asleep himself.

---

"Father, the Joker is dead," Damian said the next morning, standing in his father's private study, the billionaire paused and looked at him with an unreadable expression. He captured me last night and was prepared to...repeat his actions with Todd," Damian explained. Bruce stood up from his chair and powerwalked over to Damian, checking him over for any injuries.

"Did he hurt you at all? What happened?" Bruce asked and Damian stepped out of his father's reach, debating how to explain that Danny had been the one to kill Joker. Damian rubbed his arm and swallowed thickly.

"He didn't harm me...Danny didn't give him the chance," Damian said and Bruce paused, his brows furrowing in that way that demanded a further explanation. Damian sighed through his nose," Danny has explained to me that ghosts form bonds just like we do, but it's something a little deeper...he is able to feel my emotions....and when I am in danger," he explained.

"So he killed the Joker...to save you," Bruce said and Damian nodded, the billionaire ran a hand through his hair," Constantine said this would happen," he said to himself and Damian scowled at the mention of the occultist. The billionaire caught his look and sighed," when I held a meeting at the watchtower I explained you and Danny's relationship, Constantine warned me that if anything threatened you we wouldn't be able to make enough coffins," he said in a false sense of calm.

"Father, he was extremely distressed that he killed Joker. He was terrified that people would ignore the Justice League and continue siding with the GIW," Damian said, curling his hands into his fists at his sides. The former assassin sighed," I promised him that everything would be fine," he said and Bruce nodded.

"It's relieving to know that he didn't want to kill, just make sure he's okay, and stay close to him," Bruce said and Damian nodded, turning and walking out of his father's study.

"Breaking News, Joker announced was dead this morning by GCPD after a severed arm was found in the old funhouse near Gotham Harbor. Police speculate that he was attacked by an animal of unknown origin, at this time we haven't been able to take a statement from any of his men. Stay tuned for more," the news reporter said before it switched to the weather.

Danny felt sick to his stomach as he listened to the news reporter, everyone was talking about Joker's death and he just wished it would stop. Every time he heard someone talking about it, it made him feel worse because he was the one responsible. It was getting harder to control his ghostly instincts, he wanted to coil around Damian and never let him leave the manor again.

"Hello" a quiet voice said from beside him and Danny nearly shrieked, turning to see a girl with tan skin and short black hair, she was wearing a deep blue sweatshirt and leggings. He gulped and waved at her hesitantly, she plopped herself down next to him," Cass," she said, pointing to herself.

"Danny, are you one of Damian's siblings?" he asked and Cass nodded with a small smile," it's nice to meet you, I haven't really seen any of his other siblings yet besides Jason, dick, and now you," he said. The two spent the next couple of hours on the couch together until Damian came in and swept Danny away to their shared room to spend some time by themselves before dinner.
