Chapter 1: Final Week in the Good ol' US of A
Chapter Text
It was first period and the last Monday of freshman year. I, like the sentimental person I was, could be found on the top floor near the corner staircase, shaking my friends violently by the shoulders and fake sobbing for effect.
"IF WE DON'T ACTUALLY HANG OUT THIS SUMMER I WILL BREAK INTO YOUR HOUSES AND BRING YOU HOME WITH ME!!" I said jokingly, obviously.
My friends lia, Ari, and Yashi laughed, surrendering and agreeing to all make an effort to hang.
"It would be great if we invite some of the others too!" Lia said with the soft smile she always wore when speaking.
"Oh yeah! That'd be fun! The more the merrier." Yashi added. Motherly as always
Ari nodded as she put her grandma starter pack and or personal project along with her yarn and crochet needle into her funnily enough previous crochet project, her handmade tote bag.
With the agreement stated, we began listing things to do till the warning bell.
With Ari and Lia departing for their shared science class, Yashi scurries her way to math. I moseyed on to the second floor of our small high school and went to my study Hall I shared with two good friends of mine, Daniel and Cameron.
Walking in, I saw them in the back corner of the classroom near the windows Cameron and Daniel were talking about the newest Fortnite update. Walking over I put my backpack on the floor near my desk and sat down on my seat.
"You guys talking about Fortnite? I'm actually excited. I begged my dad for both the Miku bundles, and he said yes, surprisingly. But I'm really missing the Olympus map, and the skins, of course. I never got any of them. It was my favorite, aside from the Peter Griffin update that one time. His map and his skin will be missed." I said dramatically
"Yup, we are hoping to play more on VC during the summer. You gonna join?" Daniel confirmed
"Probably I've got a packed schedule with my friends from Discord and the others. VC, Mall, VC, Hike, Meet Up, more mall, VC, beach. Either way, I am getting better at not test shooting my guns!!"
Cameron gave me a knowing look "Really? Are you though?"
I nodded, "Yes!! I am! Trust okay!" Cameron mmh'd "Liess. I'll believe it when I see it."
"You will! Just you wait! How about Friday after school?"
"I'm down."
"Yeah." Daniel and Cameron replied
The day went on as is. The only thing that was different was me running around the building and getting all my teachers and friends signatures from the School Psychologist to all the lunch ladies who gave me free chocolate froyo and cookies.
Getting off the bus and reaching my front door, I entered my house. The first thing I saw was my sister running up, taking hold of my shoulders, holding on tightly, a death grip.
"ELYSE! ELYSE! WE'RE MOVING TO JAPAN!"
What.
WHAT?!
I was stunned. Excited? All my friends plans, out the window. poofed out of existence. Just like that. But Japan? Both my sister and I yearned to go there. For the culture, the sights, the temples...the Manga and Anime, collectibles! But this HAD to be a lie.
"Wait, seriously??? You're Joking." I said, getting out of her grip and walking to our shared bedroom. I just couldn't believe it. It was too good to be true.
"Yes! Go downstairs, Mom and Dad are on the phone with Ann-Emilien and the rest of the main family!" Arianna blabbered as I set my stuff on the floor near my desk under my loft bed.
"You know how our French family legacy is rich? Like royalty rich?" Arianna beamed. This got me to believe her just a bit. She and I hated the French. Well, at least our family. The adults, that is. SOME of our French cousins are cool too, but most aren't anyway. Just a bunch of old-money snobby spoiled kids because they get the fortunes and we don't. Secretly shunned by the family since my dad married a Mexican Immigrant in America. My mom. The woman who fought her way into his family and gained full trust from his father and half-brother. Even my aunts' ex-husband favored her more than anyone else in the family. But everyone else just seemed to tolerate her. Not truly accept her. It made me sick. So if my sister is happy about something involving them, it had to mean they were surrendering. Surrendering something big.
"Yes. Why?" I replied, thinking about what they were discussing downstairs
"They are returning our rightful titles. Our houses! The other properties! Chateaus! Even the one that bitch who married our uncle stole! The Money! The antiques!.. It's all ours!" Arianna's smile was ear to ear.
"They wouldn't." I was in disarray. They just wouldn't. So why?? I needed to calm down. Think.
"They wouldn't. Especially after Bon-Papa's (Grandpa’s) death. In fact, they'd take from us. All the antiques we care for here." It was now impossible to believe.
"But they never even read his will to us. Dad realized and pointed it out when he was in a call, catching up with Ann-Emilien. He got Ann-Emilien to read it with Alexander's influence. Apparently, Bon-Papa wanted to give all the luxuries to his first son! And that's Dad! The only thing being distributed was his net worth. Dad getting the bigger portion, Anne getting the second biggest, and Alexander getting the smallest." Arianna said
"For real...? Can we listen in? I need proof." Arianna nodded, and we headed to the basement. Dad's office door was closed, but thankfully not soundproof. We could hear every word. They confirmed the move to Japan, the money already being transferred and used.
40 minutes passed, and the call finally ended. We hurried upstairs into our room and acted as if we never left. Arianna was opening Zenless Zone Zero, and I was turning on my computer to catch up on an anime.
We heard footsteps. Two loud voices followed. Mom and Dad.
"Girls, come to the Living Room. We need to speak to you about something. It's very Important." My mom said sitting down with Dad on one of the chairs from Grandma's old house that we use. Arianna and I enter the living room and sit on the couch. Dad opened his mouth to speak.
"As you know, Bon Papa passed away a few weeks ago. Well, Ann-Emilien never read his will out to us..."
As he continued speaking, confirming what we already kne,w He began talking about what would happen from now on.
"Now that we have everything rightfully repossessioned. What are we going to be doing now? Well, mom and I have thought about it and had just gotten news that the Chateau they were building in Japan finished only a month ago and... We decided that we should move there. Now I know this move will be hard. With Arianna in college in New York City and you, Elyse, wanting to finish high school here. We have enough funds to hopefully fix those roadblocks. Tomorrow, your Mom and I are going to the bank to pay off the rest of this house's payments. So that will only leave maintenance bills, usage, and ownership payments. Taking the mortgage out of the picture. That way, Arianna can still live here and still commute to school in the city. Coming to Japan for the holidays. As for Elyse, we have found a really great school to finish your high school years. So, although you won't finish your high school career here, the school is open to you taking courses digitally at the same time you attend the other school in Japan. And my apologies if this was short notice, but we have about 6 weeks to pack our belongings. We are keeping a good amount of furniture here since we wouldn't want Arianna to live in an unfurnished house. And just because we are now living in Japan doesn't mean this house isn't our home. For visits, we can always fly back."
So this was all real. We are moving to Japan. And I still couldn't wrap my mind around it.
Throughout the final week, I informed my friends of the bad/good news. Sad that I was leaving but happy I can come back anytime I want, and now I can even make my promise to my friends that they'll visit all the family chateaus real. My family decided to host a big and a small moving party after school was out for the summer. One was professional with a dress code, dancing, songs, and cake. almost like a prom. And the other one was personal and at our house, a barbecue.
I told my friends that this move won't make me not stay true to our promises to hang out, but it will be hard sometimes to see each other face to face, as well as online at times, due to the different time zones. The only time I can hang out frequently is on Discord, but some of my friends unfortunately didn't have it.
And with that, the final week at school came to a close.

Currently trying to post what I already have but it is getting late and I wanna improve my sleep schedule
Chapter Text
The 6 weeks came by fast. Parties, farewell gifts from friends and neighbors, packing, and very little time to play games. But we all made it work. Going to the mall for the last few times with my sister and our friends, or our own private group of friends. Bowling, Karaoke, and arcade games. It was bittersweet. But here I am, 1 hour early for our flight to Japan. The French family had private planes move our belongings to the house already, so the only things missing were us and what we carried in our suitcases and backs.
We landed. After a grueling 14 and a half hours spent doom-scrolling movies, playing game pigeon, other mobile games, and listening to music on the beloved yet underrated YouTube Music. Our parents slept through most of the flight, but me and Arianna found a way to stay busy. We regret it now. We were finally on Japanese soil. Unlike the process to board the plane, leaving the airport was much easier. Heading outside with our luggage and dog Obi.
We spotted Ann-Emilien and one of our uncles near a limo. A bit much in my opinion. Just because you're rich doesn't mean having a limo is necessary. Then again, I did want a Hearse... and renovate the back to be somewhat like a limo but better. So it wasn't my place to talk. Loading in the trunk, we all got into the car and our uncle drove to our estate in Bunkyo, Japan, only 28 minutes from Tokyo, where we landed.
Looking out the window, just by a glance, anyone can tell this is where high society lives. It was kind of intimidating, I mean, I'm going to be going to school with a bunch of nepo babies. No offense, of course, other than my family and close rich friends, I have nothing else to compare. I haven't even met these people yet.
Arriving to the estate we gazed at our French style chateau surrounded by Mexican architectural buildings as well as Japanese. So I give the family some praise for including my mother's family's heritage as well as the country where the home was built. It's respectful. There was an 8 almost 9-foot-tall stone wall surrounding the perimeter of the estate. The front is decorated with a Gothic-style tall gate, a passcode needed in order to get in. The chateau itself was humongous, even without the four garages. Walking into our house staff greeted us at the door. I smiled. My mom wouldn't have to slave away cleaning the house anymore, but knowing her, she'd find an excuse anyway, no matter who and how many people are helping, because she liked staying busy. We all introduced ourselves. We even later found out that the land was big enough for extra housing if any of our employees needed help in that front.
Ann-Emilien gave us a tour. The interior and exterior of the house was enormous. In the entrance, nothing was open concept, all old-timey. The first floor was the foyer, standard but elegant, next room had a conversation pit with a coffee table in the middle, the living room was decorated with a huge fireplace in the front and a wide TV, and a huge library somewhat filled. Next was the Kitchen, newest equipment and a pleasing room by its decor, and finally the formal dining room, a long table with an old French sheet on top. In the corner, a door led to the patio outside. overlooking a garden, a trail to the rest of the backyard, playground, swimming pool, and things that were too far out to see just yet. The second floor had 2 play rooms and 6 guest bedrooms, all with well-sized bathrooms. The third floor had 3 bedrooms and 4 studies. 1 bedroom was for my parents, the other 2 were for me and my sister. All bedrooms had private bathrooms, walk-in closets, and mine even had a reading nook. Every single one of us had our own studies. The Fourth floor was the gallery, and 5th floor was another floor for guests. Then the attic for storage. Going down to the basement, we had 6 rooms, an indoor pool with male and female separated bathrooms, a pool table and a Ping-Pong table with darts in their own room, the bar, the arcade room, the theater room, the storage room, and the gym. Heading outside, we went deeper into the property grounds. we had several gardens, 4 green houses, 2 tennis courts a pretty decent sized golf course, open field, huge outdoor pool with changing rooms separated by gender that had showers and a bathroom with 4 stalls and 4 sinks, and a very sizable pond with aquatic life and birds with a pavilion and bridge."
This place was HUGEE.
With that, the day came to a close. We saw our family off after they handed us all the documents regarding the house and 6 keys. We decided to spend the rest of our time before collapsing from jet lag to get familiar with the staff. I mean, they are living with us, so we have to know them on a personal family level. We liked the fact that we have extra help around the house, but no one should be deemed a servant.
Next thing on the agenda, 2 weeks to unpack and get familiar with our new home. After that, I get enrolled in Ouran formally. I really miss home.
Chapter 3: I AM NOT CUT OUT FOR THIS SCHOOL
Chapter Text
After finally moving in fully and getting somewhat familiar with my county..town...city??? Aghh I don't know! I'm an American, for God's sake! This will have to take more time getting used to.
Anyway, today was the day I was to go to Ouran for proper enrollment. Meeting the Chairman, getting a tour, my schedule, and... my dress. I really don't want to wear a uniform. If it's pretty, okay fine, I'll wear it. But if not, I'm not joking when I say I'll get on my knees and BEG not to wear it if I have to.
Waking up to my alarm at an outrageous hour for summer only because I like the extra free time, 5 am having 2 hours to get ready I freshened up and got dressed, just some casual wear, band tee with a ripped off shoulder collar and some nice high waist pants that flare slightly at the bottom. Nothing too special.
Heading downstairs, Mom was making eggs. One for her and one for me because the other two were still sound asleep.
"Morning, Mommy!" I said, running to her, hugging her from behind.
"Morning, Mi hita."
I broke my hug and set the breakfast table for us. Mom put the hot and ready eggs on our plates. We finished shortly. Thanking her, I got my mini bag and water, going outside, I turned on the car, and went to the passenger seat as my mom got her bag, water, and wallet.
25 minutes later, we finally arrived. After parking, we saw a man standing at the entrance. Tall, nicely aged, some would say like fine wine, but he looks like he was about my dad's age or somewhere near the early and late 50s. Fine wine to me would be 60 or 70, yknow? Like a silver fox kinda deal.
My inner rant came to an abrupt stop as my mom and I walked to him. My mom and I shook his hands, introducing ourselves in Japanese for better practice.
"Good morning, Sir. My name is Elyse de (LAST NAME). Thank you for allowing me to attend your school."
Surprised by my above-average Japanese, he replied.
"You speak Japanese?" He asked, his smile showed surprise
"A good amount," I said politely
"You sound great! a bit more practice and help, you'll be speaking like a native in no time!"
"Haha! Thank you! Everyone in my family has been trying their best learning the language!"
We then switched to English
"How many languages does your family speak?"
"English is the most frequently used language in our house. My Dad speaks French, Spanish, and English fluently. My Mom speaks Spanish and English fluently but with a bit of an accent sometimes. She speaks French well, and with Japanese, she tries her best. My sister and I speak English, French, and Spanish fluently. We are pretty good with Japanese, though."
We continued our conversation on the way to his office. When we finally reached it, Chairman Suoh suggested I explore some of the campus as they finish the paper, and will call me back for uniform fitting and course selection.
Exploring the campus, I realized how huge it was. In a matter of minutes, I found the music wing. I always loved music and was even in my town's and my high school's Chamber Choir. Every year, I considered joining the spring musical but always chickened out. But I did a solo in the cabaret! I did cry after it, though. I remember when I finished and went to the back of the stage, I speed walked to the choir room and cried. Later, heading back to the PAC(auditorium), I went to Yashi and cried even more, silently, of course, rambling about my mistakes.
I continued my voyage throughout the music wing. and began hearing multiple faint voices. Afraid I might alert them with my footsteps, I slowly walked back to the main office.
I was turning a corner. My eyes glued to my phone since I was watching Cookie Run Kingdom TikToks due to the release of a new character.
And BAM!
I knocked into someone.
Hand on my throbbing head, I open my eyes and look ahead of me.
"HARUHI??" I yelled. Shocked to see her so suddenly.
"ELYSE???" Haruhi looked back at me with the same amount of surprise.
Astonished, we both pulled ourselves to each other, embracing one another.
"I THOUGHT I'D NEVER HEAR FROM YOU AGAIN!" I said
"ME TOO! A FEW YEARS AFTER MOM DIED, DAD GOT TOO BUSY TO SEND MY LETTERS!" Haruhi said, holding me tighter.
"WHAT??? YOUR MOM DIED??? HOW? I'm SORRY FOR YOUR LOSS, THOUGH! although I'm so relieved! I thought something bad happened to all of you guys! I was crying for weeks!" I said, burying my head in the crook of her neck, breathing in my friend's scent as to make sure I never lose it again.
"You cut your hair. Looks cute! But you should have gone for a messy pixie cut! But you'd look good with anything, honestly." I said, changing the subject and wanting to catch up.
Haruhi chuckled. God, I missed her so much. It was just yesterday she, her mom, and her dad lived in America for a year. Going to my school. Sharing Karate classes. She was my best friend. And she still is, whether we can communicate or not. If we were in different parts of the world.
"My mom got really sick, and thank you! So what are you doing in Japan anyway? The whole family here too?" Haruhi asked, pulling us out of the embrace with our hands still glued to each other's arms.
"Oh! Well, y'know the French family? They gave us all of the fortunes! Money, titles, estates, you name it! And recently, a commissioned Chateau in Japan just finished a few months ago! So our parents thought we could live here instead of France to widen our horizons. More experiences, opportunities, all that jazz. My mom and I are here to finish up Enrollment. " I said, pausing.
"wait.. Do you go here!!!!" I beamed at the likely possibility, I mean, she was already so smart last time I saw her in an educational setting. I knew her Brains would take her far. Plus, why would she be here if she wasn’t?
Haruhi did her signature chuckle
"Yes, I go here. I won a scholarship for my entrance exam scores. Full ride! Been here for a few months now! since April!"
"I'm so proud of you!! And I'm so happy we get to go to the same school once again!" I sighed, then realized. School year systems are different here from America. The school year starts in April and ends in March of next year. So in reality, I have 1 week of Summer break left. Setting aside the sad news, I reply.
"I really missed it. The whole gang did and still does, we all wonder how you are doing on a regular basis." I said, bringing up our friends.
"The others, how are they?" Haruhi said with a slightly sad expression
"They are good! Ever since everyone got a phone, we use Discord to talk! other platforms too, but Discord is our main. We have a channel called Haruhi's Shrine, too! Even if you left the country, you never left the friend group! We even tell the newest members of the group about you! All of them wanna meet you someday. Maybe now it's possible."
Haruhi looked at me in a dazed wonder
"Wow. That's so thoughtful of you guys, really. And yeah, maybe it is Possible now! It'd be nice to see familiar and new faces!"
I sighed with a smile
"Good thing we share an online calendar. Things would get even more hectic if not."
"Oh, speaking of online... I have a phone!!" Haruhi pulled out a phone. It might have been an old model, but it was in pristine condition.
"Really?!?! Wait! Now I can add your number, and you can download Discord to reconnect with the others!!" I took out my phone and went to contacts
"Good idea!" Haruhi followed suit, and we exchanged numbers. After that, I helped her download and create her Discord account.
"Once I get home, I'll send you the invite, kay? I gotta go and get fitted for that ugly uniform. I'm planning on begging not to wear it." I said with a smile, knowing this time the goodbye isn't for long.
"Haha! The Chairman is a considerate man. Just ask and give him a reason in a nice way. I'm sure he'll allow it."
"I hope you're right, Haruhi! Text you later!!" I said, hugging her, before heading to the Chairman's office.
Haruhi hugged back, and after a few good seconds, we broke free. "See you!" She replied, waking off to music room 3.
Chapter Text
I entered the office shortly after my bump-in with Haruhi and immediately saw the hideous eyesore of a dress. Diverting my gaze, I turned to my mom and the Chairman.
"Paperwork all done?" I asked ready to go home at this point
My mom replied with a smile, "Yup, now it's just your fitting! The dress looks beautiful!"
"yeahhhh suree," I said sarcastically. I was still going to try it on to please my mom, but I'm 100% going to voice my utter hatred for the mistake of what fashionably blind people would call a dress. It's not a dress, it's an abomination.
I go into the connected bathroom to try it on with the help of my mom. I was allergic to Polyester and cotton, but not so much that I'd die from it, so I still wear clothes made from those fabrics because walking around in silk or lace during the day is crazy to me. Silk and lace should only be worn a certain way in public, and it should be used for certain party dresses, but it's mainly important to wear to bed. Still, the fact that I'm wearing this dress makes me wish it killed me.
Getting out of the bathroom, I modeled the dress for a few minutes and popped the question.
"Chairman Suoh? Is it absolutely necessary to wear the uniform?" I said as politely as possible.
"Well, yes, but we can make exceptions.. For instance, if a student can't afford it. Why?" Chairman Suoh questioned
"It's just that the dress isn't quite flattering in my opinion. Also, the puffiness is unnecessary in my eyes. Sitting down would be uncomfortable it makes you easier to be pushed by accident in the halls or shoved. Plus, yellow isn't a very pleasing color to look at. It's too bright or too murky. Doesn't go well with the blue uniform for the boys." I said, accidentally sounding like a critic.
Catching myself, I apologized.
"Oh, shoot, sorry! I sounded rude! Uhh.. I'm sorry, it's a good dres,s but not practical, you know... Um, is it okay if I am an exception to maybe not wear the uniform..? Your choice, of course." I asked awkwardly yet politely.
Yuzuru Suoh, a bit taken aback, held his composer. "Hmm, I mean, I suppose. If it is a distraction to your studies. And you don't wear anything too wild and inappropriate, but I assume you already know that."
I smiled and looked to my mom for the okay.
"Fine." Estela decreed in an I don't care anymore manner.
"Thank you!!!" I was relieved I didn't have to wear that waste of decent fabric
After some banter, was course selection. Course selection here is different from American public schools. Since it was for rich kids who had a path pre-paved for them, there weren’t many sports or class elective selections. I got my core classes and then chose electives. Greek mythology class, Advanced Psychology, music theory, and history. Leaving me a lunch period as the 7th elective. With that, we said our goodbyes.
"Finally!!! We can go home!" Elyse said as she got in the passenger seat.
Notes:
I know this chapter was short but the next one will be really long!!! Just trying to work out where I should end the next chapter!
Chapter Text
The 2 weeks flew by. I spent most of my time in calls with friends and my sister, as well as annoying my dog. I became great friends with the staff who were around my age!! My main friends in our estate are Michael, a 19-year-old boy from Belarus who has been working for the family since he was 8, Josephine, also known as Josie who moved to Japan with us not long after she was hired just 2 months ago, she is 14, and Cassius, He was born in the Netherlands and his parents found work under my family when he was 5. Michael was going to the University of Tokyo and both Josie and Cassius attend Ouran Public High School as first years.
I woke up groggy from my late-night call with friends. We played Roblox, Fortnite, and even had a Lethal Company marathon. Groaning, I got out of bed and began getting ready for the day.
After freshening up, I picked an outfit, deciding to rep my old school, I wore my Varsity Swim Team hoodie over one of my other band t-shirts. It was a Malevolent Creation 2003 tour Tee and some stylish ripped jeans. I had my Invader Zim socks on and my dirty Converse. I did my makeup quickly and ran down the stairs to the kitchen. Making myself a Sunnyside up with toast and avocado spread, I ate my food quickly and filled up my half-gallon water bottle and thermal cup. After brushing my teeth, I grabbed my bag and ran to the main car garage. One of our drivers waited for me.
"Which car would you like to take, princess?" Said Mr. Dubois, He was a middle-aged Escort working for us. He had a wonderful family living just 10 minutes from here. He and his wife currently have 3 kids! his youngest just entered preschool. They are from the Netherlands like Michael.
"I told you no formalities! Just Elyse." The title is old and outdated. It's irrelevant when you think about it. Being pure royalty, 'downgrading' to the highest nobility due to the passage of time. There is no purpose for the title. You just have it.
Dubois nodded with a smile.
"So, which car would you like for me to drive you to school this fine morning Elyse?"
"The Hearse!!!!" I said, beaming with a smile. I've always loved Hearses, and apparently Bon Papa was holding onto one for me before he passed. It was a 1970s Cadillac hearse with the windows and black curtains. With a crown as a hood accessory. Bon Papa had the interior modified to imitate the interior of a limo, leaving space for a sizable trunk.
We got in the hearse and jammed to Musical songs because it just felt right, and it's honestly a great way to start one's day. I remember those times my sister drove me to school because I missed the bus, and we're blasting Frozen, Hadestown, Descendants, Wicked, Miku, FNAF songs, and Minecraft parodies. All that stuff, but Arianna isn't driving me, so my selection had to be more tame, unfortunately.
We made it to the school. Exiting the vehicle, I collected my belongings and said bye to Mr. Dubois. Sighing, I made my way to the front entrance.
As I walked up the stairs to the main entrance, I took in my surroundings and the people looking for Haruhi as my saving grace. I saw her a few steps ahead and ran to her, clinging to her arm, I said excitedly. "Haruhi!!!"
"Elyse!!" Haruhi said with a smile, not minding my intrusion of her personal space.
"Looks like you got out of wearing the uniform. Good for you! And thanks for the invite to the server, by the way, I'm getting more familiar with Discord! Everyone was so happy I joined! They joined the call and told me to join it too. They were all crying. It was great to catch up with everybody and meet the new friends you guys made!"
"Told you! Sooo, can you help me?" I said, desperately trying to keep her by my side throughout the day.
"With what?" Haruhi said always open to helping out a friend.
"I know I had a tour of the campus already, but this damn school is wayyyy too big. Help me find my classes?" I plead.
"Sure, send them to me so I can have it on my phone and find you easily after classes." Harhi said as we reached the top of the stairs
I opened my phone and sent her my schedule quickly.
"Done! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!" I said repeatedly as I swung our arms after moving my grasp to instead of holding her whole arm, I only held her hand.
First up was math, Pre-Calc to be exact, which was also home room. As we rounded the corner to the hallway of my classroom, I felt multiple eyes on me. Nevertheless, I ignored it and continued to catch up with Haruhi. Apparently, she has been working for a club full of boys called the Host Club because she broke a vase not so long ago and had to pretend that she was a boy to the whole school. Poor thing isn't she?
"I have no problem referring to you as a guy when there are people we don't know around. I'm just worried I'll slip up." I said, determined not to ruin her status she had already built here before I came into the picture.
"I don't really care what you call me. It's Tamaki and more so Kyoya who want my gender identity under wraps because of what the guests might think. Tamaki says it's because I can stay the club's “secret princess” and his “little girl” And in Kyoyas case, he only cares because of how much money I bring in the club's finances. Also because he finds joy in every tiny mistake I commit and adds to my debt as punishmen,t" Haruhi said as we stopped walking now at the door to my classroom
"Ah, I see. Well, thank you for escorting me!! I literally don't know what I'd do if you weren't here with me. See you after class!!" I gave her a huge, tight hug before she set out to her own class. I stood at the door on my phone as students walked past me into the classroom. I was waiting for the teacher because I didn't want to accidentally sit in a seat that was already assigned without my knowledge.
It didn't take long for the teacher to arrive.
"You're the new student?" They said needing confirmation
"Yes, I am Elyse de [LAST NAME]. Pleasure to meet you." I said with a smile, reaching out my hand to welcome a handshake.
The teacher smiled and shook my hand
"It's a pleasure to meet you, too. So I'm going to go into the room, do a morning introduction, and before I start the class, I'll introduce you, and you can come in, say your name, a few tiny things about yourself, then I'll tell you where to sit. Sounds good?"
"Sounds good, and thank you." I nod
"No problem." The teacher went inside and I waited for my queue to be introduced.
"--- Now, before I start our class, I'd like to announce that we have a new student. You may come in." The teacher gestured to me at the door.
I walked through the doors to my classroom and stood in the front
"Hello everyone, my name is de [LAST NAME] Elyse. I moved here from America. My father is French, and my mother is Mexican. I spend my free time reading or playing video games. I'm so glad I have gotten such a wonderful opportunity and attend school here with everybody. Thank you for having me." I bowed to my peers after I introduced myself in my best Japanese.
"Thank you for that, Elyse. Now, can you please take your seat to the left of our Class Representative, Ootori Kyoya? He is the person you can go to if you have any questions regarding homework, school, or anything else." The teacher pointed to a tall boy with jet black hair and glasses who stood up from his seat.
I nodded and scurried to my seat. And with that class started. Throughout the period, I stared at my surroundings. The posters scattered on the walls that held source material for the class, the clean green chalkboard, hardly ever used due to the smart board's superiority, the number of open windows, and those that were closed. Moving on, I looked at my classmates. All looking forward or either zoning out not paying attention to the teachers preaching. Two stuck out to me, the blonde tall boy that sat on the other side of the class rep, and the class rep himself. When I was up in the front, the bright blonde-haired boy had a huge smile on his face. No idea why, of course, but I mean props to him being merry on such a drag of a day already I mean its 1st period math and woohoo for me because Japan does math differently from America, so I’m going to have to probably relearn math as a whole. Anyway, the boy had a European look to him that screamed French. Maybe it was just me, but I can guess someone's ethnicity or nationality in a blink, it's like when you smell the air and you know its going to rain soon. Weird correlation, but it's true.
Moving on to the Class Rep, he was razor-focused on the lesson. His eyes were looking straight forward, and his posture perfect. He had his hands on his desk in a way you'd imagine a CEO. His elbows flared out, and his hands met by intertwined fingers. His uniform held not even one speck of dirt, glasses were crystal clear, and his hair pristine. With the rest of my time in class, I stared out the window, enjoying the view of the garden and seeing birds play together.
Class ended, and I began collecting my things. I noticed a set of eyes hold a burning glare into my back. I was rushing to wait outside for Haruhi till I heard a voice.
"No, Tamaki. Go and walk to our next class. I'll catch up." A boy behind me said to one of his peers, who I'm guessing was his friend. The other boy whined and gave up, leaving the room.
Feeling the gaze leave, I relaxed. My relaxation was not even 4 seconds long when I heard a voice again.
"Miss de [LAST NAME] was it?" the same voice rang out.
I turned round and saw the Class Rep.
"Yes?" I said, wondering what he needed. I don't know if Haruhi was waiting for me, and I didn't want to be the reason she was late to class.
"Welcome to Ouran, I do hope you are liking it so far. I'm the Class Rep Ootori Kyoy,a but you already know that." He said, walking to the door, signaling for me to walk with him. Giving up on cutting our talk short, I walked over to him with my belongings in hand, hoping that Haruhi just heads to class.
As we walked down the hallway and he held out his hand for my phone to see my schedule. I gave it to him, ever silent, not knowing exactly why he wanted me to walk with him. There was a good few seconds of uncomfortable silence till he spoke.
"We have the same core classes, different electives. You have one elective, which is swimming… The rest are all study halls back to back. How interesting. Well, as your Class Rep, I will make it my duty to walk you to your classes. Next week, you're on your own." He said while fixing his glasses with one hand and handing my phone back to me after adding his number and sending himself my schedule with the other.
I thanked him with a smile. As we continued our walk down the hall.
"So are you here on scholarship?" Kyoya asked his interest peaking at her background for the possibility that she was a heiress of important figures.
"No. I'm able to go here because my family reclaimed rightful ownership to our riches." I explained simply. There wasnt much to it aferall
"Riches? What kind of riches? What do your parents do for a living?" Kyoya inquired further
"My mom is a nurse's assistant and my dad is a banker. The riches are just from my family legacy. I'm from a Noble French family. But of course, with the reclaiming of our luxuries, we reclaim ownership of companies we founded, like L'Oréal, which we co-founded. And now my mom can open her own flower business, so my sister and I can run it. We also own a modeling agency. My aunt and Grandma were models."
"Oh? How interesting.. Your parents must be busy now that they have to run so many things. How is adjusting to your new life with your newfound riches?" Kyoya said. He had a kind of calculated glint in his eye. I don't know what that's about, so I brush it off.
We near our classroom and I tug his arm for him to look at me. I wanted to thank him. He took time out of his day to walk me to class, and he was going to continue doing so the whole week. He could have spent the passing period walking with friends or talking to teachers, but he decided to help me find my way.
He turns and looks down to me.
"Ootori, thank you for walking with me today and all the other times in the future. You're too kind." I smile sweetly, looking up at him
I saw the corner of his lips lift.
"It's my pleasure. I found our conversation quite insightful. I would love to have more with you." He said in a calm demeanor. His voice sounded very nice to me, but that wasn't very important. I smile once again and with that we walk into the classroom, finding the blondie waiting for us and or Ootori impatiently. He got up from his seat and walked to us in a dramatic manner.
"Kyoya! What took you so long!! And how dare you!! I wished to speak with the fair maiden first!" The blonde boy said, ‘scolding' his friend. The blonde then turned to me, his pouty facial expression turned into a big, wide smile. He was practically radiating sunshine and glitter, it almost hurt my eyes.
"MY FAIR MAIDEN." He spoke loudly and theatrically, making me jump. He took my hands in his and knelt to the floor.
"It is an honor to be in your presence and to finally introduce myself to you, princess." He pressed our hands to his forehead as he spoke, then kissed the back of my hands.
"My name is Suoh Tamaki!" He then pulled me into a hug, smothering me.
"OH HOW NICE IT IS TO HAVE A FELLOW FRENCH PERSON HERE!" he said, shaking me around.
"I was getting quite lonely, you know!" He pouted at me. After a few good, long seconds passed, he finally let go of me. I smiled and laughed lightly.
"Haha!! It's a pleasure to meet you, Suoh! So you and Ootori are friends?"
"Better yet, Mon Ami! Not only are we friends! We are........ HOSTS OF THE HOST CLUB!! It's a club where high-society maidens get catered to by us! High society men! We founded it! The club hours are after school and an hour long!!" He exclaimed with high intensity and excitement, raising his voice and lowering it, making full-on poses each sentence. Just then, the teacher walks in.
The day went on, I spent my time bonding with Suoh and Ootori, eventually making it to first-name basis with the blondie. Core courses ended, and the school lunch was 1000 times better than America's. It was like actual gourmet meals and REAL food at that.
The day went on, and I had my electives. I was heading to the host club with Kyoya afterwards, and I began getting more comfortable with him, talking about interests like games and childhood shows. And maybe I was getting a bit too comfortable. As I began going off about my favorite animes and why they were so good. I was currently yapping about Angels of Death till we finally reached the music room 3.
Big light pink doors stood in front of us as Kyoya walked over to open them. As soon as he did, roses flew out. And a whole new world appeared. It seemed as if the room was a time capsule. The room was filled with Hellenistic Greek architecture. I was brought out of my thoughts when Tamaki's voice came out of nowhere.
“Mommyyy, you're late!! That's a first!” Tamaki jumped out of nowhere. He wore an ancient Greek toga made for the king of the Gods himself. He pouted before he continued. “Well, your outfit is in the closet, so go and change soon! Doors open in 20 minutes!”
Kyoya pulled put his glasses with his finger. “Very well.” Kyoya turned to face me, “I’ll be out soon, I think you can handle them while I'm gone.”
With that, I stood around trying to remember why I even came here. Was I really just here to watch them make girls swoon over their antics? And why did Tamaki call Kyoya mommy? Meh, it's better than trying to decipher the homework I was given. Tamaki's attention turned to me.
“Ah! Elyse! Don't just stand there and look pretty! I made sure the twins included you in the club's rendezvous today! Even though it was very last minute, they have your outfit ready for you in the changing room!” Tamaki said proudly
Huh? Why am I getting an outfit I'm not even in the club? Oh well. And twins? Who are they?
“Twins?” I said confused.
Tamaki gasped, “Oh dear!! I haven't introduced you to everyone! EVERYONE!!!” Tamaki loudly caught the others' attention.
“Boss, you don't have to yell, you know,” one orange-haired boy said.
“Yeah, everything is already set up, no need to yell,” another orange-haired boy said after revealing himself from behind the other. Both boys looked identical. They were likely the twins Tamaki was talking about.
Two others approached. One, a short blonde-haired boy, his eyes wide as he looked at me. In his arms, he held a pink bunny. He sat atop the other boy's shoulders. The second boy was tall and toned. He had well-kept short spikey hair and held a stoic expression on his face.
“What's going on, Tama-Chan?” The small boy asked. The stoic male remained silent.
“Honey, everyone! I'd like to introduce you to someone! This lovely lady here is Haruhi's childhood friend from America! She is a 2nd year like me and Kyoya! We share the same homeroom!” Tamaki said with a big smile.
“Hello, everyone! My name is de (LAST NAME) Elyse! It's a pleasure to meet you!” I said politely, happy to meet new faces, but a bit overwhelmed.
Everyone told me their names.
“So are you a guest or do you just want to observe the club?” Kaoru asks
“Uh, I think observing for now is fine if that's alright with you guys.” Just then, Kyoya emerged wearing his outfit. I turned to face him as he came toward us. I look at his exposed skin for just a second and then shift my attention to the outfit's detailing. He wore a laurel leaf crown and ancient Greek battle armor, the fake but convincing gold glistened in the light from the window seeping into the big music room, oh so beautifully.
“Elyse can sit with me. I have no guests today because I will be checking our budget and seeing what we can do for future events and themes. Also, restock and look at our club's merch sale,” Kyoya said, going to my side.
I look up, a confused expression etched onto my face. “You guys have merch? What do you even sell?”
“We sell a multitude of things, individual picture magazines, pairing picture magazines, posters, and calendars, with the club members in each month, signed Image prints. Would you like me to show you? If you just want to sit and watch, the club might as well take a peek at our products and management. A friend of Haruhi is a friend of ours.”
I smile lightly and nod. Kyoya then took me to a table near the big window.
“You can put your stuff down here. Tamaki informed you about your costume. You don't have to wear it, but I feel like the club and its guests would appreciate it. Especially Tamaki, he was the only halfer in the friend group till you arrived. Just by a glimpse, anyone can tell he has been more chipper than he usually is since first period.” Kyoya said as he took out his laptop and a black clipboard
“Awe really! I'm glad that he isn't like the French people I know. They're horrible people. But Tamaki, he's sweet! He has a bright personality. And sure, I'll wear the costume! Where is the changing room exactly?” I said as I looked around. Kyoya then pointed to a door and I thanked him.
I walk into the changing room and see my costume. It was beautiful!! But quite revealing. Then again, I don't mind showing cleavage or curves. I put on my outfit and look at the mirror. Walking out, I spotted Haruhi.
“Haruhi!!!” I smile, running up to her hugging her tightly.
“Ah, Elyse! Why are you at the club?” Haruhi said, a bit confused.
“Tamaki offered me to come! And Ootori walked me to all of my classes today. He also led me to the club room afterwards! Today I just plan to sit and watch." I said with a smile.
“Oh? Well, that's good! You'll finally see what they put me through.” Haruhi sighed for effect.
“Do you have a costume? I feel like it gives away your gender." I asked since we were in the changing room and I didn't see another costume.
“Nah, I'm just putting my bag here before prepping for guests. I hope you enjoy! You're sitting next to Kyoya, right?” Haruhi said, putting her bag down on a couch in the room.
“Yup! He's been a big help all day! He has a very business-oriented look to him, but he's been really sweet to me.” I smile.
“I'm glad he is taking care of you! I knew you were a bit anxious, it being your first day and all. It's a bit surprising, though. Kyoya mainly does things that eventually benefit him. But you are right, in the end, that's just his exterior. He truly is a nice guy. Anyway, I am assuming you met everyone else?” Haruhi said as we walked out of the changing room towards Kyoya.
“Yeah, I did! Everyone in the club seems pretty nice!” I said sitting down next to Kyoya as he tapped away on his computer. Both Kyoya and I bid farewell to Haruhi as she walked off and began preparing for her guests, just like everyone else.
Sooner or later, the room was packed with customers. Chatter could be heard all around the room. I was in the middle of telling Kyoya how exactly my family and I came to live in Japan when a girl came up to us.
“Hello, excuse us! But I was just wondering, Kyoya, why are you not hosting today?” She then turned to me.
“Oh? I heard we were getting a new student! Hello! You're the French girl, yes? I heard from Tamaki going around campus in a good mood, telling people he finally isn't the only halfer anymore. What are you doing at the host club?” She looked at me, a slight disgusted look on her face. I paid it no mind since she was a stranger and I could care less about what strangers think of me.
“Me and Haruhi are childhood friends. And I'm here because Tamaki offered. But I'm not a customer, I'm here to observe.” I gave her a polite smile, and in return, she flashed an even sour-er look. The girl then turned to Kyoya, blush appeared on her cheeks, and her smile was innocent and cutesy.
“So, Kyoya!! Are you hosting today?” she said, bubbly, getting a little too close for comfort to him. Kyoya didn't move away from her advance. He stood his ground and fixed his glasses.
“Miss Tachibana, how wonderful it is to see you at the club this fine evening. To answer your question, no, I am not hosting today due to other club duties. Why don't you request one of the others? I suggest Honey and Mori-senpai if you wish to be told Greek stories of the mythological heroes.” Kyoya gave her his signature smile and turned his attention back to his computer. She gave me another look before she left to look for Honey and Mori. I roll my eyes and sit back down next to Kyoya.
“Who's she?” I ask as I stare at him typing away at the computer.
“Tachibana Eiko, 2nd heir to a respectable electronics company. Her father has connections all around the world. Academically, she is mediocre at best, passing but not exactly excelling. It is rather clear that her father's company is going to be handed down to her elder sister.” Kyoya said, eyes still glued to his screen.
“Quite the analysis, huh? I'm guessing you do background checks on all the customers?” I say, smirking a little at his harsh run down on the girl.
“What an astute observation, Elyse. And yes, I do conduct background checks on all our guests. Even our homeroom classmates. It's important to know your peers. Speaking of important things, let's get started on homework. Working on it together will help you understand the material and get the work done quicker. There is a side room for resting that's far more quieter than here. Let's go, shall we?” He closed his computer and collected his bag, holding his hand out to me. I grab my belongings and take it standing up from my seat.
We entered the room. The first thing I noticed was the amazing acoustics, a smartboard, and the absence of stray belongings.
“Do you guys use this room often?” I asked as we sat on the couch in the center of the room.
“No, not exactly. But, it comes in handy when a member needs to do homework, study before they head home or during a free period. Why?” He answered as he brought out his homework sheet given by our homeroom teacher.
“No particular reason, I just take online classes from my old school in America. It may mean more classes for me, but it has its perks. This school may be better than my old one, but since Ouran Academy is for those with a pre-paved future, there aren't many electives for hobbies or regular special interests. So I take those electives virtually thanks to an agreement the board, my district, the Principal, and my parents had.” I said to him as I took out the same homework sheet.
“Ah. I see. Well, you may not be a member of the host club, but this room is completely free for you to use. Now let's get on with the homework, shall we?” He said, a slight nod as he spoke with his to-the-point demeanor.
We spent the rest of the club hours doing homework. By the time we finished the worksheet and extra study questions for me to grasp what exactly we were working on, I was spent.
Yawning, I stretch my arms up above my head.
“Kyoya, what time is it?” I said exhausted, ready to head home.
“Kyoya? I don't recall allowing you to refer to me by my first name.” Kyoya smirked.
I froze for a mere second, realizing my slip. Turning to him, I lowered my head so my forehead hit the couch cushion in preparation to apologize.
“Shoot! I'm so sorry, Ootori! I didn't mean to! It was a mistake, I slipped on my words..” I said worried I offended him in some way by acting so familiar with him. I closed my eyes, hoping he’d accept my apology. I didn't want to tarnish our growing friendship after all. I then heard a low chuckle. I shot my head up.
“Relax, Elyse, you didn't mean anything by it. It was a simple slip of the tongue. Nothing too extreme. And either way, I don't exactly mind it, I was just playing with you. Seeing as you're friends with Haruhi. And Tamaki would see it as an insult if you didn't refer to him by his first name, your place in our friend group is quite secure. There is no need to worry about what you call me. You are more than welcome to call me by my first name. I quite enjoyed that slip, though. Also, it's understandable because in America, you refer to people by their first names from the get-go.” Kyoya said, smiling.
“Wait, really? You don't mind?” I said, a little confused, I mean we did in fact meet earlier TODAY. Familiarity doesn't happen that quickly, does it?
“No, I don't, so please, call me Kyoya. By the way that bow you did was quite funny to me as well as completely unnecessary. But thank you for it. It gave me a good laugh.” He said, putting a hand on my head.
“Anyway, as for what time it is, it is currently 4:30 pm. It seems homework took longer than anticipated. The others most likely already left since the club closes at 4:15pm. It's best if we get going. My driver is already outside. What about you? Do you need a ride?” Kyoya said, collecting both our bags and leaving his hand out for me.
“I have a ride, but thank you. And I can hold my own bag.” I said as I got up off the couch and took his hand. Kyoya nodded and handed me my bag.
We were at the front of the school, both our rides were there waiting for us.
“See you tomorrow, Kyoya! And thank you for helping me again.” I said with a smile on my face
“It's my pleasure. See you tomorrow, Elyse.”
On the ride home, I was jamming with Mr. Dubois, this time listening to 80s J-pop. And as we neared my house, my excitement grew.
As soon as the car was parked, I thanked Mr. Dubois and bolted to the kitchen where my mom was studying for her Kōtō Shin Nintei exam. The Japanese equivalent of a G.E.D.
‘Mommy!!!” I hugged her from the side
“Do you have time? I wanna tell you about my day.” I said my body glued to hers in an embrace.
I told Mom about my day, and finally got to my room. Opening my door, I saw my friends sitting around on the bed like a council. Josie spoke.
“Soooo, how was it?” She said a bright smile with anticipation lay on her face.
“What is this, a council meeting?” I asked putting my school bag on the floor against my desk.
“Apparently. Josie wants all the ‘deets’ on your first day being surrounded by all those rich people. Cassius and I were dragged into this because she promised us a Super Smash bros ultimate rematch because of how you absolutely obliterated us last time. I blame it on who you main, Frickin Pyra/Mythra.” Michael yawned.
“Hey, it's not my fault! I just know how to play them.” I smiled teasingly
“Yeah, yeah, just spill so we can start playing. And don't you dare tarnish my boy Marths name.” He said, giving me a look of vengeance. I chuckle and sit down on my bed, joining the circle.
I tell them all about Haruhi, the host club, the Tachibana girl, and studying with Kyoya.
“Ooooo Kyoya! He sounds like a hottie! Speaking of, I need a man and I need one quick! The Ouran High boys aren't much to look at.” Josie sighed
“Hey, I go there too! I'm hot!” Cassius blurted out Josie just gave him a playful, disgusted look.
“Sure you are man. Keep telling yourself that. But Kyoya? He sounds like a dream! Hot, Stoic, business-oriented, smart, and rich!!! Elyse, you scored big time!” Josie's eyes beamed at me.
“Josie, slow down there. We just met and I made first-name basis quicker than expected, but we are just friends, plus he is a host, I’m sure the customers will be a tad bit irritated or bothered that their favorite host is in a relationship. Anyway, other than that, it was just a normal school day, and I'm pretty tired. So, who's ready for a game of Smash?” I asked, prepared to beat the 3 of them in Smash once again.
