Chapter Text
Obito met his first mate when he was three, Rin, they met on the playground- she came up to him and asked if he wanted to play hide and seek with her as no one else on the playground would. Obito despite his undeveloped scenting capabilities and lacklustre knowledge of mates knew the second he breathed in her scent that she was his person, so he of course played hide and seek with her until his granny came over saying it was time to go home but when she walked over to them, she froze. She was also able to scent that they were mates and asked Rin where her parents were, soon they were planning dinner parties and playdates talking about how rare it was to meet mates before presentation. Despite her being happy for him, that night his granny told him to be careful when it came to mates that they can be more harm than good but that they were years off facing those issues.
After that meeting Rin became a fixture in his life, he saw her every day and his family grew from just him and his granny to include Rin and her parents, although Obito knew he was an Uchiha he had never been accepted into the clan- he didn’t know much as too why but the other Uchiha had murmured the word ‘bastard’ and a word his grandmother washed his mouth out when he repeated what he heard back to her, it was a horrible insult toward his mother who was his grannies daughter. Obito learned quickly to not ask about his parents as it could make his granny either inconsolably sad or terrifyingly angry but with Rin now in his life, he finally got to see what it was like to have parents, it was nice. As they grew their scents slowly grew to start reflecting their future designation, he and Rin were both going to be alphas which shocked everyone but his granny explained that whilst rare it was more common amongst Uchiha to have more than one mate which can lead to two of the same designation to be mates but that always meant there was at least one more and since they were alphas they would be an omega. However, after that day his granny would look at him with sadness in her eyes more and more, muttering about curses and history repeating.
All of that was too complicated for Obito, he was 7 the only reason he really knew what mates were was because he already had one- apparently it would mean more when he was older and had presented but for now all he knew was that Rin was his, his friend, his family and his person; the one who accepted and understood him no matter what. So apparently because they were both alphas that meant they had another mate that just meant more family and another person who was his and who got him so Obito was excited and searched every scent looking for the one that could complete them. Rin however, she was scared at the prospect of another mate especially because it would be an omega- she had explained to him that omegas were prized possessions that are coveted and protected, they would be someone who they’d need to protect and provide for- also depending on their mates’ parents and pack fight for. Obito and Rin were turning 8 very soon and that meant soon they’d have the chance to go to the academy, something they both wanted and were training to do but Rin for a reason unknown to him felt inadequate, she felt she was too weak and now that they learned they would have an omega she felt unworthy and a failure already- she had said that she wouldn’t be able to protect their mate and that meant she’d be a bad alpha.
“Well, an alpha needs to protect and provide right, but since we’re both alpha’s we’d share that job so let’s make a deal I’ll protect us, and you provide for us. We’ll share the load, I’ll get strong enough to protect you, our family and our omega- I’ll be the strongest. Ahhh, I know Rin, I’ll become the Hokage- they’re the strongest in the village and protects everyone so if I become Hokage that’ll be perfect and then you can focus on providing for us, making sure were happy and healthy. How does that sound?” Obito stood triumphantly on top of the climbing frame as he looked down on Rin.
“That sounds perfect Obito, I’m so lucky to have a mate like you. So, I’ll work super hard at my job too, maybe I should become a medical ninja that way I can keep you and our omega healthy- then we’ll be an even stronger team every shinobi team needs a medic and that way I’m more likely to stay by your side.” Rin got an excited look in her eye and Obito knew she was going to go and study her hardest about how to become a medic; his Rin was so smart.
When he was on his way home to his granny that night, running through the Uchiha district until he reached the little house in a far off corner, he collided with a teenage girl and then with the hard pavement his hands scraped against it and his arm screamed out in pain so he yelped out as he started to tear up. He looked up to see a stunned teen girl, she had long silky black hair and soft features, but he was drawn to her wide onyx eyes that flashed red for a moment; she was an Uchiha which meant he was in trouble- he had to hold back a sob, but the tears got stronger. He sat up, ignoring the sting of his hand and bowed his head to the girl as he began to choke out teary apologies but instead of hitting him like expected she gently rested a hand on his shoulder startling him and when he looked up at her there was a kind expression on her face.
“Don’t apologise, I came round from that corner unexpectedly and you’re the one who got hurt. Are you alright?” She had a soft sweet voice and cupped his cheek as she wiped at his tears before moving down to his scrapped hands and elbow, a pale green glow emitted from her hands and Obito wasn’t in pain anymore.
“Wow, you’re amazing.” Obito spoke softly in awe making the girl blush.
“Let’s get you up off the ground. I’m Mikoto, what’s your name?” Mikoto helped him up off the ground and began dusting him off.
“Obito, oh and thank you very much Mikoto-san, you’re very nice.” When he said his name Mikoto paused and her breath hitched, she realised who she was dealing with Obito was going to get hit now but she didn’t she pulled him into a hug and a sweet scent set over him until a moment passed and she pushed them apart.
“Sorry Obito, I just have been wanting to meet you for a while. Ahh I’m so bad at this, let me walk you back to your grandmothers and maybe then I can explain better. Wait, sensei is it alright if I join training late, I’d really like to walk Obito back.” Mikoto looked back to two people stood behind her, another girl a similar age with bright red hair and blue eyes who looked very amused at what was going on and a tall older man with tired eyes and long tied back spikey silver hair.
“Ahh I’m alright with you taking all the time you need but I’m not the one you need to worry about, Kashi will be very upset- he was looking forward to today. Mah, I’m going to have a grumpy baby on my hands.” The older man spoke up and looked like he was about to cry as he mentioned the grumpy baby part.
“Sensei, Kashi is four- he’s very much not a baby.” The red-haired girl added which made the man squawk indignantly and glare lightly at her.
“He is still a baby, and he will always be my precious little baby even when he’s 50 with babies of his own.” This made the two girls laugh.
“Don’t worry sensei, tell Kashi I shall make it up to him tenfold.” Mikoto promised which was good enough for her sensei as he nodded and continued walking, when he passed Obito he caught a whiff of a scent that triggered something in his brain but before he could dwell on it or stop the man, he had already walked a great distance away the red-haired girl not too far behind.
“You really don’t have to walk me back, Mikoto-san especially if you’re going to miss training.”
“Nonsense, there will always be time to train later but helping you well I can only do that right now and well you’re important Obito so is it so bad that I want to walk you home.” Mikoto held her hand out for him to take and he did.
“Well, if you insist and I can’t really blame you, I’m going to be Hokage someday.” Obito grinned up at her.
“Oh wow, now that’s quite the goal. I look forward to seeing you accomplish it, plus it’d be nice to see an Uchiha Hokage.” Mikoto ruffled his hair.
As they walked he asked about her team, the red head was apparently Kushina Uzumaki and their sensei was Sakumo Hatake which was apparently a big deal as he was a super strong shinobi- the White Fang and another who they were going to pick up, Fugaku Uchiha the clan heads son and also Mikoto’s mate, this lead to Obito telling her about Rin an their mysterious third mate.
“Ahh you will have to be careful with that Obito-kun, you’re lucky you know now so young. My parents had a third mate but because they were an alpha and omega pair, they hadn’t ever suspected they had another mate out there so they were already bonded and had me when they met their third so despite the fact they were mates she was shamed and called a homewrecker for simply trying to be with her mates even if she could no longer bond with them. When you bond with someone in a cycle after that cycle you can’t bond with anyone ever again unless your bonded dies, so do not bond with Rin until you are able to bond with your omega as well.” Mikoto gave him a sad look and then got very quiet.
“Don’t worry Mikoto-san I will wait for our omega. I’m sorry to hear about your parents, that must’ve been hard for them.” Mikoto squeezed his hand and gave him a sad smile.
“It was, my father never recovered from the pain of everything and although she died on a mission, I sometimes think it was the pain and guilt she felt from everything that caused her death. Ahh, I think we’re here.” Mikoto had a distant look for a moment before she shook her head and smiled down at him.
“Oh yea, would you like to come in for some tea? Obaa-can always say that is the polite thing to do and she hates when I’m not polite.” Obito asked as he opened the door calling out to inside that he was home.
“How about we ask your granny first, but if she’s ok with it I’m happy to stay for some tea.” Mikoto said as she waited underneath the threshold.
“Ok, I’ll go get her. Obaa-chan I have a guest, and she really wants to see you.” Obito called out as he went looking for his granny.
“Oh, is there now. Well, I’m on my way, it’s so rare we have guests other than the Nohara’s.” His granny called back and soon she turned the corner to where he was.
“Yea, she’s really nice obaa-chan but she won’t come in until she gets your permission. Can she please stay, she’s so nice, she’s really cool and she’s the first person in the clan to be kind to me.” Obito started pulling his granny toward the door.
“That’s wonderful Obito, of course she can stay for a little while.” His granny said but then froze when they finally arrived at the door.
“Obaa-chan, this is Mikoto-san and Mikoto-san this is my obaa-chan.” Obito grabbed Mikoto’s hand trying to gently pull her into the house, but she was also frozen with an awkward smile on her face.
“No, you get out of my house and stay away from my grandson, he’s suffered enough because of your family. I have suffered enough, my daughter is dead and even after that her name has been raked through the mud and they stood by and did nothing. I told your parents to stay far away from us, and you should do the same.” His granny yelled, he had never seen her snap at someone like this before.
“Ahh, I’m sorry Obito, it was lovely meeting you, but I think it’s best if I say goodbye. Amane-san I am sorry for any distress I caused, I-I had just hoped that maybe we could get to have a relationship, but I understand it’s too painful.” Mikoto bowed and turned to leave but Obito grabbed her hand.
“Obaa-chan, you said she could stay. I don’t know what’s going on, but it sounds like you have a problem with her parents, and you’ve said hundreds of times that a child should never be judged because of their parents, so give her a chance. Otherwise, I-I’ll get mad and I’ll…” Obito couldn’t think of what to threaten his granny with but before he could she placed a hand on his shoulder and had a sad watery smile on her face.
“Ok, she can stay for some tea. There’s no need to work yourself up, you were right I shouldn’t judge her because of the issues I have with her parents.” His granny ran a hand through his hair and let Mikoto in.
“Now what tea would you like? We have almost every type.” His granny asked as she walked to the kitchen and Mikoto looked stunned but when he started following his granny still holding Mikoto’s hand she snapped out of it and began following.
“Just green tea is fine, thank you.” Mikoto said when the arrived in the kitchen.
“Of course, Obito dear why don’t you tell me how you two met whilst I get everything ready.” So Obito recounted everything that had happened on his way back from the playground with Rin including what Mikoto told him about her team.
“She also healed my scrapes so she must be a super amazing shinobi.” Mikoto blushed at his comment.
“Well, it’s no surprise with the legendary white fang as her teacher, I didn’t know he had a son though.” His granny said as she set down the tea and snacks.
“Yes, not many do know at the moment about Kakashi, sensei is very protective of him and is panicking over the fact he’s going to the academy with the next crop and so more people will know about him and well he also doesn’t think Kashi should be joining the academy yet.” Mikoto explained before taking a sip of the tea.
“Ahh, I understand that plight Obito will be joining the academy at the same time and as much as I believe in him, I’m not ready for him to be learning to become a shinobi. Maybe Obito and Kakashi could be friends, the only person his age he spends time with is Rin and as amazing as the girl is he needs more friends.” Mikoto winced in response and Obito baulked, he didn’t need more friends- unless it was his other mate then it would be ok.
“Well, Kakashi is actually 4, so not actually the same age and he isn’t the most social even though he would really benefit from a friend, but Kakashi is a genius which is why the Hokage has decided he should join the academy early, but it also means he struggles to connect with other kids his age or anyone in general.” Mikoto sighed.
“Well maybe Obito and Rin could befriend him, sounds like the boy may need it and that way they all have someone else they know at the academy.” His granny offered ignoring his earlier indignation.
“Oh, that would be great, I’ll ask sensei when I see him.” Mikoto grinned at her then drank the last of her tea.
“Speaking of, I’ll get out of your hair. Thank you Amane-san and it was lovely meeting you Obito-kun.” She set her cup down and stood up to bow and then moved to leave.
“No, Mikoto stay. Obito was right and you two deserve to have a relationship. Obito, my dear grandson- light of my life, I have been keeping somethings from you; I told myself you were too young, and I was protecting you, but I was being selfish, protecting myself and I stole the chance for you to have more in your life. Obito, Mikoto is your half-sister; your mother was like you, she had two mates- Mikoto’s parents who were already bonded but despite that they still wanted to be in a relationship with her and that lead to her eventually getting pregnant with you. This led to their relationship being discovered and therefor under scrutiny, but your mother endured most of the clan’s ire and even a year after everything had been revealed she still faced a lot of harassment, and it got so bad that there was an accident caused which took her life. I was so angry at the injustice of it all and how little Mikoto’s parents helped that I officially adopted you and stopped them from having any contact with you, I thought it would be best for you but clearly I stopped you from having a relationship with your sister who had no part in your mothers pain or death.” Obito was shocked, his granny had just dropped so much information on him and now his head hurt and stayed silent for a few minutes to process it making both women fidget nervously.
“So, I-I have a sister and she’s super cool!” He finally spoke up deciding to focus on the good rather than the bad.
“Yes, that’s why I hugged you earlier- I knew who you were and had always wanted to get to know my little brother so when I realised it was you who bumped into me, I took advantage of the opportunity to talk to you.” Mikoto was crying now and so Obito walked over to her and gave her the biggest hug he could which led to her sobbing into his hair.
Mikoto left half an hour later with the promise to visit tomorrow and take him out to her favourite café, granny also promised to try and come to an agreement with Mikoto’s mother to at least allow Mikoto good access to be in Obito’s life and possibly allow him to be a part of his life. After she left Obito went to his room and cried, his mother and grandmother suffered so much and partly because of him and because she had two mates and found them too late- he finally understood his granny’s hesitance when he met Rin and her mutterings of curses when they realised they had a third mate maybe she was right but he remembered earlier in the playground with Rin and hoped that he wouldn’t suffer a similar fate to his mother. His granny made him his favourite meal that night and read him his favourite book, as she tucked him in to bed and kissed his forehead, she whispered a prayer and told him she loved him and how strong she knew he was for handling such information.
The next day Mikoto was at their door bright and early with a big smile and presents in tow (making up for missed birthdays she said), there were some clothes, treats, books and a small teddy she had apparently made when she first found out she was having a younger sibling but never was able to give it to him and kept it in the hopes she one day could.
“Onee-chan, this is amazing thank you. I have the best sister ever.” Mikoto scooped him up into a big hug and Obito was enveloped in a happy sweet scent- an omega’s scent he was finally able to realise, he had never interacted with one before, so it took him a while to realise Rin’s parents and his granny were all betas, so he didn’t have much experience with alpha’s either.
Mikoto hesitantly put him down and took his hand as they walked through the Uchiha district chattering about little things until they arrived at the café she was telling him about where they took an outside table, Mikoto ordered tea and dango for them both but offered to get him anything else he wanted but he was more than happy with what she ordered. Obito then told his sister as many Rin stories as he could, and she sprinkled some in about her team- the one about their first mission outside the village was his favourite hearing about how Fugaku blundered about getting food for them all trying to impress Mikoto was very funny.
“Oh, there’s also the first time we met Kakashi, he was a tiny little thing not even a year old yet and sensei invited us over for a post mission dinner. His mate had cooked up a massive feast for us and was finally ok with us meeting Kakashi- we were still new to being sensei’s students when he was first born so they didn’t trust us with such a delicate secret yet. So, we had only just taken our shoes off when suddenly a silver blur dropped from the ceiling and onto sensei’s head giving us all a massive fright, Kushina and Fugaku got so surprised that they fell over. Then sensei’s mate, Shiori, ran in looking alarmed and freaked out when she saw Kakashi on sensei’s head and him looking stunned- apparently Kashi had figured out how to chakra walk or crawl in his case up the walls and onto the ceiling dropping onto his father when he saw him. Sensei and Shiori-san were so shocked and taken aback that they forgot that we were there.” Mikoto took a sip of tea and was about to continue when her name was called out by a teen boy.
“Mikoto, what are you doing here? You said you were too busy to go out with me today.” The boy walked over with an annoyed expression and the red-haired girl from yesterday, Kushina, was with him munching on a snack not really caring about her friend’s outburst.
“I am busy, I’m spending the day with Obito. He’s- well it’s a long story that I’ll explain to you later but he’s my little brother.” Mikoto explained waving at the boy as she tried to calm him down.
“Oh, damn really? That’s so cool Mi-chan.” Kushina cut in, mouth still full then swallowed and gave Mikoto a quick side hug.
“I didn’t know you had a brother; wait Obito I recognise that name he’s the” Mikoto cut the boy off before he could continue.
“Well, I do, and I just told you it’s a long story. I just want to have a nice day with my little brother without any issues so I’ll talk to you about it tomorrow Fugaku so can you please let us get back to our day?” Mikoto insisted and her mate seemed to get the message even if he looked like a kicked puppy, nodding as he stepped back.
“Ok, have a good day then.” Fugaku pecked her on the cheek and smiled awkwardly at Obito before walking away.
“Yea, have a great day Mi-chan. I’ll see you this weekend for training now Imma meet my boy and take him out for ramen as a nice homecoming.” Kushina said before rushing off excitedly nearly knocking over Fugaku making him yell at her and chase after her when she ignored him.
“Sorry about that Obito, oh is there anywhere you want to go?” Mikoto asked as she called over a server and paid the bill.
Obito didn’t have many places in mind but when he asked if he could introduce her to Rin and her parents, she just told him to lead the way, so he did, Rin was the one who answered the door and was very surprised to see him with an unfamiliar person. He told her about everything he had learned yesterday and Rin was shocked to discover Obito had a sister and his mother had 2 mates like them but soon was asking Mikoto lots of questions about her life, parents and what it was like being an omega- she explained to him that such things were important for them to know about them since they would have an omega mate. After Rin explained why to Mikoto happily educated them on omegas and alpha’s as much as she could before Rin’s parents called them for lunch and after that they walked back to the Uchiha district, doing some shopping on their way (Mikoto had bought him some really cool goggles that he had been eyeing, they were perfect for protecting his eyes, his future sharingan) and when they arrived home his granny and a man were waiting for them.
“Okaa-san, does this mean you have come to an arrangement?” Mikoto asked walking over to the man.
“Yes, Obito-kun will be free to visit you as he pleases and even stay over sometimes if you both wish, of course the reverse is true you can visit and stay at Amane-san’s home whenever you want to see Obito-kun and at least once a month we shall have a family dinner so to speak of course so long as our schedules permit it.” The man explained and then crouched down to his level.
“Obito-kun, it’s wonderful to see you again as you probably already know I am Mikoto’s mother and was one of your mothers’ mates- my name is Ryosuke Uchiha, but you can call me Ryo and if you ever need anything don’t be afraid to come to me for help.” Ryosuke kept his distance, but he looked as if he was itching to scoop him up like Mikoto had done this morning, he smelled bittersweet but when Obito moved to reach out his granny took his hand and bid them a good day before walking off.
After that day Mikoto made sure to visit him at least every other day when she was in the village, unfortunately she had to leave the village frequently for missions but one day she offered for him and Rin to come watch them train- Rin had gotten very close to Mikoto as well and she looked up to her as if she had hung the stars and moon, even asking Mikoto to teach her medical ninjutsu. Rin so far only knew basic first aid, but it was hard to fit in lessons with Mikoto so busy.
“Wait will that Kakashi kid be there too?” Obito asked remembering her mentioning he often sat in on their training.
“No Kakashi has his academy entrance exam that day, he’s getting it earlier due to some special circumstances.” Mikoto explained before biting into some dango she brought them.
“Who’s Kakashi?” Rin asked cocking her head to the side.
“He’s my sensei’s son. He’s a good kid when you get to know him but trying to get to know him is difficult- he’s a bit standoffish and prickly. Although I do think you two would be good friends with him but Obito has never been interested whenever I brought it up so I picked a day I knew he wouldn’t be there.” Mikoto explained as she ruffled his hair.
“The brat’s four we wouldn’t be friends we would be babysitting.” Obito huffed and turned to Rin.
“Woah he’s four and he’s joining the academy so soon, that’s so amazing.” Rin seemed to have sparkles in her eye as she praised a kid she didn’t even know.
“He is, a true genius and he’ll likely be your classmate so if you’d be so kind would you keep an eye on him and hopefully you could become his friend, he may be talented but he’s still just a little kid.” Mikoto chuckled to herself as if remembering something funny.
“Of course we can Mikoto-san.” Rin said covering his mouth before he could refuse.
“Thank you, Rin, if you’d like I’m babysitting Kakashi for the weekend whilst sensei is away for a mission maybe you could come over to play- or train, I’ve never actually seen Kakashi play. I could even take the time to teach you more medical ninjutsu.” Mikoto had grabbed Rin’s hands and was excitedly swinging them.
“That sounds great, I’ll look forward to it.” Rin excitedly hugged Mikoto and Obito huffed.
“If Rin is going, I’m coming too.” Obito’s proclamation made both girls look at each other and laughed.
Mikoto and Rin stayed over that night so the next morning it would be easier for her to take them with her to her training, they had just finished breakfast when there was a knock at the door, Obito ran to answer and when he did he was disappointed to see Fugaku- the older alpha struggled to hide his dislike for taking up so much of Mikoto’s time, he was smiling awkwardly down at him.
“Nee-chan your boyfriend is here!” He called out loudly behind him.
“Oh, Fugaku, I’ll be there in a moment!” He heard his sister call back and came up behind him a few seconds later.
“I went to your house to see if you’d want to walk to training together but you weren’t there, your mother said you were here, so I came over.” Fugaku explained.
“Oh, yes since Obito and Rin are joining us today I stayed over so I wouldn’t have to make the extra trips back and forth, now we can all go walk over together- are you both ready to go?” Mikoto turned back to him and Rin who was now at his side, bag in hand so they nodded.
As they walked Fugaku talked about his most recent mission then asked Mikoto about her week, Obito kept making funny faces behind Fugaku making Rin and his sister have to stifle laughter. Soon they arrived at the training ground where Kushina was sat with her sensei painting something as she chatted with the man.
“We’re here sensei. I’d like you to meet my little brother Obito Uchiha and this is his best friend and mate Rin Nohara, I’ve also started teaching her some medical ninjutsu.” Mikoto introduced as she walked over with them.
“Mi-chan guess what, Minato passed the jonin exam- he’s now the youngest jonin ever. Ahh sorry for interrupting the little meet and greet I just got so excited dattebane.” Kushina excitedly exclaimed when she saw Mikoto as she latched onto her.
“Wow, we’ll have to go out and celebrate his success soon then.” Mikoto laughed as she separated from her teammate.
“It’s a pleasure to officially meet you both, Mikoto has spoken highly of you and it’s an honour to have you want to watch our training. If you have any questions, feel free to ask me, I am here to teach and I promise I don’t bite. Oh, and just call me Sakumo.” Sakumo greeted with a warm smile.
“Thank you very much for having us Sakumo-san and the honours is ours.” Rin said as she bowed, bumping him with her elbow shooting him a look telling him to do the same.
“Oh, and sensei, they’ve agreed to come and play with Kakashi whilst I’m babysitting- oh they’ll become such great friends, maybe they’ll even become teammates since they’ll be in the same class.” Mikoto was smiling widely and Sakumo smiled back as he ruffled her hair.
“That would be nice, hopefully Kashi stays in their class as well.” Sakumo muttered the last part to himself.
“Any way let’s get to training, Obito, Rin you can sit over on the bench as they do 10 laps of the grounds. After warming up Kushina and Fugaku you both will spar with each other whilst Mikoto you’re with me for some kenjutsu then you’ll switch with Fugaku.” Sakumo instructed with a firm voice, everyone nodded and began running.
“Obito, Rin I brought some drinks and snacks. I’m sorry if it’s not the best selection, Kakashi isn’t the best source of what kids like.” Sakumo said as he walked over towards them.
“Thank you, Sakumo-san, I’m sure whatever you brought is more than enough.” Rin smiled as he pulled out the aforementioned snacks.
“Sakumo-san what’s kenjutsu? I’ve never heard of it.” Obito asked as he grabbed on of the juice boxes.
“Fighting with swords, it’s one of my specialties and so Mikoto asked me to train her in it shortly after becoming my student- she’s very skilled and don’t tell her this but I’ve had a sword made for her birthday.” Sakumo spoke the last part softly and gave them a quick wink.
“What rank are they? Kushina-san mentioned someone becoming a jonin does that mean they’re chunin, or are they genin?” Rin asked her eyes not taking her eyes off Kushina who was racing Fugaku and taunting him.
“They are chunin yes, Kushina was talking about her mate Minato- he’s just broken the record of youngest ever to achieve the rank of jonin. Which isn’t surprising, the kid’s a genius and he’s good especially to Kushina, any way my students aren’t too far off from becoming jonin themselves. I was going to suggest that they at least try the exam next year.” Sakumo answered before letting out a big belly laugh as Kushina tripped Fugaku when he overtook her.
“Fugaku, remember you need to be aware of your surroundings and Kushina remember you are teammates so play nice.” Sakumo called out to his students making Mikoto laugh but Kushina waved him off as she sprinted to finish off her last lap jumping up in victory.
Soon Fugaku and Mikoto finished, they all stretched as Sakumo opened a scroll and two swords appeared. He handed one to Mikoto and instructed Fugaku and Kushina to move to the side and to get ready to spar as Mikoto moved to the other side of the grounds unsheathing her sword and settled into a battle-ready stance waiting for her sensei to stand opposite her with his own blade drawn.
“Begin!” Sakumo shouted initiating both battles, Obito saw both Uchiha’s eyes turn red before they charged at their opponents.
Obito didn’t know who to watch, the flashing of elements was tempting to watch but he wanted to see his sister fight. He turned to Rin and saw her eyes stuck on Kushina’s and Fugaku’s spar so he watched Mikoto and her sensei clash blades, they were so fast he could barely watch them move around the training grounds he was only able to catch what they were doing when they clashed or jumped away from each other, but their eyes never strayed from the other. His sister was getting more out of breath and when she jumped away for a moment Sakumo had somehow stolen her sword and had his blade at her throat.
“You did well Mikoto, you lasted far longer this time, and you managed to cut my sleeve.” Sakumo smiled down at Mikoto and pat her shoulder.
“Thank you, sensei.” Mikoto bowed before sitting next to them, taking some water as she watched her teammates battle.
Fugaku was throwing multiple fire jutsu at the red head but it was blocked by a giant stream off water, Kushina used this opportunity to rush by and get in close engaging in taijutsu for a few minutes and just as Fugaku who had managed to counter and match every blow tried to create some space between them so he could cast a jutsu Kushina managed to grab onto his arm for a few seconds before ink travelled up his body and he collapsed. Kushina dusted herself off grinned at them throwing up a peace sign and walked over to her felled opponent and did some hand signs quickly before touching him and Fugaku was cleared of the ink.
“You both fought well, and Kushina I hope you didn’t try out a new seal on your teammate- you remember the last time you did that.” Sakumo raised an eyebrow and Kushina shivered.
“Don’t worry, this was well tested there was no chance of a repeat of that incident.” Kushina rubbed the back of her head bashfully.
“Rest for five then Fugaku you’re with me, we’re going to work on your sharingan.” Sakumo said as he tossed them each a bottle of water then sat down next to Rin.
“I hope we aren’t boring you kids.” Kushina said brightly as she bounded over sitting next to Mikoto.
“No not at all Kushina-san, watching you fight was amazing- it was awe inspiring. You’re all so amazing, hopefully when I become a shinobi I’ll grow up to be as strong as you all.” Rin praised and Kushina blushed.
“Aww Rin-chan, you’re so cute- I bet you’ll become a great and powerful shinobi one day and with Mi-chan training you- you’ll surely be an amazing medic too; she’s one of the best.” Kushina squished Rin’s cheeks making the girl giggle and Mikoto blushed.
“Yea nee-chan’s amazing and her fight was so cool even if I could barely see what was going on- I have the coolest sister.” Obito threw himself into his sister’s side hugging her and she smiled down at him hugging her back.
“Wow Fugaku, you’re really falling behind- even these kids can see it. So much for the future of the Uchiha, maybe that’s why Mikoto’s mates with a useless twerp like you so the Uchiha can actually have someone competent in charge.” Kushina mocked making Fugaku growl at her.
“Oh can it Uzumaki at least I’m not some annoying foreigner who lucked their way into the village- the only reason you’re even here is because of that damned-” Fugaku couldn’t finish his tirade as Kushina punched him and tackled him to the ground to begin punching him some more as her red hair raised splitting into 9 sections, quickly Sakumo picked Kushina up off of the Uchiha and Mikoto stopped Fugaku from getting up to make a move.
“You two enough! This behaviour is unacceptable, you two are teammates. A little friendly rivalry can be good, but Fugaku that was cruel and Kushina that teasing was excessive. Now both of you take a walk and cool off, if you don’t make up soon, I’m barring you both from duty for the next month.” Sakumo growled out, his expression angry, Fugaku shrugged Mikoto off and stormed away but Sakumo didn’t drop Kushina until her hair settled and she stopped snarling, then she quickly took off in the opposite direction.
“I’m sorry kids, I had believed they had gotten better. You shouldn’t have to see such a disappointing display of comradery, I might have to end training early but to apologise is there anything you want to know, or see? I can try make it happen so long as it’s within my means.” Sakumo shook his head in shame.
“I’m sorry Obito, Rin. Kushina and Fugaku have always had a tense relationship, but I didn’t think they’d get so bad in front of guests especially since something like that hasn’t happened since we were young genin.” Mikoto looked down at her feet, Fugaku was her mate, and she had told him that Kushina was her best friend, so it must’ve been tough to have two people she was close to fight like that.
“It’s ok nee-chan, it’s not your fault. Sakumo-san do you think you can show me some super cool jutsu?” Obito asked as he excitedly punching the air.
“Sure, kids I can show you a few. Now let’s think, ahh I’ll do Kakashi’s favourite one first.” Sakumo ruffled their hair before stepping back and biting into his thumb drawing blood then stamping it on a scroll he had pulled out.
Soon a collection of dogs all different breeds and sizes appeared all with headbands on, the smallest one was sat on the head on the biggest dog but jumped down and started sniffing at them, it jumped up onto the table and held it’s paw out.
“Do you want to touch my paw? They’re really soft.” A deep voice asked and Obito had to double take to realise that the dog was the one who spoke.
“A talking dog!?” He cried out as he stumbled backwards.
“Ahh of course I’ll touch paw, you’re so cute.” Rin grinned as she took the paw.
“I like this one boss.” The dog said as he shook Rin’s hand.
“Wow they are really soft, Obito you should touch them.” Rin shot him a happy smile as she pressed at the dog’s paw pads.
“No why would I want to do that? A talking dog is creepy, anyway I’m more of a cat person.” Obito huffed and turned away where he was then faced with the other dogs who now seemed to be glaring at him.
“Oh no Pakkun, please don’t attack my brother- he doesn’t know what he’s talking about. He was just surprised is all.” Mikoto said stepping in front of him shielding him from the tiny dog’s gaze.
“Oh well there goes my hope you for the possibility Kakashi might actually get a friend- well Rin might have some hope.” Sakumo said looking dejectedly up.
“Speaking of where is the mini boss?” The small dog asked jumping down away from Rin making her frown.
“Kakashi has his entrance exam today remember.” Sakumo answered stepping forward and crouching down for the dog to jump up onto his shoulder.
“Ahh, are you worried boss? Or is it just empty nest syndrome?” The dog asked with a laugh.
“Pakkun Kakashi if 4 we’re years from an empty nest and Kakashi will be fine with the exam.” Sakumo glared lightly at the dog- who he now realised was called Pakkun.
“Of course, Kakashi will be fine, you on the other hand…” Pakkun trailed off after Sakumo picked him up by the scruff of his neck.
“Anyway, let’s do some other jutsu. Let’s try a lightning jutsu.” Sakumo pondered dropping Pakkun back on the big dog’s head before jumping back and doing some hand signs.
Soon a giant lightning beast appeared and darted around the area before returning to Sakumo’s side before dissipating. Sakumo then quickly went through some more hand signs and two more of him popped into existence either side of him and they both started going through hand signs and they were hit with a strong breeze and shortly after it settled the other Sakumo pressed his hands to the floor, and it turned to mud as a dragon head shot out past them.
“So, what did you kids think?” Sakumo asked and Obito was convinced this was the coolest man he had ever met.
“That was AMAZING!” Obito shrieked and ran up to the man.
“That was the coolest thing ever, you must be one of the strongest shinobi ever!” Obito was struggling to hold in his excited energy and was vibrating as he waved his arms around.
“Yea, that was awesome.” Rin exclaimed as she ran over, Sakumo bashfully rubbed his head.
“He is. Sensei is stronger than even the legendary Sanin.” Mikoto boasted making the man blush.
“Now don’t say that otherwise Tsunade might just test that and I don’t want to be on her bad side. Anyway, Mikoto since they’re not back yet I’ll say you’re dismissed. I’ll see you in a few days and thanks again for agreeing to watch Kashi. Now I’m going to go find where those two miscreants ran off to, Obito and Rin it was lovely meeting you and who knows maybe I’ll see you soon hopefully as Kakashi’s friends.” Sakumo waved at them before jumping into the trees and disappearing, his dogs following closely behind.
Mikoto then took them out for lunch before taking them home, she didn’t stay with them though telling them she’ll come by early on Sunday with Kakashi before disappearing to try find Fugaku. For the next two days he and Rin couldn’t stop talking about how awesome Sakumo and Mikoto were to his granny and Rin’s parents and was telling them about how Mikoto was going to help them train for the academy and their entrance exam, which was a week away, alongside Sakumo’s son. His granny had teased him about how his initial refusal to meet the boy and his newfound excitement about ‘babysitting’ and when Sunday came Rin’s parents and his granny made sure they had a big breakfast and were dressed nicely whilst also appropriate for training.
Soon there was a knock on the door and his granny went to answer it, he and Rin followed behind and waited in the next room as she got the door and greeted their guest.
“Morning Amane-san, I’d like you to meet Kakashi Hatake. Kakashi this is Amane Uchiha, the one I told you about.” Obito heard Mikoto introduce.
“Pleasure to meet you Uchiha-san, Mikoto-san has spoken highly of you and thank you for having me over.” A quite high-pitched voice added.
“Oh, my what a polite boy, the pleasure is all mine. Please come in, Obito and Rin are in the next room.” His granny replied and soon was opening the door to the room he and Rin were in where they had rushed to sit down to avoid looking like they were eavesdropping.
His granny and sister walked into the room revealing a small silver haired boy wearing a mask over the bottom half of his face stood in the doorway, his hair was exactly like his father’s just shorter, but his eyes looked tired as they seemed to droop slightly. As the boy walked further into the room and came closer Obito was able to catch his scent and soon was washed over with a feeling he had only ever experienced with Rin- his brain screamed that this was his mate and turning to Rin he could tell she had realised the same. They had found their other mate, their omega- Kakashi Hatake.
“Hello, my name is Kakashi Hatake. It’s a pleasure to meet you.” The small boy bowed and when he stood Obito saw his nose twitch and his eyes close for a moment before he sat down opposite them next to Mikoto.
Obito was too tongue tied to speak, he was in shock. In front of them sat their omega and he didn’t seem to acknowledge the fact that they were mates, if Obito had been able to scent such a thing surely so could the boy- he and Rin had been younger than he was when they met and they knew. Obito couldn’t force any words out and could only gape as he shot his granny a wide-eyed look and soon, she had a similar one as she realised what had happened.
“Mikoto dear can you please help me with the snacks, let’s allow the kids to have the chance to introduce themselves and have some small talk.” His granny shot him a look and shook her head turning her gaze to Kakashi as she walked out the room with Mikoto- he wasn’t allowed to mention it.
“It’s nice to meet you Kakashi-kun, I am Rin Nohara and this is Obito Uchiha. I hope we can be friends.” Rin replied with a crooked smile; she must’ve gotten his granny’s message too.
“Yea, nice to meet you.” Obito managed to squeak out.
“So Kakashi-kun do you have any hobbies or things you like to do?” Rin asked, she subtly grabbed his hand which helped ground him.
“I like training, and I like reading.” Kakashi replied as he stared at them like he was trying to figure something out.
“Oh, I like reading too, what kind of books do you like to read?” Rin was getting more relaxed and confident.
“Stuff about jutsu’s, training techniques, shinobi rules and dog’s.” Kakashi said looking around the room momentarily.
“Wow, you must really like training and dogs.” Obito joked but Kakashi just nodded.
“What do you guy’s like to do?” Kakashi asked after a moment.
“Well, I like playing with Rin, going to the playground, hanging out with nee-chan and training too.” Obito answered, he wasn’t being the most honest- he didn’t like training all that much, but he was trying to bond with his new mate so he’s sure he can be forgiven.
“I also like those things as well as reading of course, I also like learning new medical stuff from Mikoto-chan and baking with my parents.” Rin added.
“Are you wanting to be a medic?” Kakashi asked more excitedly, which wasn’t a lot but compared to his more deadpan demeanour from before it was definitely an increase in energy.
“Yes, at first it was just an idea so I can help my future team but after researching it more and learning from Mikoto-san it’s really interesting and now I really want to become an iryo-nin more than anything.” Rin was grinning ear to ear as she talked about her new passion.
“That’s really good Rin, medical ninjutsu requires a lot of control and it’s vital for a shinobi squad to have at least one medic. I’ve read a few medical and biology textbooks myself.” Kakashi praised making Rin blush.
Shortly after this exchange the door opened and Mikoto walked through with a tray with tea and snacks on them, his granny was close behind alongside Rin’s parents. Mikoto set down the tray and sat next to Kakashi with a hesitant and nervous look.
“Kakashi, we need to talk, I promise you’re not in trouble, but have you noticed anything about Rin and Obito’s scent?” Mikoto asked finally broaching the subject.
“Yes, but I didn’t say anything because tou-san said it was rude to comment on people’s scent, so I didn’t. Why was I supposed to?” Kakashi cocked his head to the side as his eyebrows knit together.
“Ahh yes, I had forgotten about your heightened sense of smell. Normally it is impolite to comment on others scent, so it’s understandable why you didn’t mention any differences- well Kashi what did you notice and did you experience anything. Please be truthful, I promise you won’t get in trouble.” Mikoto hesitantly rested a hand atop his head.
“Well, Obito smells lightly of ash, bergamot and cinnamon whilst Rin smells of rain, cedar and lemongrass, naturally I was able to identify them young unpresented alpha’s but there’s something else that my brain is trying to convey but I’m not sure what it is and so it’s giving me a headache. It’s likely my instincts trying to tell me something, but I can’t seem to understand it but I’m guessing you know what it is otherwise you wouldn’t bring it up.” Kakashi explained with a questioning look.
“Yes, it seems as if Obito and Rin are your mates.” Mikoto responded and was looking more nervous by the second.
“Mate?” Kakashi then turned his inquisitive gaze to them.
“Yes, like Fugaku and I, Kushina and Minato. Like your father and your mother.” Mikoto looked as if she was about to say more but after mentioning Kakashi’s parents he hopped off the sofa and stood up.
“Oh, then no thank you.” Kakashi said to Mikoto before bowing to them and turned to try and leave but Mikoto stopped him by grabbing his arm.
“Kakashi, I’m sorry I wasn’t thinking- I shouldn’t have mentioned it, but please don’t close yourself off to Obito and Rin because you’re afraid of something that could happen- if you do that Kakashi you could close yourself off to something good and trust me you will regret it.” Mikoto looked panicked.
“Please Kakashi give it a chance, your father wants you to try and make friends with them and I’m sure when he finds out that they’re your mates he would ant you to get to know them. The last thing he wants is for you to close off your heart and he’d be sad to hear you rejected your mates because of him.” Mikoto spoke softly as she pulled the boy in for a hug which he tried to squirm out of it.
“Fine, but only because I don’t want tou-san to be sad.” Kakashi huffed and despite the mask covering his face Obito swears he was pouting but Mikoto just let out a sigh of relief.
“Obito, why don’t you and Rin show Kakashi around the house. Remember to make him feel welcome.” His granny suggested looking very tense.
“Sure, Kakashi would you like to follow me?” Obito and Rin stood up walking toward the small boy who just nodded in response.
Obito and Rin took him around the house showing him each room but when they reached his room, he suggested they stay here for a minute.
“Kakashi-kun can I ask why you reacted that way?” Rin hesitantly asked after a minute of awkward silence.
“Oh, that’s because my mother was killed a few years ago and my father was never the same after her loss- loosing a mate can destroy a person and that weakness can be a liability so it’s something I wished to avoid. It wasn’t meant as a slight against you both.” Kakashi explained emotionlessly as if he wasn’t talking about his mother’s death.
“Actually, her death anniversary is next week on the day of the entrance exam, which is why my father petitioned for me to take it earlier.” He elaborated expression unchanged.
“Oh, I’m sorry for your loss Kakashi even if it was years ago it must be difficult to lose a parent.” Rin gave him a sympathetic look, but Kakashi just gave a sluggish shrug.
“It doesn’t matter, anyway we should probably get back to the adults.” Kakashi said opening the door and walking out.
They made their way back to the sitting room where he heard Mikoto explaining about Kakashi’s mother and how it greatly impacted both father and son, fortunately Kakashi was behind Rin so likely couldn’t hear it, so Obito opened the door interrupting the conversation. Mikoto quickly suggested they start their training which made Kakashi perk up, they all made their way outside to Obito’s back yard and Mikoto instructed them to line up side by side. She took them through some basic warmups before suggesting they try working on some shuriken jutsu, an Uchiha specialty so Obito had a chance to show off to both his mates- the fact he had them both now was something he’d have to get used to, but it was exciting.
Well up until the four-year-old completely showed him up, Obito and Rin were lucky to even hit the target let alone the bullseye like Kakashi managed to hit the middle nearly every time, Rin was watching with starry eyes and Obito felt something bubble up within him as he watched Kakashi even manage some trick shots with the shuriken. Then when they went over some taijutsu which Kakashi was great at again, they weren’t sparring just going through some forms Mikoto showed them and the smaller boy was able to execute them perfectly even doing some other ones that Obito didn’t know. Mikoto then let them do what they pleased for a bit as she taught Rin some medical stuff, Kakashi pulled out a book and a notebook that he began writing in.
“How did you get so good at those?” Obito built up the courage to ask the younger boy.
“Training, I just kept practicing and trying new things I read or had seen until I got so good at it, I didn’t have to think about it.” Kakashi shrugged as he continued reading and making notes on something.
“So, what ya writing?” He asked whilst trying to sneak a peek.
“Possible training regimens, jutsu’s to try out and I’m hoping to try and develop my own jutsu like the 2nd Hokage did so some ideas for them.” Kakashi explained and Obito realised why Kakashi was so much better despite nearly being half his age- he simply worked so much harder than Obito, he was constantly training. Obito didn’t have even a tenth of his drive, he had heard people call Kakashi was a genius, and he was but it wasn’t just talent, it was skill and ability honed through hard work.
“Wow you’re pretty impressive Kakashi.” Obito admitted and remembered his proclamation from months ago- he was going to be Hokage so he could be a good alpha to protect his mates but how he was now compared to Kakashi he was useless, so he must get stronger.
“Thanks, you’re better than I thought you were going to be. You’ll likely pass the entrance exam so hopefully with some guidance you’ll improve.” Kakashi stated bluntly and Obito tried not to get offended as he thinks Kakashi was trying to be nice to him.
“Yea hopefully we’ll be in the same class- ahh we could all walk to the academy together and sit together it’ll be great.” Obito rambled on excitedly.
“Sure, so long as tou-san gets his way, that’d be nice.” The boy had a distant look.
“Huh what do you mean?”
“After my exam I heard tou-san and Hokage-sama arguing about whether or not I should even go to the academy, Hokage-sama wanted me to go straight to being a genin, but tou-san didn’t like that- he wants me to spend the full time in the academy.” Kakashi explained glaring at his notebook.
“I don’t understand why my father wants to hold me back- if I’m ready why wait but if tou-san thinks it’s best I won’t complain.” Kakashi sighed before sitting up.
Obito didn’t know what to say so he stayed silent and went back to working on his shuriken jutsu, they trained a little longer until Rin’s parents called them in for lunch which afterward Kakashi and Mikoto had to leave as she was dropping him off with Kushina. So he had now met both of his mates and his journey was on its way as they soon entered the academy.
